Microcavia australis is a semifossorial, diurnal and social rodent, native to South America. The objective was to determine and compare the composition of social groups, mating system and social behaviours of cavies in two populations of the Monte (El Leoncito and Ñacuñán). The two sites differ in climate conditions and plant resource availability. Trapping was carried out on 7–11 consecutive days at three times of the year (food abundance, food shortage, reproduction), from 2003 to 2005. Individuals were identified with metal ear tags. Continuous focal samplings were performed during 4 days. The female/male proportion per group was 1/1 at both sites which, together with the absence of sexual dimorphism in body size (0.94), the accomplishment of oestrus synchronization, the large size of scrotal testes during the reproductive season and sexual patterns, suggests a promiscuous mating system. Social groups were larger and with more adults at the site with more severe climate conditions (El Leoncito). The index of association among individuals was higher at El Leoncito. Cavies could use seismic communication to avoid encounters ending in fights at El Leoncito, and the agonistic behaviour was significantly lower in this population.  相似文献

Stature and the pattern of body proportions were investigated in a series of six time-successive Egyptian populations in order to investigate the biological effects on human growth of the development and intensification of agriculture, and the formation of state-level social organization. Univariate analyses of variance were performed to assess differences between the sexes and among various time periods. Significant differences were found both in stature and in raw long bone length measurements between the early semipastoral population and the later intensive agricultural population. The size differences were greater in males than in females. This disparity is suggested to be due to greater male response to poor nutrition in the earlier populations, and with the increasing development of social hierarchy, males were being provisioned preferentially over females. Little change in body shape was found through time, suggesting that all body segments were varying in size in response to environmental and social conditions. The change found in body plan is suggested to be the result of the later groups having a more tropical (Nilotic) form than the preceding populations.  相似文献

Numerous specimens of the majid spider crab, Encephaloides armstrongi, were sampled from six stations (populations) between 150 and 650 m depth, on the continental slope off the coast of Oman. This extended the known geographic and bathymetric range of E. armstrongi, which is now known to occur along the continental margins of the northern Indian Ocean from the western coast of Burma to the coast of Oman. This band-like distribution is contiguous to the oxygen minimum zone in this region. The biology and genetics of populations of Encephaloides armstrongi separated by depth were studied. The overall sex ratio of the E. armstrongi sampled was male-biased (p less than 0.01; 3.3 males: 1 female; So = 0.538). However, sex ratio varied both between populations (p less than 0.01) and between size classes of crabs. Size frequency analysis indicated that the male and female crabs consisted of at least two instars, one between 6 and 16mm carapace length and one between 16 and 29 mm carapace length, which probably represented the terminal (pubertal) moult for most individuals. Accumulation of female crabs in the terminal instar probably caused the variation of sex ratio with size classes. Some male crabs grew to a larger size (up to 38 mm carapace length), possibly as a result of maturity at later instars.Length frequency distribution was significantly different between sexes (one-way ANOVA p less than 0.001). Within sexes, length frequency distributions varied between different populations. In both male and female Encephaloides armstrongi the individuals from a single population located at 150 m depth were significantly smaller than individuals at all other stations and were considered to represent a juvenile cohort. For female crabs no other significant differences were detected in length frequency between populations from 300 m to 650 m depth. Significant differences in length frequency were detected between male crabs from populations between 300 and 650 m depth.Horizontal starch gel electrophoresis was used to detect six enzyme systems coding for eight loci for individuals sampled from each population of Encephaloides armstrongi. Genetic identity (I) values between populations of E. armstrongi (I = 0.98-1.00) were within the normal range for conspecific populations. Observed heterozygosity (Ho = 0.080-0.146) was lower than expected heterozygosity (He = 0.111-0.160), but in the normal range detected for eukaryotic organisms.F-statistics were used to analyse between population (FST) and within population (F ) genetic structure. For both male and female E. armstrongi significant genetic differentiation was detected between the population located at 150 m depth and all other populations. Analyses of FIS and FST, excluding the 150 m population indicated that for female E. armstrongi there was no significant structuring within or between populations. For male E. armstrongi significant heterozygote deficiencies were detected within populations and significant genetic differentiation between populations. The most likely explanations for the observations of the present study are: the population of Encephaloides armstrongi located at 150 m depth represented a juvenile cohort that is genetically distinct from deeper populations; female E. armstrongi formed a single population between 300 m and 650 m depth in the sampling area; male E. armstrongi were from two or more genetically distinct populations which are represented by different numbers of individuals at stations between 300 m and 650 m depth. This caused the observed significant differences in morphology (size distribition) and allele frequencies of male populations. It is likely that E. armstrongi exhibits gender-biased dispersal and that the crabs collected between 300 m and 650 m depth formed spawning aggressions. This also explains the bias in sex ratio of individuals sampled in the present study.  相似文献

