The paradoxes, ironies, and juxtapositions of Black Lives Matter (BLM) have not been lost on those in, around, and outside of the movement: Using a philosophical and historical lens of black political thought informing the movement, Christopher J. Lebron gives voice to the tensions that arise because of the hypocrisy of devaluing black lives in a civil society that holds the equality of diverse people central to its foundation. The culmination of Lebron’s effort provides an opportunity to enhance current thinking on our contemporary social movements since he does a responsible job of handling the chorus of exigent voices that have contributed to a black radical tradition from which the Movement for Black Lives, the policy component of BLM, is branded. Lebron’s approach, however, would have benefitted from a more careful consideration of critical intersectionality, structuralist theories, and biological racism.  相似文献

This paper focuses on the social media presence of Black Lives Matter (BLM). Specifically, we examine how social media users interact with BLM by using hashtags and thus modify the framing of the movement. We call this decentralized interaction with the movement “distributed framing”. Empirically, we illustrate this idea with an analysis of 66,159 tweets that mention #BlackLivesMatter in 2014, when #BlackLivesMatter becomes prominent on social media. We also tally the other hashtags that appear with #BlackLivesMatter in order to measure how online communities influence the framing of the movement. We find that #BlackLivesMatter is associated with five types of hashtags. These hashtags mention solidarity or approval of the movement, refer to police violence, mention movement tactics, mention Ferguson, or express counter-movement sentiments. The paper concludes with hypotheses about the development of movement framings that can be addressed in future research.  相似文献

This ethnographic study examines how Black Catholics identify with and respond to the Black Lives Matter movement. The study follows several national Black Catholic gatherings since the death of Mike Brown. Using an adaptation of Scott Hunt, Robert D. Benford, and David Snow's social movement frame analysis, I explore how Black Catholics define and construct the ongoing political issues within the Black Lives Matter movement. I discuss the conditions which contribute to Black Catholic’s participation, or lack thereof, in this social movement through the processes of diagnostic framing, prognostic framing, and motivational framing. I position the larger Black Catholic belief system within frame analysis, examine the relevance of the frames with the Black Catholic community, and analyse the frames’ timing with the Black Lives Matter cycle of protest. This research has implications for intragroup meaning making as Black Catholics start the process towards identifying with the Black Lives Matter social movement.  相似文献

The Black Supplementary School Movement has a fifty-year tradition of resisting racism in Britain. Central to the movement is a construction of African Diasporic Blackness that is marginalized in British scholarship. ‘Political blackness’, based on the unity ethnic minority groups, is an important frame of reference in Britain. This article will examine the limitations of ‘political blackness’ in relation to research carried out in the Black Supplementary School Movement that involved interviews with key activists and an archival analysis of documents at the George Padmore Institute. Political blackness is based on an inaccurate understanding of the relationship between multiculturalism and anti-racism; a misreading of the complex and global nature of racism and a non-strategic essentialism. The concept also creates a form non-whiteism, which disempowers ethnic minority communities and works to delegitimize African Diasporic Blackness, which has a tradition of resisting racist oppression.  相似文献

Social media provides scholars with important portals into the lives of marginalized communities and the movements organized to combat issues of race and racism in society. However, how to incorporate the seemingly unwieldy amount of social media data for research in our fields can pose challenges to further clarify how people navigate our social world and the issues with in it, but also how they organize to push for social change and equality. In what follows, the authors discuss how social media data can be used to enhance our studies of black lives in reflection of the burgeoning Black Lives Matter movement on issues such as gun violence, public health, and higher education.  相似文献

The Lebanon Lizard (Phoenicolacerta laevis) occurs on the Levantine coast and scattered populations are found in isolated coastal habitats along the southern and south-western coast of Turkey. We found an isolated but dense population of this species at and around the castle of Anaklia on Georgia’s Black Sea Coast, near the mouth of the river Enguri. The analysis of mitochondrial cytochrome b sequence suggests closeness of this population to the populations in the provinces of Kahramanmara?, Adana and Içel in southern Turkey, rather than to those in Lebanon and Israel. It is thought that the species was introduced from a Turkish region to Anaklia, which was an important trade location at the eastern Black Sea coast until the late 18th century. This is the first established location of this species outside the eastern Mediterranean area. Climate and competition with rock lizards of the genus Darevskia are the most likely reasons preventing expansion of the species into the neighboring areas of Western Georgia.  相似文献

