Herbivores directly and indirectly affect ecosystem functioning in forests. Feces deposition is a direct effect that supplies ephemeral N pulses to soils. Herbivore-mediated changes in plant N allocation and uptake are indirect effects that can also influence soil N availability. These effects may interact if defoliation influences the ability of plants to recover fecal N, and this may affect subsequent generations of herbivores. We added 15N-enriched insect feces (frass) to a series of replicated red oak, Quercus rubra, mesocosms that had been damaged experimentally and then followed the frass N over the course of 2 years. In the first season, some frass N was mineralized in the soil and leached in organic form from the mesocosms within 1 week of deposition. Within 1 month, frass N had been acquired by the oaks and enriched the foliage; late-season herbivores assimilated the frass N within the same growing season. In the second season, herbivore damage from the previous year lowered total leaf N contents and 15N recovered in the foliage. A subsequent cohort of early-season herbivores fed on this foliage consequently derived less of their N from the previous year’s frass, and feral leaf rollers colonized fewer of these saplings. The 0- to 5-cm soil fraction was the largest N sink measured, and 42% of the frass N was recovered in the soil. The results demonstrate that: (1) some frass N can be recycled rapidly into foliage and assimilated by successive cohorts of herbivore within the same season; (2) damage can affect N allocation in the following year’s foliage, influencing N availability to and host selection by herbivores; and (3) leaching losses occur soon after deposition but are buffered by soil pools, which are the largest sinks for frass N.

Although there is a growing body of evidence that herbivorous insects have a significant impact on decomposition and soil nutrient dynamics through frass excretion, how mixtures of leaf litter and insect frass influence such ecosystem processes remains poorly understood. We examined the effects of mixing of leaf litter and insect frass on decomposition and soil nutrient availability, using a study system consisting of a willow, Salix gilgiana Seemen, and a herbivorous insect, Parasa consocia Walker. The chemical characteristics of insect frass differed from those of leaf litter. In particular, frass had a 42-fold higher level of ammonium–nitrogen (NH4 +–N) than litter. Incubation experiments showed that the frass was decomposed and immobilized with respect to N more rapidly than the litter. Furthermore, litter and frass mixtures showed non-additive enhancement of decomposition and reduction of NH4 +–N, depending on the litter–frass mixing ratio. These indicate that, while insect frass generally accelerated decomposition, the effect of frass on soil nutrient availability was dependent largely on the relative amounts of litter and frass.

Insect herbivory can strongly influence ecosystem nutrient dynamics, yet the indirect effects of herbivore‐altered litter quality on subsequent decomposition remain poorly understood. The northern tamarisk beetle Diorhabda carinulata was released across several western states as a biological control agent to reduce the extent of the invasive tree Tamarix spp. in highly‐valued riparian ecosystems; however, very little is currently known about the effects of this biocontrol effort on ecosystem nutrient cycling. In this study, we examined alterations to nutrient dynamics resulting from beetle herbivory in a Tamarix‐invaded riparian ecosystem in the Great Basin Desert in northern Nevada, USA, by measuring changes in litter quality and decomposition, as well as changes in litter quantity. Generally, herbivory resulted in improved leaf litter chemical quality, including significantly increased nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) concentrations and decreased carbon (C) to nitrogen (C:N), C:P, N:P, and lignin:N ratios. Beetle‐affected litter decomposed 23% faster than control litter, and released 16% more N and 60% more P during six months of decomposition, as compared to control litter. Both litter types showed a net release of N and P during decomposition. In addition, herbivory resulted in significant increases in annual rates of total aboveground litter and leaf litter production of 82% and 71%, respectively, under the Tamarix canopy. Our finding that increased rates of N and P release linked with an increased rate of mass loss during decomposition resulting from herbivore‐induced increases in litter quality provides new support to the nutrient acceleration hypothesis. Moreover, results of this study demonstrate that the introduction of the northern tamarisk beetle as biological control to a Tamarix‐invaded riparian ecosystem has lead to short‐term stimulation of nutrient cycling. Alterations to nutrient dynamics could have implications for future plant community composition, and thus the potential for restoration of Tamarix‐invaded ecosystems.

