Spinach (Spinacia oleracea L.) is considered a nitrogen (N) intensive plant with high nitrate (NO3?) accumulation in its leaves. The current study via a two-year field trial introduced an approach by combining N fertilization from different sources (e.g., ammonium nitrate; 33.5 % N, and urea; 48 % N) at different rates (180, and 360 kg N ha?1) with the foliar spraying of molybdenum (Mo) as sodium molybdate, and/or manganese (Mn) as manganese sulphate at rates of 50 and 100 mgL?1 of each or with a mixture of Mo and Mn at rates of 50 and 50 mg L?1, respectively on growth, chemical constituents, and NO3? accumulation in spinach leaves. Our findings revealed that the highest rate of N fertilization (360 kg N ha?1) significantly increased most of the measured parameters e.g., plant length, fresh and dry weight plant?1, number of leaves plant?1, leaf area plant?1, leaf pigments (chlorophyll a, b and carotenoids), nutrients (N, P, K, Fe, Mn, Zn), total soluble carbohydrates, protein content, net assimilation rate, and NO3? accumulation, but decreased leaf area ratio and relative growth rate. Moreover, plants received urea-N fertilizer gave the highest values of all previous attributes when compared with ammonium nitrate –N fertilizers, and the lowest values of NO3? accumulation. The co-fertilization of N-Mo-Mn gave the highest values in all studied attributes and the lowest NO3? accumulation. The best treatment was recorded under the treatment of 360 kg N-urea ha?1 in parallel with the combined foliar application of Mo and Mn (50 + 50 mg L?1). Our findings proposed that the co-fertilization of N-Mo-Mn could enhance spinach yield and its quality, while reducing NO3? accumulation in leaves, resulting agronomical, environmental and economic benefits.  相似文献

Surface and subsurface litter fulfil many functions in the biogeochemical cycling of C and N in terrestrial ecosystems. These were explored using a microcosm study by monitoring dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) (NH4 +–N?+?NO3 ?–N), dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentrations and fluxes in drainage water under ambient outdoor temperatures. Subsurface litter remarkably reduced the DIN concentrations in winter, probably by microbial N uptake associated with higher C:N ratio of added litter compared with soil at 10–25?cm depth. Fluxes of DIN were generally dominated by NO3 ?–N; but NH4 +–N strongly dominated DIN fluxes during freeze–thaw events. Appreciable concentrations of NH4 +–N were observed in the drainage from the acid grassland soils throughout the experiment, indicating NH4 +–N mobility and export in drainage water especially during freeze–thaw. Litter contributed substantially to DOC and DON production and they were correlated positively (p?<?0.01) for all treatments. DOC and DON concentrations correlated with temperature for the control (p?<?0.01) and surface litter (p?<?0.001) treatments and they were higher in late summer. The subsurface litter treatment, however, moderated the effect of temperature on DOC and DON dynamics. Cumulative N species fluxes confirmed the dominance of litter as the source of DON and DOC in the drainage water. DON constituted 42, 46 and 62% of cumulative TDN flux for control, surface litter and subsurface litter treatments respectively.  相似文献

Uptake and assimilation of nitrogen and phosphorus were studied in Olisthodiscus luteus Carter. A diel periodicity in nitrate reductase activity was observed in log and stationary phase cultures; there was a 10-fold difference in magnitude between maximum and minimum rates, but other cellular features such as chlorophyll a, carbon, nitrogen, C:N ratio (atoms) · cell?1 were less variable. Ks values (~2 μM) for uptake of nitrate-N and ammonium-N were observed. Phosphorus assimilated · cell?1· day?1 varied with declining external phosphorus concentrations; growth rates <0.5 divisions · day?1 were common at <0.5 μM PO4-P. Phosphate uptake rates (Ks= 1.0–1.98 μM) varied with culture age and showed multiphasic kinetic features. Alkaline phosphatase activity was not detected. Comparisons of the nutrient dynamics of O. luteus to other phytoplankton species and the ecological implications as related to the phytoplankton community of Narragansett Bay (Rhode Island) are discussed.  相似文献

