The reproductive activities of the silver pomfret, Pampus argenteus (Euphrasen), in Kuwait waters were investigated from March 1996 to February 1998. Observations on the seasonal distribution of maturity stages and variations in seasonal fluctuations in the gonadosomatic index (GSI) confirmed recent findings that the spawning period begins in May. The species has a prolonged spawning period in the females extending from May to August, whereas the males mature in April and ripe specimens were encountered in monthly samples until September. The recruitment pattern confirmed the one breeding season. There are two spawning peaks, the first in May and the second in August. Variations in GSI relative to fish length indicated that females and males are most fecund at about 24.5–26.4 cm and 20.5–22.4 cm length classes, respectively. The males mature earlier than females, at a minimum size of 12.5–14.4 cm, while the females mature at 20.5–22.4 cm. The oocyte diameter‐frequency distribution suggests a serial rhythm of spawning. Fecundity ranged from 28 965 to 455 661 and correlated positively with: (a) standard length (P < 0.006); (b) ovary weight (P < 0.001); and (c) body weight (P < 0.001), and negatively with egg size (P < 0.003).  相似文献

Ovaries of 1159 Trachinocephalus myops were examined, and six oocyte stages were histologically identified whereby each stage of ovary development was observed almost every month. The sex ratio was not different from 1 : 1 (P > 0.01). The weight‐length relationship was estimated as BW = 0.0077FL3.1207 (r2 = 0.976, n = 2256). Monthly composition of the oocyte stages gonadosomatic index (GSI), and condition factor (CF) were examined. The spawning season had two peaks: February to April and August to October. Sizes at 50% maturity were estimated at 18.0 and 18.7 cm FL for females and males, respectively. Fecundity estimates ranged from 11 100 to 426 200 (mean: 178 600), based on an oocyte diameter >0.2 mm. Batch fecundity was estimated to range from 1724 to 120 951 (mean: 60 200), germinal vesicle migration and mature oocytes >0.8 mm in diameter were counted, and the relative fecundity was estimated to range from 346 to 3115 (mean: 1087). The results suggest that reproductive activity occurred throughout the year, suitable for the highly variable environments utilized by this species.  相似文献

The length‐weight relationships, spawning season, sex ratio, size at first maturity and fecundity of Botia dario (Hamilton, 1822), also known as the Bengal loach, were analyzed based on 556 specimens collected from the wetlands of Majuli Island, Assam between June 2012 and May 2013. The sex ratio (M : F) was 1 : 0.68, differing significantly (P < 0.05) from a 1 : 1 ratio. Size at first maturity (Lm50) was estimated as 6.8 cm for males and 7.4 cm for females. Analysis of monthly variations in the gonado‐somatic index (GSI), the monthly proportions of macroscopic gonadal maturity, and the ova diameter suggest a prolonged spawning season of B. dario from May to August, with a peak in July for both males and females (GSI = 15.0 in females; 7.0 in males). Absolute fecundity varied from 2523 to 51 377, with a mean of 18 367 ± 1254 oocytes per ovary. A positive correlation was recorded between total fecundity and body weight (r2 = 0.678).  相似文献

The present study investigated the reproductive biology and histological study of gonads of Schizothorax plagiostomus female and its relationship with gonadosomatic index. The study period was from July, 2013 to June, 2014. Fish samples within the range of 25.5 cm to 40.33 cm in total length and weight ranging from 250 g to 580 g were used during the study. The mean GSI value of female fish fluctuated between minimum 1.059 ± 0.62 in August to maximum 14.95 ± 2.69 in May. The results showed that S. plagiostomus breeds during May, June and July confirmed by the gonadosomatic index and egg diameter measurements. The ova diameter ranged from 0.3 to 2.02 mm with minimum in July and maximum in June. The breeding status confirmed by gonadosomatic index (GSI) and ovarian histology showed six stages of ovarian maturation (viz. stage I: chromatin nucleaolar stage; II: perinucleolar stage; III: cortical alveolar stage; IV: vitellogenic yolk stage; V: ripe mature stage; and VI: atretic stage). Results show that S. plagiostomus is a seasonal breeder with unimodal spawning activity.  相似文献

