In spite of the importance of auditory ossicles in anthropological studies, very little attention has been paid to these bones, which are only rarely recovered in archaeological excavations and in osteological collections. In this paper, we attempt to review some studies that started in the 1960 from when we first collected and prepared ossicles from the early Egyptian osteological collection of Giovanni Marro in Turin (Italy). We attempt to delineate the potential of ear bones in the study of man. In a few cases, archaeological ossicles were discussed in connection with some forms of pathology. Other studies examined the phylogeny of primates based on auditory ossicles. The function of the ossicles is to transmit sound waves to the cochlear endolymph. The energy transmitted through the ossicles is conserved by the action of two levers, which convert the relatively wide and low-energy movements of the hammer into smaller high-energy movements of the stirrup. It is a matter of argument whether the different proportions of the ossicles may imply variations in auditory perception in primates, including man. While the hammer of modern humans and that of the great apes show similar absolute sizes, nevertheless, the ape manubrium is appreciably greater than that of man. This difference, combined with stirrup proportions, causes a strong “low-gear” effect in apes and, as a consequence, probably a different auditory acuity. Although only a few fossil Neanderthal auditory ossicles are known, it may be, nevertheless, of interest studying the ossicles from the viewpoint of vibration transfer impedance function. The methodology may also be appropriate to study the few Australopithecine ossicles that are known. It is a matter of question whether the ossicles may have a meaning in distinguishing human populations; nevertheless, at least a case of clear distinction between human population has been achieved as in the case of Antinoe Roman–Egyptians.  相似文献

The possible origin of the Scarlet ibis population of Cubat?o in southern Brazil, and its levels of genetic diversity and differentiation in relation to populations from the country’s northern coast were investigated through the sequences of 980 base pairs of β-fibrinogen intron 7 from a sample of 37 specimens. A total of 19 haplotypes were recorded in the three populations. Despite observed discrepancies in the levels of genetic diversity (π = 0.0017–0.0033; h = 0.60–0.95), AMOVA, K*st and Fst values all indicated that genetic differentiation among the populations was relatively low. This suggests that the Cubat?o population was isolated recently from the panmictic population that was once distributed all along the Brazilian coast, although it does not totally refute its possible derivation from a specific population on the north coast. Given our results, genetic management should focus on the minimization of inbreeding, especially in the smaller populations, such as Cubat?o. However, a more definitive study, including markers with higher evolutionary rates (e.g. microsatellites) and a much larger sample, would be required before any such actions can be taken.  相似文献

We report the first observations of a linear growth pattern in aboral spine ossicles of adult Acanthaster planci (L.). This is unlike the spine development of other echinoderms. Growth in aboral spine ossicles of A. planci is essentially by addition of stereom at the base and the spine's growth history is preserved along its length. There are numerous growth lines perpendicular to the long axis of the ossicle. These are clearly evident in longitudinal spine sections and apparently caused by frequent growth episodes. There are periodic pigment bands which are parallel to the growth lines and evident on the surface of the ossicle. Basal growth of the spine ossicle and the nature of the growth lines were confirmed by tetracycline staining. Size/frequency analyses of a population of A. planci from Davies Reef (GBR) found spine ossicle growth, but not body diameter growth, over the six month period between sampling dates. The additional pigment banding in spine ossicles of 4 individuals recaptured after 6 months suggests that pigment bands are laid down seasonally. If pigment band cyclicity is validated, it offers a simple method for ageing adults of A. planci in field populations.  相似文献

Recent molecular evidence suggests that Sciurus vulgaris populations from Calabria (southern Italy) are distinct from those occurring in northern and central Italy. Here, we re-analyzed using multivariate and univariate techniques an historical dataset provided by Cavazza (1913), who documented measurements for the now extinct squirrel population from Campania. Both univariate and multivariate analyses confirmed that the sample from Calabria was homogenous and relatively distinct compared to the rest of the squirrel samples.  相似文献

A random sample from the endogamic population of Greek Sarakatsans has been studied for eight blood groups, eleven enzymic genetic systems and haemoglobin variants. The allelic frequencies of the polymorphic loci have been compared with those of other samples from the Greek mainland and other European populations. The Sarakatsans tend to resemble their neighbours. The comparison with European populations indicates that the Sarakatsans have gene frequencies similar to other Mediterranean and European populations. However, the monomorphism of the Kell system, the low frequency of the ACP*B, AK*1 and GLO*1 allelas and the high frequency of the ACP*C, ESD*1 and GPT*1 alleles, are some of the distinguishing features of Sarakatsans. Furthermore, the Sarakatsans are not a high risk population for G6PD deficiency and haemoglobinopathies.  相似文献

