Stocks of the European eel Anguilla anguilla have been in a steep decline since the 1980s. Stocking of water bodies with juvenile eels captured in the wild to establish or enhance local populations has been a common practise in Europe for many decades. However, the degree of contribution by stocked eels to natural spawning capacity is poorly known and extensively debated. There have been suggestions that eels derived from stocking are less likely to contribute to the spawning stock due to a lack of navigational capability and lower fitness related to insufficiency of energetic resources. Results of the current study indicated that eels translocated long distances from the point of capture and released into inland waters in Lithuania are successfully undergoing the silvering process. A proportion of 23.7% (N = 27) among all migrating eels were described to be at the yellow (SI, SFII or SFIII) eel stage and downstream movements of these eels should be attributed to local movements, rather than spawning migration; 76.3% were assigned to the silver eel stage. This study suggests that 36.8% (N = 32) of downstream migrating silver eels of stocked origin had accumulated sufficient energetic resources for spawning migration and gonadal development and should be able to traverse the 7900-km distance to the presumptive spawning grounds in the Sargasso Sea. The rest of migrating silver eels (63.2%, N = 55) had insufficient energetic resources; the average potential swimming range of these eels was estimated to be 6135 ± 683 km.  相似文献

Panmictic species pose particular problems for conservation because their welfare can be addressed effectively only on a global scale. We recently documented by means of microsatellite analysis that the European eel (Anguilla anguilla) is not panmictic but instead shows genetic isolation by distance. In this study, we extended the analysis to the American eel (A. rostrata) by applying identical analytical procedures and statistical power. Results obtained for the American eel were in sharp contrast with those obtained for the European eel: the null hypothesis of panmixia could not be rejected, and no isolation by distance was detected. This implies that the species must be managed as a single population. Using Bayesian statistics, we also found that the effective population sizes for both species were surprisingly low and that the populations had undergone severe contractions, most probably during the Wisconsinan glaciation. The apparent sensitivity of eels to climatic changes affecting the strength and position of the Gulf Stream 20,000 years ago is particularly worrying, given the effects of the ongoing global warming on the North Atlantic climate. Moreover, additional short-term stresses such as surging glass eel prizes, overfishing and lethal parasitic infections negatively affect eel population size. The fascinating transatlantic migration and life cycle of Atlantic eels is also their Achilles' heel as these negative short- and long-term effects will probably culminate in a fatal synergy if drastic conservation measures are not implemented to protect these international biological resources.  相似文献

The natriuretic peptide system of a euryhaline teleost, the Japanese eel (Anguilla japonica), consists of three types of hormones [atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP), ventricular natriuretic peptide (VNP), and C-type natriuretic peptide (CNP)] and four types of receptors [natriuretic peptide receptors (NPR)-A, -B, -C, and -D]. Although ANP is recognized as a volume-regulating hormone that extrudes both Na(+) and water in mammals, ANP more specifically extrudes Na(+) in eels. Accumulating evidence shows that ANP is secreted in response to hypernatremia and acts to inhibit the uptake and to stimulate the excretion of Na(+) but not water, thereby promoting seawater (SW) adaptation. In fact, ANP is secreted immediately after transfer of eels to SW and ameliorates sudden increases in plasma Na(+) concentration through inhibition of drinking and intestinal absorption of NaCl. ANP also stimulates the secretion of cortisol, a long-acting hormone for SW adaptation, whereas ANP itself disappears quickly from the circulation. Thus ANP is a primary hormone responsible for the initial phase of SW adaptation. By contrast, CNP appears to be a hormone involved in freshwater (FW) adaptation. Recent data show that the gene expression of CNP and its specific receptor, NPR-B, is much enhanced in FW eels. In fact, CNP infusion increases (22)Na uptake from the environment in FW eels. These results show that ANP and CNP, despite high sequence identity, have opposite effects on salinity adaptation in eels. This difference apparently originates from the difference in their specific receptors, ANP for NPR-A and CNP for NPR-B. VNP may compensate the effects of ANP and CNP for adaptation to respective media, because it has high affinity to both receptors. On the basis of these data, the authors suggest that the natriuretic peptide system is a key endocrine system that allows this euryhaline fish to adapt to diverse osmotic environments, particularly in the initial phase of adaptation.  相似文献