Invertebrate herbivore outbreaks have important impacts on system biogeochemical cycling, but these effects have been poorly documented in African savanna ecosystems. In semi‐arid African savannas, outbreaks of the lepidopteran Imbrasia belina (mopane worm) affect discrete patches of the dominant Colophospermum mopane trees; larvae may completely defoliate trees for up to six weeks during each of the early and late growing seasons. We studied the impact of mopane worm outbreaks on the availability of nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K) within mopane savanna by quantifying major nutrient pools in defoliated and non‐defoliated savanna patches, including leaves, leaf litter, worm frass, and the soil beneath trees. Within an outbreak area, approximately 44 percent of trees were infested, supporting ~29,000 worms/ha, leading to ~640 kg/ha dry weight frass deposition at 1.4 g of frass/day‐individual (fourth or fifth instar), compared with an average 1645 kg/ha dry weight of leaf on trees most of which should be deposited by litterfall at the end of the growing season. Frass had twofold higher P, 10 percent higher K, but equivalent N content than litter. Taking frass and litter deposition together, the N, P, and K contents added due to the outbreak event at our study site were 0.88, 5.8, and 2.8 times those measured in non‐outbreak patches, a pattern which was reflected in the nutrient contents of soil surfaces beneath defoliated trees. Invertebrate herbivory appears to be an important driver for mopane savanna but has been largely neglected.

Summary Nitrogen and phosphorus flow in litterfall and throughfall were studied in two California Quercus species (the evergreen Q. agrifolia and deciduous Q. lobata) before, during, and after an outbreak of the California oak moth, Phryganidia californica. All of the foliage of both oak species was removed by the herbivore during the course of this outbreak. During the outbreak, total N and P flow to the ground more than doubled from Q. agrifolia and increased to a lesser extent from Q. lobata over the previous year. The composition of the litter during the outbreak year shifted so that in Q. agrifolia, almost 70% of the total N and P flow to the ground moved through frass and insect remains, while in Q. lobata, approximately 60% of the N and 40% of the P moved through frass and insect remains. Short-term leaching experiments showed that nitrogen was far more rapidly lost from Phryganidia frass than from leaf litter of either species. These results and the relative frequency of Phryganidia outbreaks suggest that this herbivore has significant effects on the nutrient cycling beneath these trees.

We examined how plant genetic variation and a common herbivore (the leaf-galling aphid, Pemphigus betae ) influenced leaf litter quality, decomposition, and nutrient dynamics in a dominant riparian tree ( Populus spp .). Based on both observational studies and a herbivore exclusion experiment using trees of known genotype, we found four major patterns: 1) the quality of galled vs non-galled or gall-excluded litter significantly differed in the concentration of condensed tannins, lignin, nitrogen and phosphorus; 2) the difference in litter quality resulted in galled litter decomposing at rates 34 to 40% slower than non-galled litter; 3) plant genotype and herbivory had similar effects on the magnitude of decomposition rate constants; and 4) plant genotype mediated the herbivore effects on leaf litter quality and decomposition, as there were genotype-specific responses to herbivory independent of herbivore density. In contrast to other studies that have demonstrated accelerated ecosystem properties in response to arthropod herbivory, our findings argue that herbivore-induced secondary compounds decelerated ecosystem properties though their "after-life" effects on litter quality. Furthermore, these data are among the first to suggest that genotype-specific responses to herbivores can have a major impact on decomposition and nutrient flux, which likely has important consequences for the spatial distribution of nutrients at the landscape level. Due to the magnitude of these effects, we contend that it is important to incorporate a genetic perspective into ecosystem studies.

