This special issue of Chronobiology International presents a selection of papers originally delivered at the 18th International Symposium on Shift Work and Working Time, held at Yeppoon, Australia, in August 2007. The key theme of the symposium was “Aging and Working Time: Creating Safe Environments.” Older workers are widely believed to experience greater difficulty than younger workers adapting to shift work and irregular work schedules. However, while the three reviews of age effects published here (Costa & Di Milia, ; Folkard, ; Gander & Signal, ) identify evidence that older workers do indeed adapt less well, they also demonstrate that much more research is urgently required. The remaining papers address various aspects of the impact of work schedules on health, safety, sleep, and performance. They can be divided into three broad categories: circadian and other periodic factors; sleep, sleepiness, and fatigue; and other aspects of health and adjustment. This collection of papers showcases the best of contemporary research on the safety and health effects of working hours, continuing the tradition established by the two previous issues of the journal devoted to earlier symposia on shift work and working time.  相似文献

This special issue of the Journal of Mammalian Evolution represents the proceedings from a symposium held in conjunction with the 9th International Congress of Vertebrate Morphology (ICVM IX, Punta del Este, Uruguay, July 29, 2010), and entitled “Form and Function in the Xenarthra.” This symposium was the third on xenarthran biology to be presented in association with the ICVM meetings. In this brief introduction to the symposium proceedings, we plan to discuss the justification for the symposium, to provide a brief history of previous symposia and their results, and to introduce the contents of the present volume.  相似文献

It constitutes the fifth such issue of the journal since 2004 dedicated to the selected proceedings to the meetings of the Working Time Society. The key theme of the 20th Symposium was "Biological Mechanisms, Recovery, and Risk Management in the 24-h Society." The collection of papers of this dedicated issue represents the best of contemporary research on the effects of night and rotating shift schedules on worker health and safety. The contents cover such topics as sleep restriction, injuries, health, and performance of night work and rotating shiftwork, plus light treatment as a countermeasure against the circadian disruption of shiftwork. The majority of the papers are observational field studies, including some of large sample size, and three studies are well-designed laboratory experiments.  相似文献

Attendance at the 9th International Symposium on Aquatic Weeds, held in Dublin in 1994, by 270 delegates from 35 different countries demonstrated the continuing interest in the management and ecology of freshwater plants. The relative importance of the various topics covered in this meeting is compared with that of the previous symposia (1967–1990) for which published proceedings are available. A shift of interest away from aquatic weed control towards ecology, plant-environment interactions and distribution is noted and demonstrates a growing recognition of the need for aquatic plant management. The interest in physical control has remained constant (5–12% of papers) whilst the interest shown in biological control over the period 1971 to 1982 has not been sustained in recent symposia. The international nature of the symposia has increased over the years with papers published rising from eight countries in the 1967, 1971 and 1974 symposia to 23, 18 and 20 in the last three. Consistent numbers of contributions have been made by delegates from the Netherlands, the Czech Republic and the United Kingdom with a significant and sustained increase since 1967 from the United States of America.  相似文献

This special issue emerged from a symposium held during the 20th Congress of the International Primatological Society in Torino, Italy, in August 2004. The symposium brought together scientists studying several different aspects of olfaction in primates. The topics addressed ranged from the morphology and physiology of the sensory apparatus, the genetics and chemistry of olfactory signals and the use of such signals in primate communication, to a comparative analysis of the role of olfaction in neural evolution. The papers in this issue reflect a surge of interest in diverse aspects of olfaction-an interest that has been stimulated by the more rigorous theoretical approaches and new techniques that have recently become available. This introduction briefly reviews past research on primate olfaction, summarizes the scope of this special issue, and provides a somewhat speculative glimpse of the future.  相似文献

Foreword     
The Eighth International Symposium on Tardigrada was hosted by the Department of Invertebrate Zoology, Zoological Museum, University of Copenhagen and held at the August Krogh Institute from 30 July to 5 August 2000. There were 65 participants at the symposium. Like its predecessors, the symposium presented oral presentations and posters on a wide variety of tardigradological themes, and several invited speakers gave special keynote lectures about molecular biology, computer cladistics, phylogeny, cryptobiosis and palaeontology. Fifty four abstracts were published in the “Booklet of Abstracts” edited by Jesper G. Hansen. The 41 papers appearing in this special issue of Zoologischer Anzeiger represent most of the contributions presented in Copenhagen. Furthermore, a workshop on Arctic Tardigrades was held at Danish Arctic Station, Qeqertarsuaq, Greenland from, 7 to 18 August 2000. There were 15 participants on this Greenlandic Adventure.  相似文献

The International Triticeae Symposia were initiated to encourage scientists working on different aspects of the Triticeae1 to share information and examine the distant relatives of its cereal species. There have now been seven symposia, each in a different country. The scope of these symposia is briefly reviewed. The evolution of the various hearing adaptations is connected to major structural changes in nearly all groups of vertebrates. Besides hearing, the detection of acceleration and orientation in space are key functions of this mechanosensory system. The symposium “show me your ear – the inner and middle ear in vertebrates” held at the 11th International Congress of Vertebrate Morphology (ICVM) 2016 in Washington, DC (USA) intended to present current research addressing adaptation and evolution of the vertebrate otic region, auditory ossicles, vestibular system, and hearing physiology. The symposium aimed at an audience with interest in hearing research focusing on morphological, functional, and comparative studies. The presented talks and posters lead to the contributions of this virtual issue highlighting recent advances in the vertebrate balance and hearing system. This article serves as an introduction to the virtual issue contributions and intends to give a short overview of research papers focusing on vertebrate labyrinth and middle ear related structures in past and recent years.  相似文献