I analyzed somatometric measurements from subsets of the Texas and Oregon transplanted troops of Japanese macaques(Macaca fuscata) to reveal secular changes in body size and shape. Body weights of the Texas population (N = 59) are lower than those of the Oregon population(N = 49) and the founding population from Arashiyama. The adult weights of the Oregon population are significantly higher than the founding population from Mihara. There are significant differences in adult circumferential measures and in skinfolds, which are correlated with the increased weight of the Oregon macaques. The adult Texas macaques have longer limb segments in comparison with the adult Oregon troop members, while the latter have significantly longer heads and trunks. Examination of the developing morphological trends through regression analyses on the complete sample suggests distinctive growth patterns for each population. Members of the Texas population start with smaller initial measurements but hold a steeper growth pattern for limb segments, while the Oregon macaques start larger in most measures and show lower growth rates. I argue that these differences in both somatometry and growth patterns are related to the differing climatic conditions under which the translocated macaques have lived. This set of analyses supports the basic arguments for Bergmann’s rule and Allen’s rule.  相似文献

Investigation of the Greek ancestry of populations from northern Pakistan   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Three populations from northern Pakistan, the Burusho, Kalash, and Pathan, claim descent from soldiers left behind by Alexander the Great after his invasion of the Indo-Pak subcontinent. In order to investigate their genetic relationships, we analyzed nine Alu insertion polymorphisms and 113 autosomal microsatellites in the extant Pakistani and Greek populations. Principal component, phylogenetic, and structure analyses show that the Kalash are genetically distinct, and that the Burusho and Pathan populations are genetically close to each other and the Greek population. Admixture estimates suggest a small Greek contribution to the genetic pool of the Burusho and Pathan and demonstrate that these two northern Pakistani populations share a common Indo-European gene pool that probably predates Alexanders invasion. The genetically isolated Kalash population may represent the genetic pool of ancestral Eurasian populations of Central Asia or early Indo-European nomadic pastoral tribes that became sequestered in the valleys of the Hindu Kush Mountains.  相似文献

Summary The frequency of variants of galactose-1-phosphate uridyl transferase was determined among the nine Greek populations by studying a sample of 1570 unselected individuals. Average frequency of normal allele GALT=0.942, galactosemia gene GALT G=0.0021 and the Duarte variant gene GALT D=0.0548 were observed. Frequency of galactosemia heterozygotes among Greeks was similar to that in other Caucasian populations, but the frequency of the Duarte variant was considerably higher. With the exception of two populations, one with low (Epirus) and one with high (Thrace) frequencies, the polymorphism of the Duarte variant displays very similar frequencies in the various Greek population groups.Supported by Grants HD 01 974 and GM 15 253 from the U.S. Public Health Service  相似文献

Presence and features of auditory exostoses were investigated in two cranial samples of Roman imperial age (1st-3rd century A.D.). The skeletal material comes from the necropolises of Portus (Isola Sacra) and Lucus Feroniae (Via Capenate), two towns along the Tevere River, in close relation with the social and economic life of Rome. Deep-rooted differences between the human communities represented by the skeletal samples (83 and 71 individuals, respectively, in this study) are documented both historically and archaeologically. The results show lack of exostoses in the female sex, a negligible incidence among the males of Lucus Feroniae, but a high frequency in the male sample from Isola Sacra (31.3%). Auditory exostoses are commonly recognised as localized hyperplastic growths of predominantly acquired origin. Features of the exostoses found in the male crania from Isola Sacra (particularly in relation to the age at death of the affected individuals) support this view. Furthermore, several clinical and anthropological studies have pointed out close links between the occurrence of auditory exostoses and prolonged cold water exposure, generally due to the practice of aquatic sports, or to working activities involving water contact or diving. In this perspective, the differences observed between the two Roman populations and between the sexes (in Isola Sacra) appear to result from different social habits: the middle class population of Portus habitually used thermal baths, whereas it is probable that thermae were seldom frequented (if at all) by the Lucus Feroniae population represented in the necropolis (mostly composed by slaves or freedmen farm laborers).(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Loss of genetic variation from genetic drift during population bottlenecks has been shown for many species. Red deer (Cervus elaphus) may have been exposed to bottlenecks due to founder events during postglacial colonisation in the early Holocene and during known population reductions in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. In this study, we assess loss of genetic variation in Scandinavian red deer due to potential bottlenecks by comparing microsatellite (n = 14) and mitochondrial DNA variation in the Norwegian and Swedish populations with the Scottish, Lithuanian and Hungarian populations. Bottlenecks are also assessed from the M ratio of populations, heterozygosity excess and from hierarchical Bayesian analyses of their demographic history. Strong genetic drift and differentiation was identified in both Scandinavian populations. Microsatellite variation was lower in both Scandinavian populations compared with the other European populations and mitochondrial DNA variation was especially low in the Swedish population where only one unique haplotype was observed. Loss of microsatellite alleles was demonstrated by low M ratios in all populations except the Hungarian. M ratios’ were especially low in the Scandinavian populations, indicating additional or more severe bottlenecks. Heterozygosity excess compared with the expectation from the number of observed microsatellite alleles suggested a recent bottleneck of low severity in the Norwegian population. Hierarchical Bayesian coalescent analyses consistently yielded estimates of a large ancestral and a small current population size in all investigated European populations and suggested the onset of population decline to be between 5,000 and 10,000 years ago, which coincide well with postglacial colonisation.  相似文献

