Low cost treatment of polluted wastewater has become a serious challenge in most of the urban areas of developing countries. The present study was undertaken to investigate the potential of Canna lily towards removal of carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus from wastewater under sub-tropical conditions. A constructed wetland (CW) cell supporting vegetative layer of Canna lily was used to treat wastewater having high strength of CNP. Removal of biological oxygen demand (BOD3) and chemical oxygen demand (COD) varied between 69.8–96.4% and 63.6–99.1%, respectively. C. lily could efficiently remove carbon from a difficult to degrade wastewater at COD:BOD ratio of 24.4. Simultaneous reduction in TKN and nitrate pointed to good nitrification rates, and efficient plant assimilation as the dominant nutrient removal mechanism in the present study. Suitable Indian agro-climatic conditions favored plant growth and no evident stress over the Canna plant was observed. High removal rate of 809.8 mg/m2-day for TKN, 15.0 mg/m2-day for nitrate, and 164.2 mg/m2-day for phosphate suggests for a possible use of Canna-based CW for wastewater treatment for small, rural, and remote Indian communities.  相似文献

Biological denitrification of nitrate to nitrogen gas was examined in a freshwater and a marine aquarium. Nitrate removal in the aquarium water was accomplished with denitrifiers immobilized in a freeze-dried, alginate-starch matrix. Starch served as a bacterial carbon source and cellular matrix-strengthening filler. Freeze-dried beads were placed in canisters through which nitrate-rich aquarium water was recirculated. The freshwater aquarium (100 L) contained goldfish (Carassius auratus) at a total biomass of 390 g, whereas cichlids (Oreochromis mossambicus) were kept at a similar stocking density in the marine aquarium. Denitrification resulted in low ambient nitrate concentrations in both aquariums. The specific nitrate removal rate of the freshwater beads was significantly higher (50 microg of NO(3)-N/bead/day) than that of seawater beads (5 microg of NO(3)-N/bead/day). Differences in ambient nitrate concentrations between both aquariums and diffusion limitation of nitrate to the active denitrification sites within the beads might explain these observed differences.  相似文献

Nitrogen removal in biofilm waste stabilization ponds were modeled using nitrogen mass balance equations. Four pilot-scale biofilm maturation ponds were constructed in Uganda. Pond 1 was control; the others had 15 baffles in each of them. Two loading conditions were investigated (period 1, 18.2 g and period 2, 26.8 g NH4-N d−1). Total nitrogen and TKN mass balances were made. Bulk water and biofilm nitrification rates were determined and used in the TKN mass balance. Results for total nitrogen mass balance showed that for both periods, denitrification was the major removal mechanism. Nitrogen uptake by algae was more important during period 1 than in period 2. The TKN mass balance predicted well effluent TKN for period 2 than period 1. This could be due to fluctuations in algae density and ammonia uptake during period 1, no conclusions on reliability of mass balance model in period 1 was made.  相似文献

Nine filter beds have been constructed in the Nordic countries, Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden. Filter beds consist of a septic tank followed by an aerobic pre-treatment biofilter and a subsequent saturated flow grass-covered filter. Thus, filter beds are similar to subsurface flow constructed wetlands with pre-treatment biofilters, but do not have wetland plants with roots submerged into the saturated filter. All saturated filters contain Filtralite®P, a light-weight expanded clay aggregate possessing high phosphorus sorption capacity. The filter bed systems showed stable and consistent performance during the testing period of 3 years. Removal of organic matter measured as biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) was >80%, total phosphorus (TP) >94% and total nitrogen (TN) ranged from 32 to 66%. Effluent concentrations of fecal indicator bacteria met the European bathing water quality criteria in all systems. One system was investigated for virus removal and somatic viruses were not detected in the effluent. The investigations revealed that the majority of the BOD and nitrogen removal occurred in the pre-treatment filters and the phosphorus and bacteria removal was more prominent in the saturated filters. The saturated filters could be built substantially smaller than the current design guidelines without sacrificing treatment performance. The used filter material met the Norwegian regulations for reuse in agriculture with respect to heavy metals, bacteria and parasites. When saturated with phosphorus, the light-weight aggregate, Filtralite®P used in the saturated bed is a suitable phosphorus fertilizer and additionally has a liming effect.  相似文献

