Serum samples of 749 sheep from 75 sheep flocks in Norway, i.e. 361 lambs (6 to 7 months old) and 388 adults (>1.5 year), were analysed for antibodies to Ehrlichia equi. Ten animals from each flock were examined. Seropositive animals were found along the coast of southern Norway from Vestfold to S?r-Tr?ndelag (as far north as 63°38'N). Seropositive sheep were not found in southeast, east or northern Norway. Thirty-two flocks were seropositive, although tick-borne fever had only been diagnosed earlier in half of these. In 78% of the seropositive flocks, more than 80% of the sheep were seropositive. A total of 35.7 % and 36.3 % of lambs and adults were found seropositive, respectively. However, the overall seroprevalence among animals that had been grazing on Ixodes pastures were 0.80 for the lambs and 0.84 for the adults. Mean antibody titres (± SD) (log10) in seropositive lambs and adults were 2.59 (± 0.449) and 2.70 (± 0.481), respectively. No significant differences in either seroprevalence or mean antibody titre between sheep of different ages were obtained in this study. Based on antibodies 94% of sheep flocks on Ixodes pastures were infected with a granulocytic Ehrlichia infection. The association between seropositive flocks and Ixodes infested pasture shows a very high degree of agreement (p < 0.00001). The present study indicates that granulocytic Ehrlichia infection in sheep is underdiagnosed in Norway.  相似文献

Whether Hymenolepis diminuta (Cestoda: Cyclophyllidea) might affect adversely the growth of its host under normal conditions was studied. Rats were divided into four experimental groups: (1) rats infected with the tapeworm and fed ad libitum, (2) uninfected rats fed ad libitum, (3) and infected rats fed isocalorically with (4) uninfected rats. Growth rates of infected rats did not differ from infected animals. Infected, meal fed rats limited to 15 g synthetic diet/day grew as rapidly as their uninfected counterparts, and infected rats fed ad libitum did not consume more food than the comparable infected group. There were no significant differences in consumption or in excrement produced between groups (1) and (2) and groups (3) and (4). Weights attained by the worms were not affected by mode of host feeding (ad libitum or meal fed), whether expressed as wet or dry weight. Since H. diminuta appears not to affect nutrient utilization or consumption in a healthy, unstressed host, at least on a gross level, it probably should be considered an endocommensal.  相似文献

The fungal pathogen Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis contributes to the global decline of amphibians. Although mortality from B. dendrobatidis infections occurs primarily in postmetamorphic individuals, infected tadpoles may suffer reduced growth and developmental rates as a result of oral chytridiomycosis, possibly affecting adult fitness. We conducted a field study in which we examined South African tadpoles for oral chytridiomycosis and compared the body sizes of infected and uninfected individuals of 2 species, Heleophryne natalensis and Strongylopus hymenopus. Presence of B. dendrobatidis was determined by microscopic inspection of mouthparts. Infection prevalence was high in both species, 62.5 and 38.6%, respectively, and infected individuals were significantly larger in both species. The inclusion of developmental stage in the analysis of S. hymenopus body size eliminated the relationship between body size and infection status, suggesting that differences in body size were not due to differences in growth, but to differences in developmental stage of infected larvae. These results suggest that larvae at more advanced developmental stages are more likely to be infected with B. dendrobatidis and that infection in larval amphibians may be dependent on time or developmental status of larvae. Contrary to the results of past studies, there was no evidence that oral chytridiomycosis resulted in decreased growth of tadpoles, despite the occurrence of oral abnormalities in infected individuals of 1 species. Because tadpole performance can subsequently affect the health of anuran populations and because tadpoles can act as reservoirs of infection, the study of B. dendrobatidis in larval amphibians is important to understanding the effects of this emerging disease.  相似文献

