Summary Twenty-seven species of water mites of the genus Arrenurus were compared with respect to allocation of reproductive effort. Clutch volume was positively correlated to female volume, female volume was positively correlated with clutch size and with larval volume, while clutch size and larval volume were negatively correlated. In threespace, corresponding to female volume, clutch size and larval volume, species were arranged along two trajectories representing separate reproductive strategies. The strategy characterized by small larvae, large clutches and large females corresponded to species of the subgenus Arrenurus, known to be larval parasites of adult Odonata. Members of three subgenera, known to be larval parasites of adult Diptera, followed the second strategy of small clutch size and alrge larvae. Of nine species of mites tested for intraspecific relationships, only one significant relationship was found, between female volume and clutch size for A. (Megaluracarus) bartonensis.  相似文献

Abstract

Across 88 sites 9 species were found, with Anaplectus granulosus at 56 sites, Plectus parietinus at 47, P. longicaudatus at 30, P. parvus at 15, P. cirratus and Wilsonema otophorum at 11, P. armatus and A. porosus at 4, and Tylocephalus auriculatus at 1 site. A key to Anaplectus males is given. For nine sites mean length of female A. granulosus is negatively correlated with mean annual air temperature. The most diverse fauna comprised six species in Kaitoke silt loam; it appears that faunal diversity increases with higher rainfall. Species apparently coexist through separation in size and time. Tylocephalus was only found in soils with a thermic soil temperature regime.  相似文献

Abstract 1 Mnesampela privata (Guenée) has a host list of 40 Eucalyptus and at least one Corymbia species. Larval survival and performance was studied on 19 species to investigate how certain leaf traits influence the suitability of different species. 2 After 7 days, survival on Eucalyptus aggregata and Eucalyptus camphora is greater than 70% even though the toughness of leaves is 0.15–0.19 mg/mm2. However, after the same time, survival on genotypes of Eucalyptus melliodora and Eucalyptus sideroxylon was less than 60%, or even 0%, even though the toughness of some leaves was as low as 0.11 mg/mm2. An unmeasured allelochemical, rather than toughness, may reduce survival on these species. 3 Dry weights of first‐instar larvae were negatively correlated with leaf toughness for 13 of the species studied. Species that produced the heaviest first‐instar larvae were not the same hosts that produced the heaviest second‐instar larvae. 4 Dry weights of female pupae were negatively correlated with total oil content for five of the species studied. 5 Larvae exhibit age‐related changes in feeding behaviour. Neonates skeletonize leaves (avoid leaf veins and oil glands) and post‐third‐instar larvae ingest whole leaf fragments (consume small leaf veins and oil glands). These findings suggest that neonates are sensitive to high leaf toughness and non‐oil plant secondary metabolites whereas older larvae are less sensitive to high leaf toughness and are likely to become larger adults on hosts with lower oil contents.  相似文献

Diversity of terrestrial isopods across habitats and altitude was studied in the National Park of Chambi (central Tunisia). Samples were collected over five years in seven sites (S1–S7), within an altitudinal range from 750 to 1,500 m a.s.l. Twelve species belonging to five families were identified, with one endemic species (Porcellio djahizi) to this area, and three species were present in all sites (P. djahizi, Leptotrichus panzerii and Armadillidium tunisiense). Agnaridae represented by Hemilepistus reaumurii species was the most abundant family (58.77%) and found in only one site. Our results showed differences in species richness between sites. Indeed, S2 and S3 (900 and 1,050 m) showed the highest species richness with 11 species each. This result validates the hypothesis of mid‐elevational richness peak and contradicts the theory of large sampling regimes in determining the relationship between species richness and elevation. Terrestrial isopod species richness in the Chambi Mountain tends to decrease with altitude: 11 species in S2 and S3 to four species in S7. The highest Shannon–Wiener diversity index value was observed in S2 (H′ = 3.21 bits). Canonical correspondence analysis revealed that H. reaumurii was positively correlated with temperature whereas A. tunisiense and P. djahizi were the only species positively correlated with altitude.  相似文献