Biological structure of the population of the island of Hvar was investigated by using the data on anthropometric variation among nine village populations; 24 body and 14 head dimensions were analysed from 487 male and 437 female adult subjects. Univariate and multivariate analyses revealed heterogeneity among the populations, which says much for the strength of the isolating factors on the island. Using correlations of anthropometric and geographic distance, the observed patterns of variation among villages were closely related to geography, suggesting migration to be an important factor in the formation of the island's population structure. Populations of the examined villages were further grouped to form the population of the eastern part and the population of the western part of the island, which have an ethnodemographic and sociocultural basis. The analyses revealed heterogeneity between the populations and thus provided evidence to support the hypothesis about the existence of the genetically different groups living in the same biotope.  相似文献

Vertical profiles of temperature, the flux density and spectralcomposition of irradiance and the vertical distribution of Oscillatoriabourrellyi were measured in the North and South Basins of Windermerein the English Lake District At the population maximum (8–14m) the photon flux was 0.3–14 µmol m2 s1with the waveband 512–580 nm contributing 54–60%of the photosyn-thetically active irradiance. Samples of O.bourrcllyitaken concurrently from 0 and 12 m were analysed to determinethe absorption properties of the populations and the phycoerythrin-relatedfluorescence of individual filaments. The 12 m populations weredistinguished from the surface populations by higher beam absorptioncoefficients at all wavelengths throughout the visible spectrum. These differences were accentuated when the absorption characteristicswere calculated using in situ irradiance profiles. The deeperpopulations consistently absorbed a greater fraction of theavailable irradiance than the shallow populations. This wasdue to an overall increase in the total pigment per cell ratherthan the differential synthesis of phycobiliprotein pigments. These observations were confirmed by both laboratory and fieldexperiments using cultures of O. bourrellyi In these experimentslow white light was sufficient to induce the synthesis of bothphycoerythnn and phycocyanin as well as chlorophyll Mean individualfilament fluorescence also distinguished populations from differentdepths These measurements further demonstrated that filamentswithin a population located at a discrete depth have a widerange of fluorescence. This variation increased with decreasinglight intensity and suggests that phycoerythrin could be usedas a cellular marker to determine the provenance of individualfilaments The benefits of photo-adaptation in O.bourreUyi areanalysed in relation to the variable underwater light climateof Windermere, UK Their ecological significance for this algaduring periods of intense but intermittent stratification ina nutrient-limited environment are discussed. The ecologicalimplications of both intra- and inter-specific variations inthe absorption properties of phytoplankton are discussed inrelation to the use of simple community or populations meansas the data entry points for models of photosynthetic production.  相似文献