A novel bacterium, strain SZ28, identified as Acinetobacter sp., showed anaerobic denitrification ability using Mn(II) as the electron donor. Nitrate-nitrogen concentration decreased from nearly 16.52–mg L?1 to 4.4–mg L?1, without accumulation of nitrite as an intermediate, with a maximum of 0.063–mg NO3?-N L?1 h?1, reaching a peak of 0.085–mg NO3?-N L?1 h?1 in sodium acetate. The nitrate removal rate reached 0.067–mg NO3?-N L?1 h?1, 0.059–mg NO3?-N L?1 h?1, and 0.078 mg NO3?-N L?1 h?1 using Mn(II), S(II), and Fe(II) as electron donors, respectively. The optimum pH was 6.0, with a removal rate of 0.063–mg NO3?-N L?1 h?1  相似文献

Seed of flax (Linum usitatissimum L.) grown on calcareous and neutral soils sometimes accumulates relatively high concentrations of Cd. The influence of a post-flowering application of NH4NO3 (115 mg N kg-1), CdSO4 (1 mg Cd kg-1), FeEDDHA (2 mg Fe kg-1), NaH2PO4 (120 mg P kg-1) and ZnSO4 (8 mg Zn kg-1) on seed accumulation of Cd, Fe, N, Mn, P and Zn by flax grown on a Calciaquoll was studied in two experiments under greenhouse conditions. Seed yields were increased by the N and Zn treatments, and the N×Zn interaction was positive. Zinc deficiency delayed flowering and boll formation by up to 20 days and reduced seed size. In the absence of added Cd, seed accumulated up to 0.33 mg Cd kg-1. This Cd accumulation was reduced by approximately 50 and 17% by added Zn and Fe, respectively, but was little affected by P fertilizer and post-flowering N stress. In the presence of added Cd, seed Cd exceeded 3.3 mg Cd kg-1, and the antagonistic effects of Fe and Zn on seed Cd were absent. Seed N, P, Fe and Zn concentrations were increased on average by 10, 45, 31 and 97% by the N, P, Fe and Zn fertilizer treatments, respectively. FeEDDHA reduced seed Mn concentration by approximately 58%. However, seed Mn concentration was much less than that found in vegetative tissue at flowering. Soil-applied Zn may reduce seed Cd concentration in flax under field conditions, and may increase marketability of flax for food use.  相似文献

Productivity in boreal ecosystems is primarily limited by available soil nitrogen (N), and there is substantial interest in understanding whether deposition of anthropogenically derived reactive nitrogen (Nr) results in greater N availability to woody vegetation, which could result in greater carbon (C) sequestration. One factor that may limit the acquisition of Nr by woody plants is the presence of bryophytes, which are a significant C and N pool, and a location where associative cyanobacterial N‐fixation occurs. Using a replicated stand‐scale N‐addition experiment (five levels: 0, 3, 6, 12, and 50 kg N ha?1 yr?1; n=6) in the boreal zone of northern Sweden, we tested the hypothesis that sequestration of Nr into bryophyte tissues, and downregulation of N‐fixation would attenuate Nr inputs, and thereby limit anthropogenic Nr acquisition by woody plants. Our data showed that N‐fixation per unit moss mass and per unit area sharply decreased with increasing N addition. Additionally, the tissue N concentrations of Pleuorzium schreberi increased and its biomass decreased with increasing N addition. This response to increasing N addition caused the P. schreberi N pool to be stable at all but the highest N addition rate, where it significantly decreased. The combined effects of changed N‐fixation and P. schreberi biomass N accounted for 56.7% of cumulative Nr additions at the lowest Nr addition rate, but only a minor fraction for all other treatments. This ‘bryophyte effect’ can in part explain why soil inorganic N availability and acquisition by woody plants (indicated by their δ15N signatures) remained unchanged up to N addition rates of 12 kg ha?1 yr?1 or greater. Finally, we demonstrate that approximately 71.8% of the boreal forest experiences Nr deposition rates at or below 3 kg ha?1 yr?1, suggesting that bryophytes likely limit woody plant acquisition of ambient anthropogenic Nr inputs throughout a majority of the boreal forest.  相似文献

