This study is the first to investigate quantitative effects of plant community composition and diversity on N2 fixation in legumes. N2 fixation in three perennial Trifolium species grown in field plots with varied number of neighbouring species was evaluated with the 15N natural abundance method (two field sites, several growing seasons, no N addition) and the isotope dilution method (one site, one growing season, 5 g N m−2). The proportion of plant N derived from N2 fixation, pNdfa, was generally high, but the N addition decreased pNdfa, especially in species-poor communities. Also following N addition, the presence of grasses in species-rich communities increased pNdfa in T. hybridum and T. repens L., while legume abundance had the opposite effect. In T. repens, competition for light from grasses appeared to limit growth and thereby the amount of N2 fixed at the plant level, expressed as mg N2 fixed per sown seed. We conclude that the occurrence of diversity effects seems to be largely context dependent, with soil N availability being a major determinant, and that species composition and functional traits are more important than species richness regarding how neighbouring plant species influence N2 fixation in legumes.  相似文献

Rates of nitrogen fixation of 3 to 10 g of N2 fixed per hectare per day were associated with root systems of Digitaria sanguinalis. A Gram-negative motile aerobic bacterial strain that was capable of N2 fixation was isolated from a washed root sample of one of these plants. Optimal growth and N2 fixation occurred at a pH of about 6.5, a temperature of 30-37 degrees C, and at a pO2 of about 0.01 atm. Increased rates of N2 fixation resulted when this strain was grown in mixed cultures with aerobic or facultative bacteria. Observations of cellular and cultural morphology and results of biochemical and physiological studies indicate that the isolate may be related to the Azotobacteraceae but that it is not identical with any of the members of this family. The importance of N2 fixation by this isolate in nature is unknown.  相似文献

Elymus repens (L.) Gould and Agrostis stolonifera (L.), are competitive grasses with guerrilla strategy that invade grasslands with a low stocking rate. In this work, we tested the hypotheses that grazing exclusion facilitates vegetative development of rhizomes and stolons of these clonal grasses and that such change is a key mechanism for their abundance in set-aside grasslands. The competitive capacities of these two guerrilla species were characterised by samples in plant community (species richness and biomass) and on the level of individual species (morphometric measurements on stolons and rhizomes) during a growing season. Compared to grasslands where grazing was excluded for three years, species richness was higher in grazed site and the plant community structure differed. Indeed, with grazing exclusion, a shift from annual species with a diversified growth-form to perennial species with a tall tussock and graminoid growth-form was monitored. In ungrazed situation, Elymus repens and Agrostis stolonifera were the dominant grasses, and the standing biomass for the lowland community showed a significant increase compared to the grazed site. Vegetative development increased competitive capacities of these two guerrilla species and led by phenomenon of competitive exclusion to the disappearance of annuals species. With grazing cessation, Elymus repens was found to increase the size of aerial traits (shoot length and the number of leaves per shoot) and this may both be propitious for achieving dominance within plant communities and also maintaining its competitive local advantage. By contrast, Agrostis stolonifera showed an increase in a root trait, i.e. rhizome length, in the fenced site, which provide good ability for spatial propagation and then to explore adjacent patches. We concluded that Elymus repens presented a morphological capacity to change its colonising strategy from a guerrilla strategy to a phalanx strategy, by morphological variability of aerial organs, when it was submitted to competitive stress and environment modifications. Agrostis stolonifera showed a capacity to escape aerial competition resulting from grazing cessation, than to increase underground propagation capacity. The present study highlighted the capacities of Elymus repens to respond in an adaptative way to competitive pressure.  相似文献

In this study we investigate the impact of nitrogen (N) deposition on the diversity of three different vegetation functional groups – forbs, grasses and mosses – using a field survey of acid grasslands across Great Britain. Our aim is to identify the vegetation types that are most vulnerable to enhanced N deposition, and to shed light on the mechanisms that may be driving N‐initiated species changes in the UK. Sixty‐eight randomly selected grasslands belonging to the UK National Vegetation Classification group U4 (Festuca ovina–Agrostis capillaris–Galium saxatile grassland) were studied along a gradient of atmospheric N deposition ranging from 6 to 36 kg N ha?1 yr?1. At each site, vegetation was surveyed and samples were taken from the topsoil and subsoil. Aboveground plant material was collected from three species: a forb, grass and moss. Both the species richness and cover of forbs declined strongly with increasing N deposition, from greater than eight species/20% cover per m2 quadrat at low levels of N to fewer than two species/5% cover at the highest N deposition levels. Grasses showed a weak but significant decline in species richness, and a trend toward increasing cover with increasing N input. Mosses showed no trends in either species richness or cover. Most of the decline in plant species richness could be accounted for by the level of ammonium deposition. Soil KCl‐extractable ammonium concentration showed a significant positive correlation with N input, but there was no relationship between N deposition and extractable nitrate. In the soil O/A horizon, there was no relationship between N deposition and %N, and only a very weak positive relationship between the level of N deposition and the C : N ratio. Finally, in the vegetation, there was no relationship between N deposition and either shoot tissue N concentration or N : P ratio for any of the three reference species. Combining our regional survey with the results of published N‐addition experiments provides compelling evidence that there has been a significant decline in the species richness and cover of forbs across Great Britain, and that the primary cause is competition due to an increase in the cover of grasses in response to enhanced deposition of reactive N, primarily NH4+.  相似文献

