Reduced light availability for benthic primary producers as a result of anthropogenic activities may be an important driver of change in coastal seas. However, our knowledge of the minimum light requirements for benthic macroalgae limits our understanding of how these changes may affect primary productivity and the functioning of coastal ecosystems. This knowledge gap is particularly acute in deeper water, where the impacts of increased light attenuation will be most severe. We examined the minimum light requirements of Anotrichium crinitum, which dominates near the maximum depth limit for macroalgae throughout New Zealand and Southern Australia, and is a functional analog of rhodophyte macroalgae in temperate low‐light (deep‐water) habitats throughout the world. These data show that A. crinitum is a shade‐adapted seaweed with modest light requirements for the initiation of net photosynthesis (1.49–2.25 μmol photons · m?2 · s?1) and growth (0.12–0.19 mol photons · m?2 · d?1). A. crinitum maintains high photosynthetic efficiency and pigment content and a low C:N ratio throughout the year and can maintain biomass under sub‐compensation (critical) light levels for at least 5 d. Nevertheless, in situ photon flux is less than the minimum light requirement for A. crinitum on at least 103 d per annum and is rarely sufficient to saturate growth. These findings reinforce the importance of understanding the physiological response of macroalgae at the extremes of environmental gradients and highlight the need to establish minimum thresholds that modification of the subtidal light environment should not cross.  相似文献

The diffuse attenuation coefficient, K (m− 1), is a measure of the effective attenuation of light in the water column. It characterizes water clarity and is used as a proxy for water quality. Mapping of shallow water benthic habitats using optical means, including daytime visible satellite imagery, requires knowledge of K to correct for water column effects such as light absorption and scattering. Traditionally, K is derived from imagery using a priori knowledge of bottom types at different depths and specific locations, and assuming that light attenuates exponentially with depth. This technique is applied to three Landsat 7 satellite images (February, May, and July 2000) from the Florida Keys Reef Tract between Key Largo and Key West. Interpolated depth data, initially from NOAA vector chart data, with uncertainties of ±0.5 m, were draped over 30 m spatial resolution Landsat satellite imagery. K was derived for 27 sites where bright sand could be observed at depths between 3 and 20 m. The blue and green bands (Landsat bands 1 and 2 at 450–520 nm and 520–600 nm, respectively) provided K values consistent with time and location. Average K values for bands 1 and 2, respectively, were 0.029 and 0.043 m− 1 (Lower Keys), 0.050 and 0.072 m− 1 (Middle Keys), and 0.063 and 0.082 m− 1 (Upper Keys). The red band (band 3, 630–690 nm) provided more ambiguous and erroneous results with several negative K values, attributed primarily to three factors use of a simple atmospheric correction, the high absorption and rapid attenuation of red light in water, and low radiometric sensitivity of the Landsat ETM + sensor. Despite the fact that these observations were a snapshot in time, trends were observed for the Upper, Middle, and Lower Keys, possibly due to the influence of more turbid Florida Bay waters.  相似文献

Abstract

The concentration of chlorophyll a, b, and total chlorophyll have been monitored on a seasonal basis in Brachythecium rutabulum. Total chlorophyll increases during summer full canopy conditions from 1.70 mg chl g?1 on 8 May to 11.1 mg chl g?1 on 11 October. Photosynthetic-illumination curves show that during this period light saturation declines from 200 μmol m?2s?1 to 30 μmol m?2s?1 by 6 July, and light compensation falls dramatically from 65 μmol m?2s?1 to 4 μmol m?2s?1. The data also appear to support the conclusion that there is concurrently an increase in the density of photosynthetic units by the end of September.  相似文献

