Plants are important components of any rangeland. However, the importance of desert rangeland plant diversity has often been underestimated. It has been argued that desert rangelands of Tunisia in good ecological condition provide more services than those in poor ecological condition. This is because rangelands in good condition support a more diverse mixture of vegetation with many benefits, such as forage for livestock and medicinal plants. Nearly one-quarter of Tunisia, covering about 5.5 million hectares, are rangelands, of which 87% are located in the arid and desert areas (45% and 42%, respectively). Here, we provide a brief review of the floristic richness of desert rangelands of Tunisia. Approximately 135 species are specific to desert rangelands. The predominant families are Asteraceae, Poaceae, Brassicaceae, Chenopodiaceae, and Fabaceae. These represent approximately 50% of Tunisian desert flora.  相似文献

Soil pH was measured at two different spatial scales in coastal dunes on Norderney, North Sea, and in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Baltic Sea, Germany. Relationships between the variability in soil pH, species richness and species diversity are presented. Species richness and diversity were highest in grey dunes, where soil pH was at intermediate levels; both variables were lower in yellow and brown dunes. The variability in pH increased with increasing species diversity and also with scale. Overall, soil pH variability decreased with increasing vegetation cover. The lowest pH heterogeneity was found in heath dominated by Empetrum nigrum L. and grey dunes dominated by Campylopus introflexus (Hedw.) Brid. Increasing abundance of dominant species and decreasing species diversity of vegetation apparently reduces soil heterogeneity. Decreasing species diversity of vegetation is likely to explain decreasing variability in soil pH.  相似文献

Landscape features are often used as surrogates for biodiversity. While landscape features may perform well as surrogates for coarse metrics of biodiversity such as species richness, their value for monitoring population trends in individual species is virtually unexplored. We compared the performance of a proposed habitat surrogate for birds, percentage cover of vegetation overstory, for two distinct aspects of bird assemblages: community diversity (i.e. species richness) and population trends. We used four different long-term studies of open woodland habitats to test the consistency of the relationship between overstory percentage cover and bird species richness across a large spatial extent (>1000 km) in Australia. We then identified twelve bird species with long-term time-series data to test the relationship between change in overstory cover and populations trends. We found percentage cover performed consistently as a surrogate for species richness in three of the four sites. However, there was no clear pattern in the performance of change in percentage cover as a surrogate for population trends. Four bird species exhibited a significant relationship with change in percentage overstory cover in one study, but this was not found across multiple studies. These results demonstrate a lack of consistency in the relationship between change in overstory cover and population trends among bird species, both within and between geographic regions. Our study demonstrates that biodiversity surrogates representing community-level metrics may be consistent across regions, but provide only limited information about individual species population trends. Understanding the limitations of the information provided by a biodiversity surrogate can inform the appropriate context for its application.  相似文献

为研究草地植被对水淹干扰的响应 ,在松嫩平原羊草 (Aneurolepidiumchinense)草地 1998年部分遭受水淹的吉林省大安市三家甸子草场内设置了经历不同水淹强度的样带 ,并对这些样带的植被组成及物种多样性特征进行了比较研究。结果表明 :1)在植被的水分生态类型功能群组成中 ,随水淹干扰强度的增加 ,湿生、湿中生类植物功能群的优势度比例基本上是逐渐增加的 ,中生、中旱生类植物功能群的优势度比例则逐渐减小 ;2 )在植被的生活型功能群组成中 ,随水淹干扰强度的增加 ,一年生植物的优势度比例呈单峰型变化 ,地下芽植物比例增加 ,地面芽植物比例减小。某些单个物种优势度比例的不规则变化和功能群组成的规则变化表明 ,生态补偿作用不仅仅存在于植物群落的各个功能群之间 ,而且存在于同一功能群内部的不同物种之间 ;3)群落的物种丰富度、多样性在经历中等强度水淹干扰的样带上较高 ,而在未受干扰的对照样带和受干扰较为严重的样带都较低 ,这有力地支持了中度干扰假说。  相似文献