An anadromous population (trachurus form) and three freshwater populations (leiurus form) of the three-spined stickleback,Gasterosteus aculeatus, in central Japan were compared with one another in the reproductive traits: body length at maturity, egg size, clutch size, the swell of abdomen and the number of eggs per nest. The anadromous fish which become larger in body size at maturity spawn eggs smaller in size and greater in number than the freshwater fish. The abdomen swell of gravid females expressed by the proportion of abdomen width to body length was greater in the freshwater fish. The anadromous male fish collected a mean of 2,638 eggs with a range of 1,119 to 4,052 eggs from about 6–7 females. In the three freshwater (the Yamayoke, the Tsuya and the Jizo) populations, males must have mated with about 9–22, 7–18 and 4–7 females respectively. It seems that theleiurus form increases its reproductive success by its much more mating opportunities and the parental efforts of nesting males as well as by spawning large eggs. Furthermore, among the freshwater populations, the Jizo one inhabiting the upper stream was clearly larger in body size, in egg size and in clutch size than the Yamayoke and the Tsuya ones which inhabit stable waterbodies with springs. It is possible that the Jizo population adopted the strategy of spawning a few large eggs as an adaptation to its habitat. The causal and functional explanations in reproductive characteristics among the four populations are discussed in regard to differences in the environmental conditions.  相似文献

Observations were made on two populations of the greater kudu (Tragelaphus strepsiceros) in Namibia to investigate the influence of differing management strategies (trophy hunting vs. venison production) on the population structure, behaviour and ecology of these antelope with regard to population persistence. The population structure on both study sites was similar despite different management strategies. However, the percentage of males in respective age classes differed significantly. All sex ratios were clearly female-biased, even though at birth they are close to parity, indicating sex- and age-specific mortality. Matriarchal groups were larger than groups led by bulls. The group size reached a maximum during the breeding season (rut). The male age classes accompanying females in this season differed strongly between the two study sites. The behavioural patterns shown by kudu over the course of a 12-h period (esp. feeding and locomotion) were also significantly different for the two populations. The results suggest that the management strategies can have an impact on behaviour and population structure of T. strepsiceros and may affect the overall fitness of the population.  相似文献

Life-history traits of Acrossocheilus fasciatus were examined using 384 specimens collected monthly during May 2009 and April 2010 in the Huishui Stream of the Qingyi watershed, China. Using scales for age determination, female and male fish comprised five and four age groups, respectively. The monthly changes in marginal increment ratio suggested that annuli on scales were formed during March through May. Total lengths back-calculated significantly increased with age for both sexes and varied significantly between the two sexes at each age. The fact that females had larger body size and grew faster than males indicated the sexual size dimorphism for this species. Both sexes got their 50% maturity at age 3, when females and males were 105.3 and 112.1?mm total length, respectively. Based on the monthly changes in the gonado-somatic index and egg-development process, fish spawned from April through August. Absolute fecundity ranged from 295 to 3,573 eggs per fish and increased significantly with age. But relative fecundity, ranging from 11.77 to 69.96?eggs/g, was not significantly different among age groups. Compared with the life-history traits of an upstream population in the Puxi Stream (a headwater stream within this study watershed), the downstream population of A. fasciatus in the Huishui Stream (a 4th-order stream) exhibits larger body size, faster somatic growth, later sexual maturity, and lower reproductive investment. These variations in life-history strategies between the two populations could perhaps be explained by the spatial heterogeneity in habitat environment along the upstream–downstream gradient in this watershed.  相似文献

