Shallow subtidal macroalgal communities in the North-eastern Atlantic archipelagos (Azores, Madeira, Canaries and Cape Verde) were studied in order to identify their spatial organization patterns and the main drivers of change. Fifteen islands and 145 sites across 15º of latitude and 2850 km were sampled. We found high spatial variability across the scales considered (archipelago, island and site). The structure of macroalgal communities differed among archipelagos, except between Madeira and the Canaries, which were similar. Across a latitudinal gradient, macroalgal communities in the Azores were clearly separated from the other archipelagos; communities in Madeira and the Canaries occupied an intermediate position, while those in Cape Verde appeared at the opposite end of the gradient. In the Azores, species with warm-temperate affinities dominated communities. Cape Verde communities were, in contrast, dominated by tropical taxa, whereas in the subtropical Canaries and Madeira there was a mixture of species with colder and warmer affinities. Apart from crustose coralline algae, the Dictyotales were the group with greatest cover; larger and longer-lived species were progressively replaced by short-lived species along a latitudinal gradient from north to south. The perennial species Zonaria tournefortii dominated the sea-bottom in the Azores, the semi-perennial Lophophora variegata in the Canaries, the filamentous algae in Madeira and the ephemeral Dictyota dichotoma in Cape Verde. We hypothesized that the differences among archipelagos could be explained by synergies between temperature and herbivory, which increased in diversity southwards, especially in Cape Verde. This was supported by the predominance of non-crustose macroalgae in the Azores and of crustose macroalgae in Cape Verde, as would be predicted from the greater herbivore activity. At the scale of islands and sites, the same set of environmental variables drove differences in macroalgal community structure across all the Macaronesian archipelagos.  相似文献

The Argentine ant, Linepithema humile, originally from South America, is now a major pest in many parts of the world with Mediterranean-like climates. Earlier research indicated that southwestern European L. humile populations are segregated into two distinct supercolonies, the ‘Main’ supercolony extending through Portugal, Spain, southern France, and Italy, and the ‘Catalonian’ supercolony in eastern Spain. Both supercolonies are unicolonial, with workers showing no aggression towards members of the same supercolony, but severe aggression towards members of the other supercolony. Here we evaluated the behavioral relationships among non-native L. humile populations on the Macaronesian islands of Madeira and the Azores and non-native populations in southwestern Europe. We conducted aggression assays among L. humile workers from Madeira, the Azores, and the two southwestern European supercolonies. We found no aggressive interactions among any combination of workers from Madeira, the Azores, and the Main supercolony. However, workers from Madeira and the Azores always fought aggressively with workers from the Catalonian supercolony. Thus, the populations of L. humile in Madeira and the Azores appear to be unicolonial and act as if they belong to the Main supercolony of southwestern Europe. This set of geographically separated but mutually compatible supercolonies, which we term a ‘metacolony,’ appears to descend from one supercolony. Historical evidence suggests that the first L. humile population in the greater Mediterranean region was established in Madeira and that propagules from the dominant supercolony in Madeira gave rise to the dominant supercolonies in to other parts of the region.  相似文献

The taxonomy and nomenclature of the genus Huperzia Bernh. in the Azores and Madeira have been reviewed. Plants collected in the Azores and Madeira were characterized morphologically. The independence between two endemic species common to Madeira and the Azores Islands –Huperzia suberecta (Lowe) Tardieu and Huperzia dentata (Herter) Holub – is clearly shown. A clear‐cut morphological separation between these taxa and Huperzia selago (L.) Dimethylsulfoniopropionate (DMSP) production by psychrophilic diatom strains, Chaetoceros sp., Navicula sp., and Nitzschia sp., were experimentally analyzed. All strains showed rapid growth (0.3–0.5 d?1) under cold culture conditions (1.7°C). DMSP concentrations (both as particulate, DMSPp, and dissolved, DMSPd) were negligible in cultures of Chaetoceros sp., whereas those for Navicula sp. and Nitzschia sp. increased toward the end of the 56‐day experiments. The ratio of DMSPp:chl a of the latter two species was approximately 5 in the early exponential growth phase and decreased slightly toward the early stationary phase. During the stationary phase, when chl a and fluorescence remained constant, the ratios in both species increased linearly by up to approximately 6.5 times the value at the start of the stationary phase. This growth‐related DMSP production by diatoms may result in the low concentrations of DMSPp observed in the early stage of diatom blooms under natural conditions.  相似文献

