The population of lungfish (Protopterus aethiopicus (Heckel)) was sampled by bottom trawling for 12 months from June 1984 to May 1985. A total of 576 lungfish were investigated. The sex ratio in the population was 1 male : 1 -98 females. Average size at maturity was found to be 960cm total length (TL) but the smallest matured male measured 72-9 cm and the female 840 cm TL. It was not possible to establish spawning times and reproductive activity trends either from the variation in relative condition factor ‘kn’ or from gonadosomatic index (GSI). Whereas male lungfish seem to show no further increase in GSI after gonadal maturity stage III, females exhibit GSI values that vary directly with oocyte maturation and ovarian weights. Fat deposited along the gonads was found to be a better basis for assessing maturation and spawning in lungfish. The potential spawning period was found to be from September to May. Absence of lungfish with spent gonads over the 12-month period and the presence of different egg sizes in ovaries, suggest that the fish is a multiple spawner. Fecundity was found to range from 705 eggs (in 84-cm TL fish) to 14,922 eggs (in 130-cm TL Fish).  相似文献

Fecundity of perch estimated from a regression of egg. number on fish length varied from 6711 for a fish of 14.5 cm to 77978 for a female of 34. 5 cm. Other independent variables related to egg number were age, gonad weight and somatic weight. Mean egg diameter varied from 0.94 to 1.62 mm. Males matured in their second year at a length of 6 cm and above while all females spawned at age four at a length of 15–18 cm. A proportion of females at Davan spawned one year earlier than at Kinord and were also slightly smaller on spawning. Faster growth of Davan fish may have encouraged earlier maturation. Spawning behaviour is described from film material.  相似文献

An account is given of certain aspects of the biology of the garfish, Belone belone , captured by sea anglers from Courtmacsherry Bay, Co. Cork. Fish were aged by otoliths, and found to grow most rapidly in their first 2 years, females attaining a greater mean size than males. Most of the fish caught had already spawned. From examination of their gonads and lengths of juveniles collected in the neuston, spawning would appear to take place there mostly in the month of June.  相似文献

Reproductive cycle, frequency and duration of spawning, energetic content of gonads, and reproductive output of the common green sea urchin Loxechinus albus were analyzed in the Beagle Channel (Tierra del Fuego) between May 2004 and May 2005. Gonad indices (GI, percentages of gonad mass in total body mass) were significantly higher in March, April, July, and August than in November and May, thus showing a negative correlation with the photoperiod. Highest GI values of mature individuals were observed in August, and spawning occurred from September to December. In females, the mass-specific energy content of gonads (ECG) was highest in spawned gonads and lowest in mature ones, while in males ECG values were higher in immature stage and lower in premature and mature stages. High ECG values can be explained by the abundance of nutritive phagocytes. Both ECG and total gonad energy content (TECG) were higher in females than in males. Mean reproductive output was 7.28% for females and 6.15% for males (expressed as the difference between mean GI of mature and spawned gonads) and 25.02 kJ for females and 19.26 kJ for males (expressed as the difference between mean TECG of mature and spawned gonads).  相似文献

The behaviour of the lesser sandeel, Ammodytes marinus (Raitt), has been investigated at 5, 10 and 15° C, using a photographic method of recording activity. The activity patterns at 10 and 15° C were very similar, there being a high level of swimming activity during the light period, which fell to a low level at 5° C. It was also lower at 10° C at the end of the experiment than at the beginning and it is suggested that this might have been due to an increase in the fat contents of the fish. The feeding rate of the fish was measured and showed a Q 10 of 2.08 for the temperature range 5–15° C. The annual cycle of activity of A. marinus is discussed in relation to seasonal changes in food availability, light and temperature, and in the fat content of the fish. It is concluded that after spawning in the December–January period the fish remain buried in the sand until April, because of the limiting effect on swimming and feeding activity of the environmental factors in the intervening period. The proportion of fish available for capture at the start of the fishery in April is related mainly to temperature, but food (as measured by numbers of copepods) light intensity and photoperiod are by then increasing rapidly. After July the fishery ceases and it is thought that this is because the fish have entered an overwintering stage, during which they remain buried in the sand. This phase is also thought to be associated with the maturation of the gonads in readiness for the winter spawning. The factors causing the fish to enter this stage are as yet undetermined but may be related to the attainment of a certain level of fat content.  相似文献