1. This paper is an introduction to a special issue of Freshwater Biology containing selected papers from the First International Symposium on Riverine Landscapes held in March 2001 in Switzerland.
2. The primary goal of the symposium was to synthesise present understanding of riverine landscapes from the perspectives of different disciplines. A landscape approach was used to address interactions between patterns and processes, in the context of spatial heterogeneity, across scales in physical and biological systems.
3. The three main themes were: (i) hydrogeomorphic processes, (ii) biological dynamics and (iii) human influences in riverine landscapes.  相似文献

Summary The existence of the Working Group for Data-Processing in Phytosociology spans about six years, 1969–1975. Its activities are summarized and a series of papers to appear in Vegetatio, presenting results of various numerical treatments, mainly of salt marsh vegetation, is introduced. A survey is given of seven releve selections to which treatments were applied. Five main fields of activities are discussed: systematical data-processing, rearrangement of phytosociological tables, development of classification and ordination techniques, numerical syntaxonomy, and theoretical phytosociology.The establishment of the Working Group for Theoretical Phytosociology and its first symposium on theoretical aspects is announced.Contribution from the Working Group for Data-Processing in Phytosociology, International Society for Vegetation Science.  相似文献

This special issue of the Journal of Mammalian Evolution coincides with the proceedings from a symposium held in conjunction with the 4th International Palaeontological Congress (IPC4, Mendoza, Argentina; September 28, 2014), entitled “Cenozoic evolution of TRopical-Equatorial MAmmals,” and abbreviated as TREMA. In this short introduction to the symposium proceedings, in which we present the contents of the current issue, we discuss the pivotal role of the mammalian fossil record at low latitudes for understanding the origin, structural organization, and dynamics of present mammalian biodiversity.  相似文献

Synopsis Skates have become a concern in recent years due to the preponderance of these elasmobranchs that are caught as bycatch or as a directed fishery. This has raised concern because skates have life history characteristics that may make them vulnerable to over-exploitation. It was due to this increasing awareness and concern about these batoids that prompted us to organize an international symposium on the “Biology of Skates”. The aims and goals of the symposium were to bring together an international group of researchers to meet, discuss, perhaps develop collaborations, and present their most recent findings. The symposium was held over two days, on 13–14 July, 2006, in conjunction with the 22nd annual meeting of the American Elasmobranch Society in New Orleans, LA. A total of 31 authors from four countries contributed 16 papers that appear in this special issue. The papers are broadly arranged into four separate categories: systematics and biogeography, diet and feeding ecology, reproductive biology, and age and growth. To the best of our knowledge this is the first dedicated book on the biology of skates. We hope that readers will find this issue of interest and that it helps encourage and stimulate future research into these fascinating fishes.  相似文献

“Balancing Interests”, the theme of the 17th International Symposium on Shift Work and Working Time held in Hoofddorp, The Netherlands (September 2005), refers to the ambition to reach an optimal balance between the various aspects of shift work. Economic, ergonomic, physical, and psychosocial factors all interact in determining the impact of shift work at the individual, organizational, and societal level. It is the challenge of this multidisciplinary field of research to model all relevant factors in such a way that it will allow us to optimize the dynamic trade-off between the yield and the risk of shift work. The organizers of the 17th International Symposium and the co-editors of these proceedings are convinced that the high quality of the contributions will bring us closer to this ultimate goal.  相似文献

In many viviparous vertebrates, pregnant females sustain their developing embryos and provide them with nutrients by means of placentas and a diversity of other types of specializations. With this article, we introduce a virtual (online) issue of the Journal of Morphology that presents 12 recent papers on fetal maintenance in viviparous vertebrates. We also outline the history of research in this area and document the central role of morphology in helping to explain the function and evolution of specializations for fetal nutrition. This virtual issue of the Journal of Morphology is an outgrowth of a symposium held under auspices of the International Congress of Vertebrate Morphology. The included papers reflect a diversity of taxa, research methods, and biological issues. To celebrate the publication of this virtual issue of the Journal of Morphology, the publisher is making freely available to readers a number of other relevant papers published in the journal over the past 128 years. Because of their small size and tolerance to many of the control procedures used for a wide variety of commodities, Acari species have become one of the fastest, unwanted pest travelers since the beginning of this century. This special issue includes eleven studies on adventive and invasive Acari species affecting major crops and livestock around the world. The nucleus for this special issue is formed by the presentations in the symposium on invasive mites and ticks organized at the International Congress of Acarology in Recife, Brazil (ICA-13), in the summer of 2010. This special issue illustrates the increased concerns about domestic and international invasive mites and ticks worldwide.  相似文献
