A viable option for increasing nitrogen (N) use efficiency and mitigation of negative impacts of N on the environment is to capitalize on multi-element interactions through implementation of nutrient management programs that provide balanced nutrition. Numerous studies have demonstrated the immediate efficacy of this approach in the developing regions like China and India as well as developed countries in North America. Based on 241 site-years of experiments in these countries, the first-year N recovery efficiency (RE) for the conventional or check treatments averaged 21% while the balanced treatments averaged 54% RE, for an average increase of 33% in RE due to balanced nutrition. Effective policies to promote adoption are most likely those that enable site-specific approaches to nutrient management decisions rather than sweeping, nation-wide incentives supporting one nutrient over another. Local farmers, advisers and officials need to be empowered with tools and information to help them define necessary changes in practices to create more balanced nutrient management. 相似文献

There is a growing concern about excessive nitrogen (N) and water use in agricultural systems in North China due to the reduced
resource use efficiency and increased groundwater pollution. A two-year experiment with two soil moisture by four N treatments
was conducted to investigate the effects of N application rates and soil moisture on soil N dynamics, crop yield, N uptake
and use efficiency in an intensive wheat–maize double cropping system (wheat–maize rotation) in the North China Plain. Under
the experimental conditions, crop yield of both wheat and maize did␣not␣increase significantly at N rates above 200 kg N ha−1. Nitrogen application rates affected little on ammonium-N (NH4-N) content in the 0–100 cm soil profiles. Excess nitrate-N (NO3-N), ranging from 221 kg N ha−1 to 620 kg N ha−1, accumulated in the 0–100 cm soil profile at the end of second rotation in the treatments with N rates of 200 kg N ha−1 and 300 kg N ha−1. In general, maize crop has higher N use efficiency than wheat crop. Higher NO3-N leaching occurred in maize season than in wheat season due to more water leakage caused by the concentrated summer rainfall.
The results of this study indicate that the optimum N rate may be much lower than that used in many areas in the North China
Plain given the high level of N already in the soil, and there is great potential for reducing N inputs to increase N use
efficiency and to mitigate N leaching into the groundwater. Avoiding excess water leakage through controlled irrigation and
matching N application to crop N demand is the key to reduce NO3-N leaching and maintain crop yield. Such management requires knowledge of crop water and N demand and soil N dynamics as
they change with variable climate temporally and spatially. Simulation modeling can capture those interactions and is considered
as a powerful tool to assist in␣the␣future optimization of N and irrigation managements.

Are development and growth of pea aphids,Acyrthosiphon pisum,in North America adapted to local temperatures? 总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6
Summary Developmental rate and adult weight were studied at constant temperatures from 9.8 to 27.9°C for 18 clones from each of five populations of the pea aphid, Acyrthosiphon pisum (Harris), from locations between 39 and 53°N latitude in central North America. The response of developmental rate to temperature for each clone was accurately described by a three parameter non-linear equation. Adult weight usually decreased with increasing rearing temperature, but the shape of the response to temperature varied among clones. Variation in the developmental parameters was greater among clones within populations than among populations. No consistent trends were observed in the developmental parameters or adult weights either with latitude or the long term average temperatures at the locations. We conclude that previously reported geographic variation in the developmental threshold of this species, which was attributed to local adaptation, occurred either because the clones tested were not representative of the populations or because rearing methods differed among studies. Biological nitrogen fixation, the main source of new nitrogen to the Earth's ecosystems, is catalysed by the enzyme nitrogenase. There are three nitrogenase isoenzymes: the Mo‐nitrogenase, the V‐nitrogenase and the Fe‐only nitrogenase. All three types require iron, and two of them also require Mo or V. Metal bioavailability has been shown to limit nitrogen fixation in natural and managed ecosystems. Here, we report the results of a study on the metal (Mo, V, Fe) requirements of Azotobacter vinelandii, a common model soil diazotroph. In the growth medium of A. vinelandii, metals are bound to strong complexing agents (metallophores) excreted by the bacterium. The uptake rates of the metallophore complexes are regulated to meet the bacterial metal requirement for diazotrophy. Under metal‐replete conditions Mo, but not V or Fe, is stored intracellularly. Under conditions of metal limitation, intracellular metals are used with remarkable efficiency, with essentially all the cellular Mo and V allocated to the nitrogenase enzymes. While the Mo‐nitrogenase, which is the most efficient, is used preferentially, all three nitrogenases contribute to N2 fixation in the same culture under metal limitation. BackgroundIn the Karunagappally cohort, esophageal cancer is the third most common cancer with an age-adjusted incidence rate of 6.2 per 100,000 person-years among men. The present study analyzed the risk of esophageal cancer in relation to alcohol drinking and tobacco use.MethodsThe study included 65,528 men aged 30–84 years in the Karunagappally cohort, India.ResultsPoisson regression analysis showed that alcohol drinking significantly increased (P = 0.027) the risk of esophageal cancer and the relative risk (RR) for current drinkers was 1.6, (95 % confidence interval (CI) = 1.1–2.3). The risk increased significantly in heavy alcohol drinkers (250 g of ethanol or above per day) (RR = 2.1, 95 % CI = 1.2–3.5) (P for trend = 0.014) and among current arrack consumers (RR = 1.8, 95 % CI = 0.99–3.29) (P for trend = 0.025). Current bidi and cigarette smokers showed an increase in the trend of cancer risk. A significantly higher risk was seen in those who had started smoking bidi before the age of 18 years, RR = 1.9 (95 % CI = 1.1–3.3) (P for trend = 0.044). Furthermore, increased RR for heavy bidi and cigarette smokers were 1.6 (95 % CI = 1.1–2.5) and 2.4 (95 % CI = 1.3–4.5), respectively.ConclusionTo the best of our knowledge, this is the first cohort study in India to report an increased esophageal cancer risk with respect to alcohol drinking. 相似文献