Background

Men who have sex with men (MSM) are at high risk of HIV infection. For developing proper interventions, it is important to know the size of MSM population. However, size estimation of MSM populations is still a significant public health challenge due to high cost, hard to reach and stigma associated with the population.

Objectives

We aimed to estimate the social network size (c value) in general population and the size of MSM population in Shanghai, China by using the net work scale-up method.

Methods

A multistage random sampling was used to recruit participants aged from 18 to 60 years who had lived in Shanghai for at least 6 months. The “known population method” with adjustment of backward estimation and regression model was applied to estimate the c value. And the MSM population size was further estimated using an adjusted c value taking into account for the transmission effect through social respect level towards MSM.

Results

A total of 4017 participants were contacted for an interview, and 3907 participants met the inclusion criterion. The social network size (c value) of participants was 236 after adjustment. The estimated size of MSM was 36354 (95% CI: 28489–44219) for the male Shanghaies aged 18 to 60 years, and the proportion of MSM among the total male population aged 18 to 60 years in Shanghai was 0.28%.

Conclusions

We employed the network scale-up method and used a wide range of data sources to estimate the size of MSM population in Shanghai, which is useful for HIV prevention and intervention among the target population.  相似文献

Stag beetles usually have great intraspecific variation in their body sizes, which can be affected by both environmental and genetic factors. However, direct studies on wild-caught specimens may be insufficient to clarify such variation due to the confounding effects of ecological variance in natural habitats. To evaluate this, the stag beetle Aegus chelifer chelifer MacLeay, 1819 was collected from within two localities (Bangkok metropolitan area and Chanthaburi province) in Thailand and then reared under the same condition to investigate the differences in morphological characteristics between the wild-caught and captive-bred beetles and between the two geographical populations. Narrow-sense heritabilities (h2) of the observed traits in adults were not significant. Variation in the body size of captive-bred specimens was less than in the wild-caught specimens and the overlap of the body size variation between the two populations was lower in the captive-bred beetles. The Chanthaburi population had a significantly larger body size than the Bangkok population. Allometric slopes and intercepts were also significantly different between the two geographic populations. Captive-bred larvae showed similar relative growth rates, but male larvae from the Chanthaburi population had a longer feeding period, and so a larger adult body size, than those from the Bangkok population. The differences between the two populations could be explained by adaptation through larval performances and body size in order to respond to their habitats.  相似文献

Group living facilitates pathogen transmission among social hosts, yet temporally stable host social organizations can actually limit transmission of some pathogens. When there are few between-subpopulation contacts for the duration of a disease event, transmission becomes localized to subpopulations. The number of per capita infectious contacts approaches the subpopulation size as pathogen infectiousness increases. Here, we illustrate that this is the case during epidemics of highly infectious pneumonia in bighorn lambs (Ovis canadensis). We classified individually marked bighorn ewes into disjoint seasonal subpopulations, and decomposed the variance in lamb survival to weaning into components associated with individual ewes, subpopulations, populations and years. During epidemics, lamb survival varied substantially more between ewe-subpopulations than across populations or years, suggesting localized pathogen transmission. This pattern of lamb survival was not observed during years when disease was absent. Additionally, group sizes in ewe-subpopulations were independent of population size, but the number of ewe-subpopulations increased with population size. Consequently, although one might reasonably assume that force of infection for this highly communicable disease scales with population size, in fact, host social behaviour modulates transmission such that disease is frequency-dependent within populations, and some groups remain protected during epidemic events.  相似文献