Heart failure is often characterized by skeletal muscle atrophy. The mechanisms underlying muscle wasting, however, are not fully understood. We studied 30 Dahl salt-sensitive rats (10 male, 20 female) fed either a high-salt (HS; n = 15) or a low-salt (LS; n = 15) diet. This strain develops cardiac hypertrophy and failure when fed a HS diet. LS controls were matched to HS rats for gender and duration of diet. Body mass, food intake, and muscle mass and composition were measured. Skeletal muscle protein synthesis was measured by isotope dilution. An additional group of 27 rats (HS, n = 16; LS; n = 11) were assessed for expression of genes regulating protein breakdown and apoptosis. Gastrocnemius and plantaris muscles weighed less (16 and 22%, respectively) in HS than in LS rats (P < 0.01). No differences in soleus or tibialis anterior weights were found. Differences in muscle mass were abolished after data were expressed relative to body size, because HS rats tended (P = 0.094) to weigh less. Lower body mass in HS rats was related to a 16% reduction (P < 0.01) in food intake. No differences in muscle protein or DNA content, the protein-to-DNA ratio, or muscle protein synthesis were found. Finally, no differences in skeletal muscle gene expression were found to suggest increased protein breakdown or apoptosis in HS rats. Our results suggest that muscle wasting in this model of heart failure is not associated with alterations in skeletal muscle metabolism. Instead, muscle atrophy was related to reduced body weight secondary to decreased food intake. These findings argue against the notion that heart failure is characterized by a skeletal muscle myopathy that predisposes to atrophy.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE--To detect infection with HIV-1 by IgA and IgM response at birth in children born to HIV-1 seropositive mothers. DESIGN--Western blotting and radioimmune western blotting on stored sera from infected and uninfected babies born to HIV-1 seropositive mothers. Sera were pretreated to remove IgG. SETTING--Parma and Bologna, Italy. SUBJECTS--12 infected and five uninfected babies born to HIV-1 seropositive mothers and three babies born to seronegative mothers. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES--Effectiveness of western blotting and radioimmune western blotting in detecting antibodies to HIV-1 gene products. RESULTS--With conventional western blotting we found IgA class antibodies to HIV-1 proteins in serum from three out of 12 infected children; in two of these three the serum was collected at age 3 months (positive controls). Radioimmune western blotting detected both IgA and IgM antibodies in serum from all infected children tested, whereas all serum from uninfected children born to seropositive and seronegative mothers showed no such antibodies. CONCLUSION--Although the technique should be tested on more patients, radioimmune western blotting seems to be a valuable tool for serological diagnosis of congenital HIV-1 infection at birth in neonates born to seropositive mothers.  相似文献

Parasitism can affect size in gastropods by altering the host's growth rate, but other morphological effects of parasitism have rarely been examined. In this study, the relationship between variation in host morphology and parasitism was examined in a population of the freshwater snail Elimia livescens. Differences were found in the morphology of snails infected with the digenean Proterometra macrostoma and uninfected snails. In order to differentiate between 2 hypotheses to explain these differences in morphology, snails were experimentally infected in the laboratory and several morphological traits were measured after 180 days. One hypothesis suggests that parasite-induced changes in shell development explain differences in morphology between infected and uninfected snails. The other hypothesis suggests that selective mortality of infected hosts explains the difference. In the experiment, differences were found between infected snails and uninfected snails in overall size but not in any measurements of shape. The short duration of the experiment relative to the duration of most infections may account for why field-infected snails differed in shape but experimentally infected snails did not. Parasite-induced changes in growth rate are the most likely explanation for the larger size of infected snails relative to uninfected snails.  相似文献

  • 1 The effects of infection by Epistylis daphniae on its host, Moina macrocopa, were studied in the laboratory at 28°C by comparing the growth, reproduction and survival between infected and uninfected hosts.
  • 2 Infestation by epizoites had little or no effect on the survival of the dadoceran hosts when adequate food was present.
  • 3 The infected cladocerans had lower growth rates as juveniles, lower net reproduction rates as adults, and smaller body size at death than uninfected hosts.
  • 4 The index of infection at different stages in the life cycle was related to the durations of intermoult period. Ranked in order of both index of infection and intermoult duration, the development stages were: old adult > young adult > juvenile.

Inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES) was used to study metallic ions in the intestinal mucosa of ICR mice infected with Echinostoma caproni and the mucosa of uninfected control mice. Infected mucosa (n = 9 with about 100 mg wet weight per sample) were examined at 2 weeks p.i. in mice that were infected with about 25 worms per host. Uninfected mucosa (n = 9 with about 100 mg wet weight per sample) were examined in the same time frame as the infected mucosa. Five metals were measured in the mucosa by ICP-AES analysis, as follows: calcium, potassium, magnesium, sodium and zinc. There were no significant differences (Student's t-test, P > 0.05) in the concentrations of calcium, potassium or zinc in infected versus uninfected mucosa. The concentration of sodium was significantly greater (P < 0.05) in the mucosa of infected versus uninfected mucosa, but the situation was reversed in regard to magnesium.  相似文献

Seasonality and impact of parasitism by the larvae of Rogenhofera bonaerensis (Diptera: Cuterebridae) in pampean grassland mouse (Akodon azarae, Rodentia, Cricetidae) populations were studied in grasslands and cropfield borders near Diego Gaynor (Buenos Aires Province, Argentina), from November 1985 to December 1986. Trapped mice infections ranged from one larva (77%) to four (4%) per host; larvae occurred on tails (75.7%), backs (17.1%), thighs (5.7%), and abdomen (1.4%). Prevalence of larvae occurred in late spring (November and December) (35%), and in fall (March to June) (20%), with a peak of 25% during April and May. In spring these larvae affected 46% of resident and 19% of transient individuals; however, no differences were found between residents and transients in spring or fall. There was no significant relationship between mouse population density and prevalence of parasitism (r = -0.56). The annual percentage of infected rodents changed with age (body size classes): adults (37%) greater than subadults (25%) greater than juveniles (16%); with no differences between the sexes. Similar results were recorded in the spring, but there were no differences in the fall. Significant differences were not detected between stable (22% infected) and disturbed habitats (14% infected). During winter uninfected mice survived better than those infected during the previous fall. In contrast, the summer survival among spring infected mice and noninfected mice was similar. Parasitism showed no effects on reproductive activity and on home range size. Larvae showed strong host specificity for A. azarae (99%). Only one case was recorded in the long-tailed mouse (Oligoryzomys flavescens), and none in the white paunch mouse (Calomys laucha), both species sympatric with A. azarae.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

This study reports on the relationship between Wuchereria bancrofti infection and female body size, intake of blood and fecundity in the mosquito Culex quinquefasciatus, vector of this filarial parasite in Recife (Brazil). Adults from field collected larvae were infected via a membrane feeding procedure, using blood with parasitaemia ranging from 724-6,000 mf/ml. A positive correlation was observed between mosquito size (measured by wing length) and egg production in uninfected females. However, this relationship did not exist in W. bancrofti infected mosquitoes. This change is unlikely to be the result of changes in blood ingestion as no significant difference was found when infected and uninfected females were compared. Variation in egg production observed between trials could not be associated with parasite density in the blood. These results suggest infection with W. bancrofti may disrupt the relationship between mosquito size and egg production during the first gonotrophic cycle of C. quinquefasciatus such that fecundity is sometimes reduced. However, this overall affect is variable and many groups of mosquitoes do not respond in this way.  相似文献

Transmission experiments were performed to elucidate the life cycle of Sarcocystis zuoi found in Norway rats ( Rattus norvegicus ) in China. Two king rat snakes ( Elaphe carinata ) fed sarcocysts from the muscles of 4 naturally infected Norway rats shed sporocysts measuring 10.8 ± 0.7 × 8.0 ± 0.7 μm, with a prepatent period of 8-9 days. Sporocysts from the intestine of 2 experimentally infected king rat snakes were given to the laboratory Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats ( R. norvegicus ) and Kunming (KM) mice ( Mus musculus ). Microscopic sarcocysts developed in the skeletal muscles of SD rats. No sarcocysts were observed in KM mice. Characters of ultrastructure and molecule of sarcocysts from SD rats were confirmed as S. zuoi . Our results indicate that king rat snake is the definitive host of S. zuoi .  相似文献

