The seeds of plants are carriers of a variety of beneficial bacteria and pathogens. Using the non-culture methods of building 16S rDNA libraries, we investigated the endophytic bacterial communities of seeds of four hybrid maize offspring and their respective parents. The results of this study show that the hybrid offspring Yuyu 23, Zhengdan958, Jingdan 28 and Jingyu 11 had 3, 33, 38 and 2 OTUs of bacteria, respectively. The parents Ye 478, Chang 7-2, Zheng 58, Jing 24 and Jing 89 had 12, 36, 6, 12 and 2 OTUs, respectively. In the hybrid Yuyu 23, the dominant bacterium Pantoea (73.38?%) was detected in its female parent Ye 478, and the second dominant bacterium of Sphingomonas (26.62?%) was detected in both its female (Ye 478) and male (Chang 7-2) parent. In the hybrid Zhengdan 958, the first dominant bacterium Stenotrophomonas (41.67?%) was detected in both the female (Zheng 58) and male (Chang 7-2) parent. The second dominant bacterium Acinetobacter (9.26?%) was also the second dominant bacterium of its male parent. In the hybrid Jingdan 28, the second dominant bacterium Pseudomonas (12.78?%) was also the second dominant bacterium of its female parent, and its third dominant bacterium Sphingomonas (9.90?%) was the second dominant bacterium of its male parent and detected in its female parent. In the hybrid Jingyu 11, the first dominant bacterium Leclercia (73.85?%) was the third dominant bacterium of its male parent, and the second dominant bacterium Enterobacter (26.15?%) was detected in its male parent. As far as we know, this was the first research reported in China on the diversity of the endophytic bacterial communities of the seeds of various maize hybrids with different genotypes.  相似文献

External guidance cues play a role in controlling neuronal cell turning in the developing brain, but little is known about whether intrinsic programs are also involved in controlling the turning. In this study, we examined whether granule cells undergo autonomous changes in the direction of migration in the microexplant cultures of the early postnatal mouse cerebellum. We found that granule cells exhibit spontaneous and periodical turning without cell-cell contact and in the absence of external guidance cues. The frequency of turning was increased by stimulating the Ca2+ influx and the internal Ca2+ release, or inhibiting the cAMP signaling pathway, while the frequency was reduced by inhibiting the Ca2+ influx. Granule cell turning in vitro was classified into four distinct modes, which were characterized by the morphological changes in the leading process and the trailing process, such as bifurcating, turning, withdrawing, and changing the polarity. The occurrence of the 1st and 2nd modes of turning was differentially affected by altering the Ca2+ and cAMP signaling pathways. Collectively, the results demonstrate that intrinsic programs regulate the autonomous turning of cerebellar granule cells in vitro. Furthermore, the results suggest that extrinsic signals play a role as essential modulators of intrinsic programs.  相似文献

The behavioural effects of assessment of male dominance status on male and female courtship were investigated in the cockroach, Nauphoeta cinerea. Dominance hierarchies were established in laboratory groups of male N. cinerea; virgin females were then given the opportunity to (1) male with a subordinate male in the presence of dominant male odours; (2) mate with a dominant male in the presence of subordinate male odours; (3) mate with a male in the presence of another male's odour, both males lacking status; (4) mate when only a single male was present and no other male's odour was presented. The presence of the dominant male resulted in a significant delay in the approach of a female to a subordinate male and in the response of a female to a courtship display by the subordinate male. Males that lacked status were significantly slower to initiate courtship behaviours. Copulatory time was significantly shorter for subordinate males and males without status. Information concerning the dominance status of neighbouring males is used in assessment of appropriate mating behaviour by males and as a possible criterion in female choice.  相似文献

The influence of male dominance on male-female social interactions was examined in black ducks, Anas rubripes, and mallards, A. platyrhynchos, that were raised from hatch in four different groups (male and female mallards; male and female black ducks; male mallards and female black ducks; male black ducks and female mallards). The mate preference of females, independent of the influence of male dominance, was determined by exposing females to four caged, isolated males, one from each different group. All females preferred the type of male they had been raised with since hatch. Females were then exposed to the same four males, now free-swimming, to determine how male dominance influenced the initial preference. Under these conditions, each female associated primarily with the most dominant of the four males, regardless of her initial mate preference. Mallards were the most dominant males in all tests. These results demonstrate that male dominance influences social interactions and is one factor contributing to hybridization between these two species.  相似文献

