The relationship between radiofrequency electromagnetic fields emitted from mobile phone and infertility is a matter of continuing debate. It is postulated that these radiations may affect the reproduction pattern spell by targeting biochemistry of sperm. In an attempt to expedite the issue, 70 days old Wistar rats (n = 6) were exposed to mobile phone radiofrequency (RF) radiation for 2 h per day for 45 days and data compared with sham exposed (n = 6) group. A significant decrease (P < 0.05) in the level of testosterone and an increase in caspase-3 activity were found in the RF-exposed animals. Distortions in sperm head and mid piece of sperm mitochondrial sheath were also observed as captured by Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM). In addition, progeny from RF-exposed rats showed significant decreases in number and weight as compared with that of sham-exposed animals. A reduction in testosterone, an increase in caspase-3, and distortion in spermatozoa could be caused by overproduction of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in animals under mobile phone radiation exposure. Our findings on these biomarkers are clear indications of possible health implications of repeated exposure to mobile phone radiation.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to explore the prevalence, nature and determinants of concerns about mobile phone radiation. We used data from a 2006 telephone survey of 1004 people aged 15+ years in Denmark. Twenty‐eight percent of the respondents were concerned about exposure to mobile phone radiation; radiation from masts was of concern to about 15%. In contrast, 82% were concerned about pollution. Nearly half of the respondents considered the mortality risk of 3G phones and masts to be of the same order of magnitude as being struck by lightning (0.1 fatalities per million people per year) while 7% thought it was equivalent to tobacco‐induced lung cancer (~500 fatalities per million per year). Among women, concerns about mobile phone radiation were positively associated with educational attainment, perceived mobile phone mortality risk and concerns about unknown consequences of new technologies. More than two thirds of the respondents felt that they had received inadequate public information about the 3G system. The results of the study indicate that the majority of the population has little concern about mobile phone radiation while a small minority is very concerned. Chemical signals are used as information by prey to assess predation risk in their environment. To evaluate the effects of multiple predators on prey growth, mediated by a change in prey activity, I exposed small and large bullfrog (Rana catesbeiana) larvae (tadpoles) to chemical cues from different combinations of bluegill sunfish (Lepomis macrochirus) and larval dragonfly (Anax junius) predators. Water was regularly transferred from predation trials (outdoor experiment) to aquaria (indoor experiment) in which activity and growth of tadpoles was measured. The highest predation mortality of small bullfrog larvae in the outdoor experiment was due to Anax, and it was slightly lower in the presence of both predators, probably resulting from interactions between predators. There was almost no mortality of prey with bluegill. The activity and growth of small bullfrog larvae was highest in the absence of predators and lowest in the presence of Anax. In the presence of bluegill only, or with both predators, the activity and growth of small bullfrog tadpoles was intermediate. Predators did not affect large tadpole activity and growth. Regressing mortality of small bullfrog tadpoles against activity and growth of bullfrog tadpoles revealed a significant effect for small bullfrog larvae but a non-significant effect for large bullfrog larvae. This shows that the response of bullfrog tadpoles to predators is related to their own body size. The experiment demonstrates that chemical cues are released both as predator odor and as alarm substances and both have the potential to strongly alter the activity and growth of prey. Ultraviolet radiation has been suggested as a possible contributing cause of amphibian declines around the world. Both laboratory and field studies have demonstrated that exposure to ultraviolet radiation can lead to increased mortality of developing amphibians. Virtually no studies have examined the sub‐lethal effects of ultraviolet on amphibian behavior. In this study, we examine the anti‐predator behavior of three species of amphibians after short‐term exposure to ultraviolet‐B radiation. Toad (Bufo boreas) juveniles that had been exposed to ultraviolet radiation did not respond to chemical extracts from conspecifics and heterospecifics as much as juveniles that had not been exposed. Both newt larvae (Taricha granulosa) that had been exposed to ultraviolet radiation and those that had not been exposed responded to chemical cues from conspecific predators by increasing the amount of time spent in shelter. Frog tadpoles (Rana cascadae) that had been exposed to ultraviolet radiation did not reduce their movement in response to chemical cues from predators as much as tadpoles that had not been exposed. These results indicate that ultraviolet exposure may have important sub‐lethal effects in amphibians that could adversely effect their fitness.  相似文献

