ABSTRACT

Background: The páramo provides key ecosystem services, including regulation and provision of water. To understand the underlying functions, an ecosystem approach is necessary.

Aims: We quantified the combined effect of vegetation and soils (integrated topographic and vegetation units – TVU) on the hydrological balance of a Venezuelan páramo micro-watershed and analyse its hydrological response to intra- and interannual rainfall variability.

Methods: Data (2008–2016) from meteorological stations of TVUs and of a streamflow station was used to calculate watershed level hydrologic balances. We quantified the impact of the TVUs outputs by calculating evapotranspiration under non-standard conditions (ETc adj).

Result: Evapotranspiration of wetlands and tarns was high, exceeding annual precipitation. Shrubland had low evapotranspiration. Recharge of páramo reservoirs (soils, wetlands, tarns) occurred when monthly rainfall exceeded 90 mm. In dry years there were lower water yields with less effective hydrological regulation. In average years the differences between input and output in watershed balances were very small.

Conclusions: The high and constant evapotranspiration of the wetlands and tarns (due to permanent water availability) suggests they could maintain streamflow during dry periods. Their high evapotranspiration rates are compensated by low rates in shrublands units, reducing the mean total evapotranspiration of the watershed. The watershed balances suggest a limited regulatory capacity in these relatively dry páramos with no volcanic soils.  相似文献

These are exciting times for PVC researchers! The PVC superphylum is composed of the bacterial phyla Planctomycetes, Verrucomicrobia, Chlamydiae (those three founders giving it its name), Lentisphaerae and Kirimatiellaeota as well as some uncultured candidate phyla, such as the Candidatus Omnitrophica (previously known as OP3). Despite early debates, most of the disagreements that surround this group of bacteria have been recently resolved. In this article, we review the history of the study of PVC bacteria, with a particular focus on the misinterpretations that emerged early in the field and their resolution. We begin with a historical perspective that describes the relevant facts of PVC research from the early times when they were not yet termed PVC. Those were controversial times and we refer to them as the “discovery age” of the field. We continue by describing new discoveries due to novel techniques and data that combined with the reinterpretations of old ones have contributed to solve most of the discordances and we refer to these times as the “illumination age” of PVC research. We follow by arguing that we are just entering the “golden age” of PVC research and that the future of this growing community is looking bright. We finish by suggesting a few of the directions that PVC researches might take in the future.  相似文献

The post-war fishery of Lake Ladoga can be divided according to its catch level into four periods. In the years 1945–1954 the total annual catch increased, and reached the level of 4000 tonnes. In this period the fish stocks that had increased during the war years were intensively exploited. However, this fishery was not in balance with the stocks during the period 1955–1963. As a consequence, the catch decreased drastically, being sometimes less than 2000 tonnes.Controlling the fishery restored the abundance of whitefish Coregonus lavaretus (L.) and zander Stizostedion lucioperca (L.). This increased the total annual catch to about 5500 tonnes in 1964–1989. However, the fishery control measures have not been sufficient to achieve the conservation of salmon Salmo solar L. m. sebago, brown trout Salmo trutta L. and the migratory lake whitefish stocks.A decrease in the total fish catch has been observed since 1990. This decrease may be related to the deterioration of the environment of Lake Ladoga, caused by anthropogenic factors. The unfavourable state of the ecosystem has led to decline of the whitefish stocks and, especially during the last few years, to drastical decline of zander.Acute problems, to be faced in the near future, are connected with the hatchery maintenance of several river-spawning stocks, e.g. salmon, brown trout and migratory whitefish, because the existing fish hatcheries are insufficient in capacity and technically outdated.  相似文献

