Parturition in sheep is initiated by the fetus and is preceded by a rise in fetal cortisol and corticosteroid-binding globulin (CBG) late in gestation. In this study plasma cortisol and CBG concentrations were measured in fetal and maternal circulation from 40 days gestation to early post-partum. The fetal cortisol profile was shown to be triphasic in nature; being high in both the first and last trimester but low in the middle period of gestation. In the last trimester, total cortisol increased steadily, reaching it's highest level just prior to parturition (145 days gestation), before falling to maternal levels over the first 10 days post-partum. The changes seen in CBG concentrations throughout gestation and post-partum mirrored the triphasic nature seen in cortisol levels. CBG was significantly higher at 40, 56 and 140 days gestation than at mid-gestation (77 and 90 days). However, at 145 days gestation there was a significant fall in CBG levels. CBG levels were higher at 1 day post-partum when compared to 145 days gestation, the former rapidly falling to maternal levels over the subsequent 9 days. The maximum binding capacity at 40, 56, 70 and 90 days gestation exceeds the total serum cortisol concentration. However at 140 and 145 days gestation and 1 day post-partum the total serum cortisol exceeds the Bmax. The highest cortisol:Bmax ratio is seen at 145 days gestation due to the fall of CBG binding capacity at this time.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Blood and urine samples were collected weekly from an Asian elephant (Elephas maximus) for 10 months before conception, throughout pregnancy, and for 10 months after parturition. Additional daily samples were collected for 41 days before through 10 days after parturition to define endocrine events during the peripartum period. During gestation, serum progesterone concentrations increased gradually and, after ~13 weeks, were higher (P < 0.05) than those observed during the nonpregnant luteal phase. Concentrations peaked at ~12 months of gestation, gradually declined during the last month, and then decreased sharply to nondetectable levels 2 days before parturition. A 12 week lactational anestrus was observed before cyclicity resumed. The urinary profile of progestagen excretion paralleled that of circulating progesterone (r = 0.79; P < 0.05); however, radioimmunoassay of HPLC-separated fractions of urinary eluates indicated that this immunoactivity was not associated with native progesterone. After remaining basal through the first 16 weeks of gestation, serum prolactin concentrations increased to 100-fold about midterm and remained elevated until after parturition. Neither serum nor urinary cortisol concentrations were altered during pregnancy, but both increased markedly the day after parturition and remained elevated above prepartum levels for several weeks thereafter. These data indicate that analysis of serum prolactin can confirm pregnancy in the Asian elephant after ~4 months of gestation and that daily monitoring of serum or urinary progestagens is useful for predicting parturition. © 1995 Wiley-Liss, Inc.

The behavior of nine intact group-living adult female rhesus was observed for 30 min daily with each of four adult male rhesus across a verified ovulatory menstrual cycle. Blood samples collected from females daily or on alternate days were analyzed for estradiol, testosterone, and progesterone. Female patterns of approach, follow, and initiate proximity increased several days prior to the estradiol peak, peaked on the day of the estradiol peak, then declined completely or to very low frequencies. Mounts, intromissions, and ejaculations increased significantly on the day of the estradiol peak, remained elevated for 2 more days, then declined completely by the fifth day after peak estradiol. Ejaculations never occurred outside of a 10-day period starting 4 days before the estradiol peak and ending 5 days after the estradiol peak. During this period females initiated over 90% of all approaches. Female hand slap, threaten away, and stand up increased significantly on the first day of increased copulation, remained elevated while copulation was significantly elevated, then decreased along with the decline in copulation. Ten of eleven patterns of female behavior correlated significantly with estradiol level prior to the estradiol peak. All were significantly inversely correlated with progesterone level after the estradiol peak. No pattern of female behavior correlated significantly with testosterone either before or after the estradiol peak. Similarly, male patterns of behavior correlated with female levels of estradiol and progesterone, but not testosterone. These results demonstrate a relationship between increased serum estradiol and increased female initiation of sexual behavior. The finding that some patterns of female behavior increase several days prior to copulation, whereas other behaviors increase coincident with increased copulation suggests that the behavior of group-living rhesus females serves two functions. The first is to communicate sexual interest and the second is to maintain the consort pair and increase the probability that ejaculation will occur. In addition, the strong correlation between preovulatory female behavior and estradiol level suggests that the female's behavior provides precise information about her reproductive state and could thus coordinate copulation with maximal fertility.  相似文献