The influence of salinity on habitat selection and growth in juvenile American eels Anguilla rostrata captured in four rivers across eastern Canada was assessed in controlled experiments in 2011 and 2012. Glass eels were first categorized according to their salinity preferences towards fresh (FW), salt (SW) or brackish water (BW) and the growth rate of each group of elvers was subsequently monitored in controlled FW and BW environments for 7 months. Most glass eels (78–89%) did not make a choice, i.e. they remained in BW. Salinity preferences were not influenced by body condition, although a possible role of pigmentation could not be ruled out. Glass eels that did make a choice displayed a similar preference for FW (60–75%) regardless of their geographic origin but glass eels from the St Lawrence Estuary displayed a significantly higher locomotor activity than those from other regions. Neither the salinity preferences showed by glass eels in the first experiment nor the rearing salinities appeared to have much influence on growth during the experiments. Elvers from Nova Scotia, however, reached a significantly higher mass than those from the St Lawrence Estuary thus supporting the hypothesis of genetically (or epigenetically) based differences for growth between A. rostrata from different origins. These results provide important ecological knowledge for the sustained exploitation and conservation of this threatened species.  相似文献

Eels are unique in that they maintain lower plasma SO(4)(2-) concentration in SO(4)(2-)-rich (~30 mM) seawater (SW) than in SO(4)(2-)-poor (<0.3 mM) freshwater (FW), showing drastic changes in SO(4)(2-) regulation between FW and SW. We previously showed that the expression of renal SO(4)(2-) transporter genes, FW-specific Slc13a1 and SW-specific Slc26a6a, changes profoundly after transfer of FW eels to SW, which results in the decrease in plasma SO(4)(2-) concentration after 3 days in SW. In this study, we attempted to identify the environmental factor(s) that trigger the switching of SO(4)(2-) regulation using changes in plasma and urine SO(4)(2-) concentrations and expression of the transporter genes as markers. Transfer of FW eels to 30 mM SO(4)(2-) or transfer of SW eels to SO(4)(2-)-free SW did not change the SO(4)(2-) regulation. Major divalent cations in SW, Mg(2+) (50 mM) and Ca(2+) (10 mM), were also ineffective, but 50 mM NaCl was effective for switching the SO(4)(2-) regulation. Further analyses using choline-Cl and Na-gluconate showed that Cl(-) is a primary factor and Na(+) is permissive for the Cl(-) effect. Since plasma SO(4)(2-) and Cl(-) concentrations were inversely correlated, we injected various solutions into the blood and found that Cl(-) alone triggered the switching from FW to SW-type regulation. Furthermore, the inhibitor of Na-Cl cotransporter (NCC) added to media significantly impaired the expression of SW-specific Slc26a6a in 150 mM NaCl. In summary, it appears that Cl(-) ions in SW are taken up into the circulation via the NCC together with Na(+), and the resultant increase in plasma Cl(-) concentration enhances SO(4)(2-) excretion by the kidney through downregulation of absorptive Slc13a1 and upregulation of excretory Slc26a6a, resulting in low plasma SO(4)(2-) concentration in SW.  相似文献

Winter skates, Leucoraja ocellata, exposed to 80% and 50% seawater (SW) exhibited rapid and significant weight gains followed by a slight recovery to new steady state levels within 8 days. Skates were acclimated at each salinity (100% SW [N = 16], 80% SW [N = 8], 50% SW [N = 8]), anesthetized (MS222) and bled from the caudal vein. In 100% SW, skate plasma (930mOsm/kg) was slightly hyperosmotic to the external medium (922mOsm/kg). Plasma osmolality decreased with seawater dilution, but became increasingly hyperosmotic to the bathing media. The environmental dilutions resulted in significant, but disproportionate changes in plasma Cl, P, Na+, Ca+, Mg+, trimethylamine oxide (TMAO) and urea concentrations. Mean corpuscular [Hb] and milliliter RBC water measurements suggest that skate red cells swelled less at each dilution than predicted for a passive erythrocyte osmometer. Concentrations of the major RBC solutes K+, urea, TMAO and Cl decreased by 8, 25, 5 and 21%, respectively in 80% SW. In 50% SW, K+, urea, TMAO and Cl concentrations decreased by 9, 47, 36 and 15%, respectively. Quantitatively, the other measured intracellular electrolytes (Mg+, Na+, P and Ca+) also exhibited disproportionate changes in concentration. Our results indicate that L. ocellata is a euryhaline elasmobranch that can tolerate significant reduction in the external salinity through the release of both ions and urea from the extracellular compartments while retaining electrolytes at the expense of urea in the intracellular compartment.  相似文献

