This laboratory study examined the survival of extreme environmental conditions by the White Sea periwinkle Littorina saxatilis. Molluscs from localities with high and low prevalence of Microphallus piriformes, which is a representative of the "pygmaeus" group of digeneans (Microphallidae), were compared. These parasites have not a stage of free-living cercariae in their life cycle. Metacercariae mature inside the sporocysts parasitizing the molluscan host. No negative influence of infection was found on resistance of molluscs to prolonged desiccation and extremes of air and water temperature. On the contrary, significant lower mortality of high infected snails was observed in some experiments. Exposure to fresh water was the only treatment that caused more intensive mortality of high infected snails in comparison with low infected one. The results of the experiments were discussed taking into consideration the available data on mechanisms of molluscan resistance and features in the relationships of "pygmaeus" group sporocysts with the organism of molluscan host. It was emphasized that the wide spread opinion regarding the only negative influence of trematode infection on the resistance of infected molluscs should be revised.  相似文献

Phylogeny is the evolutionary history of a group or the lineage of organisms and is reconstructed based on morphological, molecular and other characteristics. The genealogical relationship of a group of taxa is often expressed as a phylogenetic tree. The difficulty in categorizing the phylogeny is mainly due to the existence of frequent homoplasies that deceive observers. At the present time, cladistic analysis is believed to be one of the most effective methods of reconstructing a phylogenetic tree. Excellent computer program software for phylogenetic analysis is available. As an example, cladistic analysis was applied for nematode genera of the family Acuariidae, and the phylogenetic tree formed was compared with the system used currently. Nematodes in the genera Nippostrongylus and Heligmonoides were also analyzed, and the validity of the reconstructed phylogenetic trees was observed from a zoogeographical point of view. Some of the theories of parasite evolution were briefly reviewed as well. Coevolution of parasites and humans was discussed with special reference to the evolutionary relationship between Enterobius and primates.  相似文献

Parasitic helminths remain major pathogens of both humans and animals throughout the world. The success of helminth infections depends on the capacity of the parasite to counteract host immune responses but also to exploit host-derived signal molecules for its development. Recent progress has been made in the characterization of growth factor receptors of various nematode and flatworm parasites with the demonstration that transforming growth factor beta (TGF-beta), epidermal growth factor (EGF) and insulin receptor signalling pathways are conserved in helminth parasites and potentially implicated in the host-parasite molecular dialogue and parasite development.  相似文献

BackgroundIn Mali, cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) and filariasis are co-endemic. Previous studies in animal models of infection have shown that sand fly saliva enhance infectivity of Leishmania parasites in naïve hosts while saliva-specific adaptive immune responses may protect against cutaneous and visceral leishmaniasis. In contrast, the human immune response to Phlebotomus duboscqi (Pd) saliva, the principal sand fly vector in Mali, was found to be dichotomously polarized with some individuals having a Th1-dominated response and others having a Th2-biased response. We hypothesized that co-infection with filarial parasites may be an underlying factor that modulates the immune response to Pd saliva in endemic regions.Methodology/Principal findingsTo understand which cell types may be responsible for polarizing human responses to sand fly saliva, we investigated the effect of salivary glands (SG) of Pd on human monocytes. To this end, elutriated monocytes were cultured in vitro, alone, or with SG, microfilariae antigen (MF ag) of Brugia malayi, or LPS, a positive control. The mRNA expression of genes involved in inflammatory or regulatory responses was then measured as were cytokines and chemokines associated with these responses. Monocytes of individuals who were not exposed to sand fly bites (mainly North American controls) significantly upregulated the production of IL-6 and CCL4; cytokines that enhance leishmania parasite establishment, in response to SG from Pd or other vector species. This selective inflammatory response was lost in individuals that were exposed to sand fly bites which was not changed by co-infection with filarial parasites. Furthermore, infection with filarial parasites resulted in upregulation of CCL22, a type-2 associated chemokine, both at the mRNA levels and by its observed effect on the frequency of recruited monocytes.Conclusions/SignificanceTogether, our data suggest that SG or recombinant salivary proteins from Pd alter human monocyte function by upregulating selective inflammatory cytokines.  相似文献

Evolutionary relationships in heterospecific associations (parasitoidism, parasitism, commensalism and mutualism) are analysed through a game theory model defined in terms of fitness of hosts and parasites. In front of the game solutions (i.e. ESS) which present a great diversity of evolutionary patterns, we envisage co-evolution between hosts and parasites through the evolution of its two fundamental parameters (i.e. host's resistance and parasite's virulence). 2,3-Dimethoxy-5-methyl-1,4-benzoquinone (Q0), an analogue of ubiquinone, irreversibly paralyses the adult and microfilariae of the cattle filarial parasite Setaria digitata. The same concentration of Q0 that paralyses the microfilariae of S. digitata also paralyses the microfilariae of the human filarial parasite Wuchereria bancrofti within the same duration. Thus the experiments done in the model S. digitata system can well be extended to the human filarial system. A drug at the level of the quinone-centered energy generating system, perhaps an analogue of quinone like Q0, can inactivate the filarial parasites and may prove to be an effective drug to control filariasis.  相似文献