This paper focuses on the contributions of Chris Lebron's book The Making of Black Lives Matter: The History of an Idea. Specifically, I examine his discussion of James Baldwin, Martin Luther King, Jr., and Audre Lorde and their opinions about love for their community, black self-actualization, and black liberation. I consider whether or not rage should play a role in our opinions about the #BlackLivesMatter movement and discuss whether or not it hurts the pursuit of freedom. I agree with the importance to look to the past in order to inform our political behaviour moving forward. Nonetheless, if we are to align with the #BlackLivesMatter movement, we must be willing to challenge what is often considered to be “proper” dissent. The review concludes with hypotheses about what black Americans should do as we work to reimagine a society where oppression is not integral to the maintenance of the American project.  相似文献

Most post-conflict reconciliatory exercises make it incumbent upon survivors to forgive, and seek closure as a demonstration of ‘moving on’. Various anthropologists have criticized reconciliation and related forms of ‘alternative justice’ extensively but within the framework of maintaining social bonds and the rule of law. In this introduction, I reflect critically on the interdisciplinary scholarship on reconciliation, apology, and forgiveness, and theorize irreconciliation as a less examined lens of analysis. Rather than being in opposition to ‘peace’, irreconciliation allows us to interrogate the status quo by refusing to forgive endemic impunities, particularly in the aftermath of staged processes of justice and the absence-presence of the rule of law. In this special issue of the JRAI, I ethnographically explore irreconciliation's links with law, aesthetics, temporality, resistance, and control to locate its multiple analytical manifestations. Irreconciliation allows an important examination of the rule of law within processes of unresolved genocidal injustices and debates relating to slavery, Black Lives Matter, and institutional responses.  相似文献

Patients with Bloom’s syndrome (BS) show a strong genetic instability and a predisposition to all types of cancer. Here, we report that the Bloom’s syndrome protein (BLM) is cleaved in response to hydroxyurea (HU)- or UVC-induced apoptosis. The appearance and solubility of BLM proteolytic products differed according to whether proteolysis occurred in response to HU or UVC. One BS cell line homozygous for a null mutation in BLM was resistant to both UVC- and HU-induced apoptosis, while another one expressing a mutated BLM protein was resistant to HU-induced apoptosis but displayed normal sensitivity to UVC. Thus, UVC and HU appear to induce apoptosis through distinct pathways.

The cancer chemotherapy drug bleomycin (BLM) is a potent inducer of genetic damage in a wide variety of assays. The radioprotectors cysteamine (CSM) and WR-1065 have been shown in previous studies to potentiate the induction of micronuclei and chromosome aberrations by BLM in Go human lymphocytes. By contrast, WR-1065 is reported to reduce the induction of hprt mutations by BLM in Chinese hamster cells. To elucidate the basis for these interactions, we examined the effects of CSM and WR-1065 on the induction of mitotic gene conversion by BLM in the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Treatment with BLM causes a dose-dependent increase in the frequency of mitotic gene conversion and gene mutations. Unlike its potentiation of BLM in G0 lymphocytes, WR-1065 protected against the recombinagenicity of BLM in yeast. CSM was also strongly antirecombinagenic under some conditions., but the nature of the interaction depended strongly on the treatment conditions. Under hypoxic conditions, cysteamine protected against BLM, but under oxygenrich conditions CSM potentiated the genetic activity og BLM. The protective effect of aminothiols against BLM may be ascribed to the depletion of oxygen required for the activation of BLM and the processing of BLM-induced damage. Aminothiols may potentiatc the effect of BLM by acting as an electron source for the activation of BLM and/or by causing conformational alterations that make DNA more accessible tc BLM. The results indicate that aminothiols have a strong modulating influence on the genotoxicity of BLM in yeast as they do in other genetic assays. Moreover, the modulation differs markedly depending on physiological conditions. Thus, yeast assays help to explain why aminothiols have been observed to potentiate BLM in some genetic systems and to protect against it in others.  相似文献

Social media is growing as a technological and social phenomenon, with billions of people using it every day around the world. Given its increasing ubiquity, researchers continue to seek to understand social media and its implications for the social world. Part of the growing body of scholarship on social media includes uncovering the most effective methodologies for exploration that appropriately consider differences between the technology of social media and the ways in which people use them. New directions for social media research include the use of big data and analysing the socio-technical nature of social media. Using data from an ongoing study on college Millennials that includes questions about their thoughts on the Black Lives Matter movement, the author suggests another direction for future research: studying the implications of social media as an informational source.  相似文献

