AbstractThe present study explores the sorption properties of shelled Moringa oleifera seeds (SMOS) for removal of two environmentally important oxidation states of chromium (trivalent and hexavalent) from an aqueous system on the laboratory scale. Sorption studies reveal the optimum conditions for the removal of 81.02%; Cr (III) and 88.15% Cr (VI) as follows: biomass dosage (4.0 g), metal concentration [25mg/L for Cr (III); 50mg/L for Cr (VI)], contact time (40 minutes) at pH 6.5 and 2.5 respectively. The adsorption data were found to fit well both the Freundlich and Langmuir isotherms. Characterization of the seed powder by FTIR showed the clear presence of amino acid moieties having both positively charged amino and negatively charged carboxylic groups and confirmed that biosorption involves amino acid-chromium interactions. SEM studies of native and exhausted [Cr(III) and Cr(VI)] treated SMOS revealed large spherical clusters having a pore area of 8.66 µm2 in the case of native SMOS while dense agglomerated etched dendrite type morphology have a pore area of 0.80 µm2 in Cr (III) and 0.78 µm2 in Cr (VI) treated SMOS The spent biosorbent was regenerated and found to be effectively reusable for four cycles. 相似文献

Shrimp farming has experienced rising costs as a result of disease outbreaks associated with Vibrio spp. Suitable strategies for disease prevention and control are therefore urgently needed. This study aimed to evaluate the antimicrobial effect of Moringa oleifera seed powder against Vibrio cholerae in the rearing water of Pacific white shrimp (Penaeus vannamei) postlarvae. In vitro assays included the determination of minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of M. oleifera seed powder against V. cholerae, whereas in vivo assays included the effect of M. oleifera seed powder on bacterial load and water quality parameters in the rearing tanks, as well as its effect on shrimp postlarvae survival. M. oleifera seed powder inhibited the growth of V. cholerae with MIC values of 62·5 µg ml−1. Moreover, seawater pH of treated tanks (8·66) was significantly lower (P < 0·01) than pH of the control tanks (9·02), whereas the visibility of treated tanks (37·08 cm) was significantly higher (P < 0·01) as compared to control tanks (35·37 cm). Likewise, V. cholerae load was significantly reduced (P < 0·01) from 4·7 × 104 to 3·1 × 103 CFU per ml in tanks treated with M. oleifera seed powder. Altogether, this study demonstrates the antimicrobial activity of M. oleifera against V. cholerae in shrimp culture. 相似文献

为了探讨干热河谷盆地辣木种植密度与分枝格局和生物量的关系及较为合理的种植密度,通过野外实地调查和数据分析对该地区不同栽培密度辣木人工林分枝格局及生物量进行研究,结果表明:辣木林分在株高、地径、冠幅以及分枝数量方面与栽培密度呈现显著负相关;不同密度下,根、茎、叶生物量及果荚数和果荚均长、直径和果荚均仔粒数之间都存在显著的差异性;栽培密度对辣木的分枝格局有较显著影响,主要表现在一级/二级分枝率、二级/三级分枝率以及三级分枝长度上有显著差异;辣木在不同方位上分枝格局有明显差异,主要体现在主、侧枝分枝长度和一级分枝角度上的差异显著;在本试验范围内,以叶用辣木为培育目标的较适宜的栽培密度为株行距0.9m×0.9m,以果用为栽培目标的较适宜的栽培密度为株行距1.5m×1.5m。在不同的栽培密度下,辣木人工林之间分枝格局及生物量的显著性差异,反映了辣木随环境的变化具有较高的形态可塑性和生态适应性。 相似文献