The urinary excretion pattern of 2-hydroxyestrone, estradiol, estrone, and progesterone was examined in rats during early, mid, and late pregnancy. Progesterone increased from early to mid pregnancy and declined significantly 2 to 3 days prior to parturition, corresponding to changes observed in blood levels by others. 2-Hydroxyestrone, the major estrogen in rat urine, increased significantly 4 days prior to delivery and remained elevated until it further increased sharply the day of parturition. Urinary estradiol and estrone levels showed little change until the day of parturition, when they increased significantly. Multiple correlation analysis of the data implied that 2-hydroxyestrone and estradiol were negatively correlated at the time of implantation. The results suggest that catechol estrogens, through their effect on prostaglandin synthesis, may participate in the process of implantation as well as in the mechanism involved in the onset of labor.  相似文献

Amounts of estradiol, testosterone, and progesterone in plasma were measured during the reproductive cycle of female Raja erinacea. Estradiol titers correlated directly with follicle size in females undergoing ovarian recrudescence, while highest concentrations were found in females with preovulatory follicles. These data indicate that as follicles grow, their steroidogenic capacity increases. In mature, nonspawning females, titers of estradiol and testosterone varied markedly. Progesterone was not detected in peripheral plasma of skates that did not produce eggs during the observation period. In females producing eggs, estradiol and testosterone predominated during the follicular phase of each spawning cycle. While estradiol and testosterone were elevated, progesterone was not detectable in the peripheral circulation. As ovulation and formation of capsules approached, plasma estradiol and testosterone declined to near baseline levels. Circulating progesterone rose sharply two days before encapsulation of ovulated eggs and remained elevated for only two days. On the day of encapsulation, concentrations of plasma progesterone had fallen to nearly baseline levels. Progesterone titers remained low throughout egg retention and oviposition. These measurements demonstrate that progesterone titers are elevated at specific times during the reproductive cycle of the skate and clearly suggest that progesterone is critically involved in events occurring at ovulation, encapsulation, and possibly oviposition.  相似文献

Concentrations of LH/CG, androstenedione and testosterone rose in early pregnancy to maximum values at 6--10 weeks. Thereafter LH/CG levels declined and androstenedione and testosterone levels remained at plateau values or declined until term. Progesterone, oestradiol-17 beta and oestrone increased after ovulation and remained high throughout pregnancy. At 12 weeks, when LH/CG levels were falling, progesterone and oestradiol rose well above the luteal-phase levels which were maintained for the first 12 weeks. Progesterone declined in the 2 weeks before birth, while oestradiol and oestrone remained high. Pregnancies of an unknown stage were dated by reference to a graph of uterine diameter, measured by abdominal palpation, in animals at known times after conception. Measurement of progesterone concentrations during the conception cycle gave more accurate dating and showed that the gestation length was 144 days.  相似文献