Abstract Bean anthracnose pathogen (Colletotrichum lindemuthianum) known to display high pathogenic variability, also explains the existence of large number of races in Himachal Pradesh. An evolution model based on virulence data of 29 C. lindemuthianum races and RAPD patterns revealed the existence of four evolutionary groups (EG I – EG IV) in Himachal Pradesh, accommodating 12, 14, 2 and 1 races, respectively. Some races viz., 935, 643, 529, 647 and 613, opted more than two evolutionary routes and races like 598, 707, 935, 631, 639, 615, 115 and 119 harbouring more than six virulence genes may pose a threat to bean cultivation in this part of the world as they can break many resistance genes present in the locally grown beans. However, two exotic accessions G 2333 and AB 136 resistant to all the Indian pathotypes could be exploited as resistance donors in developing anthracnose resistant cultivars suitable for cultivation in this region. 相似文献

The subjective impression of many patients using ‘swing through’ gait, in which the body is swung over the crutches with both feet clear of the ground, is that elbow crutches are less stable and more difficult to use than conventional underarm crutches (known as axillary crutches). A study was undertaken on ten normal subjects to see if objective measurements of speed and relative energy expenditure by means of heart rate monitoring via radio telemetry could confirm these impressions when both types of crutch were compared to normal walking. The results unexpectedly showed that heart rates were higher for axillary crutches, even though all subjects considered them easier to use than elbow crutches. The increase in heart rate using axillary crutches requires further study, but it was considered that it might in part be due to pressure on the thoracic cage. Because of this, Canadian crutches, which are a compromise between the two former types and do not bear on the thorax, were similarly monitored. Results from this third trial showed a marked decrease in heart rate with a marginal increase in speed over both axillary and elbow crutches. Because of this a recommendation is made for Canadian crutches to be used more frequently. 相似文献

However, a lack of consensus on two key issues—mobilization of the necessary resources; and the scope and functioning of regulatory regimes that govern access to genetic resources and the sharing of benefits resulting from their use—threaten progress under the next 10‐year strategic plan of the Convention on Biological Diversity. We highlight systemic misconceptions concerning the financing of biodiversity and the burden this places on the Access and Benefit Sharing (ABS) system. We caution that unworkable ABS regulatory frameworks and conflating ABS with resource mobilization could disrupt science policies built on open access, with potentially severe ramifications for research and innovation. To resolve these tensions, we call for a recalibration of ABS to maximize the value delivered by biodiversity for all of society, including indigenous peoples and local communities. 相似文献

Aims Understanding the effects of soil microorganism at different elevations on plant C:N:P stoichiometry can help us to understand the plant-soil interactions in the context of climate change. Our aim was to quantify the independent and interactive effects of soil microbial communities and temperatures on the C, N, and P in the leaves of Dodonaea viscosa-a global widespread species. Methods Rhizosphere soils of D. viscosa were collected from two elevation zones in Yuanmou County, Yunnan Province. A 2 × 3 factorial experiment with six replications was conducted using climate chambers. The leaf C, N and P contents and the soil properties were measured after three months of the treatments. Important findings Compared with the autoclaved treatment, inoculated rhizosphere soils from both high and low elevations had higher nutrient absorption, especially P uptake. Temperature produced no significant effect on leaf C:N:P stoichiometry, but the interactive effect of temperature and microbial treatment appeared significant. For inoculated rhizosphere soils from high elevation, temperature had no significant effect on leaf C:N:P stoichiometry. For inoculated rhizosphere soils from low elevation, leaf N and P contents under low temperature were significantly lower than those with warmer soils. The promoting effect of soil microorganisms on nutrient uptake may be due to the direct effect of beneficial microorganisms (e.g., mycorrhizal fungi), but not through the alteration of nutrient cycling process. Because D. viscosa in the inoculated rhizosphere soils absorbed more N and P from the soil than those in autoclaved soil, the available N and P in inoculated rhizosphere soils were lower than those in autoclaved soils. As predicted future temperature will be lower in the studied region, the growth of D. viscosa may be negatively affected through plant-microbe feedbacks. 相似文献

