The evolutionary relationships of the Recent Pterioidea are inferred from a phylogenetic analysis of representatives of all pterioidean genera based on original observations of anatomy and shell morphology, and an extensive survey of bivalve literature. The well-resolved cladogram supports monophyly for the superfamily, but renders all but one family (the monotypic Pulvinitidae) polyphyletic. In addition, these results reveal a considerable level of convergence and parallelisms through the Pterioidea. The branching order of pterioid genera in the morphological analysis is largely corroborated by the sequence of their appearance in the fossil record. The palaeontological evidence provides important information on dating lineage splitting events and transitional taxa. The proposed phylogeny integrates the cladistic analysis of the Recent Pterioidea with the fossil record and suggests that the crown-group pterioideans probably originated in the Triassic from the Bakevelliidae, an extinct paraphyletic stem group from which the Ostreoidea are also ultimately derived. © 2006 The Linnean Society of London, Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2006, 148 , 253–312. 相似文献

The New Zealand freshwater mussels are taxonomically revised and compared with key Australian and South American taxa using DNA sequence data. Three living species are recognised: Echyridella menziesii, Echyridella aucklandica and Echyridella onekaka. Cucumerunio websteri websteri and Cucumerunio websteri delli, are treated as junior synonyms of Unio aucklandica, which is transferred from Cucumerunio (and Hyridella) to Echyridella. Lectotypes are designated for Unio waikarensis and Unio hochstetteri, which are illustrated together with primary type specimens of other relevant taxa. The type locality of U. aucklandica is restricted to the catchment of the Kawakawa River. 相似文献

The structure of the pallial glands in limestone and coral boring species of Lithophaga (Bivalvia: Lithophaginae) is examined and related to evolutionary trends in habitat specialization. Boring glands of all species occur in the middle mantle fold but display a progressive degree of complexity from simple epithelial to ducted sub-epithelial structures coinciding with increasing specialization of habitat from natural limestone to species specific live coral dwellers. The size of this gland is relatively reduced anteriorly and along the entire length of the mantle in live coral borers. 相似文献

Abstract. The external epithelial cilia and other surface structures of the nuculoid protobranchs Nuculana pernula and Nucula nitidosa were studied. The gill lamellae and labial palps are partly covered with very long cilia. These have a modified slender distal portion, an ordinary metazoan-type basal body, a basal foot. and a single, long cross-striated rootlet. In cilia on the gills of N. nitidosa , the basal foot is thick and attaches to the next basal body directly behind. Unciliated surface areas on the gills, labial palps, and foot are covered with a dense brushborder of microvilli. We observed no specific homologies between the cilia of the protobranchs studied and the epidermal cilia of the enigmatic Xenoturbella bocki , hence the recent hypothesis of a close connection of the latter to the protobranch bivalves is questioned. 相似文献

该研究探讨了将COI序列应用于中国沿海缀锦蛤亚科贝类物种鉴定的可行性,获得了该亚科5属11种贝类51个个体的43个单倍型序列.碱幕替换饱和性分析表明,颠换未出现饱和现象,而转换在序列分化达到10%至15%时即到达饱和.单倍犁Hap33可能是由杂交引起的,排除此瞥倍型,种内个体间遗传距离在0%到2.02%之间,平均为0.46%,属内不同种个体间遗传距离在17.21%~32.24%之间,平均为24.96%,存在条形码问隙:11种缀锦蛤哑科贝类在邻接树和贝叶斯树上都独立的单系群.该研究表明,基于COI的DNA条形码技术能够将研究所涉及的约98%的缀锦蛤亚科贝类鉴定剑种的水平,因此,利用DNA条形码技术可以对缀锦蛤亚科贝类进行有效地分类鉴定. 相似文献