Comparisons were made of in vivo labeled polypeptides from Aedes aegypti strains refractory to either Brugia malayi or Dirofilaria immitis. There does not seem to be a generalized "anti-parasite" polypeptide response that mosquitoes refractory to filarial worm infection produce following bloodfeeding. Instead, it seems that any response produced by these mosquitoes is localized to the tissue in which the filarial parasite develops.  相似文献

Human-parasite relationships have played an essential role in the emergence or re-emergence of some parasitic diseases. These interactions are due to numerous causes. Some are linked to humans (immunodeficiencies due to AIDS among other causes, treatments, nosocomial contaminations, genetic predisposition), others concern the parasite (particular genotypes having modified their parasitic specificity). Several of these causes were predominant in the emergence of parasitoses such as cryptosporidiasis, microsporidioses or, to a certain point, pneumocystosis, the transmission of which has become zoonotic or even anthroponotic, inter-human. Re-emergent diseases (toxoplasmosis, leishmaniasis, giardiasis, strongyloidiasis, scabies) had already been described in human pathology, but their frequency or symptomatology have been drastically modified. In this case also, the unbalanced host-parasite relationship is largely responsible but it can not be dissociated from other causes, especially environmental and nutritional.  相似文献

Some parasites express mucin-like molecules. These have possible roles in attachment and invasion of host cells and in the avoidance of host immune processes. Enzymes of parasite origin might also facilitate infection, either by degrading host mucus barriers or by generating binding sites on host cells. Host mucins have roles in preventing parasite establishment or in parasite expulsion. They, in turn, might be exploited by parasites, either as sources of fuel or binding sites, or as host-finding targets. A new onchocercid species, Loxodontofilaria caprini n. sp. (Filarioidea: Nematoda), found in subcutaneous tissues of 37 (33%) of 112 serows (Noemorhedus crispus) examined in Japan, is described. The female worm had the characteristics of Loxodontofilaria, e.g., the large body size, well-developed esophagus with a shallow buccal cavity, and the long tail with three caudal lappets. The male worm of the new species, which was first described in the genus, had unequal length of spicules, 10 pairs of pre- and post-caudal papillae, and three terminal caudal lappets. Deirids were present in both sexes. Among four species of the genus loxodontofiloria: one from the hippopotamus and three from the Elepantidae, L. caprini n. sp. appears close to L. asiatica Bain, Baker & Chabaud, 1982, a subcutaneous parasite of Elephas indicus in Myanmar (Burma). However, L. caprini n. sp. is distinct from L. asiatica in that the Japanese female worm has an esophagus half as long and the microfilariae also half as long with a coiled posterior. The microfilariae were found in the skin of serows. The new parasite appears to clearly illustrate a major event in the evolution of onchocercids: the host-switching. This might have occurred on the Eurasian continent, where elephantids and the lineage of rupicaprines diversified during the Pliocene-Pleistocene, or in Japan, into which some of these hosts migrated.  相似文献

The recognition of the important role of the polar habitats in global climate changes has awakened great interest in the evolutionary biology of polar organisms. They are exposed to strong environmental constraints, and it is important to understand how they have adapted to cope with these challenges and to what extent adaptations may be upset by current climate changes. We present an introductory overview of the evolution of the Antarctic fish fauna with emphasis on the dominant perciform sub-order Notothenioidei, as well as some specific comments on the biogeography of the three phyletically basal notothenioid families. The wealth of information on the ecology and biodiversity of the species inhabiting high-Antarctic and sub-Antarctic regions provides a necessary framework for better understanding the origin, evolution and adaptation of this unique group of fish. Notothenioidei offer opportunities for identification of the biochemical characters or the physiological traits responsible for thermal adaptation. The availability of phylogenetically related taxa in a wide range of latitudes has allowed to look into the molecular bases of environmentally driven phenotypic gain and loss of function. In the process of cold adaptation, the evolutionary trend of notothenioids has produced unique specialisations, including modification of hematological characteristics, e.g. decreased amounts and multiplicity of hemoglobins. The Antarctic family Channichthyidae (the notothenioid crown group) is devoid of hemoglobin. This loss is related to a single deletional event removing all globin genes with the exception of the inactive 3' end of adult alpha-globin. In reviewing hemoglobin structure, function and phylogeny, the evolution of the fish Root effect is analysed in detail. Adaptation of the oxygen-transport system in notothenioids seems to be based on evolutionary changes involving levels of biological organisation higher than the structure of hemoglobin.  相似文献

The many ways parasites can impact their host species have been the focus of intense study using a range of approaches. A particularly promising but under-used method in this context is experimental evolution, because it allows targeted manipulation of known populations exposed to contrasting conditions. The strong potential of applying this method to the study of insect hosts and their associated parasites is demonstrated by the few available long-term experiments where insects have been exposed to parasites. In this review, we summarize these studies, which have delivered valuable insights into the evolution of resistance in response to parasite pressure, the underlying mechanisms, as well as correlated genetic responses. We further assess findings from relevant artificial selection studies in the interrelated contexts of immunity, life history, and reproduction. In addition, we discuss a number of well-studied Tribolium castaneum-Nosema whitei coevolution experiments in more detail and provide suggestions for research. Specifically, we suggest that future experiments should also be performed using nonmodel hosts and should incorporate contrasting experimental conditions, such as population sizes or envi- ronments. Finally, we expect that adding a third partner, for example, a second parasite or symbiont, to a host-parasite system could strongly impact (co)evolutionary dynamics.  相似文献