In birds, corticosteroid-binding globulin (CBG) binds corticosterone, progesterone and testosterone. The concentration of each ligand can alter the binding of the other ligands through competitive interactions. Thus, an increase in corticosterone or progesterone may displace testosterone bound to CBG, leading to an increase in bioactive free testosterone levels without affecting total testosterone levels in the circulation. Aggressive interactions increase plasma total testosterone levels in some birds but not in others. Here, we tested the hypothesis that aggressive encounters in the late breeding season would not increase total testosterone levels in plasma, but would alter CBG, total corticosterone or total progesterone levels in such a way as to modify the number of available binding sites and therefore occupancy by testosterone. A marked decrease in CBG occupancy by testosterone would indirectly suggest an increase in free testosterone levels in plasma. Wild male white-crowned sparrows were exposed to a simulated territorial intrusion (STI) or control for 30 min. Subjects were then caught and bled. We measured CBG using a ligand-binding assay and corticosterone, progesterone and testosterone using highly sensitive radioimmunoassays. STI significantly increased aggressive behaviors but did not affect plasma total testosterone levels. STI significantly increased plasma CBG and total corticosterone levels and decreased plasma total progesterone levels. We predict that CBG occupancy by corticosterone will increase slightly following an aggressive encounter. However, this small change is unlikely to increase free testosterone levels, because of the large number of seemingly unoccupied CBG binding sites in these subjects.  相似文献

The South American plains vizcacha, Lagostomus maximus, displays an exceptional ovulation rate of up to 800 eggs per cycle, the highest rate recorded for a mammal. Massive polyovulation arises from the overexpression of the apoptosis-inhibiting BCL2 gene leading to a suppression of apoptotic pathways responsible for follicular atresia in mammals. We analyzed the ovarian histology, ovarian apoptosis, and apoptosis-related protein expression with special emphasis in corpora lutea throughout the 5-mo-long gestation period, at parturition day and early postpartum, in L. maximus. Corpora lutea were abundant throughout gestation with no sign of structural regression even at the end of gestation. Both immunohistochemistry and Western blot analysis showed strong signals for apoptosis-inhibiting BCL2 protein, whereas the proapoptotic BAX protein was just detected in isolated luteal cells in gestating females and postpartum females. Apoptosis-associated DNA fragmentation detected by TUNEL was very scarce and occasional and correlated with BAX detection in luteal cells. Marked expression of progesterone and alpha-estrogen receptors in luteal cells was found at early, mid-, and late gestation as well as at parturition day and early postpartum samples. Additionally, serum level of progesterone increased markedly to reach maximal values at late gestation and decreasing at parturition to levels found at early gestation, suggesting that corpora lutea remained functional throughout gestation. These results point out that the unusual ovarian environment of L. maximus in which germ cell demise is abolished through antiapoptotic BCL2 gene overexpression also preserves structural integrity and functionality of corpora lutea during the whole gestation. Overexpression of antiapoptotic BCL2 gene may represent a strategy for an essential need of ovary and corpora lutea in order to maintain pregnancy until term.  相似文献

A Sumatran rhinoceros with a history of early pregnancy loss was supplemented with a synthetic progestin, altrenogest (Regu‐Mate®), and delivered a healthy, full‐term calf 475 days after mating. Serum hormone concentrations were measured throughout gestation, and ultrasonography was used to monitor embryo/fetal growth and viability. The embryonic vesicle growth curve was characterized by three phases: rapid expansion, plateau, and a final rapid expansion, and was similar to that in the domestic horse. Fetal sex was determined by ultrasound on day 73 of gestation. After day 80 of gestation, transabdominal examinations were more useful than rectal examinations for imaging the fetus. Serum progesterone concentrations remained at luteal levels (1.5±0.5 ng/ml) for the first 2 months of pregnancy, and then they gradually increased. However, progesterone decreased almost to luteal levels during the fifth month before it increased again, and eventually reached peak concentrations (13.3±1.9 ng/ml) shortly before parturition. Relaxin concentrations remained basal (≤0.5 ng/ml) for the first half of the pregnancy, increased to 2.7±1.2 ng/ml and stabilized until 2 weeks before parturition, when relaxin spiked to unusually high concentrations (800–1300 ng/ml). Prolactin concentrations were at baseline (7.2±1.7 ng/ml) throughout most of the gestation, but rose markedly 2 weeks before parturition, reaching concentrations as high as 75 ng/ml. Attempts to measure serum estrogen concentrations were unsuccessful. These data represent the first attempt to characterize pregnancy in the critically endangered Sumatran rhinoceros, a species that heretofore had not successfully reproduced in captivity for 112 years. Continuous infusion of bovine GH to hypophysectomized non-pregnant rats increased serum concentrations of pregnancy-associated murine protein-1 (PAMP-1) to the levels of adult female rats and pregnant rats. Serum concentrations of PAMP-1 were followed from Day 16 of gestation until 3 days after parturition in hypophysectomized (on Day 14 of gestation) and intact pregnant rats. In the intact pregnant rat there was a decrease in PAMP-1 values from Day 16 until delivery. The serum concentrations of PAMP-1 in hypophysectomized pregnant rats were similar to those in intact pregnant rats before parturition, but PAMP-1 concentrations decreased markedly after parturition in the hypophysectomized rats. We suggest that the serum concentrations of PAMP-1 can be maintained without pituitary GH in late pregnancy, while serum values of PAMP-1 in non-pregnant rats is dependent upon a continuous secretion of pituitary GH.  相似文献