The presence of environmental contaminants may alter predator-prey interactions among aquatic species by altering activity levels of predators or prey, or by altering predator avoidance behavior. The outcome of a predatory encounter may be dependent upon whether both species are exposed to a contaminant simultaneously, or whether exposure occurs only in one of the species. In a laboratory experiment, I used the insecticide carbaryl to examine predation of southern leopard frog tadpoles (Rana sphenocephala) by adult red-spotted newts (Notophthalmus viridescens) under four conditions: both tadpoles and newts exposed, neither tadpoles nor newts exposed, and either newts or tadpoles only exposed. After one hour, exposed newts consumed half as many tadpoles as non-exposed newts. Carbaryl potentially affected newt activity enough to reduce time spent searching for prey, or may have altered the speed and coordination necessary to capture tadpoles. After six hours, non-exposed and exposed newts consumed similar numbers of tadpoles, most likely indicating recovery from exposure. After 24 h, predation rates were lowest when both newts and tadpoles were simultaneously either exposed or not exposed, and were greatest when newts and tadpoles were not exposed simultaneously. This study suggests that when tadpoles and newts are exposed to a sublethal level of a contaminant simultaneously, that predation rates do not differ from those observed under natural conditions, but exposure of either predator or prey at different times can disrupt predator-prey dynamics. The invasion of cane toads (Bufo marinus) across tropical Australia has fatally poisoned many native predators; the most frequent victims may be tadpoles of native frogs, which die when they consume the toxic eggs of the toads. Field studies have documented high and species‐specific mortality of tadpoles following toad spawning. To clarify the determinants of tadpole vulnerability, we conducted 1593 laboratory trials in which single tadpoles were exposed to 10 toad eggs, either with or without an alternative food source (lettuce). At least some tadpoles within all 15 species tested consumed toad eggs. Interspecific variance in survival rates (from 0 to >70%) was driven by feeding responses not by physiological tolerance to toxins: almost all native tadpoles that consumed eggs died rapidly. Tadpole mortality was decreased by the presence of an alternative food source in four species, increased in two species, and not affected in seven species. In three of four taxa where we tested both small (early‐stage) and large (late‐stage) tadpoles, both mean survival rates and the effects of alternative food on survival shifted with tadpole body size. Trials with one species (Limnodynastes convexiusculus) showed no significant inter‐clutch variation in feeding responses or tolerance to toxins. Overall, our data show that cane toad eggs are highly toxic to native anuran tadpoles, but that whether or not a tadpole is killed by encountering toad eggs depends upon a complex interaction between the native anuran's species, its body size, and whether or not alternative food was present. In nature, larval vulnerability also depends upon the seasonal timing and location of spawning events, and habitat selection and foraging patterns of the tadpoles. Our results highlight the complexity of vulnerability determinants, and identify ecological factors (rather than physiology or feeding behaviour) as the primary determinants of cane toad impact on native tadpoles.  相似文献

Summary The effects of density on growth and development of Scaphiopus couchi tadpoles in desert ponds were investigated, and sources of mortality over a three-year period were documented. In 16 of the 82 ponds monitored, predation was the principal cause of death, demonstrating that tadpoles in desert ponds may be exposed to high levels of predation, although the overall importance of predation is less here than in more mesic areas. Desiccation was the primary cause of mortality in 49 ponds. Growth and development were extremely slow in most high density ponds and as a result most tadpoles were unable to metamorphose before ponds dried. Only 8 ponds produced metamorphs, and mortality was high even in these. Food-supplementation resulted in some metamorphosis in high density ponds, although the effect was diminished by the extreme crowding in most ponds. In low density ponds, S. couchi tadpoles can develop very quickly and metamorphose. High mortality due to desiccation is largely a consequence of high density: tadpoles rarely completed development in high density ponds, regardless of pond duration.  相似文献

