Paraspinibarbus,a new genus of cyprinid fishes from the Red River basin

Paraspinibarbus, a new and monotypic genus, is erected forSpinibarbus macracanthus Pellegrin et Chevey, 1936, a cyprinid from the Red River basin. It is characterized by a procumbent predorsal spine and a very thick lower lip with a continuous postlabial groove.Balantiocheilus hekouensis Wu, 1977 is a junior subjective synonym ofParaspinibarbus macracanthus. A lectotype is designated forS. macracanthus.     

Description of the neotype ofRepomucenus sagitta (Callionymidae) with comments on the species

The neotype ofRepomucenus sagitta is described. Specimens conspecific with the neotype from India, the Gulf of Thailand, the South China Sea, the Yellow Sea and Australia are described. Sexual characters, geographic variation, habitat and geographic distribution were noted.Repomucenus macdonaldi is a junior synonym ofR. sagitta as defined by the neotype.

Some comments on the taxonomy of the species of the genus Neogrubea Dillon & Hargis, 1968 (Monogenea: Mazocraeidae) and their synonyms

The genus Asymmetria Suriano, 1975 is considered a junior synonym of Neogrubea. Similarly, the species A. symmetria Suriano, 1975 is considered to be a junior synonym of N. soni Evdokimova, 1969, and A. platensis Rey & Meneses, 1985 and possibly N. stromateae Gibson, 1976 junior synonyms of N. seriolellae Dillon & Hargis, 1968.     

Revision ofMesorhyphus Handlirsch,Eoplecia Handlirsch andHeterorhyphus Bode (Diptera: Anisopodomorpha,Bibionomorpha) from the upper liassic of Germany

The holotypes of the Lower Jurassic DipteraMesorhyphus nanus Handlirsch 1920,M. areolatus Handlirsch 1939,M. anomalus Handlirsch 1939,Eoplecia primitiva Handlirsch 1920,Heterorhyphus latus Bode 1953,H. analivarius Bode 1953 andProtorhyphus (?)ovisimilis Bode 1953 were re-examined. The holotype ofEoplecia primitiva is the counterpart ofMesorhyphus areolatus. M. areolatus is a junior synonym ofM. nanus. Mesorrhyphoides Rohdendorf 1962 is a synonym ofHeterorhyphus Bode 1953.Heterorhyphus analivarius is a synonym ofProtorhyphus (?)ovisimilis, being mistakenly described from the counterpart of the holotype of the latter. The genusHeterorhyphus is valid and comprises onlyH. anomalus (Handlirsch 1939) n. comb.;H. latus is a synonym of the latter species. As the wing venation ofHeterorhyphus is conspicuously different from all fossil and Recent Anisopodomorpha, it is placed into a new family, Heterorhyphidae, within the Bibionomorpha.     

Synonymy of two species of the genus <Emphasis Type="Italic">Platycephalus</Emphasis> and validity of <Emphasis Type="Italic">Platycephalus westraliae</Emphasis> (Teleostei: Platycephalidae)

The type specimens of platycephalid Platycephalus endrachtensis Quoy and Gaimard 1825 are regarded as being conspecific with Platycephalus arenarius Ramsay and Ogilby 1886, so the latter becomes a junior synonym. This species is characterized as having a caudal fin with four or more longitudinal dark bands and lacking a yellow blotch. It is also found that Platycephalus westraliae (Whitley 1938), which had been considered to be a junior synonym of Platycephalus bassensis Cuvier 1829, is a valid species. Specimens that recently had been mistakenly identified as “P. endrachtensis,” having the caudal fin with three or four longitudinal dark bands and a yellow blotch on the upper lobe, should be referred to P. westraliae.     

Description of the larva of <Emphasis Type="Italic">Curteria</Emphasis> Southcott, 1961 (Acari,Parasitengona, Erythraeidae) with notes on biology and life cycle

The larvae of Curteria episcopalis (C.L. Koch, 1837) and Curteria southcotti Gabryś, 1992, are described based on specimens reared in the laboratory. Pedroerythraeus Haitlinger, 2004 is considered a junior synonym of Curteria. Data on habitat specificity and phenology of the species as well as on development of eggs into larvae are given.     

Clarification and review of Lepidopilum affine and L. grevilleanum (Callicostaceae)

Lepidopilum grevilleanum Mitt., long considered a synonym ofL. affine C. Müll., is a distinct and rare species of western Ecuador.Lepidopilum affine is widespread, presently known from the western and northern Amazon basin, Atlantic region of northern South America, and the Pacific coastal region of Central America. Several new synonyms are proposed forLepidopilum affine: L. allionii Broth.,L. ambiguum Broth.,L. antisanense Bartr.,L. mittenii C. Müll.,L. obtusulum C. Müll., andL. subobtusulum Broth.Lepidopilum pulcherrimum Steere is a synonym ofL. grevilleanum.     

