At five coastal silty sediment stations ranging in depth from 8 to 30 m, the abundance and composition of meiofauna were investigated. Three methods of sampling were used, i.e. Pfleger corer, Van Veen grab and SCUBA divers. Four samples per station were taken. The mean density of total meiofauna was 660 ± 109 ind. 10 cm2. The main meiofauna group was Nematoda, the second abundant was Copepoda, and third was Kinorhyncha. Statistical tests showed significant differences in meiofaunal abundance between corer and grab samples, and between corer and divers samples.Differences in meiofauna abundance between stations were found.  相似文献

The composition and distribution of the benthic meiofauna assemblages of the Egyptian coasts along the Red Sea are described in relation to abiotic variables. Sediment samples were collected seasonally from three stations chosen along the Red Sea to observe the meiofaunal community structure, its temporal distribution and vertical fluctuation in relation to environmental conditions of the Red Sea marine ecosystem. The temperature, salinity, pH, dissolved oxygen, and redox potential were measured at the time of collection. The water content of the sediments, total organic matters and chlorophyll a values were determined, and sediment samples were subjected to granulometric analysis. A total of 10 meiofauna taxa were identified, with the meiofauna being primarily represented by nematodes (on annual average from 42% to 84%), harpacticoids, polycheates and ostracodes; and the meiofauna abundances ranging from 41 to 167 ind./10 cm2. The meiofaunal population density fluctuated seasonally with a peak of 192.52 ind./10 cm2 during summer at station II. The vertical zonation in the distribution of meiofaunal community was significantly correlated with interstitial water, chlorophyll a and total organic matter values. The present study indicates the existence of the well diversified meiofaunal group which can serve as food for higher trophic levels in the Red Sea interstitial environment.  相似文献

Diurnal, seasonal and annual fluctuations of the meiofauna population density were recorded during long term investigations carried out in an inlet of the southwestern coast of the Baltic from 1970 to 1980. Field experiments have shown a diurnal vertical migration of harpacticoids, which leave the sediment at night to colonize the pelagic zone 14 times more densely than during day. Besides the seasonal fluctuations considerable differences were observed between the meiofauna densities in two successive years from samples taken twice in a grid consisting of 98 stations: the abundances of all meiofauna taxa decreased by approximately 50 %. These fluctuations are not only caused by the reproductive activities of the meiofauna under different environmental conditions, but they are to a great extent a result of the active and passive movements of the meiofauna.  相似文献

The metazoan meiofauna of nine stations in shelf break and upper slope areas (70 to 1500 m water depth) of the N.E. Atlantic were investigated in order to assess which environmental factors are important in the control of densities and sediment profiles. Total meiofaunal densities (ranging between 368 and 1523 ind/10 cm2) were correlated with bacterial densities, an important food source for meiofauna. However, considering sediment vertical distribution profiles, the relative importance of both food and oxygen on the meiofauna became obvious. A combination of both bacterial densities and oxygen supply could explain about 95% of the variability in the vertical profiles of the meiofauna densities. Meiofauna numbers increase in proportion to food availability in the surface sediment layers, but this relationship breaks down in deeper sediment layers where the oxygen supply is often limiting, particularly in fine sediments.  相似文献

