Summary

From 1723 to 1796 the Society of Apothecaries of London presented annually to the Royal Society of London 50 dried specimens of plants grown the previous year in the Chelsea Physic Garden, this being a condition of Sir Hans Sloane's deed of gift of the Garden to the Apothecaries in 1722. These herbarium specimens are now in the Department of Botany, British Museum (Natural History), London. Many represent plants recorded in successive editions of Philip Miller's Gardeners Dictionary and, together with Miller's own specimens also in the British Museum (Natural History) and Ehret's drawings, may serve to typify binomials published in the 8th edition (1768) of his Dictionary. They were listed from 1723 to 1774 in the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society; the lists here contain six long-overlooked binomials Galium verrucosum Huds. (syn. G. valantia Weber), Gypsophila pilosa Huds. (syn. G. porrigens (L.) Boiss), Briza pinnata Huds. (= Demazeria sicula (Jacq.) Dumort.) Euphorbia hispanica Huds. (= E. esula var. lanceolata Gren. & Godron), Pteris cheusanica Curtis (= P. ensiformis Burm. f.) and Saxifraga stolonifera Curtis (syn. S. sarmentosa L.). The deed of conveyance is printed as an appendix.  相似文献

We describe unpublished material of the poorly known hyracoid, Brachyhyrax aequatorialis from the Early Miocene of Songhor and Koru, Kenya, on the basis of specimens stored in the Community Museums of Kenya, the National Museums of Kenya and the Natural History Museum, London. As a result, we added 17 specimens to the hypodigm of this species which was previously known from only seven specimens. In addition, we describe further material of another hyracoid, Afrohyrax championi, from the Early Miocene of Mfwangano and the Middle Miocene of Kipsaraman. The chronological distributions of the two hyracoids do not overlap. Brachyhyrax appears to have lived in forest environments, a suggestion supported by its brachyodont dentition and the associated molluscan fauna, whereas Afrohyrax seems to have lived in more open wooded habitats which agree with its slightly more hypsodont dentition and the cursorial postcranial skeleton as well as with the land snails that occur with it.  相似文献

Comparative analysis was performed of morphological characters and coloration elements in goatfish of the genus Mullus from collections of the Zoological Museum (Moscow State University, Russian Academy of Sciences), on the basis of which individuals from Atlantic waters off the coasts of western Africa were identified as M. argentinae. Brief characteristics of all valid species of the genus are presented; the main diagnostic characters include: ratio between the length of the barbels and pectoral fins, number of pyloric caeca, and the presence of a dark spot (or stripe) in the upper part of dorsal fin. The Mediterranean populations of M. surmuletus are separated as a special subspecies M. surmuletus fuscatus, and M. argentinae from eastern Atlantic is described as a new subspecies M. argentinae africanus.  相似文献

There has been no previous systematic statewide study of mosquitoes in Mississippi. This survey, resulting in the collection of over 400,000 specimens, was conducted by the authors from 2003 to 2007 throughout much of the state using CO2‐baited CDC light traps and larval dipping. In addition, a health department contract mosquito surveillance technician collected several thousand specimens from the state from 2001 to 2003. Lastly, specimens housed at the Mississippi State University Entomological Museum, obtained from previous surveys, were included as vouchers for species occurring in the state. The collection records and literature show 60 species as occurring or having occurred in Mississippi. Voucher specimens representing 57 of the 60 species discussed are deposited in the Mississippi Entomological Museum or in the U.S. National Museum of Natural History (USNM), Washington, D.C.  相似文献

Synopsis The literature on shark attacks in freshwaters of southern Iran is reviewed and 11 attacks with 3 fatalities recorded from local informants for the period 1953 to 1985. The species of shark responsible is probably the bull shark, Carcharhinus leucas, whose presence in the Tigris River is confirmed by preserved specimens in the British Museum (Natural History). The Iranian records represent a significant proportion (28%) of the documented cases world-wide for unprovoked, freshwater attacks.  相似文献

The ear region of the pen-tailed treeshrew, Ptilocercus lowii Gray, 1848 (Scandentia, Ptilocercidae), is described and illustrated in detail based on five museum specimens from the National Museum of Natural History, two with the auditory bulla removed exposing the intratympanic surfaces. Soft tissues (arteries, veins, nerves, and muscles) are reconstructed onto the adult skulls based on published reports of these elements in a fetal P. lowii. Comparisons are made with four specimens of the common treeshrew, the tupaiid Tupaia glis (Diard, 1820), from the Carnegie Museum of Natural History, including one with the auditory bulla removed. The mammalian ear region widely is regarded to be a rich source of characters for phylogenetic analysis. This study supports this view by identifying numerous features that are shared between the two treeshrews as well as numerous features that distinguish them. Several features used in the past to distinguish tupaiid treeshrews from primates are found to differ between P. lowii and T. glis: the composition of the bony tubes for the internal carotid artery and the composition of the intrabullar septa and spaces. Despite the compositional differences, it seems likely that the bony carotid tubes and intrabullar septa and spaces shared by P. lowii and T. glis occurred in their common ancestor. Evaluating the utility of these and other ear region features awaits future phylogenetic analysis of treeshrews and related Euarchontoglires.  相似文献

