Dermal exposure to volatile compounds (VC) in municipal water while showering is typically estimated using a steady-state condition between VC in water impacting on skin and skin exposed to water. The lag times to achieve steady-state between VC and skin can vary in the range of 7.5–218.3 min, while shower duration is often less than these values. Estimates of dermal exposure to VC using steady-state while showering may misinterpret exposure. This study developed models and estimated exposure to some disinfection byproducts (DBPs) through dermal pathway by considering lag times while showering. Dermal uptakes of VC were compared using different approaches. In the proposed approach, uptakes of trihalomethanes were estimated between 9.55 × 10?10–1.43 × 10?8 mg/cm2 of skin during the lag times from exposure to water with trihalomethanes of 50 μg/L. These values were higher than the steady-state estimates (1.37 × 10?10–4.34 × 10?9 mg/cm2), and lower than the average exposure analysis (4.12 × 10-8–1.93 × 10?6 mg/cm2). Using the Drinking Water Surveillance Program data in Ontario, chronic daily intakes of trihalomethanes were estimated to be 9.40 × 10?7 (1.85 × 10?7–1.65 × 10?6), 3.89 × 10?6 (7.11 × 10?7–2.33 × 10?5), and 1.40 × 10?6 (4.0 × 10?7–1.77 × 10?6) mg/kg/day in Toronto, Ottawa, and Hamilton, respectively. The findings can be useful in understanding THMs exposure and risk through dermal pathway.  相似文献

Desalinated seawater is used to satisfy domestic water demands in many countries. The treated freshwater is blended with desalinated water to increase the water supply. The desalinated and blended water contains disinfection byproducts (DBPs), some of which may induce cancer risk to human. In this study, concentrations of trihalomethanes (THMs) in desalinated and blended water in Saudi Arabia were investigated, and human exposure and risk were predicted. The intakes of THMs (chloroform, bromodichloromethane, dibromochloromethane, and bromoform) were predicted to be 8.38 × 10?5, 7.57 × 10?5, 2.54 × 10?5, and 4.32 × 10?4 mg/kg-d, respectively. The overall cancer risk and hazard index were estimated to be 1.78 × 10?5 (range: 7.40 × 10?7–9.26 × 10?5) and 3.49 × 10?2 (range: 1.20 × 10?3–2.34 × 10?1), respectively. The probabilities of cancer risk exceeding the risk levels of 1 × 10?6, 1 × 10?5, and 5.0 × 10?5 were 1.0, 0.775, and 0.012, respectively. The loss of disability adjusted life years (DALYs) was predicted to be 25.1 per year while the cancer risk represented 8.48 × 10?7 DALY per person per year. The financial burden from such risk was estimated to be US$ 2.72 (range: US$ 2.52–2.91) million per year. The findings may assist in better understanding and reducing cancer risk from DBPs in desalinated and blended water.  相似文献

The effects of nitrogen (N) nutrition on growth, N uptake and leaf osmotic potential of rice plants (Oryza sativa L. ev. IR 36) during simulated water stress were determined. Twenty-one-day-old seedlings in high (28.6 × 10 ?4M) and low (7.14 × 10 4M) N levels were exposed to decreased nutrient solution water potentials by addition of polyethylene glycol 6000. The roots were separated from the solution by a semi-permeable membrane. Nutrient solution water potential was ?0.6 × 105 Pa and was lowered stepwise to ?1 × 105, ?2 × 105, ?4 × 105 and ?6 × 105 Pa at 2-day intervals. Plant height, leaf area and shoot dry weight of high and low nitrogen plants were reduced by lower osmotic potentials of the root medium. Osmotic stress caused greater shoot growth reduction in high N than in low N plants. Stressed and unstressed plants in 7.14 × 104M N had more root dry matter than the corresponding plants in 28.6 × 104M N. Dawn leaf water potential of stressed plants was 1 × 105 to 5.5 × 105 Pa lower than nutrient solution water potential. Nitrogen-deficient water-stressed plants, however, maintained higher dawn leaf water potential than high nitrogen water-stressed plants. It is suggested that this was due to higher root-to-shoot ratios of N deficient plants. The osmotic potentials of leaves at full turgor for control plants were about 1.3 × 105 Pa higher in 7.14 × 10?4M than in 28.6 × 10?4M N and osmotic adjustment of 2.6 × 105 and 4.3 × 105 Pa was obtained in low and high N plants, respectively. The nitrogen status of plants, therefore, affected the ability of the rice plant to adjust osmotically during water stress. Plant water stress decreased transpiration and total N content in shoots of both N treatments. Reduced shoot growth as a result of water stress caused the decrease in amount of water transpired. Transpiration and N uptake were significantly correlated. Our results show that nitrogen content is reduced in water-stressed plants by the integrated effects of plant water stress per se on accumulation of dry matter and transpiring leaf area as well as the often cited changes in soil physical properties of a drying root medium.  相似文献