The biodiversity and distribution of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) in different ecosystems and plant communities in China has received increasing interest over the past decades. This has led to a steady increase in the number of scientific papers published on this topic. Studies have surveyed AMF-colonizing rhizospheres of most families of angiosperms, bryophytes, pteridophytes, and gymnosperms. China has about 30,000 plant species (one eighth of the plant species worldwide). A total of 104 AMF species within nine genera, including 12 new species, have been reported in environments such as croplands, grasslands, forests, and numerous disturbed environments. In this paper, we review data published over the past 20 years on AMF community composition and species distribution, the mycorrhizal status of plants, AMF spore communities in different habitats, and germplasm collections in China. Possible future trends in the study of the biodiversity of AMF are also briefly discussed. In particular, the aim of our review is to make some of the recent work published in the Chinese literature accessible to a wider international audience.  相似文献

The spread of competitive grasses, changes in species composition and vegetation structure are direct consequences of grassland and heathland abandonment. As an alternative to more costly management measures such as traditional pastoralism, year-round low-intensity grazing with large herbivores is increasingly used to restore and maintain semi-open habitats. However, the suitability of this grazing regime has not yet been investigated for long-abandoned, highly degraded but nutrient-poor sandy grassland and heathland communities. In particular, it is unclear if year-round grazing is suitable for preventing the further spread of highly competitive grasses such as Calamagrostis epigejos while simultaneously maintaining or improving characteristic species richness and vegetation structure. Hence, we conducted a comprehensive field study on two spatial scales (plot-level: 25 m2, macroplot-level: 1 ha) to analyse the impacts of year-round low-intensity cattle and horse grazing on the development of the highly competitive grass Calamagrostis epigejos, as well as the vegetation structure and plant species richness of long-abandoned but nutrient-poor dry sandy grassland and heathland communities, their mosaics and Calamagrostis stands within an 800 ha heathland between 2008 and 2015. Finally, we assessed the local conservation status of the habitat types after seven years of grazing in comparison to long-abandoned sites.Grazing successfully reduced the coverage of Calamagrostis epigejos, whereby Calamagrostis stands developed towards species-rich sandy grasslands after seven years of grazing. In addition, the quality of the vegetation structure was improved by enhancing the proportion of bare soil, while litter and grass cover, litter thickness and height of the field layer as well as the coverage of ruderal indicators were significantly reduced on grazed sites in comparison to ungrazed sites in 2015. Moreover, we found an overall positive grazing effect on species richness: Total species number, number of target species as well as subordinated target species significantly increased within the vegetation types over time.Thus, year-round low-intensity cattle and horse grazing is a suitable management tool for restoring, maintaining and even improving long-abandoned, nutrient-poor sandy grassland and heathland communities, and thus to enhance the local conservation status of the habitat types. However, if there is a high initial cover of woody species (e.g. shrubs, tree rejuvenation), then an extensive shrub and tree clearance will be necessary, with manual shrub cutting being crucial to reduce the heavy regrowth of the woody species. In addition, a one-time mowing should be implemented in highly degraded heaths to facilitate the vegetative rejuvenation of degenerate stands of Calluna vulgaris, thus improving its attractiveness for the grazing animals.  相似文献

Question: Is ombrotrophic bog vegetation in an oceanic region of southwestern Sweden changing in the same direction over a five year period (1999 ‐ 2004) as northwest European bogs in the last 50 years, i.e. towards drier and more eutrophic vegetation? Location: The province of Halland, southwestern Sweden. Methods: Changes in species composition were monitored in 750 permanently marked plots in 25 ombrotrophic bogs from 1999 to 2004. Changes in species occurrences and richness were analysed and a multivariate statistical method (DCA) was used to analyse vegetation changes. Results: The species composition changed towards wetter rather than drier conditions, which is unlike the general pattern of vegetation change on bogs in northwestern Europe. Species typical of wetter site conditions including most Sphagnum species increased in abundance on the bogs until 2004. The total number of species per plot increased, mostly due to the increased species richness of Sphagnum species. Nitrogen‐demanding (eutrophic) species increased in occurrence. Conclusions: Ombrotrophic bog vegetation in an oceanic region in Sweden became wetter and was resilient to short‐term climatic shifts, after three years of below normal precipitation followed by several years with normal precipitation levels. Shifts towards more nitrogen demanding species were rapid in this region where the deposition levels have been high for several decades.  相似文献

