Large volume, low pressure endotracheal tube cuffs are claimed to have less deleterious effect on tracheal mucosa than high pressure, low volume cuffs. Low pressure cuffs, however, may easily be overinflated to yield pressures that will exceed capillary perfusion pressure. Various large volume cuffed endotracheal tubes were studied, including Portex Profile, Searle Sensiv, Mallinkrodt Hi-Lo, and Lanz. Tracheal mucosal blood flow in 40 patients undergoing surgery was assessed using an endoscopic photographic technique while varying the cuff inflation pressure. It was found that these cuffs when overpressurised impaired mucosal blood flow. This impairment of tracheal mucosal blood flow is an important factor in tracheal morbidity associated with intubation. Hence it is recommended that a cuff inflation pressure of 30 cm H2O (22 mm Hg) should not be exceeded.  相似文献

Measurement of turgor pressure and its gradient in the Phloem of oak   总被引:12,自引:11,他引:1       下载免费PDF全文
Hammel HT 《Plant physiology》1968,43(7):1042-1048
A direct method is described for measuring the pressure in secondary phloem sieve tubes of oak trees. One end of a 26-gauge stainless steel tube was shaped such that when it penetrated the outer bark and transected a few sieve elements, it was stopped by the xylem so that small openings in the end allowed phloem sap to enter the tube. The other end of the stainless tube (phloem needle) was joined to a long glass capillary sealed at its other end to form a manometer for measuring phloem sap pressure. A method for measuring the average osmotic and turgor pressures in cells of leaves is also described. Phloem turgor pressures varied greatly in a series of phloem punctures around the trunk at 1.5 and at 6.3 meters. The variation in turgor pressure was always greater than the variation in osmotic pressure. In a series of turgor pressures arranged in descending order, the values in a sequence for the upper level was usually a little (0-3 atm) larger than the values for the lower level. These results may suggest that translocation of assimilate is favored by a small turgor pressure gradient, but they do more to emphasize the complications in measuring gradients in an elastic low resistance distribution system composed of contiguous longitudinal conduits. The results also imply that the sieve tubes are inflated with assimilate fluid under high pressure which can readily move longitudinally and with less pressure drop than would be necessary if the sieve tubes were rigid.  相似文献

Abstract. We tested the hypothesis that hooked setae function as anchors in three species of tubiculous polychaetes ( Eudistylia vancouveri, Schizobranchia insignis , and Owenia fusiformis ). All maintained position within their tubes when exposed to high pressures (up to 100–200 kPa) applied from the posterior direction (where it would tend to cause the tips of hooks to embed in the tube wall). When pressure was applied in the opposite direction, where hooks would not tend to embed in the tube wall, the worms were expelled from their tubes at lower pressures (30–100 kPa). The ability of these worms to maintain their position within their tubes was independent of body size. On the basis of these findings we made three predictions. First, worms that use their hooked setae as anchors should have those hooks located on the body in greatest number and size on the segments associated with greatest worm diameter. Second, as worms increase in size, setal armory should increase in a predictable way. The force that can be applied to extract worms from their tubes by suction feeding fish or wave action would increase as the area subject to suction increases (proportional to the cross sectional area of the tube). Therefore, we predict that setal armory should also increase as a squared function. Third, hooks or uncini should show patterns of wear or loss and/or the worms' bodies should show scars or wounds where the setae are most used (e.g., where worm diameter is at its maximum). All of these predictions were supported by the data and indicate that hooked setae function as anchors for tubiculous polychaetes. This is important for understanding the biology of these animals and has implications for using hooked setae as characters in phylogenetic analyses.  相似文献