The green-tide macroalga, Ulva prolifera, was tested in the laboratory to determine its nutrient uptake and photosynthesis under different conditions. In the nutrient concentration experiments U. prolifera showed a saturated uptake for nitrate but an escalating uptake in the tested range for phosphorus. Both N/P and NO3 ?/NH4 + ratios influenced nutrient uptake significantly (p?<?0.05) while the PSII quantum yield [Y(II)] (p?>?0.05) remained unaffected. The maximum N uptake rate (33.9?±?0.8 μmol g?1 DW h?1) and P uptake rate (11.1?±?4.7) was detected at N/P ratios of 7.5 and 2.2, respectively. U. prolifera preferred NH4 +-N to NO3 ?-N when the NO3 ?-N/NH4 +-N ratio was less than 2.2 (p?<?0.05). But between ratios of 2.2 and 12.9, the uptake of NO3 ?-N surpassed that of NH4 +-N. In the temperature experiments, the highest N uptake rate and [Y(II)] were observed at 20 °C, while the lowest rates were detected at 5 °C. P uptake rates were correlated with increasing temperature.  相似文献

Phosphorus deficiency is a very common problem in the acid soil of central China. Previous research has shown that starter N and N topdressing at the flowering stage (Rl) increased soybean (Glycine max) yield and N2 fixation (Gan et al, 1997, 2000). However, there is little information available concerning soybean response to P‐fertiliser in soybean production in central China (Gan, 1999). A field experiment was conducted to investigate the response to P (0 kg P ha?1, 22 kg P ha?1, 44 kg P ha?1 before sowing) and N fertiliser application (N1: 0 kg N ha?1, N2: 25 kg N ha?1 before sowing, N3: N2 + 50 kg N ha?1 at the V2 stage and N4: N2 + 50 kg N ha?1 at the R1 stage) on growth, yield and N2 fixation of soybean. Both N and P fertiliser increased growth and seed yield of soybean (P < 0.01). Application of basal P fertiliser at 22 kg P ha?1 or 44 kg P ha?1 increased total N accumulation by 11% and 10% (P < 0.01) and seed yield by 12% and 13% (P < 0.01), respectively, compared to the zero P treatment. Although application of starter N at 25 kg N ha?1 had no positive effect on seed yield at any P level (P > 0.05), an application of a topdressing of 50 kg N ha?1 at the V2 or R1 stage increased total N accumulation by 11% and 14% (P < 0.01) and seed yield by 16% and 21% (P < 0.01), respectively, compared to the zero N treatment. Soybean plants were grown on sterilised Perlite in the greenhouse experiment to study the physiological response to different concentrations of phosphate (P1: 0 mM; P2: 0.05 mM; P3: 0.5 mM; P4:1.0 mN) and nitrate (N1: 0 mM with inoculation, N2: 20 mM with inoculation). The result confirmed that N and P nutrients both had positive effects on growth, nodulation and yield (P < 0.01). The relative importance of growth parameters that contributed to the larger biomass with N and P fertilisation was in decreasing order: (i) total leaf area, (ii) individual leaf area, (iii) shoot/root ratio, (iv) leaf area ratio and (v) specific leaf area. The yield increase at N and P supply was mainly associated with more seeds and a larger pod number per plant, which confirmed the result from the field experiment.  相似文献

Nitrogen (N) fixation in moss‐associated cyanobacteria is one of the main sources of available N for N‐limited ecosystems such as subarctic tundra. Yet, N2 fixation in mosses is strongly influenced by soil moisture and temperature. Thus, temporal scaling up of low‐frequency in situ measurements to several weeks, months or even the entire growing season without taking into account changes in abiotic conditions cannot capture the variation in moss‐associated N2 fixation. We therefore aimed to estimate moss‐associated N2 fixation throughout the snow‐free period in subarctic tundra in field experiments simulating climate change: willow (Salix myrsinifolia) and birch (Betula pubescens spp. tortuosa) litter addition, and warming. To achieve this, we established relationships between measured in situ N2 fixation rates and soil moisture and soil temperature and used high‐resolution measurements of soil moisture and soil temperature (hourly from May to October) to model N2 fixation. The modelled N2 fixation rates were highest in the warmed (2.8 ± 0.3 kg N ha?1) and birch litter addition plots (2.8 ± 0.2 kg N ha?1), and lowest in the plots receiving willow litter (1.6 ± 0.2 kg N ha?1). The control plots had intermediate rates (2.2 ± 0.2 kg N ha?1). Further, N2 fixation was highest during the summer in the warmed plots, but was lowest in the litter addition plots during the same period. The temperature and moisture dependence of N2 fixation was different between the climate change treatments, indicating a shift in the N2 fixer community. Our findings, using a combined empirical and modelling approach, suggest that a longer snow‐free period and increased temperatures in a future climate will likely lead to higher N2 fixation rates in mosses. Yet, the consequences of increased litter fall on moss‐associated N2 fixation due to shrub expansion in the Arctic will depend on the shrub species’ litter traits.  相似文献

