Ecological distribution of four co-occurring Mediterranean heath species   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Erica australis, E. scoparia, E. arborea and Calluna vulgaris are the most abundant heath species on acid, sandstone-derived soils of the Strait of Gibraltar region (southern Spain and northern Morocco). Despite their apparently similar ecological requirements, these four species are somewhat ecologically segregated. Erica australis is abundant only on poor, shallow soils, with a high content in soluble aluminium, generally on mountain ridges and summits. Erica scoparia becomes dominant on deeper sandstone soils with lower aluminium. Calluna vulgaris coexists with these Erica species in communities under low or no tree cover. In the Spanish side of the Strait (Algeciras), Erica arborea tends to be relegated to communities under moderate to dense tree cover, whereas this species is more abundant and widespread in the Moroccan side (Tangier). Tolerance to extreme physical conditions - high aluminium and dense tree cover - and interspecific competition seem to explain the ecological distribution of these four heath species in the Strait of Gibraltar region. The more fragmented pattern of sandstone patches and higher disturbance levels in Tangier might account for the differences in the patterns of ecological distribution of these four heath species between both sides of the Strait of Gibraltar.  相似文献

Using plant material collected from the field and subsequently cultivated in the glasshouse, the basis of variation in a number of chemical parameters observed in Salvia fruticosa has been examined. It was shown that clones from three populations collected from different parts of Crete and previously found to exhibit different essential oil yields and profiles maintained these differences during cultivation. They were found to differ also in morphology and habit, phenolic yield and composition and different nitrogen-utilizing capacity as estimated by nitrate reductase activity. Some clones had very high levels of rosmarinic acid. The population with the highest essential oil yield had the lowest phenolic content and vice versa, but within populations there were clones with high levels of both.  相似文献

Although revegetation using native flora is a low cost way to stabilize soil and restore the landscape contaminated with metals, little is known regarding the Pb-tolerance of many of these species. For this purpose, we evaluated the tolerance of Erica andevalensis to Pb by growing plants in nutrient solutions with increasing concentrations of Pb (up to 100 microM). Plant growth and different physiological parameters were determined to ascertain tolerance to metal stress. Additionally, an electron microscopy study coupled with EDX-analysis was performed to get clues on the Pb uptake and translocation from roots into stem and leaves. The LOEC (the lowest observed effect concentration) of Pb was 40 microM while the IC50 (inhibition concentration) was 80 microM Pb. Chemical analysis revealed a root > stem > leaf accumulation pattern. There was a severe reduction in fresh biomass and chlorophyll concentration at the highest Pb dose. The SEM-EDX study indicated that Pb was mostly located in root epidermal tissues. The blockage of Pb on the root probably avoided its toxic effects by limiting Pb transport to other tissues.  相似文献

Extracts from plantlets of different species of the genus Drosera, grown as in vitro cultures, were evaluated for the level of phenolic secondary metabolites from the group of naphthoquinones and flavonols. The profiles of natural products in the extracts obtained from different species were monitored by HPLC with UV detection at 260 and 330 nm. On the basis of the data obtained, Drosera binata, the species with the highest amount of plumbagin, was selected for further studies. The most effective method of extraction of quinones was established and the composition of phenolic secondary metabolites in the tissues was determined. For the identification of phenolic compounds, HPLC-UV and HPLC-ESI/MS were applied.  相似文献

Lake Biwa, one of the few ancient lakes in the world, harbors many coastal species that commonly inhabit seashores. The beach pea (Lathyrus japonicus) is a typical coastal species of this freshwater lake, and morphological and genetic differentiation between inland and coastal populations of this species have been reported. Inland and coastal habitats inflict distinct environmental stresses to plants, the latter imposing salt stress and high-light intensity, which leads to physiological differentiation. These abiotic stresses affect phenolic compounds, which play an important role in the response of plants to the toxic by-products of stress metabolism. We investigated physiological differentiation of phenolic compounds of the beach pea between inland and coastal habitats using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) analysis. Flavonoid composition analyses revealed that patterns of flavonoid composition of inland populations at Lake Biwa were differentiated from those of coastal populations. All Lake Biwa individuals were fixed in the same flavonols glycosylated at 3- and 7-positions. In contrast, most coastal individuals contained flavonols glycosylated at 3-position alone, and these populations exhibited higher variation in flavonoid composition compared to among/within inland populations. Variation was likely lower in inland populations because of a bottleneck during landlocked periods, which is consistent with previous phylogeographic studies. A qualitative HPLC survey of flavonoid content revealed substantial variation among individuals regardless of locality. These results suggest that changes in the habitat environment may have led to beach pea acclimation via alteration of the quantity and quality of flavonoids.  相似文献