The gobioid fish Apocryptes bato (Hamilton, 1822) is a species of mudskipper found in Bangladesh, India, and Myanmar. The reproductive biology of A. bato including sex ratio, size at sexual maturity, breeding season, fecundity, and condition factor was studied in the Payra River, southern Bangladesh during May 2016 to April 2017. A total of 1,028 specimens (303 males and 725 females) were collected. The overall sex ratio was significantly different from the expected value of 1:1 (male: female = 1:2.39, χ2 = 173.23, p < 0.05). Size at sexual maturity was estimated as 4.9 cm standard length. Monthly variations in gonadosomatic index indicate that the main breeding season is from May to December. There was a significant positive correlation of body length and body weight with fecundity. Fulton's condition factor varied in both sexes and was attributed to variations in GSI with maturity. Breeding season was significantly associated with rainfall, but not air temperature. Our findings should improve management and conservation of this fish in the Payra River and surrounding ecosystems.  相似文献

The study provides new information on the reproductive biology of Hypselobarbus thomassi (Day, 1874) an endemic cyprinid fish in the Western Ghats–a biodiversity hotspot of India. A total of 384 specimens (males = 244 and females = 140) were collected monthly from April 2009 to March 2011 from Kallada River of Southern part of Western Ghats, India. Monthly sex ratio indicated that males predominated in the fishery, and an overall sex ratio was significantly different from the expected value of 1:1 (male:female = 1:0.57, x2 = 28.17, p < .01). Based on the monthly analysis of gonadosomatic index (GSI) and the proportion of mature individuals, the spawning season of H. thomassi occurred between May to October with a peak in June to August. The length at first maturity (L50) recorded was 290 mm TL in males and 330 mm TL in females. The absolute fecundity ranged between 305 (234 mm TL) to 1,089 (414 mm TL) and relative fecundity oscillated between 77.3–220.69 oocytes/g of fish. The fecundity established a linear relationship with total length, body weight and ovary weight. The findings of this study would be very effective to impose sustainable conservation plan for this threatened species in Kallada River and other Western Ghats river systems.  相似文献

The morphology of vitellogenic oocytes and the batch fecundity of five tropical forage species belonging to the family Characidae, were studied in 104 late‐maturing ovaries. Significant morphological differences between vitellogenic oocytes and ovarian follicles were found. The lowest batch fecundity values were recorded in Hemigrammus marginatus (480 ± 163) and Orthospinus franciscensis (1701 ± 562), which were the smaller species in terms of total length, body weight and oocyte diameter. The highest batch fecundity value was observed in Tetragonopterus chalceus (8384 ± 3944) having the highest GSI and oocyte diameter. Batch fecundity and gonad weight was highly correlated followed by body weight and total length. Relative fecundity was estimated per unit total length, body weight and gonad weight. The wide variation in fecundity observed between the specimens and the species analysed is possibly related to the multiple spawning reproductive strategy of these fishes. Since T. chalceus have higher values of batch and relative fecundity, it is concluded that this species has a higher reproductive potential than the other forage species studied.  相似文献

The present study investigated the spawning behaviour of the spiny eel, Macrognathus pancalus, and its relationship with the environment (photoperiod and temperature). The results show that M. pancalus breeds during February to September with peak spawning during February/March and July/August, indicating two main breeding periods. Initiation of breeding occurs during increasing day lengths in early spring (February/March), and regression during decreasing day lengths in autumn (September/October). The breeding status confirmed by gonadosomatic index (GSI) and ovarian histology showed six stages of ovarian maturation (viz. stage I: chromatin nucleaolar; II: perinucleolar; III: cortical alveolar; IV: vitellogenesis; V: ripe; and VI: partially spent), with predominance of one or more stages at a particular time of the year. Males also followed a similar seasonal pattern in gonadal maturation as reflected by their GSI. Results show that M. pancalus is a seasonal breeder with bimodal spawning activity. The breeding pattern suggests an influence of prevailing day length conditions at this latitude.  相似文献

The reproductive pattern of longnose trevally (Carangoides chrysophrys) in the Arabian Sea, off the coast of Oman, is described. Samples were collected on a monthly base between April 2005 and September 2006 from two landing sites (ALlakbi and Raysuot). A single peak of the gonadosomatic index (GSI) started from September and ended in February signalling the spawning period. Values of the relative condition factor (K n ) were fairly constant throughout the year for both males and females and no significantly difference was found in the average K n values between males and females during sampling period. Male and female lengths-at 50% maturity were 46.90 and 42.08 cm, respectively and were significantly different. This study thus increases our understanding of the reproductive biology of an important commercial and artisanal fish species in one of its major distribution areas.  相似文献

