To explore whether the age at cancer diagnosis was associated with residential exposure to magnetic field, we compared average ages at diagnosis for cases of leukemia, brain tumor, or female breast cancer with elevated exposure (magnetic flux density >or= 0.2 microT, or residential distance from major power lines 100 m from major power lines). Comparing with brain tumor cases with background magnetic field exposure (n = 506), brain tumor cases with elevated exposure (n = 71) were 6 years older on average at diagnosis (P = 0.01). The difference was greater for males (45.2 vs. 52.1 years, P = 0.01) than for females (44.3 vs. 48.2 years, P = 0.27). No such phenomena at a significant level was observed for leukemia, female breast cancer, or a random sample of general population. We noted an association between magnetic field exposure and a greater mean age at diagnosis for brain tumors. Whether or not these phenomena suggest a delayed occurrence of brain tumors following a higher than background residential magnetic field exposure deserves further investigation.  相似文献

The possibility that weak, ac and dc magnetic fields in combination may affect binding equilibria of calcium-ions (Ca2+) was investigated with two metallochromic dyes as calcium-binding molecules: murexide and arsenazo III. Calcium-dye equilibria were followed by measuring solution absorbances with a fiber-optic spectrophotometer. A Ca(2+)-arsenazo solution was also used indirectly to monitor the binding of Ca2+ to calmodulin. Parallel, ac and dc magnetic fields were applied to each preparation. The ac magnetic field was held constant during each of a series of experiments at a frequency in the range between 50 and 120 Hz (sine wave) or at 50 pps (square wave) and at an rms flux density in the range between 65 and 156 microT. The dc magnetic field was then varied from 0 to 299 microT at 1.3 microT increments. The magnetic fields did not measurably affect equilibria in the binding of metallochromic dyes or calmodulin to Ca2+.  相似文献

The influence of extremely weak alternating magnetic fields (EW AMF) directed colinearly to the static Earth magnetic field on the rate of regeneration of planarians and the rate of gravitropic response in the stem segments of flax has been studied. The value of bioeffects of EW AMF is determined by the parameter gamma B(AC)/f, where y is the gyromagnetic ratio of the magnetic moments induced by the orbital movements of electrons in atoms, and B(AC) and f correspond to magnetic induction and frequency of the alternating magnetic component. It was shown that the magnitude of bioeffects depends on the amplitude (at fixed 1000 Hz - frequency) and frequency (at fixed 192 nT - amplitude) of the alternating component. Maxima of bioeffects are observed at gamma B(AC)/f = 0.9; 2.75, and minor maxima gamma B(AC)/f = 4.5; 6.1. The bioeffects are absent at gamma B(AC)/f = 1.8, 3.8, 5.3, 6.7. The positions of the maxima and minima of bioeffects correspond to the theoretical prediction (at gamma = 14000 Hz/microT). Primary targets for the EW AMF of this type are the magnetic moments induced by the orbital movements of electrons in atoms.  相似文献

Seeds of hornwort (Cryptotaenia japonica Hassk) were exposed to sinusoidally time-varying extremely low frequency (ELF) magnetic fields (AC fields) in combination with the local geomagnetic field (DC field). Exposure lasted 24 h/day for 16 days. Three directions of the AC magnetic fields were considered; the vertical (magnetic flux density B ACV, the directions parallel B ACparallel), and perpendicular B ACperpendicular to the direction of total geomagnetic field (magnetic flux density BG) in the geomagnetic plane (GP). Controls consisted of seeds exposed to zero AC magnetic fields in combination with the DC magnetic field. The B ACV in combination with BG effectively promoted the germination of hornwort seeds when applied at 750 microT (RMS) at 7 Hz or 500 microT (RMS) at 14 Hz from among the cases of individual frequencies f = 3.5, 7.0, 10.5, 14.0 Hz at 500 and 750 microT. The B ACparallel promoted the germination of hornwort seeds more effectively than the B ACperpendicular in combination with BG when 500 and 750 microT at 7 Hz were applied.  相似文献

