As a prerequisite for models of foraging behaviour of the whelk, Morula marginalba Blainville (Muricidae), the effects of variation in density of prey on the rate of feeding of the predator were examined in field conditions for three coexisting species of prey. Densities of prey used were those at which the prey, two limpets and a barnacle, occurred naturally in the rocky intertidal habitat.Large limpets, Cellana tramoserica (Sowerby) can resist attacks by predatory gastropods by raising the mantle over the outside of the shell. These experiments showed that no C. tramoserica were killed by Morula marginalba even at very great densities and with no alternative prey present. For the small limpet Patelloida latistrigata (Angas), one of the whelk's most highly preferred prey, juveniles were eaten 1.4 times as fast as adults. Fitting the random predator equation gave greater attack coefficients and shorter handling times for juvenile than adult limpets.Sizes of both predator and prey affected rates of eating barnacles, Tesseropora rosea (Krauss), but not in a simple way. Whelks of 15-mm aperture length ate adult barnacles 4.2 times faster than did 12-mm whelks, but there was no significant difference in the rates at which the two sizes of snail ate juvenile barnacles.Rates of feeding on T. rosea and Patelloida latistrigata increased significantly with prey density. These results form a basis for including the density of prey in models of spatial dispersion of the predatory gastropod Morula marginalba.  相似文献

Maximum consumption rates were determined for two carabids, Bembidion lampros Herbst. and Pterostichus cupreus L., feeding on the cereal aphid Rhopalosiphum padi L. at different temperatures in the laboratory. Mean daily consumption increased with increasing temperature for both species, B. lampros consuming a maximum of 16 1–3 instar nymphs and 9 apterous adult aphids at 25°C. P. cupreus was particularly voracious and consumed 125 apterous adult R. padi per day at 20°C. The behaviour of both species was analysed by video filming starved beetles, maintained at different constant temperatures, in arenas sown with spring barley. The behavioural components (1) still; (2) run/walk; (3) search and (4) confrontation were identified and were common to both species. P. cupreus was more active over the temperature range tested; B. lampros was inactive under 10°C. The proportion of time spent searching, number of plants searched, and velocity increased with increasing temperature for both species. When observed in similar arenas seeded with R. padi colonies, individuals of P. cupreus significantly increased their time spent searching in arenas with increasing aphid density. Following discovery of an aphid colony, individuals climbed and searched the host plant and its nearest neighbours. Plants in aphid free arenas were rarely climbed. B. lampros was not observed climbing in either aphid free arenas or in arenas with increasing aphid densities, and did not significantly increase its time spent searching in response to increased prey density. The few B. lampros that found aphids caught them walking on the soil surface. The relative efficiences of these two carabids as predators of R. padi are discussed, and the results are compared with similar studies elsewhere with predators of Sitobion avenae on winter wheat.
Résumé Les taux maximum de consommation de R. padi L. à différentes températures ont été déterminés au laboratoire chez deux carabes, B. lampros Herbstet P. cupreus L. La consommation moyenne a augmenté avec la température chez les deux espèces, B. lampros consommant un maximum de 15,9 larves des stades 1 à 3 et 9,1 pucerons adultes aptères, à 25°C. P. cupreus a été particulièrement vorace et a consommé 125,3 adultes aptères par jour à 20°C. Le comportement des deux espèces a été observé en filmant en vidéo des carabes à jeun, maintenus à différentes températures constantes, dans des enceintes semées en orge de printemps. Des éléments du comportement, communs aux deux espèces, ont été définis: 1) immabilité, 2) marche et course, 3) recherche, 4) affrontement. P. cupreus a été plus actif à toutes les températures, B. lamprosa été inactif au-dessous de 10°C. La part de temps consacrée à la recherche, le nombre de plantes prospectées, et la vitesse ont augmenté avec la température chez les deux espèces. Dans des enceintes similaires colonisées par R. padi, P. cupreus a significativement augmenté le temps consacré à la recherche dans les enceintes, parallèlement à l'augmentation de la densité des pucerons. Après la découverte d'une colonie de pucerons, P. cupreus escalade et prospecte la plante et ses voisines immédiates; tandis que les plantes des enceintes sans pucerons sont rarement escaladées. B. lampros n'a pas été observé escaladant des plantes d'enceintes avec ou sans pucerons, et il n'a pas accru son temps de prospection en fonction de la densité de pucerons. Les quelques B. lampros qui ont capturé des pucerons l'ont fait lorsque ceux-ci marchaient sur la surface du sol. La discussion a porté sur l'efficacité relative des deux carabes comme prédateurs de R. padi, et les résultats ont été comparés à ceux d'études du même type, menées ailleurs, avec des prédateurs de Sitobion avenae sur blé d'hiver.