Aims: The aim of this work was to analyse the coagulant and antibacterial activities of lectin isolated from Moringa oleifera seeds that are used for water treatment. Methods and Results: The water‐soluble M. oleifera lectin (WSMoL) was separated from nonhemagglutinating components (NHC) by chitin chromatography. WSMoL fluorescence spectrum was not altered in the presence of ions that are often present in high concentrations in polluted waters. Seed extract, NHC and WSMoL showed coagulant activity on a turbid water model. Both NHC and WSMoL reduced the growth of Staphylococcus aureus, but only WSMoL caused a reduction in Escherichia coli. WSMoL was also more effective in reducing the growth of ambient lake water bacteria. Conclusions: Data obtained from this study indicate that WSMoL is a potential natural biocoagulant for water, reducing turbidity, suspended solids and bacteria. Significance and Impact of the Study: Moringa oleifera seeds are a material effective in the treatment of water. 相似文献

The effects of Moringa oleifera (MO), Moringaceae on hyperlipidemia and hepatocyte ultrastructural changes caused by iron deficiency were investigated. Four-week-old male Wistar-strain rats were fed a control diet based on AIN-93G (C), an iron deficient diet (FeD), a FeD + 0.5% MO (FeD-m) diet, or a FeD + MO 1% (FeD-M) diet for 4 weeks. It was found that MO reduced iron-deficient diet-induced increases in serum and hepatic lipids with dose-dependent increases of serum quercetin and kaempherol, but did not prevent anemia. By electron microscopy, in iron deficient hepatocytes, slightly swollen mitochondria and few glycogen granules were observed, but glycogen granules increased and mitochondria were normalized by treatment with MO. Furthermore, lipoproteins were observed in the Golgi complex under treatment with MO. These results suggest a possible beneficial effect of MO in the prevention of hyperlipidemia and ultrastructural changes in hepatocytes due to iron-deficiency. 相似文献

Higher biosorption percentage was evidenced at lower initial concentration of Cr(VI) ion, while the sorption capacity of the
biomass increased with rising concentration of ions. Biomass as low as 0.8 g l−1 could biosorb 95% Cr(VI) ions within 2,880 min from an aqueous solution of 400 mg l−1 Cr(VI) concentration. Optimum pH and temperature for Cr(VI) biosorption were 2.0 and 50°C, respectively. Kinetic studies

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is currently the most common chronic liver disease in the world, with a prevalence of 25 % in many countries. To date, no drug has been approved to treat NAFLD, therefore, the use of phytochemicals to prevent this disease is meaningful. In this study, we focused on the effects of Moringa oleifera Lam. on diabetes, attempted to isolate compounds that regulate NAFLD. Compounds 1 and 2 were isolated from the ethyl acetate fraction of M. oleifera. Spectral data revealed that they were 1-hydroxy-3-phenylpropan-2-yl benzoate ( 1 ) and benzyl benzylcarbamate ( 2 ), respectively. The three-dimensional structure of compound 1 was determined by single crystal X-ray structural analysis. Neither compound was toxic to HepG2 cells, and compound 1 was found to have a concentration-dependent inhibitory effect on intracellular lipid accumulation induced by stimulation of linoleic acid (LA). As a result of measuring the effects of compound 1 on the intracellular lipid production-related protein, it was found that compound 1 enhanced protein expression that promotes lipolysis. On the other hand, since the action of compound 1 was similar to that of PPARα agonists, it is deduced that compound 1 enhanced the activity of PPARα and further enhanced the expression of lipolytic proteins, which is related to the suppression of intracellular lipid accumulation. Furthermore, as the result of docking simulation, compound 1 had a higher binding affinity to the ligand binding site of PPARα than fenofibrate, which is a PPARα agonist, and thus compound 1 was considered to be promising as an agonist of PPARα. 相似文献