The demographics of the southern bluefin tuna (SBT) Thunnus maccoyii spawning stock were examined through a large-scale monitoring program of the Indonesian longline catch on the spawning ground between 1995 and 2012. The size and age structure of the spawning population has undergone significant changes since monitoring began. There has been a reduction in the relative abundance of larger/older SBT in the catch since the early 2000s, and a corresponding decrease in mean length and age, but there was no evidence of a significant truncation of the age distribution. Pulses of young SBT appear in the catches in the early- and mid-2000s and may be the first evidence of increased recruitment into the spawning stock since 1995. Fish in these two recruitment pulses were spawned around 1991 and 1997. Size-related variations in sex ratio were also observed with female bias for fish less than 170 cm FL and male bias for fish greater than 170 cm FL. This trend of increasing proportion of males with size above 170 cm FL is likely to be related to sexual dimorphism in growth rates as male length-at-age is greater than that for females after age 10 years. Mean length-at-age of fish aged 8–10 years was greater for both males and females on the spawning ground than off the spawning ground, suggesting that size may be the dominant factor determining timing of maturation in SBT. In addition to these direct results, the data and samples from this program have been central to the assessment and management of this internationally harvested stock.  相似文献

A study has been made of the effect of photoperiodism on the ovarian maturation of fresh water teleost, Mystus tengara (Ham.). The magnitude of ovarian recrudescence is more during maturing virgin phase as compared to during immature virgin and preparatory virgin phases in long photoperiod (14 hours/day) treated fish. Thus, the response of the ovary to long photoperiod increases with the approach of natural spawning period. The mature eggs are more in long photoperiod treated fish than in controls exposed to 12 hours/day photoperiod. In long photoperiod treated fish, prespawning period is reduced considerably. During spawning and post-spawning periods, the ovaries are refractory, since long photoperiod is ineffective in maintaining gravid ovaries beyond spawning period and the ovarian regression during post spawning period sets in regardless of nature of photoperiod treatment.  相似文献

Endocrine and environmental factors control reproduction of the polynoid scale worm Harmothoe imbricata. We confirmed that the rate of vitellogenesis was greater in winter specimens transferred from ambient regimes of photoperiod and temperature to a light:dark (LD) photoperiod of 16:8 at 10 degrees C and showed that the number of females spawning was significantly greater than for those transferred to LD8:16 at 10 degrees C. The endocrine mediation of this response was investigated using prostomium implantations. Significantly more LD8:16 females implanted with prostomia from LD16:8 conditioned females spawned than LD8:16 females implanted with LD8:16 prostomia. Females without prostomia failed to spawn. LD16:8 exposure may increase levels of a possible "spawning hormone" in the prostomium. Spawning proceeded in these LD16:8 females and allowed spawning to occur in LD8:16 females implanted with LD16:8 prostomia. In LD8:16 prostomia, titers of the spawning hormone reached the threshold in significantly fewer individuals, so that significantly fewer females implanted with LD8:16 prostomia spawned. Using Y-maze choice chambers, pair formation was shown to be under pheromonal control, with males being attracted to mature females but not to females carrying fertilized oocytes or to LD8:16 conditioned females. Production of this attraction pheromone can, therefore, be manipulated through photoperiodic control, suggesting a link between oogenesis, spawning, and pheromone production.  相似文献

