Background

Evidence for a possible causal relationship between exposure to electromagnetic fields (EMF) emitted by high voltage transmission (HVT) lines and neurobehavioral dysfunction in children is insufficient. The present study aims to investigate the association between EMF exposure from HVT lines and neurobehavioral function in children.

Methods

Two primary schools were chosen based on monitoring data of ambient electromagnetic radiation. A cross-sectional study with 437 children (9 to 13 years old) was conducted. Exposure to EMF from HVT lines was monitored at each school. Information was collected on possible confounders and relevant exposure predictors using standardized questionnaires. Neurobehavioral function in children was evaluated using established computerized neurobehavioral tests. Data was analyzed using multivariable regression models adjusted for relevant confounders.

Results

After controlling for potential confounding factors, multivariable regression revealed that children attending a school near 500 kV HVT lines had poorer performance on the computerized neurobehavioral tests for Visual Retention and Pursuit Aiming compared to children attending a school that was not in close proximity to HVT lines.

Conclusions

The results suggest long-term low-level exposure to EMF from HVT lines might have a negative impact on neurobehavioral function in children. However, because of differences in results only for two of four tests achieved statistical significance and potential limitations, more studies are needed to explore the effects of exposure to extremely low frequency EMF on neurobehavioral function and development in children.  相似文献

Voltage-gated ion channels in neuronal membranes fluctuate randomly between different conformational states due to thermal agitation. Fluctuations between conducting and nonconducting states give rise to noisy membrane currents and subthreshold voltage fluctuations and may contribute to variability in spike timing. Here we study subthreshold voltage fluctuations due to active voltage-gated Na+ and K+ channels as predicted by two commonly used kinetic schemes: the Mainen et al. (1995) (MJHS) kinetic scheme, which has been used to model dendritic channels in cortical neurons, and the classical Hodgkin-Huxley (1952) (HH) kinetic scheme for the squid giant axon. We compute the magnitudes, amplitude distributions, and power spectral densities of the voltage noise in isopotential membrane patches predicted by these kinetic schemes. For both schemes, noise magnitudes increase rapidly with depolarization from rest. Noise is larger for smaller patch areas but is smaller for increased model temperatures. We contrast the results from Monte Carlo simulations of the stochastic nonlinear kinetic schemes with analytical, closed-form expressions derived using passive and quasi-active linear approximations to the kinetic schemes. For all subthreshold voltage ranges, the quasi-active linearized approximation is accurate within 8% and may thus be used in large-scale simulations of realistic neuronal geometries.  相似文献

目的:探讨不同剂量环磷酰胺对小鼠肿瘤成模情况的影响,寻找一种简单、有效的建立肿瘤模型的预处理方法。方法:给予BALB/c裸鼠腹腔注射不同剂量环磷酰胺,72小时后再给予小鼠皮下接种淋巴瘤细胞,观察预处理前后小鼠外周血白细胞数量及体重变化情况,以及肿瘤成模率、急性死亡率等。结果:①组1(NS对照组)、组2(100mg/kg×1d)、组3(125mg/kg×1d)、组4(75mg/kg×2d)预处理后体重较处理前无显著性变化,亦无急性死亡情况发生;而组5(125mg/kg×2d)、组6(200mg/kg×2d)、组7(125mg/kg×3d)、组8(250mg/kg×3d)小鼠体重较预处理前明显减轻,且急性死亡率依次为30%、58.3%、50%、75%;②组1和组2小鼠预处理后72小时外周血白细胞数较处理前无明显差异,同时均未成模;而组3、组4、组5、组6、组7、组8小鼠白细胞较预处理前均显著下降,成模率依次为20%、83.3%、60%、33.3%、50%、25%。结论:使用环磷酰胺75mg/kg连续2天腹腔注射的预处理方案,操作简单,成本低廉,通过观察外周血白细胞数和小鼠体重水平等指标即可初步判断建模情况,同时肿瘤成模率高,毒副作用小,是理想的预处理方案。  相似文献

Modelling studies of upper ocean phenomena, such as that of the spatial and temporal patchiness in plankton distributions, typically employ coupled biophysical models, with biology in each grid-cell represented by a plankton ecosystem model. It has not generally been considered what impact the choice of grid-cell ecosystem model, from the many developed in the literature, might have upon the results of such a study. We use the methods of synchronisation theory, which is concerned with ensembles of interacting oscillators, to address this question, considering the simplest possible case of a chain of identically represented interacting plankton grid-cells. It is shown that the ability of the system to exhibit stably homogeneous (fully synchronised) dynamics depends crucially upon the choice of biological model and number of grid-cells, with dynamics changing dramatically at a threshold strength of mixing between grid-cells. Consequently, for modelling studies of the ocean the resolution chosen, and therefore number of grid-cells used, could drastically alter the emergent features of the model. It is shown that chaotic ecosystem dynamics, in particular, should be used with care.  相似文献