Aside from its excellent mechanical properties, spider silk (SS) would offer an active surface for heavy metal interaction due to its rich protein structure. The present study describes the potential use of natural (SS) as a sorbent of heavy metals from aqueous solutions. Single and multi-species biosorption experiments of heavy metals by natural SS were conducted using batch and column experiments. The biosorption kinetics, in general, was found to follow the second-order rate expression, and the experimental equilibrium biosorption data fitted reasonably well to Freundlich isotherm. From the Freundlich isotherm, the biosorption capacities of Cu(II) and Pb(II) ions onto SS were found as 0.20 and 0.007 mmol g?1, respectively. Moringa oleifera is an important multipurpose tree introduced to Africa from India at the turn of this century. Despite limited knowledge of the levels of genetic diversity and relatedness of introduced populations, their utilization as a source of seed for planting is widespread. In order to facilitate reasoned scientific decisions on its management and conservation and prepare for a selective breeding programme, genetic analysis of seven populations was performed using amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) markers. The four pairs of AFLP primers ( Pst I/ Mse I) generated a total of 236 amplification products of which 157 (66.5%) were polymorphic between or within populations. Analysis of molecular variance ( AMOVA ) revealed significant differences between regions and populations, even though outcrossing perennial plants are expected to maintain most variation within populations. A phenetic tree illustrating relationships between populations suggested at least two sources of germplasm introductions to Kenya. The high levels of population differentiation detected suggest that provenance source is an important factor in the conservation and exploitation of M. oleifera genetic resources. 相似文献

The natural coagulant Moringa oleifera lectin (MoL) as cationic protein is a promising candidate in coagulation process of water treatment plant. Introducing the gene encoding MoL into a host, Pichia pastoris, to secrete soluble recombinant protein is assessed in this study. Initial screening using PCR confirmed the insertion of MoL gene, and SDS-PAGE analysis detected the MoL protein at 8 kDa. Cultured optimization showed the highest MoL protein at 520 mg/L was observed at 28 °C for 144 h of culturing by induction in 1% methanol. Approximately, 0.40 mg/mL of recombinant MoL protein showed 95 ± 2% turbidity removal of 1% kaolin suspension. In 0.1% kaolin suspension, the concentration of MoL at 10 μg/mL exhibits the highest turbidity reduction at 68 ± 1%. Thus, recombinant MoL protein from P. pastoris is an effective coagulant for water treatment. 相似文献

辣木是亚洲和非洲广泛种植的一种药食同源植物。辣木生长快、种子产量高,每公顷辣木可产种子24 t。辣木种子含油19%~47%,蛋白质10%~52%,硫代葡萄糖苷及其水解产物异硫氰酸酯6.2%~8.6%。辣木油具有抗氧化、抗菌和抗炎作用,其不饱和脂肪酸含量高达71.7%~83.1%,是优质的食用油来源。辣木蛋白具有抗菌作用,是良好的食用和饲料用蛋白源。辣木种子所含硫代葡萄糖苷及其水解产物异硫氰酸酯有抗炎、抗肿瘤和降血糖等作用。辣木种子具有较高的开发利用价值。本文综述辣木种子上述四种主要成分分离制备和功能应用的研究进展,为辣木种子综合开发利用提供参考。 相似文献

A unicellular green microalga, Chlorella sorokiniana, was immobilized on loofa (Luffa cylindrica) sponge and successfully used as a new biosorption system for the removal of lead(II) ions from aqueous solutions. The biosorption of lead(II) ions on both free and immobilized biomass of C. sorokiniana was investigated using aqueous solutions in the concentration range of 10–300 mg/L. The biosorption of lead(II) ions by C. sorokiniana biomass increased as the initial concentration of lead(II) ions increased in the medium. The maximum biosorption capacity for free and immobilized biomass of C. sorokiniana was found to be 108.04 and 123.67 mg lead(II)/g biomass, respectively. The biosorption kinetics were found to be fast, with 96 % of adsorption within the first 5 min and equilibrium reached at 15 min. The adsorption of lead(II) both by free and immobilized C. sorokiniana biomass followed the Langmuir isotherm. The biosorption capacities were detected to be dependent on the pH of the solution; and the maximum adsorption was obtained at a solution pH of about 5. The effect of light metal ions on lead(II) uptake was also studied and it was shown that the presence of light metal ions did not significantly affect lead(II) uptake. The loofa sponge‐immobilized C. sorokiniana biomass could be regenerated using 0.1 M HCl, with up to 99 % recovery. The desorbed biomass was used in five biosorption‐desorption cycles, and no noticeable loss in the biosorption capacity was observed. In addition, fixed bed breakthrough curves for lead(II) removal were presented. These studies demonstrated that loofa sponge‐immobilized biomass of C. sorokiniana could be used as an efficient biosorbent for the treatment of lead(II) containing wastewater. 相似文献

