The primary aim of our study was to determine the influence of taking chromium plus carnitine on insulin resistance, with a secondary objective of evaluating the influences on lipid profiles and weight loss in overweight subjects with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). In a 12-week randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial, 54 overweight women were randomly assigned to receive either supplements (200 μg/day chromium picolinate plus 1000 mg/day carnitine) or placebo (27/each group). Chromium and carnitine co-supplementation decreased weight (− 3.6 ± 1.8 vs. − 1.0 ± 0.7 kg, P < 0.001), BMI (− 1.3 ± 0.7 vs. − 0.3 ± 0.3 kg/m2, P < 0.001), fasting plasma glucose (FPG) (− 5.1 ± 6.0 vs. − 1.1 ± 4.9 mg/dL, P = 0.01), insulin (− 2.0 ± 1.4 vs. − 0.2 ± 1.2 μIU/mL, P < 0.001), insulin resistance (− 0.5 ± 0.4 vs. − 0.04 ± 0.3, P < 0.001), triglycerides (− 18.0 ± 25.2 vs. + 5.5 ± 14.4 mg/dL, P < 0.001), total (− 17.0 ± 20.3 vs. + 3.6 ± 12.0 mg/dL, P < 0.001), and LDL cholesterol (− 13.3 ± 19.2 vs. + 1.4 ± 13.3 mg/dL, P = 0.002), and elevated insulin sensitivity (+ 0.007 ± 0.005 vs. + 0.002 ± 0.005, P < 0.001). In addition, co-supplementation upregulated peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (P = 0.02) and low-density lipoprotein receptor expression (P = 0.02). Overall, chromium and carnitine co-supplementation for 12 weeks to overweight women with PCOS had beneficial effects on body weight, glycemic control, lipid profiles except HDL cholesterol levels, and gene expression of PPAR-γ and LDLR. This study evaluated the influence of dietary L‐tryptophan (TRP) supplementation on the time course of aggressive behaviour and on neuroendocrine and hormonal indicators in juvenile matrinxã Brycon amazonicus. Supplementation with TRP promoted a change in the fight pattern at the beginning of an interaction with an intruder, resulting in decreased aggressive behaviours during the first 20 min. The decrease in aggression did not persist throughout the interaction but increased at 3 and 6 h after the beginning of the fight. Monoamine levels in the hypothalamus were not influenced by TRP before or after the fight; however, the hypothalamic serotonin (5‐HT) concentration and the 5‐hydroxyindole‐3‐acetic acid (5HIAA):5‐HT ratio were significantly correlated with the reduction in aggressive behaviour at the beginning of the fight. Cortisol was not altered by TRP before the fight. After the fight cortisol increased to higher levels in B. amazonicus fed with supplementary TRP. These results indicate that TRP supplementation alters the aggressive behaviour of B. amazonicus and that this effect is limited to the beginning of the fight, suggesting a transient effect of TRP on aggressive behaviour. This is the first study reporting the effects of TRP supplementation on the time course of aggressive interaction in fishes.  相似文献

The aim of the study was to determine the susceptibility to predation of Atlantic sturgeon larvae (Acipenser oxyrinchus) reared under traditional hatchery conditions. Experiments were conducted to determine whether predators would prey on Atlantic sturgeon if alternative prey was available and if the presence of substrate on the tank bottom impacted the number of Atlantic sturgeon consumed. European perch (Perca fluviatilis) was used as the predator, and the alternative prey were three‐spined stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus) or gudgeon (Gobio gobio). The predators and alternative prey were obtained from the wild. The mortality of sturgeon (n = 10) and alternative prey (n = 10) caused by four predators was recorded during 15 min trials. Trials with three‐spined stickleback and gudgeon as alternative prey were performed separately. Each experimental trial was repeated five times. The predators consumed significantly more Atlantic sturgeon than alternative prey in both the experimental setups when the bottom of the tank was covered with gravel and stone substrate and when there was no substrate. In trials with three‐spined stickleback the mortality of Atlantic sturgeon in both experimental setups was 94 ± 8.94%, while that of three‐spined stickleback in the setup with substrate was 20 ± 19.23%, and without substrate it was 22 ± 10.00%. European perch also consumed more Atlantic sturgeon than they did gudgeon, and the mean Atlantic sturgeon mortality in the experimental setup with substrate was 94 ± 5.48%, while for gudgeon it was 48 ± 8.37%. In the experimental setup without substrate the predators also consumed substantially more Atlantic sturgeon than gudgeon, with a mean Atlantic sturgeon mortality of 94 ± 8.94%, while for gudgeon it was 76 ± 5.48%. The study indicated that hatchery reared Atlantic sturgeon larvae are susceptible to predation by European perch. Predation could impact the survival of juvenile Atlantic sturgeon in the natural environment, and it could be one of the factors that is impeding the restoration of this species in the Baltic Sea basin.  相似文献

