The positive and negative aspects that aging persons distinguish in different dimensions of the experience of their own aging process were studied. To examine the role of the aging experience in individual functioning, its relation with indicators of successful aging and well-being was focused on. The Dutch Aging Survey, using a representative sample of the present and future generations of elderly (40-85 years; N = 975), provided data on the experience of aging (positive and negative aspects, own aging as physical and social decline as well as continued growth), successful aging (health problems, loneliness and hope), and well-being (life satisfaction and positive and negative affect). Physical and social decline are the most prominent negative aspects and social gains and psychological growth are the most prominent positive aspects of one's own aging experience. The relation between aging experience and indicators of successful aging shows that individuals interpret their life situation in terms of their own aging process. Both negative and positive aspects of the aging experience are related to well-being, in particular for the group in transition to old age (55-69 years).  相似文献

In this study younger and older persons were compared with regard to their stereotypes about both age groups, their self-concept and self-esteem. We examined the relation between age and stereotypes about younger and older adults, the relation between stereotypes about one's own age group and self-concepts, and the relation between self-concepts and self-esteem. Stereotypes and self-concepts were measured on two dimensions, warmth and competence. Twenty-eight younger adults (16-25 years) and 26 older adults (65-85 years) participated in this study. Both age groups perceived younger persons as more competent than older persons and older persons as more warm than younger persons. Older persons rate themselves higher than their in-group on competence and warmth. Younger respondents did the same, but on warmth only. A rating of the own person as more competent than the stereotype of their own age group, is related to self-esteem for older persons. Distancing oneself from negative stereotypes about one's own age group is an important key in maintaining high levels of self-esteem, but only in old age.  相似文献

Introduction

Walking speed is a meaningful marker of physical function in the aging population. While it is a primarily physical measure, experimental studies have shown that merely priming older adults with negative stereotypes about aging results in immediate declines in objective walking speed. What is not clear is whether this is a temporary experimental effect or whether negative aging stereotypes have detrimental effects on long term objective health. We sought to explore the association between baseline negative perceptions of aging in the general population and objective walking speed 2 years later.

Method

4,803 participations were assessed over 2 waves of The Irish Longitudinal Study on Ageing (TILDA), a prospective, population representative study of adults aged 50+ in the Republic of Ireland. Wave 1 measures – which included the Aging Perceptions Questionnaire, walking speed and all covariates - were taken between 2009 and 2011. Wave 2 measures – which included a second measurement of walking speed and covariates - were collected 2 years later between March and December 2012. Walking speed was measured as the number of seconds to complete the Timed Up-And-Go (TUG) task. Participations with a history of stroke, Parkinson’s disease or an MMSE < 18 were excluded.

Results

After full adjustment for all covariates (age, gender, level of education, disability, chronic conditions, medications, global cognition and baseline TUG) negative perceptions of aging at baseline were associated with slower TUG speed 2 years later (B=.03, 95% CI = .01 to 05, p< .05).

Conclusions

Walking speed has previously been considered to be a consequence of physical decline but these results highlight the direct role of psychological state in predicting an objective aging outcome. Negative perceptions about aging are a potentially modifiable risk factor of some elements of physical decline in aging.  相似文献

Evolutionary pressure has selected individuals with traits that allow them to survive to reproduction, without consideration of the consequences for the post-child rearing years and old age. In the 21st century, society is populated increasingly by the elderly and with the falling birth rate and improved health care this trend is set to continue for the foreseeable future. To minimize the potential burden on health services one would hope that 'growing old gracefully' should also mean 'growing old healthily'. However, for too many the aging process is accompanied by increasing physical and mental frailty producing an elevated risk of physical and psychological stress in old age. Stress is a potent modulator of immune function, which in youth can be compensated for by the presence of an optimal immune response. In the elderly the immune response is blunted as a result of the decline in several components of the immune system (immune senescence) and a shifting to a chronic pro-inflammatory status (the so-called 'inflamm-aging' effect). We discuss here what is known of the effects of both stress and aging upon the innate immune system, focusing in particular upon the age-related alterations in the hypopituitary-adrenal axis. We propose a double hit model for age and stress in which the age-related increase in the cortisol/sulphated dehydroepiandrosterone ratio synergizes with elevated cortisol during stress to reduce immunity in the elderly significantly.  相似文献

