Within the postpartum period, both mothers and infants are susceptible; but because PPD typically occurs for short durations and has moderate symptoms, there exists challenges in exploring and addressing the underlying cause of the depression. This fact highlights the need for relevant animal models. In the present study, postpartum adult female cynomolgus monkeys(Macaca fascicularis) living in breeding groups were observed for typical depressive behavior. The huddle posture behavior was utilized as an indicator of behavioral depression postpartum(BDP) as it has been established as the core depressive-like behavior in primates. Monkeys were divided into two groups: A BDP group(n=6), which were found to spend more time huddling over the first two weeks postpartum than other individuals that formed a non-depression control group(n=4). The two groups were then further analyzed for locomotive activity, stressful events, hair cortisol levels and for maternal interactive behaviors. No differences were found between the BDP and control groups in locomotive activity, in the frequencies of stressful events experienced and in hair cortisol levels. These findings suggested that the postpartum depression witnessed in the monkeys was not related to external factors other than puerperium period. Interestingly, the BDP monkeys displayed an abnormal maternal relationship consisting of increased infant grooming. Taken together, these findings suggest that the adult female cynomolgus monkeys provide a natural model of behavioral postpartum depression that holds a number of advantages over commonly used rodent systems in PPD modeling. The cynomolgus monkeys have a highly-organized social hierarchy and reproductive characteristics without seasonal restriction—similar to humans—as well as much greater homology to humans than rodents. As such, this model may provide a greater translational efficiency and research platform for systematically investigating the etiology, treatment, prevention of PPD.  相似文献

The temperature and soil moisture conditions as well as vegetation patterns were studied to describe the habitat and to model the life cycle of Melanoplusfrigidus, a true alpine grasshopper of the Scandes. In the low alpine belt of the Norwegian Scandes the species colonizes only the warmest microhabitats with maximum soil surface temperatures of 31℃. Vegetation of these habitats consists of shrub-rich heath dominated by Vaccinium myrtillus and Calluna vulgaris. Using continuously measured temperature data, the development times for four different seasons were modeled and related to field observations. The maximum delay of adult molt was estimated to amount to 3 weeks, the delay being determined by the variation in spring temperature conditions between different years. The possibilities of using M. frigidus as an indicator organism of climate change effects on alpine zoo-coenoses of the Scandes are discussed.  相似文献

Photoperiodic sensitivity for diapause induction of the green lacewing, Chrysoperla sinica (Tjeder) was examined at 22℃. The adult diapause of C. sinica was induced by short-day photoperiods, and the critical photoperiod for its induction was between 12.5L-11.5D and 13L-11D.Adults developed without diapause under long-day conditions, and entered diapause under short-day conditions. The adult stage was the uppermost sensitive stage for adult diapause induction, adults could go into diapause only when the emerging adults were under diapause-inducing short-day photoperiods. The short-day photoperiodic experience by transferring between 15L: 9D and 9L: 15D at preimaginal stages did not result in adult diapause under 15L: 9D photo regime, although some treatments extended the pre-oviposition period in adult stage. The results showed that the 3rd instar larvae and pre-pupae were more sensitive to the photoperiodic change from 15L: 9D to 9L: 15D photo regime than the other preimaginal stages.  相似文献

Newly emerged larvae of the fleshfly, Boettcherisca peregrina were exposed to two different CdCl2 concentrations of 100μg/g and 400 mg/g diet fresh weight (DFW). They were administered in the diets until the end of larval stage. Cd-exposed larvae accumulated significant amounts of Cd and this accumulation increased with the exposure dose and time. The body weights were lightened and lengths of larvae were shortened considerably after Cd exposure, especially at the higher Cd concentration. The total larval duration was also extremely affected due to Cd exposure. The average duration was prolonged significantly by 14 h at the lower Cd concentration, while it was increased by 33.7 h over controls at the higher Cd concentration. A significant decrease in contents of either soluble proteins, total lipids or caloric values in the hemolymph occurred due to Cd exposure throughout the entire tested period but after 120 h of Cd exposure. In contrast, when exposed to Cd with its higher concentration, total sugar contents in the hemolymph were increased strikingly over the whole tested time, except after 96 h of Cd exposure, while they were not apparently altered except after 24 h of Cd exposure at the lower concentration. Thus, it is suggested that Cd exposure shows significant adverse impact on the growth and development, as well as metabolism, in larvae of this fleshfly, depending on its exposure time and dose.  相似文献