Growth and survival of 16-and 18-day-old American larvae ( Alosa sapidissima ) increased with prey density (0, 500, and 1000 Artemia l−1), though differences were not always significant. Significant differences were not observed in growth parameters and survival for larvae fed 500 v . 1000 Artemia 1−1 in laboratory experiments. Food deprivation for as little as 2 days had significant effects on survival but growth effects were not detectable until 4 days of starvation. These findings have application to the Susquehanna River where c . 11 million 2.5-week-old shad larvae are released annually as part of a basin wide effort to restore the species. Larvae released at upriver sites where food may be limiting would drift for 2–3 days to reach reservoirs with higher prey densities. Based on these laboratory findings, survival of shad may be reduced significantly if larvae do not feed prior to reaching reservoir environments.  相似文献

Annual home-range size indices for 36 male and 52 female adult brown bears Ursus arctos in two study areas in central and northern Scandinavia were estimated to evaluate factors believed to influence home-range size. Male home ranges were larger than home ranges of lone females after controlling for the sexual size dimorphism acting on metabolic needs. Further, home ranges of females with cubs were smaller than home ranges of lone females and females with yearlings. Thus, differences in metabolic need were not able to explain the variation in range size among females of different reproductive categories or between males and females, suggesting roaming behaviour of males in this promiscuous species. Home-range size in both males and females was inversely related to population density along a density gradient that was not linked to food availability. This contradicts the hypothesis that females use the minimum areas that sustain their energy requirements. However, on a large geographical scale a negative relationship between range size and food availability was evident. The annual home ranges in inland boreal environments in Scandinavia are the largest reported for brown bears in Eurasia, and similar to those in inland boreal and montane environments in North America.  相似文献

We studied lion demography in the Maasai Mara National Reserve between September 1990 and April 1992, with a special emphasis on the spatial and seasonal variation in demographic characteristics. Lion density (0.2–0.4 lions km?2) and pride size (range 8–48) were high because of a high resident prey biomass (10 335 kg km?2) augmented by migrant prey to 26 092 kg km?2 in the dry season. Overall, their sex ratio was almost at parity and varied neither spatially nor seasonally. Sex ratio was even among subadults but skewed toward males and females among cubs and adults, respectively. This implies an increasing differential mortality of males with age through subadulthood. The age ratio varied seasonally because of a birth peak in March–June and an influx of subadults into the reserve during July–August, coincident with increases in migrant prey. The birth peak was apparently preceded by another peak in mating activity falling between November and May. Further research should investigate the precise causes of the biased cub sex ratio, low lion density in the Mara Triangle and the higher ratio of subadults in Musiara than in the Mara Triangle or Sekenani.  相似文献

Decisions regarding foraging patch residence time and the assessmentof patch quality may be mediated by various sources of information.This study examined the use of sensory cues by hunting spidersto assess prey density in the absence of prey capture. Adultfemale wolf spiders [Schizocosa ocreata (Hentz); Lycosidae]had food withheld for 4 days and then were exposed to artificialforaging patches containing four densities of crickets (0, 3,10, 20) with different sensory stimuli (visual and vibratoryinformation, visual only, and vibratory only). The spiders werenot allowed to feed during trials, and patch residence timewas recorded. The spiders varied patch residence time basedon sensory cues alone and spent more time in patches with higherprey density. With visual information only, spiders could apparentlydistinguish among prey densities almost as well as with visualand vibratory cues combined, but residence time did not differamong prey densities when only vibratory information was presented.Measurements of vibration levels produced by cricket activityunder experimental sensory treatments conform to test results,suggesting that visual detection of crickets is important inpatch assessment used in determining patch residence time.  相似文献

1. The level of antipredator defence should be proportional to the actual attack probability to minimize the cost of defence and maximize the net benefit.
2. The hypothesis that the induced antipredator morphology of Euplotes octocarinatus is a graded response to the actual risk of predation by Stylonychia mytilus was tested by manipulating the density of both prey and predator populations.
3. The magnitude of the response was graded according to both predator and prey density. A dense prey population may be protective since a prey is more exposed to a predator's attack as a solitary individual.
4. The results suggest that Euplotes is able to 'estimate' the real risk of predation and respond appropriately, without mobilizing more resources than needed.
5. Separation of the prey and predator with a nylon net revealed that the response was not induced by a water-transmitted factor but that direct cell-to-cell contacts were important. This finding departs from those of other studies.  相似文献