Rates of oxygen consumption by parasitized and unparasitized sticklebacks were recorded at three levels of activity in February and August. Negative correlations were demonstrated between specific respiratory rates and fish body weights. At routine and maximum activity, infected fish consumed more oxygen than uninfected fish. At minimum activity levels no significant differences in respiration rates were detected. Seasonal variation in respiration rates was attributed to acclimation. Difficulties of determining specific respiration rates for parasitized organisms are discussed and attempts are made to assess the physiological basis of the respiratory and behavioural characteristics of infected fish.  相似文献

In contrast to humans, adult but not infant small animals are resistant to rotavirus diarrhea. The pathophysiological mechanism behind this age-restricted diarrhea is currently unresolved, and this question was investigated by studying the secretory state of the small intestines of adult mice infected with rotavirus. Immunohistochemistry and histological examinations revealed that rotavirus (strain EDIM) infects all parts of the small intestines of adult mice, with significant numbers of infected cells in the ilea at 2 and 4 days postinfection. Furthermore, quantitative PCR revealed that 100-fold more viral RNA was produced in the ilea than in the jejuna or duodena of adult mice. In vitro perfusion experiments of the small intestine did not reveal any significant changes in net fluid secretion among mice infected for 3 days or 4 days or in those that were noninfected (37 +/- 9 microl . h(-1) . cm(-1), 22 +/- 13 microl . h(-1) . cm(-1), and 33 +/- 6 microl . h(-1) . cm(-1), respectively) or in transmucosal potential difference (4.0 +/- 0.3 mV versus 3.9 +/- 0.4 mV), a marker for active chloride secretion, between control and rotavirus-infected mice. In vivo experiments also did not show any differences in potential difference between uninfected and infected small intestines. Furthermore, no significant differences in weight between infected and uninfected small intestines were found, nor were any differences in fecal output observed between infected and control mice. Altogether, these data suggest that rotavirus infection is not sufficient to stimulate chloride and water secretion from the small intestines of adult mice.  相似文献

Different strains of H. nana from man, Norway and white rats were studied in regards to their adaptability. Strains obtained from spontaneously infected white mice and those passaged for several years on white mice served as control. In the course of successive passages the infectivity of these strains, developmental rates of tissue larvae, localization of cystocercoids in the small intestine and mesenteric lymph glands were compared. The strains were found to possess different adaptability to white mice. The strain from white rats had the highest rate of adaptation, the strains from Norway rats and man showed lower adaptation rates, respectively.  相似文献

Summary The impact of the systemic fungus Balansia henningsiana (Clavicipitaceae) on the grass Panicum agrostoides was examined in field and greenhouse studies comparing infected and uninfected plants. Approximately one-half of all plants in three populations located in southern Indiana were infected. In field samples and greenhouse studies infected plants were significantly heavier than uninfected plants and produced significantly more tillers. Infection tended to suppress flowering but occasional asymptomatic tillers on infected plants produced healthy inflorescences. Although infected plants produced fewer inflorescences than uninfected plants as a proportion of total tillers, absolute numbers of inflorescences were similar in the two groups. Because other grasses infected by different species of Balansia and related fungi often are more resistant to insect damage, pest damage was quantified in one population. No differences between infected and uninfected plants were detected in levels of herbivory but infected plants had significantly less damage by the common leaf spot fungus Alternaria triticina. The results suggest that there is no selective disadvantage for plants infected by B. henningsiana.  相似文献

Glucose and methionine were malabsorbed in some intestinal regions of turkeys infected with Eimeria meleagrimitis, E. adenoeides, or E. dispersa. The decrease in absorption was not always related to the numbers of parasites in the cells or the extent of damage to the mucosa. With E. adenoeides, malabsorption was found in the jejunum even though parasites were not present. Conversely, with E. dispersa, no malabsorption was observed in the duodenum even though light microscopy showed numerous parasites. In many intestinal regions, damage to the mucosal surface visible with scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was slight or absent, although malabsorption was marked. No changes were noted with SEM in the structure and orientation of the brush border in these regions. Villar height was significantly reduced in the regions of heaviest infection when intestinal damage was visible. Conversely, the crypts of Lieberkühn were often two or three times as deep in infected poults as in uninfected poults. In general, no differences were found in the thickness of the circular and longitudinal muscle layers between the infected and uninfected poults. The dry weight of the intestinal tissue was less from infected poults than from uninoculated controls and was related to both region of the intestine and severity of the infection.  相似文献