In this paper, the examination of some reproductive features and stomach contents of yellowfin tuna, Thunnus albacares, were determined by samples taken from Iranian drifting gillnets in the Oman Sea in the years 2007 to 2009. The male to female ratio in overall size was 1 : 0.93, which was not significantly different from the expected value 1 : 1. Fish lengths ranged from 37 to 152 cm, averaging 78.5 cm for females and 79.2 cm for males. At a larger size (>117 cm) males were proportionally predominant. Length at first maturity, Lm 50%, was observed when females reached 77.2 cm. Data from maturity stages indicated a single spawning period, peaking in May‐June, corresponding with a drop in the Gonadosomatic Index (GSI). Fishes were the main prey group, comprising 47.6% of total numbers among the three food item categories in the tuna stomachs. Among the 12 families identified in the stomachs, the Portunidae swimming crab crustacean was the most important prey organism (18.7% of total numbers). A wide range of prey species found in yellowfin tuna stomachs reflects an opportunistic feeding behaviour restricted by local prey availability. Considering the scarcity of available data, the results of the present paper will provide a reference for better knowledge of the biological features of Talbacares in the Oman Sea.  相似文献

The reproductive biology of Caranx rhonchus (Geoffroy Saint‐Hilaire, 1817) (Pisces, Carangidae) was studied in the Gulf of Gabès (Mediterranean Sea) from June 2004 to May 2006. Of 1313 individuals examined, 668 were females (50.9%) and 645 were males (49.1%). The overall sex ratio did not deviate significantly in favour of females (♀ : ♂ = 1.04 : 1). Monthly changes in the Gonado–Somatic Index (GSI) showed a rapid increase from May to June and an extended very high level from June to September (4.43–3.47% for females and 3.35–2.61% for males), before declining sharply in October (down to 2.02% for females and 0.57% for males). The gametogenesis activity began with a pre‐maturation phase from March to May, followed by a ripe‐spawning phase from June to September. From the last days of July to the end of October, the gonads were in the spent and post‐spawning stages. From November to early May, gonads were in the resting stages. The size at which 50% of the population reached sexual maturity was not significantly different between males and females :  males attained sexual maturity at fork length FL50 = 161.20 ± 0.37 mm (n = 262), whereas females attained maturity at FL50 = 160.70 ± 0.23 mm (n = 296). The age of maturity for both sexes occurred at 2.1 years.  相似文献

The aim of the present study was to know the cyclic changes in gonadal maturation and to investigate the various developmental stages of oocytes and testicular germ cells of snow trout, Schizopyge niger. A total of 316 fish specimens were procured from three sites of river Jhelum during November 2016 to October 2017 and the histological analysis of their gonad was carried out. The results of the present study indicates that the male population was found significantly (p < 0.05) higher compared to female population and were reported as (1.6:1; M:F). The highest mean GSI value was recorded in male (12.24 ± 0.89) during the month of March and for female (13.74 ± 0.92) also in the month of March, which indicated that the gonadal development reached its peak during this month. The highest mean oocyte diameter was 1.04 ± 0.20 mm observed in March, showing that the oocyte reached its maturity during this month. Histological study of ovary revealed the evidence of vitellogenic yolk granule stage and ripe mature stage from December to April. While in case of male, four stages of spermatogenesis were distinguished and spermatozoa were highly abundant in the months of March and April. Mean ± SE of absolute fecundity was 3,224 ± 421 eggs and also, the relative fecundity was 69 egg/g body weight. Based on the results of GSI and the analysis of gonad histology, it was observed that the peak breeding season of S. niger occurred in the month of March. It was also noted that spawning period of this fish begins in the month of February and lasts till April with a peak breeding season in the month of March. The present study will provide a baseline information about the appropriate peak breeding of the fish, which will be useful for artificial breeding as well for prevention of fishing from natural habitat.  相似文献

