The present study was focused on field research to examine the phytoremediation potential of naturally grown Eichhornia crassipes in fly ash (FA) pond. Field results indicate the efficiency of E. crassipes for remediation of heavy metals from FA pond. The bioconcentration factor trend was Cr (3.75) > Cu (2.62) > Cd (1.05), and Cu (1.35) in root and stem, respectively. The survival and abundance growth of E. crassipes in the circumstance of heavy metal enriched FA pond is another highlight of the present research that reveals its toxitolerant characteristics. Thus, this lesson on phytoremediation proved that E. crassipes is a potential accumulator of Cu, Cr, and Cd from FA ponds and is a promising species for FA pond's remediation globally. 相似文献

AbstractIn the present study, the effectiveness of water hyacinth and water lettuce was tested for the phytoremediation of landfill leachate for the period of 15?days. Fifteen plastic containers were used in experimental setup where aquatic plants were fitted as a floating bed with the help of thermo-pole sheet. It was observed that both plants significantly (p?<?0.05/p?<?0.01/p?<?0.001) reduce the physicochemical parameters pH, TDS, BOD, COD and heavy metals like Zn, Pb, Fe, Cu and Ni from landfill leachate. Maximum reduction in these parameters was obtained at 50% and 75% landfill leachate treatment and their removal rate gradually increased from day 3 to day 15 of the experiment. The maximum removal rate for heavy metals such as for Zn (80–90%), Fe (83–87%) and Pb (76–84%) was attained by Eichhornia crassipes and Pistia stratiotes. Value of bioconcentration and translocation factor was less than 1 which indicates the low transport of heavy metals from roots to the above-ground parts of the plants. Both these plants accumulate heavy metals inside their body without showing much reduction in growth and showing tolerance to all the present metals. Therefore, results obtained from the study suggest that these aquatic plants are suitable candidate for the removal of pollution load from landfill leachate. 相似文献

Field and laboratory observations show that the growth of Pistia alters markedly the physico-chemical condition of its substrate. The nature of this effect in the field is suggested to depend on the cover of the vegetation. A large and dense mat insulates the water below it against solar radiation and causes stratification and poor oxygenation. The effects of a thin vegetation are the opposite of these. 相似文献

Toxicity of the effluent generated at the Rajrappa coal mine complex under the Central Coalfields Limited (CCL, a subsidiary of Coal India Limited) in Jharkhand, India was investigated. The concentrations (mg L?1) of all the toxic metals (Fe, Mn, Ni, Zn, Cu, Pb, Cr, and Cd) in the coal mine effluent were above the safe limit suggested by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA 2003). Among these, Fe showed the highest concentration (18.21 ± 3.865), while Cr had the lowest effluent concentration (0.15 ± 0.014). Efforts were also made to detoxify the effluent using two species of aquatic macrophytes namely “‘Salvinia molesta and Pistia stratiotes.” After 10 days of phytoremediation, S. molesta removed Pb (96.96%) > Ni (97.01%) > Cu (96.77%) > Zn (96.38%) > Mn (96.22%) > Fe (94.12%) > Cr (92.85%) > Cd (80.99%), and P. stratiotes removed Pb (96.21%) > Fe (94.34%) > Ni (92.53%) > Mn (85.24%) > Zn (79.51%) > Cr (78.57%) > Cu (74.19%) > Cd (72.72%). The impact of coal mine exposure on chlorophyll content showed a significant decrease of 42.49% and 24.54% from control values in S. molesta and P. stratiotes, respectively, perhaps due to the damage inflicted by the toxic metals, leading to the decay of plant tissues. 相似文献

A study on the decomposition process of Pistia stratiotes L. was carried out in Cisne Reservoir, Uruguay. For this purpose, leaves and roots were considered separately, and the process was studied in the littoral and the pelagic zone. The litter bag technique was used to estimate dry weight losses at different times. Leaves decomposed faster than roots in both zones. Pistia decomposed faster in the pelagic zone due to better oxygen conditions and a more intensive water movement that removes material from within the bags. Phosphorus, potassium, sodium and magnesium were leached rapidly during the first week. Nitrogen content in the leaves initially increased, reaching its maximum in the littoral zone that coincided with that of bacterial numbers colonizing the litter. The number of macroinvertebrates, dominated by Chironomidae, was low. A rough estimation of the phosphorus impact on the littoral zone associated to the decomposition process shows that after 24 h between 13.9 and 16.8 μg-at.1−1 have been released to the water. 相似文献