Development, survivorship, pupal weight, oviposition, and life table parameters of the oriental tobacco budworm, Helicoverpa assulta Guenée, were evaluated in the laboratory on an artificial diet, pepper (Capsicumfrutescens L.), and tobacco (Nicotiana tobacum L.). We found that the average developmental time of immature stages was longest on tobacco (36.2 d), intermediate on pepper (34.4 d), and shortest on artificial diet (33.5 d). Immature survival from egg to pupa varied from 31% on tobacco, 43% on pepper, and 74% on artificial diet. Pupal weight ranged from 197.4 mg/pupa on tobacco, 233.1 mg/pupa on pepper and 253.4 mg/pupa on artificial diet. The average numbers of eggs laid by adults reared as larvae on the artificial diet, pepper, or tobacco were 614, 421 and 334 eggs/female, respectively. Numbers of remaining eggs in ovaries of the adult females reared as larvae on the artificial diet, pepper, or tobacco were 16, 26, and 42 eggs/female, respectively. The longevity of adult females developed from larvae reared on the three diets was not significantly different, whereas the longevity of male adults from the larvae reared on artificial diet was longer (16.8 d) than that for males reared on tobacco (13.8 d) and pepper (13.3 d). The intrinsic, finite, gross, and net rates of increase were highest for females reared as larvae on artificial diet, lowest for females emerging from larvae reared on tobacco, and intermediate for females emerging from larvae reared on pepper. Generation times and doubling time of H. assulta were shortest for larvae fed artificial diet, intermediate from larvae reared on pepper, and longest from larvae reared on tobacco. We concluded that the artificial diet was the most suitable larval diet ofH. assulta followed by pepper, and tobacco.  相似文献

The pearl oyster Pinctada martensii is an important economic shellfish species and mainly cultured in the southern provinces of China. The species is cultured for marine pearl production. However, pearl quality has recently decreased because the cultured stocks had slow growth and mass mortalities caused by inbreeding depression. We have initiated a selective breeding program to improve the cultivated stocks since 2002. In 2004, a base population was developed by collecting the breeders from Beibuwan and Liushagang stocks. During the period of 2005–2007, a two successive generation selection for shell length in the base population was carried out to produce the second generation selected and unselected lines. In May of 2008, three types of lines were produced by selecting the breeders from the second generation selected and unselected lines. The three types of lines were designated as SS (Selected for three generations), SC (selected for the two generations) and CC (unselected for three generations). Realized heritability for the third generation, cumulative (over three generation) and current (for the third generation) genetic gains were evaluated by comparing the growth performance of three types of lines at days 8, 16, 45, 75, 180 and 360. It was found that the SS lines had significant larger mean shell length and shell height than the SC and CC lines at all sampling ages (P < 0.05). The realized heritability estimate for adult shell length for the third generation was 0.41, similar with those detected for the first and second generation. The cumulative and current genetic gains for adult shell length were 20.94% and 13.27%, respectively. The present results indicate that there exists a high genetic variation in the population and mass selection is potential to improve pearl oyster stocks.  相似文献

The chemical composition and the nutritional quality of protein, fatty acids and chitin of adult field cricket Gryllus testaceus Walker were investigated. The adult insect contalned: crude protein 58.3 %; fat 10.3 %, chitin 8.7 % and ash 2.96 % on dry matter basis respectively. The essential amino acid profile compared well with FAO/WHO recommended pattern except for cysteine and methionine. The fatty acid analysis showed unsaturated acid of the field cricket to be present in high quantities, and the total percentage of oleic acid, linolic acid and linolenic acid was 77.51%. The chitin content of the insect was 8.7 % with a better quality than the commercial chitin that was prepared from shells of shrimp and crab. Therefore the chemical composition of the field cricket indicates the insect to be a good supplement to nutrition for food and feed, even a raw material for medicine.  相似文献

Potato tuber moth, Phthorimaea ( = Gnorimoschema) operculella (Zeller) (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae), was reared from egg to adult for 3 generations on an artificial diet. At 30±2°c with a 16‐h photoperiod the total life cycle was completed in 23 days, compared with 18.5 days on potato tubers. Average life cycle data from the 3 generations reared on diet (with corresponding data from tubers in parentheses) are: larval period, 13.0(11.8) days; pupal period, 5–6(4–5) days; survival to adult, 76.1(100)%; fecundity, 102(169) eggs/?; pupal wt‐ ? 8.3(11.4) mg, ? 7.7(9.1) mg.  相似文献

The light brown apple moth, Epiphyas postvittana (Walker), was reared aseptically from newly hatched larvae to adults for three generations on a meridic diet. Growth and development on this diet were comparable with that on oligidic diets and on host‐plants. At 25 ± 1°C, 50–60% R.H., and 12‐h photophase, the average larval period was approx. 28 days, pre‐pupal and pupal 11–12 days, and pre‐oviposition approx. 2 days; the incuva‐tion period of eggs was approx. 7 days. The average developmental period from egg to adult was thus about 49 days; 89 % of larvae reached the adult stage. The average fecundity was 598 eggs per female, and the sex ratio was nearly 1:1. There were no differences in the rate of development or in fecundity of insects reared on media with and without a mould inhibitor.  相似文献