The study of plant mitochondria started in earnest around 1950 with the first isolations of mitochondria from animal and plant tissues. The first 35 years were spent establishing the basic properties of plant mitochondria and plant respiration using biochemical and physiological approaches. A number of unique properties (compared to mammalian mitochondria) were observed: (i) the ability to oxidize malate, glycine and cytosolic NAD(P)H at high rates; (ii) the partial insensitivity to rotenone, which turned out to be due to the presence of a second NADH dehydrogenase on the inner surface of the inner mitochondrial membrane in addition to the classical Complex I NADH dehydrogenase; and (iii) the partial insensitivity to cyanide, which turned out to be due to an alternative oxidase, which is also located on the inner surface of the inner mitochondrial membrane, in addition to the classical Complex IV, cytochrome oxidase. With the appearance of molecular biology methods around 1985, followed by genomics, further unique properties were discovered: (iv) plant mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) is 10–600 times larger than the mammalian mtDNA, yet it only contains approximately 50% more genes; (v) plant mtDNA has kept the standard genetic code, and it has a low divergence rate with respect to point mutations, but a high recombinatorial activity; (vi) mitochondrial mRNA maturation includes a uniquely complex set of activities for processing, splicing and editing (at hundreds of sites); (vii) recombination in mtDNA creates novel reading frames that can produce male sterility; and (viii) plant mitochondria have a large proteome with 2000–3000 different proteins containing many unique proteins such as 200–300 pentatricopeptide repeat proteins. We describe the present and fairly detailed picture of the structure and function of plant mitochondria and how the unique properties make their metabolism more flexible allowing them to be involved in many diverse processes in the plant cell, such as photosynthesis, photorespiration, CAM and C4 metabolism, heat production, temperature control, stress resistance mechanisms, programmed cell death and genomic evolution. However, it is still a challenge to understand how the regulation of metabolism and mtDNA expression works at the cellular level and how retrograde signaling from the mitochondria coordinates all those processes.  相似文献

A series of studies, recently reviewed, has established that approximately 60% of the structural genes which are expressed in the sporophytic portion of the angiosperm life cycle are also expressed and exposed to selection in the pollen. Given the haploidy and large population sizes of pollen grains, a substantial portion of the sporophytic genome could thus be periodically exposed to a bacterial type of mass screening. This extraordinary possibility is often subject to some skepticism which may, of course, be justified. However, recent attempts to apply models appear to be inappropriate in this context, in part because these attempts overlook an important source of genetic variation, and also because they assume fixed values for selection and fitness. More recently, studies of pollen/pollen interactions have suggested that what Linskens termed the ”programic phase” may represent an arena for important, and largely unexplored phenomena, some of which are discussed here. ABSTRACT

Background: Stomatal response functions of dominant plant species can provide insights into the behaviour of ecosystems under environmental stress, and provide tools for modelling their response to climate change. However, they remain little studied in tropical Alpine ecosystems.

Aims: Our objective was to formulate and compare stomatal response functions for two dominant páramo species with different adaptive strategies to drought, the stress-tolerant shrub Hypericum laricifolium, and the stress avoiding giant rosette Espeletia schultzii and thus enable making projections as to their future fitness in a changing climate.

Methods: A reanalysis of data found in the literature and new ecophysiological and micrometeorological measurements were used to fit and test new stomatal response functions to environmental variables for these two species.

Results: The response functions of vapour pressure differences between leaf and air showed an exponential decrease for both species, while for photosynthetically active radiation (PAR), peak-form response functions provided the best fit. The response function for leaf water potential was linear for the drought-tolerant shrub and decreased exponentially for the stress avoiding giant rosette. Several thresholds prior to stomatal closure were also included in the functions.

Conclusions: Although stress-avoiding and stress-tolerant strategies are both successful in the Andean páramo, the response functions suggest that the tolerant shrub could be more resistant to more intense drought.  相似文献

The discovery and development of the -lactam antibiotics are among the most powerful and successful achievements of modern science and technology. Since Fleming's accidental discovery of the penicillin-producing mold, seventy years of steady progress has followed, and today the -lactam group of compounds are the most successful example of natural product application and chemotherapy. Following on the heels of penicillin production by Penicillium chrysogenum came the discoveries of cephalosporin formation by Cephalosporium acremonium, cephamycin, clavam and carbapenem production by actinomycetes, and monocyclic -lactam production by actinomycetes and unicellular bacteria. Each one of these groups has yielded medically-useful products and has contributed to the reduction of pain and suffering of people throughout the world. Research on the microbiology, biochemistry, genetics and chemistry of these compounds have continued up to the present with major contributions being made by both individual and collaborative groups from industry and academia. The discovery of penicillin not only led to the era of the wonder drugs but provided the most important antibiotics available to medicine. Continued efforts have resulted in the improvement of these compounds with respect to potency, breadth of spectrum, activity against resistant pathogens, stability and pharmacokinetic properties. On the research front, major advances are being made on structural and regulatory biosynthetic genes and metabolic engineering of the pathways involved. New semisynthetic compounds especially those designed to combat resistance development are being examined in the clinic, and unusual non-antibiotic activities of these compounds are being pursued. Although seventy years of age, the -lactams are not yet ready for retirement.  相似文献

The prokaryotic tree of life: past, present... and future?   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
No accepted phylogenetic scheme for prokaryotes emerged until the late 1970s. Prior to that, it was assumed that there was a phylogenetic tree uniting all prokaryotes, but no suitable data were available for its construction. For 20 years, through the 1980s and 1990s, rRNA phylogenies were the gold standard. However, beginning in the last decade, findings from genomic data have challenged this new consensus. Gene trees can conflict greatly, and strains of the same species can differ enormously in genome content. Horizontal gene transfer is now known to be a significant influence on genome evolution. The next decade is likely to resolve whether or not we retain the centuries-old metaphor of the tree for all of life.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Background: Little information is available about life history of páramo plants such as phenology and plant-animal interactions.