Most species are believed to evolve larger body sizes over evolutionary time. Previous studies have suggested that sexual selection, through male-male competition and female choice, favors larger males. However, there is little evidence of selection against large size. The female serrate-legged small treefrogs (Philautus odontotarsus) must carry passive males from leks to breeding grounds over relatively long distances after amplexus to find a suitable place to lay eggs. The costs of large male size may therefore decrease mating success due to reduced agility and/or higher energy requirements. Thus, we hypothesized that selection would not favor larger males in P. odontotarsus. Females can assess male body size on the basis of the dominant frequency of male calls in frogs. To assess female P. odontotarsus preferences for a potential mate’s body size, male calls of high, average and low dominant frequency were played back to the females in phonotaxis experiments. Results showed that most females prefer the advertisement call with average dominant frequency. In addition, we compared the body mass distribution of amplectant males with that of single males in nature. The body masses of amplectant males are more narrowly distributed in the intermediate range than that of single males. The phonotaxis results and the data of actual female preferences in the field show that females strongly prefer potential mates of mean body sizes, consistent with the view that, in this species at least, larger males are not always perceived as better by females. In the present study, P. odontotarsus provides an example of an amphibian species in which large size does not have an advantage in mating success for males. Instead, our results provide evidences that stabilizing selection favors the optimal intermediate size of males.  相似文献

The aims of the current study were to determine if the pattern of ovarian follicular growth and development in Bos indicus heifers is different to that reported in Bos taurus breeds, and to examine the factors that determine which dominant follicle will ovulate. In addition, the extent to which variation in follicular dynamics is attributable to variation between animals and over time was evaluated. The ovaries of 17 Brahman heifers were examined daily by transrectal ultrasonography using a 7.5 MHz transducer for a total of 117 interovulatory intervals over a period of 10 months. Size and position of individual follicles ⪖5 mm in diameter, and size of corpora lutea (CL) were recorded. Circulating progesterone concentrations were determined from plasma samples obtained twice weekly. Although size of dominant follicles and CL within the ovaries of Bos indicus heifers were smaller than reported for Bos taurus breeds, the overall patterns of dominant follicle growth were similar. There were significant correlations between number of dominant follicles occurring prior to ovulation and time of appearance of the second dominant follicle, duration of detection of CL and size of the ovulatory follicle in the preceding oestrous cycle (P < 0.05). There were significant animal effects on a number of ovarian characteristics including number of dominant follicles per oestrous cycle (P < 0.001), with one heifer having four dominant follicles in more than a third of oestrous cycles observed. In addition, changes in daylength over the 10 month period were related to changes in duration of the interovulatory interval, persistence and maximum diameter of CL and size of ovulatory follicles. Liveweight change over the same period was related to changes in maximum diameter of the first dominant follicle.  相似文献

We tested whether communally roosting greenfinches Carduelis chloris obtained information from conspecifics on the distribution of unpredictable food sources (sunflower seeds, Helianthus sp.) during a severe winter. Seeds were provided at randomly chosen sites in the afternoon and the numbers of greenfinches at these bait sites in the afternoon and the following morning were compared. Numbers did not increase from the afternoon to the morning in eight out of nine trials where greenfinches turned up at the bait sites. Attraction to the bait decreased with increasing ambient temperatures, more birds turning up during severe frost. Subordinate females were attracted to the bait more frequently than dominant male greenfinches.  相似文献

Haloxylon ammodendron (Chenopodiaceae) is a dominant shrubby or sub-arboreal perennial. During the torrid and arid summer, annual assimilative branches of H. ammodendron are often observed slow growing (even ceasing growth) and gradually turning in color from green to brilliant yellow, even with some drying up and falling off. The pivotal factor causing this phenomenon is still unknown. Here we report that it is the high desert surface layer (0–5 cm) temperature (DSLT) that causes H. ammodendron plants to display this phenomenon. Damage is caused by high DSLT around the stem basal part of H. ammodendron plants, with stress threshold value being 55 °C. Based on the color changes of the annual assimilative branches, damage responses of H. ammodendron could be broadly divided into three degrees of mild, moderate and high damage that visually can be detected. DSLT stress also destroys the redox homeostasis in H. ammodendron plants, bringing about physiological damages. Since high DSLT is one of the inherent factors of desert habitat conditions, our results suggest that it will have importance to investigate the direct effect of high DSLT stress also on other desert plants.  相似文献