The efficacy of one new modified and two old meridic diets on Helicoverpa armigera Hübner (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) for rearing six successive generations was studied. Duration of larval development for insects fed on the modified diet was considerably shortened as most of them went through only five stadia before pupation, while the per cent pupation and per cent eclosion were relatively higher than on other diets. The lowest pupal mortality (6.33 ± 0.13%) was recorded in the F1 generation reared on the modified diet, whereas the highest pupal mortality (19.49 ± 0.15%) was observed in insects reared on a natural diet in the F6 generation. Blending of chickpea Cicer arietinum L. and red kidney bean Phaseolus vulgaris L. flours with tomato paste proved highly favorable for adult reproduction. These results suggest that the vitality of the tomato fruitworm did not decline obviously after rearing on a modified diet for several generations.  相似文献

Summary Effects of errors in estimates of the genetic correlation on the accuracy of unrestricted, optimum, and desired gains selection indices were examined experimentally in Tribolium castaneum. Three lines were selected for three generations for pupal weight at 21 days and adult weight at 31 days, using unrestricted (I9), optimum (O9), and desired gains (G9) index selection methods. The genetic correlation between pupal and adult weights in the base population was 0.95. The optimum index was designed to set the response of pupal weight by a fixed amount, while in the desired gains index the responses of pupal and adult weights were specified as being equal to 31. Three other indices were constructed using a deliberately incorrect genetic correlation (0.25), i.e., unrestricted (I2), optimum (O2), and desired gains (G2). Responses observed in unrestricted index lines (I9 versus I2) and optimum index lines (O9 versus O2) did not differ significantly, even though lines I9 and I2 differed in a practical sense. Responses in desired gains index lines (G9 versus G2) differed significantly. Responses obtained for aggregate genotype (pupal weight + adult weight) and for the component traits were greater in line I9 than those obtained in line I2. Responses obtained in the O9 and O2 lines for pupal and adult weights were similar, while those obtained in the G9 and G2 lines were similar for pupal weight but not (P<0.05) for adult weight. Therefore, underestimation of the genetic correlation seems to affect the efficiency of a desired gains index more than that of unrestricted or optimum indices.  相似文献

The effects of the mixed biocide Bacillus thuringiensis Berliner with abamectin (BtA) on the development of the parasitoid Microplitis mediator (Haliday) (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) and its cotton bollworm host, Helicoverpa armigera (Hübner) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), were evaluated in the laboratory. Weight gain in larvae of H. armigera was initially delayed, but larval developmental period increased and pupal weight increased when they were fed on a diet containing BtA. Due to increased longevity of the host larvae, the susceptible period to parasitization of H. armigera by M. mediator increased when the host larvae were reared on diets containing BtA at concentrations of 0.5, 1, 2, and 4 μg g?1. The longevity of female and male parasitoids significantly decreased when newly emerged wasps were fed a honey solution containing 200 μg ml?1 BtA in comparison with those fed only a honey solution. Mean longevity was significantly prolonged when parasitoids were fed a honey solution and BtA–honey solution in comparison with those fed BtA–distilled water, distilled water, or nothing. There were no significant differences compared with the control in any biological characteristics for the offspring of female parasitoids fed the honey solutions containing BtA at concentrations of 50, 100, and 200 μg ml?1; characteristics measured include the egg‐larval period, pupal weight, male and female pupal periods, adult fresh weight, and adult longevity. When female parasitoids parasitized host larvae that had been fed the diet containing BtA, their male and female pupal periods were significantly prolonged compared with the control (without BtA).  相似文献

Abstract To investigate the seasonal adaptation strategies of Ophraella communa to new habitats, the effects and regulation mechanisms of photoperiod and temperature on the reproductive diapause in a population collected from Changsha, Hunan were examined. Adults showed obvious reproductive diapause, which was regulated by photoperiod and temperature. At 30°C, there was no adult diapause occurring under either long‐day or short‐day conditions; at 25°C the pre‐oviposition period was short and fecundity was high in adult females under L : D 16 : 8 h, whereas under L : D 12 : 12 h, a few females entered reproductive diapause; at 20°C under short‐day conditions, all female adults entered diapause. The pre‐oviposition period was significantly prolonged when the pupae and adults were transferred from long‐days to short‐days, but the day length influence was not obvious when they were transferred only in the adult stage. However, the fecundity dropped greatly no matter whether the photoperiod shifted to short‐days only in the adult stage or whether the shift occurred in both the pupal and adult stage. The fecundity was extremely low when photoperiod shifted from long‐days to short‐days in both pupal and adult stages. This was an indication that the pupal and adult stages were the photoperiod‐sensitive stage for adult reproductive diapause. This was especially true for the photoperiod in the pupal stage, which has a distinctly significant regulative effect on reproductive diapause. Additionally, this article also addresses the reason for different photoperiodic response patterns in reproductive diapause induction between the Changsha strain and the Tsukuba strain (Japan) of O. communa.  相似文献