When captured by predators, the tadpoles of some species of frogs and toads may release an alarm substance that alters the behaviour of conspecifics. Such ‘alarm response’ behaviour has been proposed as a potential mechanism whereby related conspecifics may ‘warn’ relatives of a predator's presence and thus, improve their inclusive fitness. We examined predator avoidance and alarm response behaviour in tadpoles of the Cascades frog (Rana cascadae) and tested whether such behaviour is influenced by kinship factors. Tadpoles reduced activity when in the presence of a predatory newt (Taricha granulosa). Individuals in sibling groups were more active than both solitary tadpoles and individuals in mixed groups of siblings and nonsiblings. However, we found no evidence of an alarm response in R. cascadae. Behaviour of tadpoles in groups exposed only to predators was not different from that of tadpoles in groups exposed to predators plus crushed conspecifics. Tadpoles in groups exposed to crushed tadpoles were as active as tadpoles in groups exposed to water controls, and some test individuals fed upon the dead tadpoles. Thus, while R. cascadae tadpoles reduce activity in response to newt predators, crushed tadpoles appear to initiate a feeding response rather than an alarm response as has been previously proposed.  相似文献

The radiofrequency electromagnetic radiation emitted by smart phones on biological systems has wide media coverage and public concern in recent years. The aim of this study was to explore the effects of fourth-generation cell phone radiation exposure on hematological (Total leukocyte count, Total erythrocyte count, and hemoglobin %), biochemical (Serum creatinine) parameters, and histopathological changes in the kidney and testis of Swiss albino mice. A total of 30 male Swiss albino mice weighing 45–65 g was randomly divided into three groups (n = 10). The first group A was the control group, the second group B, was exposed to 40 minutes of mobile phone radiation daily, the third group C was exposed to 60 minutes of radiation daily from two 2400 Megahertz fourth-generation connected mobile phones for 60 days, respectively. The electromagnetic radiation frequency radiometer measured the frequency of electromagnetic radiation emitted from cell phones. The specific absorption rate was calculated as 0.087 W/kg. The control group was kept under similar conditions, but the electromagnetic field was not given for the same period. All the mice were sacrificed at the end of the experiment. The blood samples were collected for hematobiochemical study, and then kidney and testis tissues were collected for histopathological study. Results of the study showed that the body weight and total erythrocyte count values were significantly (p < 0.05) decreased while total leukocyte count, hemoglobin %, and serum creatinine values were significantly (p < 0.05) increased in both the radiation exposure groups relative to the control group. Histopathological observation showed the kidney of 60 minutes exposed mice interstitial inflammation that causes marked mononuclear cellular infiltration compared to the 40 minutes and control mice. Compared to control mice, histopathological examinations of testicular tissue from the exposed mice, showed irregular in shapes and non-uniform sizes and fewer spermatogenic cells layer that leads to the larger lumen in the seminiferous tubules. It is concluded that fourth-generation cell phone radiation exposure may affect blood hemostasis and inflammation of mice's kidney and testis tissue. Based on these studies, it is important to increase public consciousness of potential adverse effects of mobile phone radiofrequency electromagnetic radiation exposure.  相似文献

Members of the genus Ranavirus (family Iridoviridae) can cause catastrophic mortality of pond-breeding amphibians and are associated with an emerging infectious disease that may be contributing to amphibian declines. We conducted three experiments to examine factors that may affect transmission both within and between local breeding populations of the wood frog (Rana sylvatica). In a laboratory study, when exposed to moribund tadpoles collected during a local ranaviral die-off, uninfected tadpoles died as soon as 4 days after exposure. The onset of death was accelerated when tadpoles were allowed to scavenge on carcasses of infected tadpoles. In a mesocosm experiment that was conducted in outdoor wading pools, die-offs of tadpoles began approximately 19 days after infected tadpoles were added to pools containing uninfected tadpoles. Mass die-offs with greater than 98% mortality occurred in all pools, regardless of the initial tadpole density. In a second mesocosm experiment, the addition of water and bottom sediments that were collected from a pond during a ranaviral die-off did not result in lower tadpole survival or growth relative to controls. Only a small percentage of tadpoles appeared to be sick, and most tadpoles survived until the first individuals began metamorphosing within a pool. However, tests for ranavirus using polymerase chain reaction were positive for most pools that received contaminated sediment, suggesting that some infections were sublethal. Our results indicate that transmission within ponds is enhanced by scavenging and that spread between local ponds could occur via the transport of contaminated sediment by animals or humans.  相似文献