The effects of flowing water on net photosynthesis, dark respiration, specific growth rate, and optimum N:P ratios by Spirogyra fluviatilis Hilse were assessed. The alga was cultivated under nitrogen or phosphorus limitation in laboratory streams at three flow velocities: 3, 12, and 30 cm·s?1. The Droop equation adequately described respiration and photosynthesis (PSnet) as a function of N or P cell quota (QN or Qp). The data show that for N- or P-limited Spirogyra fluviatilis, flowing water is physiologically costly. Generally, flowing water had little effect on respiration rates; however, the proportion of gross photosynthesis devoted to dark respiration did increase with flow velocity. For photosynthesis, the minimum N and P cell quotas increased with velocity, and the theoretical PSnet maxima for N and P both appeared greatest at 12 cm·s?1. The Droop models showed that for any given QN or Qp, PSnet, was reduced by the 30-cm·s?1 treatment. Consistent with this finding, independent estimates of specific growth rates for P-limited S. fluviatilis in the laboratory streams were inversely related to flow velocity when ambient PO4?3 was undetectable. However, growth was not diminished at the fastest velocity when PO4?3 was available for uptake. Thus, the increase in cellular phosphorus demand can be offset by flow-enhanced P uptake when conditions permit; otherwise, growth will be impaired. The optimum N:P ratios for S. fluviatilis at 3, 12, and 30 cm·s?1 were 50, 58, and 52 by atoms, respectively, when calculated for PSnet= 0. The optimum ratios were inversely related to PSnet and decreased to approximately 20 when PSnet was near maximum. The potential for flowing water to mediate nutrient partitioning among lotic algae by altering growth rates and optimum nutrient ratios is discussed.  相似文献

High salinity wastewaters have limited treatment options due to the occurrence of salt inhibition in conventional biological treatments. Using recirculating marine aquaculture effluents as a case study, this work explored the use of Constructed Wetlands as a treatment option for nutrient and salt loads reduction. Three different substrates were tested for nutrient adsorption, of which expanded clay performed better. This substrate adsorbed 0.31 mg kg?1 of NH4 +?N and 5.60 mg kg?1 of PO4 3??P and 6.9 mg kg?1 dissolved salts after 7 days of contact. Microcosms with Typha latifolia planted in expanded clay and irrigated with aquaculture wastewater (salinity 2.4%, 7 days hydraulic retention time, for 4 weeks), were able to remove 94% NH4 +?N (inlet 0.25 ± 0.13 mg L?1), 78% NO2 ??N (inlet 0.78 ± 0.62 mg L?1), 46% NO3 ??N (inlet 18.83 ± 8.93 mg L?1) whereas PO4 3??P was not detected (inlet 1.41 ± 0.21 mg L?1). Maximum salinity reductions of 52% were observed. Despite some growth inhibition, plants remained viable, with 94% survival rate. Daily treatment dynamics studies revealed rapid PO4 3??P adsorption, unbalancing the N:P ratio and possibly affecting plant development. An integrated treatment approach, coupled with biomass valorization, is suggested to provide optimal resource management possibilities.  相似文献

It is important to understand switchgrass (Panicum virgatum L.) productivity with relation to diverse nutrient deficiency conditions in order to optimize continuous biomass production in marginal lands. This study was conducted on a wasteland sandy soil (Aridosol) to assess biomass yield, nutrient uptake and nitrogen (N) recovery of switchgrass, and soil nitrate-N (NO3?-N) accumulation responses to N (120 kg N ha?1), phosphorus (P, 100 kg P2O5 ha?1), and potassium (K, 45 kg K2O ha?1) applications during 2015 and 2016 in Inner Mongolia, China. The experiment layout was a randomized complete block design with fertilizer mixture treatments of N, P, and K (NPK), P and K (PK), N and K (NK), N and P (NP), and a control with no fertilizer input (CK). Plant height and stem diameter remained unaffected by the different fertilizer treatments. Biomass yield with the NPK treatment in 2015 was 8.9 Mg ha?1 and in 2016 it was 7.3 Mg ha?1. In 2015, compared with the NPK treatment, a significant yield reduction of 33.7% was found with PK, 22.5% with NK, 28.1% with NP, and 40.5% with CK; however, in 2016, yield declined significantly only with CK compared to the rest of the fertilizer treatments, for which yields were statistically similar. Plant N content was reduced for the treatment PK (i.e. N omission); conversely, plant P and K content remained unaffected with P and K omission treatments. Plant nutrient uptake, particularly of N and K, was severely decreased by the nutrient omission treatments when averaged across 2 years. Apparent N recovery (ANR; quantity of N uptake per unit of N applied) was reduced for the NP and NK treatments, which led to an increase in soil NO3?-N accumulation in the top 0–20 cm layer, compared with the NPK treatment. However, ANR was the highest (37.2% in 2015) with the NPK treatment, which also reduced soil NO3?-N accumulation. A balanced N, P, and K fertilizer management approach is suggested to sustain switchgrass yield and stand persistence on semiarid, marginal, sandy wasteland.  相似文献