In this study, a number of biologic characteristics of Tetrastichus gallerucae, the most important natural enemy of Xanthogaleruca luteola (Col.: Chrysomellidae), were studied. Experiments were carried out in growth room with a temperature of 25°C±1°C, relative humidity of 60%±5% and light period of 16L:8D. The results demonstrated the following outcomes: without food and host egg, the longevity of male and female bees was respectively, 1.23 and 1.35 days. On the host egg, their longevities were 3.85 and 6.02 days, respectively. On rarefied honey their longevities were 14.04 and 24.74 days, respectively and on the host eggs together with rarefied honey, their longevities were 13.4 and 34.72 days, respectively. The average growth period times in the egg of elm leaf beetle of male and female bees were 12.97 and 12.63 days, respectively. The percentage of female bees decreases as the longevity of the insects increases. These bees lay eggs in the 1–9-day-old eggs of elm leaf beetle but 1-day-old eggs of the host are preferred by T. gallerucae.  相似文献

Abstract

Helicoverpa armigera, a serious global destructive pest of agricultural crops, is on continuous rise despite several control measures undertaken. The detrimental effects of these measures have created a dire need to explore alternate eco-safe strategies. The present study investigates the growth-regulatory and growth-arrest potential of hexane and methanol extracts of Thevetia neriifolia stems against H. armigera. Investigations revealed that larval feeding and rearing on the extract-containing diet did not result in appreciable larval mortality but delayed the larval growth and development. Both the extracts demonstrated dose-dependent effects exhibiting negative correlation between the weights gained by developmental stages and the extract concentrations. Feeding with extracts also resulted in formation of few larval–pupal and pupal–adult intermediates and significantly reduced percent adult emergence of H. armigera. Current study, however, revealed higher growth inhibitory potential of methanol extracts as compared with hexane extracts. The study attempts to provide an eco-friendly approach for H. armigera management.  相似文献

Several apiaceous and two asteraceous species were tested for their suitability to support larval development of the carrot fly. Plants grown in pots or transplanted from seed beds into pots, were inoculated with a specific number of eggs. Pupae and non-pupated larvae were collected 6–7 wk after inoculation. Both the number and weights of pupae produced varied widely among the species. Cultivated carrots Daucus carota sativus often gave rise to only moderate numbers of pupae, but these invariably attained the highest weights. Pimpinella major was the only apiaceous plant tested that did not yield any carrot flies. The two asteraceous plants Cichorium intybus and Tanacetum vulgare failed to support larval development. Total carrot fly biomass produced per plant was influenced by both the host species and the root weight. Emergence rates of adult flies were positively correlated with pupal weights. Small individuals tended to have a longer total developmental time from egg to adult fly.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

This study evaluated the potential of two aphelinid parasitoids, Encarsia sophia (Girault & Dodd) and Eretmocerus hayati (Zolnerowich & Rose) to control the sweetpotato whitefly Bemisia tabaci, (Gennadius) using a banker plant system over two consecutive years. The parasitism rates of both parasitoids on a tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) crop were determined using melon, Cucumis melo L. (Cucurbitaceae) and castor bean, Ricinus communis L. (Euphorbiaceae), as banker plants, respectively. The emergence rates of Er. hayati and En. sophia parasitoids from parasitised whiteflies on both banker plants exceeded 90% and 85%, respectively, which is 17–20 percentage points higher than that on the pupal card under field cage conditions. Parasitism (%) on banker plants was significantly higher for both parasitoids in the third week after release as compared to adult releases in the first year, reaching 15.2?±?1.3 and 24.0?±?1.4% for En. sophia and Er. hayati, respectively. However, no significant difference in parasitism (%) was observed between banker plant and pupal card release treatments in the second year. The combined release of the two parasitoids during the second year clearly showed a continuous increase in parasitism, which was higher than parasitism in the single parasitoid-release treatments by the 4th week after release. Whitefly populations were significantly lower in all parasitoid-release treatments than in the no-release control by 4–6 weeks into the study period in the second year, while no other significant differences were observed between treatments in either year. This study found that both banker plants efficiently supported populations of both parasitoids and improved their emergence compared to the pupal card.  相似文献