To study the response of the cardiovascular system, to exercise tolerance in-patients over 75 years old with coronary heart disease (CHD), and to evaluate the significance of the parameters of the treadmill exercise test (TET). 110 patients received TET and coronary artery angiography. They were divided into two groups: the elderly patients group included 50 patients over 75 years old, and the control group included 60 patients under 60 years old. (1) With aging, there were much more CHD patients in the positive TET (P < 0.05) than in the negative TET (P > 0.05). (2) The parameters of TET for the elderly CHD patients group, included exercise time, peak heart rate, and the onset of ST depression, were lower than the control group (P < 0.05). There was no statistical significance between the two groups in the extent and duration of ST depression (P < 0.05). (1) In TET, the elderly patients had the higher diagnostic value on CHD. (2) The elderly patients with CHD had the lower endurance to exercise test.  相似文献

We continued our effort to make a comprehensive database (LISTA) for the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae. As in previous editions the genetic names are consistently associated to each sequence with a known and confirmed ORF. If necessary, synonyms are given in the case of allelic duplicated sequences. Although the first publication of a sequence gives-according to our rules-the genetic name of a gene, in some instances more commonly used names are given to avoid nomenclature problems and the use of ancient designations which are no longer used. In these cases the old designation is given as synonym. Thus sequences can be found either by the name or by synonyms given in LISTA. Each entry contains the genetic name, the mnemonic from the EMBL data bank, the codon bias, reference of the publication of the sequence, Chromosomal location as far as known, SWISSPROT and EMBL accession numbers. New entries will also contain the name from the systematic sequencing efforts. Since the release of LISTA4.1 we update the database continuously. To obtain more information on the included sequences, each entry has been screened against non-redundant nucleotide and protein data bank collections resulting in LISTA-HON and LISTA-HOP. This release includes reports from full Smith and Watermann peptide-level searches against a non-redundant protein sequence database. The LISTA data base can be linked to the associated data sets or to nucleotide and protein banks by the Sequence Retrieval System (SRS). The database is available by FTP and on World Wide Web.  相似文献

Objective: Bariatric surgery is not usually recommended in the elderly. The aim of this study is to evaluate the safety and efficacy of laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding (LAGB) in older patients registered in the database of the Italian Group for Lap‐Band Gruppo Italiano Lap‐Band (GILB). Methods and Procedures: GILB is a centralized database which collects operative and follow‐up data from 26 Italian surgical centers who utilize the Lap‐Band System as a restrictive procedure. Patients ≥60 years were selected from the database of the GILB and analyzed according to co‐morbidities, conversion, peri‐operative complications, and weight loss. Results: Of 5,290 patients, 216 (4.1%; 184F/32M) were ≥60 years old at surgery (mean age 64.1 ± 4.0 years; range 60–83). Baseline BMI was similar in both sets of patients i.e., ≥60 and <60 years of age (44.2 ± 7.6 kg/m2 vs. 44.9 ± 7.4 kg/m2). Patients ≥60 years of age were more frequently affected by co‐morbidities than patients <60 years of age. Two cases of operative mortality were observed in patients <60 years old (0.04%) and one in patients ≥60 years old (0.46%). The proportion of patients requiring revision surgery was comparable as well. Weight loss was significantly lower in elderly patients. Despite their lower weight loss, patients ≥60 years of age experienced a significant improvement of obesity‐related co‐morbidities (they showed improvement 1 year after surgery in 100% of cases of diabetes or sleep apnoea, 67.1% of cases of hypertension, and 34.9% of cases of osteoarthritis). Discussion: LAGB may be performed safely in patients ≥60 years old. Weight loss in older patients seems unsatisfactory if compared to younger subjects. However, the majority of elderly patients show an improvement in obesity‐related co‐morbidities.  相似文献