From June 2004 to May 2006, the reproductive biology of the blue runner Caranx crysos was studied in the Gulf of Gabes (Southern Tunisia). Of 1668 individuals examined, 777 were females (46.6%) and 891 were males (53.4%). The sex ratio significantly deviated in favour of males (♀:♂ = 0.87 : 1). The difference in the numbers of females and males was significant among size‐classes. However, there was no significant difference between sexes over months and seasons. Monthly changes in the Gonado‐Somatic Index (GSI) showed a rapid increase during summer to very high levels in July (3.51% for males and 2.55% for females) and August (3.47% for males and 2.59% for females) before declining sharply in September (0.58% for females and 0.38% for males). The gametogenesis activity began with a pre‐maturation phase, from 20 May to the first 10 days of July, followed by a pre‐spawning phase, from 20 July to 20 August. From the last 10 days of August to 20 September the gonads were in the ripe and spawning stages. From the end of September to early May, gonads were in the post‐spawning and resting stages. The size at which 50% of the population reached sexual maturity was significantly different in males and females: males attained sexual maturity at fork length FL50 = 210.20, whereas females attained maturity at FL50 = 222.3 mm. Age at maturity was 2.4 years for males and 2.8 years for females.  相似文献

Some aspects of reproductive biology of Pethia ticto (Hamilton, 1822) from the Gorai River of southwestern (SW) Bangladesh were investigated by regular monthly samples for a period of one year during July 2010 to June 2011. A sum of 1200 specimens (male = 454 and female = 746) were collected using cast net, lift net and conical trap. Total length (TL) and Body weight (BW) were measured with slide caliper and digital balance, respectively for each individual. Based on gonadosomatic index (GSI), modified gonadosomatic index (MGSI) and Dobriyal index (DI) first sexual maturity was 4.30 cm TL for male and 4.80 cm TL for female. Also, on the basis of higher values of GSI, MGSI and DI spawning season was ranged from April to September for P. ticto in the Gorai River ecosystem. The fecundity was ranged from 2230–8450 with a mean value of 4779 ± 1578. In addition, there was a significant relationship between total length and fecundity (r= .931, < .001); body weight and fecundity (r= .943, < .001). Therefore, the findings of this study would be very effective for sustainable management of this threatened species in the Gorai River and surrounding ecosystem.  相似文献

Oogenesis, oocyte maturation pattern, spawning rhythm, spawning frequency, batch fecundity and oocyte diameter–frequency distribution of the black pomfret, Parastromateus niger (Bloch, 1795) in Kuwaiti waters were investigated from October 2003 to September 2005, using histological and morphological methods. The process of development is divided into four major phases: (i) primary growth phase; (ii) secondary growth phase; (iii) maturation phase; and (iv) spawning phase, followed by the regressed phase. Development of the yolky oocyte is an asynchronous process resulting, by the time of oocyte maturation, in a clear differentiation between a ready batch of oocytes (ready for spawning) and a reserve pool. Consequently, P. niger is capable of spawning multiple times throughout the reproductive season. Spawning frequency estimates, based on final oocyte maturation (FOM) method indicated that the species spawns once every 2.8 days during an 8‐month spawning season lasting from February to September, with a potential annual number of 22.4 spawns. Batch fecundity (BF) (2132–2001 648, mean 406 010 eggs), was significantly positively related to both standard length (SL) (P < 0.05) and ovary‐free body weight (OFBW) (P < 0.05), both parameters being good predictors of BF (r2 = 30.8% for SL, from 22 cm onwards, and r2 = 29.6% for OFBW, from 129.5 g onwards). No significant differences in monthly BF were found throughout the spawning season. Relative batch fecundity was 336 eggs/g OFBW; thus, estimate for potential annual relative batch fecundity was 7526 eggs g?1 OFBW. The oocyte diameter–frequency distribution analysis revealed a multimodal distribution (at 100–200, 300–400 and 500–700 μm), confirming the evidence of multiple spawning.  相似文献