Evidence is growing that invasive species can change decomposition rates and associated nutrient cycling within an ecosystem by changing the quality of the litter entering a system. However, the relative contribution of their distinct litter types to carbon turnover is less understood, especially in the context of enhanced N deposition. The objective of this study was to investigate the whole-plant responses of an invasive plant Flaveria bidentis in litter decay to simulated N eutrophication. A 1-year study was conducted to assess if N enhancement influenced decomposition and nutrient dynamics of litters from foliage, fine roots and twigs of F. bidentis compared to co-occurring native species Setaria viridis. N fertilization significantly decreased the decomposition rate of the foliage of the invasive F. bidentis by more than 25% relative to the water control, but had relatively minor effects on decomposition of its twigs and fine root litter or leaf litter from the native species. Collectively, decomposition rates of foliar litters of the invasive and native species become convergent over time in the presence of N addition. Moreover, net N loss was predominately influenced by litter species, followed by the litter type, while N addition had little effect on net N loss. Our study showed that the variation in litter decomposition was much greater between litter types of the invasive F. bidentis than between different plant species under the N addition and that the litter of invasive species with higher inherent decomposability did not always decompose more rapidly than the litter of native species in response to predicted N deposition enhancement.

Genetically based trait in a dominant tree affects ecosystem processes
Fundamental links between genes and ecosystem processes have remained elusive, although they have the potential to place ecosystem sciences within a genetic and evolutionary framework. Utilizing common gardens with cottonwood trees of known genotype, we found that the concentration of condensed tannins is genetically based and is the best predictor of ecosystem‐level processes. Condensed tannin inputs from foliage explained 55–65% of the variation in soil net nitrogen (N) mineralization under both field and laboratory conditions. Alternative associations with litter lignin, soil moisture or soil temperature were relatively poor predictors of litter decomposition and net N mineralization. In contrast to the paradigm that the effects of genes are too diffuse to be important at the ecosystem‐level, here we show that plant genes had strong, immediate effects on ecosystem function via a tight coupling of plant polyphenols to rates of nitrogen cycling.

Plant genetic variation and herbivores can both influence ecosystem functioning by affecting the quantity and quality of leaf litter. Few studies have, however, investigated the effects of herbivore load on litter decomposition at plant genotype level. We reduced insect herbivory using an insecticide on one half of field-grown Betula Pendula saplings of 17 genotypes, representing random intrapopulation genetic variation, and allowed insects to naturally colonize the other half. We hypothesized that due to induced herbivore defence, saplings under natural herbivory produce litter of higher concentrations of secondary metabolites (terpenes and soluble phenolics) and have slower litter decomposition rate than saplings under reduced herbivory. We found that leaf damage was 89 and 53% lower in the insecticide treated saplings in the summer and autumn surveys, respectively, which led to 73% higher litter production. Litter decomposition rate was also affected by herbivore load, but the effect varied from positive to negative among genotypes and added up to an insignificant net effect at the population level. In contrast to our hypothesis, concentrations of terpenes and soluble phenolics were higher under reduced than natural herbivory. Those genotypes, whose leaves were most injured by herbivores, produced litter of lowest mass loss, but unlike we expected, the concentrations of terpenes and soluble phenolics were not linked to either leaf damage or litter decomposition. Our results show that (1) the genetic and herbivore effects on B. pendula litter decomposition are not mediated through variation in terpene or soluble phenolic concentrations and suggest that (2) the presumably higher insect herbivore pressure in the future warmer climate will not, at the ecological time scale, affect the mean decomposition rate in genetically diverse B. pendula populations. However, (3) due to the significant genetic variation in the response of decomposition to herbivory, evolutionary changes in mean decomposition rate are possible.