Compost liquor bioremediation using waste materials as biofiltration media   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Compost liquor results from the percolation of precipitation through composting waste; the release of liquids from high moisture content feedstocks; and as a result of runoff from hard surfaces and machinery. This research aimed to establish the potential for waste materials to act as media for low-cost compost liquor biofilters. Six types of potential biofilter media were packed into experimental biofilters (1 m long x 0.11 m diameter) and irrigated with compost liquor (organic loading rate of 0.6 kg/m3/d) for three months. The pH, BOD5, NH3/NH4+, and phytotoxicity of the effluent was monitored regularly. Natural, organic materials (oversize, compost and wood mulch) performed best, when compared to synthetic materials such as polystyrene packaging or inert materials such as broken brick. On average, the best media achieved 78% removal of both BOD5 and ammoniacal nitrogen during the study period. Although significant improvements in liquor quality were achieved, the effluent remained heavily polluted.  相似文献

Sulfide oxidation under chemolithoautotrophic denitrifying conditions   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
Chemolithoautotrophic denitrifying microorganisms oxidize reduced inorganic sulfur compounds coupled to the reduction of nitrate as an electron acceptor. These denitrifiers can be applied to the removal of nitrogen and/or sulfur contamination from wastewater, groundwater, and gaseous streams. This study investigated the physiology and kinetics of chemolithotrophic denitrification by an enrichment culture utilizing hydrogen sulfide, elemental sulfur, or thiosulfate as electron donor. Complete oxidation of sulfide to sulfate was observed when nitrate was supplemented at concentrations equal or exceeding the stoichiometric requirement. In contrast, sulfide was only partially oxidized to elemental sulfur when nitrate concentrations were limiting. Sulfide was found to inhibit chemolithotrophic sulfoxidation, decreasing rates by approximately 21-fold when the sulfide concentration increased from 2.5 to 10.0 mM, respectively. Addition of low levels of acetate (0.5 mM) enhanced denitrification and sulfate formation, suggesting that acetate was utilized as a carbon source by chemolithotrophic denitrifiers. The results of this study indicate the potential of chemolithotrophic denitrification for the removal of hydrogen sulfide. The sulfide/nitrate ratio can be used to control the fate of sulfide oxidation to either elemental sulfur or sulfate.  相似文献

Water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes) and water lettuce (Pistia stratiotes) were analyzed to determine their effectiveness in aquaculture wastewater treatment in Malaysia. Wastewater from fish farm in Semanggol Perak, Malaysia was sampled and the parameters determined included, the pH, turbidity, dissolved oxygen (DO), chemical oxygen demand (COD), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), nitrite phosphate (PO4(3-)), nitrate (NO(3-)), nitrite (NO(-2)), ammonia (NH3), and total kjedahl nitrogen (TKN). Also, hydroponics system was set up and was added with fresh plants weights of 150 +/- 20 grams Eichhornia crassipes and 50 +/- 10 grams Pistia stratiotes during the 30 days experiment. The phytoremediation treatment with Eichhornia crassipes had pH ranging from 5.52 to 5.59 and from 4.45 to 5.5 while Pistia stratiotes had its pH value from 5.76 to 6.49 and from 6.24 to 7.07. Considerable percentage reduction was observed in all the parameters treated with the phytoremediators. Percentage reduction of turbidity for Eichhornia crassipes were 85.26% and 87.05% while Pistia stratiotes were 92.70% and 93.69% respectively. Similar reductions were observed in COD, TKN, NO(3-), NH3, and PO4(3-). The capability of these plants in removing nutrients was established from the study. Removal of aquatic macrophytes from water bodies is recommended for efficient water purification.  相似文献

Raw leachate was treated using a two-stage upflow anaerobic filter process. Leachate from a solid waste landfill site, which received both municipal and industrial wastes, contained high organic matter (17-21 g/L COD, 13-14 g/L BOD, and 3.5-4.6 g/L volatile acids), and low metal (Zn and Fe) concentrations. Depending on sampling time, leachate composition and characteristics varied considerably. At an organic loading up to 4 g COD/day(2) media area, the BOD and COD removal percentages were 98 and 91%, respectively. The biofilters were also effective for metal removal. However, the filter effluent contained a high concentration of ammonia. System overloading was characterized by the accumulation of large quantities of volatile acids and by a now ratio of alkalinity/volatile acids, resulting in low COD removal and reduced gas production. Once the first filter was upset, the second stage could only partially respond to the volatile acids accumulated in the effluent of first filter.  相似文献