Children’s emotion word comprehension (EWC) has constantly received a great deal of attention in developmental science. However, since previous reports focused on only English emotion vocabulary, researchers thus far remained unclear as to the developmental trajectories of EWC (to Chinese emotion words) in Chinese children, let alone the cross-cultural difference of EWC in different languages (i.e., English V.S. Chinese). Furthermore, the influence of valence on EWC, as well as the interaction mechanism between EWC and empathy, has not been fully investigated. Finding answers to these research gaps has become the main motivation of the current study. For this purpose, a Chinese emotion vocabulary was first constructed to estimate EWC of Chinese children (ages 2–13 years old). Then, the valence of each emotion word was evaluated using the standard 9-point scale approach. After that, the Chinese children’s EWC and empathy were measured in terms of parental ratings. Finally, all data collected were statistically analyzed to reveal the influence of the valence of EWC, the relation between EWC and empathy, and the cross-cultural difference of children’s EWC between China and UK from the viewpoint of developmental science. The main results of the current study included the following: (i) EWC in general increased with age for Chinese children ages 2–13 years old, however, there was a dramatic increase during ages 6–8 years old; (ii) EWC of positive emotion words in general developed better than that of negative and neutral ones for Chinese children (ages 2–13 years old); and the disadvantage of EWC to negative emotion words over neutral ones was gradually observed with the increase of age, even though there were no significant differences between them from the beginning; (iii) EWC completely mediated the effect of age on empathy; and (iv) EWC of children in UK developed better than Chinese counterparts during the early childhood period (ages 4–6 years old), then Chinese counterparts developed better during the middle childhood period (ages 7–10 years old), however, there was no significant difference of EWC between both groups during the late childhood period (ages 11–12 years old).  相似文献

Over the past century there has been a large and continuing increase in the frequency of persons aged over 65 years; particularly those aged over 100 years. During the 21st century the number of persons over 100 years will continue to increase. This will occur at such a rapid rate that the 21st century may one day be called the century of centenarians. Frailty and disability secondary to senescence, disease, and trauma have accompanied old age (often defined as age 65 and over) as far back as recorded history. However, during the 20th century, age, frailty, disability, and chronic degenerative diseases have been decoupled to some extant in the most long-lived human populations. Until recently, there was little need to design artificial environments for the unique needs of the elderly due to their low representation in most national populations. Today that need is increasing in concert with the number of persons aged 65 and older.The purpose of this review is to suggest areas wherein physiological anthropologists may have an opportunity to contribute to design trends for this rapidly increasing aging population. Major considerations for design of environments for the elderly are based upon altering the environment to accommodate their declining visual, auditory, and kinesthetic senses, thereby enhancing their declining faculties and improving their autonomy, independence, and self perceptions of well-being. To date most design considerations have been directed toward improving environments for those suffering from Alzheimer's disease or residing within assisted living facilities. Many such design improvements also may be effective in improving life satisfaction and functional abilities of the non-institutionalized elderly.  相似文献

Background

The study of aging processes and the changes in morphological, physiological, and functional characteristics that are associated with aging is of great interest not only for researchers, but also for the general public. The aim of the present paper is to study the biological age and tempos of aging in women older than 60 years, including long-lived females (over 90-years-old), and their associations with morphofunctional characteristics.

Results

Somatic traits, body mass components, and functional characteristics were investigated in 119 elderly (between 60 and 74-years-old) and long-lived (over 90-years-old) women in Tiraspol. With the special PC software ‘Diagnostics of Aging: BioAge’ (National Gerontological Center, Moscow, Russia) the biological age and tempos of aging were evaluated in the study participants. The results show close connections between morphofunctional changes, particularly in body mass components, and biological age. The software demonstrated its validity in the estimation of biological age in the group of elderly women. In the homogenous (according to their chronological age) group of women, three subgroups were separated with different tempos of aging: those with lower rates of aging (biological age less than chronological age by two years or more); those consistent with their chronological age, and those with accelerated tempos of aging (biological age higher than chronological age by two years or more).