Parabittacus analis Handlirsch 1939 undParabittacus lingula (Bode 1953), Neorthophlebiiden (Insecta: Mecoptera) aus dem Oberen Lias von Deutschland

The holotype ofParabittacus analis Handlirsch 1939 from the Upper Liassic of Dobbertin is redescribed after preparation and considered a representative of the Neorthophlebiidae. The genusPolydicrobittacus Bode 1953 from Hondelage is a junior synonym ofParabittacus.     

A re-evaluation ofBlayacina Cobbold 1932 andThoralaspis Hupe 1953 (Trilobita: Redlichiida)

The monotypic trilobite generaBlayacina andThoralaspis from the late Early Cambrian of the Montagne Noire, Southern France, are revised. Restudy of the type specimens and of new material from the type locality and stratum as well as morphometric measurements strongly support the assumption that both taxa are identical and that morphologic as well as taxonomic differences resulted from tectonic distortion. Thus,Thoralaspis thorali has to be regarded as a subjective junior synonym ofBlayacina miqueli andThoralaspis as a junior synonym ofBlayacina. Its systematic position as a morphologic group aroundLusatiops within the Ellipsocephalidae-Protoleninae is confirmed.

The generic nameTriso is proposed for the epinephelin fish recent authors have identified asTrisotropis dermopterus (Temminck et Schlegel).Trisotropis Gill is a junior synonym ofMycteroperca Gill.Triso is distinctive in its short head, broad interorbital, foreshortened neurocranium, anteriorly inclined parasphenoid, high and laterally oriented frontoparietal crests, high dorsal fin-ray counts, and pouch-like esophageal swellings.Altiserranus woorei Whitley from New South Wales is placed in the synonymy ofT. dermopterus. Altiserranus Whitley, type speciesEpinephelus multinotatus (Peters), is synonymized withEpinephelus Bloch.T. dermopterus occurs in the Northern Hemisphere off Japan, Korea, Taiwan, and China, and in the Southern Hemisphere off eastern and western Australia; thus it is antitropical in distribution. Available evidence indicates thatTriso may be most closely related to the New World genusParanthias Guichenot.     

Revision of<Emphasis Type="Italic">Cheliderpeton vranyi</Emphasis><Emphasis Type="SmallCaps">Fritsch</Emphasis>, 1877 (Amphibia,Temnospondyli) from the Lower Permian of Bohemia (Czech Republic)

The temnospondylCheliderpeton vranyi Fritsch, 1877 from the Lower Permian Ruprechtice horizon (Rotliegend) of the Intrasudetic Basin (Bohemia, Czech Republic) is redescribed. Many features of the skeleton permit a new understanding of the type species and consequently of the genus. Diagnostic characters are the narrow and round-tipped snout, straight to convex outline of the skull roof, narrow and long otic notch, posteriorly expanded quadratojugal, and the relatively wide and short rhombic interclavicle. The ilium with a short, expanded dorsal branch and the missing contact of nasal/maxilla are features shared with the related Upper PermianIntasuchus from Russia and the Eryopidae.Actinodon germanicus is a junior synonym ofCheliderpeton vranyi.      

The development stages of limnophyes globifer (Lundström) (diptera: chironomidae)

The larva, pupa and adult female of Limnophyes globifer (Lundström) are described for the first time, and the adult male is redescribed from material from a greater geographic range than hitherto. A lectotype is designated for L. globifer and it is suggested that Limnophytes folliculatus Saether is a junior synonym of L. globifer.Entomology Department, British Museum (Natural History)

The taxonomic history of the family Lecanicephalidae Braun, 1900, a little known group of marine cestodes

Parataenia Linton cannot exist as a cestode genus as it is preoccupied. Discobothrium van Beneden is not a junior synonym of Echeneibothrium van Beneden, and Hornellobothrium Shipley & Hornell and Eniochobothrium Shipley & Hornell are very likely not junior synonyms of Discobothrium. Hexacanalis Perrenoud should be considered a junior synonym of Cephalobothrium Shipley & Hornell. Yogeshwaria Chincholikar & Shinde, Spinocephalum Deshmukh and Flapocephalus Deshmukh are considered unrecognisable. Staurobothrium Shipley & Hornell should be returned to the Phyllobothriidae. Balanobothrium Hornell should remain in the Onchobothriidae Braun. The order Lecanicephalidea was not established by Baylis. There are no grounds for recognising the superfamily Lecanicephaloidea Southwell which contains only the Lecanicephalidae Braun. The elevation of the lecanicephalids to an order, the Lecanicephala, does not appear to be valid. To avoid further confusion the scheme set out by Braun (1900) should be used as a basis for classification of the lecanicephalids.     

A short note onLecane species (rotifera) found inUtricularia minor vegetation

Summary InUtricularia minor vegetation a number ofLecane spp. are found. Remarks are made regarding confusion resulting from the use of VOIGT's keys. L.glypta is a synonym ofL.flexilis; L. lunaris andL.constricta belong to the species group L.lunaris andL.sinuata is a form ofL.hamata; L.hamata f.sinuata is new to the European fauna.

A lectotype is designated for T. inflata Bezzi, and T. dentata Edwards is shown to be its junior synonym.