The m and p isomers of hydroxyphenylacetic acid have been identified and quantitated in whole rat brain and in several regions using a capillary column high resolution gas chromatography–mass spectrometry procedure. Their concentrations were: for m-hydroxyphenylacetic acid (mean ± S.E., number of determinations in parentheses)—whole brain, 2.3 ± 0.3 ng/g (7); hypothalamus, 1.2 ± 0.3 ng/g (5); caudate nucleus, 5.5 ± 0.6 ng/g (5); brain stem, 1.8 ± 0.1 ngig (5); cerebellum, 1.2 ± 0.1 ng/g (5) and the “rest,” 1.7 ± 0.1 ng/g (5); and for p-hydroxyphenylacetic acid–whole brain, 10.6 ± 0.7 ng/g (7); hypothalamus, 4.5 ± 0.1 ng/g (4); caudate nucleus, 28.3 ±1.6 ng/g (5); brain stem, 8.6 ± 0.6 ng/g (5); cerebellum, 8.1 ± 0.4 ng/g (9, and the “rest,” 5.3 ± 0.5 ng/g (5). This heterogeneous distribution parallels closely that exhibited by their respective precursor amines, m- and p-tyramine.  相似文献

The swimming performance of juvenile rock carp (Procypris rabaudi, Tchang) subjected to repeated fatigue exercise was studied using a flume-type respirometer at 20°C. The critical swimming speed (Ucrit) and oxygen consumption rate (MO2) of juvenile rock carp were measured during two successive stepped velocity tests, following a 60 min rest interval. Ucrit of rock carp was giving a recovery ratio (Rr) of 92.64%, and exertion exercise decreases Ucrit. When MO2 was plotted as a linear function of U, the slope for trial 1 was 1.06 and 1.50 for trial 2, indicating a decreasing in swimming efficiency. The maximum metabolic rate (MMR) increased from 17.06 ± 1.14 mmol O2/(kg·hr) to 19.14 ± 1.23 mmol O2/(kg·hr), and the exercise post oxygen consumption rate (EPOC) increased from 9.00 to 9.65 mmol O2/kg. Repeated fatiguing exercise increased both the aerobic and anaerobic cost of reaching Ucrit, but anaerobic metabolism accounted for a larger proportion in the trial 2. The data investigation on the swimming performance and the physiological response to fatigue provide important design criteria for fishways.  相似文献