We report data on leaf litter production and decomposition from a manipulative biodiversity experiment with trees in tropical Panama, which has been designed to explore the relationship between tree diversity and ecosystem functioning. A total of 24 plots (2025 m2) were established in 2001 using six native tree species, with 1‐, 3‐, and 6‐species mixtures. We estimated litter production during the dry season 2005 with litter traps; decomposition was assessed with a litter bag approach during the following wet season. Litter production during the course of the dry season was highly variable among the tree species. Tree diversity significantly affected litter production, and the majority of the intermediate diverse mixtures had higher litter yields than expected based on yields in monoculture. In contrast, high diverse mixtures did not show such overyielding in litter production. Litter decomposition rates were also highly species‐specific, and were related to various measures of litter quality (C/N, lignin/N, fibre content). We found no overall effect of litter diversity if the entire litter mixtures were analyzed, i.e. mixing species resulted in pure additive effects and observed decomposition rates were not different from expected rates. However, the individual species changed their decomposition pattern depending on the diversity of the litter mixture, i.e. there were species‐specific responses to mixing litter. The analysis of temporal C and N dynamics within litter mixtures gave only limited evidence for nutrient transfer among litters of different quality. At this early stage of our tree diversity experiment, there are no coherent and general effects of tree species richness on both litter production and decomposition. Within the scope of the biodiversity‐ecosystem functioning relationship, our results therefore highlight the process‐specific effects diversity may have. Additionally, species‐specific effects on ecosystem processes and their temporal dynamics are important, but such effects may change along the gradient of tree diversity.

We conducted a meta‐analysis of 68 studies published between 1982 and 2000 in which the responses of woody plants to natural or simulated herbivore damage and/or insect herbivore performance on control and damaged plants were measured. Cumulative meta‐analyses revealed dramatic temporal changes in the magnitude and direction of the plant and herbivore responses reported during the last two decades. Studies conducted in the 1980s reported increase in phenolic concentrations, reduction in nutrient concentrations and negative effect on herbivore performance, consistently with the idea of induced resistance. In contrast, in the early 1990s when the idea that some types of plant damage may result in induced susceptibility was generally accepted, studies reported non‐significant results or induced susceptibility, and smaller effects on herbivores. The above changes may reflect paradigm shifts in the theory of induced defenses and/or the differences between study systems used in the early and the more recent studies. Overall, plant growth and carbohydrate concentrations were reduced in damaged plants despite enhanced photosynthetic rates. Damage increased the concentrations of carbon and phenolics, while terpene concentrations tended to decrease after damage; changes in nutrient concentrations after damage varied according to nutrient mobility, inherent plant growth rate, ontogenetic stage and plant type (deciduous/evergreen). Early season damage caused more pronounced changes in plants than late season damage, which is in accordance with the assumption that vigorously growing foliage has a greater capacity to respond to damage. Insect growth rate and female pupal weight decreased on previously damaged plants, while herbivore survival, consumption and male pupal weight were not significantly affected. The magnitude and direction of herbivore responses depended on the type of plant, the type of damage, the time interval between the damage and insect feeding (rapid/delayed induced resistance), and the timing of the damage.

Tannins in nutrient dynamics of forest ecosystems - a review
Tannins make up a significant portion of forest carbon pools and foliage and bark may contain up to 40% tannin. Like many other plant secondary compounds, tannins were believed to function primarily as herbivore deterrents. However, recent evidence casts doubts on their universal effectiveness against herbivory. Alternatively, tannins may play an important role in plant–plant and plant–litter–soil interactions. The convergent evolution of tannin-rich plant communities on highly acidic and infertile soils throughout the world, and the intraspecific variation in tannin concentrations along edaphic gradients suggests that tannins can affect nutrient cycles. This paper reviews nutrient dynamics in forest ecosystems in relation to tannins. Tannins comprise a complex class of organic compounds whose concentration and chemistry differ greatly both among and within plant species. Because the function and reactivity of tannins are strongly controlled by their chemical structure, the effects of tannins on forest ecosystem processes are expected to vary widely. Tannins can affect nutrient cycling by hindering decomposition rates, complexing proteins, inducing toxicity to microbial populations and inhibiting enzyme activities. As a result, tannins may reduce nutrient losses in infertile ecosystems and may alter N cycling to enhance the level of organic versus mineral N forms. The ecological consequences of elevated tannin levels may include allelopathic responses, changes in soil quality and reduced ecosystem productivity. These effects may alter or control successional pathways. While a great deal of research has addressed tannins and their role in nutrient dynamics, there are many facets of tannin biogeochemistry that are not known. This lack of information hinders a complete synthesis of tannin effects on forest ecosystem processes and nutrient cycling. Areas of study that would help clarify the role of tannins in forest ecosystems include improved characterization and quantification techniques, enhanced understanding of structure-activity relationships, investigation of the fate of tannins in soil, further determination of the influence of environmental factors on plant tannin production and decomposition, and additional information on the effects of tannins on soil organisms.