The amount of light plants can tolerate during different phases of ontogenesis remains largely unknown. This was addressed here employing a novel methodology that uses the coefficient of photochemical quenching (qP) to assess the intactness of photosystem II reaction centres. Fluorescence quenching coefficients, total chlorophyll content and concentration of anthocyanins were determined weekly during the juvenile, adult, reproductive and senescent phases of plant ontogenesis. This enabled quantification of the protective effectiveness of non‐photochemical fluorescence quenching (NPQ) and determination of light tolerance. The light intensity that caused photoinhibition in 50% of leaf population increased from ~70 μmol m?2 s?1, for 1‐week‐old seedlings, to a maximum of 1385 μmol m?2 s?1 for 8‐week‐old plants. After 8 weeks, the tolerated light intensity started to gradually decline, becoming only 332 μmol m?2 s?1 for 13‐week‐old plants. The dependency of light tolerance on plant age was well‐related to the amplitude of protective NPQ (pNPQ) and the electron transport rates (ETRs). Light tolerance did not, however, show a similar trend to chlorophyll a/b ratios and content of anthocyanins. Our data suggest that pNPQ is crucial in defining the capability of high light tolerance by Arabidopsis plants during ontogenesis.  相似文献

Phytochrome modulation of blue-light-induced phototropism   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Red light enhances hypocotyl phototropism toward unilateral blue light through a phytochrome‐mediated response. This study demonstrates how the phytochromes modulate blue‐light‐induced phototropism in the absence of a red light pre‐treatment. It was found that phytochromes A, B, and D have conditionally overlapping functions in the promotion of blue‐light‐induced phototropism. Under very low blue light intensities (0.01 µmol m?2 s?1) phyA activity is necessary for the progression of a normal phototropic response, whereas above 1.0 µmol m?1 s?2 phyB and phyD have functional redundancy with phyA to promote phototropism. PhyA also contributes to attenuation of phototropism under high fluence rates of unilateral blue light, which was previously shown to be dependent on the phototropins and cryptochromes. From these results, it appears that phytochromes are required to develop a robust phototropic response under low fluence rates, whereas under high irradiances where phototropism may be less important, phyA suppresses phototropism.  相似文献

Changes in light quantity and quality cause structural changes within the thylakoid membrane; long‐term responses have been described for so‐called ‘sun’ and ‘shade’ leaves. Many leaves, however, experience changes in irradiance on a time scale of minutes due to self‐shading and sun flecks. In this study, mature, attached spinach leaves were grown at 300 µmol photons m?2 s?1 then rapidly switched to a different light treatment. The treatment irradiances were 10, 800 or 1500 µmol m?2 s?1 for 10 min, or 10 or 20 min of self‐shading (about 10 µmol m?2 s?1). Image analysis of transmission electron micrographs revealed that a 10 min switch to a lower light intensity increased grana size and number per chloroplast profile by 10–20%. Returning the leaves to 300 µmol m?2 s?1 for 10 min reversed the phenomenon. Chlorophyll fluorescence measurements of detached, intact leaves at 77 K were suggestive of a transition from state 2 to state 1 upon shading. Diurnal ultrastructural measurements of granal size and number did not reveal a significant net change in ultrastructure over the time scale of hours. It is concluded that spinach chloroplasts can alter the degree of thylakoid appression in response to irradiance changes on a time scale of minutes. These ultrastructural responses are caused by biochemical and biophysical adjustments within the thylakoid membrane that serve to maximize photosynthesis and minimize photo‐inhibition under rapidly fluctuating light environments.  相似文献

The Key Largo woodrat is an endangered rodent endemic to the island of Key Largo in the Florida Keys. After several reports documented a steep decline in the population, the US Fish and Wildlife Service developed a recovery plan, including captive breeding and reintroduction. Captive breeding efforts were to be focused on providing animals for future reintroduction to protected areas on Key Largo. However, little was known about the husbandry needs or reproductive behavior of this elusive nocturnal species. In 2005, Disney's Animal Kingdom® received 11 animals and began to systematically investigate methods of breeding Key Largo woodrats. Since the program's inception, 30 pups have been born and successfully parent reared. In this report, we describe some of the husbandry techniques that have contributed to the success of the Key Largo woodrat captive breeding program at Disney's Animal Kingdom®. The results obtained may be of use to other facilities maintaining woodrats and other rodent species. Zoo Biol 30:318–327, 2011. © 2010 Wiley‐Liss, Inc.  相似文献