The purpose of the study was to determine the concentration of trace elements present in scalp hair sample of schizophrenic patients and to find out the relationship between trace elements level and nutritional status or socioeconomic factors. The study was conducted among 30 schizophrenic male patients and 30 healthy male volunteers. Patients were recruited from Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University by random sampling. Hair trace element concentrations were determined by flame atomic absorption spectroscopy and analyzed by independent t test, Pearson’s correlation analysis, regression analysis, and analysis of variance (ANOVA). Mn, Zn, Ca, Cu, and Cd concentrations of schizophrenic patients were 3.8 ± 2.31 μg/gm, 171.6 ± 59.04 μg/gm, 396.23 ± 157.83 μg/gm, 15.40 ± 5.68 μg/gm, and 1.14 ± 0.89 μg/gm of hair sample, while those of control subjects were 4.4 ± 2.32 μg/gm, 199.16 ± 27.85 μg/gm, 620.9 ± 181.55 μg/gm, 12.23 ± 4.56 μg/gm, and 0.47 ± 0.32 μg/gm of hair sample, respectively. The hair concentration of Zn and Ca decreased significantly (p = 0.024; p = 0.000, respectively) and the concentration of Cu and Cd increased significantly (p = 0.021; p = 0.000, respectively) in schizophrenic patients while the concentration of Mn (p = 0.321) remain unchanged. Socioeconomic data reveals that most of the patients were poor, middle-aged and divorced. Mean body mass indices (BMIs) of the control group (22.26 ± 1.91 kg/m2) and the patient group (20.42 ± 3.16 kg/m2) were within the normal range (18.5−25.0 kg/m2). Pearson’s correlation analysis suggested that only Ca concentration of patients had a significant positive correlation with the BMI (r = 0.597; p = 0.000) which was further justified from the regression analysis (R 2 = 44%; t = 3.59; p = 0.002) and one-way ANOVA test (F = 3.62; p = 0.015). A significant decrease in the hair concentration of Zn and Ca as well as a significant increase in the hair concentration of Cu and Cd in schizophrenic patients than that of its control group was observed which may provide prognostic tool for the diagnosis and treatment of this disease. However, further work with larger population is suggested to examine the exact correlation between trace element level and the degree of disorder.  相似文献

A feeding trial was conducted to study the effect of dietary protein (DP) levels on the enzyme activities of different stocks of Macrobrachium rosenbergii juveniles, fed two diets prawn type diets either at optimum (ODP, 32%) or sub‐optimum (SDP, 27%) dietary protein. The activity of key enzymes: glycolysis, gluconeogenesis, amino acid catabolism, pentose phosphate pathway, and energy metabolism was examined on different stocks of M. rosenbergii juveniles in various tissues (muscle, hepatopancreas, and gill). Wild juveniles of M. rosenbergii were collected from the west coast of India, Gujarat (G), Maharashtra (M) and from the east coast of India, Andhra Pradesh (A), and raised in culture ponds of 200 m2 at 1 juvenile m‐2. The experiment was conducted for a period of 60 days. A Visible Implant Elastomer (VIE) Tag was injected into different prawn juveniles’ stocks A, (3.06–3.10 g), M, (0.80–1.01 g) and G (0.90–1.06 g) for the individual identification of each class. All the animals were acclimatized for 7 days before being released into the pond. Each of the two diets, the first with 27% SDP, termed the sub‐optimum level (S), and the second 32% DP, termed the optimum level (O), was fed in triplicate ponds. The weight gain of stocked prawn was significantly higher for G stock (3.03 ± 0.18 g) compared to M stock (2.53 ± 0.25 g) and A stock (1.33 ± 0.10 g). In addition weight gain in ODP was significantly higher (3.05 ± 0.22 g) compared to SDP (2.11 ± 0.17 g). Furthermore, both protein level and stock type had a significant (p ≤ 0.05) effect on the survival rate, specific growth rate, and feed conversion ratio of the prawn. A significant interaction was recorded between metabolic enzyme activities and the variation of dietary protein levels and differences in M. rosenbergii stocks, in which stock “G” and “M” exhibited healthier enzyme physiological status than stock “A”. The findings presented here may conclude that the enzymes quickly respond to dietary protein manipulations of cultured shrimp. The results can be useful in identifying the optimum stock (genotypes) in a given culture condition and subsequently higher production may be achieved.  相似文献