The Gollum Channels and Whittard Canyon (NE Atlantic) are two areas that receive high input of organic matter and phytodetritus from euphotic layers, but they are typified by different trophic and hydrodynamic conditions. Sediment biogeochemistry was analysed in conjunction with structure and diversity of the nematode community and differences were tested between study areas, water depths (700 m vs 1000 m), stations, and sediment layers. The Gollum Channels and Whittard Canyon harboured high meiofauna abundances (1054-1426 ind. 10 cm(-2)) and high nematode diversity (total of 181 genera). Next to enhanced meiofauna abundance and nematode biomass, there were signs of high levels of organic matter deposition leading to reduced sedimentary conditions, which in turn structured the nematode community. Striking in this respect was the presence of large numbers of 'chemosynthetic' Astomonema nematodes (Astomonema southwardorum, Order Monhysterida, Family Siphonolaimidae). This genus lacks a mouth, buccal cavity and pharynx and possesses a rudimentary gut containing internal, symbiotic prokaryotes which have been recognised as sulphur-oxidising bacteria. Dominance of Astomonema may indicate the presence of reduced environments in the study areas, which is partially confirmed by the local biogeochemical environment. The nematode communities were mostly affected by sediment layer differences and concomitant trophic conditions rather than other spatial gradients related to study area, water depth or station differences, pointing to small-scale heterogeneity as the main source of variation in nematode structure and function. Furthermore, the positive relation between nematode standing stocks, and quantity and quality of the organic matter was stronger when hydrodynamic disturbance was greater. Analogically, this study also suggests that structural diversity can be positively correlated with trophic conditions and that this relation is tighter when hydrodynamic disturbance is greater.  相似文献

1. In this study, sediment chlorophyll profiles at twenty littoral stations in three oligo‐mesotrophic lakes were compared to test whether the vertical distribution of chlorophyll is related to site characteristics (light availability, temperature, physical disturbances) and whether these profiles differ between shallow and deep portions of the littoral zone.
2. The magnitude of chlorophyll peaks at the sediment surface did not vary with light intensity. Chlorophyll peaks in the shallow littoral zone had a weak tendency to decrease with increasing effective fetch. The magnitude of chlorophyll peaks at deeper sites was more closely related to water temperature than to substrate slope.
3. High chlorophyll concentrations were measured down to 1–3 cm in the sediments, both at shallow (< 2.5 m) and deep (4–10 m) stations. The depth to which high chlorophyll was found in sediments did not vary with effective fetch or sediment water content, two indices of wave disturbance in the shallow littoral zone, or with substrate slope, an index of sediment stability in the deep littoral zone. Sediment mixing is apparently not related to common indices of physical disturbances.
4. Between 8 and 100% of sediment surface chlorophyll was 'retained' 4–5 cm into the sediments. The proportion of chlorophyll 'retained' in littoral sediments increased with increasing depth, increasing lake productivity (total phosphorus concentration) and increasing lake pH.
5. Among‐core variability (standard error/mean) in chlorophyll concentration at the sediment surface ranged from less than 1% to 33% at different stations and was highest at shallow, exposed sites. These levels of variability are similar to those found in other periphytic communities.  相似文献

Burrow and tube structures of marine infauna were quantified in sediments from cores obtained at 3 depths (75, 95 and 118 m) at 3 occasions over a 1-year period. The benthic communities at the two deeper stations were re-establishing subsequent to re-oxygenation after hypoxic conditions; the shallow station was a reference station unaffected by hypoxia. The benthic macrofauna was simultaneously quantified from sieved grab samples. The sediment cores were frozen and later sliced with a plane in horizontal layers. Biogenic structures in these sections were digitally analysed for numbers, area and volume. Number of tubes and burrows showed a general decline with depth in the sediment. The biogenic structures in the sediment at the reference station increased the sediment-water interface about 1.5 times compared to the surface area. The surface areas of burrows and tubes were 2 to 3 times larger at the reference station than at the deeper stations. The benthic fauna at the 95-m and 118-m stations showed a temporal increase in density and number of species. In contrast, development of biogenic surface areas in the sediment at these stations showed no significant temporal trend during the benthic faunal succession. Relic tubes of Melinna cristata were found throughout the sampling period at the 118-m station. The ecological importance of bioirrigation for biogeochemical processes is discussed.  相似文献