The possible role of intrauterine estrogen sulfatase and steroid sulfatase around the time of parturition in the guinea pig was investigated. [3H]Estrone sulfate or [3H]pregnenolone sulfate was incubated with intrauterine tissues. Estrogen sulfatase was found in placenta, endometrium, decidua basalis, amnion and chorion. The presence of steroid sulfatase was established in endometrium and decidua basalis but not in placenta or the fetal membranes. Examination of activities in early (days 32-35), mid (days 44-46) and late (within 5 days of parturition) gestation revealed no significant change in estrogen sulfatase specific activity in decidua basalis. However, in chorion and endometrium this activity was seen to increase approx. 12-fold (P less than 0.001) and 2.8-fold (P less than 0.001), respectively, from early to late gestation. In placenta, estrogen sulfatase activity appeared to increase 2.4-fold (P less than 0.001) and in amnion it decreased 2.8-fold (P less than 0.002). Steroid sulfatase activity in decidua basalis did not change during gestation, while activity in endometrium was found to increase by a factor of 5.3 (P less than 0.001), from early to late gestation. The increases, both in estrogen sulfatase activity in chorion, endometrium and placenta and in steroid sulfatase activity in endometrium, occurred primarily within the final 3 weeks of gestation. In contrast, the decrease in estrogen sulfatase activity in amnion occurred principally between the fifth and sixth weeks of gestation. Analysis of radiolabelled metabolites indicated that estradiol and progesterone could be produced via estrogen sulfatase and steroid sulfatase activities in certain tissues. Subcellular fractionation of tissues revealed that the greatest specific activity and total activity, in all cases, was associated with the 105,000 g pellet. Significant activity was also detected in the 750 and 10,000 g pellets but not in the 105,000 g supernatant. Radioimmunoassay of endogenous estradiol-17 beta (estradiol) in chorion extracts revealed a 6.3-fold increase in the hormone from mid to late gestation. Estradiol levels in endometrium and myometrium did not appear to change during this time. It was concluded that increased estrogen sulfatase activity in guinea pig chorion in late gestation occurs along with elevated levels of the hormone estradiol which may be important for parturition in this species.  相似文献

The cDNA-deduced primary structure of rabbit corticosteroid-binding globulin (CBG) contains 383 amino acids (mol wt, 42,326), including three cysteine residues and four sites for N-glycosylation. It is primarily the product of a 1.68-kilobase hepatic mRNA, but small amounts of CBG mRNA were also found in maternal lung, spleen, and ovary and fetal kidney. In the fetus, hepatic CBG mRNA concentrations increase markedly after day 11 and were 2- to 5-fold higher than those in maternal liver during days 17-23. They then declined to very low levels at term (31 days). By contrast, maternal hepatic CBG mRNA levels did not increase until day 23; reached a peak at about day 27, and then declined to prepregnancy values by 3 days after delivery. In general, fetal and maternal hepatic CBG mRNA concentrations reflect the corresponding serum CBG levels. Our data, therefore, indicate that the marked changes in fetal and maternal plasma CBG levels during pregnancy reflect changes in the biosynthesis of the protein rather than alterations in compartmentalization or clearance.  相似文献