Myosmine is a minor tobacco alkaloid with widespread occurrence in the human diet. Myosmine is genotoxic in human cells and is readily nitrosated and peroxidated yielding reactive intermediates with carcinogenic potential. For biomonitoring of short-term and long-term exposure, analytical methods were established for determination of myosmine together with nicotine and cotinine in plasma, saliva and toenail by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC/MS). Validation of the method with samples of 14 smokers and 10 non-smokers showed smoking-dependent differences of myosmine in toenails (66?±?56 vs 21?±?15?ng?g?1, p?<0.01) as well as saliva (2.54?±?2.68 vs 0.73?±?0.65?ng ml?1, p <0.01). However, these differences were much smaller than those with nicotine (1971?±?818 vs 132?±?82?ng g?1, p <0.0001) and cotinine (1237?±?818 vs <35?ng?g?1) in toenail and those of cotinine (97.43?±?84.54 vs 1.85?±?4.50?ng ml?1, p <0.0001) in saliva. These results were confirmed in plasma samples from 84 patients undergoing gastro-oesophageal endoscopy. Differences between 25 smokers and 59 non-smokers are again much lower for myosmine (0.30?±?0.35 vs 0.16?±?0.18?ng?ml?1, p <0.05) than for cotinine (54.67?±?29.63 vs 0.61?±?1.82?ng ml?1, p <0.0001). In conclusion, sources other than tobacco contribute considerably to the human body burden of myosmine.  相似文献

Research was performed on a group of 30 patients with non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM), who never received antidiabetic medication before, and on a group of 17 healthy adults. The patients were administered treatment with metformin, 1,000 mg/day. Plasmatic and urinary concentration of magnesium have been measured, copper and zinc along with the concentrations of glucose, HDL, LDL, cholesterol, tryglicerides, HbA1c, and total erythrocyte magnesium, in advance and after 3 months of treatment. Data showed significant differences in the NIDDM group vs the control group: for plasma magnesium—1.95 ± 0.19 vs 2.20 ± 0.18 mg/dl, p < 0.001; urine magnesium—237.28 ± 34.51 vs 126.25 ± 38.22 mg/24 h, p < 0.001; erythrocyte magnesium—5.09 ± 0.63 vs 6.38 ± 0.75 mg/dl, p < 0.001; plasma zinc—67.56 ± 6.21 vs 98.41 ± 20.47 μg/dl, p < 0.001; urine zinc—1,347.54 ± 158.24 vs 851.65 ± 209.75 μg/24 h, p < 0.001; plasma copper—111.91 ± 20.98 vs 96.33 ± 8.56 μg/dl, p < 0.001; and urine copper—51.70 ± 23.79 vs 36.00 ± 11.70 μg/24 h, p < 0.05. Treatment with metformin for 3 months modified significant erythrocyte magnesium—5.75 ± 0.61 vs 5.09 ± 0.63 mg/dl, p < 0.001 and urine magnesium—198.27 ± 27.07 vs 237.28 ± 34.51 mg/24 h, p < 0.001, whereas it did not modify significant the plasmatic and urinary concentration of the other cations. The erythrocyte magnesium concentration was inversely correlated with HbA1c (r = −0.438, p = 0.015). The plasma level of copper was positively correlated with HbA1c (r = 0.517, p < 0.003), tryglicerides (r = 0.534, p < 0.003), and cholesterol (r = 0.440, p < 0.05), and the plasma level of zinc was inversely correlated with glycemia (r = −0.399, p = 0.029). Our data show a significant action of metformin therapy, by increasing the total intraerythrocyte magnesium concentration and decreasing the urinary magnesium elimination, positively correlated with the decrease of glycemia and HbA1c in NIDDM patients.  相似文献

Laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding (LAGB) causes significant weight loss in morbidly obese adults. However, its consequences on nutritional status still remain unclear. There are a few studies determining the nutritional status after LAGB and none have focused on the serum levels of zinc (Zn), copper (Cu), and ceruloplasmin (CP). We aimed to investigate the effects of LAGB surgery on plasma Zn, Cu, and CP levels. Thirty patients with LAGB with morbid obesity were included. Blood samples were collected preooperatively and in the postoperative third month to determine plasma Zn, Cu, and CP levels. The mean preoperative and postoperative body mass indexes (BMI) were 44.9 ± 7.4 kg/m2 and 44.1 ± 6.5 kg/m2, respectively. The mean weight loss was 12.9 ± 3.3 kg at the postoperative third month. The postoperative Zn (500 ± 130 ng/ml), Cu (280 ± 80 ng/ml), and CP (23.9 ± 8.8 mg/dl) values were statistically significantly lower than the preooperative Zn (740 ± 230 ng/ml), Cu (370 ± 80 ng/ml) and CP (33.3 ± 15.7 mg/dl) levels (p < 0.05). Decreases in the plasma levels of Zn, Cu, and CP were seen postoperatively following LAGB surgery. The nutritional status of LAGB-applied patients should be monitored and mineral supplementation may be considered.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to evaluate citric acid (0.0, 1.0, 2.0 and 3.0%) in isonitrogenous (23% of digestible protein) and isoenergetic (13.38 MJ of digestible energy/kg) pacu Piaractus mesopotamicus (Holmberg, 1887) diets. A 90‐day feeding trial was conducted to evaluate the growth performance, haematological parameters and pH of the diets, stomach and gut, somatic indices, nitrogen retention and body composition of pacu juveniles. Fish (n = 160, 12.53 ± 0.17g) were distributed in 16 aquaria (300‐L) with a recirculating water system (4 L/min) and controlled temperature (25.26 ± 0.47°C) in an experimental design completely randomized with four treatments and four replicates. Posteriorly, apparent digestibility coefficients (ADC) were assessed with pacu (n = 96, 80.35 ± 5.12 g) fed experimental diets including 0.1% chromium oxide III. Diet pH decreased (p < .05) with graded levels of citric acid to reduce pH in the stomach and gut. Pacu fed with 2.0% citric acid showed superior (p < .05) final weight at 30 days, compared to control; however, this did not differ by 60 and 90 days where was no difference (p > .05) in the haematology, somatic indices, body composition, or digestibility among treatments. The data showed that dietary citric acid improved the growth of pacu at 30 days, but had no long‐term effects on the digestibility of nutrients or the availability of P or Ca in the experimental diets.  相似文献

A feeding trial was conducted to study the effect of partial replacement of dietary monocalcium phosphate (MCP) with phytase on growth performance, feed utilization and phosphorus discharge in black sea bream, Acanthopagrus schlegelii. In the feeding trial, the control diet (designated as P1.5) was prepared with 1.5% MCP but without phytase, and the three other diets (designated as PP1.0, PP0.5 and PP0, respectively) were supplemented with 1.0%, 0.5% and 0% MCP, respectively, along with 200 mg (400 U) phytase/kg diet in each. Each diet was tested in triplicate tanks and fish were fed twice daily to satiation. After an 8‐week feeding trial in indoor flow‐through cylindrical fibreglass tanks (25 fish per tank, initial body weight: 11.5 ± 0.12 g), fish fed with PP1.0 and PP0.5 had no significant change in weight gain (WG), specific growth rate (SGR), protein efficiency rate (PER) or feed conversion ratio (FCR) compared to the control (p > .05), whereas fish fed with PP0 showed a significantly lower growth performance in the above parameters (p < .05). The addition of phytase did not affect the body composition or muscle composition. The apparent digestibility coefficients (ADCs) of crude protein and phosphorus increased when fish were fed diets in which MCP was replaced by phytase. Phosphorus discharge was also significantly reduced in fish fed diets in which MCP was replaced by phytase (10.2 ± 0.50 to 8.01 ± 0.47 g/kg weight gain). The present study suggests that dietary MCP can be reduced when phytase is added to the black sea bream diet, with a maximum MCP reduction level of up to 1% when phytase is supplemented at 200 mg (400 U)/kg diet. Thus, phytase in the diet of black sea bream is economically and ecologically beneficial.  相似文献