DNA sequences of the mitochondrial control region of 180 North Atlantic right whales ( Euhalaena glacialis ) and 16 South Atlantic right whales ( E. australis ) have been determined using a combination of direct DNA sequencing and single stranded conformation polymorphism (SSCP) analysis. Five haplotypes were found in E. glacialis , and 10 in E. australis , but none were shared, supporting the reproductive isolation and separate species status of the North and South Atlantic right whales. One haplotype in E, glacialis was found in only three males born before 1982 and this matriline will likely be lost soon. The nucleotide diversity estimates for the five North Atlantic right whale haplotypes was 0.6% and 2.0% for the 10 haplotypes found in the South Atlantic right whales. The average haplotypic diversity was 0.87 in E. glacialis and 0.96 in E. australis , which is consistent with other studies showing a lower level of genetic variation in the North Atlantic right whale. Phylogenetic analysis identified two major assemblages of haplotypes in E. australis from the samples collected from Peninsula Valdes, suggesting a mixing of two historically divergent populations. Using genetic distance measurements with a divergence rate of 0.5%–1.0%/myr, we estimate E. glacialis diverged from E. australis 3–12.5 mya.  相似文献

The Dry Matter Content (DMC), the total phenolic content, the production of new branches and the plant fragmentation were compared in three macrophyte species (Elodea canadensis, Elodea nuttallii and Myriophyllum spicatum) exposed or not to snail herbivory. Grazing significantly reduced the DMC of M. spicatum and E. canadensis, but had no effect on the DMC of E. nuttallii. The phenolic contents of Elodea species were not modified by snail herbivory, whereas that of M. spicatum significantly increased when exposed to grazers. The number of new branches produced by M. spicatum and E. canadensis plants, and the fragmentation of E. canadensis also increased in response to herbivory. Chemical defences are therefore probably constitutive in Elodea and induced in M. spicatum, and morphological changes can be related to species growth form and synthesis of phenolic compounds. Mechanisms of reproductive isolation during plant speciation are often unclear because distinct species often experience high levels of gene flow and hybridization. Adaptive radiations such as the Hawaiian silversword alliance (HSA) provide unique opportunities to study the interactions of selection, gene flow and isolating mechanisms during the speciation process. We examined patterns of phenotypic and genetic differentiation in Dubautia arborea and Dubautia ciliolata, two parapatric HSA taxa that show marked morphological divergence but evidence of weak molecular differentiation, in order to estimate genome-wide differentiation and gene flow patterns. We scored 166 amplified fragment length polymorphism markers in a set of 89 plants from two populations each of D. arborea and D. ciliolata and phenotypically D. arborea-like and D. ciliolata-like plants from a natural hybrid zone. Analyses of population subdivision showed low levels of differentiation between the two species (F(ST) = 0.089) and evidence that the phenotypically parental hybrid zone plants were largely of parental species rather than of hybrid origin. A Bayesian analysis of population ancestry identified a number of plants with admixed D. arborea and D. ciliolata ancestry, even in nonhybrid-zone populations. These results suggest that genome-wide low levels of differentiation between D. arborea and D. ciliolata are in part due to gene flow, and favour models of genic speciation and collective evolution in which gene flow has different effects on selected loci vs. nonselected genomic regions. We discuss ecological and climatic factors that may have shaped patterns of differentiation in this species complex.  相似文献

Denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis of amplified fragments of genes coding for 16S rRNA and for the largest subunit of multicomponent phenol hydroxylase (LmPH) was used to monitor the behaviour and relative abundance of mixed phenol-degrading bacterial populations (Pseudomonas mendocina PC1, P. fluorescens strains PC18, PC20 and PC24) during degradation of phenolic compounds in phenolic leachate- and oil-amended microcosms. The analysis indicated that specific bacterial populations were selected in each microcosm. The naphthalene-degrading strain PC20 was the dominant degrader in oil-amended microcosms and strain PC1 in phenolic leachate microcosms. Strain PC20 was not detectable after cultivation in phenolic leachate microcosms. Mixed bacterial populations in oil-amended microcosms aggregated and formed clumps, whereas the same bacteria had a planktonic mode of growth in phenolic leachate microcosms. Colony hybridisation data with catabolic gene specific probes indicated that, in leachate microcosms, the relative proportions of bacteria having meta (PC1) and ortho (PC24) pathways for degradation of phenol and p-cresol changed alternately. The shifts in the composition of mixed population indicated that different pathways of metabolism of aromatic compounds dominated and that this process is an optimised response to the contaminants present in microcosms.  相似文献

Clarkia australis and C. virgata grow on the western slope of the central Sierra Nevada of California. Clarkia australis was established to accommodate populations of C. virgata from south of the Tuolumne River that could not be successfully hybridized to populations north of the river. Although the species is maintained in the new Jepson Manual, its validity has been questioned because only two populations were originally tested, and they had no useful morphological traits that distinguished them from C. virgata. We report here the results of a large program of interpopulation hybridizations that show that C. australis is distinct and that its reproductive isolation from C. virgata is complete and absolute and reflects a compatibility block that apparently causes abortion of hybrid seeds in early development. Both species include populations north and south of the Tuolumne River and, in general, those of C. australis occupy higher elevations. Morphologically, the species are extremely similar though the mean values of several dimensions of the petals are different. However, significant variation among their populations has the consequence that, at present, the only certain way to assign particular populations to species is to test their compatibility with previously tested populations.  相似文献

A fast and reliable HPLC method for the determination of caffeic acid derivatives (caftaric acid, chlorogenic acid, caffeic acid, cynarin, echinacoside and cichoric acid) in various species of the genus Echinacea has been developed. Extraction of root samples by magnetic stirring with 80% methanol aqueous solution at room temperature allowed the complete recovery of all compounds of interest. Root extracts were analysed on a reversed-phase column with gradient elution and photodiode array detection. Caffeic acid derivatives showed differential qualitative and quantitative distributions in Echinacea species. The total amount of phenolic compounds ranged from 33.95 to 0.32 mg/g. The highest contents of caffeic acid derivatives were found in E. paradoxa var. paradoxa, E. paradoxa var. neglecta and E. purpurea, followed by E. angustifolia var. angustifolia, E. simulata, E. pallida and E. laevigata, whilst E. tennesseensis, E. sanguinea and E. atrorubens had low amounts of phenolic compounds. The radical scavenging activities of methanolic extracts of roots of Echinacea species was evaluated in vitro using the DPPH* radical scavenging method. The EC50 values of the samples ranged from 122 to 1223 microg/mL. The radical scavenging activities of the root extracts were correlated with the content of phenolic compounds, with a correlation coefficient (r2) of 0.923.  相似文献

We identified volatiles from the floral headspace of Yucca filamentosa using gas chromatography and mass spectrometry and analyzed floral scent composition and variation among populations pollinated by different yucca moth species. Twenty-one scent compounds were repeatedly identified and most could be categorized into two major classes: (1) homoterpenes derived from the sesquiterpene alcohol nerolidol and (2) long chain aliphatic hydrocarbons. Two biosynthetic pathways are thus responsible for the majority of floral volatiles in Y. filamentosa. The homoterpene E-4,8-dimethylnona-1,3,7-triene, which is released systemically by higher plants upon herbivory, was the most abundant compound. Two di-oxygenated compounds not previously reported as floral compounds also were detected. No differentiation in floral scent was observed between populations pollinated by different yucca moths, nor was there any correlation between chemical distance and geographic distance among populations. The total release rate of volatiles differed significantly among populations, but not between populations with different pollinators. The combination of unique compounds and low variation in the fragrance blend may reflect highly selective attraction of obligate pollinators to flowers. The observed lack of differentiation in floral scent can putatively explain high moth-mediated gene flow among sites, but it does not explain conservation of odor composition across populations with different pollinators.  相似文献