黑戈壁是戈壁中最为干旱的区域,为了系统的研究其植被及物种多样性,该研究采用无人机航拍和实地调查的方法,对中国西北内陆的黑戈壁进行了分析研究。结果表明:(1)中国西北内陆的黑戈壁地区共记录植物154种,分属28科,85属;植物生活型组成简单,主要以灌木、半灌木及多年生草本植物为主,占植物物种比例的70%以上。(2)在植物物种组成方面,与整个荒漠区比较,黑戈壁地区物种数量少,但灌木所占比例远高于荒漠区。(3)黑戈壁地区植物科、属内物种组成贫乏,科内属、种数量比较多的为藜科、菊科、豆科等。(4)黑戈壁地区优势群落的建群种为红砂、盐生草、膜果麻黄等,中国特有植物为新疆沙拐枣、哈密黄蓍、胀果甘草等,主要国家保护植物有胡杨、裸果木、胀果干草等。(5)黑戈壁地区植物区系表征科主要为蒺藜科、蓼科、麻黄科等,而属的分布型以地中海区、西亚至中亚分布及北温带分布为主,占黑戈壁地区总属的47%以上,是群落组成的优势种和建群种。(6)与其他荒漠地区植物区系相比,黑戈壁地区植物旱生种比例增加,适应类型更为贫乏,缺乏特有成分,具有明显残遗性;由于特殊极端干旱环境,形成黑戈壁地区特殊植物类群和区系特征;黑戈壁地区是荒漠地区的区域特色植物物种资源和基因资源的重要区域和保存地,而黑戈壁生态系统非常脆弱,一旦破坏,将很难恢复。  相似文献

Black Box (Eucalyptus largiflorens) is a dominant floodplain tree in the Murray–Darling Basin. In northern Victoria, the health of Black Box woodlands has declined as a consequence of river regulation and drought. This has raised concern about the long‐term survival of populations. Although tree health and regeneration of this species are entwined with flooding, there is limited knowledge of its response to environmental watering. This inhibits the effective implementation of management actions to secure the long‐term survival of floodplain Black Box populations. We investigated the effect of flooding history on Black Box tree health, population status and regeneration at 26 sites within the Murray Sunset National Park, Victoria. Sites were assessed under two flooding treatments: (1) ‘recently flooded’ (sites frequently flooded within the last 5 years and (2) ‘historically flooded’ (sites not flooded since 1993). Black Box populations in recently flooded sites had a greater range of life stages present and fewer dead trees, indicating a healthier and more sustainable population structure. In addition, trees were in better health with higher canopy condition and reproductive output (e.g. flowers and fruits), and the average tree diameter was greater than in historically flooded sites. Seedlings and saplings were present only at recently flooded sites, indicating that water availability and tree health are a strong determinant of regeneration in these landscapes. Flooding is an important factor in the sustainability of Black Box populations in this Victorian semi‐arid floodplain. A key recommendation is that managed flows should be implemented to target populations in poor condition. Although regular flooding is required to maintain or improve the health of Black Box populations, developing the optimum flow regime (timing, frequency and duration) to facilitate this outcome requires further investigation.  相似文献

In our reading of Chocolate Cities: The Black Map of American Life as a work of liberation sociology, we discuss contributions to Black critical thought and praxis this book uniquely makes. Hunter and Robinson craft a Black-owned analytical approach by rezoning the United States map into a charting of African American social and cultural milestones. To apply the re-centering methodological and theoretical innovations this book encourages, we extend its themes to the contested racialized terrains of literacy and education in the US. One contemporary response to systemic educational racism, Black homeschooling, is reconceptualized as a resistance movement. Inspired by the provocative work Hunter and Robinson have done, we situate the Black homeschooling within the tradition of critical Black thought, and its enduring emancipatory warrant.  相似文献

我国西北地区内陆分布着近20万km~2的黑戈壁,由于其环境的特殊性,使其具有独特的生态系统,境内分布着多样的植被,蕴藏着大量特有的自然资源。但由于自然环境苛刻与交通条件不便,目前我国关于黑戈壁区系统的植被与物种多样性的研究还很缺乏。针对黑戈壁区植物多样性组成与分布特点,基于遥感及实地调查,采用DCCA排序和半变异函数模型等分析方法,对黑戈壁区植物群落组成,植物多样性特点及影响因素进行分析。研究结果表明:研究区植物以藜科和蒺藜科灌木或半灌木为主,群落物种生活型具有逐渐趋于简单甚至单一的特性,重要值0.1的植物主要有梭梭、红砂、白刺等13种;群落物种多样性呈现区域性的斑块化分布,结构性因子引起的物种多样性空间异质性占主导地位;作为极端干旱区,该区植物群落类型具有贫乏化及单一化的趋势,群落结构简单,植被覆盖度低,植物生长随环境的变化具有明显的可塑性,群落空间分异明显,群落空间演变具有明显的水分及土壤结构梯度;DCCA结果显示气候、土壤、地形是群落物种及类型变化的主要原因,海拔、坡位、土壤机械组成、降水、温度等环境因子对群落有着显著的影响,水土条件的空间异质性是戈壁植物多样性维持的关键因素。  相似文献