Objective: To examine the effects of graded doses of hydrocortisone (HC) on leptin secretion, and determine the effect of fasting. Research Methods and Procedures: This was a randomized, placebo‐controlled, crossover study, with a 1‐week “washout” period between interventions. Eight healthy subjects [age = 36 ± 2.3 years (±SE), body mass index = 31.5 ± 1.6 kg/m2] completed the dose‐response study in which an intravenous infusion of saline (placebo) or HC (30 or 100 mg) was administered for 24 hours. Four healthy subjects (age = 35.2 ± 3.0 years, body mass index = 27.1 ± 2.1 kg/m2) completed the fasting study, which entailed continuous infusion of saline, HC (300 mg/24 hours) in the fed state, or HC (300 mg/24 hours) with total caloric deprivation for 24 hours. Blood sampling was performed every 1 to 2 hours for measurement of leptin, cortisol, insulin, and glucose levels. Results: Peak hyperleptinemia occurred after 16 hours of HC infusion; peak/baseline leptin levels were 129% (placebo), 140% (30 mg of HC for 24 hours, p = 0.05), and 185% (100 mg of HC for 24 hours, p < 0.01). During infusion of HC (300 mg/24 hours or placebo), the peak/baseline plasma leptin levels were 16.1 ± 5.8/12.8 ± 5.9 ng/mL (placebo with food, 126%), 14.6 ± 6.0/12.5 ± 6.5 ng/mL (HC fasting, 117%), and 32.5 ± 12.5/12.0 ± 8.4 ng/mL (HC with food, 271%, p < 0.001). Discussion: Leptin secretory responses occur at physiological doses of HC, are obliterated by fasting, and thus may be of metabolic significance.  相似文献

Objective: Our goal was to study how plasma leptin concentration, superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity, and weight loss are related in obese adults. Research Methods and Procedures: Serum leptin concentration, SOD activities, general biochemical data, and body composition measurements were obtained for 62 overweight and obese subjects before and after an 8‐week body weight reduction (BWR) regimen. The subjects were on dietary control, performed moderate aerobic and strength training exercises, and attended educational lectures. Results: The measurement results indicated that the following criteria were significantly reduced: body weight [84.4 ± 17.0 vs. 79.3 ± 16.1 (standard error) kg, p < 0.001]; BMI (31.5 ± 4.3 vs. 29.4 ± 4.2 kg/m2, p < 0.001), and fat mass (33.3 ± 10.0 vs. 29.8 ± 10.4 kg, p < 0.001). Plasma leptin levels also significantly decreased from 31.5 ± 17.6 to 26.5 ± 17.2 ng/mL (p < 0.001). Additionally, SOD activity was significantly increased from 261.4 ± 66.0 to 302.7 ± 30.9 U/mL (p < 0.001). Based on linear regression analysis results, a 3.78‐ to 8.13‐kg reduction in weight can be expected after the 8‐week BWR regimen when initial leptin concentration was 5 to 30 ng/mL. Discussion: We found that an 8‐week exercise and diet program was effective in reducing weight and fat mass and, notably, had further beneficial effects on leptin resistance and SOD activity. Additionally, this study demonstrated that initial plasma leptin concentration may be used as a predictor for weight loss outcome.  相似文献

Synbiotics are known to exert multiple beneficial effects, including anti-inflammatory and antioxidant actions. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of synbiotic supplementation on carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT), biomarkers of inflammation, and oxidative stress in people with overweight, diabetes, and coronary heart disease (CHD). This randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial was conducted and involved 60 people with overweight, diabetes, and CHD, aged 50–85 years old. Participants were randomly allocated into two groups to take either synbiotic supplements containing three probiotic bacteria spices Lactobacillus acidophilus strain T16 (IBRC-M10785), Lactobacillus casei strain T2 (IBRC-M10783), and Bifidobacterium bifidum strain T1 (IBRC-M10771) (2 × 109 CFU/g each) plus 800 mg inulin or placebo (n = 30 each group) for 12 weeks. Fasting blood samples were taken at baseline and after the 12-week intervention period to determine metabolic variables. After the 12-week intervention, compared with the placebo, synbiotic supplementation significantly reduced serum high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) (− 3101.7 ± 5109.1 vs. − 6.2 ± 3163.6 ng/mL, P = 0.02), plasma malondialdehyde (MDA) (− 0.6 ± 1.0 vs. − 0.1 ± 0.3 μmol/L, P = 0.01), and significantly increased nitric oxide (NO) levels (+ 7.8 ± 10.3 vs. − 3.6 ± 6.9 μmol/L, P < 0.001). We did not observe any significant changes of synbiotic supplementation on other biomarkers of oxidative stress and CIMT levels. Overall, synbiotic supplementation for 12 weeks among people with overweight, diabetes, and CHD had beneficial effects on serum hs-CRP, plasma NO, and MDA levels; however, it did not have any effect on other biomarkers of oxidative stress and CIMT levels.