Bacterial Symbiont Transmission in the Wood-Boring Shipworm Bankia setacea (Bivalvia: Teredinidae) 下载免费PDF全文
The Teredinidae (shipworms) are a morphologically diverse group of marine wood-boring bivalves that are responsible each year for millions of dollars of damage to wooden structures in estuarine and marine habitats worldwide. They exist in a symbiosis with cellulolytic nitrogen-fixing bacteria that provide the host with the necessary enzymes for survival on a diet of wood cellulose. These symbiotic bacteria reside in distinct structures lining the interlamellar junctions of the gill. This study investigated the mode by which these nutritionally essential bacterial symbionts are acquired in the teredinid Bankia setacea. Through 16S ribosomal DNA (rDNA) sequencing, the symbiont residing within the B. setacea gill was phylogenetically characterized and shown to be distinct from previously described shipworm symbionts. In situ hybridization using symbiont-specific 16S rRNA-directed probes bound to bacterial ribosome targets located within the host gill coincident with the known location of the gill symbionts. These specific probes were then used as primers in a PCR-based assay which consistently detected bacterial rDNA in host gill (symbiont containing), gonad tissue, and recently spawned eggs, demonstrating the presence of symbiont cells in host ovary and offspring. These results suggest that B. setacea ensures successful inoculation of offspring through a vertical mode of symbiont transmission and thereby enables a broad distribution of larval settlement. 相似文献

The extant anomalodesmatan bivalves have always proved rather enigmatic and difficult to interpret, both in terms of their relationships to other bivalve taxa and the interrelationships of the constituent families. These difficulties stem from their diverse and often highly specialized life habits which have resulted in a wide array of disparate morphologies, and also from the fact that many are extremely rare. Classifications based on morphological characters have been dogged by fears that convergent and parallel evolution has masked phylogenetic signals. Molecular surveys of members of 12 of the 15 constituent families, using the 18S rRNA gene, have revealed that anomalodesmatans are robustly monophyletic and lie within the basal heterodonts. The Anomalodesmata should no longer be regarded as a subclass, but as a part of the Heterodonta. Here we present an enhanced analysis of 32 anomalodesmatan species (representatives of 12 families). Our results, subjected to Maximum Parsimony, Maximum Likelihood and Bayesian analyses, challenge our understanding of the internal relationships within the Anomalodesmata. In particular they indicate the need for a re-distribution of the families traditionally placed in the Thracioidea and Pandoroidea into a 'thraciid' lineage (Thraciidae + Cleidothaeridae + Myochamidae) and a 'lyonsiid' lineage (polyphyletic Lyonsiidae + Clavagellidae + Laternulidae + Pandoridae). The endolithic Clavagella and endobenthic Brechites and Penicillus form a robust clade. The hypothesis that the carnivorous septibranchs are monophyletic can, thus far, be neither supported nor rejected. Mapping critical morphological characters onto our molecular results provides evidence of multiple loss of some characters (e.g. prismato-nacreous shell microstructure and shell spicules) and also multiple gain of others (e.g. chondrophores). © 2006 The Linnean Society of London, Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2006, 148 , 395–420. 相似文献