Glaucopsyche lygdamus egg densities were surveyed over a 2000-m section of Gold Creek and at 30 different isolated patches in the Gold Basin drainage in Colorado. Host plant numbers and diversity were quantified, as well as other variables potentially influencing butterfly population size, such as patch size and isolation. Egg densities correlated significantly only with measures of host species diversity. Patches consisting of a single host species, no matter how large, did not support high butterfly densities, but patches of multiple, equitably distributed host species did. The most likely explantation, in light of oviposition preference and larval performance data accumulated for this butterfly species, is that host species diversity is necessary for the persistence ofG. lygdamus populations, because alternative host species buffer population losses during poor or unusual years. The dependence of both ovipositing butterflies and developing larvae on the ephemeral, young, host plant flowers make the butterfly especially vulnerable to year-to-year variation in host plant availability and quality.  相似文献

Abstract Ecological restoration enjoys widespread use as a technique to mitigate for environmental damage. Success of a restoration project often is evaluated on the basis of plant cover only. Recovery of a native arthropod fauna is also important to achieve conservation goals. I sampled arthropod communities by pitfall trapping in undisturbed, disturbed, and restored coastal sage scrub habitats in southern California. I evaluated arthropod community composition, diversity, and abundance using summary statistics, cluster analysis, and detrended correspondence analysis (DCA) and investigated influence of vegetation on arthropod communities with multiple regression analysis. Arthropod diversity at undisturbed and disturbed sites was greater than at sites that were 5 and 15 years following restoration ( p < 0.05). Number of arthropod species was not significantly different among undisturbed, disturbed, and restored sites, and two restoration sites had significantly more individuals than other sites. Vegetation at disturbed and undisturbed sites differed significantly; older restorations did not differ significantly from undisturbed sites in diversity, percent cover, or structural complexity. In multiple regression models, arthropod species richness and diversity was negatively related to vegetation height but positively related to structural complexity at intermediate heights. Exotic arthropod species were negatively associated with overall arthropod diversity, with abundance of the earwig Forficula auricularia best predicting diversity at comparison (not restored) sites (r2 = 0.29), and abundance of the spider Dysdera crocata and the ant Linepithema humile predicting diversity at all sites combined (r2 = 0.48). Native scavengers were less abundant at restored sites than all other sites and, with a notable exception, native predators were less abundant as well. DCA of all species separated restored sites from all other sites on the first axis, which was highly correlated with arthropod diversity and exotic arthropod species abundance. Lower taxonomic levels showed similar but weaker patterns, with example families not discriminating between site histories. Vegetation characteristics did not differ significantly between the newly restored site and disturbed sites, or between mature restoration sites and undisturbed sites. In contrast, arthropod communities at all restored sites were, as a group, significantly different from both disturbed and undisturbed sites. As found in other studies of other restoration sites, arthropod communities are less diverse and have altered guild structure. If restoration is to be successful as compensatory mitigation, restoration success standards must be expanded to include arthropods.  相似文献

Microhabitat associations of adults and larvae of Stenelmis lateralis Sanderson, Optioservus sandersoni Collier (Coleoptera: Elmidae) and larvae of Psephenus herricki (DeKay) (Coleoptera: Psephenidae) were examined within riffles of an Ozark stream in Missouri. The invertebrate fauna was sampled from 150 quadrats, and each quadrat was characterized by a suite of substrate, simple hydraulic, and complex hydraulic variables. Larvae were assigned to size classes for analyses. MANOVAs were performed to determine if differences existed between sites of presence and absence for each of the three species separately. Subsequently, ANOVAs and Bonferroni sequential adjustments were performed to determine differences in each habitat variable that are related to presence or absence of each group. Multiple regression was performed to determine which habitat variables were important determinants of density for each taxon. Finally, discriminant function analyses were performed to determine the degree of overlap in microhabitat associations of each group. A clear distinction was seen between sites of occurrence and absence for P. herricki, and for larvae of each elmid species (MANOVAs). For P. herricki, current velocity and the complex hydraulic characteristics of Reynolds number and boundary Reynolds number were important in determining beetle presence. In contrast, substrate characteristics were major determinants of presence for larvae of O. sandersoni and S. lateralis. In general, the density of each of the three species was related to a different subset of abiotic variables. For each species, the most definitive microhabitat associations were seen in the early instars. Microhabitat associations for larvae of each elmid species were size class-specific. Inclusion of complex hydraulic characteristics along with substrate and simple hydraulic characteristics provided greater resolution of microhabitat associations.  相似文献