Spatial sorting is a process that can contribute to microevolutionary change by assembling phenotypes through space, owing to nonrandom dispersal. Here we first build upon and develop the “neutral” version of the spatial sorting hypothesis by arguing that in systems that are not characterized by repeated range expansions, the evolutionary effects of variation in dispersal capacity and assortative mating might not be independent of but interact with natural selection. In addition to generating assortative mating, variation in dispersal capacity together with spatial and temporal variation in quality of spawning area is likely to influence both reproductive success and survival of spawning migrating individuals, and this will contribute to the evolution of dispersal‐enhancing traits. Next, we use a comparative approach to examine whether differences in spawning migration distance among 18 species of freshwater Anguilla eels have evolved in tandem with two dispersal‐favoring traits. In our analyses, we use information on spawning migration distance, body length, and vertebral number that was obtained from the literature, and a published whole mitochondrial DNA‐based phylogeny. Results from comparative analysis of independent contrasts showed that macroevolutionary shifts in body length throughout the phylogeny have been associated with concomitant shifts in spawning migration. Shifts in migration distance were not associated with shifts in number of vertebrae. These findings are consistent with the hypothesis that spatial sorting has contributed to the evolution of more elongated bodies in species with longer spawning migration distances, or resulted in evolution of longer migration distances in species with larger body size. This novel demonstration is important in that it expands the list of ecological settings and hierarchical levels of biological organization for which the spatial sorting hypothesis seems to have predictive power.  相似文献

To examine the relationship between freshwater entry and otolith annular structures, a total of 113 naturally recruited European eels Anguilla anguilla from Lithuania and Latvia that entered fresh water at least once were collected. In some individuals (8·3–11·3%), the first freshwater entry coincided with a dark check that was distinctly different from neighbouring annuli. In most individuals (81·7–84·9%), the first freshwater entry occurred on rings and increments indistinguishable from other annuli. For the remaining individuals (3·8–10%), the first freshwater entry did not correspond to any otolith ring, band or annulus. According to recent evidence, the observed high correspondence between the first freshwater entry and otolith annuli was more likely due to the movement into fresh water during winter when the annulus was deposited, rather than stress resulting from habitat change. Consequently, the age estimation based on otoliths might be less influenced by this habitat change during the yellow eel stage.  相似文献