Nitrogen (N) addition has been well documented to decrease plant biodiversity across various terrestrial ecosystems. However, such generalizations about the impacts of N addition on soil microbial communities are lacking. This study was conducted to examine the impacts of N addition (urea-N fertilizer) on soil microbial communities in a semi-arid temperate steppe in northern China. Soil microbial biomass carbon (C), biomass N (MBN), net N mineralization and nitrification, and bacterial and fungal community level physiological profiles (CLPP) along an N addition gradient (0–64 g N m?2 year?1) were measured. Three years of N addition caused gradual or step increases in soil NH4-N, NO3-N, net N mineralization and nitrification in the early growing season. The reductions in microbial biomass under high N addition levels (32 and 64 g N m?2 year?1) are partly attributed to the deleterious effects of soil pH. An N optimum between 16 and 32 g N m?2 year?1 in microbial biomass and functional diversity exists in the temperate steppe in northern China. Similar N loading thresholds may also occur in other ecosystems, which help to interpret the contrasting observations of microbial responses to N addition.  相似文献

Seasonal changes in nitrate and ammonium concentrations were studied inCynodon dactylon (L.) Pers. plants grown for one year in the field in a Mediterranean area. Plants cultivated in a sandy loam soil were fertilized with nitrate-N or ammonium-N at two application rates (250 and 1000 kg N ha−1 year−1) and compared to controls with no added N. Plots were harvested every three weeks from May to November. Shoots were separated into leaves and stems and analyses carried out in both fractions. Nitrogen applications generally led to elevated nitrate concentrations both in leaves and stems at all sampling dates but had little influence on the ammonium concentrations of the tissues. Higher nitrate and ammonium concentrations were found in stems than in leaves, although no levels higher than 0.22% NO 3 −N and 0.10% NH 4 + −N were detected in either fraction. Nitrate tended to accumulate mostly in autumn and spring whereas low accumulations were found in summer. Ammonium showed both in leaves and stems a progressive but limited accumulation throughout the period with a peak in October, followed by a strong decrease in November.  相似文献

1. The release of total phosphorus (TP) and nitrogen (N in ammonium) was measured for the five most abundant fish species (>85% of biomass) in Mouse and Ranger Lakes, two biomanipulated, oligotrophic lakes in Ontario. 2. The specific release rate of both nutrients was significantly related to fish mass; log10 TP release rate (μg h?1) = 0.793 (±0.109) [log10 wet mass (g)] + 0.7817 (±0.145), and log10 N release rate (μg h?1) = 0.6946 (±0.079) [log10wet mass (g)] + 1.7481 (±0.108). 3. When fish nutrient release was standardized for abundance (all populations, 1993–95) and epilimnetic volume, fish were estimated to contribute 0.083 (±0.061) μg TP L?1 day?1, and 0.41 (±0.17) μg N L?1 day?1 in Mouse L., and 0.062 (±0.020) μg TP L?1 day?1 and 0.31 (±0.08) μg N L?1 day?1 in Ranger L. 4. In comparison, concurrent rates of total planktonic P regeneration were 1.02 (±0.45) μg L?1 day?1 (Mouse L.) and 0.85 (±0.19) μg L?1 day?1 (Ranger L.). Fish represented 8% of planktonic P release in Mouse L. and 7% in Ranger L. 5. Fish dry mass had mean elemental body compositions of 39.3% carbon, 10.9% nitrogen, and 4.0% phosphorus (all fish combined), with a mean molar C : N : P ratio of 27 : 6 : 1. This comprised about 55% and 23% of the total epilimnetic particulate P and N respectively. 6. Turnover times of P and N in fish were approximately 103 and 48 days respectively. In comparison, planktonic turnover times of particulate P in Mouse and Ranger Lakes were 4.3 and 4.4 days respectively. Given their high P content and low turnover rates, fish appear to be important P sinks in lakes.  相似文献