The reproduction of any fish species may be influenced by environmental factors, knowledge of which is required for an adequate control of the reproductive process to improve culture practices. Thus, the reproduction of a wild population of bullseye puffer, Sphoeroides annulatus (Jenyns, 1842), and the influence of temperature, photoperiod, lunar cycle and tide level were analyzed. Ovarian ripeness is asynchronous, and the ovary may ripen again at least once following spawning. Testes also display an asynchronous ripeness, but once sexual maturity is attained, spermatozoa are continually produced and released. The reproduction is highly seasonal, with an intense spawning period during the spring‐summer, when the sea surface temperature is 22.5–30.9°C and a 11–14 h photoperiod. The observations suggest that the timing of spawning is synchronized by a semi‐lunar cycle together with the rise of the average tide level. Size at first maturation was similar for females (28.2 cm TL) and males (28.6 cm TL). However, some specimens may start their gonad maturation when are as small as 19 cm TL.  相似文献

Synopsis The reproductive biology of the coral reef butterflyfish,Chaetodon multicinctus, was investigated by histological examination of gonads sampled over an 18 month period from a shallow inshore population on Oahu, Hawaii. Most gonads developed directly from previously undifferentiated tissue. Ovarian development (the structural formation of lamellae and primary oocytes) was observed in fish ≥44 mm and testicular development (the formation of spermatogenic crypts) in fish ≥62 mm standard length (SL). In addition, testis formation was identified within the ovarian lamellae of several differentiated but immature fish. It is hypothesized that prematurational sex change may facilitate monogamy within the highly competitive social structure of this site attached species. Oocyte development in mature females was marked by distinct phases of primary growth, the formation of yolk vesicles, and vitellogenesis. Spawning activity was histologically identified by the maturation and hydration of fully yolked oocytes, and presence of postovulatory follicles. Recently spawned females from field collections and experimental gonadotropin-treatments exhibited postovulatory follicles that were estimated to persist at least 24 h after ovulation. Atresia of yolked oocytes was classified into four stages of cell degeneration and resorption. Monthly analyses of oocyte development and atresia within the sample population show thatC. multicinctus has a protracted annual spawning season with a major peak during the early spring and evidence of spawning activity among some individuals in the fall. Histological analyses of spawning activity provide more accurate and unambiguous information than do traditional gonadosomatic assays in this and probably other coral reef fishes.  相似文献

The ecology of the freshwater fish Cichla monoculus Spix et Agassiz, 1831 (Osteichthyes: Cichlidae) was investigated in the Campo Grande Reservoir, Northeast Brazil. Rainfall, temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen and electrical conductivity of the water were recorded monthly. Fish collected on a monthly basis were measured, weighed, dissected, sexed and the stages of maturation of the gonads were assessed by macro and microscopic means. The semi-arid study region had short spells of rain interspaced with dry seasons. A positive correlation was observed between rainfall and air and water temperatures and electrical conductivity of the water. The study population had an extended spawning season, with peak of reproductive activity coinciding with low water temperatures. Males were longer and heavier than females on an average and were larger at onset of sexual maturity. The size frequency distributions of the oocytes indicate that C. monoculus is a multiple spawner with an estimated batch fecundity of 3100. Condition factor showed an inverse relationship with gonad size during maturation in both sexes and spent fish were in poor condition. In mature males, lipid stores in the post-occipital cephalic protuberance, a secondary sexual characteristic developed during the reproductive phase, were depleted in spent individuals. The success of this fish is attributed to its reproductive capacity and to the phenotypic plasticity that allows it to adapt to the harsh ecological conditions that prevail in the semi-arid region of Northeast Brazil.  相似文献

The timing of sex determination and the pattern of sex differentiation have not been studied in fathead minnow even though this species of fish are commonly used as a research model for toxicological studies. In this study, the developmental histology of gonadal development was investigated. Fish were cultured in the laboratory conditions and spawning obtained at a photoperiod of 16 h-light and 8 h-dark. Samples were collected from day 7 fish post-spawning (day 7 fps) to day 150 fps and their gonads were processed for histological examination. Developmental histology was assessed by using a light microscopy. The results showed that ovarian differentiation normally occurs at around day 13 fps, while testicular differentiation normally occurs at around day 22 fps.  相似文献