The role of phytophagous insects in ecosystem nutrient cycling remains poorly understood. By altering the flow of litterfall nutrients from the canopy to the forest floor, herbivores may influence key ecosystem processes. We manipulated levels of herbivory in a lower montane tropical rainforest of Puerto Rico using the common herbivore, Lamponius portoricensis (Phasmatidea), on a prevalent understory plant, Piper glabrescens (Piperaceae), and measured the effects on nutrient input to the forest floor and on rates of litter decomposition. Four treatment levels of herbivory generated a full range of leaf area removal, from plants experiencing no herbivory to plants that were completely defoliated (>4,000 cm2 leaf area removed during the 76-day study duration). A significant (P<0.05) positive regression was found between all measures of herbivory (total leaf area removed, greenfall production, and frass-related inputs) and the concentration of NO 3 in ion exchange resin bags located in the litter layer. No significant relationship was found between any of the herbivory components and resin bag concentrations of NH 4 + or PO 4 . Rates of litter decay were significantly affected by frass-related herbivore inputs. A marginally significant negative relationship was also found between the litter mass remaining at 47 days and total leaf area removed. This study demonstrated a modest, but direct relationship between herbivory and both litter decomposition and NO 3 transfer to the forest floor. These results suggest that insect herbivores can influence forest floor nutrient dynamics and thus merit further consideration in discussions on ecosystem nutrient dynamics.

Although field studies have demonstrated an ecosystem-specific effect of experimental atmospheric nitrogen (N) deposition on litter decomposition, a mechanistic understanding of how ligninolytic microbial communities respond to atmospheric deposition is lacking. Because high levels of inorganic N suppress lignin decomposition by some basidiomycetes, it is plausible that the abundance and activity of these key microorganisms underlies differential ecosystem responses of decomposition to atmospheric N deposition. We hypothesize that: (a) atmospheric N deposition will cause an ecosystem-specific reduction in basidiomycete activity and abundance with greatest decreases in ecosystems with lignin-rich forest litter and (b) the abundance of lignin degrading basidiomycetes will be positively correlated with ligninolytic enzyme activity. To test these hypotheses, we measured the effects of experimental N deposition on the potential activity of phenol oxidase enzymes, and the abundance of basidiomycete genes encoding laccase, a primary phenol oxidase enzyme, in three hardwood forests spanning a range of leaf litter lignin content. The black oak-white oak (BOWO) contains high lignin litter, the sugar maple-basswood (SMBW) has low lignin litter, and the sugar maple-red oak (SMRO) is intermediate. An ecosystem by N deposition interaction significantly influenced phenol oxidase activity in the surface soil (P = 0.05), where phenol oxidase activity decreased with increasing experimental N deposition in the BOWO ecosystem. No consistent response to N deposition was evident for surface soil phenol oxidase activity within either the SMRO or SMBW ecosystem. This interaction did not influence laccase gene abundance. Instead, basidiomycete laccase gene abundance was reduced by experimental N deposition (main effect) in surface soil. There was only a weak correlation between basidiomycete laccase gene abundance and potential phenol oxidase enzyme activity, suggesting that the abundance of organisms possessing laccase genes may not control phenol oxidase activity in soil. Our results suggest that the regulation of laccase gene expression may mediate the decomposition response to atmospheric N deposition.