AbstractThe aim of the present work is to estimate remediation potential of Pistia stratiotes, its ability to uptake mesotrione (MES) - one of the most frequently used herbicides, and its main degradation products: 2-amino-4-methylsulfonyl benzoic acid (AMBA) and 4-methylsulfonyl-2-nitrobenzoic acid (MNBA). This research focuses on model experiments performed under laboratory conditions. The results show that Pistia stratiotes can uptake up to 75% of degradation products from 1?L of surface water samples polluted with 0.4?µg/L of each analyte during 7?days without significant phytotoxic effect. Under the same experimental conditions, the effectiveness of mesotrione sorption is in the range of 42–58%. The phytotoxicity of this compound is higher in comparison to its degradation products (decrease of chlorophyll concentration in plant tissues exposed to MES 27–32% vs 4–13% in case of exposition to AMBA and MNBA). The adequate nutrition of the plants is crucial to their well-being and thus the sorption of pollutants. 相似文献

This paper elucidates the phytoremediation potential of water hyacinth and water lettuce on the reduction of wastewater toxicity. Acute toxicity tests were performed in an aquarium with a population of Sarotherodon melanotheron, contaminated by different concentrations of wastewaters before and after phytoremediation with Eichhornia crassipes and Pistia stratiotes. Lethal concentrations (LC50) of the fish's population obtained during 24 hours of exposures were determined. COD, BOD, ammonium, TKN and PO43? concentrations in wastewaters were of 1850.29, 973.33, 38.34, 61.49 and 39.23 mg L?1, respectively, for each plant. Phytoremediation reduced 58.87% of ammonium content, 50.04% of PO43?, 82.45% of COD and 84.91% of BOD. After 15 days of the experiment, metal contents in treated wastewaters decreased from 6.65 to 97.56% for water hyacinth and 3.51 to 93.51% for water lettuce tanks. Toxicity tests showed that the mortality of fish exposed increased with increase in concentration of pollutants in wastewaters and the time of exposure. Therefore, the highest value of LC50 was recorded for fish subjected to 3 hours of exposure (16.37%). The lowest rate was obtained after an exposure of 20 to 24 hours (5.85%). After phytoremediation, the effluents purified by Eichhornia crassipes can maintain the fish life beyond 24 hours of exposure. 相似文献

The use of natural chelates to enhance risk element mobility combined with rhizofiltration by free floating macrophytes have not been thoroughly studied in recent years. The aim of this study was to investigate the efficiency of organic acids in soil by conducting flushing experiments to enhance the mobility of Cd, Pb, and Zn from soil to solution. In addition, the bioaccumulation of Cd, Pb, and Zn, in water lettuce (Pistia stratiotes L.) will be studied as they affect the biomass in the rhizofiltration process. The results revealed that citric and tartaric acids mobilised the highest amount of all risk elements. In comparison to control, citric acid mobilised 71%, 181%, and 112% of Cd, Pb, and Zn while tartaric acid mobilised 70%, 155%, and 135% of Cd, Pb, and Zn respectively. The bioconcentration factor was approximately 2-5 times higher for juvenile plants than mature plants for all treatments as well as for both parts (leaves and roots). The risk element translocation into aerial parts decreased with increased time. Juvenile and mature plants proved a high accumulation potential and a 3 week growth period was observed as a sufficient time period to remove more than 80% of Cd, Pb, and Zn. 相似文献

本文利用从含酚废水中筛选出新的高效降酚菌株(Enterobacter sp.nov.)和凤眼莲根分泌物来探讨风眼莲与细菌之间松散的、非特异性的降酚机理。研究了风眼莲分泌物及其不同的组分对Enterobacter sp.nov.生长、降酚酶活性和降酚效率的影响。结果表明,低浓度的根分泌物(≤1%V/V)促进细菌生长,提高降酚效率,而高浓度的根分泌物(≥10%V/V)虽能促进细菌生长,但会抑制细菌降酚酶的诱导,降低降酚效率。凤眼莲根分泌物各组分中还原糖是影响Enterobacter sp.nov.降酚的关键因子。提出了人工组建凤眼莲和Enterobacter sp.nov.系统,提高降酚效率的可能性。 相似文献