Bisphenol A (BPA) [2,2-bis-(4-hydroxyphenyl) propane] is an important industrial agent, made by combining acetone and phenol, that is used extensively as a monomer in the production of polycarbonate plastics and as a precursor of epoxy resins. Micronucleus assays have served as an index of cytogenetic damage in in vivo and in vitro studies. We studied the genotoxic and cytotoxic effects of BPA on bovine peripheral lymphocytes in vitro. Lymphocyte cultures from two donors were exposed to four different concentrations of BPA (1?×?10?4, 1?×?10?5, 1?×?10?6, and 1?×?10?7 mol.L?1) for 48 h. The highest concentration of BPA (1?×?10?4 mol.L?1) resulted in a significant increase in the number of micronuclei in comparison with the negative control (67.50?±?2.121/1,000 binucleated cells versus 36.0?±?5.657/1,000 binucleated cells in the DMSO control, P??=??0.018). BPA did not affect the nuclear division index at any treatment concentrations. The charging of Al2O3 macroparticles with dimensions ranging from 20 to 40 μm in a gas flow passing through a multielectrode corona discharge is investigated. The corona discharge is produced by a system of wire electrodes arranged across the gas flow. The particle charge and mass are measured using a linear electrodynamic trap. For a corona voltage of 18 kV, the average charge-to-mass ratio is found to be 1.69 × 1013e/g for particles charged in the positive corona and 1.35 × 1013e/g for particles charged in the negative corona.  相似文献

Microsclerotia (MS) of Metarhizium brunneum strain F52 (Hypocreales: Clavicipitaceae) were processed as granules using three carriers: kaolin clay, microcrystalline cellulose (MCC), or diatomaceous earth (DE). In a series of experiments aimed at comparing viable conidial production, each MS carrier type was hydrated using a decreasing range of water activities on glycerol or polyethylene glycol (PEG200)-amended media. Conidial density and percent germination of conidia declined significantly as water activity was lowered. All three carrier types produced >2–6?×?109 viable conidia/gram at higher water activities (аw >0.987) but were still capable of producing 2.9?×?107?±?1.6?×?106 conidia/g (30% glycerol аw?=?0.883) and 1.9?×?107?±?6.5?×?106 conidia/g (30% PEG200 аw?=?0.924) at the lowest tested water activities. MS carrier types were sprayed onto 0.4?m length logs with or without hydromulch formulation. The median survival times of Asian longhorned beetles, Anoplophora glabripennis (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae), exposed by climbing double the length of the logs of hydromulch-treated bark, were 16.5–20.5?d while beetles exposed to logs without hydromulch formulation had median survival times of 22–25.5?d. The effect of hormone-like compounds at different concentrations: 2,4-D (2 × 10?6; 2 × 10?5; and 2 × 10?4M) and 1-NAA (2 × 10?7; 2 × 10?6; 2 × 10?5; 4 × 10?5, and 6 × 10?5 M) on the growth and production of phenolic compounds, including flavans and lignin, was investigated in callus culture of tea plant (Camellia sinensis L., a highly productive strain IFR ChS-2). The growth of the culture was vigorous, and production of phenolic compounds therein was efficient in the medium containing 2 × 10?5 M 2,4-D. Substitution of 1-NAA for 2,4-D in all the cases decelerated the growth of the culture. These changes were more pronounced when 2 × 10?7 and 2 × 10?6 M 1-NAA was used; in this case, biomass accumulation decreased by 1.5–2.0 times as compared with control material growing on the medium with 2 × 10?5 M 2,4-D. In the presence of 1-NAA, the content of total soluble phenolic compounds and flavans in the calli rose by 30% on the average as compared with control material. Accumulation of lignin remained essentially the same. Therefore, the replacement of 2,4-D with 1-NAA in the nutrient medium used for the growing of highly productive strain of tea plant callus did not induce considerable changes in its ability to produce phenolic compounds.  相似文献