Great European mountain ranges have acted as barriers to gene flow for resident populations since prehistory and have offered a place for the settlement of small, and sometimes culturally diverse, communities. Therefore, the human groups that have settled in these areas are worth exploring as an important potential source of diversity in the genetic structure of European populations. In this study, we present new high resolution data concerning Y chromosomal variation in three distinct Alpine ethno-linguistic groups, Italian, Ladin and German. Combining unpublished and literature data on Y chromosome and mitochondrial variation, we were able to detect different genetic patterns. In fact, within and among population diversity values observed vary across linguistic groups, with German and Italian speakers at the two extremes, and seem to reflect their different demographic histories. Using simulations we inferred that the joint effect of continued genetic isolation and reduced founding group size may explain the apportionment of genetic diversity observed in all groups. Extending the analysis to other continental populations, we observed that the genetic differentiation of Ladins and German speakers from Europeans is comparable or even greater to that observed for well known outliers like Sardinian and Basques. Finally, we found that in south Tyroleans, the social practice of Geschlossener Hof, a hereditary norm which might have favored male dispersal, coincides with a significant intra-group diversity for mtDNA but not for Y chromosome, a genetic pattern which is opposite to those expected among patrilocal populations. Together with previous evidence regarding the possible effects of “local ethnicity” on the genetic structure of German speakers that have settled in the eastern Italian Alps, this finding suggests that taking socio-cultural factors into account together with geographical variables and linguistic diversity may help unveil some yet to be understood aspects of the genetic structure of European populations.  相似文献

Various intrinsic factors connected to the special features of sociality influence the persistence of social insect populations, including low effective population size, reduced amount of genetic variation easily leading to inbreeding depression, and spatially structured populations. In this work, we studied an isolated, small and fragmented population system of the red wood ant Formica lugubris, and evaluated the impact of social and genetic population structure on the persistence and conservation of the populations. The effective population size was large in our study population because all nests were polygynous. As a result, and despite the apparent isolation, the amount of nuclear genetic variability was similar to that in a nonisolated population system. Lack of inbreeding, as well as a high level of variability, indirectly suggests that this population does not suffer from inbreeding depression. The spatial distribution of genetic variation between local populations suggests intensive, but strongly male-biased, nuclear gene flow. Thus, the persistence of this population system does not seem to be threatened by any immediate social or genetic factor, but colonization of new habitat patches may be difficult because of restricted female dispersal.  相似文献

Badgers are facultatively social, forming large groups at high density. Group-living appears to have high reproductive costs for females, and may lead to increased levels of inbreeding. The extent of female competition for reproduction has been estimated from field data, but knowledge of male reproductive success and the extent of extra-group paternity remains limited. Combining field data with genetic data (16 microsatellite loci), we studied the mating system of 10 badger social groups across 14 years in a high-density population. From 923 badgers, including 425 cubs, we were able to assign maternity to 307 cubs, with both parents assigned to 199 cubs (47%) with 80% confidence, and 14% with 95% confidence. Age had a significant effect on the probability of reproduction, seemingly as a result of a deficit of individuals aged two years and greater than eight years attaining parentage. We estimate that approximately 30% of the female population successfully reproduced in any given year, with a similar proportion of the male population gaining paternity across the same area. While it was known there was a cost to female reproduction in high density populations, it appears that males suffer similar, but not greater, costs. Roughly half of assigned paternity was attributed to extra-group males, the majority of which were from neighbouring social groups. Few successful matings occurred between individuals born in the same social group (22%). The high rate of extra-group mating, previously unquantified, may help reduce inbreeding, potentially making philopatry a less costly strategy.  相似文献