Little is known about how climatic events (i.e., drought) inhibit or enhance movement of petroleum hydrocarbon laden sediments in estuarine systems and how this in turn effects the macrobenthic populations exposed to these sediments. Seventeen collection stations were established and monitored at New Bayou, Texas, a small gradient estuary which receives petroleum products via oil/gas field produced water discharge. Hydrographic, geologic and biotic samples were taken monthly from each station during a period of reduced rainfall. Both temperature and dissolved oxygen data taken during the study followed patterns typical for the area. Salinity values increased into the polyhaline range at near-bay stations during the reduced rain period, while upper bayou stations remained within the oligohaline range. Sediment grain sizes along the bayou were generally in the silty-clay range. Sediment hydrocarbon concentrations were highest (11.4 mg g−1 dry sediment) around the produced water discharge site and lowest at near-bay stations (0.2 mg g−1 dry sediment). Ninety-six macrobenthic species were collected during the study. General effects from produced water discharge on macrobenthic populations followed the classical pattern outlined by other research in shallow bay systems. A sediment hydrocarbon concentration of 2.5 mg g−1 dry sediment was found to reflect the average value needed to depress population abundances. Both abundance and diversity values were lowest at central stations near the discharge site. This zone of depressed macrobenthic populations extended from the discharge site at least 107 m downstream and 46 m upstream. The zone of stimulated macrobenthic populations occurred 1486 m downstream and 381 m upstream from the discharge site.  相似文献

Four seasonal sampling surveys were carried out between December 1985 and September 1986 in Canal de Mira (Ria de Aveiro, Portugal). A total of 40 sampling stations, distributed over 13 transects, was used. Salinity, temperature, dissolved oxygen and pH of the water mass were measured. Sediment temperature, and salinity and pH of interstitial water were determined. Sediment variables also included granulometric composition and organic matter contents. Bottom macrofauna samples were collected at each station. Ordination (PCA and MDS) and classification of the sampling stations were performed, using the physicochemical and the biological data sets separately. Average linkage cluster analysis using the unweighted paired-group method, arithmetic averages, was used for both sets of data. With a salinity range from 35.1‰ to 0.0‰, Canal de Mira behaves like a tidally and seasonally poikilohaline estuary. Water temperature (8.5–24.7°C) decreased along the channel towards its inner part during the cold season; an inverse and more pronounced trend was observed during the hot season. Dissolved oxygen contents was generally high during the day (50% to 240% saturation). Oversaturation was observed throughout the growing season, with peaks in areas with large amounts of rooted vegetation. The pH values, largely correlated with dissolved oxygen, ranged from 6.8 to 8.9. Four types of sediment were present in Canal de Mira, medium and muddy sands being dominant. Two major gradients were identified: (i) a typical longitudinal estuarine gradient, associated with distance from the mouth, representing physicochemical variables such as tidal amplitude, salinity and temperature; this gradient was accompanied by an upstream increase in dominance; the community composition changes were mainly related to salinity; (ii) a lateral gradient, related to current velocity, depth and sediment composition; the subtidal community had a comparatively low species richness and abundance. Groups of stations could be recognized along the environmental gradients. Benthic community changes, however, appeared to be gradual rather than marked by abrupt transitions.  相似文献

Summary Substantial numbers of predominantly O+ fish were impinged on the cooling water screens of Harculo, Gelderland, Merwedehaven and Amer power stations. Low numbers were impinged at the two stations located on the river Meuse (Maas and Claus). Two possible reasons for this difference are suggested,viz. a low fish density in the river Meuse and the deep position of the cooling water intakes. In comparison with Bergum power station situated on a lake the impingement rate at the river stations was more than ten times as low.Most fish were impinged during the summer months when large numbers of juvenile fish are present in the rivers. Dominating species impinged were roach, pikeperch, bream and perch. The abundance of pikeperch in the screensamples, points to a recent increase in the population of pikeperch in the rivers. The growth pattern of O+ pikeperch and O+ roach during summer seemed very similar for power stations located at different rivers. Thirty fish species and four crustacean species were collected, among whichOrconectus limosus was quite abundant at Maas and Claus power stations.  相似文献

