South American freshwater stingrays of the family Potamotrygonidae have long been popular worldwide as ornamentals in the aquarium trade. Despite this, there have so far not been any reported cases of their establishment elsewhere in the world. Here, we document the ocellate river stingray, Potamotrygon motoro, as having established itself in Singapore. Acipenser gueldenstaedtii is a species of sturgeon described from Caspian Sea and Black Sea and their tributaries, occurring in the Eastern Atlantic, Europe and Middle East. This and other two sturgeon species have been accidentally introduced in the Rio Negro, Uruguay, a tributary of the Rio de La Plata. Recently, it has been demonstrated the presence and establishment of A. gueldenstaedtii widespread in the Rio Paraná basin, the largest tributary of the Rio de La Plata, corresponding to the second largest river drainage in the Neotropics. We herein register the presence of the species in the next northern freshwater drainage in South America, representing the first record for Brazil. We further discuss the possibility of dispersal through marine environments to other freshwater drainages in South America through the analysis of its documented occurrence and marine ecoregions in southwestern Atlantic.  相似文献

Summary

The Lichen flora of Rhum is described with emphasis on its ecology. In general, the 387 species represent a fine example of eu-oceanic assemblages and contain many taxa typical of western Britain. The margins of freshwater lochs hold particularly rich communities; the flora of the serpentine is singular for its narrow range of species. There is some evidence that existing fragments of woodland have continuity with the ancient forest. Lecanactis plocina is reported new to Scotland.  相似文献

Background and AimsMuch of our understanding of the ecology and evolution of seed dispersal in the Neotropics is founded on studies involving the animal-dispersed, hyperdiverse plant clade Miconia (Melastomataceae). Nonetheless, no formal attempt has been made to establish its relevance as a model system or indeed provide evidence of the role of frugivores as Miconia seed dispersers.MethodsWe built three Miconia databases (fruit phenology/diaspore traits, fruit–frugivore interactions and effects on seed germination after gut passage) to determine how Miconia fruiting phenology and fruit traits for >350 species interact with and shape patterns of frugivore selection. In addition, we conducted a meta-analysis evaluating the effects of animal gut passage/seed handling on Miconia germination.Key Results Miconia produce numerous small berries that enclose numerous tiny seeds within water- and sugar-rich pulps. In addition, coexisting species provide sequential, year long availability of fruits within communities, with many species producing fruits in periods of resource scarcity. From 2396 pairwise interactions, we identified 646 animal frugivore species in five classes, 22 orders and 60 families, including birds, mammals, reptiles, fish and ants that consume Miconia fruits. Endozoochory is the main dispersal mechanism, but gut passage effects on germination were specific to animal clades; birds, monkeys and ants reduced seed germination percentages, while opossums increased it.ConclusionsThe sequential fruiting phenologies and wide taxonomic and functional diversity of animal vectors associated with Miconia fruits underscore the likely keystone role that this plant clade plays in the Neotropics. By producing fruits morphologically and chemically accessible to a variety of animals, Miconia species ensure short- and long-distance seed dispersal and constitute reliable resources that sustain entire frugivore assemblages.  相似文献

The freshwater crabs of the Neotropics comprise 311 species in two families (Pseudothelphusidae and Trichodactylidae) and one or both of these families are found in all of the countries in the Neotropical region (except for Chile and some of the Caribbean islands). Colombia (102 species, 81% endemic) and Mexico (67 species, 95% endemic) are the biodiversity hotspots of freshwater crab species richness and country-level endemism for this region. The results of the IUCN Red List conservation assessments show that 34% of pseudothelphusids and 10% of trichodactylids have an elevated risk of extinction, 29% of pseudothelphusids and 75% of trichodactylids are not at-risk (Least Concern), and although none are actually extinct, 56% of pseudothelphusids and 17% of trichodactylids are too poorly known to assess (Data Deficient). Colombia (14 species), Venezuela (7 species), Mexico (6 species), and Ecuador (5 species) are the countries with the highest number of threatened species of Neotropical freshwater crabs. The majority of threatened species are restricted-range semiterrestrial endemics living in habitats subjected to deforestation, alteration of drainage patterns, and pollution. This underlines the need to prioritize and develop conservation measures before species decline to levels from which they cannot recover. These results represent a baseline that can be used to design strategies to save threatened Neotropical species of freshwater crabs.  相似文献

