Stem cell therapies in clinical trials: workshop on best practices and the need for harmonization

A workshop addressing regulation of clinical implementation of stem cell therapies preceded the ISSCR 8th Annual Meeting, cosponsored by the International Society for Stem Cell Research, the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine and the International Society for Cellular Therapy.

The 2010 Annual Meeting of the International Society for Stem Cell Research (ISSCR) was held in San Francisco in June with an exciting program covering a wealth of stem cell research from basic science to clinical research.

Improving mesenchymal stem/stromal cell potency and survival: Proceedings from the International Society of Cell Therapy (ISCT) MSC preconference held in May 2018, Palais des Congrès de Montréal,Organized by the ISCT MSC Scientific Committee

As part of the International Society of Cell Therapy (ISCT) 2018 Annual Meeting, the Mesenchymal Stem/Stromal Cell (MSC) committee organized a pre-conference, which covered methods of improving MSC engraftment and potency in vivo and clinical efficacy using MSC potency assays. The speakers examined methods to improve clinical efficacy using MSC potency assays and methods to improve MSC engraftment/homing/potency in vivo. Discussion of patient “responders” versus “non-responders” in clinical trials and working toward ways to identify them were also included.     

A bold step toward 2012: JIPB's 2011 Editorial Board Meeting report

The 2011 JIPB Editorial Board Meeting,which coincided with the 2011 International Symposium on Integrative Plant Biology,was held at Lanzhou University,China,on August 26,2011.Over thirty editors were in attendance for this extremely productive event (Figure 1).The symposium,jointly organized by JIPB,Lanzhou University and four Chinese societies involved in plant science research,the Chinese Society for Cell Biology,Botanical Society of China,Genetics Society of China,and Chinese Society for Plant Physiology,drew nearly 400 participants from all over China and abroad.     

First International Meeting on "Stem Cell Applications in the Craniofacial Region"

During the 1st International Meeting on "Stem Cell Applications in the Craniofacial Region" promoted in Naples (Italy), invited researchers presented theirwork and the most innovative methods regarding stem cells (SCs) and their application to the craniofacial region of the human body. In addition, some researchers showed their case-reports on craniofacial reconstruction using either osteo-distraction or reconstruction surgical methods. The aim of this biannual meeting is to stimulate discussion, improve knowledge and promote scientific collaboration among basic and clinical scientists in the main topics of SC use in therapy. A summary of this meeting is given.     

A report on the International Society for Cell & Gene Therapy 2022 Scientific Signature Series, “Therapeutic advances with native and engineered human extracellular vesicles”

The International Society for Cell & Gene Therapy Scientific Signature Series event “Therapeutic Advances With Native and Engineered Human EVs” took place as part of the International Society for Cell & Gene Therapy 2022 Annual Meeting, held from May 4 to 7, 2022, in San Francisco, California, USA. This was the first signature series event on extracellular vesicles (EVs) and a timely reflection of the growing interest in EVs, including both native and engineered human EVs, for therapeutic applications. The event successfully gathered academic and industrial key opinion leaders to discuss the current state of the art in developing and understanding native and engineered EVs and applying our knowledge toward advancing EV therapeutics. Latest advancements in understanding the mechanisms by which native and engineered EVs exert their therapeutic effects against different diseases in animal models were presented, with some diseases such as psoriasis and osteoarthritis already reaching clinical testing of EVs. The discussion also covered various aspects relevant to advancing the clinical translation of EV therapies, including EV preparation, manufacturing, consistency, site(s) of action, route(s) of administration, and luminal cargo delivery of RNA and other compounds.
