Lead was ubiquitous on Caribbean sugar plantations, where it was used extensively in the production of sugar and rum. Previous studies suggest that skeletal lead contents can be used to identify African‐born individuals (as opposed to Creoles) among slave burials found in the New World. To test this hypothesis, we measured lead concentrations in enamel samples from 26 individuals from the Newton Plantation cemetery in Barbados, which was in use from around 1660 to 1820, and compared the results with enamel 87Sr/86Sr measurements that had been previously obtained for the same population. Results show a clear association between low (i.e., below 1 ppm) enamel lead concentrations and higher enamel 87Sr/86Sr ratios which have previously been interpreted as being indicative of African birth, suggesting that individuals with low enamel lead levels were indeed born in Africa as opposed to the New World. Based on these results, we propose that enamel lead measurements provide an effective and inexpensive way to determine African birth from skeletal remains. Furthermore, the lead measurements can provide useful insights into the health status and childhood environment of enslaved Africans during the colonial period. Using data on individuals aged between 50 and 65 from 6 European countries, this study investigates the effect of absolute income and subjective social status assessment on health in the light of medical evidence indicating that the individual's position in the social hierarchy undermines his/her mental and physical health. The paper shows that individuals’ own income has a positive, but modest effect on health. Importantly, subjective social status assessment has a significant effect on all health measurements. Finally, the results show that individuals from deprived families (when at the age of 14) have poorer physical and mental health.  相似文献

区域生态系统健康评价是获取区域生态系统状况的重要手段,对生态保护和恢复具有现实的指导意义。研究从人类与生态系统耦合角度出发,基于生态系统完整性以及人类对生态系统服务的需求,在“活力-组织力-弹性”框架基础上引入生态系统服务供需指标构建评价框架。以粤港澳大湾区为例,分析2005—2018年生态系统健康时空变化特征及其对城镇化的响应。研究结果表明:(1)2005—2018年间,大湾区生态系统健康呈现中部低四周高的空间格局,以好,较好和一般水平为主;从时间变化上来看,大湾区四周山区生态系统健康状况有所改善,而中部地区健康状况则逐渐恶化。(2)大湾区生态系统活力在改善区域生态系统健康中发挥了重要的作用;此外,生态系统服务供需对传统生态系统健康评价结果进行适当修正,生态系统服务供需赤字加剧了中部地区生态系统健康状况的恶化。(3)大湾区生态系统健康与人口城镇化、土地城镇化间均存在显著的空间负相关性,其中,土地城镇化对生态系统健康的负面影响越来越显著,特别是大湾区中部地区。研究以期为生态系统健康评价提供新思路,同时为大湾区生态系统保护与管理提供参考。  相似文献

Objectives: The aim of the present study was to identify the onset predictors of a change in chewing ability over a 3‐year period in the frail elderly. Methods: The subjects were frail elderly people living in southern Japan. Data were collected at baseline (n = 92) and 3 years later (n = 60). The dependent variable was a change in self‐rated chewing ability. The independent variables were age, gender, number of present teeth, dentition, maximum bite force (evaluated using a pressure‐sensitive foil), basic activities of daily living, self‐rated general health status, higher level of competence (evaluated using Tokyo Metropolitan Institute of Gerontology index), cognitive status (evaluated by revised Hasegawa Dementia Rating scale), and quality of life (evaluated using Philadelphia Geriatric Center morale scale) at baseline. To identify the most reliable predictors, bivariate analysis and multiple logistic regression analysis were performed, with the change of chewing ability as the dependent variable. Results: Bivariate analysis showed the change in chewing ability was significantly associated with general health status (p < 0.01), number of present teeth (p < 0.05) and maximum bite force (p < 0.01). Backward logistic regression analysis revealed that the most reliable predictor of a change in chewing ability at 3 years was general health status (odds ratio = 6.35, 95% CI = 1.69–23.88). Conclusion: The present findings suggest that general health status at baseline produces a change in chewing ability.  相似文献

In recent years, policy makers in high-income countries have placed an increasing emphasis on the value of maintaining good mental health, recognizing the contribution that this makes to quality of life, whilst ever more mindful of the socio-economic consequences of poor mental health. The picture in many other parts of the world is much less encouraging; policy attention and resources are still directed largely at communicable diseases. We reflect on some of the challenges faced in these countries and outline the role that economic evidence could play in strengthening the policy case for investment in mental health. Clearly this should include assessment of the economic impact of strategies implemented outside, as well as within the health sector. The ways in which mental health services are delivered is also of critical importance. Non-governmental organizations (NGOs) have long been shown to be key stakeholders in the funding, coordination and delivery of these services in high-income countries. Their role in low- and middle-income countries, where infrastructure and policy focus on mental health are more limited, can be even more vital in overcoming some of the barriers to the development of mental health policy and practice.  相似文献