The walking behaviour of the beetle Tenebrio molitor was studied on a compensating running globe under optical stimuli. The animals show a clear frequency distribution for the duration of continuous walking between abrupt stops. The turning behaviour after a light is switched on or off is correlated with these frequency distributions. The circadian rhythmic changes of activity and of the sensitivity of the eyes influence the turning behaviour. A model describes the phenomenon of ‘sensory storage’ as the result of an integration over the reaction probabilities given by the frequency distributions.  相似文献

The flight trajectories of free flying female and male houseflies have been analyzed in 3 dimensions. Both female and male flies track other flies. The turning velocity α (around the vertical axis) is linearly dependent upon the horizontal angle ψF (that is the angle between the trajectory of the tracking fly and the target) for small values of ψF in females and for the whole range of ψF in males. The 3-dimensional velocity υ xyz of the chasing fly is linearly dependent upon the distance between leading and chasing fly in males but not in females. Male chasing thus appears to be more efficient than female tracking. It is shown that earlier assumptions on visual control of flight in female flies derived from experiments on fixed flying flies are justified.  相似文献

In a series of four experiments, we examined the relationship between male dominance and female preference in Japanese quail, Coturnix japonica. Female quail that had watched an aggressive interaction between a pair of males preferred the loser of an encounter to its winner. This superficially perverse female preference for losers may be explained by the strong correlation between the success of a male in aggressive interactions with other males and the frequency with which he engages in courtship behaviours that appear potentially injurious to females. By choosing to affiliate with less dominant male quail, female quail may lose direct and indirect benefits that would accrue from pairing with dominant males. However, they also avoid the cost of interacting with potentially harmful, more aggressive males.  相似文献

Local search behaviour of the housefly, Musca domestica, released by ingestion of sucrose, was recorded on a bitpad digitizer. Local search is characterized by an initial increase in turning rate and a decrease in locomotory rate followed by an exponential return to control (unfed) levels for both functions. Greater variation in the slope of the exponential return to control levels was observed between runs of different flies than between runs of an individual fly, suggesting a possible internal basis for locomotory and turning functions. The local search pattern, based on decrease in relative turning rate generates a spiral configuration. A zig-zag component increases path width and increases the chances of a fly relocating the drop residue. Looping patterns correlate with successive recontacts with the drop residue and associated changes in turn direction and stopping. The results are discussed with respect to sources of internal and external orientation information controlling local search.  相似文献

We studied mechanisms responsible for reproductive skew in female Alpine marmots. In each social group, only dominant females produced weaned young although subordinate females had similar body condition, were fertile as indicated by high levels of oestradiol during the mating season, and occasionally started pregnancies. During the period of gestation, dominant females initiated significantly more agonistic interactions against subordinate females, resulting in significantly increased levels of glucocorticoids and decreased levels of progesterone in subordinates. Results suggested that reproductive suppression in female Alpine marmots is mediated by the negative effects of stress (glucocorticoids) on the activity of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis. The strength of competition between subordinate and dominant females was affected by their relatedness. Dominant females attacked unrelated subordinate females more, whereas amicable behaviour was observed mainly between dominant females and their daughters. These differences could be explained by differences in indirect fitness: related subordinate females benefited from warming the offspring of the dominant female during hibernation. Reproductive suppression was apparently costly for dominant females, because their reproductive success decreased as the number of adult subordinate females in a group increased. Alpha status may lead to physiological changes that enhance secondary sexual characteristics, which may serve as competitive signals to conspecific males, sexual signals to females, or possibly a combination of both. Here, we report measurements of secondary sexual characteristics in captive dominant and subordinate male tufted capuchin monkeys (Sapajus apella) with varying access to females. An adult male (who had previously been subordinate while housed with other males) was paired with an adult female. This male–female pair was introduced into a room that housed three other male–male pairs with stable hierarchy arrangements. We analyzed weight, body measurements, facial photographs, and hair cortisol before, during, and after introducing a female into the room. While there were no differences in weight or measurements between alphas and subordinates without physical access to the female prior to or during the female''s presence, we found that direct access to the female resulted in dramatic changes in facial appearance, body size, and testicular volume in the male who was paired with her. Overall, we found little evidence to suggest that alpha males advertise their status within all‐male groups via sexual secondary characteristics. However, direct physical access to females appears to trigger the development of such characteristics in alpha males. It remains of continued interest to identify the endocrine mechanisms responsible for the development, and possible loss, of secondary sexual characteristics.  相似文献