The effects of sodium chloride concentration on the structure of chicken erythrocyte nucleosome core particles have been studied by the use of fluorescently labelled histones. Histone H3 was modified with two sulfhydryl-specific dyes and reconstituted into core nucleosomes. Between 10?4 m and 0.6 M-NaCl four different states were observed by the fluorescent techniques of collisional quenching, polarization and energy transfer. Below 5 × 10?4 m-NaCl the nucleosome is flexible, with the single cysteine residues of the two H3 species about 48 Å apart and somewhat exposed. Between 5 × 10?3 m and 10?1 m-NaCl the nucleosome is rigid and non-spherical. The cysteine residues are close together and buried. Between 10?1 m and 4 × 10?1 m-NaCl, the cysteines become slightly more exposed but remain close together. At 6 × 10?1 m-NaCl the nucleosome is very flexible. The cysteines are more than 70 Å apart and are quite exposed. The dramatic structural changes that are observed in core nucleosomes are consistent with the variety of functions in which they must participate in the cell.  相似文献

Cancer and non-cancer risk assessment from exposure to As, Cd, and Cu by resident adults and children from different water sources in Obuasi Municipality, Ghana, were measured in this study in accordance with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (USEPA's) Human Health Risk Assessment guidelines. The results of cancer health risk for resident adults in Obuasi exposed to As in their tap water for both Central Tendency Exposure (CTE) and Reasonable Maximum Exposure (RME) parameters, respectively, are 6.6 × 10?4 and 5.5 × 10?6. For resident children in Odumasi, we obtained 4.7 × 10?1 (CTE) and 6.7 × 10?1 (RME). The results of the study obtained in most cases were found to exceed the USEPA's acceptable cancer risk range of 1 × 10?6 to 1 × 10?4 (i.e., 1 case of cancer out of 1,000,000 people to 1 case of cancer out of 10,000 people). Similarly, the results of the non-cancer human health risk for both resident adults and children were also found in most cases to be greater than the USEPA's acceptable non-cancer human health hazard index of 1.  相似文献

Gmelina arborea L. seedling growth and diurnal stomatal opening (as measured by stomatal resistance) were studied at soil matric potential 0, -0.1 and -0.72 × 10?5 Pa. Leaf area, leaf number, plant height and dry weights of the vegetative parts were significantly reduced as soil matric potential decreased from 0 to -0.72 × 10?5 Pa. The growth responses followed the same trend as net assimilation rate and relative growth rate. The highest moisture stress induced leaf senescence and leaf fall. Leaf water potential decreased from - 2 × 10?5 Pa to - 20 × 10?5 Pa with increasing soil moisture stress. Results indicate that the diurnal stomatal opening is controlled by photon flux density when this species is grown at soil matrio potential 0 Pa. However, with decreasing soil matrio potential (- 0.10 and -0.72 × 10?5 Pa) the internal plant water deficit appears to oontrol the stomatal opening.  相似文献