A four-site haplotype system at the dopamine D2 receptor locus (DRD2) has been studied in a global sample of 28 distinct populations. The haplotype system spans about 25 kb, encompassing the coding region of the gene. The four individual markers include three TaqI restriction site polymorphisms (RSPs) – TaqI “A”, “B”, and “D” sites – and one dinucleotide short tandem repeat polymorphism (STRP). All four of the marker systems are polymorphic in all regions of the world and in most individual populations. The haplotype system shows the highest average heterozygosity in Africa, a slightly lower average heterozygosity in Europe, and the lowest average heterozygosities in East Asia and the Americas. Across all populations, 20 of the 48 possible haplotypes reached a frequency of at least 5% in at least one population sample. However, no single population had more than six haplotypes reaching that frequency. In general, African populations had more haplotypes present in each population and more haplotypes occurring at a frequency of at least 5% in that population. Permutation tests for significance of overall disequilibrium (all sites considered simultaneously) were highly significant (P<0.001) in all 28 populations. Except for three African samples, the pairwise disequilibrium between the outermost RSP markers, TaqI “B” and “A”, was highly significant with D’ values greater than 0.8; in two of those exceptions the RSP marker was not polymorphic. Except for those same two African populations, the 16-repeat allele at the STRP also showed highly significant disequilibrium with the TaqI “B” site in all populations, with D’ values usually greater than 0.7. Only four haplotypes account for more than 70% of all chromosomes in virtually all non-African populations, and two of those haplotypes account for more than 70% of all chromosomes in most East Asian and Amerindian populations. A new measure of the amount of overall disequilibrium shows least disequilibrium in African populations, somewhat more in European populations, and the greatest amount in East Asian and Amerindian populations. This pattern seems best explained by random genetic drift with low levels of recombination, a low mutation rate at the STRP, and essentially no recurrent mutation at the RSP sites, all in conjunction with an “Out of Africa” model for recent human evolution.  Isozyme analysis of seed samples derived from natural and managed populations of the tropical pine Pinus caribaea vars ‘bahamensis’ and ‘caribaea’ was used to assess population genetic structure in its native range and to detect changes occurring during early domestication of the species. Baseline data from natural populations of the two varieties showed that populations sampled as seed are characterized by high gene diversity (mean He=0.26) and a low level of inbreeding ( mean Fis=0.15). A UPGMA tree of genetic relatedness among populations indicates that the two varieties represent distinct evolutionary units. Within each variety there is significant differentiation among populations, and this is greater for the more fragmented populations of var ‘bahamensis’ (Fst=0.08) than for var ‘caribaea’ (Fst=0.02). Seed from a seed orchard population of var ‘caribaea’ established within its natural range showed no change in genetic diversity but did show a reduced inbreeding coefficient (Fis=0.09) compared with its progenitor populations, suggesting a decrease in selfing and/or biparental inbreeding. A bulked seed sample from an exotic plantation of var ‘bahamensis’ in Australia displayed a large increase in the inbreeding coefficient (Fis=0.324) compared with that found in natural populations, possibly due to elevated self-fertilization. Finally, a bulked seed sample from an exotic plantation population of var ‘caribaea’ from China showed enhanced genetic diversity, an increase in the inbreeding coefficient and more linkage disequilibrium than its presumed progenitor populations. It was also genetically divergent from them. RFLP analysis of chloroplast DNA variation in the Chinese sample suggested that seeds of the related taxa P. elliottii and P. taeda, or seeds derived from hybridization with these taxa growing in the seed production area, had been included in the seed crop during harvesting. We conclude that monitoring of appropriate genetic markers may be an effective means of identifying potentially deleterious genetic changes occurring during forest tree domestication. We assessed levels of genetic diversity and investigated patterns of population structure in three remnant populations of the endangered giant otter, Pteronura brasiliensis, using microsatellite loci. All populations displayed moderate to low levels of heterozygosity and allelic richness (H O 0.56–0.57, A R 4.00–5.15) and effective population sizes were low (N E 10.8–54) although only the Iténez population exhibited the signature of a genetic bottleneck. Population structure analyses revealed a pattern in which the populations of the Upper Amazon, Orinoco and Essequibo drainages comprised partially differentiated segments of a northern South American metapopulation, whereas the population of the Iténez appeared isolated. The observed patterns are congruent with previous mitochondrial DNA analysis which suggested the Iténez and northern South American groups constitute two evolutionary significant units. The results presented here should be considered in planning future policies aiming to manage the recovery of the giant otter across its range.  相似文献

I investigated geographic variation in the Japanese white-toothed shrewCrocidura dsinezumi (Temminck, 1842) (Insectivora, Soricidae) from the Japanese Archipelago and the northern part of the Ryukyu Archipelago. Univariate and multivariate analyses were conducted based on 11 cranial measurements from 14 sampling localities. Overall size variation seemed to follow clinal changes correlated with latitude and longitude of localities, such that northeastern populations were smaller than southwestern ones. The Hokkaido population and the Kuchinoerabujima population were larger than expected based on estimated values, likely due to changes reflecting environmental factors. In contrast, the Tanegashima population was smaller than its estimated value. The northern Ryukyu populations were divergent from the Kyushu population and from each other. Based on patterns of geographic variation, I suggest that all previously described subspecies ofC. dsinezumi are junior synonyms ofC. dsinezumi; and that the Kuchinoerabujima population and the Nakanoshima population likely represent un- described subspecies.  相似文献

