Questions: What are important forest characteristics determining colonization of forest patches by forest understorey species? Location: Planted forests on land recently reclaimed from the sea, the Netherlands. Methods: We related the distribution of forest specialist species in the understorey of 55 forests in Dutch IJsselmeer polders to the following forest characteristics: age, area, connectivity, distance to mainland (as a proxy for distance to seed source) and path density. We used species of the Fraxino‐Ulmetum association for the Netherlands as reference for species that could potentially occur in the study area. Results: Area and age of the surveyed forests explained a large part of the variation in overall species composition and species number of forest plant species. The importance of connectivity and distance to the mainland of forest habitats became apparent only at a more detailed level of dispersal groups and individual species. The importance of forest parameters differed between dispersal groups and also between individual species. After 60 years, 75% of the potential pool of wind‐dispersed species has reached the polders, whereas this was only 50% for species lacking specific adaptations to long‐distance dispersal. However, the average percentage of successful colonizing species present per forest was substantially lower, ranging from 15 to 37%. Conclusions: The data strongly suggest that the colonization process in polder forests is still in its initial phase, during which easily dispersed species dominate the vegetation. Colonization success of common species that lack adaptations to long‐distance dispersal is affected by spatial configuration of the forests, and most rare species that could potentially occur in these forests are still absent. Implications for conservation of rare species in fragmented landscapes are discussed. 相似文献

The ripening of strawberry (Fragaria ananassa Duch.), a non-climacteric fruit, is a complex developmental process that involves many changes in gene expression. To understand
how these changes relate to the biochemistry and composition of the fruit the specific genes involved have been examined.
A high-quality cDNA library prepared from ripe strawberry fruit was differentially screened for ripening-related clones using
cDNA from ripe and white fruits. From 112 up-regulated clones obtained in the primary screen, 66 differentially expressed
clones were isolated from the secondary screen. The partial sequences of these cDNAs were compared with database sequences
and 26 families of non-redundant clones were identified. Northern analysis confirmed that all of these cDNAs were ripening-enhanced.
The expression of many of their corresponding genes was negatively regulated in auxin-treated fruit. These sequences, several
of which are novel to fruits, encode proteins involved in key metabolic events including anthocyanin biosynthesis, cell wall
degradation, sucrose and lipid metabolism, protein synthesis and degradation, and respiration. These findings are discussed
in relation to the role of these genes in determining fruit quality characteristics.

Conservation strategies for whole communities at the landscape scale have rarely been able to take into account genetic diversity
because of the number of species involved. However, if species can be grouped together by geographic distribution of genetic
diversity and patterns of relatedness, then landscape and genetic conservation might be more effectively combined to cope
with problems of fragmentation. We report on a study that measures how genetic diversity is distributed at national and regional
scales in four unrelated species of calcareous grassland insects. Samples were obtained from sites within six UK calcareous
grassland regions. Genetic diversity was measured using mtDNA sequencing (four species) and allozyme analysis (two of the
four species). A striking difference in mtDNA diversity was found between the chrysomelid beetle Aphthona herbigrada (23 haplotypes; mean per region 5.5) and the cicadellid bug Batracomorphus irroratus (27 haplotypes; mean per region 6.2), with high haplotype richness, and the brown argus butterfly Aricia agestis (4 haplotypes; mean per region 1.7) and the cistus forester moth Adscita geryon (5 haplotypes; mean per region 2.4) with low. At the UK scale, patterns of diversity were species specific with no general
conservation strategy emerging for the community. However, there was little differentiation among regions and any splitting
into more than one management unit was not clearly justified, questioning whether distribution of genetic diversity should

Genetic differentiation within and between isolated Algerian subpopulations of Barbary macaques (Macaca sylvanus): evidence from microsatellites 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
This study of wild-living Algerian Barbary macaques ( Macaca sylvanus ) was designed to examine genetic variability in subpopulations isolated in residual forest patches, in an attempt to obtain data on the effects of habitat fragmentation. The wild population of this species (estimated at a maximum of 15 000) is vulnerable and this study therefore has direct relevance for conservation measures. Data from five microsatellite loci were analysed for 159 individuals from nine different groups living in four isolates in Algeria. Genetic polymorphism was found to be relatively high (4–12 alleles per locus) compared with other genetic markers used in previous studies of this species; mean expected heterozygosity was 65%. The four isolates are all genetically distinct ( F ST = 0; P < 0.001). Indeed, the results suggest that dispersal is limited even between some social groups within a single isolate. Genetic distances based on models not assuming stepwise mutation ( F ST and chord distance) gave very similar results and are highly correlated with geographical distances within one isolate but not between isolates. This may indicate that isolation by distance exerts a significant influence within an isolate but that genetic drift prevails between the four isolates. After allowing for variation in sample size, we found no evidence of reduced allelic diversity within small isolates that may have been separated for 250 years or more. The surviving population of Algerian Barbary macaques taken as a whole still shows marked variability in microsatellite alleles, but maintenance of genetic variability over the long term will surely require effective protection of all isolates. 相似文献