Alkaline hydrolysis and subcritical water degradation were investigated as ex-situ remediation processes to treat explosive-contaminated soils from military training sites in South Korea. The addition of NaOH solution to the contaminated soils resulted in rapid degradation of the explosives. The degradation of explosives via alkaline hydrolysis was greatly enhanced at pH ≥12. Estimated pseudo-first-order rate constants for the alkaline hydrolysis of 2,4-dinitrotoluene (DNT), 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT) and hexahydro-1,3,5-trinitro-1,3,5-triazine (RDX) in contaminated soil at pH 13 were (9.6?±?0.1)×10?2, (2.2?±?0.1)×10?1, and (1.7?±?0.2)×10?2 min?1, respectively. In the case of subcritical water degradation, the three explosives were completely removed at 200–300°C due to oxidation at high temperatures and pressures. The degradation rate increased as temperature increased. The pseudo-first-order rate constants for DNT, TNT, and RDX at 300°C were (9.4?±?0.8)×10?2, (22.8?±?0.3)×10?2, and (16.4?±?1.0)×10?2, respectively. When the soil-to-water ratio was more than 1:5, the extent of alkaline hydrolysis and subcritical water degradation was significantly inhibited.  相似文献

Increase in body weight and adiposity has deleterious consequences on health. The aim of this study was to compare morphological and metabolic changes in the arterial vessels of Wistar rats with conditions of obesity, hypoestrogenism, and hypoestrogenism plus obesity. Ovariectomized rats (hypoestrogenic condition) received 30 % sugar in drinking water plus standard diet during 10 weeks. The hypoestrogenic-obese (HE-OB) group presented increase in weight, blood pressure, hypertriglyceridemia, and hyperglycemia compared with other groups. The morphological study in aortic vessels from HE showed damage in endothelial smooth muscle tissue compared with the other groups. Adipose cells volume in HE-OB (59.33?±?2.38 μ3?×?105) and obese (OB) (54.95?±?1.36 μ3?×?105) groups were significantly larger than control group (36.38?±?0.98 μ3?×?105). In the HE group adipocyte hyperplasia was observed, while in OB group adipocyte hypertrophy and hyperplasia was shown. The vascular reactivity in HE-OB and OB groups presented decrease in the relaxation to acetylcholine compared with control conditions (p?<?0.05), whereas the addition of NG-nitro-l-arginine methyl ester resulted in a greater inhibition of relaxation in HE-OB and OB groups compared with control conditions (p?<?0.05). Adult male C57BL mice were exposed to 75, 150, 300 or 450 R X-rays with or without pre-treatment with Adeturon (S-2-aminoethyl-isothiuronium bromide hydrobromide (AET) adenosine triphosphate, 500 mg/kg b.w.). In vitro cultures of Crithidia sp. were exposed to various concentrations of hydroxyurea (HU) during the logarithmic phase. In the presence of 5 × 10?2M HU, cell division was completely blocked after an initial increase in cell numbers by about 20%. Inhibition of incorporation of 3H-thymidine into acid-insoluble material was effective within 1 hr of exposure to the drug (5 × 10?2M) and it reached a level of 80% after 8 hr. At lower concentrations (5 × 10?4M ? 1 × 10?3M), however, incorporation of 3H-thymidine was remarkably increased while cell division remained unaffected indicating that the increase in incorporation was not due to increased DNA synthesis in preparation for cell division.  相似文献