Summary The distribution and abundance of shallow subtidal meiofauna in four habitats in the Niantic and Pettaquamscutt estuaries in southeastern New England were studied from October 1964 through October 1965. Numbers of individuals ranged from 1,184 to 5,163/10 cm2, and wet weights from 8.5 to 62.5 mg/10 cm2. Nematodes were the dominant group, averaging 83% of the total numbers and 64% of the total biomass. Among the nematodes, epigrowth-feeding species were dominant at all four stations; in addition, deposit-feeding species were abundant at three stations where the amount of detritus was high relative to the fourth station. At these three stations ostracods and deposit-feeding polychaetes were also abundant.Nematodes showed marked seasonal changes i their species composition, with epigrowth-feeding species reaching maximum densities in spring and summer (coincident with observed increases in benthic microflora production), and deposit and omnivorous-feeding species in fall and winter (coincident with observed increases in organic detritus). Increases in the epigrowth feeders were responsible for significant increases in the total nematode populations in spring and summer.Ostracods were most abundant in late summer, fall and winter in association with the increases in detritus. Polychaetes, amphipods and lamellibranchs were most abundant in summer, the first-named in association with elevated water temperatures. Harpactacoid copepods were inconsistent in their seasonal distributions.Approximately 80% of the meiofauna occurred in the upper 3 cm of sediment. Copepods and ostracods were virtually limited to the upper 3 cm, while amphipods and lamellibranchs were limited to the upper 2 cm of sediment. The recovery of bdellovibrios from estuarine sediments over an annual cycle was studied. Greater numbers of the predators were recovered in sediment than in the water column. Increases in the number of bdellovibrios recovered from sediment over various periods of time suggest that multiplication of the predators occurred. Sediment was observed to be an important ecosystem for the survival of bdellovibrios in the winter months. As has been observed in water, the number of bdellovibrios in sediment fluctuated, with seasonal and temperature changes declining to very low numbers during the winter months. In the colder months, low numbers of the predators appeared to winter-over in sediment, with greater numbers of the organisms being recovered from deeper sediment. As the water temperature warmed in the spring, increases in the number of bdellovibrios occurred first in sediment and subsequently in water. This increase of bdellovibrios in sediment may have resulted in the shedding of the organisms into the water column where their numbers subsequently increased. Population fluctuations of bdellovibrios were similar in both water and sediment. Although the temperature may account for much of the observed fluctuation in the number of bdellovibrios, other factors, including salinity and the number of host bacteria, may also play a major role. The number of bdellovibrios recovered from sediment correlated positively with the water temperature, and negatively with the water salinity and the number of bacterial colony-forming units from sediment. The results of this study revealed the significance of sediment to the seasonal cycle, survival, and growth of the bdellovibrios in an estuarine environment.  相似文献

Meiofauna are known to live on hard substrates in association with periphytic and epiphytic algae and attached epibiota; however, the abundance, diversity and colonizing abilities of hard-substrate meiofauna have been poorly documented. We quantified meiofauna living on microalgal-covered pilings associated with a wood pier in a shallow (<2 m deep) estuarine embayment with the use of a suction sampler, and compared colonization of pier-piling and sediment-dwelling meiofauna onto collectors that capture suspended meiofauna from the water column. Collectors were small mesh pads (159 cm3) suspended at mid-water depth, and their size and structural complexity were similar to floating or drifting masses of macroalgae that may be colonized by meiofauna. Sediment was collected by coring, and copepod (to species) and nematode (to genera) colonists on mesh pads were compared with pier-piling and sediment communities. Abundance of total meiofauna averaged 124±13.6 (S.E.) on pier pilings, compared to 2092±274.6 individuals 10 cm−2 in surrounding sediment. Phytal copepods (free-living copepods with prehensile first legs and dorsoventrally and laterally compressed body forms) and copepod nauplii dominated pier-piling collections, but nematodes were dominant on faunal collectors and in sediment. Phytal copepods also were abundant on faunal collectors but were rare in sediments. Copepod and nematode diversities were similar, but species composition was largely nonoverlapping, in pier pilings and sediments. Net recruitment of meiofauna to faunal collectors averaged about 900 individuals collector−1 day−1 during the 1-week experiment. Nematode and copepod colonists on faunal collectors were both much more similar to pier-piling than to sediment assemblages. These data suggest that meiofauna are abundant and diverse on algal-covered pier pilings, and they may become more important to marine ecology as artificial hard substrates increase with increasing urbanization. Furthermore, pier-piling meiofauna appear to readily migrate into the water column and probably contribute to a rapidly dispersing pool of meiofauna in estuaries.  相似文献