Many habitat patches in tropical landscapes have become less suitable for wildlife due to an increase in anthropogenic disturbances. An index of habitat suitability based on the ecological factors that collectively determine the suitability of an organism's habitat is important for conservation planning. However, a widely accepted and comprehensive multi-criteria habitat suitability index for umbrella species is still lacking, particularly in areas where information related to the biology and ecology of the species of interest is not available. Therefore we develop preliminary habitat maps and measure the degree of habitat suitability for large mammals, focusing on four umbrella species in the State of Selangor, Peninsular Malaysia: Panthera tigris jacksoni (Malayan tiger), Tapirus indicus (Malayan tapir), Helarctos malayanus malayanus (Malayan sun bear), and Rusa unicolor cambojensis (sambar deer). The former two are endangered and the latter two are vulnerable according to the IUCN Red List. The suitability of habitat patches for each species was measured across the entire study area as well as in nine wildlife protected areas by integrating GIS data and expert opinion. Expert opinions were used as the source of information regarding the stresses faced by the species because there was insufficient information available from ground surveys.We developed an index and maps of habitat suitability for each species, which were then integrated to represent a combined index (ranging from 0 to 27) and spatially explicit maps of the area's habitat suitability for large mammals. The average large mammal habitat suitability index value of the State of Selangor (9) indicates that many habitat patches have become unsuitable for such species. Of the nine wildlife protected areas, Fraser's Hill (22), Sungai Dusun (22), and Bukit Kutu (21) are very suitable; Klang Gate (20) and Templers Park (17) are suitable; and the remaining four are unsuitable for large mammals. We assume that this preliminary habitat suitability index and mapping are useful for conservation planning of wildlife habitats at both landscape and regional scales, as well as providing an initial foundation for revision by future research with significant new information. 相似文献

This study describes differences in species richness, diversity and composition of Carabidae in gradients from recently abandoned,
non-grazed fields over stages of overgrowth into forest on formerly agricultural land in a large, sandy outwash plain, south
Sweden. Totally 80 pitfall traps, (4 succession stages, each represented by 4 sites; 5 traps per site) installed on 29 March
2006 were emptied continuously until 1 November. Succession stages were: 7–10 y old fallows after cereals with thin and low
vegetation of small perennial and annual herbs (Ia), 7–10 y old fallows abandoned as lay with a rich plant cover of broad-leaved
grasses and herbs (Ib), 20–25 y old fallows with a shrub layer of colonising pine and narrow-leaved grasses (II), and ca 80 y
old pine stands planted on originally cultivated ground with a rich shrub layer but lacking herbaceous plants (III). A total
of 14,068 individuals of 71 carabid species were captured. Species richness was highest in stage Ib, whereas Shannon species
diversity was highest in Ia. Both species richness and diversity were lowest in III, sites II being intermediate. Total number
of individuals captured site−1 was low in III, being highest in Ib. Mean body weight and total dry mass of species, however, increased with succession stage.
Amara and Harpalus species were most common in Ia but important also in Ib, with large differences in species composition between the two stages.
These genera were almost lacking in III, where Carabus spp. and Pterostichus niger dominated. The share of Calathus was highest in II, where C. fuscipes played a dominating role. P. versicolor dominated in Ib, whereas P. lepidus was quite common in all non-forest stages. Duration and intensity of capturing activity necessary to find most species of
the sites are discussed. Many scarce or rare species in south Scandinavia were captured, mainly in Ib. Abandoned non-grazed
fields are important hibernating and breeding refuges for many carabids. Using extensive and non-expensive management this
ought to be considered as an additional alternative in environment conservation policy, which now usually recommends economically