ABSTRACT.   For some populations of Dunlins ( Calidris alpina ), determining the age of individuals on the nonbreeding grounds can be difficult. This difficulty arises in part because some populations undergo their primary molt during the boreal summer, leaving adult and first-year Dunlins with similar amounts of abrasion on their primaries. Ageing Dunlins is further complicated by the presence of adults with buff-fringed, inner median coverts in some populations, a feature often used to age juvenile Dunlins. We examined a number of characteristics helpful in the ageing Dunlins at nonbreeding areas along the East Asian-Australasian Flyway, including: (1) the pattern of white fringes on the inner primary coverts, (2) the color of fringes on the inner median wing coverts, (3) the color of the tip on the carpal covert, (4) the presence or absence of a dark subterminal band on tertial or tertial coverts, and (5) remnants of alternate or juvenile plumage on the belly. Our results demonstrate that the pattern of white fringes on the inner primary coverts is an important character for ageing Dunlin along the East Asian-Australasian Flyway. In addition, we found that all characteristics used for ageing fade with time, and that breeding adults along the East Asian-Australasian Flyway are more difficult to age than adults elsewhere, in part due to the presence of "adult buff" coverts (ABCs) and in part because of the early timing of primary molt. Finally, we suggest that the presence of ABCs might be useful for differentiating the two Dunlin subspecies ( C. a. arcticola and C. a. pacifica ) occurring in Alaska.  相似文献

In recent years, two major questions concerning the phyletic relationships and systematic position of the douc langurs have arisen. These concern, firstly, the taxonomic level at which the doucs as a group should be distinguished and, secondly, the number of taxa of doucs that should be recognized. It has recently been demonstrated on the basis of an exhaustive phylogenetic analysis that the doucs are generically distinct from the snub-nosed langurs and that they should be referred to as species of Pygathrix and Rhinopithecus, respectively [Jablonski and Peng, Folia Primatologica 60:36–55, 1993]. The present investigation was directed toward testing this conclusion using an expanded data set and a different method of character coding, and toward addressing the question as to the number of species or subspecies of doucs that should be recognized. A wide variety of data from large samples of doucs (n = 38), snub-nosed langurs (n = 53), and an out group (macaques; n = 191) were assembled, coded, and analyzed using an interactive computerized program for phylogenetic analysis. The specimens of Pygathrix examined included skeletal specimens, skins, and, when possible, living animals representing the three recognized taxa of doucs, nemaeus nigripes, and moi. The data base for the study comprised 178 characters, including measurements of skeletal specimens (98 characters), qualitative (presence or absence) morphological features (36 characters), characteristics of the pelage (39 characters), and 5 miscellaneous characters. The conclusions of the study were that 1) as a group, the taxa of Pygathrix preserved a larger number of primitive features for the Pygathrix-Rhino-pithecus clade than did the taxa of Rhinopithecus; 2) the taxa of Pygathrix were less different from one another than are the species of Rhinopithecus were from one another; 3) the subspecies Pygathrix nemaeus moi Kloss, 1926 be synonymized with Pygathrix nemaeus nigripes, as suggested by Napier [Catalogue of Primates in the British Museum (Natural History) and Elsewhere in the British Isles. Port III Family Cercopithecidae, Sub-Family Colobinae. London, 1985]; 4) the extant doucs were best recognized as two subspecies, P. nemaeus nemaeus for the red-shanked douc and P. nemaeus nigripes for the black-shanked douc; and 5) the phylogeny of the doucs and snub-nosed langurs proposed by Jablonski and Peng[op cit.,1993] was found to be robust. © 1995 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

Parapatric A. tachiro sparsimfasciatus and A. toussenelii canescens are in a size cline from large east African to small west African birds. While their plumage colour is different, the pattern of spotting (juvenile) and barring (adult) of the breast feathers is similar. No general hybridisation is found in the contact region in Kivu: the plumage of some aberrant individuals can be due to great age or to individual variation. One supposed hybrid was obtained far from the contact region. I consider them as paraspecies. Based on direct evidence and on annual moult I conclude that the breeding period is prolonged in both taxa in equatorial DR Congo, and that it is seasonal in tachiro sparsimfasciatus in southern DR Congo. In the latter population, the postjuvenile moult starts probably just before the age of one year but it lasts many months, leaving the juvenile upper tail coverts in place for one more year. Plumage characteristics are related to habitat. The female of the woodland sparsimfasciatus is cryptically coloured, with individual variation, possibly helpful for 'image avoidance'. The male is even more variable in colour, in part age related: a 'sepia' morph is described for the first adult plumage. Older birds are grey with reddish flanks, becoming darker with age. The adult evergreen forest canescens shows enforcement of colourful advertising plumage and loss of sexual plumage dimorphism. The first adult is advertised by the late moult of the barred juvenile flank feathers in both sexes. Its juvenile is peculiar; it lacks breast spots, suggesting image avoidance, but possibly also character displacement or mimicry.  相似文献