During 2000–2002, diagnostic rice and soybean plant samples and concurrent soil samples were collected from cultivated fields within a geo-physically unique Zn/Cd co-contaminated location in Thailand. For the fields sampled, aqua regia-digested Zn and Cd concentrations ranged from 2.91–284 and 254–8036 mg kg–1, respectively. In comparison, rice and soybean Cd concentrations ranged from 0.02–5.00 and 1.08–1.71 mg kg–1, respectively. Further, the results indicate that grain Cd, Zn and Fe concentrations are in the order riceGr=soybeanGr, soybeanGr>riceGr, soybeanGr>riceGr, respectively. However, and critically from a human health perspective, Cd:Zn and Cd:Fe ratios are in the order riceGr>soybeanGr. In addition, the riceGr Cd:Fe ratio is an order of magnitude higher than that determined for soybeanGr. The results of this study, clearly demonstrate that compared to rice stalk (riceSt) and rice leaf (riceL), riceGr accumulates comparatively higher Cd than Zn and Fe thus resulting in the high riceGr Cd:Zn and Cd:Fe ratios. A method for modeling the relationship of polychotomous health ratings with predictors such as area characteristics, the distance to a source of environmental contamination, or exposure to environmental pollutants is presented. The model combines elements of grouped regression and multilevel analysis. The statistical model describes the entire response distribution as a function of the predictors so that any measure that summarizes this distribution can be calculated from the model. With the model, polychotomous health ratings can be used, and there is no need for a priori dichotomizing such variables which would lead to loss of information. It is described how, according to the model, various measures describing the response distribution are related to the exposure, and the confidence and tolerance intervals for these relationships are presented. Specific attention is given to the incorporation of random factors in the model. The application that here serves as an example, concerns annoyance from transportation noise. Exposure-response relationships obtained with the described method of modeling are presented for aircraft, road traffic, and railway noise.  相似文献

Abstract

Over the last fifty years the nature of the provision and financing of health services, and the composition of the foreign-born population in the USA have both evolved significantly. The rapid growth of Mexican immigration in the last fifteen years has created new challenges. Ironically, the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010, the sweeping legislation designed to ensure that almost all Americans can obtain health insurance, may reduce access to care for many immigrants by isolating them from the general, formerly uninsured, population. Bi-national and cross-border initiatives between the USA and Mexico along the lines of some developments in Europe are worth encouraging to help ease the current and future barriers to health care for immigrants.  相似文献

Despite different geological features the Nordic countries are generally selenium-poor areas. In each country various factors such as food importation and life-style determine the selenium (Se) intake. Due to an extremely low Se intake in the 1970s in Finland, 0.025 mg/day, an official decision was made in 1984 to supplement multinutrient fertilizers with Se in the chemical form of sodium selenate. Almost all fertilizers used in Finland since 1985 have contained Se. Currently all crop fertilizers contain 15 mg Se/kg. Finland is still the only country to take this country-wide measure.In a national monitoring programme, sampling of cereals, basic foodstuffs, feeds, fertilizers, soils, and human tissues has been carried out annually since 1985 by four governmental research organizations. Sampling of foods has been done four times per year and human blood has been obtained annually from the same (n = 60) adults. The accuracy of analyses has been verified by annual interlaboratory quality control. During this programme the selenium concentration of spring cereals has increased on average 15-fold compared with the level before the Se fertilization. The mean increase in the Se concentration in beef, pork and milk was 6-, 2- and 3-fold. In terms of Se, organically grown foods of plant origin are generally comparable to products produced before the Se supplementation of fertilizers. Milk from organically fed cows is 50% lower in Se than the usual milk. The average dietary human intake increased from 0.04 mg Se/day/10 MJ in 1985 to a present plateau of 0.08 mg Se/day/10 MJ, which is well above the current nutrition recommendations. Foods of animal origin contribute over 70% of the total daily Se intake. The mean human plasma Se concentration increased from 0.89 μmol/L to a general level of 1.40 μmol/L that can be considered to be an optimal status. The absence of Se deficiency diseases and a reference population have made conclusions on the impact on human health difficult. However, the rates of cardiovascular diseases and cancers have remained similar during the pre- and post-supplementation indicating medical and life-style factors to be much stronger determinants than Se. The nationwide supplementation of fertilizers with sodium selenate is shown to be effective and safe in increasing the Se intake of the whole population. The prehallux is a sesamoid bone occurring in the region of the hallucial tarso-metatarsal joint in a number of metatherian and eutherian orders and in some nonmammalian tetrapods. Within the order Primates, it occurs invariably in ceboids and Hylobates, with extreme infrequency in pongids and Homo, and is absent in other primates groups. It has been suggested that, first, the prehallux is homologous both within and across the infraclasses Metatheria and Eutheria; second, it has functional significance in that it contributes to joint stability and is an adaptation to arboreality; third, its presence results in diagnostic features on the entocuneiform and hallucial metatarsal, so that original presence or absence can be unambiguously assessed in instances when the bone itself is not preserved; and fourth, because of presumed homology, it may be employed in the reconstruction of phylogenetic relationships. The present study concludes that the homologous nature of the bone is open to reasonable doubt, the assumption of homology does not yield significantly more parsimonious phylogeny reconstructions than does the assumption of analogy, there are no invariant diagnostic features associated with its presence, and functional explanations currently offered are of questionable validity. Thus, the prehallux is at present of little utility in either establishing or precluding phylogenetic relationships among primates.  相似文献