Data on the variation at eight microsatellite loci in the Far East salmon Oncorhynchus gorbuscha samples caught in 1984–1985 and 2001–2006 are analyzed. F-statistics indices at all levels of the hierarchical spatial structures are very small. At the same time, the differentiation between populations (according to F ST estimates) in the odd-year broodline of pink salmon does not exceed the temporal variation within populations. In the even-year broodline, the F-statistics indices at the interregional and intraregional levels are significantly greater than those in the odd-year broodline. F ST estimates (averaged over the same set of loci) vary widely within the range: the highest values are observed in populations of the coast of North America (except Alaska) and in the new range in the European North of Russia, whereas in the populations of the Asian part of the range and Alaska they are one order of magnitude smaller. The causes of the heterogeneity of the estimates of genetic differentiation within the range and between the broodlines of odd and even years are discussed. Since the mean population size estimates were correlated with the F ST values, it was assumed that the effect of random genetic drift, the main factor of population divergence in selectively neutral loci, weakens with an increase in the population size. Because of the greater population sizes in pink salmon compared to other salmon species, as well due to the uneven distribution of populations of different size, the usage of microsatellite markers may lead to an underestimation of the true divergence of populations and their regional groups and, consequently, to an overestimation of genetic migration.  相似文献

In recent decades, Melaleuca alternifolia has been grown in plantations for the commercial production of tea tree oil extracted from harvested leaf and stem material by steam distillation. Plantations are grown from seedlings raised from seeds collected from wild populations of this endemic Australian species. Considerable variation in morphology and leaf oil composition and yield has been observed and studies have demonstrated genetic and phenotypic heterozygosity between populations. Here we examine the variation in leaf oil chemical composition (chemotypes) between geographically defined locations of wild populations of M. alternifolia and investigate the relationships between tree size, chemotype and geographic location.Forty separate populations of M. alternifolia distributed amongst three river catchments (two in a warm moist coastal region and one in cool drier highlands) were studied. Total variation in tree size was significantly greater within individual sites than between them. However, the highland catchment populations exhibited significantly smaller mean tree size and a significantly different chemotype profile than the lowland populations. Contrary to the observation of lower genetic diversity, the highland catchment populations had greater chemotypic diversity. Furthermore, highly significant differences in population chemotypes were demonstrated between catchments. The possibilities that these differences could be ascribed to either genetic divergence or to environmental differences are discussed.  相似文献

We used data from 78 individuals at 26 microsatellite loci to infer parental and sibling relationships within a community of fish-eating ("resident") eastern North Pacific killer whales (Orcinus orca). Paternity analysis involving 15 mother/calf pairs and 8 potential fathers and whole-pedigree analysis of the entire sample produced consistent results. The variance in male reproductive success was greater than expected by chance and similar to that of other aquatic mammals. Although the number of confirmed paternities was small, reproductive success appeared to increase with male age and size. We found no evidence that males from outside this small population sired any of the sampled individuals. In contrast to previous results in a different population, many offspring were the result of matings within the same "pod" (long-term social group). Despite this pattern of breeding within social groups, we found no evidence of offspring produced by matings between close relatives, and the average internal relatedness of individuals was significantly less than expected if mating were random. The population's estimated effective size was <30 or about 1/3 of the current census size. Patterns of allele frequency variation were consistent with a population bottleneck.  相似文献

Objectives

To estimate the average social network size in the general population and the size of HIV key affected populations (KAPs) in Chongqing municipality using the network scale-up method (NSUM).

Methods

A general population survey was conducted in 2011 through a multistage random sampling method. Participants aged between 18 and 60 years were recruited. The average social network size (c) was estimated and adjusted by known population method. The size of HIV KAP in Chongqing municipality was estimated using the adjusted c value with adjustment for the transmission effect using the scaled respect factor.

Results

3,026 inhabitants of Chongqing agreed to the survey, and 2,957 (97.7%) completed the questionnaire. The adjusted c value was 310. The estimated size of KAP was 28,418(95% Confidence Interval (CI):26,636∼30,201) for female sex workers (FSW), 163,199(95%CI:156,490∼169,908) for clients of FSW, 37,959(95%CI: 34,888∼41,030) for drug users (DU), 14,975(95%CI:13,047∼16,904) for injecting drug users (IDU) and 16,767(95%CI:14,602∼18,932) for men who have sex with men (MSM). The ratio of clients to FSW was 5.74∶1, and IDU accounted for 39.5% of the DU population. The estimates suggest that FSW account for 0.37% of the female population aged 15–49 years in Chongqing, and clients of FSW and MSM represent 2.09% and 0.21% of the male population aged 15–49 years in the city, respectively.