Longitudinal profiles of water quality along a well-mixed tidal river are, ideally, based on simultaneous measurements at fixed stations distributed along the river. The resolution of the profiles is limited by the density of the stations. However, for a given number of stations the resolution is greatly increased if water quality date can be extrapolated upstream and downstream of the stations, making use of velocity data; the resolution is then determined by the density of the extrapolated data points, which may be an order of magnitude higher than the density of the stations. A 15-km length of river was investigated using 5 current meters equipped to measure depth, temperature, conductivity and dissolved oxygen. Data were recorded simultaneously every 10 minutes. When the average cross-sectional speed was 0.25 ms−1 (typical of tidal conditions), the extrapolated data points were 150 m apart, so the resolution of the resulting profiles (7 per kilometre) was much higher than that of the stations alone (0.3 per kilometre). The extrapolation process required a means of deducing the average cross-sectional speed from the speed measured at a given station. The key to this was provided by temperature data recorded during the onset of a spate, when tidal flow was suspended and the average cross-sectional speed was uniformly about 0.75 ms −1 at four of the stations. Profiles of temperature and dissolved oxygen were generated by this method; the resolution was about 2 data points km−1 during the onset of the spate, and 6 points km−1 during tidal flow.  相似文献

Even when anthropogenically altered, river floodplains continue to contribute to biodiversity. This study examined the distribution of freshwater mussels in relation to environmental factors in waterbodies in the terrestrialized floodplain of a lowland river. Mussels were captured, and environmental measurements were taken in November of 2013 and 2014 in quadrats established in three floodplain waterbodies (FWBs), which were isolated from the main river channel. Among the three FWBs, mussel abundance was highest in a shallow FWB (depth range 18–45 cm) that had intermediate conditions of mud depth and fine sediment rate. Mussel abundance showed a hump-shaped relationship with water depth (the peak 45–50 cm) and mud depth (the peak 8–12 cm). Mussel abundance was also negatively related to the abundance of benthic litter. Litter abundance was positively related to branch abundance and the presence of tree cover, and negatively related to the distance to tree cover, indicating that benthic litter was derived from riparian trees. Our results indicate that relatively shallow (≤ 50 cm) FWBs with moderately accumulated mud, which are not scoured even during flooding, appear to be suitable habitats for mussels. Moreover, it is possible that riparian trees negatively impact mussel distribution in FWBs. Possible short-term measures for improving mussel habitat in FWBs may include the elimination of riparian trees and benthic litter.  相似文献