Aims: We analysed phenological patterns of flowering and characterised the structure of a plant-pollinator network in a Venezuelan páramo in order to identify key species in this ecosystem.

Methods: We counted the number of individuals with flowers of 76 native plant species and recorded their pollinators in 16 permanent plots between 3000 and 4200 m monthly for three years. We used this dataset to develop a plant-pollinator network, on which nine different metrics related to structural properties were calculated.

Results: The flowering of most species concentrated during the rainy season (between May and November), however some species have continuous flowering. The guild of floral visitors included hummingbirds, flower piercers, bumblebees, Diptera and Lepidoptera. The plant – flower visitor interaction network did not exhibit nestedness, but showed a significant specialization index (H2) and high values of functional complementarity.

Conclusions: Páramo plants have the capacity of maintaining a resident nectarivorus fauna (bumblebees and hummingbirds) because of continuous flower offer during the year. However, the plant – pollinator network identified could be very sensitive to the loss component species, owing to high levels of specialisation and functional complementarity.  相似文献

The páramo is a high altitude tropical Andean ecosystem that contains peatlands with thick horizons of carbon (C) dense soils. Soil C data are sparse for most of the páramo, especially in peatlands, which limits our ability to provide accurate regional and country wide estimates of C storage. Therefore, the objective of our research was to quantify belowground C stocks and accumulation rates in páramo peatland soils in two regions of northeastern Ecuador. Peatland soil cores were collected from Antisana Ecological Reserve and Cayambe-Coca National Park. We measured soil C densities and 14C dates to estimate soil accumulation rates. The mean peatland soil depth across both regions was 3.8 m and contained an estimated mean C storage of 1282 Mg ha?1. Peatlands older than 3000 cal. year BP had a mean long-term C accumulation rate of 26 g m?2 year?1, with peatlands younger than 500 cal. year BP displaying mean recent rates of C accumulation of 134 g m?2 year?1. These peatlands also receive large inputs of mineral material, predominantly from volcanic deposition, that has created many interbedded non-peat mineral soil horizons that contained 48 % of the soil C. Because of large C stocks in Ecuadorian mountain peatlands and the potential disturbance from land use and climate change, additional studies are need to provide essential baseline assessments and estimates of C storage in the Andes.  相似文献

By means of ordination and classification techniques, the relationships between climate, soils, human activities and vegetation along an altitudinal gradient of the Venezuelan páramos are analyzed and interpreted. The altitudinal gradient chosen is characterized by decrease of temperature, precipitation, soil fertility, soil water-holding capacity, and plant cover as altitude increases. The ordination results suggest vegetation changes to be primarily related to environmental changes occurring with altitude, and secondly to disturbances caused mainly by grazing. Some results point toward a disjunction in the vegetational gradient occurring at ca. 3 500 m.a.s.l. and separating low and high páramo. This disjunction might have been caused by the glacial history of the páramos and the occurrence of frequent night-frosts.The soil samples were kindly analyzed by the Laboratorio de Edafologia, Centro Nacional de Investigaciones Agropecuarias. Help in plant identification was generously obtained from the specialists of Instituto Botánico, Instituto Nacional de Parques, Caracas.Nomenclature follows Vareschi (1970).Acknowledgements: This work was supported by the Decanato de Investigaciones, Universidad Simón Bolivar. National parks are an important tool for conserving biodiversity, particularly in areas of high biodiversity and endemism such as the tropical Andes. However, national parks often face a variety of stressors related to recreation, road construction and illegal extraction of natural resources. Unfortunately, the influence of these stressors for biodiversity is rarely well documented. Cajas National Park in Ecuador is no exception. Despite being traversed by the Cuenca-Molleturo-Naranjal road, effects of the road construction on biodiversity have not been determined. We therefore assessed the influence of road proximity on bird species richness and abundance as well as composition of bird habitat groups in Cajas National Park using transect walks at 25 m and 250 m distance to the road (overall 18 transects, each 1 km length). In total, we recorded 1110 individuals of 28 páramo bird species. Overall species richness did not differ between transects near and far from the road. Nevertheless, the average abundance of shrubby páramo species was significantly higher far from the road than near the road (Far = 36, Near = 25). Moreover, we found a tendency towards differences in the composition of bird habitat groups between transects near and far from the road. One aspect potentially driving the observed patterns was the increasing proportion of planted non-native woody tree species within páramo grassland near the road, which may have caused reduced abundances of shrubby páramo bird species there. While roads represented a clear impact on the composition of bird species in the páramo, the major effect seems to be driven by the introduction of non-native plant species along the roadside. In order to reduce the impact of roads to a minimum, we suggest that park managers should control the introduction of such plant species.  相似文献