Groups of mated female Sprague-Dawley rats were simultaneously exposed to 0 (sham exposed), 7, 70, or 350 microT (rms) circularly polarized 50 Hz magnetic fields (MF) for 22 h/day on gestational day 8-15, the period of rat fetal organogenesis (organogenesis study) or from day 0 to day 7 of gestation, the rat preimplantation period (preimplantation study). Developmental toxicity was assessed on gestational day 20. Identical experiments were repeated to confirm reproducibility of both studies. In both studies, statistically significant differences between exposed and sham exposed animals were observed in several measured parameters; however, these differences only appeared in one, but not both replicate experiments and generally at only an isolated exposure level. Because these differences were not reproducible and did not show a dose response relationship, they were not considered related to MF exposure. In the organogenesis study, lower kidney weights of dams were seen at 70 and 350 microT in Experiment 1. Lower dam liver weights and lower mean body weights of viable female and male fetuses were seen at 70 microT in Experiment 2. Otherwise, there were no differences in these parameters or in group means for fetal loss after implantation, number of viable fetuses, fetal body weight and sex ratio, incidences of external, visceral, and skeletal abnormalities or variations, or tissue abnormalities after histopathological examination. In the preimplantation study, dam health and indices for reproduction and embryo-fetal development, including pre or postimplantation loss, number and body weight of live fetuses, and sex ratio, external, skeletal abnormalities and variations, and skeletal ossification did not differ. Dam inorganic phosphorous concentration at 350 microT was elevated in one experiment and depressed in another. In one experiment, visceral abnormalities, primarily thymic remnant in neck and accessory liver lobe, were increased in the 7 microT group. Based on these results from two studies, we conclude that circularly polarized 50 Hz MF exposure of up to 350 microT during the fetal organogenesis or during the preimplantation period does not affect reproduction and embryo-fetal development in Sprague-Dawley rats.  相似文献

This study investigates the individual magnetic field exposures at 16 2/3 and 50 Hz of 1952 people, selected from the Bavarian population. Personal flux density meters ("Field Watcher FW2A") were worn by the participants for 24 h. Every second, the flux density was recorded for both frequencies and for the three spatial axes (dynamic range per axis: several nT up to 100 microT at 50 Hz, 150 microT at 16 2/3 Hz). For 50 Hz fields, the mean of the 1,952 individual means was 0.101 microT and that of the individual medians was 0.047 microT. High level exposures occurred mainly during working hours. Only 2.4% of the subjects showed individual medians higher than 0.2 microT. About 53% of all volunteers were working on the day of recording. Levels for craftsmen (n = 148; mean individual mean: 0.166 microT) were generally higher than those for office workers (n = 624; mean individual mean: 0.107 microT). Flux densities exceeding 100 microT at 50 Hz were measured in 31 persons. The total time with such extreme exposures amounts to nearly 21 min, less than 0.001% of the total time for all measurements (5.3 years). To our knowledge, this is the first exposure study where 16 2/3 Hz magnetic fields (caused by electrified railways) have additionally been monitored over 24 h. For persons living next to railway lines, the mean individual mean (0.156 microT) and mean individual median (0.102 microT) were calculated. Over all, the mean exposures are only 0.1% of the magnetic flux density limit for 50 Hz (100 microT) and about 0.05% of the limit (300 microT) for 16 2/3 Hz recommended by the International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection.  相似文献

This study sought to estimate the relative contribution of exposure to 50 Hz magnetic fields experienced at home, at work/school, or elsewhere to the total exposure over 24 hr. Personal exposure meters were carried by 97 adults and children in the Stockholm area. About half of the subjects lived close (<50 m) to a transmission line and half far (>100 m) away. Spot measurements and calculations for the residential exposure were also made. For subjects living<50 m from the line, the exposure at home contributed about 80% of the total magnetic field exposure, measured in mT-hours. Adults living far away experienced only 38% of the total exposure at home, but children still received 55%. Subjects with low time-weighted average (TWA) exposure both at home and at work spent 84% of their time in fields <0.1 microT, and those with high TWA at both locations spent 69% of their time in fields > or = 0.2 microT. This contrast was diluted if only exposure at one location was considered. For spot measurements and calculations of the residential exposure, both sensitivity and specificity was good. However, the intermediate field exposure category (0.1-0.19 microT) showed poor correlation to the 24 hr personal measurements.  相似文献

Vegetative responses of dolphin to changes in permanent magnetic field were studied. Electrocardiograms, cutaneogalvanic reactions, and respiration were registered. These parameters were compared with the functional behavior of dolphin: motion, sharp frequent expirations, and acoustic activity. Functional responses to permanent magnetic fields of 32; 108 and 168 microT were registered in 79.2, 63.3 and 52.9% of presentations, respectively. The frequency of responses in control at a power of geomagnetic field of 48.5 microT was 32.7%. Five latent periods were observed in the response of dolphin to changes in magnetic field (72% of responses). It is shown that dolphins have a high responsiveness to changes in permanent magnetic field "magnetic sense").  相似文献