To increase individual male fitness, males of various species remain near a (potential) mating partner and repel their rivals (mate-guarding). Mate-guarding is assumed to be mediated by two different types of motivation: sexual motivation toward the opposite sex and competitive motivation toward the same sex. The genetic/molecular mechanisms underlying how mate presence affects male competitive motivation in a triadic relationship has remained largely unknown. Here we showed that male medaka fish prominently exhibit mate-guarding behavior. The presence of a female robustly triggers male-male competition for the female in a triadic relationship (2 males and 1 female). The male-male competition resulted in one male occupying a dominant position near the female while interfering with the other male''s approach of the female. Paternity testing revealed that the dominant male had a significantly higher mating success rate than the other male in a triadic relationship. We next generated medaka mutants of arginine-vasotocin (avt) and its receptors (V1a1, V1a2) and revealed that two genes, avt and V1a2, are required for normal mate-guarding behavior. In addition, behavioral analysis of courtship behaviors in a dyadic relationship and aggressive behaviors within a male group revealed that avt mutant males displayed decreased sexual motivation but showed normal aggression. In contrast, heterozygote V1a2 mutant males displayed decreased aggression, but normal mate-guarding and courtship behavior. Thus, impaired mate-guarding in avt and V1a2 homozygote mutants may be due to the loss of sexual motivation toward the opposite sex, and not to the loss of competitive motivation toward rival males. The different behavioral phenotypes between avt, V1a2 heterozygote, and V1a2 homozygote mutants suggest that there are redundant systems to activate V1a2 and that endogenous ligands activating the receptor may differ according to the social context.  相似文献

How Stable Is Stable? Function versus Community Composition   总被引:12,自引:7,他引:5       下载免费PDF全文
The microbial community dynamics of a functionally stable, well-mixed, methanogenic reactor fed with glucose were analyzed over a 605-day period. The reactor maintained constant pH and chemical oxygen demand removal during this period. Thirty-six rrn clones from each of seven sampling events were analyzed by amplified ribosomal DNA restriction analysis (ARDRA) for the Bacteria and Archaea domains and by sequence analysis of dominant members of the community. Operational taxonomic units (OTUs), distinguished as unique ARDRA patterns, showed reproducible distribution for three sample replicates. The highest diversity was observed in the Bacteria domain. The 16S ribosomal DNA Bacteria clone library contained 75 OTUs, with the dominant OTU accounting for 13% of the total clones, but just 21 Archaea OTUs were found, and the most prominent OTU represented 50% of the clones from the respective library. Succession in methanogenic populations was observed, and two periods were distinguished: in the first, Methanobacterium formicicum was dominant, and in the second, Methanosarcina mazei and a Methanobacterium bryantii-related organism were dominant. Higher variability in Bacteria populations was detected, and the temporal OTU distribution suggested a chaotic pattern. Although dominant OTUs were constantly replaced from one sampling point to the next, phylogenetic analysis indicated that inferred physiologic changes in the community were not as dramatic as were genetic changes. Seven of eight dominant OTUs during the first period clustered with the spirochete group, although a cyclic pattern of substitution occurred among members within this order. A more flexible community structure characterized the second period, since a sequential replacement of a Eubacterium-related organism by an unrelated deep-branched organism and finally by a Propionibacterium-like species was observed. Metabolic differences among the dominant fermenters detected suggest that changes in carbon and electron flow occurred during the stable performance and indicate that an extremely dynamic community can maintain a stable ecosystem function.  相似文献