The root powder of long-root Eichhornia crassipes, as a new kind of biodegradable adsorbent, has been tested for aqueous adsorption of Pb, Zn, Cu, and Cd. From FT-IR, we found that the absorption peaks of phosphorous compounds, carbonyl, and nitrogenous compounds displayed obvious changes before and after adsorption which illustrated that plant characteristics may play a role in binding with metals. Surface properties and morphology of the root powders have been characterized by means of SEM and BET. Energy spectrum analysis showed that the metals were adsorbed on root powders after adsorption. Then, optimum quantity of powder, pH values, and metal ion concentrations in single-system and multi-system were detected to discuss the characteristics and mechanisms of metal adsorption. Freundlich model and the second-order kinetics equation could well describe the adsorption of heavy metals in single-metal system. The adsorption of Pb, Zn, and Cd in the multi-metal system decreased with the concentration increased. At last, competitive adsorption of every two metals on root powder proved that Cu and Pb had suppressed the adsorption performance of Cd and Zn. 相似文献

Abstract: Ca oxalate crystal formation was examined in Pistia stratiotes L. leaves during excess Ca and Ca-deficient conditions. Pistia produces druse crystal idioblasts in the adaxial mesophyll and raphide idioblasts in the abaxial aerenchyma. Raphide crystals were previously found to grow bidirectionally, and here we show that Ca is incorporated along the entire surfaces of developing druse crystals, which are coated with membrane-bound microprojections. Leaves formed on plants grown on 0 Ca medium have fewer and smaller druse crystals than leaves formed under 5 mM Ca ("control") conditions, while raphide crystal formation is completely inhibited. When plants were moved from 0 to 15 mM ("high") Ca, the size and number of crystals in new leaves returned to (druse) or exceeded (raphide) control levels. High Ca also induced formation of druse, but not raphide, crystals in differentiating chlorenchyma cells. When plants were transferred from 15 mM Ca to 0 Ca, young druse crystals were preferentially partially dissolved. Oxalate oxidase, an enzyme that degrades oxalate, increased during Ca deficiency and was localized to the crystal surfaces. The more dynamic nature of druse crystals is not due to hydration form as both crystal types are shown to be monohydrate. Part of the difference may be because raphide idioblasts have developmental constraints that interfere with a more flexible response to changing Ca. These studies demonstrate that excess Ca can be stored as Ca oxalate, the Ca can be remobilized under certain conditions, and different forms of Ca oxalate have different roles in bulk Ca regulation. 相似文献

In this study, among a collection of heavy metals resistant endophytic bacterial strains isolated from aquatic hyperaccumulator plant (Eichhornia crassipes), one plant growth promoting endophytic bacteria (PGPE), SVUB4 was selected for its ability to utilize 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid (ACC) as the sole N source and accumulate different heavy metals. The SVUB4 strain was characterized as Enterobacter sp. on the basis of its 16S rDNA sequences. Assessment of the parameters of plant growth promotion revealed the intrinsic ability of the strain for the production of IAA, siderophore and solubilization of insoluble phosphate. Furthermore, plasmid DNA analysis of Enterobacter sp. strain SVUB4 indicated the presence of a single large plasmid element. The results of plasmid curing experiments demonstrated that the ability of this strain to grow in presence of Cd and Zn was encoded by the 98 kb plasmid, whereas the ability to grow in the presence of Pb appeared to be encoded by the chromosome. The Cd and Zn removal capacity of the respective metal sensitive strain (plasmidless) were about 36 and 45 μg/g-1 DW, respectively, while the removal capacity of the both metal by metal resistant strain (p SVUB4) showed a significantly higher Cd and Zn removal capacity of 153 and 228 μg/g?1 DW, respectively. However, both strains exhibited a similar pattern of Pb accumulation. The present observation also showed that for wild-type strain SVUB4 (pSVUB4), the overall level of IAA production in the absence and in the presence of Cd2+ or Zn2+was approximately the same. Nevertheless, strain SVUB4M in this respect appeared to be more sensitive to heavy metals: a noticeable decrease in IAA production was observed under the effect of both metals, especially with Cd2+. 相似文献