Serum samples were collected 1–3 times weekly from two Baird's tapirs (Tapirus bairdii) for 6 months in 1987–1988, and for more than 3 consecutive years beginning in 1989 to characterize hormone patterns during the estrous cycle and pregnancy. Based on serum progesterone concentrations, mean (±SEM) duration of the estrous cycle (n = 20) was 30.8 ± 2.6 days (range, 25–38 days) with a luteal phase length of 18.1 ± 0.4 days (range, 15–20 days). Mean peak serum progesterone concentrations during the luteal phase were 1.35 ± 0.16 ng/ml, and nadir concentrations were 0.19 ± 0.03 ng/ml during the interluteal period. Distinct surges of estradiol preceded luteal phase progesterone increases in most (14/20) cycles. Gestation length was 392 ± 4 days for three complete pregnancies. Mean serum progesterone concentrations increased throughout gestation and were 1.83 ± 0.13, 2.73 ± 0.13, and 4.30 ± 0.16 ng/ml during early, mid- and late gestation, respectively. Serum estradiol concentrations began to rise during mid-gestation, increasing dramatically during the last week of pregnancy. Patterns of serum estriol and estrone secretion during pregnancy were similar to that observed for estradiol. In contrast to progesterone and estrogens, serum cortisol concentrations were unchanged during pregnancy or parturition. Females resumed cycling 16.2 ± 2.0 days after parturition (n = 4) and, on two occasions, females became pregnant during the first postpartum estrus. These data suggest that the tapir cycles at approximately monthly intervals and that increases in serum progesterone are indicative of luteal activity. The interluteal period is relatively long, comprising approximately 40% of the estrous cycle. During gestation, progesterone concentrations are increased above luteal phase levels, and there is evidence of increased estrogen production during late gestation. The absence of increased cortisol secretion at the end of gestation suggests that this steroid does not play a major role in initiating parturition in this species. © 1994 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

Mean (+/- s.d.) pregnancy length for the 14 llamas in this study was 350 +/- 4.5 days. Plasma progesterone concentrations increased by 5 days after mating and remained elevated (greater than 2.0 ng/ml) throughout most of pregnancy. At about 2 weeks before parturition, plasma progesterone concentrations began to decline, dropped markedly during the final 24 h before parturition, and returned to basal concentrations (less than 0.5 ng/ml) by the day of parturition. The combined oestrone + oestradiol-17 beta and oestradiol-17 beta concentrations varied between 6 and 274 pg/ml and 4 and 114 pg/ml, respectively, during the first 9 months of pregnancy. Concentrations increased between 9 months after mating and the end of pregnancy with peak mean concentrations of 827 +/- 58 (s.e.m.) pg oestrone + oestradiol-17 beta/ml (range: 64-1658) and 196 +/- 10 pg oestradiol-17 beta/ml (31-294) during the last week of pregnancy. Concentrations then declined to 87 +/- 14 pg oestrone + oestradiol-17 beta/ml (7-488) and 25 +/- 5 pg oestradiol-17 beta/ml (2.5-142) during the first week post partum. Plasma cortisol concentrations varied between 2.6 and 51.9 ng/ml (14.0 +/- 0.5) from mating until 2 weeks before parturition when the concentrations began to decline. Only a slight increase in plasma cortisol concentrations was observed in association with parturition. Plasma triiodothyronine concentrations varied between 0.5 and 4.5 ng/ml (1.9 +/- 0.1) throughout pregnancy and the periparturient period.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Cholesterol side-chain cleavage (CSCC) and aromatase activities were measured in luteal mitochondria and tissue pieces, respectively, from rhesus monkeys on days 22, 49, 128 and 160 of gestation. CSCC activity did not vary significantly during gestation and thus probably does not respond to chorionic gonadotropin which is elevated on day 22 of pregnancy. It is not known, however, whether CSCC can be stimulated prior to day 22 when the corpus luteum is steroidogenically more active. Both 3H-pregnenolone and 3H-progesterone were synthesized from [1,2-3/]cholesterol. Aromatase activity declined from high levels on days 22 and 49 to a nadir on day 128 of pregnancy. Utilizing either [1beta-3H]androstenedione or [1beta-3H]testosterone as substrate yielded comparable results throughout gestation.  相似文献