Grass (Poaceae) richness patterns across China’s nature reserves   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Explaining grass richness patterns over broad geographic scales is a central issue of biogeography and macroecology. In this investigation, we document the richness patterns of grasses across China’s nature reserves, and discuss their possible explanations at national and regional scales using grass richness data coupled with information from climatic and topographical variables. Our results suggest that the water- and energy-related variables and elevation range (a surrogate of topographical heterogeneity) represent the primary explanations for the variation in grass richness across China’s nature reserves. Significant relationships were found between energy and all grasses, water and C3 grasses, and the combination of water and energy and C4 grasses at the national scale. Topographical heterogeneity is strongly associated with grass richness across China, whereas climatic constraints to grass diversity vary regionally. In regions of high rainfall, the presence of C4 grasses is determined by annual potential evapotranspiration and sunshine hours; the climatic constraint to C3 grass richness in a large and varied region is sunshine hours; whereas in regions of low soil temperature, the temperature determines the grass richness pattern. Our results also suggest that water variables alone do not represent the primary predictor of grass richness at the regional scale.  相似文献

Question: How does the dominance of Calamagrostis epigejos influence species turnover of a grassland? Location: Loess grassland at the foothills of Bükk Mountains, Hungary (47°54’ N., 20°35’ E). Methods: Presence/absence of vascular plants and different performance attributes of C. epigejos were recorded in a plot‐subplot system between 2002 and 2005. Appearance and disappearance rates of grassland species were calculated for pairs of consecutive years. 1. Mean appearance and disappearance rates were compared in grassland plots dominated by C. epigejos and in plots free from this species, based on Monte Carlo randomization. 2. Mean appearance rates were assessed for categories of C. epigejos performance and their confidence intervals were calculated via Monte Carlo randomization. For two performance variables (percentage cover and shoot number) analyses were performed at two spatial scales. Results: 1. C. epigejos.‐dominated plots differed from unaffected ones by significantly lower appearance rates. 2. Change in appearance rates was best explained by differences in percentage cover of C. epigejos. Coarse‐scale C. epigejos performance had a closer correspondence with appearance rate change than fine‐scale performance. Low level C. epigejos performance enhanced appearance rate compared to intact stands, while high level performance decreased it, regardless of the choice of performance measure. Conclusions: C. epigejos lowers species number by hindering reappearance of species of the original grassland. This is best explained by the increased shading effect at the coarse scale. The marked non‐linear initial enhancement in appearance rate, however, can also be taken as an early sign of future species loss.  相似文献

Abstract. Short-term field experiments are often used to predict and evaluate long-term management effects. Based on a mowing experiment in two calcareous fens near Lake Neuchâtel, Switzerland, we investigated whether short-term treatment effects (i.e. during the first four years) were confirmed by long-term results (13 - 14 yr). Plots were mown in summer or in winter or left unmown. The main long-term trends in overall species composition (based on percentage cover estimates) were already observable in the first four years: mown and unmown plots diverged, whereas summer-cut and winter-cut plots remained similar. At the individual species level, however, short-term and long-term treatment effects differed considerably: many species whose abundance seemed affected by treatments during the first four years showed no response in the long term, and vice versa. These discrepancies were similar when based on cover estimates or on counts of shoots. Species responses did actually depend on the time scale considered. Short-term and long-term treatment effects on species richness were similar (i.e. a decrease in unmown plots), although only long-term effects were significant. Treatment effects on the above-ground biomass varied considerably, and short-term trends (lower biomass in unmown plots) differed from long-term trends (higher biomass in unmown plots). Our sites showed little overall change in species composition during the period investigated, and treatment effects were low compared with other similar experiments. If study sites are less stable or treatment effects more drastic, a short-term evaluation is expected to be even less reliable. Knowledge on species dynamics at a site may help to choose the adequate spatial and temporal scale of investigation, and thus increase the efficiency of management experiments.  相似文献