Vicia faba seedlings, subjected to a 10 microT 50 Hz square wave magnetic field for 40 min together with a radioactive pulse, showed a marked increase in amino acid uptake into intact roots. A more modest increase was observed with a 100 microT 50 Hz square wave. An increase in media conductivity at low field intensities from 10 microT 50 Hz square wave, 100 microT 50 Hz sine wave, and 100 microT 60 Hz square wave fields, indicated an alteration in the movement of ions across the plasma membrane, most likely due to an increase in net outflow of ions from the root cells. Similarly, marked elevation in media pH, indicating increased alkalinity, was observed at 10 and 100 microT for both square and sine waves at both 50 and 60 Hz. Our data would indicate that low magnetic field intensities of 10 and 100 microT at 50 or 60 Hz can alter membrane transport processes in root tips.  相似文献

The US National Electrical Code's (NEC) requirement to ground a home's electrical service to the residential water line results in a voltage between the water line and earth, V W-E. The voltage may result from ground return current that flows into the earth via the water line or from inductive effects from other sources of magnetic fields, such as transmission lines. This voltage can, in turn, serve as a source for Vbath, the voltage between the water fixtures and conductive drain pipes sunk into the earth beneath a residence. Vbath can be a source of contact current exposure to a child touching a water fixture while bathing. Previous research has suggested that exposure to these currents could be the basis for the association between power-frequency magnetic fields and childhood leukemia. In this study, we assessed the association between measured Vbath and VW-E with the average spot-measured magnetic field, Bavg, in a sample of 191 single-family residences in the Denver metropolitan area. This area was the source of cases and controls for previous studies of electric and magnetic field (EMF) and childhood cancer. The association of both Vbath and VW-E with Bavg had upward trends across magnetic field strata (<0.1 microT (reference); 0.1-<0.3 microT; and > or = 0.3 microT). In addition, VW-E was associated with Vbath. Without further study, these results cannot be applied to multi-dwelling residences or to electrical systems prevalent in other nations. Nonetheless, when combined with the finding that contact current is a far more plausible candidate than the residential magnetic field for mediating biological effects on the basis of comparative dose to bone marrow, these associations indicate that contact current exposure deserves further study.  相似文献

Several animal studies have been carried out at the Institut Armand Frappier (IAF) to determine whether chronic exposure to 60 Hz linearly polarized sinusoidal magnetic fields might increase the risk of cancer development of female Fisher rats. The magnetic field exposure facility was developed to meet the requirements of the study protocol for chronic exposure of large number of animals to field intensities of sham < 0.2 microT, 2 microT, 20 microT, 200 microT, and 2000 microT. At each exposure level, including sham, the animals are distributed in a group of four exposure units. Each exposure unit contains two exposure volumes having uniform distribution of magnetic fields for the animals, while the magnetic field external to the unit falls off rapidly due to the "figure-eight" coil topography used. A program of "shake down" tests, followed by verification and calibration of the exposure facility, was carried out prior to starting the animal experiments. Continuous monitoring of the magnetic field and other environmental parameters was an important part in the overall quality assurance program adopted.  相似文献

We previously reported phenotypic changes in human breast cancer cells following low-level magnetic field (MF) exposure. Here proteomic methods were used to investigate the biochemical effect of MF exposure in SF767 human glioma cells. Protein alterations were studied after exposure to 1.2 microTesla (microT) MF [12 milliGauss (mG), 60 Hertz (Hz)] +/- epidermal growth factor (EGF). SF767 cells were exposed for 3 h to sham conditions (<0.2 microT ambient field strength) or 1.2 microT MF (+/-EGF; 10 ng/ml). Solubilized protein fractions (sham; 1.2 microT; sham + EGF; 1.2 microT + EGF) were loaded for electrophoresis by 2D-PAGE and stained using a colloidal Coomassie blue technique to resolve and characterize the proteins. Protein patterns were compared across groups via Student's t-test using PDQUEST software. Cell profiles revealed significant alterations in the spot density of a subset of treated cells. Automated spot excision and processing was performed prior to peptide mass fingerprinting proteins of interest. Fifty-seven proteins from the detectable pool were identified and/or found to differ significantly across treatment groups. The mean abundance of 10 identified proteins was altered following 1.2 microT exposure. In the presence of EGF six proteins were altered after low magnetic field treatment by increasing (4) or decreasing (2) in abundance. The results suggest that the analysis of differentially expressed proteins in SF767 cells may be useful as biomarkers for biological changes caused by exposure to magnetic fields.  相似文献