Peripheral blood lymphocytes from unirradiated control subjects and workers exposed within permitted limits to γ-radiation, have been examined for the incidence of dicentric and acentric chromosome aberrations. The results are compared with a review of data published elsewhere. Background levels show inter-laboratory variation and possible reasons for this are discussed. By combining the present data with those from the literature the spontaneous incidence of dicentric aberrations is approx. 0.55 × 10?3 and for acentrics is 3.7 × 10?3. In occupationally exposed subjects a significantly higher incidence of aberrations was found. When allowance was made for the turnover of lymphocytes for the period over which each man had worked with radiation a linear dose-effect relationship was apparent. The incidence of dicentrics was 2.22 ± 0.94 × 10?4 rad?1 and for all unstable aberrations 8.24 ± 2.8 × 10?4 rad?1. The formaldehyde method was used to examine the interaction of PGE1 with morphine, β-endorphin and Met-enkephalin on rat mast cells by their effects on IgE-mediated 14C-serotonin release. PGE1 (2×10?8?2×10?5 M) caused a dose-related inhibition of the mediator release 1 min after an antigen challenge, and morphine (3×10?7?3×10?5 M) reversed this PGE1 effect dose-dependently and stereospecifically; naloxone (2×10?4 M) antagonized this action of morphine. β-Endorphin (3×10?7?10?5 M) and Met-enkephalin (3×10?6?10?4 M) mimicked this morphine action dose-dependently and were antagonized by naloxone (2×10?4 M). Mice were given 5 or 8 weekly injectins of either 2·0 × 106 or 20·0 × 106 irradiated T. cruzi from cell culture (ratio of trypomastigotes to amastigotes, 1 : 1) via the intraperitoneal route or via the subcutaneous route and challenged via the subcutaneous route one week after the last injection with 5·0 × 104T. cruzi in mouse blood. The irradiated parasites used were not capable of producing infections in either Vero cell cultures or C3H mice. Mice receiving irradiated parasites were significantly protected against the challenge infection as evidenced by significantly lower mean parasitemia, lessened signs of acute disease, and reduced mortality than that observed in untreated controls. Mice receiving 5 weekly immunizing injections of irradiated parasites were more resistant to challenge than those receiving 3 in previous work. Mice receiving 8 weekly immunizing injections were not significantly more protected against challenge than those receiving 5. Mice given 5 weekly injections of 20·0 × 106 irradiated parasites were significantly more resistant to challenge than those receiving 2·0 × 106 irradiated parasites on the same schedule. Mice given 5 weekly intraperitoneal injections of 20·0 × 106 irradiated parasites were significantly more resistant to challenge than those receiving an equivalent number of immunizing injections via the subcutaneous route.  相似文献

Microsclerotia of the entomopathogenic fungus (Metarhizium brunneum Petch strain F52; Hypocreales: Clavicipitaceae) were sprayed in a hydromulch formulation onto wood samples to test persistence and biological control efficacy when exposed on forest and orchard trees. The density of viable conidia and retention of hydromulch were not significantly affected by the tackifier in the formulation (psyllium, xanthan, or a mixture of both). Forest samples had a maximum conidial density and more viable conidia (7.2 × 105 conidia cm?2) than orchard samples (1.4 × 105 conidia cm?2). Increased rainfall, temperature and the time that samples were outdoors were critical factors for conidial density. Asian longhorned beetles [Anoplophora glabripennis (Motschulsky); Coleoptera: Cerambycidae] exposed to orchard samples in laboratory bioassays did not have significantly less mortality compared to forest samples, indicating that hydromulch may be feasible in open sunny conditions, if sufficient moisture is present.  相似文献

A series of experiments were carried out in order to elucidate whether acetylsalicylic acid (ASA) fed via petioles to beans could affect transpiration rate. In comparison with the water control it was found that a 10?3M ASA reduces transpiration as much as 43%, a reduction equivalent to 5 × 10?5M abscisic acid (ABA). Preliminary kinetics on the ABA, ASA and the water control on transpiration rate are presented and the results discussed.  相似文献

Different amounts of abscisic acid, 2.7 × 10?9? 5 × 10?8 moles, were chromatographed in isopropanol: ammonia: water (100:14:6), firstly alone and secondly together with 5 × 10?8 moles kinetin. The same amount of kinetin was also chromatographed alone. The chromatograms were tested biologically with the Avena straight-growth test. Whereas a large part of the chromatograms of kinetin gives growth stimulation, the Rf region 0.4–0.6 of abscisic acid chromatograms is strongly growth-inhibiting. The inhibition within this Rf region does not become less if abscisic acid and kinetin are chromatographed together.  相似文献