Stature and the pattern of body proportions were investigated in a series of six time-successive Egyptian populations in order to investigate the biological effects on human growth of the development and intensification of agriculture, and the formation of state-level social organization. Univariate analyses of variance were performed to assess differences between the sexes and among various time periods. Significant differences were found both in stature and in raw long bone length measurements between the early semipastoral population and the later intensive agricultural population. The size differences were greater in males than in females. This disparity is suggested to be due to greater male response to poor nutrition in the earlier populations, and with the increasing development of social hierarchy, males were being provisioned preferentially over females. Little change in body shape was found through time, suggesting that all body segments were varying in size in response to environmental and social conditions. The change found in body plan is suggested to be the result of the later groups having a more tropical (Nilotic) form than the preceding populations.  相似文献

Habitat fragmentation may influence the genetic make-up and adaptability of endangered populations. To facilitate genetic monitoring of the endangered European ground squirrel (EGS), we analyzed 382 individuals from 16 populations in Central Europe, covering almost half of its natural range. We tested how fragmentation affects the genetic architecture of presumably selectively neutral (12 microsatellites) and non-neutral (the major histocompatibility class II DRB gene) loci. Spatial genetic analyses defined two groups of populations, “western” and “eastern”, with a significantly higher level of habitat fragmentation in the former group. The highly fragmented western populations had significantly lower genetic diversity in both types of markers. Only one allele of the DRB gene predominated in populations of the western group, while four alleles were evenly distributed across the eastern populations. Coefficient of inbreeding values (F IS) calculated from microsatellites were significantly higher in the western (0.27–0.79) than in eastern populations (−0.060–0.119). Inter-population differentiation was very high, but similar in both groups (western F ST = 0.23, eastern F ST = 0.25). The test of isolation by distance was significant for the whole dataset, as well as for the two groups analyzed separately. Comparison of genetic variability and structure on microsatellites and the DRB gene does not provide any evidence for contemporary selection on MHC genes. We suggest that genetic drift in small bottlenecked and fragmented populations may overact the role of balancing selection. Based on the resulting risk of inbreeding depression in the western populations, we support population management by crossbreeding between the western and eastern populations.  相似文献

This article seeks to identify “Greeks” and “non‐Greeks” in “mixed” mortuary contexts in a Greek colony. Specifically, we test the hypothesis that Illyrian and Greek individuals lived and were buried together at the Corinthian colony of Apollonia, Albania (established ca. 600 BC). The pattern of human biological interaction at Apollonia is tested by identifying variation in genetic relatedness using biodistance analysis of dental and cranial nonmetric traits for three sites: Apollonia (n = 116), its founder‐city Corinth (n = 69), and Lofkënd (n = 108), an inland site near Apollonia pre‐dating colonization. Logistic regression analysis estimates that individuals from colonial Apollonia are most closely related to prehistoric Illyrian populations (from Lofkënd and prehistoric Apollonia), rather than Greeks (from Corinth). The phenotypic similarity between colonial Apollonia and prehistoric Illyria suggests that there was a large Illyrian contribution to the gene pool at the colony of Apollonia. However, some trait combinations show low biological distances among all groups, suggesting homogeneity among Illyrian and Greek populations (assessed through pseudo‐Mahalanobis' D2). The degree of phenotypic similarity suggests shared ancestry and long‐term migration throughout these regions. The impacts of missing data and small sample sizes are also considered. Neutral DNA polymorphisms from an 8-kb segment of the dystrophin gene, previously ascertained in a worldwide sample (n= 250 chromosomes), were used to characterize the population ancestral to the present-day human groups. The ancestral state of each polymorphic site was determined by comparing human variants with their orthologous sites in the great apes. The ``age before fixation' of the underlying mutations was estimated from the frequencies of the new alleles and analyzed in the context of these polymorphisms' distribution among 13 populations from Africa, Europe, Asia, New Guinea, and the Americas (n= 860 chromosomes in total). Seventeen polymorphisms older tan 100,000–200,000 years, which contributed ∼90% to the overall nucleotide diversity, were common to all human groups. Polymorphisms endemic to human groups or continentally restricted were younger than 100,000–200,000 years. Africans (six populations) with 13 such sites stood out from the rest of the world (seven populations), where only 2 population-specific variants were observed. The similarity of the frequencies of the old polymorphisms in Africans and non-Africans suggested a similar profile of genetic variability in the population before the modern human's divergence. This ancestral population was characterized by an effective size of about 10,000 as estimated from the nucleotide diversity; this size may describe the number of breeding individuals over a long time during the Middle Pleistocene or reflect a speciation bottleneck from an initially larger population at the end of this period.