Methanol-oxidizing bacteria may play an important role in the development and use of biological treatment systems for the removal of methanol from industrial effluents. Optimization of methanol degradation potential in such systems is contingent on availability of nutrients, such as nitrogen, in the most favorable form and concentration. To that end, this study examined the variation in growth, methanol degradation, and bacterial diversity of two mixed methylotrophic cultures that were provided nitrogen either as ammonium or nitrate and in three different concentrations. Methanol-degrading cultures were enriched from biofilms sampled at a pulp and paper mill and grown in liquid batch culture with methanol as the only carbon source and either ammonium or nitrate as the only added nitrogen source. Results indicate that growth and methanol removal of the mixed cultures increase directly with increased nitrogen, added in either form. However, methanol removal and bacterial diversity, as observed by polymerase chain reaction-denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (PCR–DGGE) methods, were higher when using nitrate as the nitrogen source for enrichment and growth, rather than ammonium. Based on results described here, nitrate may potentially be a better nitrogen source when enriching or working with mixed methylotrophic cultures, and possibly more effective when used as a nutrient addition to biofilters.  相似文献

The recently developed denitrifying ammonium oxidation (DEAMOX) process combines the anammox reaction with autotrophic denitrifying conditions using sulfide as an electron donor for the production of nitrite from nitrate within an anaerobic biofilm. This paper compares a quasisteady-state performance of this process for treatment of baker's yeast wastewater under intermittent and continuous feeding and increasing nitrogen loading rate (NLR) from 300 till 858 mg N/L/d. The average total nitrogen removal slightly decreased on increasing the NLR: from 86 to 79% (intermittent feeding) and from 87 to 84% (continuous feeding). The better performance under continuous feeding was due to a more complete nitrate removal in the former case whereas the ammonia removal was similar for both feeding regimes under the comparable NLR. A possible explanation can be that, during continuous feeding (simultaneous supply of nitrate and sulfide), there were less mass transfer limitations for sulfide oxidizing denitrifiers presumably located in the outer layer of sludge aggregates. On the contrary, the ammonia oxidisers presumably located inside the aggregates apparently suffered from nitrite mass transfer limitations under both the feedings. The paper further describes some characteristics of the DEAMOX sludge.  相似文献

Experiments were conducted to investigate the feasibility of applying constructed wetlands to treat a sanitary landfill leachate containing high nitrogen and bacterial contents. Under a tropical condition (temperature of about 30 degrees C), the constructed wetland units operating at the hydraulic retention time of 8d yielded the best treatment efficiencies with BOD(5), TN and fecal coliforms removal of 91%, 96% and more than 99%, respectively. Cadmium removal in the SFCW bed was 99.7%. Mass balance analysis, based on total nitrogen contents of the plant biomass and dissolved oxygen and oxidation-reduction potential values, suggested that 88% of the input total nitrogen were uptaken by the plant biomass. Fluorescence in situ hybridization results revealed the predominance of bacteria, including heterotrophic and autotrophic, responsible for BOD(5) removal. Nitrifying bacteria was not present in the constructed wetland beds.  相似文献

Over the past decade much effort has been made to develop new carrier materials, more performant biocatalysts, and new types of bioreactors for waste gas treatment. In biofilters fungal biocatalysts are more resistant to acid and dry conditions and take up hydrophobic compounds from the gas phase more easily than wet bacterial biofilms. In the present study, a biofilter packed with a mixture of perlite and Pall rings and fed alpha-pinene-polluted air was inoculated with a new fungal isolate identified as Ophiostoma species. alpha-Pinene is a volatile pollutant typically found in waste gases from wood-related industries. The temperature of waste gas streams from pulp and paper industries containing alpha-pinene is usually higher than ambient temperature. Studies were undertaken here on the effect on performance of temperature changes in the range of 15-40 degrees C. The effect of temperature on biodegradation kinetics in continuous reactors was elucidated through equations derived from the Arrhenius formula. Moreover, the effects of the relative humidity (RH) of the inlet gas phase, transient loads (shock or starvation), and the nature of the nitrogen source on alpha-pinene removal were also studied in this research. The results suggest that the fungal biofilter appears to be an effective treatment process for the removal of alpha-pinene. The optimal conditions are: temperature around 30 degrees C, RH of the inlet waste gas stream around 85%, and nitrate as nitrogen source. The fungal biofilter also showed a good potential to withstand shock loads and recovered rapidly its full performance after a 3-7 days starvation period.  相似文献