Ultraviolet B radiation (UVBR) damages the DNA of exposed cells, causing dimers to form between adjacent pyrimidine nucleotides. These dimers block DNA replication, causing mutations and apoptosis. Most organisms utilize biochemical or biophysical DNA repair strategies to restore DNA structure; however, as with most biological reactions, these processes are likely to be thermally sensitive. Tadpoles exposed to elevated UVBR at low environmental temperatures have significantly higher rates of mortality and developmental deformities compared with tadpoles exposed to the same levels of UVBR at higher environmental temperatures. We hypothesized that low environmental temperatures impair the primary enzymatic (photolyase) DNA repair pathway in amphibians, leading to the accumulation of DNA damage. To test this hypothesis, we compared DNA repair rates and photolyase gene expression patterns in Limnodynastes peronii. Tadpoles were acutely exposed to UVBR for 1 hr at either 20 or 30°C, and we measured DNA damage and photolyase expression levels at intervals following this exposure. Temperature had a significant effect on the rate of DNA repair, with repair at 30°C occurring twice as fast as repair at 20°C. Photolyase gene expression (6‐4 PP and CPD) was significantly upregulated by UVBR exposure, with expression levels increasing within 6 hr of UVBR exposure. CPD expression levels were not significantly affected by temperature, but 6‐4 PP expression was significantly higher in tadpoles in the 30°C treatment within 12 hr of UVBR exposure. These data support the hypothesis that DNA repair rates are thermally sensitive in tadpoles and may explain why enigmatic amphibian declines are higher in montane regions where UVBR levels are naturally elevated and environmental temperatures are lower.  相似文献

Individual organisms vary in personality, and the ecological consequences of that variation can affect the strength of predator–prey interactions. Prey with bolder tendencies can mitigate the strength of species interactions by altering growth and initiating ontogenetic niche shifts (ONS). While the link between personality and growth has been established, recent research has highlighted the important interplay between ONS and predator cues in community ecology. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of prey personality and predator cues on prey growth and ONS. We predicted growth–mortality trade-offs among personalities with higher survival, larger size, and accelerated ONS for bold individuals in comparison with shy individuals. To evaluate this objective, we conducted behavioral assays and a mesocosm experiment to test how southern leopard frog (Rana sphenocephala) tadpole personality and predatory fish (bluegill, Lepomis macrochirus) cues affects tadpole growth and metamorphosis. On average, bold tadpoles had higher mortality across all treatments in comparison with shy tadpoles. The effects of fish cues were dependent on tadpole personality with shy tadpoles metamorphosing significantly later than bold tadpoles. Bold tadpoles were larger than shy tadpoles at metamorphosis; however, that pattern reversed with fish cues as shy individuals metamorphosed larger than bold individuals. Our results suggest personality may be useful for predicting growth and life history for some prey species with predators. Specifically, the threat of predation can interact with personality to incur a benefit (earlier ONS) while also incurring a cost (size at metamorphosis). Hence by incorporating predator cues with personality, ecologists will be able to elucidate growth–mortality trade-offs mediated by personality.  相似文献