Spalgis epius is an economically important hemipterophagous butterfly. Detailed information on the population dynamics, natural enemies, and prey range of S. epius and its association with mealybug-attendant ant species is lacking. Three years of field studies conducted at Bangalore University campus, Bengaluru, India on these aspects indicated that the population density of S. epius was greatest from June to December and least from February to May in the low land region. S. epius survived on eight prey species, which were present in different months, of which Phenacoccus indicus was recorded as a prey of S. epius for the first time. Different prey species occurred on 12 species of host plants. The occurrence of S. epius was negatively correlated with temperature and positively correlated with relative humidity and prey populations. Six mealybug-attendant ant species were associated with the larvae of S. epius. The seven general predators of S. epius adults were recorded. Knowledge on the population dynamics and a prey range of S. epius and its interaction with mealybug-attendant ant species could be helpful to using this predator as a major biocontrol agent of various species of mealybugs. This study contributed to our understanding of the population dynamics of a hemipterophagous butterfly.  相似文献

Schoenus ferrugineus andS. nigricans have restricted distributions in Sweden and are almost exclusively confined to calcareous fen habitats. AtS. nigricans sites,S. ferrugineus is usually also present, and hybrids are frequently found. In this report, I used allozymes to estimate the amount of gene flow between the two species, and to compare the partitioning of genetic diversity in each of them. Thirteen loci were analysed at eight different enzyme systems. Seven loci were variable between or within the species. The two species had completely different alleles at two of the seven variable loci, whereas there was overlap at five loci. In all, 22 different alleles were found. Six of these alleles were confined toS. nigricans, and five alleles were confined toS. ferrugineus. Nei's genetic identity was 0.55.—InS. ferrugineus, three loci (23%) were polymorphic, and the average number of alleles per polymorphic locus was 2.0 (each polymorphic locus had two alleles). InS. nigricans, three loci (23%) were polymorphic, and the average number of alleles per polymorphic locus was 2.3.—The proportion of genetic diversity due to variation among sites (G ST) was fairly similar in the two species, mean over loci = 0.12 inS. ferrugineus and 0.15 inS. nigricans. However, the proportion of genetic diversity due to variation among individuals within sites (G IS) differed markedly between the two species, mean over loci = 0.54 inS. ferrugineus and 0.17 inS. nigricans. Accordingly, there was a much higher individual heterozygosity inS. nigricans than inS. ferrugineus. — Most hybrids were interpreted as F1 hybrids. However, a small proportion, 0.5–1.6 %, were Fn hybrids or back-crosses.—On the Swedish mainland, all former occurrences ofS. nigricans are extinct, but viable hybrids are still present at a few sites in southernmost Sweden.  相似文献

Two surveys were carried out in the Corrib catchment (Ireland) to determine the physical and chemical factors that govern the distribution of Corixidae. Of the twenty one species recorded, five species, Sigara scotti (Fieber), S. distincta (Fieber), S. fossarum (Leach), S. fallenoidea (Hungerford) and Cymatia bonsdorffii (Sahlberg) comprised 82% of the numerical total. Although individual species occurred in chemically diverse sites species assemblages and changes in the relative abundance of the majority of species and in species richness and diversity were evident in the progression from hard to soft water. High altitude soft water sites had a much lower number of species compared with chemically similar low altitude sites. In Lough Corrib, the main body of water in the catchment, most species were abundant only in sheltered areas with mud substrates and high percentage vegetation cover. Species diversity was high in these areas and either C. bonsdorffii, S. fossarum, S. fallenoidea or Callicorixa praeusta (Fieber) dominated numerically. However, S. scotti, S. dorsalis (Leach) and Arctocorisa germari (Fieber) were more abundant in exposed areas with sand, gravel or mearl substrates. In temporary ponds and in lotic water species diversity was also high but species composition (mainly C. praeusta, Sigara nigrolineata (Fieber), Corixa punctata (Illiger), C. panzeri (Fieber), C. bonsdorffii) was different to that of temporally stable lentic habitats.  相似文献