Granular activated carbon (GAC) did not show any significant adsorption ability on the disperse dyes, while resting (living) bio-sludge of a domestic wastewater treatment plant showed high adsorption abilities on both disperse dyes and organic matter. The dye adsorption ability of bio-sludge increased by approximately 30% through acclimatization with disperse dyes, and it decreased by autoclaving. The deteriorated bio-sludge could be reused after being washed with 0.1N NaOH solution. Disperse Red 60 was more easily adsorbed onto the bio-sludge than Disperse Blue 60. The Disperse Red 60, COD, and BOD5 adsorption capacities of acclimatized, resting bio-sludge were 40.0+/-0.1, 450+/-12, and 300+/-10mg/g of bio-sludge, respectively. The GAC-SBR system could be applied to treat textile wastewater (TWW) containing disperse dyes with high dye, BOD5, COD, and TKN removal efficiencies of 93.0+/-1.1%, 88.0+/-3.1%, 92.2+/-2.7% and 51.5+/-7.0%, respectively without any excess bio-sludge production under an organic loading of 0.18 kg BOD5/m3-d. Furthermore, the removal efficiencies increased with the addition of glucose into the system. The dye, BOD5, COD, and TKN removal efficiencies of the GAC-SBR system with TWW containing 0.89 g/L glucose were 94.6+/-0.7%, 94.4+/-0.6%, 94.4+/-0.8% and 59.3+/-8.5%, respectively, under an SRT of 67+/-0.4 days.

Bio-sludge from a wastewater treatment plant could be used as an adsorbent of vat dye from textile wastewater. Resting bio-sludge gave a higher adsorption capacity than dead bio-sludge. The resting bio-sludge from a textile wastewater treatment plant gave relatively high COD, BOD5 and dye adsorption capacity of 364.4 +/- 4.3, 178.0 +/- 9.0 and 50.5 +/- 1.3 mg/g of bio-sludge, respectively, in synthetic textile wastewater containing 40 mg/l Vat Yellow 1. Another advantage of the bio-sludge was that, after washing with 0.1 N NaOH solution, it was reusable without any activity loss. Through treatment with a sequencing batch reactor (SBR) system, both organic and dye in STIWW could be removed. The maximum dye (Vat Yellow 1), COD, BOD5 and TKN removal efficiencies of the SBR system under an MLSS of 2000 mg/l and an HRT of three days were 98.5 +/- 1.0%, 96.9 +/- 0.7%, 98.6 +/- 0.1% and 93.4 +/- 1.3%, respectively. Although, the dye and organic removal efficiencies of the SBR system with real textile wastewater were quite low, they could be increased by adding organic matters, especially glucose. The dye, COD, BOD5 and TKN removal efficiencies of the SBR system with glucose (0.89 g/l) supplemented textile industrial wastewater were 75.12 +/- 1.2%, 70.61 +/- 3.4%, 96.7 +/- 0.0%, and 63.2 +/- 1.1%, respectively.  相似文献

Each kind of conventional plastic filler (polyurethane filler, SPR-1 suspension filler, TA-II elastic filler and sphere filler) coupled with alkaline pretreated corncob (A.H.corncob) was applied in each bioreactor system for treating polluted water with nitrate and organics. Results demonstrated that addition of A.H.corncob could achieve simultaneous removal of nitrogen and organics, and coupling of SPR-1 suspension filler with A.H.corncob (R2) had the best performance. In coupling system of R2, the total nitrogen (TN) removal rate improved from below 10% to 55.92 ± 18.27% with effluent CODMn concentration maintaining at a low level of 2.67 ± 0.44 mg L?1. Microbial analysis of combined filler system demonstrated that conventional plastic filler mainly accumulated non-solid-phase denitrifiers for both nitrate and organics removal including genera Salipiger, Enterobacteriaceae etc. while A.H.corncob carrier was stronghold of solid-phase denitrifiers (Runella, etc.) directly using lignocellulosic materials as carbon source and fermentative bacteria (Coprococcus, etc.) for supplementing available carbon sources for denitrifiers in the system, which were integrated to achieve simultaneous removal of nitrate and organics.  相似文献

The aim of this work was to study the efficiency of the packed cage rotating biological contactor (RBC) system with synthetic wastewater (SWW) containing 800 mg/l BOD(5) with various cyanide residue concentrations and hydraulic loading time. The results showed that cyanide had a negative effect to both the system's efficiency and bio-film quality. An increase in cyanide concentration led to a decrease in bio-film growth and the consequent reduction in the removal efficiency of the system. Also, the effluent suspended solids (SS) of the system was increased with increasing cyanide concentrations because the bio-film detached from the media due to the toxicity of the cyanide residue. The system showed the highest COD, BOD(5), TKN and cyanide removal efficiencies of 94.0 +/- 1.6%, 94.8 +/- 0.9%, 59.1 +/- 2.8% and 95.5 +/- 0.6%, respectively, with SWW containing 5 mg/l cyanide under HRT of 8 days, while they were only 88.8 +/- 0.7%, 89.5 +/- 0.5%, 40.3 +/- 1.1% and 93.60 +/- 0.09%, respectively, with SWW containing 40 mg/l cyanide. In addition, the effluent ammonia, nitrite and nitrate were increased with increases in cyanide concentration or loading. However, the system with SWW containing the highest cyanide concentration of 40 mg/l showed almost constant COD and BOD(5) removal efficiencies of 89% and 90%, even when the system was controlled under the lowest HRT of 8 h.  相似文献