We have tested the hypothesis that extremely low frequency (ELF) time-varying magnetic fields act in combination with static magnetic fields to alter calcium signalling in the lymphocyte. Results indicate that a 60-min exposure of thymic lymphocytes at 37 +/- 0.05 degrees C to a 16 Hz, 421 mG (42.1 microT) magnetic field simultaneously with a colinear static magnetic field of 234 mG (23.4 microT) (a.c./d.c. field intensity ratio = 1.8) inhibits calcium influx triggered by the mitogen Concanavalin A. Significantly, resting lymphocytes do not respond to the fields, thus, only mitogen-activated cells undergoing calcium signalling exhibit a field response. These results indicate that signal transduction involving calcium is an important biological constraint which operates to mediate this field interaction. Additional split field exposures show that the presence of the a.c. field or the d.c. field alone does not produce an effect. This is consistent with a proposed parametric resonance theory of interaction of low intensity magnetic fields with biological systems (L.L. Lednev (1991) Bioelectromagnetics 12, 71-75), which predicts the occurrence of biological effects at specific values for the frequency and field intensity of the ELF and static magnetic fields.  相似文献

Exposure to ELF magnetic field tuned to Zn inhibits growth of cancer cells   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
The effects of ELF alternating magnetic fields tuned to Zn(2+) on the growth of cancer cells with different status of p53 were investigated using a cell proliferation assay. Human cancer cells HeLa (cervix cancer, p53(+/+)), Saos-2 and Saos-2-His-273 (osteosarcoma, p53(-/-) and p53 His-273 mutant, respectively), H1299tTA and H1299tTA-His175 (lung carcinoma, p53(-/-) and p53 His-175 mutant), and normal human fibroblasts VH-10 (p53(+/+)) were used. Exposure parameters were calculated for the first harmonic of Zn(2+) based either on the magnetic parametric resonance (MPR) model of Lednev or the ion parametric resonance (IPR) model of Blanchard and Blackman. ELF exposure was for 72 and 96 h. The vertical alternating field was 20 Hz at amplitudes of either 38.7 or 77.4 microT (peaks, IPR or MPR, respectively). The vertical static magnetic field was 43 microT, and the horizontal static magnetic field was zeroed. Treatments of cells with PRIMA-1 and gamma-rays were used as positive controls. Growth inhibition was observed in cells after exposure to ELF at 38.7 microT. Inhibition of HeLa, VH-10, and Saos-2-His-273 cells was statistically significant, P=0.0003, 0.02, and 0.006, respectively. No consistent ELF effects following exposure 77.4 microT were seen. PRIMA-1 inhibited the growth of all cell lines with the strongest effect in mutant p53-carrying cell line H1299tTA-His175. The effects of gamma-rays were relatively weak, suggesting that the cell proliferation assay under conditions employed in this study is not very sensitive to apoptosis. In conclusion, ELF under conditions of exposure tuned to Zn(2+) according to the IPR model inhibited the growth of cancer and normal cells. No clear relationship of the observed growth inhibition to p53 status was found. Further experiments, using complementary techniques, are required to test whether p53 reactivation by ELF is feasible.  相似文献

Recent epidemiological studies suggest a link between transport magnetic fields (MF) and certain adverse health effects. We performed measurements in workplaces of engineers on Russian DC and Swiss AC powered (16.67 Hz) electric trains using a computer based waveform capture system with a 200 Hz sampling rate. MF in DC and AC trains show complex combinations of static and varying components. The most probable levels of quasistatic MF (0.001-0.03 Hz) were in the range 40 microT. Maximum levels of 120 microT were found in DC powered locomotives. These levels are much higher than the geomagnetic field at the site of measurements. MF encountered both in DC and AC powered rail systems showed irregular temporal variability in frequency composition and amplitude characteristics across the whole frequency range studied (0-50 Hz); however, more than 90% of the magnetic field power was concentrated in frequencies 相似文献

Calcium-ion uptake by normal and leukemia lymphocytes increased during a 30-min exposure to a 13.6 Hz, sinusoidal magnetic field at 20 microT peak. The time-varying field was horizontal and parallel to a 16.5 microT component of the ambient static magnetic field. The uptake of 45Ca2+ increased 102% in a line of murine, cytotoxic T-lymphocytes (C57B1/6-derived CTLL-1), increased 126% in freshly-isolated spleen lymphocytes (C57B1/6 mice), and increased 75% in a line of lymphoma cells (C57B1/6-derived EL4). In contrast, there was no effect when the same field was applied for 30 min immediately before--as opposed to during--incorporation of calcium ions. When spleen lymphocytes were exposed during incubation with 45Ca2+ to a 60 Hz magnetic field at 20 microT peak, a small but statistically significant increase (37%) in uptake of the labeled ions occurred. These results indicate that weak, alternating magnetic fields might affect calcium-dependent functions of normal and leukemic lymphocytes.  相似文献