We investigated the effect of in-stream gravel extraction in a pre-alpine gravel-bed river on hyporheic invertebrate community, together with changes in the hyporheic geomorphology, physico-chemistry and biofilm activity. Hyporheic invertebrates were collected, together with environmental data, on seven sampling occasions from June 2004 to May 2005, at two river reaches—at the site of in-stream gravel extraction and at a site 2.5 km upstream. The hyporheic samples were taken from the river bed and from the gravel bars extending laterally from the stream channel. The invertebrate community was dominated by insect larvae (occasional hyporheos), followed by meiofauna (permanent hyporheos). Stygobionts were present at low species richness and in low densities. Gravel extraction from the stream channel led to changes in the patterns of water exchange between surface and subsurface and changes in the sediment composition at the site. Immediate reductions in density and taxonomic richness of invertebrates were observed, together with changes in their community composition. The hyporheic invertebrate community in the river recovered relatively fast (in 2.5 months) by means of density and taxonomic richness, while by means of community composition invertebrates needed 5–7 months to recover. The impact of fine sediments (<0.1 mm) on biofilm activity measured through ETS activity and hyporheic invertebrate density and taxonomic richness was strongly confirmed in this study.  相似文献

A field study was conducted in the Lower East Fork of the Little Miami River, a regulated stream in Clermont county, Ohio, to determine how changes in streamflow, water temperature and photo-period affect sediment microbial community structure. Surface sediment cores were collected from sampling stations spanning 60 river kilometers three to four times per year between October 1996 and October 1999. During the final year of the field study, water temperature, water depth, conductivity, total suspended solids, dissolved organic carbon, instantaneous streamflow velocity, sediment grain size and sediment organic matter were determined. Total microbial biomass was measured using the phospholipid phosphate technique (PLP) and ranged between 2 and 134 nmol PLP * g(-1) dry weight sediment with a mean of 25 nmol PLP * g(-1). Microbial community structure was determined using the phospholipid fatty acid analysis and indicated seasonal shifts in sedimentary microbial community composition. January to June sedimentary microbial biomass was predominately prokaryotic (60% +/- 2), whereas microeukaryotes dominated samples collected during the late summer (55% +/- 2.4) and fall (60% +/- 2). These changes were correlated with stream discharge and water temperature. Microbial community structure varied spatially about a reservoir with prokaryotic biomass dominant at upstream stations and eukaryotic biomass dominant at downstream stations. These findings reveal that sedimentary microbial communities in streams are dynamic responding to the seasonal variation of environmental factors.  相似文献

在野外通过用钢管在水泥池子中进行吊盆悬挂试验,研究了在1a生长周期内不同底质(软泥和黄土)、不同水深(30、60、90、120 cm和150 cm)对太湖马来眼子菜(Potamogeton malaianus Miq.)生长的影响,试图探询太湖马来眼子菜的最佳生长习性,为太湖进行沉水植物生态修复提供科学依据.结果表明:(1)水深对马来眼子菜的影响比底质的影响大.马来眼子菜的株长、生物量和分蘖数在不同的水深梯度呈显著性差异,而两种底质间却没有显著性差异.(2)马来眼子菜适合在水温为20~30℃的范围内快速生长.(3)马来眼子菜的最佳生长深度是60~120 cm.在60~120 cm的水深范围内马来眼子菜的分蘖数随着时间变化在缓慢增加,株长、株长增加量、相对生长速率和干重增加量均随水深的增加而增大,而水深较大或较小时马来眼子菜都会因为光照不足或者容易脱水等因素限制其生长和繁殖.(4)在经过冬季越冬期后马来眼子菜的营养生长能力下降,繁殖能力上升.  相似文献

There are two sewage outfalls along the Jordanian coastline in the Gulf of Aqaba. During 1982 and 1983 a total of 328 core samples (0.01 m2 to a depth of 15 cm) were collected from the two outfalls, two control stations which resemble the outfalls in depth and sediment texture, and from two stations 100 m on both sides of each outfall. Faunal analysis revealed that the total number of individuals, number of species, species richness, and faunal similarities of macrobenthic invertebrates were lower at the sewage outfall near the phosphate loading port than the control station during both collections. At the 100 m stations, the numbers of individuals were generally higher than the sewage and control stations. The number of species, however, was highest at the control station and lowest at the sewage outfall. At the other sewage outfall, where the sewage effluent is discharged sporadically, no measurable effects on macrobenthic invertebrates were found.  相似文献