SUMMARY

Data on the relative abundance, penetration and breeding biology of the freshwater mullet Mugil cephalus and the flathead mullet Mugil cephalus in the freshwater reaches of some Eastern Cape coastal rivers are described. The differences found between the two species indicate that Myxus capensis is more specialized for a catadromous life history in an unstable riverine environment. Evidence showing the importance of the freshwater phase for the latter species is given and the disastrous effects of the erection of barriers to fish movement are stressed.  相似文献

Abstract

Actualistic studies on mammalian carnivore taphonomy in southern South America are reviewed here, including pumas, small cats, foxes, and other, smaller carnivores. Patterns for different carnivore taxa and their variation are elicited. Also temporal and spatial variability is analysed, and comparisons are made to other carnivores and regions. While generally these Neotropical carnivores produce low damage intensity, stronger modifications and their implications are described as well. These patterns and their variation are put in context by taking into account the particular physical and biotic conditions in the southern Neotropics.  相似文献

Despite its wide, almost worldwide distribution, the mayfly genus Cloeon Leach, 1815 (Ephemeroptera: Baetidae) is restricted in the Western hemisphere to North America, where a single species is reported. In the Neotropics, except for some species wrongly attributed to the genus in the past, there are no records of Cloeon. Recently, however, specimens of true Cloeon were collected along the coast of Espírito Santo, Southeastern Brazil. In order to verify the hypothesis that this species was recently introduced to Brazil, our aim was to identify the species based on morphological and molecular characters and to confirm the presence of true representatives of the genus in the Neotropics. Our results revealed that the specimens found in Brazil belong to the Afrotropical species C. smaeleni Lestage, 1924. The identity of the species, its distribution, along with its previous absence in regularly sampled sites, is a clear sign that the specimens of C. smaeleni found in Espírito Santo are introduced, well established, and that the colonization took place very recently.  相似文献

Cleaning interactions are known among several groups of fishes, with a higher number of records for marine fish species. These temporary associations occur between one species that acts as the cleaner and the other species as the client. The interaction usually takes place within the boundaries defined by the cleaner. This site, known as the cleaning station, allows the client fish to strike a typical pose allowing the cleaner to approach, such as wide-open fins and inclined, motionless body. Few studies have reported on the cleaning behaviour of freshwater fish species, and none has reported on behaviour that could be interpreted as establishing a cleaning station. Herein we present a new record of the cleaning interaction in the Neotropics, between the cichlid Mesonauta festivus as the cleaner and three species of anostomid (Leporinus macrocephalus, Leporinus friderici and Schizodon borellii) as clients on Pantanal wetlands, as well as the establishment of a defined cleaning station.  相似文献

To predict the response of aquatic ecosystems to future global climate change, data on the ecology and distribution of keystone groups in freshwater ecosystems are needed. In contrast to mid‐ and high‐latitude zones, such data are scarce across tropical South America (Neotropics). We present the distribution and diversity of chironomid species using surface sediments of 59 lakes from the Andes to the Amazon (0.1–17°S and 64–78°W) within the Neotropics. We assess the spatial variation in community assemblages and identify the key variables influencing the distributional patterns. The relationships between environmental variables (pH, conductivity, depth, and sediment organic content), climatic data, and chironomid assemblages were assessed using multivariate statistics (detrended correspondence analysis and canonical correspondence analysis). Climatic parameters (temperature and precipitation) were most significant in describing the variance in chironomid assemblages. Temperature and precipitation are both predicted to change under future climate change scenarios in the tropical Andes. Our findings suggest taxa of Orthocladiinae, which show a preference to cold high‐elevation oligotrophic lakes, will likely see range contraction under future anthropogenic‐induced climate change. Taxa abundant in areas of high precipitation, such as Micropsectra and Phaenopsectra, will likely become restricted to the inner tropical Andes, as the outer tropical Andes become drier. The sensitivity of chironomids to climate parameters makes them important bio‐indicators of regional climate change in the Neotropics. Furthermore, the distribution of chironomid taxa presented here is a vital first step toward providing urgently needed autecological data for interpreting fossil chironomid records of past ecological and climate change from the tropical Andes.  相似文献