RNA viruses successfully adapt to various environments by repeatedly producing new mutants, often through generating a number of nucleotide substitutions. To estimate the degree of variation in mutation rates of RNA viruses and to understand the source of such variation, we studied the synonymous substitution rate because synonymous substitution is exempt from functional constraints at the protein level, and its rate reflects the mutation rate to a great extent. We estimated the synonymous substitution rates for a total of 49 different species of RNA viruses, and we found that the rates had tremendous variation by 5 orders of magnitude (from 1.3 x 10(-7) to 6.2 x 10(-2) /synonymous site/year). Comparing the synonymous substitution rates with the replication frequencies and replication error rates for the RNA viruses, we found that the main source of the rate variation was differences in the replication frequency because the rates of replication error were roughly constant over different RNA viruses. Moreover, we examined a relationship between viral life strategies and synonymous substitution rates to understand which viral life strategies affect replication frequencies. The results show that the variation of synonymous substitution rates has been influenced most by either the difference in the infection modes or the differences in the transmission modes. In conclusion, the variation of mutation rates for RNA viruses is caused by different replication frequencies, which are affected strongly by the infection and transmission modes.  相似文献

Mitochondrial DNAs (mtDNAs) of 54 Tibetans residing at altitudes ranging from 3,000–4,500 m were amplified by polymerase chain reaction (PCR), examined by high-resolution restriction endonuclease analysis, and compared with those previously described in 10 other Asian and Siberian populations. This comparison revealed that more than 50% of Asian mtDNAs belong to a unique mtDNA lineage which is found only among Mongoloids, suggesting that this lineage most likely originated in Asia at an early stage of the human colonization of that continent. Within the Tibetan mtDNAs, sets of additional linked polymorphic sites defined seven minor lineages of related mtDNA haplotypes (haplogroups). The frequency and distribution of these haplogroups in modern Asian populations are supportive of previous genetic evidence that Tibetans, although located in southern Asia, share common ancestral origins with northern Mongoloid populations. This analysis of Tibetan mtDNAs also suggests that mtDNA mutations are unlikely to play a major role in the adaptation of Tibetans to high altitudes. © 1994 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

The narrow‐ridged finless porpoise, Neophocaena asiaeorientalis, is a small cetacean inhabiting the coastal waters of Taiwan, East China, Korea, and Japan, and is threatened by anthropogenic pressures. We analyzed the mitochondrial control region of N. asiaeorientalis from Korean waters to better understand the genetic diversity, population structure, and demographic history through comparison with previously reported sequences from Japan and China. The network and phylogenetic analyses illustrated that few common haplotypes were centrally located, and that most of the unique haplotypes were on the edges of the branches. Moreover, the estimates of fixation indices and gene flow revealed significant genetic differentiation among the regions in East Asia. The mismatch distribution suggested a population expansion in the late Pleistocene. We propose that the current genetic variation in N. asiaeorientalis in East Asia was shaped by historical demographic expansion during the late Pleistocene. The N. asiaeorientalis of Korean waters has the highest diversity observed with the sampling available at this time. However, the abundance of N. asiaeorientalis in Korean waters has rapidly declined and the species needs protection from bycatch.  相似文献

There is little doubt regarding the essential nature of alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), yet the capacity of dietary ALA to maintain adequate tissue levels of long chain n−3 fatty acids remains quite controversial. This simple point remains highly debated despite evidence that removal of dietary ALA promotes n−3 fatty acid inadequacy, including that of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), and that many experiments demonstrate that dietary inclusion of ALA raises n−3 tissue fatty acid content, including DHA. Herein we propose, based upon our previous work and that of others, that ALA is elongated and desaturated in a tissue-dependent manner. One important concept is to recognize that ALA, like many other fatty acids, rapidly undergoes β-oxidation and that the carbons are conserved and reused for synthesis of other products including cholesterol and fatty acids. This process and the differences between utilization of dietary DHA or liver-derived DHA as compared to ALA have led to the dogma that ALA is not a useful fatty acid for maintaining tissue long chain n−3 fatty acids, including DHA. Herein, we propose that indeed dietary ALA is a crucial dietary source of n−3 fatty acids and its dietary inclusion is critical for maintaining tissue long chain n−3 levels.  相似文献