Four benthic filamentous Chlorophycean species (three Stigeoclonium species and one Oedogonium species) were obtained from two ditches, influenced, respectively, by the point discharges of pig farm and sewage treatment plant effluents. The ditches showed a gradual change in water chemistry, particularly with regard to ammonium-N and phosphate-P. The growth of the algae was studied in artificial ammonium-N (concentration range of 1–100 mg l?1) and phosphate-P gradients (concentration range of 0.1–15 mg l?1), which were based on concentrations of these nutrients in the ditches. Maximum growth in ammonium-N was attained for S. aestivale Hazen Z1 and S helveticum Vischer P4 at 50 mg l?1, for S. aestivale Z4 and Oedogonium sp. Z4 at 10 mg l?1, and for S. amoenum Kützing P2 at 5 mg l?1. Maximum growth in phosphate-P was attained for S. helveticum P4 at 15 mg l?1, for S. aestivale Z1 and S. amoenum P2 at 1.5 mg l?1, and for S. aestivale Z4 and Oedogonium sp. Z4 at 1 mg l?1.It is concluded that the ammonium-N and phosphate-P levels of ditches determined the distribution of the algae along the ditches, and therefore influenced the species composition of the periphyton communities. The study revealed a population differentiation with regard to ammonium-N in two closely adjacent populations of S. aestivale.  相似文献

1. Excretion of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) is a direct and potentially important role for aquatic consumers in nutrient cycling that has recently garnered increased attention. The ecosystem‐level significance of excreted nutrients depends on a suite of abiotic and biotic factors, however, and few studies have coupled measurements of excretion with consideration of its likely importance for whole‐system nutrient fluxes. 2. We measured rates and ratios of N and P excretion by shrimps (Xiphocaris elongata and Atya spp.) in two tropical streams that differed strongly in shrimp biomass because a waterfall excluded predatory fish from one site. We also made measurements of shrimp and basal resource carbon (C), N and P content and estimated shrimp densities and ecosystem‐level N and P excretion and uptake. Finally, we used a 3‐year record of discharge and NH4‐N concentration in the high‐biomass stream to estimate temporal variation in the distance required for excretion to turn over the ambient NH4‐N pool. 3. Per cent C, N, and P body content of Xiphocaris was significantly higher than that of Atya. Only per cent P body content showed significant negative relationships with body mass. C:N of Atya increased significantly with body mass and was higher than that of Xiphocaris. N : P of Xiphocaris was significantly higher than that of Atya. 4. Excretion rates ranged from 0.16–3.80 μmol NH4‐N shrimp?1 h?1, 0.23–5.76 μmol total dissolved nitrogen (TDN) shrimp?1 h?1 and 0.002–0.186 μmol total dissolved phosphorus (TDP) shrimp?1 h?1. Body size was generally a strong predictor of excretion rates in both taxa, differing between Xiphocaris and Atya for TDP but not NH4‐N and TDN. Excretion rates showed statistically significant but weak relationships with body content stoichiometry. 5. Large between‐stream differences in shrimp biomass drove differences in total excretion by the two shrimp communities (22.3 versus 0.20 μmol NH4‐N m?2 h?1, 37.5 versus 0.26 μmol TDN m?2 h?1 and 1.1 versus 0.015 μmol TDP m?2 h?1), equivalent to 21% and 0.5% of NH4‐N uptake and 5% and <0.1% of P uptake measured in the high‐ and low‐biomass stream, respectively. Distances required for excretion to turn over the ambient NH4‐N pool varied more than a hundredfold over the 3‐year record in the high‐shrimp stream, driven by variability in discharge and NH4‐N concentration. 6. Our results underscore the importance of both biotic and abiotic factors in controlling consumer excretion and its significance for nutrient cycling in aquatic ecosystems. Differences in community‐level excretion rates were related to spatial patterns in shrimp biomass dictated by geomorphology and the presence of predators. Abiotic factors also had important effects through temporal patterns in discharge and nutrient concentrations. Future excretion studies that focus on nutrient cycling should consider both biotic and abiotic factors in assessing the significance of consumer excretion in aquatic ecosystems.  相似文献