Classical genetic studies have determined that the yellow fruit color in pepper is recessive to red in the locus y. We studied the relation of the y locus with the gene coding for capsanthin-capsorubin synthase (CCS) that synthesizes the red carotenoid pigments in the mature
fruit. Cosegregation of y and CCS in populations derived from crosses between plants bearing red×white and red×yellow fruits indicated the correspondence
of the two genes. We obtained indications for the occurrence of a deletion in the CCS gene in plants containing the recessive
y allele. This deletion did not contain the distal 220 bp of the 3′ end of the gene. We used the CCS gene to determine the
genotype of peppers with different fruit colors at the y locus. In BC1 segregants from a red×white cross, the red and peach-fruited progenies had the wild-type allele at the CCS locus, while the
orange, yellow and white-fruited progenies had the mutant allele. Screening orange-fruited cultivars with CCS as well as segregation
analysis of CCS in an additional red×white cross indicated two possible genotypes of the orange fruit color in this locus.

Carabid beetles and environmental parameters were investigated in 52 grassland sites with three replicate pitfall traps in each site and in the valley of the River Eider in Schleswig–Holstein (northern Germany) with 61 pitfall traps. Environmental parameters included water content of soil, sand content, organic matter content and pH. Ground beetle assemblages were derived by detrended correspondence analyses (DCA) and characterised by the specific environmental conditions as means for each assemblage. On the regional scale including all investigated sites of Schleswig–Holstein, five assemblages were differentiated. On the local scale including the investigated sites in the valley of the River Eider, three assemblages were found corresponding well with those found on the regional scale. Environmental conditions at the sites of the five assemblages were correlated with land use data, soil types, and water level stages provided by three maps of a geographic information system (GIS). The GIS maps were combined to develop smaller areas with land use, soil type and water level stage information. The characteristic environmental conditions were assigned to each area to derive the spatial distribution of the five ground beetle assemblages. Spatial prediction was correct for 65% of investigated sites. The potential area of each assemblage was estimated for the valley. The different grassland areas were evaluated as potential habitats for ground beetle species comparing total species richness with the regional species richness of each assemblage. The comparison shows that species richness in the evaluated assemblages is relatively low compared to the regional potential. 相似文献

The estimation of quantitative genetic parameters in wild populations is generally limited by the accuracy and completeness of the available pedigree information. Using relatedness at genomewide markers can potentially remove this limitation and lead to less biased and more precise estimates. We estimated heritability, maternal genetic effects and genetic correlations for body size traits in an unmanaged long‐term study population of Soay sheep on St Kilda using three increasingly complete and accurate estimates of relatedness: (i) Pedigree 1, using observation‐derived maternal links and microsatellite‐derived paternal links; (ii) Pedigree 2, using SNP‐derived assignment of both maternity and paternity; and (iii) whole‐genome relatedness at 37 037 autosomal SNPs. In initial analyses, heritability estimates were strikingly similar for all three methods, while standard errors were systematically lower in analyses based on Pedigree 2 and genomic relatedness. Genetic correlations were generally strong, differed little between the three estimates of relatedness and the standard errors declined only very slightly with improved relatedness information. When partitioning maternal effects into separate genetic and environmental components, maternal genetic effects found in juvenile traits increased substantially across the three relatedness estimates. Heritability declined compared to parallel models where only a maternal environment effect was fitted, suggesting that maternal genetic effects are confounded with direct genetic effects and that more accurate estimates of relatedness were better able to separate maternal genetic effects from direct genetic effects. We found that the heritability captured by SNP markers asymptoted at about half the SNPs available, suggesting that denser marker panels are not necessarily required for precise and unbiased heritability estimates. Finally, we present guidelines for the use of genomic relatedness in future quantitative genetics studies in natural populations. 相似文献