A study of the pre-imaginal simuliid fauna of South-East Queensland was conducted to elucidate some of the aspects of their ecology. A total of 17 species of three genera (Cnephia, Austrosimulium and Simulium) bred in the area. The highest diversity of species was found to occur in mountainous areas near the coast which had the following conditions: high rainfall, steep relief, cool temperatures, on the edge of forests with streams of the order 1–3 (using a 1 : 250,000 map).More detailed studies of A. bancrofti, S. nicholsoni and S. ornatipes were made to investigate microdistribution, colonization, drift, pupation timing and population changes. Current velocity was the most important factor determining the distribution of A. bancrofti, while the distribution of S. nicholsoni was influenced by a preference for vegetation substrate and current velocity. Late instar larvae of A. bancrofti and S. ornatipes occurred in faster currents than early instar larvae. Pupae of these two species primarily occurred on the downstream side of submerged substrates. Colonization of a particular stream was dependent on the oviposition preference of gravid females while drift, looping, or descent on silk threads was used for larval dispersal from the oviposition site. Early instars of A. bancrofti drifted from quiet reaches of mature rivers to rapids, while S. ornatipes larvae appeared to be more sessile with limited dispersal from site of egg masses. Drift occurred throughout 24 hours with little change in total numbers. Early instars of A. bancrofti however showed a definite diurnal tendency while the proportion of late instars increased at night. Pupation of S. ornatipes was diurnal under undisturbed conditions. The larvae of A. bancrofti and S. nicholsoni both developed in the Brisbane River system, however the populations of A. bancrofti peaked in late winter, a dry season with stable water conditions while S. nicholsoni larvae were most abundant from late summer, at the end of the rains to the early winter. To examine temporal changes in a bacterial community, water samples were collected monthly for one year from five sites along a major use-reuse river, the Cuyahoga River, in northeastern Ohio (USA). Fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH) was used to enumerate population sizes of two species of common bacteria, Pseudomonas putida and Acinetobacter calcoaceticus; FISH was also performed with a Domain Bacteria specific probe. In addition, the total bacteria (based on DAPI staining), colony forming units (on modified Nutrient agar) and coliforms were enumerated and supporting physical/chemical data were collected. Each variable examined exhibited a different seasonal pattern. Temporal changes in total number of bacteria and population size of P. putida were correlated with turbidity and precipitation suggesting that allochthonous sources and scouring of the benthos may be major contributors to these portions of the community. In contrast, the number of cells hybridizing the Domain Bacteria and A. calcoaceticus probes were correlated with temperature. Thus, different aspects of the bacterial community are potentially controlled by different factors and the role of allochthonous and autochthonous sources may vary among species.  相似文献

The community of elaterid larvae of three sites (field and two fallows), representing different stages of secondary succession, were studied using soil sampling from 1986 to 1993. All three sites were abandoned arable land: a field cultivated until 1991, a fallow I abandoned in 1986, and a fallow II abandoned about 1976. The fallow II was used as a meadow after abandonment and was regularly mown until 1985, when cultivation stopped. Six species of Elateridae larvae were found at all three study sites. In the field, Agriotes obscurus, Athous niger, Athous subsuscus, Dalopius marginatus and Athous vittatus were found, A. niger and A. obscurus being the most abundant species. During cultivation, larval densities were very low, however, larval abundance increased up to 8.8 ± 8.3 ind. m-2 when cultivation stopped. Only small A. obscurus larvae were found during cultivation, whereas larval size increased after abandonment. In fallow I A. obscurus, A. niger, A. subsuscus, D. marginatus, and Agrypnus murinus were found and the average annual abundance fluctuated between 0.8 ± 1.4 to 40.8 ± 10.9 ind. m-2 with A. obscurus being the most abundant species. Fallow II supported the highest densities of wireworms from all plots studied (71.2±35.2 to 280.0±24.8 ind. m-2). A. obscurus, A. niger, A. subsuscus and D. marginatus were found in fallow II. The abundance of all larval Elateridae as well as the dominant species A. obscurus decreased during the study period, while simultaneously the occurrence of small sized A. obscurus larvae decreased. The frequency of cultivation and time elapsed since last cultivation appeared to be the most important factors affecting elaterid occurrence in the field and fallow I. In fallow II, the decrease in abundance correlates with the accumulation of a dense litter layer, which may correspond with soil surface structure, plant community changes or predator pressure.  相似文献

Settlement of many benthic marine invertebrates is stimulated by bacterial biofilms, although it is not known if patterns of settlement reflect microbial communities that are specific to discrete habitats. Here, we characterized the taxonomic and functional gene diversity (16S rRNA gene amplicon and metagenomic sequencing analyses), as well as the specific bacterial abundances, in biofilms from diverse nearby and distant locations, both inshore and offshore, and tested them for their ability to induce settlement of the biofouling tubeworm Hydroides elegans, an inhabitant of bays and harbours around the world. We found that compositions of the bacterial biofilms were site specific, with the greatest differences between inshore and offshore sites. Further, biofilms were highly diverse in their taxonomic and functional compositions across inshore sites, while relatively low diversity was found at offshore sites. Hydroides elegans settled on all biofilms tested, with settlement strongly correlated with bacterial abundance. Bacterial density in biofilms was positively correlated with biofilm age. Our results suggest that the localized distribution of H. elegans is not determined by ‘selection’ to locations by specific bacteria, but it is more likely linked to the prevailing local ecology and oceanographic features that affect the development of dense biofilms and the occurrence of larvae.  相似文献