Chara braunii is distributed worldwide and is the most common charalean species in Japan. This species is monoecious and produces numerous sets of sex organs, each of which consists of one antheridium and one oogonium, under laboratory culture conditions. In this study, we report that light intensity strongly affected the vegetative phase and sexual reproductive phase of this species. Under high‐light conditions (70.0 μmol photons m?2 s?1), thalli grew but did not form reproductive organs. Under a low‐light intensity (10.0 μmol photons m?2 s?1), algal bodies formed many reproductive organs. In addition, antheridia without the corresponding oogonia (lone antheridia) were observed under low‐light conditions. The absence of oogonium primordia adjacent to the lone antheridium was confirmed by several microscopic approaches. The addition of liquid fertilizer increased the total number of sex organs and growth; however, the number of lone antheridia decreased with increasing fertilizer concentrations. Exogenously applied gibberellin did not affect the number of lone antheridia. These results suggest that regulatory mechanisms for the appropriate allocation of resources exist in this alga, similar to those reported in some land plants.  相似文献

Atlantic tidal fluctuations drive pressure head variations in shallow offshore wells drilled into the limestone subsurface on both the Florida Bay and Atlantic sides of Key Largo, Florida, USA. We tested the hypothesis that these pressure head variations influence groundwater flow and that flux rate variability is associated with tidal variability. We used an automated Rn monitor to make continuous measurements of 222Rn, a natural tracer of groundwater discharge, in Florida Bay waters. We also deployed three types of seepage meters, including an automated heat pulse meter to collect a continuous record of seepage from the sediments. Drum type seepage meters inserted into soft sediments and fiberglass meters cemented to the rocky bay floor were utilized with pre-filled 4-l bag collectors, and monitored on an hourly basis. Maximum Rn inventories in Florida Bay waters were associated with high tide on the Atlantic side of the island. Modeling of the Rn variation indicated variable groundwater discharge rates with maximum flux occurring at high Atlantic tide. Seepage meter results in Florida Bay were consistent with 222Rn modeling. Florida Bay seepage meter rates showed positive correlation with Atlantic tide, meter 1, r?=?0.63, n?=?12, p?<?0.025 and meter 2, r?=?0.67, n?=?12, p?<?0.025. A seepage meter offshore of the Atlantic side of Key Largo exhibited rates that were inversely correlated with Atlantic tide (r?=?0.87, n?=?9, p?<?0.005) showing negative rates when the tide was high, and positive rates when the tide was low. Overall, our results are consistent with the hypothesis of Reich et al. (2002), that pressure head variations driven by Atlantic tide influence groundwater seepage rate variability in Florida Bay off Key Largo. Effectively, as proposed by Reich et al. (2002), Key Largo functions as a semi-permeable dam separating Florida Bay and the Atlantic Ocean.  相似文献

Light effect on cultures of microalgae has been studied mainly on single species cultures. Cyanobacteria have photosynthetic pigments that can capture photons of wavelengths not available to chlorophylls. A native Louisiana microalgae (Chlorella vulgaris ) and cyanobacteria (Leptolyngbya sp.) co‐culture was used to study the effects of light quality (blue–467 nm, green–522 nm, red–640 nm and white–narrow peak at 450 nm and a broad range with a peak at 550 nm) at two irradiance levels (80 and 400 μmol m?2 s?1) on the growth, species composition, biomass productivity, lipid content and chlorophyll‐a production. The co‐culture shifted from a microalgae dominant culture to a cyanobacteria culture at 80 μmol m?2 s?1. The highest growth for the cyanobacteria was observed at 80 μmol μmol m?2 s?1 and for the microalgae at 400 μmol m?2 s?1. Red light at 400 μmol m?2 s?1 had the highest growth rate (0.41 d?1), biomass (913 mg L?1) and biomass productivity (95 mg L?1 d?1). Lipid content was similar between all light colors. Green light had the highest chlorophyll‐a content (1649 μg/L). These results can be used to control the species composition of mixed cultures while maintaining their productivity.  相似文献