To increase our understanding of the endocrine changes associated with parturition in dogs, plasma concentrations of progesterone (P4), 15-ketodihydroprostaglandin F(2alpha) (PGFM), estradiol-17-beta (E2beta), cortisol, ACTH, prolactin (PRL), LH, and FSH were measured in six spontaneously whelping bitches and in six bitches in which parturition was induced with the progesterone-receptor blocker aglépristone on day 58 of pregnancy. Expulsion of pups in the induced group took place in the presence of P4 concentrations that were still elevated. PGFM concentrations increased before parturition in both groups, but levels were lower in the induced bitches. PGFM levels reached a maximum in both groups during parturition and quickly decreased in the spontaneously whelping group after parturition, but remained elevated in the induced group. In both groups, cortisol concentrations reached similar maximum levels during the last 30 h before the onset of expulsion. During the 3 days postpartum, cortisol concentrations were higher in the induced group. The highly variable ACTH concentrations did not differ significantly throughout the study within or between groups. In both groups, E2beta concentrations decreased and PRL concentrations increased between the late gestational period and the 30-h period before parturition. Concentrations of both LH (spontaneously whelping group) and FSH (both groups) decreased between late gestation and the postpartum period. The results of this study illustrate the hormonal changes around parturition in the bitch, and reveal that aglépristone-induced parturition is associated with still incomplete luteolysis, an altered PGFM profile, and elevated postpartum cortisol concentrations as compared with spontaneously whelping dogs.  相似文献

Plasma levels of estrone sulfate, estrone and estradiol, and progesterone were measured in six ewes throughout pregnancy. Estrone sulfate was detectable at around 70 days of gestation with values ranging between 0.3 – 0.7 pmol (0.1 – 0.3 ng) per ml. The level increased steadily to between 3 – 24 pmol (1 – 9 ng) per ml at about 2 days before lambing. An upsurge then followed reaching a maximal concentration between 40 – 130 pmol (15 – 50 ng) per ml. Unconjugated estrone and estradiol levels were appreciable only in the last 2–3 days of pregnancy and the profiles at this time followed closely that of estrone sulfate so that the molar ratio of estrone sulfate: estrone: estradiol remained remarkably constant at approximately 100:2:1 in spite of the great individual variations in absolute concentrations. The progesterone level was higher than that of estrone sulfate throughout pregnancy except 1–2 days prior to parturition. The sharp decline in progesterone concentration in the last two days coincided with the upsurge of estrone sulfate, but the net decrease in concentration was only about one-third of the net increase in estrone sulfate concentration during this period. These data are discussed in relation to the possible role of estrone sulfate and the possibility of placental conversion of progesterone to estrone sulfate during late pregnancy in the ewe.  相似文献