Nearly 1500 foliage samples were collected from a total of 156 plant species, distributed at 16 study sites representing a wide range of forests and woodlands in south-eastern Australia. Samples were collected in all months. Invertebrates present in samples were counted, sorted into 13 categories, and the number present (> 3 mm in length) converted into density estimates. Densities of all invertebrates combined and invertebrate diversity were also calculated. Despite high variability there were some obvious distributional patterns for most categories. Three major dichotomies affected abundance and distribution of invertebrates: these were presence or absence of flowers, whether the plant species was Eucalyptus or other, and if Eucalyptus, whether the plant species was Symphyomyrtus or Monocalyptus. The presence of flowers in foliage samples increased the abundance of most invertebrate taxa. Compared to foliage of non-Eucalyptus species, Eucalyptus foliage had more lerp-forming psyllids and miscellaneous larvae, but fewer Arachnida, Coleoptera, Psocoptera, Hemiptera (other), Thysanoptera, Diptera, and total arthropods. Foliage of Symphyomyrtus species had higher densities of most categories (and particularly lerp-forming psyllids) than that of Monocalyptus. There were seasonal variations in abundance in most invertebrate taxa, but these patterns were different for Eucalyptus and non-Eucalyptus species. For most sites abundance of all arthropods combined was lowest in winter, but this decline was not especially pronounced, and was reversed at more xeric sites. For most categories there were significant differences between study sites in abundance and for some this was related to position of sites on a moisture gradient. In general total arthropod densities were highest at intermediate and xeric sites. There were some significant differences in arthropod communities for the same plant species at different study sites. Sample height, plant height, and the ratio of these were relatively unimportant variables. Likewise, the ratio of leaf width: leaf length was not significantly correlated with abundance for any invertebrate category across 128 plant species, but mean leaf size was negatively correlated with densities of Arachnida and total invertebrates. The distributions of some invertebrate categories were inter-correlated.  相似文献

Growth response of subalpine fir (Abies lasiocarpa) to climate was studied across its local geographical and elevation range in the Olympic Mountains, Washington. A dendroecological analysis of subalpine fir across a range of elevations (1350-1850 m) and annual precipitation (125-350 cm y?1), was used to compare environmental factors affecting growth. Climate-growth relationships were explored using Pearson product-moment correlation coefficients; partial correlation analysis was used to assess relationships among site chronologies and climatic variables. Radial growth is negatively correlated with winter precipitation at high elevation and wet sites, but not at low and middle elevation dry sites. Growth is positively correlated with current growing season temperature at all sites; however, growth is negatively correlated with previous year August temperature, indicating that climate affects growth in subsequent years. Positive correlations between growth and summer precipitation during the growing season at low and middle elevation dry sites suggest that soil moisture is partially limiting to growth on these sites. If the climate of the Pacific Northwest becomes warmer and drier, then subalpine fir growth may increase at high elevation and wet sites, but may decrease at lower elevation dry sites in the Olympic Mountains. However, the growth response of subalpine fir to potentially rapid climate change will not be uniform because subalpine fir grows over a wide range of topographic features, habitats, and local climates at different geographical scales. A comparison of growth response to current growing season temperature suggests that the temperature-related growth response of subalpine fir is not adequately described by the parabolic curve used in JABOWA-based models.  相似文献