The internal lipid, carotenoid, and toxin concentrations of Karenia brevis (C. C. Davis) Gert Hansen and Moestrup are influenced by its ability to use ambient light and nutrients for growth and reproduction. This study investigated changes in K. brevis toxicity, lipid class, and carotenoid concentrations in low‐light, nitrate‐replete (250 μmol quanta · m?2 · s?1, 80 μM NO3); high‐light, nitrate‐replete (960 μmol quanta · m?2 · s?1, 80 μM NO3); and high‐light, nitrate‐reduced (960 μmol quanta · m?2 · s?1, <5 μM NO3) mesocosms. Reverse‐phase HPLC quantified the epoxidation state (EPS) of the xanthophyll‐cycle pigments diadinoxanthin and diatoxanthin, and a Chromarod Iatroscan thin layer chromatography/flame ionization detection (TLC/FID) system quantified changes in lipid class concentrations. EPS did not exceed 0.20 in the low‐light mesocosm, but increased to 0.65 in the high‐light mesocosms. Triacylglycerol and monogalactosyldiacylglycerol (MGDG) were the largest lipid classes consisting of 9.3% to 48.7% and 37.3% to 69.7% of total lipid, respectively. Both lipid classes also experienced the greatest concentration changes in high‐light experiments. K. brevis increased EPS and toxin concentrations while decreasing its lipid concentrations under high light. K. brevis may mobilize its toxins into the surrounding environment by reducing lipid concentrations, such as sterols, limiting competition, or toxins are released because lipids are decreased in high light, reducing any protective mechanism against their own toxins.  相似文献

Summary The effects of low temperatures, freezing and desiccation on a cyanobacterium (Phormidium) and an alga (Prasiola) from terrestrial Antarctic habitats were investigated. Net photosynthesis per unit dry weight, measured by gas exchange, and the vital stain Auramine O were used to monitor recovery from stress. Photosynthetic rates by Prasiola were an order of magnitude higher than those by Phormidium, although both continued photosynthesis at sub-zero temperatures. Prasiola survived freezing more readily, but in both cases survival was dependant upon the prevailing light conditions and the presence/absence of free water. Phormidium readily survived desiccation, whereas high mortality occurred in Prasiola, particularly at high light intensities. The results obtained are discussed in relation to the habitat and ecology of the organisms.  相似文献

Many laboratories have solely used the Wilson isolate to physiologically characterize the harmful algal bloom (HAB) dinoflagellate Karenia brevis (C. C. Davis) G. Hansen et Moestrup. However, analysis of one isolate may lead to misinterpretations when extrapolating measurements to field populations. In this study, pulse‐amplitude‐modulated chlorophyll fluorometer (PAM‐FL) relative electron transport rate (ETR), Fv/Fm, and chl were compared with traditional techniques, such as 14C photosynthesis versus irradiance (P–E) curves, DCMU [3‐(3′,4′‐dichlorophenyl)‐1,1‐dimethyl urea] Fv/Fm, and extracted chl. The DCMU and PAM‐FL values of Fv/Fm (r2 = 0.51) and chl (r2 = 0.58) were in good agreement. There was no correlation between 14C and PAM‐FL α, Pmax, and β parameters because PAM‐FL ETR was only a relative measurement. The PAM‐FL techniques were then used to investigate P–E curves, quantum yield of PSII (Fv/Fm), and chl from 10 K. brevis isolates to determine whether one or all isolates would better represent the species. Comparisons were made with a radial photosynthetron, which allowed for controlled conditions of light and temperature. Isolate α, Pmax, and β varied between 0.097 and 0.204 μmol e? · m?2 · s?1 · (μmol quanta · m?2 · s?1)?1, 80.41 and 241 μmol e? · m?2 · s?1, and 0.005 and 0.160 μmol e? · m?2 · s?1 · (μmol quanta · m?2 · s?1)?1, respectively. Either carbon limitation and/or bacterial negative feedback were implicated as the cause of the P–E parameter variability. Furthermore, these results directly contradicted some literature suggestions that K. brevis is a low‐light‐adapted dinoflagellate. Results showed that K. brevis was more than capable of utilizing and surviving in light conditions that may be present on cloudless days off Florida.  相似文献