The surface distribution of netphytoplankton (>20 m) in the Atlantic sector of the Southern Ocean was investigated along two transects during early and late austral summer 1990/91. Sampling was under-taken at intervals of 60 of latitude between 34° and 70°S for the analysis of nutrients and for the identification and enumeration of netphytoplankton. Peaks in total diatom abundances were recorded at the Antarctic Polar Front (APF), in the vicinity of the South Sand wich Islands, in the marginal ice zone and in the neritic waters of the Atlantic sector of Antarctica. Cluster analysis indicates the existence of two major zones between Southern Africa and Antarctica. Diatom abundance increased south of the Antarctic Polar From along both transects, which can be partially explained by gradients of silicate concentration. Small chain-forming species (e.g. Fragilariopsis kerguelensis and Nitzschia lineata) dominated the diatom assemblages in early summer, while larger species, such as Rhizosolenia hebetata f. semispina and Corethron criophilum, dominated late summer diatom assemblages. The predominance of typically ice-associated forms in early summer suggests that the release of epontic cells during ice melt provides the initial inoculum for the netphytoplankton biomass. These small diatoms are subsequently replaced by larger species.  相似文献

The determination of the history and causes of recent eutrophication and intensified thermal stratification in Lake Victoria is still hampered by the sparsity of paleolimnologic coverage of the enormous lake. Five new diatom records from Ugandan waters now show that a transition from Aulacoseira-dominated planktonic assemblages to those dominated by long Nitzschia spp., occurred in northern coastal sites from the mid-1970s to mid-1980s. Similar transitions developed from the late 1960s to early 1970s offshore and from the 1940s to early 1950s along the Kenyan coast, suggesting a time-transgressive process. These changes are not readily attributable to the trophic effects of Nile perch population growth during the early 1980s, but more likely reflect responses to long-term nutrient enrichment and climatic instability in the region. The diversity of planktonic diatom communities has declined dramatically, and a namesake variety of Aulacoseira nyassensis may now be nearly extirpated. Although local phytoplankton communities varied considerably in the past, the current domination of diatom assemblages by Nitzschia is apparently unprecedented in the 15,000-year history of Lake Victoria.  相似文献

In this study, landmark-based geometric morphometric methods were applied to evaluate the possible existence of different bluemouth, Helicolenus dactylopterus (Delaroche, 1809), populations in the NE Atlantic. Fish were obtained from commercial landings in Azores, Madeira, and Peniche (mainland Portugal). Samples from a research survey along the Galician coast (Spain) were also included in this study. A generalized procrustes analysis was done to remove non-shape variation. Then, the obtained shape variables were statistically adjusted to eliminate allometry and permit a comparative analysis of the samples. The discriminant analysis performed to test the homogeneity of the data set regarding sex revealed no shape differences between males and females within the four areas under study. The body shapes of bluemouth differed significantly among the four areas using Procrustes distances (P < 0.01). In this study, a considerable morphological heterogeneity within the Azores group was observed, which could reflect a substructure of the bluemouth population within this area. According to our results, bluemouth from Galicia and Peniche seem to be relatively well separated from each other, despite both areas are relatively close geographically. Bluemouth from Madeira was well differentiated from the rest of locations and presented the highest correct classification rate in the discriminant analysis. In conclusion, morphological differences suggest that different bluemouth populations exist in the NE Atlantic, but an integrated approach, using different methods, would be needed to confirm the population structure of this species.  相似文献

Abstract

Conocephalum salebrosum Szweykowski, Buczkowska & Odrzykoski, a hygrophytic species, is newly reported for several localities in continental Portugal as well as in Madeira and Azores Islands. Information from studied specimens, and a map showing the actual distribution of this species and its closely related species, C. conicum (L.) Dumort., are provided as the basis for a discussion on the chorology and ecological ranges of both species. Additionally, a model of the potential distribution for both species in continental territory is developed through the Maximum Entropy Modelling technique, followed by an explanation of an hypothesis on the preferences of each species of Conocephalum known in this territory.  相似文献