  1. Competition among closely-related specialist predators has rarely been studied, and thus the mechanism of their coexistence remains enigmatic. Interspecific competition among specialised co-occurring predators capturing termites should be high.
  2. Here we investigated various niche dimensions, namely temporal, spatial and trophic, of a couple of jumping spider species of the genus Stenaelurillus (Stenaelurillus guttiger and S. modestus) from South Africa, to find whether these two species co-exist and along which niche dimension(s) they differentiate.
  3. The two species co-occurred in two out of five study sites. Body size was not significantly different between the species. The phenology was shifted so that one species matured earlier. Circadian activity was not different, as both species were diurnal and active at similar times. Both species preyed almost exclusively on termites. The fundamental trophic niche was very similar and rather narrow. The realised trophic niche at the prey order level of both species was similar, but at the genus level it was different. In S. modestus it was narrower, as it captured mainly Odontotermes, while S. guttiger exploited a few termite species. The size of prey captured was also similar between the two species. The frequency of intraguild predation was negligible.
  4. We conclude that both Stenaelurillus species are specialised termitophagous predators. The two species can coexist across broad spatial scales due to spatial segregation on the landscape. At the sites where they co-occur, the two species specialise on different termite prey, promoting local coexistence.

Multiple species of troglomorphic, spring‐associated Stygobromus amphipods, including the endangered, narrow‐range endemic Stygobromus pecki, occupy sites in the Edwards Plateau region of North America. Given the prevalence of cryptic diversity observed in disparate subterranean, animal taxa, we evaluated geographical genetic variation and tested whether Stygobromus contained undetected biodiversity. Nominal Stygobromus taxa were treated as hypotheses and tested with mitochondrial sequence cytochrome oxidase C subunit 1, nuclear sequence (internal transcribed spacer region 1), and AFLP data. Stygobromus pecki population structure and diversity was characterized and compared with congeners. For several Stygobromus species, the nominal taxonomy conflicted with molecular genetic data and there was strong evidence of significant cryptic diversity. Whereas S. pecki genetic diversity was similar to that of congeners, mitochondrial data identified two significantly diverged but sympatric clades. AFLP data for S. pecki indicated relatively recent and ongoing gene flow in the nuclear genome. These data for S. pecki suggest either a substantial history of isolation followed by current sympatry and ongoing admixture, or a protracted period of extremely large effective population size. This study demonstrates that Edwards Plateau Stygobromus are a complex, genetically diverse group with substantially more diversity than currently recognized. © 2013 The Linnean Society of London  相似文献

The Ordos plateau is a unique ecotone and is a focal region for the campaign to reduce or reverse desertification in China. This paper explores the relationship between vegetation and environmental gradients on the Ordos plateau based on a field survey of species distribution, vegetation distribution patterns, plant community structure, ecophysiological properties, and soil water content along an environmental gradient. The vegetation on the Ordos plateau may be divided into three types from east to west: steppe (eastern part), desert steppe (middle part) and steppe desert (western part). From east to west, precipitation declines significantly (from 400 mm to 150 mm). The spatial distribution pattern of vegetation at different sites was random. The density of shrub islands decreased from east to west, and their height and diameter were negatively correlated with precipitation. From east to west, the transpiration rate increased as temperature increased. Stomatal conductance was positively correlated with percentage of sunshine hours and negatively correlated with temperature. Water-use efficiency was positively correlated with average annual precipitation but negatively correlated with increasing percentage of sunshine hours. The results suggest that for effective revegetation, highly drought-tolerant species, such as Caragana tibetica and C. stenophylla, should be used and a lower percentage of vegetation cover expected (30–40%) in the western half of the Ordos plateau. The aquatic stages of the cattle biting pest, Simulium chutteri Lewis utilize river flow in their dispersal and colonization behaviour. Peaks of drifting activity in S. chutteri larvae occurred in the early morning and late afternoon. It is deduced that female flies scatter eggs onto slow flowing waters upstream of rapids. Larvae hatch from drifting eggs and colonize substrates in slower flowing regions upstream of rapids, while later stage instars move into faster flowing regions within rapids where they complete their development. This microhabitat selection by S. chutteri leads to rapid attainment of large population sizes in suitable sections of river and reduces competition between different stage larvae. In their utilization of a variety of microhabitats the larvae of this species differ from co-existing simuliid species which restrict developmental stages to single habitats.Catastrophic drift was recorded for S. chutteri larvae and could be a mechanism to regulate population size.Drift of simuliid larvae off rapids was not related to benthic population densities in the rapids and was therefore not due to excessive production. It is concluded that larval drift off rapids is related to habitat disturbances associated with water flow fluctuations and the activity of aquatic predators and other animals.The distribution of S. chutteri in the Vaal River is restricted by oviposition requirements of the adult female. Knowledge of drift behaviour and water flow requirements of Simuliidae have been applied to manage the population size of S. chutteri in the Vaal River.  相似文献