The annual reproductive cycle of the male little brown bat, in contrast to seasonal reproductive patterns of other mammals, is differentiated by an asynchronous recrudescence of the testis and the accessory reproductive glands. Spermatogenesis occurs during the summer, whereas fully stimulated accessory organs, stored epididymal spermatozoa, and sexual behavior are expressed later during a mating period that extends, albeit interrupted by hibernation, from late summer until early spring. To investigate whether changes in high affinity androgen-binding activity in the circulation are related to the delayed renewal of the accessory organs, plasma sex steroid-binding protein (SBP) and total testosterone (T) levels were measured throughout the year. From these data and determinations of association constants for T binding to SBP and albumin at both hibernating (4 degrees C) and active (40 degrees C) temperatures, estimates of the unbound ("free") and albumin-bound T fractions were made and correlated with changes in the accessory reproductive organs. Plasma SBP concentrations (mean +/- SEM) exhibited wide seasonal fluctuations: they were baseline in May (10 +/- 2 nM) following spring arousal, increased dramatically in June (184 +/- 24 nM), and reached peak levels in early July (262 +/- 29 nM), where they remained until August. In late August they began to fall (104 +/- 23 nM) and then returned to baseline during the hibernation period (October-April). Although total T levels were also elevated in June, it appeared that the unbound ("free") and the unbound plus albumin-bound T fractions did not increase until late July. Since the accessory gland weights did not begin to increase until late July as well, it was concluded that increases in the unbound and albumin-bound T fractions may be an important factor in the recrudescence of the accessories and that increased SBP activity in early summer may play a role in the regression and delayed renewal of these organs. However, what factor(s) maintain the accessory glands, epididymal spermatozoa, and sexual behavior during the breeding and hibernation periods when all T fractions were low are, as yet, undetermined.  相似文献

Consistent, individual differences in the expression of maternal behaviour have been described in several species including the sheep. The neuroendocrine mechanisms underlying the onset of maternal behaviour in the sheep have been described, although the relationship between hormonal events and individual differences in behaviour has yet to be determined. In this study, we examined whether the individual differences in plasma estradiol, progesterone, oxytocin and cortisol concentrations were related to observed individual and breed differences in maternal behaviours in two breeds of sheep (Scottish Blackface and Suffolk) known to differ in maternal behavioural expression. Maternal estradiol concentration increased rapidly before parturition and was higher in Blackface ewes than Suffolk ewes. Plasma progesterone declined before parturition and was higher in Suffolk than Blackface ewes. Prepartum estradiol, but not progesterone, was related to individual differences in maternal grooming of the lamb. Plasma oxytocin did not differ between breeds in late gestation. There was a tendency for oxytocin to be higher in Blackface than Suffolk ewes immediately after birth. However, there were no significant relationships between prepartum or postpartum oxytocin and any maternal behaviours. Plasma cortisol was higher in Blackface than Suffolk ewes in the last days of pregnancy but rose in both breeds over the last 24 h before parturition and did not differ at delivery. Cortisol peripartum was negatively related to individual differences in maternal affiliative behaviours. These data suggest that estradiol, and potentially cortisol, may mediate individual differences in maternal behaviour in sheep.  相似文献

Male birdsong is a sexually dimorphic behavior characterized by learned dialects. In a combined study of learning in relation to steroid levels in the plasma, changes in estradiol and testosterone levels were correlated with the timing of the sensitive period for song acquisition and with successive stages in song development. Male swamp sparrows were trained with a changing series of live singing tutors from 26 days to 1 year of age. Song acquisition was concentrated between 26 and 47 days of age (57%). By 85 days of age 71% of acquisition was completed; some occurred as late as 300 days. There were two major periods when testosterone levels were elevated. The first, from 30-80 days, encompassed most of the period of song acquisition. The second, from 260 to at least 360 days of age, coincided with song development. Estradiol levels were elevated from 18 to 170 days of age, encompassing almost all of the period of song acquisition. A marked estradiol peak between 40 and 50 days coincided with a trough in testosterone levels and a hiatus in song acquisition. The strong correlation between the second period of elevated testosterone and song motor development suggests a causal connection, with levels peaking in mid-development and declining during mature song production. Estradiol levels were elevated at the start of the study and remained so during early subsong production, from 30 to 165 days. They then fell to baseline, remaining there throughout the resumption of subsong and plastic song production at 250-326 days. Both estradiol and testosterone are candidates for possibly affecting song acquisition.  相似文献