Thalassiosira oceanica (CCMP 1005) was grown over a range of copper concentrations at saturating and subsaturating irradiance to test the hypothesis that Cu and light were interacting essential resources. Growth was a hyperbolic function of irradiance in Cu‐replete medium (263 fmol Cu′ · L?1) with maximum rates achieved at 200 μmol photons · m?2 · s?1. Lowering the Cu concentration at this irradiance to 30.8 fmol Cu′ · L?1 decreased cellular Cu quota by 7‐fold and reduced growth rate by 50%. Copper‐deficient cells had significantly slower (P < 0.0001) rates of maximum, relative photosynthetic electron transport (rETRmax) than Cu‐sufficient cells, consistent with the role of Cu in photosynthesis in this diatom. In low‐Cu medium (30.8 fmol Cu′ · L?1), growth rate was best described as a positive, linear function of irradiance and reached the maximum value measured in Cu‐replete cells when irradiance increased to 400 μmol photons · m?2 · s?1. Thus, at high light, low‐Cu concentration was no longer limiting to growth: Cu concentration and light interacted strongly to affect growth rate of T. oceanica (P < 0.0001). Relative ETRmax and Cu quota of cells grown at low Cu also increased at 400 μmol photons · m?2 · s?1 to levels measured in Cu‐replete cells. Steady‐state uptake rates of Cu‐deficient and sufficient cells were light‐dependent, suggesting that faster growth of T. oceanica under high light and low Cu was a result of light‐stimulated Cu uptake.  相似文献

Photosynthetic response to high light was determined for Bull kelp, Nereocystis luetkeana (K. Mertens) Postels and Ruprecht in order to understand how this species is affected by short‐term fluctuations in irradiance. Exposure of N. luetkeana blades to high intensity photosynthetically active radiation (1000 µmol photons m?2 s–1) caused increased non‐photochemical quenching of fluorescence and higher de‐epoxidation ratios for xanthophyll pigments indicating that energy‐quenching xanthophylls were used to protect blades against photoinhibition. Despite initiation of these photoprotective mechanisms, maximum photochemical efficiency of photosystem II (Fv/Fm) decreased 40% in response to a 60 min exposure to 1000 µmol photons m?2 s–1 photosynthetically active radiation indicating that photoinhibition had occurred. Light‐saturated rates of oxygen evolution were not changed significantly by the high light treatment. Recovery of maximum photochemical efficiency of photosystem II to within 8% of initial values occurred after a 300‐min dim light period. Younger sections of the blades were slightly more susceptible to high light damage than older sections. Middle sections of the blades were more prone to light‐induced damage at water temperatures of 7°C or 18°C, as compared to 13°C. Exposure to biologically effective ultraviolet‐B radiation (UV‐Bbe) (up to 4.5 kJ m–2 day–1) in photoinhibitory light conditions did not significantly affect light‐induced damage to photosystem II.  相似文献

Acclimation to rapidly fluctuating light, simulating shallow aquatic habitats, is altered depending on inorganic carbon (Ci) availability. Under steady light of 50 μmol photons·m?2·s?1, the growth rate of Synechococcus elongatus PCC7942 was similar in cells grown in high Ci (4 mM) and low Ci (0.02 mM), with induced carbon concentrating mechanisms compensating for low Ci. Growth under fluctuating light of a 1‐s period averaging 50 μmol photons·m?2·s?1 caused a drop in growth rate of 28%±6% in high Ci cells and 38%±8% in low Ci cells. In high Ci cells under fluctuating light, the PSI/PSII ratio increased, the PSII absorption cross‐section decreased, and the PSII turnover rate increased in a pattern similar to high‐light acclimation. In low Ci cells under fluctuating light, the PSI/PSII ratio decreased, the PSII absorption cross‐section decreased, and the PSII turnover remained slow. Electron transport rate was similar in high and low Ci cells but in both was lower under fluctuating than under steady light. After acclimation to a 1‐s period fluctuating light, electron transport rate decreased under steady or long‐period fluctuating light. We hypothesize that high Ci cells acclimated to exploit the bright phases of the fluctuating light, whereas low Ci cells enlarged their PSII pool to integrate the fluctuating light and dampen the variation of the electron flux into a rate‐restricted Ci pool. Light response curves measured under steady light, widely used to predict photosynthetic rates, do not properly predict photosynthetic rates achieved under fluctuating light, and exploitation of fluctuating light is altered by Ci status.  相似文献