We analyzed the genetic structure and relationships of house mouse (Mus musculus) populations in the remote Atlantic archipelago of the Azores using nuclear sequences and microsatellites. We typed Btk and Zfy2 to confirm that the subspecies Mus musculus domesticus was the predominant genome in the archipelago. Nineteen microsatellite loci (one per autosome) were typed in a total of 380 individuals from all nine Azorean islands, the neighbouring Madeiran archipelago (Madeira and Porto Santo islands), and mainland Portugal. Levels of heterozygosity were high on the islands, arguing against population bottlenecking. The Azorean house mouse populations were differentiated from the Portuguese and Madeiran populations and no evidence of recent migration between the three was obtained. Within the Azores, the Eastern, Western, and Central island groups tended to act as separate genetic units for house mice, with some exceptions. In particular, there was evidence of recent migration events among islands of the Central island group, whose populations were relatively undifferentiated. Humans have introduced many species onto remote oceanic islands. The house mouse (Mus musculus) is a human commensal and has consequently been transported to oceanic islands around the globe as an accidental stowaway. The history of these introductions can tell us not only about the mice themselves but also about the people that transported them. Following a phylogeographic approach, we used mitochondrial D‐loop sequence variation (within an 849‐ to 864‐bp fragment) to study house mouse colonization of the Azores. A total of 239 sequences were obtained from all nine islands, and interpretation was helped by previously published Iberian sequences and 66 newly generated Spanish sequences. A Bayesian analysis revealed presence in the Azores of most of the D‐loop clades previously described in the domesticus subspecies of the house mouse, suggesting a complex colonization history of the archipelago as a whole from multiple geographical origins, but much less heterogeneity (often single colonization?) within islands. The expected historical link with mainland Portugal was reflected in the pattern of D‐loop variation of some of the islands but not all. A more unexpected association with a distant North European source area was also detected in three islands, possibly reflecting human contact with the Azores prior to the 15th century discovery by Portuguese mariners. Widening the scope to colonization of the Macaronesian islands as a whole, human linkages between the Azores, Madeira, the Canaries, Portugal and Spain were revealed through the sharing of mouse sequences between these areas. From these and other data, we suggest mouse studies may help resolve historical uncertainties relating to the ‘Age of Discovery’.  相似文献

The paraphyletic diatom genus Nitzschia comprises over 1000 morphologically distinct pennate taxa, known from the benthos and plankton of freshwater, brackish, and marine environments. The principal diagnostic characters for delimitation of Nitzschia species include valve shape, the position and structure of the raphe, presence/absence and shape of the proximal raphe endings and terminal raphe fissures, areola structure, and specific morphometric features such as cell size, and stria and fibula density. In this study, we isolated 12 diatom strains into culture from samples collected at the surface or greater depths of the southeastern Adriatic Sea. Morphological analyses included LM, SEM, and TEM observations, which, along with specific morphometric features, allowed us to distinguish three new Nitzschia species. These findings were congruent with the results of phylogenetic analyses performed on nuclear‐encoded SSU (18S) rDNA and chloroplast‐encoded rbcL and psbC genes. One of the new species (Nitzschia dalmatica sp. nov.) formed a lineage within a clade of Bacillariaceae containing members of the Nitzschia sect. Dubiae, which was sister to Psammodictyon. A second lineage was part of a novel clade that is significantly distinct from other Nitzschia species sequenced so far and includes Nitzschia adhaerens sp. nov. and N. cf. adhaerens. A further new species was found, Nitzschia inordinata sp. nov., which appeared as the sister group to the N. adhaerens clade and the conopeoid Nitzschia species in our phylogenetic trees. Our findings contribute to the overall diversity of genus Nitzschia, especially in identifying some deep branches within the Bacillariaceae, and highlight under‐scoring of this genus in marine plankton.  相似文献