A review of the factors that oppose pulmonary edema formation (alveolar flooding) when capillary pressure is elevated are presented for a normal capillary endothelial barrier and for damaged endothelium associated with ischemia/reperfusion in rabbit, rat, and dog lungs. Normally, tissue pressure, the plasma protein osmotic pressure gradient acting across the capillary wall and lymph flow (Edema Safety Factors) increase to prevent the build-up of fluid in the lung's interstitium when capillary pressure increases. No measureable alveolar edema fluid accumulates until capillary pressure exceeds 30 mmHg. When the capillary wall has been damaged, interstitial edema develops at lower capillary pressures because the plasma protein osmotic pressure will not change greatly to oppose capillary filtration, but lymph flow increases to very high levels to remove the increased filtrate and the result is that capillary pressures can increase to 20-25 mmHg before alveolar flooding results. In addition, the mechanisms responsible for producing pulmonary endothelial damage with ischemia/reperfusion are reviewed and the effects of O2 radical scavengers, neutrophil depletion or altering their adherence to the endothelium, and increasing cAMP on reversing the damage to the pulmonary endothelium is presented.  相似文献

We developed a novel real-timeservo-controlled perfusion system that exposes endothelial cells grownin nondistensible or distensible tubes to realistic pulse pressures andphasic shears at physiological mean pressures. A rate-controlled flowpump and linear servo-motor are controlled by digitalproportional-integral-derivative feedback that employspreviously digitized aortic pressure waves as a command signal. Theresulting pressure mirrors the recorded waveform and can be digitallymodified to yield any desired mean and pulse pressure amplitude, typically 0-150 mmHg at shears of 0.5-15 dyn/cm2.The system accurately reproduces the desired arterial pressure waveformand cogenerates physiological flow and shears by the interaction ofpressure with the tubing impedance. Rectangular glass capillary tubes[1-mm inside diameter (ID)] are used for real-time fluorescentimaging studies (i.e., pHi, NO, Ca2+), whereassilicon distensible tubes (4-mm ID) are used for more chronic (i.e.,2-24 h) studies regarding signal transduction and geneexpression. The latter have an elastic modulus of12.4 · 106 dyn/cm2 similar to in vivovessels of this size and are studied with the use of a benchtop system. The new approach provides the first in vitro application of realisticmechanical pulsatile forces on vascular cells and should facilitatestudies of phasic shear and distension interaction and pulsatile signal transduction.

Modeling the complex deformations of cylindrical tubes under external pressure is of interest in engineering and physiological applications. The highly non-linear post-buckling behavior of cross-section of the tube during collapse attracted researchers for years. Major efforts were concentrated on studying the behavior of thin-wall tubes. Unfortunately, the knowledge on post-buckling of thick-wall tubes is still incomplete, although many experimental and several theoretical studies have been performed. In this study we systematically studied the effect of the wall thickness on post-buckling behavior of the tube. For this purpose, we utilized a computational model for evaluation of the real geometry of the deformed cross-sectional area due to negative transmural (internal minus external) pressure. We also developed an experimental method to validate the computational results. Based on the computed cross-sections of tubes with different wall thicknesses, we developed a general tube law that accounts for thin or thick wall tubes and fits the numerical data of computed cross-sectional areas versus transmural pressures.  相似文献

To address the functional contributions of capillary chaetae in the maldanid polychaete Clymenella torquata, we compared irrigation efficiency and tube structure for animals with intact and trimmed capillary chaetae. We measured pumping rates for worms before and after they were anaesthetized and subjected either to capillary trimming or mock trimming, i.e. handling without trimming. Worms with trimmed chaetae were significantly less effective at moving water through their tubes than those with intact chaetae. There were no significant differences in the ability of control worms to move water within their tubes. No significant changes in rates of peristalsis were observed among experimental or control groups. These data strongly suggest that body musculature and capillary chaetae work in concert to hold worms in position within tubes during peristaltic pumping. When chaetae are shortened, the body musculature must contract to a greater degree, increasing the functional diameter of the worm to achieve the necessary traction with the tube wall, resulting in less efficient irrigation. We also compared the inner diameters of original field tubes to tubes built by control worms or worms after capillary trimming. The inner diameters of new tubes built by worms with shortened chaetae were larger than their original tubes, while those of both control groups were not. One possible explanation is that the chaetae have a sensory role and shortened chaetae send the false message that the nascent tube walls are farther away than they are, the body contracts in compensation and the tube is widened, however this idea has not been tested.  相似文献