Conclusion

NSUM provides reasonable population size estimates for FSW, their clients, DU and IDU in Chongqing. However, it is likely to underestimate the population size of MSM even after adjusting for the transmission effect.  相似文献

Ecological and social factors have a significant effect on infant survivorship in nonhuman primates. We present 6293 group-months of infant birth and mortality data for 29 groups of Alouatta caraya inhabiting a flooded forest in northeastern Argentina, collected over 1.5–8?yr depending on the group. We tested whether infant mortality was a response to the effects of flooding on food availability and whether male takeovers resulted in greater opportunities for infanticide. During our study, 43 of 113 infants died at a mean age of 5?mo. In 24 cases the cause of death was unknown. In the remaining 19 cases infant deaths were attributed to periods of intense flooding (N?=?8), replacement of the breeding male (N?=?8), problems associated with birth (N?=?2), and injuries during an intergroup encounter (N?=?1). Flooding reduced the availability of mature leaves, which appeared to play an important role in the ability of mothers to nurse their offspring. Male replacements occurred in four social groups that contained only one fully adult male. Infant mortality was significantly higher in groups that experienced male replacement compared to groups without male replacement. These results indicate that infant mortality in Alouatta caraya is affected by several factors—natural disasters, maternal condition and food availability, infanticide after male replacement, and possibly disease and predation—each of which needs to be evaluated to understand the history and demography of this primate population.

Distyly has been clearly confirmed in Polygonum hastato-sagittatum Mak, which is dimorphic for the intrinsic features of style height, anther height and a suite of ancillary pollen and stigma polymorphisms. The stigma width of long styled flowers is larger than that of short ones, and L-morph (long) stigmas have longer and less number of papillae than the S-morphs (short). Flowers produced significantly smaller pollen grains, but in greater numbers, in L-morph than in S-morph. In P. hastato-sagittatum, style-morph ratios were associated with population size: larger populations always exhibited 1:1 morph ratios, or were slightly L-biased, whereas smaller populations were often strongly L-biased, and only occasionally S-biased. Populations containing only the L-morph were occasionally found, but populations fixed for the S-morph were not observed. The biased style-morph ratios maybe result from morph-specific differences in assortative mating or artificial disturbance. The study supports the theory that evolution of heterostyly reduces the conflict that can occur in sexually monomorphic animal-pollinated species, achieving efficient cross-pollination but simultaneously avoiding self-interference between female and male sexual organs.  相似文献

Reduced genetic diversity can result in short-term decreases in fitness and reduced adaptive potential, which may lead to an increased extinction risk. Therefore, maintaining genetic variation is important for the short- and long-term success of reintroduced populations. Here, we evaluate how founder group size and variance in male reproductive success influence the long-term maintenance of genetic diversity after reintroduction. We used microsatellite data to quantify the loss of heterozygosity and allelic diversity in the founder groups from three reintroductions of tuatara ( Sphenodon ), the sole living representatives of the reptilian order Rhynchocephalia. We then estimated the maintenance of genetic diversity over 400 years (∼10 generations) using population viability analyses. Reproduction of tuatara is highly skewed, with as few as 30% of males mating across years. Predicted losses of heterozygosity over 10 generations were low (1–14%), and populations founded with more animals retained a greater proportion of the heterozygosity and allelic diversity of their source populations and founder groups. Greater male reproductive skew led to greater predicted losses of genetic diversity over 10 generations, but only accelerated the loss of genetic diversity at small population size (<250 animals). A reduction in reproductive skew at low density may facilitate the maintenance of genetic diversity in small reintroduced populations. If reproductive skew is high and density-independent, larger founder groups could be released to achieve genetic goals for management.  相似文献