Different sources of nitrogen pose diverse effects to algal community, but the mechanism of inhibitory effects of nitrogen sources on freshwater diatoms is not fully understood. The purpose of this study was to compare biomass, photosynthetic activity, and morphological structure of three common freshwater diatoms (Cyclotella meneghiniana, Nitzschia sp., and Gomphonema parvulum) under different nitrogen sources (NO3 ? or NH4 +). The sorption characteristic of each diatom was investigated, and chlorophyll a (Chl-a) content and oxygen evolution rate were analyzed to investigate stress of different nitrogen sources on each diatom in the batch experiments. Ammonium lowered the growth rate of C. meneghiniana and Nitzschia sp. when it was supplied in addition to growth-saturating nitrate concentrations, suggesting a combined effect of inhibition of nitrate uptake and direct ammonium stress. Oxygen evolution rate of Nitzschia sp. showed that the direct ammonium stress on the photosynthetic activity can be alleviated by coexistence of nitrate in the nitrogen enriched treatment, but not for C. meneghiniana and G. parvulum, which may be caused by a different nitrate transporter system within algal cells. Transmission electron microscopy was used to assess the toxicity of ammonium on ultrastructural chloroplast of each diatom. Ultrastructural changes in chloroplasts showed undefined electron-dense granules and lipid droplets, but the membrane integrity of cell was maintained, suggesting an adaptation to adjustment to ammonia stress. Results showed that Cyclotella meneghiniana and Nitzschia sp. were more sensitive to ammonium stress than Gomphonema parvulum on growth, but the mechanism remains unclear.  相似文献

Abstract

Diatoms, which are early autotrophic colonisers, are an important constituent of the biofouling community in the marine environment. The effects of substratum and temporal variations on the fouling diatom community structure in a monsoon-influenced tropical estuary were studied. Fibreglass and glass coupons were exposed every month for a period of 4 days and the diatom population sampled at 24 h intervals, over a period of 14 months. The planktonic diatom community structure differed from the biofilm community. Pennate diatoms dominated the biofilms whilst centric diatoms were dominant in the water column. Among the biofilm diatoms, species belonging to the genera Navicula, Amphora, Nitzschia, Pleurosigma and Thalassionema were dominant. On certain occasions, the influence of planktonic blooms was also seen on the biofilm community. A comparative study of biofilms formed on the two substrata revealed significant differences in density and diversity. However species composition was almost constant. In addition to substratum variations, the biofilm diatom community structure also showed significant seasonal variations, which were attributed to physico-chemical and biological changes in both the water and substratum. Temporal variations in the tychopelagic diatoms of the water were also observed to exert an influence on the biofilm diatom community. Variations in diatom communities may determine the functional ecosystem of the benthic environment.  相似文献

Biological samples of free-ranging dolphins are increasingly used to gain information on population structure and ecology. In small cetaceans, the gender of individuals usually cannot be determined at sea, and population sex ratio has to be inferred indirectly. We used molecular sexing to determine the gender of 340 biopsy samples of bottlenose dolphins, Tursiops truncatus, spotted dolphins, Stenella frontalis, and common dolphins, Delphinus delphis, collected around the Azores and Madeira. Sex ratio was globally skewed in favor of males, and differed between species and archipelagos. Skew was probably influenced by the selectivity of biopsy collectors and seasonal or year-round predominance of males in natural populations. Skew was also influenced by sampling duration and intensity. In the Azores, when several samples were successively collected within the same group, the proportion of female samples decreased as a function of sample order. This trend indicated a tendency for females to increasingly avoid the boat while samples were being collected. It showed that males and females reacted differently to the perturbation caused by the biopsy sampling process (i.e., sample collection and driving style).  相似文献

Manometric studies were conducted on Pterocladia capillacea, Gelidium latifolium and Gelidium spinulosum from the Azores, Portugal to determine optimal values of temperature, light and salinity for growth. Physiological responses were considered in relation to vertical distribution patterns of these species commonly observed throughout the Azores. Optimal parameters for the growth of Pterocladia capillacea, Gelidium latifolium and G. spinulosum were 17 to 25 °C, a photon flux density between 200 and 300 µmol m–2 s–1 and salinities of 25 to 35.  相似文献