Tumor Necrosis Factor (TNF), initially known for its tumor cytotoxicity, is a potent mediator of inflammation, as well as many normal physiological functions in homeostasis and health, and anti-microbial immunity. It also appears to have a central role in neurobiology, although this area of TNF biology is only recently emerging. Here, we review the basic biology of TNF and its normal effector functions, and discuss the advantages and disadvantages of therapeutic neutralization of TNF – now a commonplace practice in the treatment of a wide range of human inflammatory diseases. With over ten years of experience, and an emerging range of anti-TNF biologics now available, we also review their modes of action, which appear to be far more complex than had originally been anticipated. Finally, we highlight the current challenges for therapeutic intervention of TNF: (i) to discover and produce orally delivered small molecule TNF-inhibitors, (ii) to specifically target selected TNF producing cells or individual (diseased) tissue targets, and (iii) to pre-identify anti-TNF treatment responders. Although the future looks bright, the therapeutic modulation of TNF now moves into the era of personalized medicine with society's challenging expectations of durable treatment success and of achieving long-term disease remission.  相似文献

Host–parasite interactions are characterised by a lack of stable species-specific traits that limits generalisations one can make even about particular host or parasite species. For instance, the virulence, life history traits or transmission mode of a given parasite species can depend on which of its suitable hosts it infects. In the search for general rules or patterns, meta-analysis provides a possible solution to the challenges posed by the highly variable outcomes of host–parasite interactions. It allows an estimate of the overall association between any factor and its biological response that transcends the particulars of given host and parasite taxonomic combinations. In this review, we begin with a historical overview of the use of meta-analysis in research on the ecology and evolution of host–parasite interactions. We then identify several key conceptual advances that were made possible only through meta-analytical synthesis. For example, meta-analysis revealed the predominant association between rates of host and parasite gene flow and local adaptation, as well as an unexpected latitudinal gradient in parasite virulence, or parasite-induced host mortality. Finally, we propose some areas of research on host–parasite interactions that are based on a mature theoretical foundation and for which there now exist sufficient primary results to make them ripe for meta-analysis. The search for the processes causing variability in parasite species richness among host species, and the link between the expression of host resistance and the specificity of parasites, are two such research areas. The main objective of this review is to promote meta-analysis as a synthetic tool overriding the idiosyncrasies of specific host–parasite combinations and capable of uncovering the universal trends, if any, in the evolutionary ecology of parasitism.  相似文献

Altitudinal variation of the zonal superpáramo vegetation was studied between 4300 and 4630 m to test a possible occurrence of a fine altitudinal zonation within the superpáramo belt. A rectangular grid of 1 m2 sample plots was established; 25 replicate plots separated by a 3 m space were located along a 100 m long transect parallel to the contours, and there were 17 such transects separated by 20 m of altitude. Species were scored using a 7-grade cover scale and basic environmental data were gathered for each sample. Major changes occur over a short altitudinal range, at around 4400 m, which corresponds to a transition between the lower and upper superpáramo. Species richness sharply declines but species turnover (per altitude) increases along the altitudinal gradient. The correlation between richness and bare ground or rock cover is negative, but the correlation to rocks becomes positive above 4500 m. Species from lower altitudes tend to have narrower altitudinal range, although a large number of species appear to be indifferent to altitude. Direct ordination analyses indicate that high-altitude species show stronger correlation to environmental variables, especially rock, than species from lower altitudes. TWINSPAN cluster analysis delimited 15 groups of samples. There is a change in the clustering pattern along the altitudinal gradient from a horizontal (i.e., within altitude) to vertical (i.e., across altitude) arrangement of the cluster groups, although this pattern is partly obscured at the highest altitudes due to a large number of empty samples. MANOVA tests for samples from adjacent altitudinal levels indicate two distinct altitudinal breaks at lower altitudes, corresponding to the Loricaria-belt in lower superpáramo and the transition between lower and upper superpáramo, while no indication of a zonation was found in upper superpáramo.  相似文献