Variation in metabolism affects energy budgets of individuals and may serve as a mechanism that influences variation at whole organism or population levels. For example, sex differences in metabolic expenditure may contribute to bioenergetic sources of sexual size dimorphism. We measured oxygen consumption rates of 48 western diamondback rattlesnakes (Crotalus atrox) from a sexually dimorphic population and tested the effects of body mass, body temperature and time of day, in three groups of snakes: males, non-reproductive females, and vitellogenic females. Metabolic rates of male and non-reproductive female C. atrox were similar to rates reported for other rattlesnakes (mass exponents ranging from 0.645–0.670). Oxygen consumption was affected by body mass, body temperature and time of day, and was approximately 1.4 times greater in vitellogenic females than in non-reproductive females. No differences were found between males and non-reproductive females. Accordingly, differences in metabolic rate apparently do not contribute directly to sexual dimorphism in this population. Nevertheless, estimates of size-dependent maintenance expenditure lead us to hypothesize that adult female body size may represent a compromise between selection for increased litter size (accomplished by increasing body size), and selection for increased reproductive frequency (accomplished by decreasing body size, and, therefore inactive maintenance expenditure); this is a mechanistic scenario suggested previously for some endotherms. The cervicovaginal and endometrial isolation rates of Ureaplasma urealyticum and Mycoplasma hominis and relevant demographic data were obtained at the time of laparoscopy in 193 women from infertile marriage. For comparative purposes, fertile women undergoing laparoscopy for tubal ligation (n = 56) or other purposes (n = 64) were also cultured. Blacks were more likely than caucasians to be infected with either organism in all population types (p less than or equal to .05); however, no differences were noted in cervicovaginal carriage rates for blacks in different patient populations. M. hominis was isolated more frequently from tubal reanastomosis patients and less often from infertile patients, p less than or equal to .001. No differences were noted among the infertile subpopulations. Although the isolation rate of U. urealyticum from the different patient populations was similar, one subpopulation within the infertile population (male factor) was identified in which the prevalence of ureaplasmal infection of the female's lower genital tract was over twice as high (p less than or equal to .005) as in other infertile women. Yet there were no statistically significant differences in the demographic data of this subpopulation as compared to the population of infertile women as a whole. No other clinical subpopulation with single or multiple diagnoses not including male factor had an increased prevalence of infection. Eighty percent of infected, infertile couples had no clinical evidence of male factor infertility, indicating that only certain individuals are affected. This possibly explains why previous studies involving small numbers of patients without regard to clinical subpopulations have failed to show significant differences between infected and uninfected couples.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Biomphalaria glabrata infected with Schistosoma mansoni for 33 days fed more often than uninfected snails. Whereas uninfected snails had nocturnal increases in feeding, snails with a 33-day-old infection of S. mansoni fed as often during the day as in the night. Using direct observation and film analysis, we found that feeding increased the heartbeat rate and locomotor activity of B. glabrata. When snails were allowed to feed ad lib., infected snails had higher heartbeat rates than uninfected snails both during the day (P less than 0.01) and the night (P less than 0.001). However, when the snails were deprived of food for 24 hr, infected snails had slightly higher heartbeat rates than uninfected snails only during the day (P less than 0.05). There was no difference between the heartbeat rates of feeding, infected snails and the heartbeat rates of uninfected snails that were starved for 8 hr, and then allowed to feed. Uninfected snails had nocturnal increases in heartbeat rate regardless of feeding schedule, but infected snails had greater nighttime heartbeat rate than daytime heartbeat rate only when they were not allowed to feed. Infected snails had less nocturnal locomotor activity than uninfected snails when feeding, but there was no difference between the locomotor activity of infected and uninfected snails when the snails were deprived of food for 24 hr. Absence of food also resulted in an increased nighttime to daytime ratio of locomotor activity of infected snails. These results suggest that the increased heartbeat rate and altered rhythms of heartbeat rate and locomotor activity in B. glabrata infected with S. mansoni for 33 days were caused by the altered feeding response of these snails.  相似文献