To better determine the ecological role of motility in pennate diatoms, we quantitatively characterized several motility and adhesion properties of four species of motile pennate diatoms (Craticula sp., Pinnularia sp., Nitzschia sp., and Stauroneis sp.) isolated from the same freshwater pond. Using computer-assisted video microscopy, we measured speed, size/shape, functional adhesion, path curvature, and light sensitivity for these species, each of which shows a distinctive set of motile behaviors. The average speeds of Stauroneis, Pinnularia, Nitzschia, and Craticula cells are 4.6, 5.3, 10.4, and 10.0 μm · s?1, respectively. Craticula and Nitzschia cells move in a relatively straight path (<4 degrees rotation per 100 μm movement), Stauroneis exhibits minor rotation (about 7 degrees per 100 μm movement), and Pinnularia rotates considerably during movement (about 22 degrees per 100 μm moved). Functional adhesion (as measured by the release rate of attached cells from the underside of an inverted coverslip) shows a half time for cell release of approximately 50 min for Craticula, 192 min for Pinnularia, and >1 day for Nitzschia and Stauroneis. Direction reversal at light/dark boundaries, which appears to be the main contributor to diatom Phototaxis, is most responsive for Craticula, Pinnularia, and Nitzschia at wavelengths around 500 nm. Craticula and Nitzschia cells are the most sensitive in the photophobic response, with over 60% of these cells responding to a 30-1x light/dark boundary at 500 nm, whereas Pinnularia cells are only moderately responsive at this irradiance, showing a maximal response of approximately 30% of cells at 450 nm. Stauroneis cells, in contrast, had a maximal photosensitive response at 700 nm, suggesting that this cell type may use a different response mechanism than the other three cell types. In addition, Craticula and Pinnularia show a net movement out of the light spot when illuminated at 650 nm, whereas Stauroneis shows a net movement out of the light spot when illuminated at 450 nm. Such quantitative characterizations of species-specific responses to environmental stimuli should give us a firm foundation for future studies analyzing the behavior of interspecies diatom competition for limited light or nutrient resources.  相似文献

Quality assurance and control (QA/QC) is significant for the scientific drilling in order to accurately characterize physical, geochemical, and biological properties in the cored deep subseafloor materials. To explore the deep subseafloor life and its biosphere, identification and control of microbial contamination in drilling cores is critical for highly sensitive molecular analyses as well as cultivations, especially for the evaluation of low biomass and/or extremely harsh deep environments. Here we report some microbiological characteristics of circulation mud fluids before and after the first riser drilling operation by the newly constructed deep-earth research vessel Chikyu. During the Chikyu shakedown expedition CK06-06 in 2006, we used the riser system for drilling 547 to 647 meter below the seafloor into the sediments offshore the Shimokita Peninsula of Japan. Cultivation experiments showed that no microbial growth was observed in the precirculation mud fluid, while 4 × 105 colonies per 1 ml were observed in the postcirculation mud fluid; all cultured bacterial isolates were found to be Halomonas. Using culture-independent molecular analysis, 16S rRNA gene sequences of Xanthomonas, which is used for industrial production of the mud fluid viscosifier “xanthan gum”, were predominantly detected in the precirculation mud fluid, while Halomonas sequences consistently dominated the clone library constructed from the postcirculation mud fluid. Archaeal 16S rRNA genes were amplified only from the postcirculation mud fluid; these archaeal clone sequences were affiliated to the Marine Crenarchaeota Group I (MGI), Marine Euryarchaeota Group II (MGII), Miscellaneous Crenarchaeotic Group (MCG), South African Gold Mine Euryarchaeotic Group (SAGMEG), Soil Group, and Methanococcus aeolicus. These results suggest that Halomonas contaminated and grew in the tank of circulation mud fluids, and other indigenous deep subseafloor microbial components, especially deep subsurface archaea, were also mixed into the post-circulation mud fluid.  相似文献