? Here, we examined whether fungal endophytes modulated host plant responses to light availability. First, we conducted a literature review to evaluate whether natural frequencies of endophyte symbiosis in grasses from shaded habitats were higher than frequencies in grasses occupying more diverse light environments. Then, in a glasshouse experiment, we assessed how four levels of light and the presence of endophyte symbioses affected the growth of six grass species. ? In our literature survey, endophytes were more commonly present in grasses restricted to shaded habitats than in grasses from diverse light environments. ? In the glasshouse, endophyte symbioses did not mediate plant growth in response to light availability. However, in the host grass, Agrostis perennans, symbiotic plants produced 53% more inflorescences than nonsymbiotic plants at the highest level of shade. In addition, under high shade, symbiotic Poa autumnalis invested more in specific leaf area than symbiont-free plants. Finally, shade increased the density of the endophyte in leaf tissues across all six grass species. ? Our results highlight the potential for symbiosis to alter the plasticity of host physiological traits, demonstrate a novel benefit of endophyte symbiosis under shade stress for one host species, and show a positive association between shade-restricted grass species and fungal endophytes.  相似文献

Distribution of Acremonium endophytes in several species of Agrostideae is determined through surveys conducted in the field and in grass herbaria. Widespread geographic distribution of Acremonium in a particular grass species may indicate early colonization of the grass as a host, while a narrow pattern of geographic distribution suggests more recent colonization of the grass. Two grasses that appear to show a narrow endophyte distribution include Agrostis alba and Ammophila breviligulata. Cultural features of endophytes from several grasses are compared. A new variety of Acremonium typhinum is proposed to accommodate the endophyte from A. breviligulata. An endophyte in Agrostis alba is identified as Acremonium starrii. It is also suggested that Acremonium endophytes are spreading in grasses and may be progressively colonizing new hosts.  相似文献

N2(C2H2)-fixing bacteria were isolated from the rhizosphere of various cereals and forage grasses grown in the greenhouse and from the rhizosphere of field-grown wheat in Sweden. All 46 isolates from the greenhouse plants lost their nitrogenase activity during purification. By imposing a stronger selection pressure, we obtained pure isolates with nitrogenase activity from field-grown wheat. Some isolates were identified as Enterobacter agglomerans and Bacillus polymyxa, but several bacteria of uncertain taxonomy also occurred. One of the isolates grew and reduced acetylene only in the presence of other bacteria or certain vitamins. Species of Azotobacter or Azospirillum could not be isolated from the rhizosphere of any of the cereals and forage grasses studied.  相似文献

Nitrogenase-dependent acetylene reduction activity of glasshouse-grown alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) decreased rapidly in response both to harvesting (80% shoot removal) and applied NO3 at 40 and 80 kilograms N per hectare. Acetylene reduction activity of harvested plants grown on 0 kilogram N per hectare began to recover by day 15 as shoot regrowth became significant. In contrast, acetylene reduction activity of all plants treated with 80 kilograms NO3-N per hectare and harvested plants treated with 40 kilograms NO3-N per hectare remained low for the duration of the experiment. Acetylene reduction of unharvested alfalfa treated with 40 kilograms N per hectare declined to an intermediate level and appeared to recover slightly by day 15. Changes in N2-fixing capacity were accompanied by similar changes in levels of nodule soluble protein.  相似文献