Summary

The Mhlathuze estuary in its present form was established during construction of the Richards Bay harbour during the early 1970s. This paper summarises available data on the zooplankton community as part of a study on the freshwater requirements of the estuary. The zooplankton community indicates a strong marine influence. The large tidal exchange prevents the establishment of a stable estuarine zooplankton community. The possible influences of changes in freshwater input are discussed.  相似文献

The biogeography of freshwater biota in the Korean Peninsula has been affected by recent geological processes and anthropogenic activity. The freshwater prawn, Palaemon paucidens, can serve as a non-fish model organism suitable for assessing these factors, as it is found in all river systems in the Korean Peninsula and may have been introduced by humans in some regions. In this study, we investigated the geographical distribution of genetic variation and the genetic structure of P. paucidens populations using mitochondrial DNA sequences and genotypes identified from four microsatellite loci. Our results showed that populations from westward-flowing river systems that drain into the Yellow Sea have more genetic diversity than those from southward-flowing river systems, and that the highest genetic variance revealed by analysis of molecular variance (AMOVA) using both genetic markers was observed in river systems grouped as HAN + GEUM, NAKDONG + JEJU, YOUNGSAN, and SEOMJIN. These results suggest that HAN and GEUM, in which freshwater prawn populations have higher levels of genetic diversity, were the most recently isolated river systems from Asian continental systems. Therefore, populations from HAN and GEUM experienced less severe bottlenecks than those from YOUNGSAN and SEOMJIN.  相似文献

Freshwater fish communities in Ecuador exhibit some of the highest levels of diversity and endemism in the Neotropics. Unfortunately, aquatic ecosystems in the country are under serious threat and conditions are deteriorating. In 2018–19, the government of Ecuador sponsored a series of workshops to examine the conservation status of Ecuador's freshwater fishes. Concerns were identified for 35 species, most of which are native to the Amazon region, and overfishing of Amazonian pimelodid catfishes emerged as a major issue. However, much of the information needed to make decisions across fish groups and regions was not available, hindering the process and highlighting the need for a review of the conservation threats to Ecuador's freshwater fishes. Here, we review how the physical alteration of rivers, deforestation, wetland and floodplain degradation, agricultural and urban water pollution, mining, oil extraction, dams, overfishing, introduced species and climate change are affecting freshwater fishes in Ecuador. Although many of these factors affect fishes throughout the Neotropics, the lack of data on Ecuadorian fish communities is staggering and highlights the urgent need for more research. We also make recommendations, including the need for proper enforcement of existing environmental laws, restoration of degraded aquatic ecosystems, establishment of a national monitoring system for freshwater ecosystems, investment in research to fill gaps in knowledge, and encouragement of public engagement in citizen science and conservation efforts. Freshwater fishes are an important component of the cultural and biological legacy of the Ecuadorian people. Conserving them for future generations is critical.  相似文献