In many butterfly species, males compete over areas advantageous for encountering females. Rules for contest settlement are, however, largely unknown and neither morphological nor physiological traits can reliably predict the contest outcome. Here, we test the hypothesis that contests are settled in accordance with a motivation asymmetry. We staged contests between males of Pararge aegeria and after removing the resident, the non-resident was allowed (i) either to interact with a non-receptive female for 30 min (n = 30) or (ii) to spend 30 min alone in the cage (n = 30), after which the initial resident was reintroduced. The results show that males that had interacted with a female had a higher probability of becoming dominant and reversing contest outcome. Moreover, males that were faster to take over a vacant territory when the resident was removed were more likely to become dominant. Here, we show for the first time, to our knowledge, that frequent encounters with a mated female can increase male motivation to persist in a territorial contest in a butterfly. Further, we suggest that variation in intrinsic motivation reflects male eagerness to take over vacant territory. This study indicates that variation in resource value and motivational asymmetries are important for settling contests in butterflies.  相似文献

Across taxa, cooperative breeding has been associated with high reproductive skew. Cooperatively breeding golden lion tamarins (Leontopithecus rosalia) were long thought to have a monogynous mating system in which reproduction was limited to a single dominant female. Subordinates with few reproductive opportunities delayed dispersal and remained in the natal group to provide alloparental care to siblings, thus allowing dominant reproductive females to meet the energetic needs associated with high rates of reproduction and successful infant rearing. The goal of this study was to re-assess monogyny in wild golden lion tamarin groups based upon pregnancy diagnoses that used non-invasive enzyme immunoassay for progesterone and cortisol, combined with weekly data on individual weight gain, bi-annual physical examinations noting pregnancy and lactation status and daily behavioral observations. We established quantitative and qualitative criteria to detect and determine the timing of pregnancies that did not result in the birth of infants. Pregnancy polygyny occurred in 83% of golden lion tamarin groups studied. The loss of 64% of subordinate pregnancies compared to only 15% by dominant females limited reproductive success mainly to dominant females, thus maintaining high reproductive skew in female golden lion tamarins. Pregnancy loss by subordinate adults did not appear to result from dominant interference in subordinate hormonal mechanisms, but more likely resulted from subordinate abandonment of newborn infants to mitigate dominant aggression.  相似文献

Sexual dimorphism is commonly used to directly infer or support reconstructions of social behavior in early hominins. This is often done by comparing the magnitude of sexual size dimorphism to that seen in extant primates and extrapolating a likely social behavior. Such comparisons are of limited value, though, allowing only the inference of strong male–male competition when dimorphism is strong. Recent studies have begun to focus on the selective factors that impact female body size, and thereby size dimorphism. Considerations of changes in male and female size in the fossil record potentially allow insight into the meaning of changes in sexual dimorphism through time. To illustrate, I compare estimates of body mass dimorphism for four hominin taxa to assess changes in male and female size. Assuming that early Homo represents a single taxon, sexual size dimorphism increased in early Homo through an increase in male size, but was subsequently reduced through an increase in female size in Homo erectus. This would imply a significant increase in sexual selection acting on males in early Homo. An increase in female size with a loss of dimorphism in Homo erectus would imply a simultaneous shift in female optimal body size through selection for increased female fecundity, and/or an increase in female resource abundance, coupled with a shift in selection acting on male size. Although none of these inferences are certain, the exercise illustrates the potential for considering how dimorphism changes through time, rather than simply focusing on the magnitude of size dimorphism in isolation.  相似文献

The offspring of matings of rats having opposite or same-sided turning biases were tested for turning biases as adults and the degree of similarity to the parents' biases assessed. There were significant and equivalent tendencies for the male offspring to have the same bias as the male parent and the opposite bias as the female parent. Although, overall, female offspring were distributed randomly with respect to the parents' biases, a significant tendency for female offspring to have biases opposite those of the female parent was apparent in litters having more males than females. Based on reports indicating a relationship between the sex ratio of a litter and levels of testosterone in female fetuses, it was suggested that in utero exposure to testosterone reverses the coding of a heritable female influence and induces a tendency for the offspring to have biases opposite those of the female parent. The origins of sidedness in the rat appear to involve a complex interaction between heredity and hormones.  相似文献