Atlantic cod Gadus morhua were collected from Smith Sound, Newfoundland in January 1999. Visual examination of females (n=150) and males (n=126) revealed that some large fish (42–79 cm) had underdeveloped gonads. Histological examination of underdeveloped ovaries indicated that the majority of these females were undergoing mass resorption of oocytes and would not have spawned in 1999. Fish in this condition included females that were aborting their first attempt at maturation and females that had spawned the previous year but were failing to re-ripen. Somatic and liver condition were significantly lower (P<0·05) for fish undergoing mass oocyte resorption than ripening females, suggesting that the interruption in the maturation cycle may have been related to insufficient nutrient storage. In males, testes of some adult fish were considered to be non-reproductive as they showed no signs of ripening and probably would not have spawned in 1999. Liver condition was significantly higher (P<0·05) for non-reproductive males than those that were ripening. Disruptions in male and female reproductive cycles may also have been related to water temperatures that were too cold (0–0·5° C) for successful gamete development. Immature gametes (perinucleolar oocytes in females; spermatogonia in males) showed no signs of breakdown in non-reproductive individuals, suggesting that they retained the potential to develop and spawn gametes in 2000.  相似文献

Pacific sand lance Ammodytes hexapterus in Kachemak Bay, Alaska, showed no sexual dimorphism in length-to-weight (gonad-free) ratio or length-at-age relationship. Most matured in their second year, males earlier in the season than females, but females (31%) attained a higher gonadosomatic index than males (21%). Sand lance spawned intertidally once each year in late September and October on fine gravel or sandy beaches soon after the seasonal peak in water temperatures. Sand lance in Cook Inlet and Prince William Sound displayed similar maturation schedules. Schools were dominated 2: 1 by males as they approached the intertidal zone at a site where spawning has taken place for decades. Sand lance spawned vigorously in dense formations, leaving scoured pits in beach sediments. Fecundity of females (93–199 mm) was proportional to length, ranging from 1468 to 16 081 ova per female. About half of the overall spawning school fecundity was derived from age group 1 females (55% of the school by number). Spawned eggs were 1·02 mm in diameter, demersal, slightly adhesive, and deposited in the intertidal just below the waterline. Sand lance embryos developed over 67 days through periods of intertidal exposure and sub-freezing air temperatures.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to assess fluctuations in daily water temperature in Chascomús Lagoon during one year, and to evaluate whether the highest temperature recorded during pejerrey spawning season can produce an endocrine disruption on brain-pituitary-gonads axis. Fish were subjected to daily temperature fluctuations: 17 °C to 19 °C (reproductive control), 19 °C to 25 °C, and 19 °C to 27 °C. After 8 days, ten fish per treatment were sacrificed and gene expression of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH-I, GnRH-II, GnRH-III), gonadotropin subunits-β (FSH-β, LH-β), glycoprotein hormone-α (GPH-α), gonadotropin receptors (FSH-R, LH-R), and gonadal aromatase (cyp19a1a) was analyzed. Also, plasma levels of sexual steroids and gonadal reproductive status were studied. Fish exposed to high temperature fluctuations quit spawning, presenting clear signs of gonadal regression. Fish recovered its spawning activity 11 weeks after heat treatment. At endocrine level, GnRH-I and FSH-β in both sexes, LH-β and GPH-α in males and FSH-R, LH-R and cyp19a1a in females decreased significantly in treated fish. Also, a strong reduction in plasma sex steroid levels was found for both sexes. This study demonstrated that pulses of warm water in natural environment during pejerrey spawning season can disrupt all levels of the reproductive axis, impairing reproduction.  相似文献

We used spawning, external appearance of the females and in part histology of gonads of the African mormyrid fish Mormyrus rume proboscirostris to evaluate the reaction of the fish to experimental variation of environmental factors. Conductivity changes are sufficient to induce gonadal maturation (decrease of conductivity) and regression (increase of conductivity), respectively. Increase of water level and simulation of rain at constant conductivity values did not induce gonadal maturation and spawning. Neither males nor females of M. rume proboscirostris showed postbreeding refractoriness. Social stress apparently prevented complete gonadal maturation and successful spawning. The females laid on average 364 eggs per fractional spawning; the spawning intervals were 21 days. Hatching rate amounted to about 40% in all experiments taken together.  相似文献