Summary Locomotor activity of the river lamprey, Lampetra japonica, was investigated under a light-dark (LD 1212) cycle and under continuous dark conditions. Intact lampreys were entrained to the light:dark cycle. They were active mainly in the early half of the dark period and inactive in light period. The light:dark entrainment continued in 72.7% of lampreys after the removal of bilateral eyes, but additional pinealectomy made the entrainment disappear in all lampreys. When lampreys were pinealectomized with their eyes intact, light: dark entrainment was abolished in most cases. The results indicate that the pineal organ of the lamprey is a photoreceptive organ responsible for synchronizing locomotor activity to LD cycle. Under continuous dark conditions, the locomotor activity began to free-run with a period of 21.3 ± 0.9 h (mean ± SD, n = 53). This circadian rhythmicity was not affected by the removal of lateral eyes but was abolished by pinealectomy. The sex ratios of two phytoseiid mites, Phytoseiulus persimilis and Amblyseius womersleyi, were observed under various prey conditions. Upon consumption of abundant prey, both phytoseiids produced progeny in a female-biased sex ratio (approximately 0.8 females). When few prey were consumed, the sex ratio was lowered to 0.5 (the unbiased sex ratio). Under the conditions in which the unbiased sex ratio was observed, male and female progeny appeared in an alternating sequence. To determine the change in the sex ratio and the sequence of progeny, the size of eggs deposited by females under various prey conditions was first compared. Survivorship and developmental rate of progeny (immatures) hatched under ample and poor prey conditions were also examined. The eggs deposited under poor prey conditions were smaller than those deposited under ample prey conditions. This is an indication that the phytoseiid females did not invest extra energy into the eggs to secure survival of their progeny under poor prey conditions. The male and female progeny from the small eggs developed slowly, probably due to the small egg size. However, hatchability of the small eggs and survival of the immatures were the same as those of the normal eggs when the immatures were reared under ample prey conditions. The immature survivorship was little affected by the prey consumption rate of their mothers when the immatures were reared under poor prey conditions. The objectives of this work were (1) to assess the influence of zooplankton biomass on activity and consumption rates of young-of-the-year brook trout ( Salvelinus fontinalis ) and (2) to validate an in situ enclosure approach to quantify energy allocation patterns in fish. These objectives were attained by directly estimating fish growth, consumption and activity rates on 10 occasions characterized by different levels of zooplankton biomass (0.005 to 0.100 mg dry weight 1−1). One enclosure was used to estimate growth and activity rates and five additional enclosures were used to estimate consumption rates. Among-experiment variations of activity rates (sum for five trout = 2.4 to 33.5 calories day−1) were proportionally more important than variations of consumption rates (sum for five trout = 59.5 to 112.7 calories day−1). The results support the existence of a significant positive relationship between fish activity rates and zooplankton biomass. No significant relationship was found between consumption rates and prey biomass. Final size of fish inside the enclosure was within 7.6% of the value estimated using experimentally derived activity and consumption rates. This situation, together with the stability of among-enclosure activity and feeding schedules, suggested that the experimental design was appropriate to estimate fish energy allocation patterns. Combination of our observations with those of a previously published work indicated that small variations of fish size or zooplankton biomass can cause a two-fold variation of fish activity costs.  相似文献

This work presents a predator-prey Lotka-Volterra model in a two patch environment. The model is a set of four ordinary differential equations that govern the prey and predator population densities on each patch. Predators disperse with constant migration rates, while prey dispersal is predator density-dependent. When the predator density is large, the dispersal of prey is more likely to occur. We assume that prey and predator dispersal is faster than the local predator-prey interaction on each patch. Thus, we take advantage of two time scales in order to reduce the complete model to a system of two equations governing the total prey and predator densities. The stability analysis of the aggregated model shows that a unique strictly positive equilibrium exists. This equilibrium may be stable or unstable. A Hopf bifurcation may occur, leading the equilibrium to be a centre. If the two patches are similar, the predator density dependent dispersal of prey has a stabilizing effect on the predator-prey system.  相似文献

We investigated the effect of 'prey' density on frequency-dependent selection by human 'predators'. Eighty subjects were presented with computer-generated populations of two cryptically coloured characters on the screen of a colour monitor. Each subject was given the prey at a single combination of one of two frequencies and one of five densities, and was instructed to delete the prey as fast as possible with a light-pen. The results suggested that the degree of selection was inversely proportional to prey density, but there was no evidence that any frequency-dependent component of selection was affected.  相似文献

The istiophorid family of billfishes is characterized by an extended rostrum or ‘bill’. While various functions (e.g. foraging and hydrodynamic benefits) have been proposed for this structure, until now no study has directly investigated the mechanisms by which billfishes use their rostrum to feed on prey. Here, we present the first unequivocal evidence of how the bill is used by Atlantic sailfish (Istiophorus albicans) to attack schooling sardines in the open ocean. Using high-speed video-analysis, we show that (i) sailfish manage to insert their bill into sardine schools without eliciting an evasive response and (ii) subsequently use their bill to either tap on individual prey targets or to slash through the school with powerful lateral motions characterized by one of the highest accelerations ever recorded in an aquatic vertebrate. Our results demonstrate that the combination of stealth and rapid motion make the sailfish bill an extremely effective feeding adaptation for capturing schooling prey.  相似文献