Thirty migrating silver eels Anguilla anguilla were collected in a river system where algal blooms occurred yearly. Fifty per cent of eel livers were contaminated by microcystin-LR (mean ± s . d . toxin level: 28·1 ± 22·4 ng g−1). Contaminated silver ( v. healthy) eels had lower fish condition. Summary The ultrastructure of chloride cells in the gills of eels kept in artificial sea water and of a control animal kept in fresh water was studied. In addition to glutaraldehydeosmium tetroxide and simple osmium tetroxide fixation, a special method for the demonstration of chloride ions was used (Komnick, 1962, 1963). Based on the principle of silver chloride precipitation in the presence of chloride ions, the procedure showed positive results in the chloride cells of eels adapted to sea water. Smooth-surfaced tubules of the endoplasmic reticulum contained a material of medium to strong electron density, that was often in communication with the plasma membrane. The same material, always of very high density, was present in the intercellular spaces, thus forming conspicuous lines around cells. The silver precipitate was found very often in large quantities in the pits of chloride cells, having thereby the aspect of a secretory product. However, a direct communication between the system of endoplasmic reticulum tubules containing the silver reaction product with the above-mentioned masses of silver chloride was not demonstrated. Schultz (1958) first published an electron micrograph of these cells. Two features, numerous mitochondria and highly developed agranular endoplasmic reticulum, affirmed by all later investigators, have remained the most important criteria for the identification of chloride cells (Kessel and Beams, 1962; Philpott, 1962; Philpott and Copeland, 1963; Rhodin, 1964; Henrikson and Matoltsy, 1968). Kessel and Beams (1962) and Philpott and Copeland (1963) demonstrated pits, or apical cavities (Oberg, 1967) filled with an amorphous granular substance of medium electron density. (Threadgold and Houston, 1964). These cavities are found in animals adapted to sea water only, and correspond to the excretory vesicles described earlier by Copeland (1948). Philpott and Copeland demonstrated numerous vesicles and tubules in the cytoplasm surrounding the apical cavities and opening into them, possibly contributing to their granular material. Several authors attempted to demonstrate a chloride excretory function of chloride cells with the aid of some histochemical reactions. The influences of water temperature and feeding regime on otolith growth in Anguilla japonica glass eels and elvers were investigated using individuals reared at 5, 10, 15, 20, 25 and 30° C and in fed or unfed conditions at salinity 32 after their otoliths were marked with alizarin complexone (ALC). To eliminate the difficulty of observing the edges of otoliths with optical (OM) or scanning electron (SEM) microscopes, three to 10 individuals were sampled from each tank at 10, 20 and 30 days during the experiment and reared for an additional 10 days at 25° C after their otoliths were marked a second time. Otolith growth and the number of increments were measured using both OM and SEM. Most A. japonica commenced feeding after 10 days at 20–30° C or after 20 days at 15° C, but no feeding occurred at 5 and 10° C. No otolith growth occurred at 5 and 10° C except in two individuals with minimal increment deposition at 10° C. Otolith growth was proportional to water temperature within 15–25° C and not different between 25 and 30° C. At 15, 25 and 30° C, the mean otolith growth rate in fed conditions was higher than in unfed conditions. The number of increments per day was significantly different among water temperatures (0·00–0·01 day−1 at 5 and 10° C, 0·43–0·48 day−1 at 15° C and 0·94–1·07 day−1 at 20–30° C). These results indicated that otolith growth in A. japonica glass eels and elvers was affected by temperature and ceased at ≤10° C under experimental conditions. Hence, future studies analysing the otoliths of wild-caught A. japonica glass eels and elvers need to carefully consider the water temperatures potentially experienced by the juveniles in the wild.  相似文献

During their larval leptocephalus phase, newly hatched American eels undergo an extensive oceanic migration from the Sargasso Sea toward coastal and freshwater habitats. Their subsequent metamorphosis into glass eel is accompanied by drastic morphological and physiological changes preceding settlement over a wide geographic range. The main objective of this study was to compare RNA/DNA ratios and condition factor among glass eels in order to test the null hypothesis of no difference in physiological status and metabolic activity of glass eels at the outcome of their oceanic migration. This was achieved by analyzing glass eel samples collected at the mouth of 17 tributaries covering a latitudinal gradient across the species distribution range from Florida to Gaspésie (Québec). Our main observations were (i) a latitudinal increase in mean total length; (ii) a latitudinal variation in mean RNA/DNA ratios, which was best explained by a quadratic model reaching its minimum in the central range of sampling locations; and (iii) a latitudinal variation in Fulton's condition factor, which was best explained by a quadratic model reaching its maximum in the central range of sampling locations. Below we discuss the possible links between latitudinal variation in glass eel physiological status and variable energetic and environmental constraints to oceanic migration as a function of latitudinal distribution.  相似文献

Analyses of the pigmentation stages and the size of glass eels during the arrival period to two northwestern Iberian estuaries (Ríos Nalón and Minho) and comparison of the patterns elucidated in this study with those reported for other geographical locations of the Atlantic and Mediterranean ranges showed nine pigmentation stages ranging from practically transparent to fully pigmented in the two-first locations. Overall, stage VB was predominant but within a broad variance across rivers and seasons. Consistent with previous studies, pigmentation stages tended to increase when the season progressed whilst, for a given individual length, mass tended to be higher during the early months of arrival. Moreover, both mass and condition factor were lower in individuals of advanced stages. Whilst we found no significant differences on glass eels length among pigmentation stages, both mass and condition factor were lower in more pigmented individuals. Given that larger glass eels with better physical condition may reveal greater energy content implying improved upstream migration earlier individuals may be better migrants than latter individuals.  相似文献