The annual reproductive cycle of the top shell Turbo cornutus from Jeju Island was investigated in two populations using histology. In the northern population, gametogenesis commenced in January as the surface water temperature reached 14?°C, while in the southern population gametogenesis began a month earlier, as the water temperature remained at 17?°C. Ripe top shells first appeared in June and spawning continued from June to October when water temperatures were between 20 and 24?°C. Histology indicated that the spawning period of the southern population was a month earlier and lasted longer (June–October) than in the northern population (July–September). The percentage gonad area of animals in the southern population in March and April was significantly higher than in the northern population (p?相似文献

Synopsis The reproductive biology of eastern sea garfish Hyporhamphus australis, eastern river garfish H. regularis ardelio, and snub-nosed garfish Arrhamphus sclerolepis were described throughout their respective ranges in the coastal waters of New South Wales (NSW), Australia. Peaks in gonadosomatic indices indicated that spawning of eastern sea garfish occurred in late spring and early summer (November–December) on the south coast of NSW, and in winter and early spring (June–September) on the north coast. Eastern river garfish spawned between July and December in NSW estuaries and snub-nosed garfish spawned between October and January in the Clarence River. The sex ratios in commercial catches of eastern sea garfish from the north coast of NSW were biased toward male fish, but approached equality for fish caught from the south coast. Sex ratios were significantly biased toward female snub-nosed garfish, and female eastern river garfish from all estuaries sampled. Mean (±SE) batch fecundity was 1498 ± 110 (range: 98 – 3449) ripe oocytes per female for eastern sea garfish, 917 ± 36 (range: 102 – 2268) ripe oocytes per female for eastern river garfish, and 716 ± 104 (range: 20 – 2956) ripe oocytes per female for snub-nosed garfish across the range of mature sizes examined. There was a linear relationship between batch fecundity and fish size for all three species of garfish. Eastern sea garfish approached 50% maturity at a larger size than snub-nosed, or eastern river garfish. Size at 50% maturity was similar for male and female eastern river and snub-nosed garfish, but male eastern sea garfish matured at a significantly smaller size than females. All three species appear capable of spawning in the spawning season immediately following the one in which they were born. Mature female fish of all three species had distributions of oocyte diameters consisting of three or four modes, which strongly suggests asynchronous oocyte development and a multiple spawning strategy during the spawning season. Implications for the management of garfish fisheries in NSW are also discussed.  相似文献

Silver pomfret, Pampus argenteus, were collected by fishing with drift gillnets on one spawning ground in Kuwait waters during 1998–2000. Fish size frequency, sex ratio, maturation cycle, spawning frequency, fecundity and egg weight were assessed. The length–weight relationship differed between sexes whereby females were significantly bigger than males. Spawning started in mid‐May and continued until early October. During this time the water temperature ranged from 26.0 to 32.8°C, salinity was ? 39.0‰ and water depth ranged between 5 and 12 m. Large females spawned earlier than young spawners and the overall percentage of males during the spawning period was 70.3%. Spawning occurred after 13.00 h, with peak spawning between 15.00 and 18.00 hours during outgoing tide. Mean daily spawning frequency amounted to 63.2%. Spawning activity was found to be associated with the lunar cycle and spawnings were concentrated during the first and third quarters of the moon period, indicating a semilunar reproduction cycle. It was concluded that a female would spawn at least six times during the season. No change was observed in relative fecundity during the peak spawning season (June–August). Average relative batch fecundity was 176.3 eggs g?1 somatic weight (SW), corresponding to a relative total fecundity of 1058 eggs g?1 SW, which is 1.5 times higher than estimates obtained from counting the standing stock of oocytes. Bigger fish produced heavier eggs and the egg weight decreased as the spawning season progressed. Based on gonadal cycles, oocyte size frequency distribution and total fecundity, we concluded that silver pomfret is a multiple batch spawner with indeterminate fecundity.  相似文献