AbstractThe study investigates the presence and quantity of antimicrobial sinigrin glucosinolates in tomato leaves after spraying them with moringa (Moringa oleifera) leaf extract (MLAE). Moringa concentrates (0.5, 0.75, 1.00 and 1.5?kg?L?1 (w v?1)) were prepared. Distilled water was the control. Sampled tomato leaves were air-dried, freeze-dried and extracted firstly using pure methanol in a hot water bath and then pellet re-extracted using 5?mL of hot aqueous methanol (70% v v?1). An ion exchange column, and sulphatase was used to achieve glucosiodesulphonation. High performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) was employed in the identification and quantitative analysis of the sinigrin glucosinolates. Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) leaves treated with MLAE revealed highly significant (p?<?.001) content of sinigrin glucosinolates. The sinigrin standard and the desulphated sinigrin glucosinolates had a 7?s retention time difference; 5?kg?L?1 (w v?1) resulted in a superior amount of sinigrin in tomato leaves as compared to all the other MLAE concentrations. The study reveals that spraying MLAE on putatively diseased tomato leaves donates specific quantifiable glucosinolates like sinigrin, which may be involved in defense against tomato diseases and, hence, recommends use of 5?kg?L?1 (w v?1) for the highest sinigrin defense tag. 相似文献

目的: 探讨辣木叶黄精多糖组合物的抗疲劳作用,并探讨相关的机制。方法: 将30只雄性昆明小鼠随机分为正常对照组(C)、组合物组(MP),每组15只。C组灌胃蒸馏水,MP组灌胃组合物,每组灌胃体积均为0.5 ml。每日灌胃,处理14 d后进行负重游泳实验,按小鼠体质量的3%进行尾部负重,记录力竭游泳时间。在另一项实验中,将48只雄性昆明小鼠随机分为安静对照组(QC)、游泳对照组(SC)、组合物组(MP),每组16只。QC和SC组灌胃蒸馏水,MP组灌胃组合物,灌胃体积均为0.5 ml,每日灌胃,处理14 d。实验第15日,灌胃30 min后,QC组立即取血、肝脏和后腿骨骼肌;SC和MP组进行90 min非负重游泳实验,游泳结束后取血液、肝脏、后腿骨骼肌。采用试剂盒测定血清、组织中的疲劳相关指标、氧化/抗氧化指标、能量代谢指标。结果: MP组小鼠力竭游泳时间较C组显著延长(P<0.05)。与对照组比较,非负重游泳显著降低小鼠血糖和血清谷胱甘肽(GSH)水平、肝糖原和肝脏ATP含量,抑制肝脏超氧化物歧化酶(SOD)、乳酸脱氢酶(LDH)和ATP酶活性,以及肌肉谷胱甘肽过氧化物酶(GSH-Px)活性(P<0.05)。而血尿素氮(BUN)和血清丙二醛(MDA)水平显著升高(P<0.05)。与SC组比较,MP显著增加小鼠血糖和肝糖原含量,增加血清GSH水平、肝脏SOD活性、肌肉GSH-Px活性,增强肝脏LDH、ATP酶活性,增加肝脏ATP含量(P<0.05),降低血清BUN(P<0.05)。结论: 辣木叶黄精多糖组合物具有抗疲劳作用,抗氧化和改善能量代谢可能是其发挥作用的重要机制。 相似文献