Question: What are the changes associated with the recent invasion by the non‐native legume, Cytisus scoparius? Location: Subalpine vegetation (1500 m a.s.l.) in Australia. Methods: We used multivariate techniques and regression analyses to assess vegetation and environmental changes across six study sites. Vegetation and environmental variables were investigated at three different stages of invasion: (1) recent invasion (8–10 yr), (2) mature invasion (15–16 yr) and (3) long‐term invasion (25 yr). Results: Substantial changes in floristic composition and species richness were evident after 15 yr and these changes became more pronounced after 25 yr. Changes due to invasion were associated with a dramatic loss of native species or a reduction in their abundance. No ‘new species’ were evident under invaded stands. Forbs were most affected by the establishment of C. scoparius, although all growth forms responded negatively. Dense canopy shading and an increasingly dense, homogeneous litter layer in the understorey as a result of C. scoparius were strong environmental drivers of vegetation change. Greenhouse studies confirmed the importance of these processes on the germination and growth of two native species. Conclusions: This study highlights the potential for C. scoparius to alter both vegetation and environmental processes in the subalpine region.  相似文献

The landscapes of the French island of Corsica are the result of thegrazing tradition which has always occupied a pivotal position in the island'seconomy. Furthermore, in the last fifty years, a reduction in the pressure fromhuman activity has lead to changes in plant cover. This article intends tostudythe evolution of dynamic mechanisms during the secondary successions and theeffect of changes in vegetation on plant diversity. Our study was based on asimultaneous study of 375 plots carried out between May and September from 1996to 1998. We studied the floristic composition of each stage both qualitatively(life form, adaptive strategy and seed dispersal mode) and quantitatively(species richness, equitability, Shannon index). The results show a change inspecies and environmental conditions, with a progressive move from heliophilicgrassland and low shrub species with an S or SR strategy, anemochoric and withahigh tolerance for soil quality to a final stage of dense forest composed ofcompetitive (C or CS) zoochoric or barochoric phanerophytes. Moreover, theturning point in Corsica in terms of floristic diversity lies between 20 and 55years after land abandonment. Successions are due to a series of rapidinteractions. Thus, when a site is given reserve or protected area status, weneed to take into account the fact that it will evolve according to thebiological traits of the species. From a research point of view, we need tolookat process diversity and the role of each of the species present during thesuccessions.  相似文献

Questions: 1. Which habitats have the highest degree of invasion? 2. Do native species-rich communities have also a high degree of invasion? 3. Do the patterns of association between native and alien species richness vary between habitats. Location: Catalonia region (NE Spain). Methods: We conducted a large regional analysis of 15655 phytosociological relevés to detect differences in the degree of invasion between European Nature Information System (EUNIS) habitats representative of temperate and Mediterranean European areas. Results: Alien species were present in less than 17 % of the relevés and represented less than 2% of the total number of species per habitat. The EUNIS habitats with the highest alien species richness were arable land and gardens followed by anthropogenic forb-rich habitats, riverine and lakeshore scrubs, southern riparian galleries and thickets and trampled areas. In contrast, the following habitats had never any alien species: surface running waters, raised and blanket bogs, valley mires, poor fens and transition mires, base-rich fens, alpine and sub-alpine grasslands, sub-alpine moist or wet tall-herb and fern habitats, alpine and sub-alpine scrub habitats and spiny Mediterranean heaths. There was a unimodal relationship between the mean native and mean alien species richness per EUNIS habitat with a high number of aliens in habitats with intermediate number of native species and a low number of aliens at both extremes of the native species gradient. Within EUNIS habitats, the relationship was positive, negative or non-significant depending on the habitat type without any clear pattern related to the number of native species. Alien species richness was not related to plot size, neither between habitats nor within habitats. Conclusions: The analysis emphasised that the habitats with a higher degree of invasion were the most disturbed ones and that in general habitats rich in native species did not harbour less invaders than habitats poor in native species.  相似文献