Mycorrhiza samples of neighbouring Quercus ilex and Erica arborea plants collected in a postcutting habitat were processed to see whether plants differing in mycorrhizal status harbour the same root endophytes. Three experiments were performed in parallel: (i) isolation, identification and molecular characterization of fungi from surface-sterilized roots of both plant species; (ii) re-inoculation of fungal isolates on axenic E. arborea and Q. ilex seedlings; (iii) direct inoculation of field-collected Q. ilex ectomycorrhizas onto E. arborea seedlings. About 70 and 150 fungal isolates were obtained from roots of Q. ilex and E. arborea, respectively. Among them, Oidiodendron species and five cultural morphotypes of sterile isolates formed typical ericoid mycorrhizas on E. arborea in vitro. Fungi with such mycorrhizal ability were derived from both host plants. Isolates belonging to one of these morphotypes (sd9) also exhibited an unusual pattern of colonization, with an additional extracellular hyphal net. Ericoid mycorrhizas were also readily obtained by direct inoculation of E. arborea seedlings with Q. ilex ectomycorrhizal tips. Polymerase chain-restriction fragment length polymorphism and random amplified polymorphic DNA analyses of the shared sterile morphotypes demonstrate, in the case of sd9, the occurrence of the same genet on the two host plants. These results indicate that ericoid mycorrhizal fungi associate with ectomycorrhizal roots, and the ecological significance of this finding is discussed.  相似文献

The main representatives of acidophilic chemolithotrophs oxidizing sulfide minerals, ferrous iron, elemental sulfur, and reduced sulfur compounds and forming microbial communities in the natural and technogenic ecosystems with low pH values and high concentrations of heavy metal ions are listed. The species and strain diversity of the communities and environmental factors affecting their composition (temperature, pH value, energy substrate, mineralogical composition of sulfide ore concentrates, the presence of organic substances, and level of aeration) are analyzed. Involvement of mobile genetic elements (IS elements and plasmids) in the structural changes of the chromosomal DNA in the course of switching microbial metabolism to the oxidation of new energy substrates or under increased concentrations of metal ions is shown to be a probable mechanism responsible for the intraspecific genetic heterogeneity of the populations. Importance of determination of the dominant strains of different microbial species in the communities and of their physiological peculiarities for stabilization, optimization, and enhancement of efficiency of biotechnological processes for sulfide mineral oxidation is stressed.  相似文献

应用平板计数与PCR-DGGE技术相结合的方法,对人工湿地芦苇(Phragmites australis)、香蒲(Typha latifolia)和黑麦草(Lolium perenne)三种植物根际微生物群落多样性进行研究。结果表明,三种植物根际具有不同的微生物数量和群落结构;根际微生物数量显著高于非根际(P<0.05),两者具有不同的群落结构和优势种群;芦苇根际具有数目最多的常见物种和最大的物种均匀性,根际与根区多样性指数差别最大,根际效应R/S最大,表明芦苇能够更好的影响土壤微生物的富集和分布,提高微生物群落多样性。  相似文献

The relative roles of gene flow and natural selection in maintaining species differentiation have been a subject of debate for some time. The traditional view is that gene flow constrains adaptive divergence and maintains species cohesiveness. Alternatively, ecological speciation posits that the reverse is true: that adaptive ecological differentiation constrains gene flow. In this study, we examine gene flow and population differentiation among populations of two species of the Hawaiian silversword alliance, Dubautia arborea and D. ciliolata. We compare divergence in putatively neutral microsatellite markers with divergence in leaf morphometric traits, which may be selectively important or physiologically linked to selectively important traits. Gene flow between populations was found to be significant in only one of the two species, D. arborea. Leaf morphometric differentiation between species was significant, though not among populations within species. No evidence of effective genetic introgression was observed between apparently 'pure' populations of these species. Gene flow as measured by microsatellites was not correlated with geographic distance between populations, but was correlated with the linear placement of the widest part of the leaf. Because these two species are interfertile, as demonstrated by the presence of active hybrid zone, the lack of genetic introgression and the maintenance of species boundaries may be associated with natural selection on differential habitat.  相似文献