Dunaliella species accumulate carotenoids and their role in protection against photooxidative stress has been investigated extensively. By contrast, the role of other antioxidants in this alga, has received less attention. Therefore, the components of the ascorbate–glutathione cycle, along with superoxide dismutase (E.C. 1.15.1.1) and peroxidase (E.C. 1.11.1.11) activity were compared in two strains of Dunaliella salina. Strain IR‐1 had two‐fold higher chlorophyll and β‐carotene concentration than Gh‐U. IR‐1 had around four‐fold higher superoxide dismutase, ascorbate peroxidase and pyrogallol peroxidase activities than Gh‐U on a protein basis. Ascorbate and glutathione concentrations and redox state did not differ between strains and there was little difference in the activity of ascorbate–glutathione cycle enzymes (monodehydroascorbate reductase [E.C. 1.6.5.4], dehydroascorbate reductase [E.C. 1.8.5.1] and glutathione reductase [E.C. 1.8.1.7]). The response of these antioxidants to high light and low temperature was assessed by transferring cells from normal growth conditions (28°C, photon flux density of 100 μmol m?2 s?1)to 28°C/1200 μmol m?2 s?1; 13°C/100 μmol m?2 s?1; 13°C/1200 μmol m?2 s?1 and 28°C/100 μmol m?2 s?1 for 24 h. Low temperature and combined high light‐low temperature decreased chlorophyll and β‐carotene in both strains indicating that these treatments cause photooxidative stress. High light, low temperature and combined high light‐low temperature treatments increased the total ascorbate pool by 10–50% and the total glutathione pool by 20–100% with no consistent effect on their redox state. Activities of ascorbate–glutathione cycle enzymes were not greatly affected but all the treatments increased superoxide dismutase activity. It is concluded that D. salina can partially adjust to photooxidative conditions by increasing superoxide dismutase activity, ascorbate and glutathione.  相似文献

Canopy transpiration in a chronosequence of Central Siberian pine forests   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
Tree transpiration was measured in 28, 67, 204 and 383‐y‐old uniform stands and in a multicohort stand (140–430 y) of Pinus sylvestris ssp. sibirica Lebed. in Central Siberia during August 1995. In addition transpiration of three codominant trees was monitored for two years in a 130‐y‐old stand. All stands established after fire. Leaf area index (LAI) ranged between 0.6 (28‐y‐old stand) and 1.6 for stands older than 67‐y. Stand xylem area at 1.3 m height increased from 4 cm2 m?2 (28‐y) to 11.5 cm2 m?2 (67‐y) and decreased again to 7 cm2 m?2 in old stands. Above‐ground living biomass increased from 1.5 kg dry weight m?2 (28‐y) to 14 kg dry weight m?2 (383‐y). Day‐to‐day variation of tree transpiration in summer was dependent on net radiation, vapour pressure deficit, and soil water stress. Tree‐to‐tree variation of xylem flux was small and increased with heterogeneity in canopy structure. Maximum rates of xylem flux density followed the course of net radiation from mid April when a constant level of maximum rates was reached until mid September when low temperatures and light strongly reduced flux density. Maximum sap flux density (60 g m?2 s?1) and canopy transpiration (1.5 mm d?1) were reached in the 67‐y stand. Average canopy transpiration of all age classes was 0.72 ± 0.3 mm d?1. Canopy transpiration (E) was not correlated with LAI but related to stand sapwood area SA (E = ? 0.02 + 1.15SA R2) which was determined by stand density and tree sapwood area.  相似文献

The abundance and distribution of black band disease on the reef building coralsMontastraea annularis, M. cavernosa, Colpophyllia natans, Diploria clivosa, D. labyrinthiformis andD. strigosa were determined at Algae Reef, Grecian Rocks and Key Largo Dry Rocks in the Key Largo National Marine Sanctuary, Florida, USA. During July and November of 1992 and July 1993, surveys of permanently marked sites covering 9424m2 of reef tract showed that up to 0.72% of 1397 coral colonies of these species were infected with black band disease. The distribution of the disease among the thirty 20-meter diameter sites was clumped, suggesting that the disease is infectious. Year-round monitoring revealed that seasonal disease patterns varied between reefs. Three seasonal patterns were apparent: some coral colonies were infected year round; several colonies exhibited previously unreported reinfection on a seasonal basis; and some exhibited the widely reported pattern of infection limited to the warmer months of the year (sea water temperatures 25 °C or higher).  相似文献