In order to evaluate the importance of gestational age in possible effects due to exposure to a 20 kHz sawtooth magnetic field, pregnant ICR mice at gestational 2.5-15.5 days post-coitus, which is the most sensitive stage for the induction of major congenital malformations, were exposed in a carrousel irradiator. The mice were exposed to a 20 kHz intermediate frequency (IF) sawtooth magnetic field had a 6.5 microT peak intensity for 8 h/day. The animals were sacrificed on the 18th day of gestation; and the fetuses were examined for mortality, growth retardation, changes in head size, and other morphological abnormalities. From the above conditions, it is concluded that the exposure to a 20 kHz sawtooth magnetic field with 6.5 microT peak intensity does not inflict any adverse effect on fetuses of pregnant mice.  相似文献

The purpose of this study is to investigate the possible effect of an extremely low-frequency magnetic field (ELF-MF) on nitric oxide (NO) level. In this study, 27 male Sprague-Dawley rats were used. The rats were divided into three groups: two experimental and one control (sham-exposed). The first and second experimental group (n = 10) were exposed to 100 microT and 500 microT ELF-MF during 10 months, 2 h a day, respectively, and the third (n = 7) group was treated like an experimental group except for ELF-MF exposure in methacrylate boxes. After ELF-MF and sham exposure, serum nitrite levels were measured by Griess reaction. A significant reduction was observed in nitrite levels among the first and second experimental groups of rats and sham-exposed rats after exposure for 10 months, 2 h a day, to ELF-MF of 100 and 500 microT (p < 0.01). These results suggest that prolonged ELF-MF exposure at intensities of exposure limits, determined by ICNIRP for public and occupational, may reduce NO production probably affected by NO generation pathways.  相似文献

We have developed an intermediate frequency (IF) magnetic field exposure system for in vitro studies. Since there are no previous studies on exposure to heating-frequency magnetic fields generated from an induction heating (IH) cook top, there is a strong need for such an exposure system and for biological studies of IF magnetic fields. This system mainly consists of a magnetic-field-generating coil housed inside an incubator, inside which cultured cells can be exposed to magnetic field. Two systems were prepared to allow the experiment to be conducted in a double-blind manner. The level of the generated magnetic field was set to 532 microT rms in the exposure space, 23 kHz, 80 times the value in the International Commission on Non-ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP) guidelines, with a spatial field uniformity better than 3.8%. The waveforms were nearly sinusoidal. It was also confirmed that the parasitic electric field was 157 V/m rms and the induced electric field was 1.9 V/m rms. The temperature was maintained at 36.5 +/- 0.5 degrees C for 2 h. Furthermore, leaked magnetic flux density was 0.7 microT rms or lower at extremely low frequency (ELF) and IF in the stopped system when the other system was being operated, and the environmental magnetic flux density was 0.1 microT rms or lower at the center of the coils. As a result, it was confirmed that this system could be successfully used to evaluate the biological effects of exposure to IF magnetic fields.  相似文献

Comparatively high exposures to power-frequency electric and magnetic fields produce established biological effects that are explained by accepted mechanisms and that form the basis of exposure guidelines. Lower exposures to magnetic fields (< 1 microT average in the home) are classified as "possibly carcinogenic" on the basis of epidemiological studies of childhood leukemia. This classification takes into consideration largely negative laboratory data. Lack of biophysical mechanisms operating at such low levels also argues against causality. We survey around 20 biophysical mechanisms that have been proposed to explain effects at such low levels, with particular emphasis on plausibility: the principle that to produce biological effects, a mechanism must produce a "signal" larger than the "noise" that exists naturally. Some of the mechanisms are impossible, and some require specific conditions for which there is limited or no evidence as to their existence in a way that would make them relevant to human exposure. Others are predicted to become plausible above some level of field. We conclude that effects below 5 microT are implausible. At about 50 microT, no specific mechanism has been identified, but the basic problem of implausibility is removed. Above about 500 microT, there are established or likely effects from accepted mechanisms. The absence of a plausible biophysical mechanism at lower fields cannot be taken as proof that health effects of environmental electric and magnetic fields are impossible. Nevertheless, it is a relevant consideration in assessing the overall evidence on these fields.  相似文献