Summary In vitro penetration of the micropyle of freshly isolatedGasteria verrucosa ovules by pollen tube was monitored on agar medium. 40–60% of the micropyles were penetrated, comparable with in vivo penetration percentages. When germinated on agar,Gasteria pollen tube elongation lasts for up to 8 h while plasma streaming continues for about 20–24 h. The generative cell divides between 7 and 20 h after germination, and after 20 h the pollen tube arrives at one of the synergids. The sperm cells arrive after 22 h. The whole process takes more time in vitro than in vivo. In fast growing pollen tubes, a pulsed telescope-like growth pattern of tube elongation is observed. The formation of pollen tube wall material precedes tube elongation and probably prevents regular enlargement of the pollen tube tip-zone. Rapid stretching of the new pollen tube wall material follows, probably due to gradually increased osmotic pressure and the use of lateral wall material below the tip. The stretching ceases when the supplies of plasma membrane and excretable wall material are exhausted. Multiple pollen tube penetration of the micropyle occurs in vitro as it does in vivo. Most pollen tube growth ceases within the micropyle but, if it continues, the pollen tubes curl. Inside the micropyle the pollen tube shows haustorial growth. At the ultrastructural level, the wall thickening of in vitro pollen tubes is quite similar to that in vivo. Before transfer of pollen tube cytoplasm a small tube penetrates one of the synergids. Sperm nuclei with condensed chromatin are observed in the pollen tube and the synergid. In vivo prometaphase nuclei are found in the most chalazal part of a synergid, against the egg cell nucleus and nucleus of the central cell at a later stage. Using media forLilium ovule culture,Gasteria ovules were kept alive for at least 6 weeks. Swelling of the ovule depends on pollen tube penetration. The conditions for fertilization to occur after in vitro ovular pollination seem to be present.  相似文献

Pressure-velocity relations were obtained in vertical and horizontal glass tubes (I.D. 26 to 83 micron) perfused with normal human blood at feed hematocrits between 0.25 and 0.65. Perfusion pressures used corresponded to wall shear stresses up to 0.27 dyn cm-2. Red cell velocity measurements were made both immediately following implementation of perfusion pressure (with red cells still disaggregated) and in a steady state situation (with red cells aggregated). Analysis of the slopes of the linear relations between perfusion pressure and velocity showed apparent viscosity to decrease with the manifestation of red cell aggregation. In horizontal tubes, sedimentation and aggregation occurred simultaneously, and apparent viscosity increased due to axial asymmetry of cell concentration. Evidence for a yield shear stress (flow stagnation at positive driving pressure) was not observed.  相似文献

We tested the hypothesis that the effective oncotic force that opposes fluid filtration across the microvessel wall is the local oncotic pressure difference across the endothelial surface glycocalyx and not the global difference between the plasma and tissue. In single frog mesenteric microvessels perfused and superfused with solutions containing 50 mg/ml albumin, the effective oncotic pressure exerted across the microvessel wall was not significantly different from that measured when the perfusate alone contained albumin at 50 mg/ml. Measurements were made during transient and steady-state filtration at capillary pressures between 10 and 35 cmH(2)O. A cellular-level model of coupled water and solute flows in the interendothelial cleft showed water flux through small breaks in the junctional strand limited back diffusion of albumin into the protected space on the tissue side of the glycocalyx. Thus oncotic forces opposing filtration are larger than those estimated from blood-to-tissue protein concentration differences, and transcapillary fluid flux is smaller than estimated from global differences in oncotic and hydrostatic pressures.  相似文献