The Goodeidae is a family of endemic fish from central Mexico. Populations of several species are declining in the wild and two have been reported extinct; Skiffia francesae and Zoogoneticus tequila. Both species were native to just one locality in the Ameca basin. It is difficult to infer the causes of extinction, since limnological data from Teuchitlán prior to the extinction events are not available, and there are no replicate populations. As an alternative approach, we explored the potential links between key environmental variables and events of local extinction of any species in the two genera (four Skiffia spp. and two Zoogoneticus spp.). In 14 localities known to harbour populations of fish of at least one of the six focal species, we conducted limnological surveys in the rainy and in the dry season, and quantified population densities of endemic and introduced fish. In addition, we quantified the concentration of agricultural pollutants in water and mud samples taken from every locality in the dry season. We found that all the focal species face some conservation threat, but we also discovered an extremely small population of the reputedly extinct Zoogoneticus tequila; in contrast, Skiffia francesae was not found. Eutrophication and habitat fragmentation appear to be the main threats to the focal species, with habitat fragmentation exponentially reducing population size and driving populations into refuges where they face stochastic extinction. 相似文献

This study tests the hypothesis that high species richness in small-bodied mammals results from higher speciation rates than in clades composed of large-bodied individuals. A right-skewed pattern is evident in size distributions of all mammal groups tested. Gaps between 100 g bins expand smoothly for the global mammal database. Less diverse mammal clades composed of large-sized individuals originated at relatively large size. Mechanisms promoting isolation and higher speciation rates in small mammals include the environmental mosaic, low absolute energy needs, small home range size, stenotopy, and intraspecific competition. A decline in diversity for the smallest size category in some clades suggests there is a lower limit in homoiotherms of about 1.5–2 g, possibly related to high metabolic rate and high surface area to volume ratio. Mammal size diversity from young Canadian ecosystems (≤19,000 years BP) is right-skewed, and diversity of species per unit area is approximately the same as for North America. Diversity and size distributions for mammals and select animal groups from southern Minnesota follow expected right-skewed patterns, suggesting the inverse relationship of body size and speciation rate is universal for complex metazoans. Climate is a potent selective force in natural populations, yet the importance of adaptation in the response of plant species to past climate change has been questioned. As many species are unlikely to migrate fast enough to track the rapidly changing climate of the future, adaptation must play an increasingly important role in their response. In this paper we review recent work that has documented climate‐related genetic diversity within populations or on the microgeographical scale. We then describe studies that have looked at the potential evolutionary responses of plant populations to future climate change. We argue that in fragmented landscapes, rapid climate change has the potential to overwhelm the capacity for adaptation in many plant populations and dramatically alter their genetic composition. The consequences are likely to include unpredictable changes in the presence and abundance of species within communities and a reduction in their ability to resist and recover from further environmental perturbations, such as pest and disease outbreaks and extreme climatic events. Overall, a range‐wide increase in extinction risk is likely to result. We call for further research into understanding the causes and consequences of the maintenance and loss of climate‐related genetic diversity within populations. 相似文献

Alpha-enolases are ubiquitous cytoplasmic, glycolytic enzymes. In pathogenic bacteria, alpha-enolase doubles as a surface-displayed plasmin(ogen)-binder supporting virulence. The plasmin(ogen)-binding site was initially traced to the two C-terminal lysine residues. More recently, an internal nine-amino acid motif comprising residues 248 to 256 was identified with this function. We report the crystal structure of alpha-enolase from Streptococcus pneumoniae at 2.0A resolution, the first structure both of a plasminogen-binding and of an octameric alpha-enolase. While the dimer is structurally similar to other alpha-enolases, the octamer places the C-terminal lysine residues in an inaccessible, inter-dimer groove restricting the C-terminal lysine residues to a role in folding and oligomerization. The nine residue plasminogen-binding motif, by contrast, is exposed on the octamer surface revealing this as the primary site of interaction between alpha-enolase and plasminogen. 相似文献

Insect thermal tolerance shows a range of responses to thermal history depending on the duration and severity of exposure. However, few studies have investigated these effects under relatively modest temperature variation or the interactions between short‐ and longer‐term exposures. In the present study, using a full‐factorial design, 1 week‐long acclimation responses of critical thermal minimum (CTmin) and critical thermal maximum (CTmax) to temperatures of 20, 25 and 30 °C are investigated, as well as their interactions with short‐term (2 h) sub‐lethal temperature exposures to these same conditions (20, 25 and 30 °C), in two fruit fly species Ceratitis capitata (Wiedemann) and Ceratitis rosa Karsch from South Africa. Flies generally improve heat tolerance with high temperature acclimation and resist low temperatures better after acclimation to cooler conditions. However, in several cases, significant interaction effects are evident for CTmax and CTmin between short‐ and long‐term temperature treatments. Furthermore, to better comprehend the flies' responses to natural microclimate conditions, the effects of variation in heating and cooling rates on CTmax and CTmin are explored. Slower heating rates result in higher CTmax, whereas slower cooling rates elicit lower CTmin, although more variation is detected in CTmin than in CTmax (approximately 1.2 versus 0.5 °C). Critical thermal limits estimated under conditions that most closely approximate natural diurnal temperature fluctuations (rate: 0.06 °C min?1) indicate a CTmax of approximately 42 °C and a CTmin of approximately 6 °C for these species in the wild, although some variation between these species has been found previously in CTmax. In conclusion, the results suggest critical thermal limits of adult fruit flies are moderated by temperature variation at both short and long time scales and may comprise both reversible and irreversible components. 相似文献