A key question in savanna ecology is how trees and grasses coexist under N limitation. We used N stable isotopes and N content to study N source partitioning across seasons from trees and associated grasses in a semi-arid savanna. We also used 15N tracer additions to investigate possible redistribution of N by trees to grasses. Foliar stable N isotope ratio (δ15N) values were consistent with trees and grasses using mycorrhiza-supplied N in all seasons except in the wet season when they switched to microbially fixed N. The dependence of trees and grasses on mineralized soil N seemed highly unlikely based on seasonal variation in mineralization rates in the Kruger Park region. Remarkably, foliar δ15N values were similar for all three tree species differing in the potential for N fixation through nodulation. The tracer experiment showed that N was redistributed by trees to understory grasses in all seasons. Our results suggest that the redistribution of N from trees to grasses and uptake of N was independent of water redistribution. Although there is overlap of N sources between trees and grasses, dependence on biological sources of N coupled with redistribution of subsoil N by trees may contribute to the coexistence of trees and grasses in semi-arid savannas.  相似文献

Species effects on nitrogen cycling: a test with perennial grasses   总被引:51,自引:9,他引:42  
Summary To test for differing effects of plant species on nitrogen dynamics, we planted monocultures of five perennial grasses (Agropyron repens, Agrostis scabra, Poa pratensis, Schizachyrium scoparium, and Andropogon gerardi) on a series of soils ranging from sand to black soil. In situ net N mineralization was measured in the monocultures for three years. By the third year, initially identical soils under different species had diverged up to 10-fold in annual net mineralization. This divergence corresponded to differences in the tissue N concentrations, belowground lignin concentrations, and belowground biomasses of the species. These results demonstrate the potential for strong feedbacks between the species composition of vegetation and N cycling. If individual plant species can affect N mineralization and N availability, then competition for N may lead to positive or negative feedbacks between the processes controlling species composition and ecosystem processes such as N and C cycling. These feedbacks create the potential for alternative stable states for the vegetation-soil system given the same initial abiotic conditions.  相似文献

The invasion of European perennial grasses represents a new threat to the native coastal prairie of northern California. Many coastal prairie sites also experience anthropogenic nitrogen (N) deposition or increased N availability as a result of invasion by N-fixing shrubs. We tested the hypothesis that greater seedling competitive ability and greater responsiveness to high N availability of exotic perennial grasses facilitates their invasion in coastal prairie. We evaluated pairwise competitive responses and effects, and the occurrence of asymmetrical competition, among three common native perennial grasses (Agrostis oregonensis, Festuca rubra, and Nassella pulchra) and three exotic perennial grasses (Holcus lanatus, Phalaris aquatica, and Festuca arundinacea), at two levels of soil N. We also compared the root and shoot biomass and response to fertilization of singly-grown plants, so we could evaluate how performance in competition related to innate plant traits. Competitive effects and responses were negatively correlated and in general varied continuously across native and exotic species. Two exceptions were the exotic species Holcus, which had large effects on neighbors and small responses to them, and competed asymmetrically with all other species in the experiment, and the native grass Nassella, which had strong responses to but little effect on neighbors, and was out-competed by all but one other species in the experiment. High allocation to roots and high early relative growth rate appear to explain Holcus’s competitive dominance, but its shoot biomass when grown alone was not significantly greater than those of the species it out-competed. Competitive dynamics were unaffected by fertilization. Therefore, we conclude that seedling competitive ability alone does not explain the increasing dominance of exotic perennial grasses in California coastal prairie. Furthermore, since native and exotic species responded individualistically, grouping species as ‘natives’ and ‘exotics’ obscured underlying variation within the two categories. Finally, elevated soil N does not appear to influence competition among the native and exotic perennial grasses studied, so reducing soil N pools may not be a critical step for the restoration of California coastal prairie.  相似文献

The presence and distribution of vertically-transmitted, asexual Neotyphodium/Epichloë endophytes in four species of widely distributed grasses, all members of the sub-family Pooideae, were determined at 57 spatially-distinct sites across Sweden in naturally-occurring grass populations. While these endophytes are well-studied in agricultural systems, much less is known about their abundance and distribution in non-agricultural systems at larger scales across landscapes. We used two screening methods to detect endophytes: 1) visual inspection of fixed, stained grass shoots, and 2) immunoblot cards with monoclonal antibodies specific for Neotyphodium / Epichloë endophytes. Infection frequency (i.e. the proportion of individuals) varied widely among species and among sites, a finding common to most studies performed in non-agricultural ecosystems. Festuca rubra had the highest overall infection frequency (23% visual screening, 27% immunoblot screening), while Deschampsia flexuosa (4%) and Poa trivialis (4%) had low frequencies of infection. None of the sampled Agrostis capillaris populations were infected. In F. rubra , the within-site infection frequency varied from 0 to 100%. A significant altitudinal gradient was found for F. rubra , with the infection frequency of the vertically-transmitted endophyte Epichloë festucae decreasing with increasing altitude above sea level. The high variation across and within grass species at different geographical locations that ours and others' studies reveal, agree with suggestions that agronomic model systems cannot be readily extrapolated to understand the ecological role of endophytes in native grasses in the wild. Further investigation into the underlying cause of the observed altitudinal gradient is required to understand broader-scale patterns in the distribution of endophyte-infected grasses.  相似文献