Adventitial mechanics were studied on the basis of adventitial tube tests and associated stress analyses utilizing a thin-walled model. Inflation tests of 11 nonstenotic human femoral arteries (79.3 +/- 8.2 yr, means +/- SD) were performed during autopsy. Adventitial tubes were separated anatomically and underwent cyclic, quasistatic extension-inflation tests using physiological pressures and high pressures up to 100 kPa. Associated circumferential and axial stretches were typically <20%, indicating "adventitiosclerosis." Adventitias behaved nearly elastically for both loading domains, demonstrating high tensile strengths (>1 MPa). The anisotropic and strongly nonlinear mechanical responses were represented appropriately by two-dimensional Fung-type stored-energy functions. At physiological pressure (13.3 kPa), adventitias carry ~25% of the pressure load in situ, whereas their circumferential and axial stresses were similar to the total wall stresses (~50 kPa in both directions), supporting a "uniform stress hypothesis." At higher pressures, they became the mechanically predominant layer, carrying >50% of the pressure load. These significant load-carrying capabilities depended strongly on circumferential and axial in-vessel prestretches (mean values: 0.95 and 1.08). On the basis of these results, the mechanical role of the adventitia at physiological and hypertensive states and during balloon angioplasty was characterized.  相似文献

Effects of surface tension and viscosity on airway reopening   总被引:8,自引:0,他引:8
We studied airway opening in a benchtop model intended to mimic bronchial walls held in apposition by airway lining fluid. We measured the relationship between the airway opening velocity (U) and the applied airway opening pressure in thin-walled polyethylene tubes of different radii (R) using lining fluids of different surface tensions (gamma) and viscosities (mu). Axial wall tension (T) was applied to modify the apparent wall compliance characteristics, and the lining film thickness (H) was varied. Increasing mu or gamma or decreasing R or T led to an increase in the airway opening pressures. The effect of H depended on T: when T was small, opening pressures increased slightly as H was decreased; when T was large, opening pressure was independent of H. Using dimensional analysis, we found that the relative importance of viscous and surface tension forces depends on the capillary number (Ca = microU/gamma). When Ca is small, the opening pressure is approximately 8 gamma/R and acts as an apparent "yield pressure" that must be exceeded before airway opening can begin. When Ca is large (Ca greater than 0.5), viscous forces add appreciably to the overall opening pressures. Based on these results, predictions of airway opening times suggest that airway closure can persist through a considerable portion of inspiration when lining fluid viscosity or surface tension are elevated.  相似文献

Compliant tubes attain a complex three-dimensional geometry when the external pressure exceeds the internal pressure and the tube is partially collapsed. A new technique for remote measurement of dynamic surfaces was applied to classical experiments with collapsible tubes. This work presents measurements of the three-dimensional structure of the tube as well as pressure and flow measurements during static loading and during steady-state fluid flow. Results are shown for two tubes of the same material and internal diameter but with different wall thicknesses. The measured tube laws compare well with previously published data and suggest the possible existence of a similarity tube law. The steady flow measurements did not compare well with the one-dimensional theoretical predictions.  相似文献

Adequate CO2 elimination and normal arterial PCO2 levels can be maintained in dogs during apnea by delivering a continuous flow of inspired gas at high flow rate (1-3 l.min-1.kg-1) through tubes placed in the main-stem bronchi. However, during constant-flow ventilation (CFV) the mean alveolar pressure is increased, causing increased lung volume despite low pressures in the trachea. We hypothesized that the increased dynamic alveolar pressures during CFV were due to momentum transfer from the high-velocity jet stream to resident gas in the lung. To test this, we simulated CFV in straight tubes and in a branched airway model to determine whether changes in gas flow rate (V), gas density (rho), and tube diameter (D) altered the pressure difference (delta P) between alveoli and airway opening in a manner consistent with that predicted by conservation of momentum. Momentum analysis predicts that delta P should vary with V2, whereas measurements yielded a dependence of V1.69 in branched tubes and V1.9 in straight tubes. Substitution of heliox (80% He-20% O2) for air significantly reduced lung hyperinflation during CFV. As predicted by momentum transfer, delta P varied with rho 1.0. Momentum analysis also predicts that delta P should vary with D-2.0, whereas measurements indicated a dependence on D-2.02. The influence of V and rho on depth of penetration of the jet down the airway was explored in a straight tube model by varying the flow rate and gas used. The influence of geometry on penetration was measured by changing the ratio of jet-to-airway tube diameters.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Unicelled conidia of Colletotrichum gloeosporioides germinated 3 h after inoculation producing single germ tubes. The orientation of the germ tubes and their lateral branches as they grew was towards the open stomata and away from closed stomata. By 24 h post-inoculation, the lateral branches had developed specialized infection vesicles either over the stomata or within the stomatal cavities. The infection vesicles produced primary infection hyphae which entered the leaves through stomatal openings. The disease symptoms became apparent by 6 days post-inoculation when clusters of abundant conidiophores emerged by rupturing the leaf epidermal layer, forming acervuli mostly near the base of idioblasts. The pressure exerted by the emerging conidiophores caused stretching of epidermal layer leading to the widening of the acervuli. The conidia are borne on the tips of the erect conidiophores.  相似文献