Conclusions

Morphofunctional characteristics in the studied groups of women demonstrate the trends of age-involutive changes which can be traced through all groups, from those with slow rates of aging, to those with average rates, to those with accelerated tempos of aging, and finally in long-lived women. The results of comparative analysis show that women with accelerated aging are characterized with such traits as lower skeletal muscle mass, lower hand grip strength, and higher metabolic rate. Canonical discriminant analysis revealed a number of morphofunctional characteristics which differentiate the early-aging women from women with average rates of aging: higher BMI values, excessive fat mass, lower skeletal muscle mass and low values of hand grip strength. Thus the presence of such characteristics in elderly women can be considered as additional risk factor towards the early onset of the aging process.  相似文献

Birds exhibit exceptional longevity and are thus regarded as a convenient model to study the intrinsic mechanisms of aging. The oxidative stress theory of aging suggests that individuals age because molecules, cells, tissues, organs, and, ultimately, animals accumulate oxidative damage over time. Accumulation of damage progressively reduces the level of antioxidant defences that are expected to decline with age. To test this theory, we measured the resistance of red blood cells to free radical attack in a captive population of greater flamingo (Phoenicopterus ruber roseus) of known age ranging from 0.3 to 45 years. We observed a convex relationship with young adults (12–20 years old) having greater resistance to oxidative stress than immature flamingos (5 months old) and old flamingos (30–45 years old). Our results suggest that the antioxidant detoxifying system must go through a maturation process before being completely functional. It then declines in older adults, supporting the oxidative theory of aging. Oxidative stress could hence play a significant role in shaping the pattern of senescence in a very long-lived bird species.  相似文献

目的:探讨中老年男性患者血脂代谢特点及与年龄等因素的相关性。方法:资料来自2006年6月于我院干部门诊进行健康查体的1603例中老年男性患者(排除正在服用降脂药物的患者),采用全自动生化分析仪对血清总胆固醇(TC)、血清甘油三酯(TG)、血清低密度脂蛋白胆固醇(LDL-c)、血清高密度脂蛋白胆固醇(HDL-c)、空腹血糖(FBG)、血肌酐(Cr)及血尿酸(UA)等指标进行测定,同时记录身高、体重及血压等基本资料。结果:入选患者血脂异常总检出率为56.27%,其中TC、TG、HDL-c及LDL-c异常检出率分别为36.74%、28.20%、10.79%及6.92%,以TC、TG异常为主。与50~59岁组相比,80岁以上高龄老年组TG异常及HDL-c异常检出率显著降低,TC及TG水平显著降低,HDL-c水平显著升高(P<0.05)。在校正BMI、SBP、DBP、UA、FBG及CCr等危险因素影响后的多元线性回归分析发现,年龄每升高10岁,TC、TG分别降低约0.097 mmol/L及0.087 mmol/L,HDL-c升高约0.113 mmol/L。结论:中老年男性患者血脂异常以高TC和高TG为主,TC、TG与年龄呈负相关,HDL-c与年龄呈正相关,需针对高龄老年患者血脂代谢特点进行合理调脂治疗。  相似文献

Definitions of so-called older age often are based on a chronological age of 65 years and over, although by some authors aging is the process that starts after the 30th year of life. At the beginning occur changes in the organ functions, followed by anatomical changes as well. Some organs age faster, some slower. For example, kidneys decrease for one third, lungs do not change, liver shrinks a little, prostate increases twice. In some cross-sectional studies, muscle mass in men aged 65 is on average 12 kg less than in the so-called middle age, and in women it is approximately 5 kg less. In the heart the amount of connective tissue increases, lipofuscin is deposited in cardiac muscle, the strength of which is decreasing. In the respiratory tract the number of pathways cilia decreases, along with the alveolar surface, muscles involved in breathing change, lung elasticity is also diminished. But, in regard with the previous body capacity, "physiological aging" can be divided into three types of elderly: the "older" elderly have the highest functional capacity of 2-3 MET (MET--metabolic unit, i.e. the oxygen consumption of 3.5 ml/kg body mass in a minute), the "younger" elderly are the persons of older age having maximal functional capacity of 5-7 MET, while the "sport" elderly have the functional capacity of 9-10 MET, disregarding chronological age. The brain weight diminishes for approximately 7% compared to younger age. In temporal gyrus and area striata even 20-40% of cells are being lost, vacuolar and neuroaxonal degeneration occurs, lipofuscin is being accumulated. The brain blood flow, which is in normal conditions 50-60 ml/min/100 g of tissue, with the increase of biological age decreases to about 40 ml/min/100 g of tissue. However, this usually is not the consequence of biological age but of disease. A chronological age of 65 for the beginning of "elder hood" is a sociopolitical construct developed by social security systems and government organizations to decide an arbitrary age at which benefits should be paid. Thus, it neither a border nor do changes designating old age occurs exactly with that "age border". The changes in the organism during the so-called aging are individual. So, the functional capacity of an organism, both physical and intellectual, must be evaluated individually, having in mind biological age.  相似文献