AimAlthough patterns of biodiversity across the globe are well studied, there is still a controversial debate about the underlying mechanisms and their generality across biogeographic scales. In particular, it is unclear to what extent diversity patterns along environmental gradients are directly driven by abiotic factors, such as climate, or indirectly mediated through biotic factors, such as resource effects on consumers.LocationAndes, Southern Ecuador; Mt. Kilimanjaro, Tanzania.MethodsWe studied the diversity of fleshy‐fruited plants and avian frugivores at the taxonomic level, that is, species richness and abundance, as well as at the level of functional traits, that is, functional richness and functional dispersion. We compared two important biodiversity hotspots in mountain systems of the Neotropics and Afrotropics. We used field data of plant and bird communities, including trait measurements of 367 plant and bird species. Using structural equation modeling, we disentangled direct and indirect effects of climate and the diversity of plant communities on the diversity of bird communities.ResultsWe found significant bottom‐up effects of fruit diversity on frugivore diversity at the taxonomic level. In contrast, climate was more important for patterns of functional diversity, with plant communities being mostly related to precipitation, and bird communities being most strongly related to temperature.Main conclusionsOur results illustrate the general importance of bottom‐up mechanisms for the taxonomic diversity of consumers, suggesting the importance of active resource tracking. Our results also suggest that it might be difficult to identify signals of ecological fitting between functional plant and animal traits across biogeographic regions, since different species groups may respond to different climatic drivers. This decoupling between resource and consumer communities could increase under future climate change if plant and animal communities are consistently related to distinct climatic drivers.  相似文献

【背景】噬藻体是感染蓝藻的病毒,是水生系统的重要组成部分。它们对宿主种群死亡率有重要影响,是控制蓝藻水华生消的潜在因子,对蓝藻群落结构的调控具有重要意义。大量研究揭示了海洋和淡水环境中噬藻体的高度多样性,但目前对高原湿地中噬藻体的多样性知之甚少。【目的】阐明我国纳帕海高原湿地噬藻体g20基因的遗传多样性,为进一步开展高原湿地微生物资源及其生态功能研究提供理论基础。【方法】采集雨季的水体样品,以衣壳蛋白基因g20为标记基因,利用特异性引物Cps1和Cps8对其进行PCR扩增,得到26条不同的g20基因有效序列,并将其与其他生境中g20基因序列进行主坐标分析和系统发育分析。【结果】与其他海洋和淡水的噬藻体序列相比,纳帕海高原湿地中噬藻体的序列与其他稻田序列更为相近;但也存在部分序列单独聚簇,这可能为纳帕海高原湿地中独有的噬藻体类型。【结论】表明该地区的噬藻体较丰富,并具有一定的独特性。  相似文献

We assessed the presence of independent evolving lineages of the trahira, Hoplias malabaricus, one of the few freshwater fish species having wide distribution in the Neotropics which is the region with the highest global diversity of freshwater fish. To achieve that goal, 58 mitochondrial sequences of cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI; DNA barcoding) were generated from collected samples and 85 obtained from public databases, which were analyzed in comparison to chromosomal and geological data. The magnitude of genetic diversity found among different sampling sites was greater than 2%. Molecular species delimitation methods indicated the existence of a least four distinct lineages. The recognised cytotypes did not form monophyletic groups, suggesting that the karyotypic macrostructure could be a homoplastic character. The haplotype relationships suggested secondary contacts between the ecoregions of Northern and Northeastern Brazil that were shaped by coastal routes between adjacent watersheds during the Pleistocene epoch and probable exchanges of their ichthyofaunas. Our results indicated that multiple factors have driven the diversification of H. malabaricus, from ancient geological events linked to the reactivation of tectonic faults to more recent occurrences related to eustatic changes in ocean levels. Ultimately, the magnitude of its genetic diversity suggests the necessity of revising its taxonomic status.  相似文献

Burmeistera, Centropogon, and Siphocampylus together comprise more than 500 species endemic to the Neotropics, Current knowledge of these genera is unsatisfactory, with much diversity yet to be described. Over the past seven years, one out of every 28 specimens received for identification has represented a new species, many characterized by unique or unusual character states. Siphocampylus smilax (Bolivia) is unique in the genus in its parallelodromous leaf venation and extra-floral nectaries. Centropogon dianae (Peru) cannot be accommodated in any recognized infrageneric taxon, and a new section, Centropogon sect. Niveopsis, is proposed for it. The flowers of C. steinii (Ecuador) are the smallest known in the genus, while C. connatilobatus (Venezuela) is the first species to combine arbusculiform pubescence and connate calyx lobes. Burmeistera venezuelensis is only the second species of the genus known to occur in Venezuela and the first to be endemic; similarly, Centropogon wilburii is only the third species of Centropogon known from Mexico and the first to be endemic to that country.