Ecophysiology of abundant denitrifying bacteria in activated sludge   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
The abundance of potential denitrifiers in full-scale wastewater treatment plants with biological nitrogen and phosphorus removal was investigated by FISH and various oligonucleotide probes. The potential denitrifiers were characterized as probe-defined populations that were able to consume radiolabelled substrate with oxygen, nitrate and nitrite as electron acceptor as determined by microautoradiography. The most abundant potential denitrifiers were related to the genera Aquaspirillum, Azoarcus, Thauera and Rhodocyclus, all within the Betaproteobacteria. They made up 20-49% of all bacteria in most of the 17 nitrogen removal plants investigated and were hardly present in four plants without denitrification. The ecophysiology of Aquaspirillum, Azoarcus and Thauera-related bacteria was consistent within each probe-defined group in the plants investigated. These three groups showed distinct physiological differences, with the Aquaspirillum-related bacteria appearing as the most specialized one, consuming only amino acids among the substrates tested, and Thauera as the most versatile consuming some volatile fatty acids, ethanol and amino acids. The coexistence of Aquaspirillum, Azoarcus and Thauera-related bacteria in a range of treatment plants with differences in wastewater, design and operation suggest that the populations ensure a functional stability of the plants by occupying different ecological niches related to the carbon transformation.  相似文献

Surface sediments are important systems for the removal of anthropogenically derived inorganic nitrogen in estuaries. They are often characterized by the presence of a microphytobenthos (MPB) biofilm, which can impact bacterial communities in underlying sediments for example by secretion of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) and competition for nutrients (including nitrogen). Pyrosequencing and qPCR was performed on two intertidal surface sediments of the Westerschelde estuary characterized by a two-fold difference in MPB biomass but no difference in MPB composition. Doubling of MPB biomass was accompanied by a disproportionately (ten-fold) increase in total bacterial abundances while, unexpectedly, no difference in general community structure was observed, despite significantly lower bacterial richness and distinct community membership, mostly for non-abundant taxa. Denitrifier abundances corresponded likewise while community structure, both for nirS and nirK denitrifiers, remained unchanged, suggesting that competition with diatoms for nitrate is negligible at concentrations in the investigated sediments (appr. 1 mg/l NO3-). This study indicates that MPB biomass increase has a general, significantly positive effect on total bacterial and denitrifier abundances, with stimulation or inhibition of specific bacterial groups that however do not result in a re-structured community.  相似文献

Criteria and Methodology for Identifying Respiratory Denitrifiers   总被引:2,自引:1,他引:1       下载免费PDF全文
Respiratory denitrification is not always adequately established when bacteria are characterized. We have tested a simple method that allows one to evaluate whether the two necessary criteria to claim denitrification have been met, namely, that N(inf2) or N(inf2)O is produced from nitrate or nitrite and that this reduction is coupled to a growth yield increase. Microorganisms were cultured in sealed tubes under a helium headspace and in the presence of 0, 2, 4, 7, and 10 mM nitrate or nitrite. After growth had ceased, N(inf2) and N(inf2)O were quantified by gas chromatography and the final protein concentration was measured. Net protein production was linearly related to nitrate concentration for all denitrifiers tested and ranged from 2 to 6 g of protein per mol of electron equivalent reduced. Nitrogen recovery as N(inf2) plus N(inf2)O from nitrate and nitrite transformed exceeded 80% for all denitrifiers. We also suggest that a rate of N gas production of >10 (mu)mol/min/g of protein can be used as an additional characteristic definitive of denitrification since this process produces gas more rapidly than other processes. These characteristics were established after evaluation of a variety of well-characterized respiratory denitrifiers and other N(inf2)O-producing nitrate reducers. Several poorly characterized denitrifiers were also tested and confirmed as respiratory denitrifiers, including Aquaspirillum itersonii, Aquaspirillum fasciculus, Bacillus azotoformans, and Corynebacterium nephridii. These criteria distinguished respiratory denitrifiers from other groups that reduce nitrate or produce N(inf2)O. Furthermore, they correctly identified respiratory denitrification in weak denitrifiers, a group in which the existence of this process may be overlooked.  相似文献