The effectr of phosphate starvation and subsequent uptake on distribution and concentration of phosphate metabolic intermediates and metals were studied in Heterosigma akashiwo (Hada) Hada by 31P-NMR spectroscopy, neutron activation analysis and ESR spectroscopy. Excess orthophosphate (4.5 μM Pi, as NaH2PO4) added to a medium with P-depleted H. akashiwo cells was rapidly taken up resulting in an increase in P cell quota (qp)from 68.2 to 99.6 fmol. cell-1in 2 h and to 156.3 fmol. cell-1in 6 h. After three days, qp approached about 190 fmol. cell?1. Polyphosphate (PPi) rapidly increased from 0 to 11.4 fmol· cell?1in 2 h and to 24.7 fmol·cell?1in 6 h. Diel variation of cell quota indicated that cellular Pi increase was synchronized with cellular PPi decrease and vice versa. The average chain length of PPi increased from ca. 0 to ca. 10.2 phosphate residues in 2 h after addition of Pi and one day later, from ca. 9.8 to ca. 12.5. The cell quota of Mn (qMn), and to a lesser extent Co, increased rapidly from 4.87 fg. cell?1in the P- starved condition to 50.48 fg·cell?12 h afer addition of Pi but decreased to 8.63 fg. Cell?1by 6 h. Concentrations of Zn, As, Hf, Cu and sometimes Al, Mg, K, and Ca changed in a manner opposite to that of Mn and Co. The excretion of these cations, which was synchronized with the uptake of Mn and Co, may be important for a charge balancing in the cells. The ESR spectra showed that the high cellular Mn observed at 2 h after P addition was Mn2+which was taken up by the cells rather than adsorbed on the cell surface. These data combined with PPi data suggested that the behavior of qMn is synchronized with the behavior of average chain length of PPi.  相似文献

Prorocentrum minimum is a neritic dinoflagellate that forms seasonal blooms and red tides in estuarine ecosystems. While known to be mixotrophic, previous attempts to document feeding on algal prey have yielded low grazing rates. In this study, growth and ingestion rates of P. minimum were measured as a function of nitrogen (‐N) and phosphorous (‐P) starvation. A P. minimum isolate from Chesapeake Bay was found to ingest cryptophyte prey when in stationary phase and when starved of N or P. Prorocentrum minimum ingested two strains of Teleaulax amphioxeia at higher rates than six other cryptophyte species. In all cases ‐P treatments resulted in the highest grazing. Ingestion rates of ‐P cells on T. amphioxeia saturated at ~5 prey per predator per day, while ingestion by ‐N cells saturated at 1 prey per predator per day. In the presence of prey, ‐P treated cells reached a maximum mixotrophic growth rate (μmax) of 0.5 d?1, while ‐N cells had a μmax of 0.18 d?1. Calculations of ingested C, N, and P due to feeding on T. amphioxeia revealed that phagotrophy can be an important source of all three elements. While P. minimum is a proficient phototroph, inducible phagotrophy is an important nutritional source for this dinoflagellate.  相似文献

Abstract

Due to the ability to easily accept and donate electrons Mn(III)N-alkylpyridylporphyrins (MnPs) can dismute O2 ·?, reduce peroxynitrite, but also generate reactive species and behave as pro-oxidants if conditions favour such action. Herein two ortho isomers, MnTE-2-PyP5+, MnTnHex-2-PyP5+, and a meta isomer MnTnHex-3-PyP5+, which differ greatly with regard to their metal-centered reduction potential, E1/2 (MnIIIP/MnIIP) and lipophilicity, were explored. Employing MnIIIP/MnIIP redox system for coupling with ascorbate, these MnPs catalyze ascorbate oxidation and thus peroxide production. Consequently, cancer oxidative burden may be enhanced, which in turn would suppress its growth. Cytotoxic effects on Caco-2, Hela, 4T1, HCT116 and SUM149 were studied. When combined with ascorbate, MnPs killed cancer cells via peroxide produced outside of the cell. MnTE-2-PyP5+ was the most efficacious catalyst for peroxide production, while MnTnHex-3-PyP5+ is most prone to oxidative degradation with H2 , and thus the least efficacious. A 4T1 breast cancer mouse study of limited scope and success was conducted. The tumour oxidative stress was enhanced and its microvessel density reduced when mice were treated either with ascorbate or MnP/ascorbate; the trend towards tumour growth suppression was detected.  相似文献