Red swamp crayfish Procambarus clarkii, a widespread invasive alien crayfish, represents a serious threat for several freshwater species, including amphibians, which are declining at a global scale. As a shared coevolutionary history is the main factor determining the emergence of antipredator responses, Anuran tadpoles may not be able to cope effectively with this introduced predator. We performed two experiments to assess agile frog's (Rana dalmatina) defensive responses to both P. clarkii and native dragonfly larvae (Anax imperator). First, we conditioned embryos (collected from two ponds 30 km away from each other) with predators’ chemical cues to explore possible variation in hatching time caused by predation risk. In the second experiment, to evaluate how predators’ diet affects tadpole behavior, we conditioned tadpoles for a 5‐week period with cues from tadpole‐fed and gammarid‐fed predators and recorded behavioral and morphological responses. Embryos did not alter hatching time in the presence of any predator cue, while tadpoles from both populations strongly reduced activity and visibility when raised in the presence of tadpole‐fed dragonfly larvae. Morphological changes were less straightforward and were induced only in one population, for which broader tails and a slight increase in body size of tadpoles exposed to tadpole‐fed predators were observed. The lack of defensive responses in crayfish‐exposed tadpoles suggests that the spreading of this invasive species in agricultural lowlands of northern Italy may represent a further threat to their conservation.  相似文献

Radiofrequency radiations (RFRs) emitted by mobile phone base stations have raised concerns on its adverse impact on humans residing in the vicinity of mobile phone base stations. Therefore, the present study was envisaged to evaluate the effect of RFR on the DNA damage and antioxidant status in cultured human peripheral blood lymphocytes (HPBLs) of individuals residing in the vicinity of mobile phone base stations and comparing it with healthy controls. The study groups matched for various demographic data including age, gender, dietary pattern, smoking habit, alcohol consumption, duration of mobile phone use and average daily mobile phone use. The RF power density of the exposed individuals was significantly higher (p < 0.0001) when compared to the control group. The HPBLs were cultured and the DNA damage was assessed by cytokinesis blocked micronucleus (MN) assay in the binucleate lymphocytes. The analyses of data from the exposed group (n = 40), residing within a perimeter of 80 m of mobile base stations, showed significantly (p < 0.0001) higher frequency of micronuclei when compared to the control group, residing 300 m away from the mobile base station/s. The analysis of various antioxidants in the plasma of exposed individuals revealed a significant attrition in glutathione (GSH) concentration (p < 0.01), activities of catalase (CAT) (p < 0.001) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) (p < 0.001) and rise in lipid peroxidation (LOO) when compared to controls. Multiple linear regression analyses revealed a significant association among reduced GSH concentration (p < 0.05), CAT (p < 0.001) and SOD (p < 0.001) activities and elevated MN frequency (p < 0.001) and LOO (p < 0.001) with increasing RF power density.  相似文献

Summary The growth and survival of juvenile toads, Bufo bufo, infected with a common lung nematode, Rhabdias bufonis, were studied. Toads were raised from tadpoles in the laboratory and infected 2 months after metamorphosis. Individual toads were exposed to doses of 10, 40, 80 or 160 larvae, which enabled examination of the hypothesis that parasite-induced mortality is affected by worm numbers. Growth of infected toads began to diverge from that of uninfected controls at 6 weeks post infection (WPI) and by 12 WPI the most heavily infected toads were approximately half the mass of controls. No controls died throughout the experiment; however, mortality of infected toads was strongly affected by parasite density. A mechanism for mortality is suggested by the significant negative relationship between parasite density and dietary intake. This parasite-induced anorexia was detected at 3 WPI and persisted up to 9 WPI. Patterns of reduced host growth, survival and dietary intake provide experimental evidence of the negative consequences of parasitic infection in a natural parasite-host system which may also be present under natural conditions.  相似文献