ABSTRACTBloom syndrome (BS) is a rare human autosomal recessive disorder characterized by marked genetic instability associated with greatly increased predisposition to a wide range of cancers affecting the general population. BS arises through mutations in both copies of the BLM gene which encodes a 3’-5’ DNA helicase identified as a member of the RecQ family. Several studies support a major role for BLM in the cellular response to DNA damage and stalled replication forks. However, the specific function(s) of BLM remain(s) unclear. The BLM protein is strongly expressed and phosphorylated during mitosis, but very little information is available about the origin and the significance of this phosphorylation. We show here that ATM kinase provides only a limited contribution to the mitotic phosphorylation of BLM. We also demonstrate that BLM is directly phosphorylated at multiple sites in vitro by the mitotic cdc2 kinase, and identify two new sites of mitotic BLM phosphorylation: Ser-714 and Thr-766. Our results identify BLM helicase as a new substrate for cdc2, which may have potential physiological implications for the role of BLM in mitosis.  相似文献

Drawing on evidence from a study of Black Police Associations in English and Welsh constabularies, this article addresses perceived changes in the articulation of racialized relations within the police during the years following Lord Macpherson's Report about the police investigation of Stephen Lawrence's murder. Association officials argued that overt racism has been replaced by covert racism, evidence of which is, by definition, difficult to establish. Black Police Association officials’ and senior officers’ views of this change are discussed. Sources of evidence of covert racism are described and analysed, often related to Macpherson's definition of ‘institutional racism’. The wider implications of the article for the study of race and ethnicity are then discussed, with particular reference to Brubaker's recent work on ethnicity as cognition, which underpins the analysis of all the data gathered.  相似文献

Chocolate Cities is a work of Black urban studies, treating the entire US as a variegated “South.” Despite regional differences the US retains its endemic white supremacism. Based on this recognition, the authors argue, it is necessary to reimagine and revaluate the breadth and depth of Blackness throughout the country. The authors proceed virtually to reinvent Black urban sociology and thoroughly to reinterpret Black cultural studies. In doing so they challenge US census data and much of the sociology of race, as well as drawing on a wealth of intellectual, political, and popular cultural resources that explore the breadth and depth of Black peoplehood. In many ways, Chocolate Cities returns us to the Black nationalist framework: W. E. B. Du Bois, Malcolm X, Zora Neale Hurston, Ida B. Wells Barnett, Aretha Franklin, and Tupac Shakur all appear here, as do intersectionality studies, LGBT activism, and the Movement for Black Lives.  相似文献

A new species of nematodes, Pellioditis obesasp. n., found in rotting seaweed in the supralittoral area of the Black Sea near Sevastopol (Ukraine) is described and illustrated. The new species is morphologically similar to P. ehrenbaumi(Bresslau and Sch. Stekhoven, 1935); but it differs in having a narrow protostoma cylinder, a shorter female tail, larger eggs, longer spicules and gubernaculum, and in the ratio of the anterior pharynx length to the posterior pharynx length.  相似文献

Lead contamination is a global problem affecting a large number of bird species around the world. Among the different avian guilds, vultures and facultative scavengers are particularly threatened by this toxic metal. However, little information is available about differences in exposure to this metal for sympatric vulture species that share food resources. We compared blood lead concentrations of two closely related sympatric obligate scavenger species, the abundant Black Vulture Coragyps atratus and the threatened Andean Condor Vultur gryphus in north-western Patagonia, Argentina. We sampled 28 Andean Condors and 29 Black Vultures trapped foraging in the same area in the steppe. We also sampled 16 Black Vultures foraging in a rubbish dump to determine whether there were differences in lead contamination among foraging sites. Andean Condors had significantly higher mean blood lead concentrations than Black Vultures. There was no difference in lead concentrations between Black Vultures trapped in the steppe and in the rubbish dump. The prevalence and probability of lead concentrations above the threshold level (20 µg/dL) was higher for Andean Condors than for Black Vultures, potentially producing different effects on their health. This disparity in lead contamination may be due to differences in their foraging habits or in their susceptibility to this toxic metal. Overall, our results suggest caution in using an abundant surrogate species to infer lead contamination in a closely related but harder to sample species.  相似文献