Epichloë typhina, a clavicipitaceous systemic phytopathogen, was isolated from two varieties and three hybrids of tall fescue (Festuca arundinaceae). The morphology of the fescue isolates was compared with E. typhina isolated from bent grass (Agrostis perennans). In all isolates, conidia were identical and were typical of E. typhina. In fescue grasses the endophyte failed to produce stromata, but on bent grass the fungus seasonally produced stromata, typical of the genus. Cattle grazing the fescue grasses showed signs of the fescue toxicity syndrome, the E. typhina was found in frequencies of 100%; in grasses from pastures in which cattle showed no signs of the syndrome, frequencies were 0 to 50%. Nutritional factors in vitro were more complex for the isolates from fescue than for the isolate from bent grass. These studies suggested that E. typhina includes biotypes that might be involved in the toxicity syndrome. The fescue biotypes grew poorly on media, and yields were inadequate for toxicity studies. However, the bent grass isolate grew well on three media, and extracts from two of these were toxic to chicken embryos. All isolates produced in vitro the nontoxic fungal steroid tetraenone [ergosta-4,6,8(14),22-tetraen-3-one], which has been isolated from toxic fescue grasses.  相似文献

国外大量研究结果表明,具有高叶氮含量和低比叶面积的干旱地区植物往往具有较高的水分利用效率。选取青海省沙珠玉治沙站地区17种主要植物(野生9种,人工8种) ,分别测定其比叶面积(SL A) ,单位重量叶氮含量(Nmass)及单位面积叶氮含量(Narea) ,并与贡嘎山湿润森林样带测定数据进行比较分析。结果表明,Nmass随SL A的增加而增加,但Nmass与SL A关系格局在固定沙丘野生多年生草本-灌木植物(类群1,Narea>3.0 g m- 2 )与流动沙丘野生短命草本植物(类群2 ,Narea<3.0 g m- 2 )之间存在策略位移现象,即在相同SL A下,类群1比类群2具有更高的叶氮含量,或在相同Nmass时类群1比类群2具有更小的比叶面积。在8个人工物种中,柠条锦鸡儿、中间锦鸡儿、绵柳和西北沙柳等灌木属于类群1,而甘草、小叶锦鸡儿、柽柳和青杨属于类群2 ,前者比后者具备更好的干旱适应机制,建议在生产上优先考虑前者。流动沙丘野生短命草本植物具有较低的叶氮含量和较高的比叶面积,这一特征与流动沙丘土壤贫瘠及其生长期内降水集中和土壤水分含量相对丰富密切相关。  相似文献

Agrostis species are mainly used in athletic fields and golf courses. Their integrity is maintained by fungicides, which makes the development of disease-resistance varieties a high priority. However, there is a lack of knowledge about resistance (R) genes and their use for genetic improvement in Agrostis species. The objective of this study was to identify and clone constitutively expressed cDNAs encoding R gene-like (RGL) sequences from three Agrostis species (colonial bentgrass (A. capillaris L.), creeping bentgrass (A. stolonifera L.) and velvet bentgrass (A. canina L.)) by PCR-based motif-directed RNA fingerprinting towards relatively conserved nucleotide binding site (NBS) domains. Sixty-one constitutively expressed cDNA sequences were identified and characterized. Sequence analysis of ESTs and probable translation products revealed that RGLs are highly conserved among these three Agrostis species. Fifteen of them were shown to share conserved motifs found in other plant disease resistance genes such as MLA13, Xa1, YR6, YR23 and RPP5. The molecular evolutionary forces, analysed using the Ka/Ks ratio, reflected purifying selection both on NBS and leucine-rich repeat (LRR) intervening regions of discovered RGL sequences in these species. This study presents, for the first time, isolation and characterization of constitutively expressed RGL sequences from Agrostis species revealing the presence of TNL (TIR-NBS-LRR) type R genes in monocot plants. The characterized RGLs will further enhance knowledge on the molecular evolution of the R gene family in grasses.  相似文献