Oreochromis karongae (Trewavas, 1941) is one of the indigenous Tilapia species exhibiting favourable traits for aquaculture in Malawi. However, commercial fingerling production is still a problem. An experiment was carried out to investigate the effect of raising ambient temperature to 27°C on oocyte development of the fish. Female O. karongae were reared under two temperature regimes: at room (20.3 ± 0.8°C) and at raised (26.5 ± 0.5°C) temperature for 90 days. Changes in gonadosomatic index (GSI) and oocyte developmental stages were determined every 45 days. Fish samples from the pond (22.5 ± 3.4°C) from which experimental fish were collected were used for comparison. Results showed that raising temperature to 26.5 ± 0.5°C significantly enhanced oocyte development. Higher GSIs (P ≤ 0.05) were obtained after 45 and 90 days in fish cultured at elevated temperature (0.82 ± 0.66 and 1.13 ± 0.47%, respectively) than at room temperature (0.06 ± 0.03 and 0.37 ± 0.05 %, respectively). GSI of fish samples from the pond were not different from that of fish from room temperature. After 45 days, relative frequency of mature oocytes was higher (P ≤ 0.05) in fish from raised temperature (60.42 ± 3.63%) than in fish from room (1.76 ± 0.84%) and pond temperature (2.43 ± 1.38%). After 90 days, the frequency of mature oocytes in fish from raised temperature was not different from pond fish (8.68 ± 2.40 and 10.99 ± 3.41%, respectively). Fish from room temperature had a low (P ≤ 0.05) frequency of mature oocytes (3.12 ± 2.03%). The results suggest that O. karongae has the potential to spawn throughout the year when the temperature is manipulated.  相似文献

We studied female reproductive biology of Trichomycterus corduvense. The study was carried out in the Anizacate River (Córdoba, Argentina). Samples were collected throughout one year on a monthly basis. Seven oocyte phases were identified. Five ovarian stages were described based on the macroscopic analysis of the oocyte phases. The spawning season for the species ranges from October to February; it was determined based on variations in GSI and the existence of mature females. The dynamics of oocyte development of T. corduvense, indicated the asynchronism of maturation. The correlation coefficient between fecundity and the individual weight was very low. Therefore, we suggest that this coefficient cannot be used to predict T. corduvense fecundity.  相似文献

The yellowfin seabream (Acanthopagrus latus) has a good potential for mariculture in Iran, so studies on various aspects of its culture has been carried out. In this study, the characteristic of reproduction in this species was investigated. The involvement of steroid hormones in the development of gonads was assayed by sampling blood and gonad tissue in 85 females of A. latus in fish caught from the Musa Creek, north-west Persian Gulf from October 2010 to May 2011. Gonadosomatic index (GSI) and hepatosomatic index (HSI) were recorded. Developmental stages were associated with changes in sex steroids, GSI and HSI. GSI and HSI began to increase in November (immature stage) and reached the highest value in March (ripe stage), decreasing sharply in April (spent stage). Plasma values of 17β-estradiol (E2) levels reached their highest levels in spawning females in March and then decreased in April. Progesterone levels were low through ovarian development, reached a maximum simultaneously with testosterone in February (mature stage) and then decreased in March (ripe stage). The seasonal changes observed in plasma steroid levels and GSI reflected the pattern of oocyte development and the spawning behavior of yellowfin seabream and were typical of the patterns described in most multiple spawners studied to date.  相似文献

Seasonality is known to influence ant activity in many tropical rain forests in the world such as South America and Africa. We surveyed ant fauna in the leaf litter in the locality of Minko'o. The work aimed to evaluate the effect of seasonal variation on the diversity and composition of litter ants. Ants were sampled from November 2015 to June 2017, using four sampling methods: visual capture, bait, pitfall trap and extraction. Species richness, Shannon diversity index and analysis of similarities were used to characterise diversity of ant communities between seasons. We collected 306 ant species, shared out between 56 genera and 11 subfamilies. Subfamilies Myrmicinae, Ponerinae, Dolichoderinae, Formicinae, Dorylinae, Cerapachyinae and Pseudomyrmecinae occurred in all the seasons. Species richness was highest in major dry season with 243 species followed by minor rainy season with 188, major rainy season with 177 species and finally minor dry season that recorded the lowest with 155 species. Kruskal–Wallis test showed that ant species richness did not differ between seasons (p > 0.05). Species diversity index indicated that diversity was the highest during minor dry season (H′ = 4.24), followed by the major dry season (H′ = 4.23), minor rainy season (H′ = 4.21) and lowest during major rainy season (H′ = 4.06). Eight most frequents ants have been recorded: Axinidris sp.1, Camponotus flavomarginatus, Monomorium guineense, Myrmicaria opaciventris, Odontomachus troglodytes, Carebara perpusilla, Paltothyreus tarsatus and Pheidole megacephala. Assessment of the seasonal effect on diversity reveals that dry season is richer and more diverse than rainy season and the season significantly influence the diversity of litter ants.  相似文献