Cropping on jhum fallows in north-eartern India is predominantly done for one year in a jhum cycle. If second year cropping
is done, expanse of the forest land required for slashing and burning could be reduced significantly. We tested this hypothesis
in a young (6 yr) and an old (20 yr) jhum fallow. We also evaluated if the productivity during second year cropping could
be alleviated by auxiliary measures such as tilling the soil or application of fertilizers (chemical or farm-yard manure or
both in combination). The results demonstrate that the ecosystem productivity (total dry matter production) and economic yield
(rice grain production) decline with shortening of jhum cycle. Second year cropping causes a further decline in ecosystem
productivity in old jhum field, but not in young jhum field. Economic yield from second year cropping in its traditional form
(without any fertilizer treatment) is not much lower than that in the first year, and can be improved further by manuring
the soil. Tilling of soil improves neither ecosystem productivity nor economic yield. Different fertilization treatments respond
differently; while inorganic manuring enhances ecosystem productivity, a combination of inorganic and organic manuring improves

Previous studies have shown that in water the affinity of submerged macrophytes for CO2 is higher for species restricted to CO2 than for species with an additional ability to use bicarbonate. We measured slopes of CO2 uptake versus CO2 concentration in the gas phase in air, nitrogen and helium for pairs of species, having or lacking the ability to use bicarbonate,
but with similar leaf morphology. For species restricted to CO2, the slope in nitrogen and helium was 1.5 times and 3.2 times greater than in air. The increased slope in nitrogen results
from a suppression of photorespiration. The further increase in helium reflects the increased rate of diffusion of CO2 and shows that, even in gas, external diffusion through the boundary layer is a significant hindrance to CO2 uptake. In contrast, in species able to use bicarbonate, the uptake slope was not affected by gas composition, suggesting
that photorespiration is absent or photorespired CO2 is efficiently trapped and that internal resistance is high relative to external resistance. Elodea canadensis specimens grown under high concentrations of CO2 de-regulated their ability to use bicarbonate, and slopes of CO2 uptake in helium were significantly greater than in air or nitrogen. Overall, these results are consistent with the notion
that while a high affinity for CO2 will maximise carbon uptake in species restricted to CO2, for species able to use bicarbonate, a high internal resistance would reduce loss of CO2 and help maintain high concentrations of CO2 at the site of fixation.

Atmospheric nitrogen (N) deposition in subtropical metropolitan regions has increased greatly because of rapid urbanization, and such increase could lead to N-related changes in soil properties and plant diversity in remnant forests of urban ecosystems. To investigate the pattern of atmospheric N deposition along an urban?Crural gradient in metropolitan Guangzhou, southern China, and to assess the potential influence of N deposition on soil properties and understory plant diversity in remnant forests, precipitation, and soil samples were collected and vegetation was surveyed from four forest sites between March 2010 and March 2011. The atmospheric inorganic nitrogen deposition (DIN) decreased with increasing distance from the urban center: DIN inputs were 43.3, 41.2, 35.2, and 30.1?kg?N?ha?1?year?1 in two urban sites, a suburban site and a rural site, respectively. However, forest soil N status (NH4 +-N, NO3 ?-N, and total nitrogen) showed the opposite pattern. Understory herb-layer diversity was negatively correlated to DIN input and positively correlated to soil calcium (Ca) and potassium (K) concentrations and pH; with highest herb-layer diversity found in the rural site receiving the lowest amount of DIN input. These results indicated that higher DIN along with soil acidification and leaching of base cations (Ca and K) might change the current N status and increase nutrients leaching and thereby cause reductions in understory plant diversity. A regional policy linking atmospheric pollution and land protection is needed to protect the most N-sensitive herb species (e.g., forbs and ferns) in these remnant forests. 相似文献

Morphine is usually preferred to treat moderate or severe pain for late‐stage cancer patients. However, medically unindicated or excessive morphine use may result in respiratory depression and death. This essay contends that a clear distinction between relieving pain and performing active euthanasia in the use of morphine should be made in practice. By drawing on Confucian virtue resources, we construct a Confucian conception of human dignity, including both intrinsic and acquired dignity, to analyze the circumstances of morphine use in current China. We argue that not only the Confucian view of intrinsic dignity but also that of acquired dignity would not support morphine euthanasia. 相似文献

Whereas the El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) affects weather and climate variability worldwide, the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) represents the dominant climate pattern in the North Atlantic region. Both climate systems have been demonstrated to considerably influence ecological processes. Several other large-scale climate patterns also exist. Although less well known outside the field of climatology, these patterns are also likely to be of ecological interest. We provide an overview of these climate patterns within the context of the ecological effects of climate variability. The application of climate indices by definition reduces complex space and time variability into simple measures, ''packages of weather''. The disadvantages of using global climate indices are all related to the fact that another level of problems are added to the ecology-climate interface, namely the link between global climate indices and local climate. We identify issues related to: (i) spatial variation; (ii) seasonality; (iii) non-stationarity; (iv) nonlinearity; and (v) lack of correlation in the relationship between global and local climate. The main advantages of using global climate indices are: (i) biological effects may be related more strongly to global indices than to any single local climate variable; (ii) it helps to avoid problems of model selection; (iii) it opens the possibility for ecologists to make predictions; and (iv) they are typically readily available on Internet. 相似文献