Decomposition of Quercus myrtifolia leaf litter in a Florida scrub oak community was followed for 3 years in two separate experiments. In the first experiment, we examined the effects CO2 and herbivore damage on litter quality and subsequent decomposition. Undamaged, chewed and mined litter generated under ambient and elevated (ambient+350 ppm V) CO2 was allowed to decompose under ambient conditions for 3 years. Initial litter chemistry indicated that CO2 levels had minor effects on litter quality. Litter damaged by leaf miners had higher initial concentrations of condensed tannins and nitrogen (N) and lower concentrations of hemicellulose and C : N ratios compared with undamaged and chewed litter. Despite variation in litter quality associated with CO2, herbivory, and their interaction, there was no subsequent effect on rates of decomposition under ambient atmospheric conditions. In the second experiment, we examined the effects of source (ambient and elevated) of litter and decomposition site (ambient and elevated) on litter decomposition and N dynamics. Litter was not separated by damage type. The litter from both elevated and ambient CO2 was then decomposed in both elevated and ambient CO2 chambers. Initial litter chemistry indicated that concentrations of carbon (C), hemicellulose, and lignin were higher in litter from elevated than ambient CO2 chambers. Despite differences in C and fiber concentrations, litter from ambient and elevated CO2 decomposed at comparable rates. However, the atmosphere in which the decomposition took place resulted in significant differences in rates of decomposition. Litter decomposing under elevated CO2 decomposed more rapidly than litter under ambient CO2, and exhibited higher rates of mineral N accumulation. The results suggest that the atmospheric conditions during the decomposition process have a greater impact on rates of decomposition and N cycling than do the atmospheric conditions under which the foliage was produced.

Distinct ecosystem level carbon : nitrogen : phosphorus (C : N : P) stoichiometries in forest foliage have been suggested to reflect ecosystem-scale selection for physiological strategies in plant nutrient use. Here, this hypothesis was explored in a nutrient-poor lowland rainforest in French Guiana. Variation in C, N and P concentrations was evaluated in leaf litter and foliage from neighbour trees of 45 different species, and the litter concentrations of major C fractions were also measured. Litter C ranged from 45.3 to 52.4%, litter N varied threefold (0.68-2.01%), and litter P varied seven-fold (0.009-0.062%) among species. Compared with foliage, mean litter N and P concentrations decreased by 30% and 65%, respectively. Accordingly, the range in mass-based N : P shifted from 14 to 55 in foliage to 26 to 105 in litter. Resorption proficiencies indicated maximum P withdrawal in most species, but with a substantial increase in variation in litter P compared with foliage. These data suggest that constrained ecosystem-level C : N : P ratios do not preclude the evolution of highly diversified strategies of nutrient use and conservation among tropical rainforest tree species. The resulting large variation in litter quality will influence stoichiometric constraints within the decomposer food web, with potentially far-ranging consequences on nutrient dynamics and plant-soil feedbacks.

Home-field advantage (HFA) hypothesis regarding litter decomposition states that litter is decomposed more rapidly in the habitat from which it is derived (i.e., home) than in other habitat (i.e., away) due to local adaptation of soil decomposers. We tested the HFA hypothesis regarding decomposition of leaf litter, insect frass, and their mixtures, using laboratory incubation of leaf litter from an evergreen (Pinus densiflora) and a deciduous (Quercus acutissima) tree species, frass excreted by two insect herbivores (Dendrolimus spectabilis and Lymantria dispar) fed on one of the two trees, and soil collected underneath the two trees. We found evidence that decomposers in each soil were specialized to decompose the litter derived from the tree species above them, indicating that the HFA occurred in litter decomposition. In contrast, the HFA was not detected in the decomposition of insect frass or litter-frass mixtures. Mixing with D. spectabilis frass non-additively decelerated, while mixing with L. dispar frass non-additively accelerated, decomposition of the mixtures, independent of soil and litter types. These indicate that the presence of insect herbivores may make it difficult to form and maintain a decomposer community specialized to a certain leaf litter, and that it may consequently cancel or weaken HFA in litter decomposition.