Aedes aegypti control is crucial to reducing dengue fever. Aedes aegypti larvae have developed resistance to organophosporous insecticides and the use of natural larvicides may help manage larval resistance by increasing elements in insecticide rotation programs. Here, we report on larvicidal activity of Moringa oleifera flower extract against A. aegypti L(1), L(2), L(3), and L(4) as well as the effect of flower extract on gut trypsin and whole-larval acetylcholinesterase from L(4.) In addition, the heated flower extract was investigated for larvicidal activity against L(4) and effect on larval gut trypsin. Moringa oleifera flower extract contains a proteinaceous trypsin inhibitor (M. oleifera flower trypsin inhibitor, MoFTI), triterpene (β-amyrin), sterol (β-sitosterol) as well as flavonoids (kaempferol and quercetin). Larvicidal activity was detected against L(2), L(3), and L(4) (LC(50) of 1.72%, 1.67%, and 0.92%, respectively). Flower extract inhibited L(4) gut trypsin (MoFTI K(i) = 0.6 nM) and did not affect acetylcholinesterase activity. In vivo assay showed that gut trypsin activity from L(4) treated with M. oleifera flower extract decreased over time (0-1,440 min) and was strongly inhibited (98.6%) after 310 min incubation; acetylcholinesterase activity was not affected. Thermal treatment resulted in a loss of trypsin inhibitor and larvicidal activities, supporting the hypothesis that flower extract contains a proteinaceous trypsin inhibitor that may be responsible for the deleterious effects on larval mortality. 相似文献

This study investigates the equilibrium, kinetics and thermodynamics of Nickel(II) biosorption from aqueous solution by the fungal mat of Trametes versicolor (rainbow) biomass. The optimum biosorption conditions like pH, contact time, biomass dosage, initial metal ion concentration and temperaturewere determined in the batch method. The biosorbent was characterized by FTIR, SEM and BET surface area analysis. The experimental data were analyzed in terms of pseudo-first-order, pseudo-secondorder and intraparticle diffusion kinetic models, further it was observed that the biosorption process of Ni(II) ions closely followed pseudo-second-order kinetics. The equilibrium data of Ni(II) ions at 303, 313, and 323 K were fitted to the Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models. Langmuir isotherm provided a better fit to the equilibrium data andthe maximum monolayer biosorption capacity of the T. versicolor(rainbow) biomass for Ni(II) was 212.5 mg/g at pH 4.0. The calculated thermodynamic parameters, ΔG○, ΔH○, and ΔS○, demonstrated that the biosorption of Ni(II) ions onto the T. versicolor (rainbow) biomass was feasible, spontaneous and endothermic at 303 ~ 323 K. The performance of the proposed fungal biosorbent was also compared with that of many other reported sorbents for Nickel(II) removal and it was observed that the proposed biosorbent is effective in terms of its high sorption capacity. 相似文献

A freshwater filamentous green alga Spirogyra sp. was used as an inexpensive and efficient biosorbent for the removal of C.I. Acid Orange 7 (AO7), C.I. Basic Red 46 (BR46) and C.I. Basic Blue 3 (BB3) dyes from contaminated water. The effects of various physico–chemical parameters on dye removal efficiency were investigated, e.g. contact time, pH, initial dyes concentration, the amount of alga, temperature and biosorbent particle size. Dyes biosorption was a quick process and reactions reached to equilibrium conditions within 60 min. The biosorption capacity of three dyes onto alga was found in the following order: BR46 > BB3> AO7. The values of thermodynamic parameters, including ΔG, ΔH and ΔS, indicated that the biosorption of the dyes on the dried Spirogyra sp. biomass was feasible, spontaneous and endothermic. The pseudo-first order, pseudo-second order and the intraparticle diffusion models were applied to the experimental data in order to kinetically describe the removal mechanism of dyes, with the second one showing the best fit with the experimental kinetic biosorption data (R2 = 0.99). It was also found that the adsorption process followed the Freundlich isotherm model with the highest value of correlation coefficients (0.99) and the biosorption capacity being estimated to be 13.2, 12.2 and 6.2 mg g−1 for BR46, BB3 and AO7, respectively. 相似文献