The aim of this study is to investigate the effectiveness and practicality of the newly proposed guidance to take hypnotics 7 h before one’s usual wake-up time, compared to the conventional guidance to do so 30 min before bedtime. Subjects with primary insomnia who were not satisfied with their hypnotics were included between November 2014 and October 2015. Participants were instructed to take their own sleeping pills 7 h before their usual wake-up times, and sleep-related time variables and symptom questionnaires were assessed at baseline and after 2 weeks. Among 32 subjects, 23 patients were successfully followed up. Adhering to the said 7-h instruction, 73.9 % (n = 17) were satisfied with their sleeping pills. Mean hypnotics administration time was significantly delayed from 9:32 p.m. ± 0:58 to 10:55 p.m. ± 0:46 (p < 0.001), duration from pills to wake-up time (PTW) was shortened from 9.0 ± 1.1 to 7.1 ± 0.8 h (p < 0.001), and sleep latency (p = 0.023) was significantly shortened. Scores of ISI and PSQI significantly improved (p < 0.001), and the improvements of ISI and PSQI were positively correlated with the shortened sleep latency (r = 0.49, p < 0.05) and PTW (r = 0.54, p < 0.05), respectively. Advising patients to take hypnotics about 7 h before their usual wake-up time could increase the level of satisfaction with their original medication as is. In incorporating concepts of cognitive-behavioral therapy, this recommendation may serve as a simple but considerably useful guidance on the proper timing for taking prescribed sleeping pills.

This study verified the effects of CaSO4 on physiological responses of the tropical fish matrinxãBrycon amazonicus (200.2 ± 51.1 g) in water containing CaSO4 after a 4‐h transportation at concentrations of: 0, 75, 150, and 300 mg L?1. Blood samples were collected prior to transportation (initial levels), immediately after packaging, at arrival, and 24 h and 96 h after transportation (recovery). Cortisol levels increased after packaging (118.2 ± 14.2 ng ml?1), and decreased slightly after transportation in water containing CaSO4 (106.8 ± 14.1), but remained higher than initial levels (21.0 ± 2.6 ng ml?1). Fish kept at 150 mg L?1 CaSO4 reached the pre‐transportation levels at 24 h of recovery. Blood glucose increased after transportation in all treatments (8.2 ± 0.2 mmol L?1) and declined after full recovery to values below initial levels (4.8 ± 0.1 mmol L?1). Chloride levels did not change in CaSO4 treatments; serum sodium concentrations decreased after packaging and after transportation. Serum calcium levels did not differ among treatments, but decreased after packaging and increased at 96 h of recovery. Hematocrit and the number of red blood cells were higher in all treatments after packaging and arrival, except in fish exposed to 300 mg L?1 CaSO4. Mean corpuscular volume increased in 75 mg L?1 CaSO4, which reached the higher VCM after transportation. Hemoglobin levels increased only after transportation, regardless of calcium sulfate levels. Handling before transportation and transportation itself were both stressful to fish; calcium sulfate at concentrations tested in the present work had a moderate influence in the reduction of stress responses.  相似文献