Metolazone is a modified quinazolinesulphonamide and in a dose of between 4 and 7·5 mg is an effective diuretic in man with normal renal function. Fourteen patients with non-oedematous stable chronic renal failure (creatinine clearance ranging from 1·2 to 12 ml/min) were given metolazone in doses ranging from 20-150 mg. A noticeable increase in urine flow and sodium excretion occurred, free water clearance increased, and there was a small but significant increase in potassium excretion. Spontaneously transformed mouse cell lines heterozygous for electrophoretic markers have been studied to determine the relationship between gene dosage and phenotype. It is shown that a clone with an electrophoretic pattern for glucosephosphate isomerase of three bands in a ratio of 4A:4AB:1B contains three copies of chromosome 7, which carries the gene for this enzyme. A clone from a different line with a pattern of three bands in a ratio of 1A:6AB:9B for NADP-isocitrate dehydrogenase has four copies of the chromosome carrying this gene or three copies plus a rearrangement which apparently involves this chromosome. These results show that all of the alleles for each enzyme are expressed to an equal extent in these cells.  相似文献

The estimation of human circadian rhythms from experimental data is complicated by the presence of “masking” effects associated with the sleep-wake cycle. The observed rhythm may include a component due to masking, as well as the endogenous component linked to a circadian pacemaker. In situations where the relationship between the sleep-wake cycle and the circadian rhythm is not constant, it may be possible to obtain individual estimates of these two components, but methods commonly used for the estimation of circadian rhythms, such as the cosinor analysis, spectral analysis, average waveforms and complex demodulation, have not generally been adapted to identify the modulations that arise from masking. The estimates relate to the observed rhythms, and the amplitudes and acrophases do not necessarily refer to the endogenous rhythm.

In this paper methods are discussed for the separation of circadian and masking effects using regression models that incorporate a sinusoidal circadian variation together with functions of time since sleep and time during sleep. The basic model can be extended to include a time-varying circadian rhythm and estimates are available for the amplitude and phase at a given time, together with their joint confidence intervals and tests for changes in amplitude and acrophase between any two selected times. Modifications of these procedures are discussed to allow for non-sinusoidal circadian rhythms, non-additivity of the circadian and time-since-sleep effects and the breakdown of the usual assumptions concerning the residual errors.

This approach enables systematic masking effects associated with the sleep-wake cycle to be separated from the circadian rhythm, and it has applications to the analysis of data from experiments where the sleep-wake cycle is not synchronized with the circadian rhythm, for example after time-zone transitions or during irregular schedules of work and rest.  相似文献

Lactococcus lactis MG1363 was found to be unable to grow at temperatures above 37°C in a defined medium without riboflavin, and the cause was identified to be dissolved oxygen introduced during preparation of the medium. At 30°C, growth was unaffected by dissolved oxygen and oxygen was consumed quickly. Raising the temperature to 37°C resulted in severe growth inhibition and only slow removal of dissolved oxygen. Under these conditions, an abnormally low intracellular ratio of [ATP] to [ADP] (1.4) was found (normally around 5), which indicates that the cells are energy limited. By adding riboflavin to the medium, it was possible to improve growth and oxygen consumption at 37°C, and this also normalized the [ATP]-to-[ADP] ratio. A codon-optimized redox-sensitive green fluorescent protein (GFP) was introduced into L. lactis and revealed a more oxidized cytoplasm at 37°C than at 30°C. These results indicate that L. lactis suffers from heat-induced oxidative stress at increased temperatures. A decrease in intracellular flavin adenine dinucleotide (FAD), which is derived from riboflavin, was observed with increasing growth temperature, but the presence of riboflavin made the decrease smaller. The drop was accompanied by a decrease in NADH oxidase and pyruvate dehydrogenase activities, both of which depend on FAD as a cofactor. By overexpressing the riboflavin transporter, it was possible to improve FAD biosynthesis, which resulted in increased NADH oxidase and pyruvate dehydrogenase activities and improved fitness at high temperatures in the presence of oxygen.  相似文献