This study was conducted to assess the pollutant uptake capability of water lettuce (Pistia stratiotes L.) in terms of bioaccumulation, enrichment, and translocation of heavy metals grown in sugar mill effluent. Results showed that the maximum fresh weight (328.48 ± 2.04 gm kg?1), total chlorophyll content (2.13 ± 2.03 mg g?1 fwt), and relative growth rate, RGR (11.89 gg?1 d?1) of P. stratiotes were observed at 75% concentration of the sugar mill effluent after 60 days of phytoremediation experiment. The bioaccumulation factor (BF) of different heavy metals was greater than 1 with 50% and 75% concentrations of sugar mill effluent and this indicated that P. stratiotes was hyperaccumulator or phytoremediator of these metals. The enrichment factor (EF < 2 for Cu, Fe, Cr, Pb, Zn, and Mn) and (EF > 2 for Cd) indicated that P. stratiotes mineral enrichment deficient and it moderately enriched the different heavy metals. Moreover, translocation factor (TF) was less than 1 which indicated the low mobility of metals in different parts (root and leaves) of P. stratiotes after phytoremediation. Therefore, P. stratiotes can be used for phytotreatment of sugar mill effluent up to 50% to 75% concentrations and considered as hyperaccumulator aquatic plant for different heavy metals and other pollutants from the contaminated effluents. 相似文献

AbstractImpact of root Cd concentration on production of cysteine, non-protein thiols (NP-SH), glutathione (GSH), reduced glutathione (GSSG), and phytochelatins (PCs) in Eichhornia crassipes exposed to different dilutions of brass and electroplating industry effluent (25%, 50%, and 75%), and synthetic metal solutions of Cd alone (1, 2.5, and 3.5?ppm) and with Cr (1?ppm Cd + 1?ppm Cr, 2.5?ppm Cd + 3?ppm Cr, and 3.5?ppm Cd + 4?ppm Cr) was assessed in a 45?days study. Different treatments were used to understand and compare differential antioxidant defense response of plant under practical drainage (effluent) and experimental synthetic solutions. The production of NP-SH and cysteine was maximum under 2.5?ppm Cd + 3?ppm Cr treatments i.e., 1.78?µmol/g fw and 288?nmol/g fw, respectively. The content of GSH declined whereas that of GSSG increased progressively with exposure duration in all treatments. HPLC chromatograms revealed that the concentrations of PC2, PC3, and PC4 (248, 250, and 288?nmol-SH equiv.g?1 fw, respectively) were maximum under 1?ppm Cd, 1?ppm Cd + 1?ppm Cr, and 2.5?ppm Cd + 3?ppm Cr treatments, respectively. PC2, PC3, and PC4 concentrations increased with Cd accumulation in the range 812–1354?µg/g dry wt, 1354–2032?µg/g dry wt and 2032–3200?µg/g dry wt, respectively. Thus, the study establishes a direct proportionality relationship between concentration/length of phytochelatins and root Cd concentrations, upto threshold limits, in E. crassipes. 相似文献

The aim of this study is to characterize the heavy metal phytoremediation potential of Miscanthus sp. Goedae-Uksae 1, a hybrid, perennial, bio-energy crop developed in South Korea. Six different metals (As, Cu, Pb, Ni, Cd, and Zn) were used for the study. The hybrid grass effectively absorbed all the metals from contaminated soil. The maximum removal was observed for As (97.7%), and minimum removal was observed for Zn (42.9%). Similarly, Goedae-Uksae 1 absorbed all the metals from contaminated water except As. Cd, Pb, and Zn were completely (100%) removed from contaminated water samples. Generally, the concentration of metals in roots was several folds higher than in shoots. Initial concentration of metals highly influenced the phytoremediation rate. The results of the bioconcentration factor, translocation factor, and enrichment coefficient tests indicate that Goedae-Uksae 1 could be used for phytoremediation in a marginally contaminated ecosystem. 相似文献

We determined the influence of larval host quality of the floating aquatic weed Pistia stratiotes L. (Araceae) on the fecundity and egg distribution of the biological control agent Spodoptera pectinicornis (Hampson) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae). Different nutritional levels were produced by growing plants with relatively low and high levels of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium fertilizer. Female and male pupal biomass were significantly greater when the larvae were fed leaves from the high fertilizer plants. Although the fertilizer treatments did not significantly influence total fecundity, there was an indirect effect as adults from larger pupae were more fecund. Regardless of treatment, ovipositing females formed a depression in the leaf surface by removing trichomes into which they deposited the egg masses. Most of the egg masses were laid on the lower leaf surface, on leaf positions 5–8 (counting from the young inner to the outer leaves) and during days 1–2 post-eclosion. Most of the eggs were laid in masses but about 12% were solitary. Females fed the low fertilizer treatment laid a greater proportion (mean ± s.e.) of their eggs as solitary eggs (17.3 ± 3.4% of total eggs) than did females fed the high fertilizer treatment (8.3 ± 2.3% of total eggs). The increased percentage of solitary eggs laid by the females from the low quality larval diet may be an adaptive response to decrease competition among the progeny. 相似文献