Introduced species usually fail to establish, but when they succeed, may undergo character release and rapid evolutionary divergence in novel environments. We collected brown anoles (Anolis sagrei: Lacertilia: Iguanidae) from a single Florida population and released them onto two ecologically different dredge-spoil islands in central Florida (forested and non-forested) and measured differences in population growth, individual growth, body size, and condition over four years. The population on the non-forested island expanded twice as fast as the forested island population and reached a density of ca. 12,000 lizards ha–1 and a biomass of ca. 43.3 kg ha–1, among the largest values recorded for non-aggregated terrestrial vertebrates. First-year progeny grew larger than their surviving parents on both islands, indicating character release occurred in early stages of both invasions. However, in subsequent years, lizards became larger on the forested island, but smaller on the non-forested island. Body condition declined over time on both islands, but the effect was most dramatic on the non-forested island. Lizards on the forested island had the lowest survival rates and highest tail autotomy frequencies. These results were attributed to differences in abiotic and biotic conditions on the two islands. Brown anoles are generally larger on islands where they have been introduced than on their native Caribbean islands, and are much larger on mainlands than on islands, indicating character release occurred at larger geographic scales as well. Habitat influences the morphology of introduced species possessing the ability to rapidly adapt to local conditions, presenting invasive species managers with moving targets. 相似文献

Evidence for an association between chromosomal form and development time in the grasshopper Caledia captiva (F.) was obtained through comparison of two geographic taxa and analysis of a complex latitudinal cline within one of the taxa. Northern populations of the Moreton taxon possess a metacentric genome and are slow-developing. In contrast, the Torresian taxon, distributed throughout northern, coastal Australia, a region of pronounced seasonality in rainfall, and southern populations of the Moreton taxon, which inhabit a region of pronounced seasonality in temperature, Soth have an acrocentric genome and are fast-developing. The convergence of chromosomal form and development time between Torresian and southern Moreton populations appears to be driven by convergence in life history. Seasonality limits grasshoppers to one generation per year and favours fast development. The transition between relatively acrocentric southern Moreton populations and relatively metacentric northern Moreton populations is gradual but not monotonic. Instead, a shift to a bivoltine life history in the middle of the transect occurs and is associated with shifts in both development time and chromosomal form. These results imply an adaptive role for chromosomal form, although the causative link between chromosomal variation and variation in development time remains to be established. 相似文献

Wing and body lengths of polyphagous parasitoids of leafminers are analyzed in order to understand the relationship between host and parasitoid sizes. A distinct positive relationship was observed: within each parasitoid species, smaller individuals were reared from smaller hosts. A high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) method to determine malondialdehyde (MDA) as the 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine (DNPH) derivative was applied to biological samples (serum and liver homogenates). Since MDA is considered a presumptive biomarker for lipid peroxidation in live organisms, a model for nutritionally induced oxidative stress (hypercholesterolemic rats) was studied in comparison with normocholesterolemic animals. The effect of diet supplementation with fruits rich in antioxidant polyphenols was assessed. The proposed method showed to be precise and reproducible, as well as sensitive enough to reflect differences in the oxidative status in vivo. A significant decrease of serum and liver MDA concentrations in animals fed diets containing 0.3% of polyphenols from strawberry, cocoa or plum was observed in the normocholesterolemic groups. This reduction was especially noteworthy in the hypercholesterolemic animals, with increased MDA levels indicating enhanced lipid peroxidation in the controls, yet with values parallel to the normocholesterolemic groups in animals fed the polyphenol-rich diets. These results point out the beneficial effects of phenolic antioxidants from fruits in preventing oxidative damage in vivo. 相似文献