Abundance and diversity of small mammals are usually affected strongly by grazing either due to decreased food availability or quality, decreased suitability of soil for building burrow systems due to trampling and/or due to increased predation risk in the structurally simpler grazed areas. We estimated the effects of grazing-induced changes in vegetation and soil and of increased predation on small mammals in a Mediterranean grassland landscape. We measured vegetation structure, soil compaction and small mammal abundance and species composition in 22 plots of 8 Sherman live traps each, arranged according to an unbalanced two-way ANOVA design with two grazing levels (grazed areas and cattle exclosures) and two predator abundance levels (increased densities of Eurasian kestrels Falco tinnunculus by means of nest boxes and control). Plots were sampled during 2 consecutive years in early summer and early fall. Exclosure from cattle increased significantly vegetation height and volume and decreased soil compaction. Grazing-induced changes in vegetation height and volume and in soil compaction produced strong effects on small mammal abundance and species richness. Increased kestrel densities did not have significant additive or interactive effects, with the effects of grazing-induced vegetation and soil gradients on abundance or richness of small mammals. Our results suggest that the effects of grazing on small mammal communities in Mediterranean montane grasslands were mainly due to reduced food availability and by negative effects of trampling on the suitability of soils for building burrow systems. Decreased food quality and increased predation in grazed areas seemed to play a minor role, if any. Reductions in stock densities would then favor generalist predator populations in Mediterranean grasslands through the expected positive effects of such reductions on the availability of food and burrows for small mammals.  相似文献

We investigated the influence of management and micro-scale landform on the species composition and richness of ground flora in secondary woodlands and their verges next to paddy fields in the Tama Hills, Tokyo, Japan. Sites representing various micro-scale landforms and different management regimes were sampled. The results of Detrended Correspondence Analysis and Indicator Species Analysis showed that there was no significant difference between management regimes on species composition in head hollow sites. However, species composition was unique in other landform types having the same management regimes. Micro-scale landform units had less effect on species composition than management regime on crest slopes and side slopes of secondary woodlands. A large variation in species composition of verges, all on the lowermost side slopes, was found within sites, but the composition was different when compared with other sites. We recognized five habitat types associated with species composition that resulted from the combined effects of landform and management regimes. Among habitat types, the verges and the well-managed woodlands had high species richness. Management practices within woodlands have enhanced the species richness on crest slopes and side slopes. High beta diversity of ground flora could be due to the variation in micro-scale landform along soil moisture regimes. Intensive management involving clear-cutting on the lower side slopes (an ecotone of mesic and wet environments) accompanied by paddy cultivation on valley bottoms enhanced the diversity of herbaceous vegetation in the verges.  相似文献

Questions: (1) Does a fertilized grassland recover in terms of species composition and species richness after stopping the treatment? (2) Which species contributed most to the changes? (3) Is it realistic to rely upon spontaneous recovery in this and similar cases? Location: A large grassland, located in the western part of the Czech Republic in central Europe, latitude 49° 59′, longitude 12° 45′, altitude 750 m a.s.l. Methods: Experimental plots of 2.5 m × 6.0 m were established in the central part of the grassland in 1968 using a randomized block design with the following variants: unfertilized controls, 80, 160, 240 and 320 kg ha?1 of nitrogen, in four or eight (320 kg) replicates. The fertilization regime was stopped in 1989. Phytosociological relevés of 2 m × 4 m in size were made in 1990, 1994, 1996, 1997, 1999, 2003 and 2006. The data were processed by multivariate ordination methods (DCA, CCA). Differences in the number of species per plot were tested by repeated measures anova and Tukey's HSD test. Results: All plots, including controls, exhibited a distinct trajectory through time, reflecting the rates of fertilizer used and generally changing in the same direction. Both time and nutrients significantly influenced the vegetation pattern. Treatments differed significantly in species richness, especially at the beginning of the observation. Differences in later years were less pronounced, thus a convergence between the treatments was evident. Conclusions: During the 16 years after fertilization ceased, the number of species substantially increased not only in the fertilized plots but also in the controls. Species typical of semi‐natural grasslands predominantly contributed to the increase. Spontaneous recovery after cessation of fertilizing was relatively efficient, but the fertilized plots were small in size and thus rather easily colonized from outside. For interpretation and extrapolation of results from small experimental plots, it is necessary to consider changes in the broader surroundings.  相似文献