The behaviour of Diplonychus rusticum feeding on chironomid larvae has been investigated under laboratory conditions. Changes in the percentage of material extracted from prey indicated that feeding for the first two minutes enabled the predator to obtain approximately 33% of the available food; feeding for 10 minutes resulted in only 60% extraction. Comparing the percentage of each prey consumed by D. rusticum exposed to various prey densities, it was apparent that predators were more wasteful and ate less of each prey as chironomid density increased. Because the rate of food intake declined as a greater proportion of each prey was extracted, predators exposed to high chironomid densities reduced the amount of each prey consumed thereby conforming to a simple optimal feeding model.  相似文献

In the predatory beetle Notiophilus biguttatus F. pursuit and attack of prey are induced by visual stimuli associated with prey movement. The study presented in this paper shows that locomotory activity in the predator is affected by prey (springtails — Collembola) previously occupying the relevant substratum. This implies that in prey detection non-visual stimuli are also used. The following effects on locomotion were observed as responses to the cues left by prey: a substantial increase in the frequency of stops and runs and a decrease in the average duration of runs. The adaptive significance of these effects is discussed.Analysis of the experiments includes an evaluation of the statistical powers of the tests used. The estimated powers were used to interpret nonsignificant results.
Zusammenfassung Die Verfolgung und der Angriff auf eine Beute folgt beim Laufkäfer Notiophilus biguttatus allein auf die visuelle Wahrnehmung bewegender Beutetiere. In der vorliegenden Arbeit wird gezeigt, das die Aktivität des Käfers sich ändert, wenn vorher in seiner Umgebung Beutetiere (Collembolen) anwesend waren. Diese Änderung bedeutet, dass beim Beutefang auch chemische Spuren benützt werden. Dabei wurden folgende Effekte auf die Lokomotion des Käfers festgestelt: eine beträchtliche Zunahme in der Frequenz von Stehenbleiben und Laufen und eine Abnahme der durchschnittlichen Zeitdauer der Läufe. Die adaptive Bedeutung dieser Effekte wird besprochen.Die Experimente wurden einer statistischen power-Analyse unterworfen. Die power-Analyse wurde eingesetzt zur Deutung nichtsignifikanter Ergebnisse und zum Vergleich der Empfindlichkeit verschiedener Aspekte der Lokomotion für den betreffende Reiz.

Laboratory cultured Streptocephalus proboscideus (three sizes (mm), viz. 8.44 ± 0.95 (virgin), 14.18 ± 1.49 (adult I) and 19.24 ± 1.52 (adult II)) were offered (separately for males and females) field collected zooplankton (12 prey types) at three levels of abundance (1.0 ml−1, 2.0 ml−1 and 4.1 ind. ml−1 in 30-minute feeding experiments. Gut contents, analyzed for abundance and diversity of prey type, showed that predator size, sex and their interaction had strong effects on prey consumption. Regardless of their size, and of prey density, S. proboscideus females consumed 25–90% more prey than males. Their filtration rates (adult II) were higher (125 ml ind.−1 h.−1) than those of males (30 ml ind.−1 h.−1) too. Rotifers had the highest numerical percentage in the gut, regardless of predator size or sex. Cladocerans were only consumed by adults I and II. Adult II females consumed 28.5–43.3 μg zooplankton dry weight ind.−1 h.−1. Size distribution of B. longirostris in the field and in the gut were closely similar. This study confirms S. proboscideus as a non-selective filter feeder. Since it did not eat jumping rotifers, copepod nauplii and copepodites, it may contribute to structuring its prey communities, because good escapers will be enriched in the medium, while poor escapers will be depleted.  相似文献

Gastric lavage was used to investigate the effects of temperature, prey type and prey size on gastric evacuation in small cod Gadus morhua and whiting Merlangius merlangus . The fish were fed to satiation and subsequently the stomach contents were sampled to determine the rate at which food was evacuated. Satiation meal size was positively related to temperature and differed between prey types. The gastric evacuation rate (GER) also tended to increase with temperature and varied with prey type. GER at temperatures of 11.3–12.7° C averaged 1.5–1.7 times higher than at 6–9.5° C. There was no significant difference (P>0.05) in the evacuation of lugworm Arenicola marina , sandeel Ammodytes spp., and herring Clupea harengus , but the GER of brown shrimp Crangon vulgaris was much slower (P<0.05). No significant changes in GER were observed when fish were fed on three different size groups of either herring or brown shrimp. In whiting, there was no significant difference in the GER of individual herring or brown shrimp when they were fed as single species meals or incorporated in meals containing a mixture of prey species.  相似文献