Aim Bats communicate by emitting social calls, and these often elicit reactions in conspecifics. Many such vocalizations are species‐specific so that unambiguous signals can be transmitted and interpreted by conspecifics. In species‐rich assemblages, evolutionary pressures might prompt interspecific diversification of call structure so that communication with heterospecifics is avoided. In species‐poor island communities, where no risk of miscommunication occurs, stabilizing selection should prevail and preserve call structure and function. Call structure in island bats might be inherited from colonizers from the mainland and be maintained with little change in the absence of selection from heterospecifics. To test this hypothesis we studied Pipistrellus maderensis, an insular taxon occurring on the Madeira Archipelago, the Canary Islands and the Azores. It is closely related to one of the most widespread European pipistrelles, Pipistrellus kuhlii. Pipistrellus maderensis most probably evolved from a common ancestor shared with P. kuhlii, or from founders of that taxon that colonized the islands. We hypothesized that on Madeira Island, where no risk of ambiguous communication with heterospecifics exists, the structure and function of social calls should have been preserved by stabilizing selection. Echolocation calls, subject to different selection pressures, may instead show more pronounced differences between P. maderensis and P. kuhlii. Location Madeira Island (Portugal, Atlantic Ocean), central and southern Italy. Methods We recorded social and echolocation calls from allopatric populations of the two pipistrelles and explored interspecific differences in time and frequency characteristics. We also conducted playback experiments by broadcasting recordings of social calls from P. kuhlii and P. maderensis (taken respectively in peninsular Italy and on Madeira) and monitoring the bats’ responses. Results Social call structure showed a strong similarity between species, whereas echolocation calls were markedly different and exhibited a mean divergence of over 6 kHz in their frequency of maximum energy. On Madeira, P. maderensis significantly reduced flight activity when we broadcast P. kuhlii signals, as did P. kuhlii in Italy in response to P. maderensis calls. Main conclusions Reliable interpretation of social calls provides benefits to both the signaller and the receiver because signals help to optimize food exploitation at foraging sites. In the absence of closely related species that can emit similar calls, this advantage may have acted as a strong evolutionary pressure, stabilizing social call structure in P. maderensis in insular ecosystems with limited foraging resources.  相似文献

Many experiments utilize static immersion tests to evaluate the performance of ship hull coatings. These provide valuable data; however, they do not accurately represent the conditions both the hull and fouling organisms encounter while a ship is underway. This study investigated the effect of static and dynamic immersion on the adhesion and settlement of diatoms to one antifouling coating (BRA 640), four fouling-release coatings (Intersleek® 700, Intersleek® 900, Hempasil X3, and Dow Corning 3140) and one standard surface (Intergard® 240 Epoxy). Differences in community composition were observed between the static and dynamic treatments. Achnanthes longipes was present on all coatings under static immersion, but was not present under dynamic immersion. This was also found for diatoms in the genera Bacillaria and Gyrosigma. Melosira moniformis was the only diatom present under dynamic conditions, but not static conditions. Several common fouling diatom genera were present on panels regardless of treatment: Amphora, Cocconeis, Entomoneis Cylindrotheca, Licmophora, Navicula, Nitzschia, Plagiotropis, and Synedra. Biofilm adhesion, diatom abundance and diatom diversity were found to be significantly different between static and dynamic treatments; however, the difference was dependent on coating and sampling date. Several coatings (Epoxy, DC 3140 and IS 700) had significantly higher biofilm adhesion on dynamically treated panels on at least one of the four sampling dates, while all coatings had significantly higher diatom abundance on at least one sampling date. Diversity was significantly greater on static panels than dynamic panels for Epoxy, IS 700 and HX3 at least once during the sampling period. The results demonstrate how hydrodynamic stress will significantly influence the microfouling community. Dynamic immersion testing is required to fully understand how antifouling surfaces will respond to biofilm formation when subjected to the stresses experienced by a ship underway.  相似文献

This paper provides comparative information on the reproductive biology of the alfonsino, Beryx splendens Lowe, 1834, species with commercial interest in the Azores, Madeira and the Canary Islands. A total of 846 individuals from Azores (14.0–42.0 cm fork length), 621 from Madeira (17.2–50.0 cm fork length) and 643 from the Canaries (18.2–38.9 cm fork length) were used for the study. The alfonsino is gonochoric with no evidence of sexual dimorphism. Females are more abundant than males; this dominance probably reflects certain differences in the spatial distribution and/or the catchability of males and females in the Macaronesian archipelagos. The spawning season was distinct for the three Macaronesian areas, with an observed North–South variation in the reproductive period: September–March in the Azores, March–June in Madeira and July–September in the Canary Islands. The size at sexual maturity estimated for Madeira and the Canary Islands is similar (32 and 30 cm fork length, respectively), while for the Azores it is reached at smaller length (23 cm fork length). The differences observed in the size at sexual maturity can be explained by the different exploitation levels in each archipelago. Life‐history parameters of the alfonsino suggest that this species has a specialistic life‐history strategy and fisheries based on this species are more susceptible to growth overfishing and population depletion.  相似文献