Glibenclamide (GL)-loaded microcapsules (MC) and transdermal patches (TDP) were formulated and in vitro and in vivo parameters compared to find out the best route of drug administration. The formulation TDP1 having a drug–polymer ratio 1:1 showed comparatively higher GL release and better permeation across mice skin (p < 0.05). From the comparative study, it was concluded that the transdermal system of GL produced better improvement compared to oral microcapsule administration (p < 0.05). The transdermal system exhibited comparatively slow and continuous supply of GL at a desired rate to systemic circulation avoiding metabolism, which improved day-to-day glycemic control in diabetic subjects. Transdermal system of GL exhibited better control of hyperglycemia and prolonged plasma half-life by transdermal systems (9.6 ± 1.2 h) in comparison with oral microcapsule (5.84 ± 2.1 h), indicating that the drug, when administered by transdermal systems, will remain in the body for a longer period. From the glucose tolerance test, transdermal route effectively maintained the normoglycemic levels in contrast to the oral group (MC1), which produced remarkable hypoglycemia ranging from −12.6 ± 2.1% to −18 ± 2.3%. The significantly high (p < 0.05) area under the curve values observed with transdermal system (1,346.2 ± 92.3 ng ml−1 h−1) also indicate increased bioavailability of the drug from these systems compared to the oral route (829.8 ± 76.4 ng ml−1 h−1).  相似文献

Aconophora compressa (Hemiptera: Membracidae), a biological control agent introduced against the weed Lantana camara (Verbenaceae) in Australia, has since been observed on several non-target plant species, including native mangrove Avicennia marina (Acanthaceae). In this study we evaluated the suitability of two native mangroves, A. marina and Aegiceras corniculatum (Myrsinaceae), for the survival and development of A. compressa through no-choice field cage studies. The longevity of females was significantly higher on L. camara (57.7 ± 3.8 days) than on A. marina (43.3 ± 3.3 days) and A. corniculatum (45.7 ± 3.8 days). The proportion of females laying eggs was highest on L. camara (72%) followed by A. marina (36%) and A. corniculatum (17%). More egg batches per female were laid on L. camara than on A. marina and A. corniculatum. Though more nymphs per shoot emerged on L. camara (29.9 ± 2.8) than on A. marina (13 ± 4.8) and A. corniculatum (10 ± 5.3), the number of nymphs that developed through to adults was not significantly different. The duration of nymphal development was longer on A. marina (67 ± 5.8 days) than on L. camara (48 ± 4 days) and A. corniculatum (43 ± 4.6 days). The results, which are in contrast to those from previous glasshouse and quarantine trials, provide evidence that A. compressa adults can survive, lay eggs and complete nymphal development on the two non-target native mangroves in the field under no-choice condition.  相似文献

The purpose of the study was to determine the serum concentration of trace elements of panic disorder patients and to find out the relationship between trace element levels and nutritional status or socio-economic factors. The study was conducted among 54 panic disorder patients and 52 healthy volunteers. Patients were recruited from Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University by random sampling. Serum trace element concentrations were determined by flame atomic absorption spectroscopy (for Mg, Zn, Ca, and Cu) as well as graphite furnace (for Mn). Data were analyzed by independent t test, Pearson’s correlation analysis, regression analysis, and ANOVA. The serum concentration of Mn, Zn, Ca, Cu, and Mg in panic disorder patients were 0.37 ± 0.30, 0.67 ± 0.20, 99.91 ± 15.15, 0.83 ± 0.23, and 21.14 ± 3.72 mg/L, while those were 0.4163 ± 0.2527, 0.86 ± 0.3, 106.6073 ± 18.6531, 0.8514 ± 0.3646, and 21.37 ± 2.03 mg/L in control subjects, respectively. The serum concentration of Zn decreased significantly (p = 0.001) in patient group. But the differences of the concentration of Mn, Ca, Cu, and Mg between patient and control group were not significant (p = 0.522, p = 0.065, p = 0.800, and p = 0.712, respectively). Socio-economic data reveal that most of the patients were very poor and middle aged. Mean BMIs of the control group (23.74 ± 2.71 kg/m2) and the patient group (22.62 ± 3.74 kg/m2) were within the normal range (18.5–25.0 kg/m2). There was no significant relationship between serum zinc level and BMI of patients (r = 0.038; p = 0.809). So the decreased level of serum zinc in panic disorder patients was not because of other reasons, but rather it may provide a prognostic tool for the diagnosis and treatment of this disease.  相似文献