This study examined the effects of multiple predators on size‐specific behavior and mortality of two species of anuran larvae. Particularly, we focused on how trait changes in predators and prey may be transmitted to other species in the food web. In laboratory experiments, we examined the effects of bluegill sunfish, Lepomis macrochirus, and the odonate larva Anax junius on behavior and mortality of tadpoles of the bullfrog, Rana catesbeiana, and the green frog R. clamitans. Experiments were conducted with predators alone and together to assess effects on behavior and mortality of the tadpoles. The experiments were replicated on five size classes of the tadpoles to evaluate how responses varied with body size.
Predation rates by Anax were higher on bullfrogs than on green frogs, and both bullfrogs and green frogs suffered greater mortality from Anax than from bluegill. Bluegill only consumed green frogs. Predation rates by both predators decreased with increasing tadpole size and decreased in the non‐lethal (caged) presence of the other predator. Both anuran larvae decreased activity when exposed to predators. Bullfrogs, however, decreased activity more in the presence of Anax than in the presence of bluegill, whereas green frogs decreased activity similarly in the presence of both predators. The largest size class of green frogs, but not of bullfrogs, exhibited spatial avoidance of bluegill. These responses were directly related to the risk posed by the different predators to each anuran species. Anax activity (speed and move frequency) also was higher when alone than in the non‐lethal presence of bluegill. We observed decreased predation rate of each predator in the non‐lethal presence of the other, apparently caused by two different mechanisms. Bluegill decreased Anax mortality on tadpoles by restricting the Anax activity. In contrast, Anax decreased bluegill mortality on tadpoles by reducing tadpole activity. We discuss how the activity and spatial responses of the tadpoles interact with palatability and body size to create different mortality patterns in the prey species and the implications of these results to direct and indirect interactions in this system.  相似文献

The model biological organisms Drosophila melanogaster and Drosophila virilis have been utilized to assess effects on apoptotic cell death of follicles during oogenesis and reproductive capacity (fecundity) decline. A total of 280 different experiments were performed using newly emerged flies exposed for short time daily for 3–7?d to various EMF sources including: GSM 900/1800?MHz mobile phone, 1880–1900?MHz DECT wireless base, DECT wireless handset, mobile phone-DECT handset combination, 2.44?GHz wireless network (Wi-Fi), 2.44?GHz blue tooth, 92.8?MHz FM generator, 27.15?MHz baby monitor, 900?MHz CW RF generator and microwave oven’s 2.44?GHz RF and magnetic field components. Mobile phone was used as a reference exposure system for evaluating factors considered very important in dosimetry extending our published work with D. melanogaster to the insect D. virilis. Distance from the emitting source, the exposure duration and the repeatability were examined. All EMF sources used created statistically significant effects regarding fecundity and cell death-apoptosis induction, even at very low intensity levels (0.3?V/m blue tooth radiation), well below ICNIRP’s guidelines, suggesting that Drosophila oogenesis system is suitable to be used as a biomarker for exploring potential EMF bioactivity. Also, there is no linear cumulative effect when increasing the duration of exposure or using one EMF source after the other (i.e. mobile phone and DECT handset) at the specific conditions used. The role of the average versus the peak E-field values as measured by spectrum analyzers on the final effects is discussed.  相似文献

Neuroventilation is highly plastic and exposure to either of two distinct teratogens, nicotine or ethanol, during development results in a similar loss of the neuroventilatory response to hypercapnia in bullfrog tadpoles. Whether this functional deficit is permanent or transient following nicotine or ethanol exposure was unknown. Here, we tested the persistence of hypercapnic neuroventilatory response impairments in tadpoles exposed to either 30 μg/L nicotine or 0.12–0.06 g/dL ethanol for 10 weeks. Brainstem breathing‐related neural activity was assessed in tadpoles allowed to develop teratogen‐free after either nicotine or ethanol exposure. Nicotine‐exposed animals responded normally to hypercapnia after a 3‐week teratogen‐free period but the hypercapnic response in ethanol‐exposed tadpoles remained impaired. Tadpoles allowed to develop for only 1 week nicotine free after chronic exposure were unable to respond to hypercapnia. The hypercapnic response of ethanol‐exposed tadpoles returned by 6 weeks following chronic ethanol exposure. These findings suggest that some nicotine‐ and ethanol‐induced impairments can be resolved during early development. Understanding both the disruptive effects of nicotine and ethanol exposure and how impaired responses return when teratogen exposure stops may offer insight on the function and plasticity of respiratory control. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