Changes in hematological and serum chemistry values have been identified among older compared to younger humans. We hypothesized that healthy bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) 30 years and older may demonstrate similar clinicopathological changes with increasing age. Retrospective hematological and serum chemistry data generated from routine, fasted blood samples collected over 10 to 20 years among six healthy dolphins that lived at least 40 years were analyzed to (1) assess linear trends in blood variable values with increasing age, (2) compare mean blood values by older age categories (30–35 years, 36–40 years, and >40 years), and (3) compare the prevalence of clinically high or low blood values by older age categories. Absolute lymphocytes, serum globulins, and mean platelet volume increased linearly with increasing old age. Mean white blood cells, neutrophils, serum globulins, erythrocyte sedimentation rates, serum cholesterol, and serum triglycerides; and the prevalence of neutrophilic leukocytosis, hyperglobulinemia, and hypercholesterolemia, were more likely to be higher as geriatric dolphins got older. A linear decrease in serum albumin with increasing age was present for five of six animals. Serum creatinine decreased among dolphins older than 40 years compared to when they were 30–40 years old. Our study demonstrates that older dolphins have changes in hematological and serum chemistry values similar to those found in older humans. As such, bottlenose dolphins may serve as a useful comparative model for aging in humans. Further studies are needed to assess whether these changes are associated with negative health outcomes and whether targeted therapeutics can help improve quality of life among aging dolphins.  相似文献

The status of the 15 European and Mediterranean species and subspecies of Lithobiidae described by Verhoeff which are represented by material in the Verhoeff Collection of Myriapoda in the British Museum (Natural History) is evaluated. It is concluded that Lithobius fasciatus graecus is a junior synonym of Eupolybothrus litoralis (L. Koch), Polybothrus cerberus brentanus a junior synonym of Eupolybothrus tridentinus (Fanzago) and Lithobius pachypus a junior synonym of Hessebius barbipes (Porat); Lithobius corcyraeus and Lithobius forjicatus calamatanus are both junior synonyms of Lithobius viriatus Sseliwanoff; Lithobius pusillus var. parvus and Lithobius audax jaqueti are both junior synonyms of, and Lithobius borisi a subspecies of, Lithobius erythrocephalus C. L. Koch; Lithobius leostygis and Lithobius herzegowinensis are both valid species of Eupolybothrus Verhoeff; and Lithobius forjicatus parietum, Lithobius erythrocephalus cerberi, Lithobius acuminatus cassinensis and Lithobius trebinjanus are all valid species of Lithobius Leach. The status of Lithobius vosseleri is still undecided. The specimens of all but the well-known species are fully described and, where appropriate, lectotypes are selected.  相似文献

Accumulation of DNA damage is implicated in aging. This is supported by the fact that inherited defects in DNA repair can cause accelerated aging of tissues. However, clear-cut evidence for DNA damage accumulation in old age is lacking. Numerous studies report measurement of DNA damage in nuclear and mitochondrial DNA from tissues of young and old organisms, with variable outcomes. Variability results from genetic differences between specimens or the instability of some DNA lesions. To control these variables and test the hypothesis that elderly organisms have more oxidative DNA damage than young organisms, we measured 8,5'-cyclopurine-2'-deoxynucleosides (cPu), which are relatively stable, in tissues of young and old wild-type and congenic progeroid mice. We found that cPu accumulate spontaneously in the nuclear DNA of wild-type mice with age and to a greater extent in DNA repair-deficient progeroid mice, with a similar tissue-specific pattern (liver > kidney > brain). These data, generated under conditions where genetic and environmental variables are controlled, provide strong evidence that DNA repair mechanisms are inadequate to clear endogenous lesions over the lifespan of mammals. The similar, although exaggerated, results obtained from progeroid, DNA repair-deficient mice and old normal mice support the conclusion that DNA damage accumulates with, and likely contributes to, aging.  相似文献