Resistance of Micro-organisms to Inactivation by Gaseous Ethylene Oxide   总被引:8,自引:6,他引:2  
A simple method for the exposure of micro-organisms to ethylene oxide on membrane filters in a modified desiccator has been devised and used to study microbial resistance to the gaseous sterilant and the term ' R -value' is suggested to express this. The resistance of many known species and isolates has been assessed and compared. Several species of Bacillus were isolated from natural habitats and their spores were found to be more resistant than the strain of Bacillus subtilis var. niger (NCTC 10073) frequently used to monitor ethylene oxide sterilization. However, endospores of some bacterial species exhibited little resistance. Fungal spores and vegetative bacteria exhibited low resistance to the sterilant except after drying in organic material when they appeared more resistant than spores of B. subtilis var. niger. It was concluded that resistance to ethylene oxide did not correlate with resistance to heat, irradiation or other chemical disinfectants, or to the existence in the endospore form per se.  相似文献

Various bacterial species were isolated from the crop (digestive organ) of the antlion species Myrmeleon bore and tested for their insecticidal activity against caterpillars by injection. Sixty-eight isolates from the antlion crop were grouped into twenty-four species based on homologies of 16S rRNA gene sequences and biochemical properties. Isolated Bacillus cereus, Bacillus sphaericus, Morganella morganii, Serratia marcescens and a Klebsiella species killed 80% or more cutworms when injected at a dose of 5x10(5)cells per insect. In addition, cutworms killed by these isolates resembled observations made of caterpillars attacked by antlions. A culture-independent analysis showed that the isolated bacterial species are likely to be frequently present in the antlion crop. These results suggest that insecticidal microorganisms associate with antlions, and may promote the death of prey.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to determine the specific methane yields of four grass species (cocksfoot, tall fescue, reed canary grass and timothy) cultivated under boreal conditions as well as how harvesting time and year of cultivation affects the specific methane yields per ha. The specific methane yields of all grasses and all harvests varied from 253 to 394 Nl CH4/kg volatile solids (VS) added. The average specific methane yield of the 1st harvest of all grasses was higher than the 2nd harvests. In this study the methane and energy yields from different harvest years were ranged from 1200 to 3600 Nm3 CH4/ha/a, corresponding from 12 to 36 MWhCH4MWhCH4/ha/a. The methane yield per hectare of the 1st harvest was always higher than that of the 2nd harvest per hectare because of the higher dry matter yield and specific methane yield. High biomass yield per hectare, good digestibility and regrowth ability after harvesting are important factors when choosing grass species for biogas production. If 30% of fallow and the second harvest of grassland were cultivated grasses and harvested for biogas production in Finland, the energy produced could be 4.9 TWhCH4TWhCH4.  相似文献

The impact of predation by the robber fly Proctacanthus milbertii Macquart on populations of adult grasshoppers from grasslands of the Nebraska sandhills was estimated. Densities of P. milbertii were estimated at 437 individuals per hectare (2 se=122). Overall densities of 23 species of grasshoppers were estimated to be 64,000 individuals per hectare with the most abundant species (Ageneotettix deorum) having a population size of approximately 15,000 individuals per hectare. Based on three estimates of predation level (ranging from 0.5 to 2 prey per day per robber fly), P. milbertii may take from 0.5% to 2% of the adult grasshoppers per day. Species of grasshoppers were taken by P. milbertii in about the same proportion in which they occurred at the study site and no size-selective component of predation was detectable.  相似文献

Endophytic fungi in wild and cultivated grasses in Finland   总被引:7,自引:0,他引:7  
We examined the occurrence of vertically via host seeds transmitted endophyte infections of 14 grass species in natural populations in Finland and totally 97 agricultural cultivars of 13 grass species. Although endophyte infections were widespread in native grass species, overall endophyte occurrence and frequencies were lower than published reports have suggested. In natural populations, 10 out of 14 grass species examined harbor fungal endophytes in their seeds. The highest species-specific mean incidences of endophyte infected plants in infected populations were found in Agrostis capillaris. Festuca arundinacea. F. ovina. F. Pratensis. F. rubra and Phleum pratense (67%, 98%, 29%., 42%. 32% and 33%, respectively). Mean incidences were < 20% in Dactylis glomerata. Deschampsia flexuosa. D. cespitosa and Elymus repens. and no infections were detected in Calamagrostis lapponica. C. epigejos. Alopecurus pratensis and Phalaris arundinacea. However, we detected a very high variation in infection incidences among natural populations and a large proportion of populations was, indeed, endophyte-free. This supports the ideas that 1) endophytic fungi provide selective advantage of infected grasses to their uninfected eonspecifics in some habitats, and/or 2) fungi are occasionally transmitted horizontally by spores. In grass cultivars, endophyte infected seeds were detected only in F. Pratensis and Lolium perenne. and endophyte frequencies were either very high or very low. Cultivars of 11 other grass species were endophyte-free.  相似文献