In 1978 and 1999, seven and eight species of Mytilidae (Mollusca: Bivalvia) were analyzed using gel electrophoresis. Mean heterozygosity per individual (Hobs and Hexp) and genetic distances (Rogers' DR, Nei's DN, and others) were estimated for 21 and 24 allozyme loci. Mytilus modiolus had the highest variation among the species examined. Genetic distances were lowest for the M. trossulus-M. galloprovincialis species pair: DR = 0.147, DN = 0.078. Overall, five species of the genera Mytilus and Crenomytilus were genetically closer to each other (DR = 0.147, DN = 0.078) than to the remaining three species of this group (DR = 0.807, DN = 2.243). The relationships among the species were examined using cluster analysis and parsimony methods. The densest clusters in the dendrograms consisted of (1) M. trossulus and M. galloprovincialis and (2) M. coruscus, M. californianus, and M. grayanus. These two clusters form a larger cluster (3), which comprises all representatives of the nominal genus Mutilus and C. grayanus. The Mytilus-Crenomytilus cluster is consecutively joined by Adula falcatoides, Mytilus modiolus, and Septifer keenae. According to Nei's genetic distances DN, the time of divergence between M. trossulus and M. galloprovincialis is 0.8-1.6 Myr; between M. californianus and C. grayanus, it is approximately 9 Myr; and between M. coruscus and the latter pair, it is 13 Myr before present. Two representatives of the Mytilus ex gr. edulis complex diverged from the Mytilus-Crenomytilus group of large-size Pacific species about 20 Myr ago. These results are in good agreement with paleontological data and indicate a relatively recent origin of the Mytilus ex gr. edulis complex. Marine sediments are home to one of the richest species pools on Earth, but logistics and a dearth of taxonomic work-force hinders the knowledge of their biodiversity. We characterized α- and β-diversity of deep-sea assemblages from submarine canyons in the western Mediterranean using an environmental DNA metabarcoding. We used a new primer set targeting a short eukaryotic 18S sequence (ca. 110 bp). We applied a protocol designed to obtain extractions enriched in extracellular DNA from replicated sediment corers. With this strategy we captured information from DNA (local or deposited from the water column) that persists adsorbed to inorganic particles and buffered short-term spatial and temporal heterogeneity. We analysed replicated samples from 20 localities including 2 deep-sea canyons, 1 shallower canal, and two open slopes (depth range 100–2,250 m). We identified 1,629 MOTUs, among which the dominant groups were Metazoa (with representatives of 19 phyla), Alveolata, Stramenopiles, and Rhizaria. There was a marked small-scale heterogeneity as shown by differences in replicates within corers and within localities. The spatial variability between canyons was significant, as was the depth component in one of the canyons where it was tested. Likewise, the composition of the first layer (1 cm) of sediment was significantly different from deeper layers. We found that qualitative (presence-absence) and quantitative (relative number of reads) data showed consistent trends of differentiation between samples and geographic areas. The subset of exclusively benthic MOTUs showed similar patterns of β-diversity and community structure as the whole dataset. Separate analyses of the main metazoan phyla (in number of MOTUs) showed some differences in distribution attributable to different lifestyles. Our results highlight the differentiation that can be found even between geographically close assemblages, and sets the ground for future monitoring and conservation efforts on these bottoms of ecological and economic importance. 相似文献

This work was prompted by the need to be able to identify the invasive mussel species, Perna viridis, in tropical Australian seas using techniques that do not rely solely on morphology. DNA-based molecular methods utilizing
a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) approach were developed to distinguish unambiguously between the three species in the genus
Perna. Target regions were portions of two mitochondrial genes, cox1 and nad4, and the intergenic spacer between these that occurs in at least two Perna species. Based on interspecific sequence comparisons of the nad4 gene, a conserved primer has been designed that can act as a forward primer in PCRs for any Perna species. Four reverse primers have also been designed, based on nad4 and intergenic spacer sequences, which yield species-specific products of different lengths when paired with the conserved
forward primer. A further pair of primers has been designed that will amplify part of the cox1 gene of any Perna species, and possibly other molluscs, as a positive control to demonstrate that the PCR is working. 相似文献

Four new species and a new genus of lucinid bivalves are described from shallow and deeper waters in the Indian and West Pacific Oceans. The new genus Scabrilucina (subfamily Lucininae) includes the little-known Scabrilucina victorialis (Melvill, 1899) from the Arabian Sea and Scabrilucina vitrea (Deshayes, 1844) from the Andaman Sea as well as a new species Scabrilucina melvilli from the Torres Strait off northeastern Australia. Ferrocina brunei new species (Lucininae) was recovered from 60 m near oil drilling activities off Borneo; its anatomy confirmed the presence of symbiotic bacteria. Two unusual deeper water species of Leucosphaerinae are described, both species included in on-going molecular analyses; Gonimyrtea ferruginea from 400–650 m in the southwest Pacific and Myrtina reflexa from 200–825 m off Zanzibar and Madagascar. 相似文献

Although conchologically an etheriid mussel, M. siamensis from northeastern Thailand is, according to anatomical and larval features, an unionid. Its unique character states among the Unionidae are: relatively distant spacing of septa in all four demibranchs in both, males and females, absence of a foot in adults, and generation of subelliptical glochidial larvae. Two new species viz., Acaricalus indicus n. sp. from Fern (indet) and Neooxycenus dilleniae n. sp. from Dillenia pentagyna Roxb. (Dilleniaceae) are described from West Bengal. Four species viz., Acaphyllisa araucuriae Flechtmann (2000), Aculops pretoriensis Smith Meyer and Ueckermann (1990), Tetra tyrohylae Smith Meyer (1992) and Tetra visci Smith Meyer (1992) are recorded for the first time from India.