Concentration profiles of 2.5 microns latex beads were measured to demonstrate lateral transport of platelet-sized objects in flows of blood suspensions; the flows had equivalent Poiseuille wall shear rates (WSRs) from 250 to 1220 s-1. Each experimental trial began with a steady flow of suspension without beads in a thin-walled capillary tube (219 microns ID; 10.2 microns SD). The tube entrance was then switched to a reservoir containing suspension of equal hematocrit, but with beads, for a short interval of flow at the same WSR. This process established a paraboloidal tongue of labeled suspension with a transient concentration gradient at its surface. The tube and contents were rapidly frozen to fix the suspended particles in flow-determined locations. Segments of frozen tube were collected at distances from the entrance corresponding to 13%, 39%, and 65% of the axial extent of the ideal paraboloidal tongue. Concentration profiles were estimated from distances measured on fluorescence microscope images of cross-cut tube segments. Experiments used tubes either 40 or 50 cm long, suspension hematocrits of 0, 15, or 40%, and bead concentrations in the range of 1.5-2.2 x 10(5)/mm3. Profiles for 0% hematocrit suspension, a dilute, single-component suspension, had features expected in normal diffusive mixing in a flow. Distinctly different profiles and more lateral transport occurred when the suspensions contained red cells; then, all profiles for 13% extent had regions of excess bead concentration near the wall. Suspension flows with 40% hematocrit exhibited the largest amount of lateral transport. A case is made that, to a first approximation, the rate of lateral transport grew linearly with WSR; however, statistical analysis showed that for 40% hematocrit, less lateral transport occurred when the WSR was 250 s-1 or 1220 s-1 than 560 s-1, thus indicating that the rate behavior is more complex.  相似文献

We studied flutter in collapsible tubes as a possible mechanism for the generation of respiratory wheezes. The pressure-flow relationships and the wall oscillations of thick-walled [wall thickness (h)-to-lumen radius (r) ratio 1:1.7 to 1.3] self-supporting latex and Silastic tubes mounted between rigid pipes were measured. A high-impedance vacuum pump was connected to the downstream end. Upstream and downstream valves were used to control corresponding resistances. We found loud honking sounds and tube wall oscillations that occurred only when the tubes were buckled and flow limiting, i.e., when the flow became constant and independent of downstream driving pressure. The overall range of oscillatory frequencies was 260-750 Hz for airflow, presenting as sharp peaks of power on the frequency spectrum. The oscillatory frequencies (f) were higher at higher fluid velocities (u) and with narrower distance between opposing flattened walls (2b), resulting from increasing downstream suction pressure and the transmural pressure becoming more negative. The effect of u and b on f for a latex tube (h-to-r ratio 1:1.7) were found to be f = 228 + 0.021 (u/b). These relationships were valid throughout the range of oscillations in this tube (283-720 Hz) and with flow rates of 12-64 l/min. The experimental data were compared with predictions of the fluid dynamic flutter theory and the vortex-induced wall vibrations mechanism. We conclude that viscid flutter in soft tubes is the more probable mechanism for the generation of oscillations in the soft tube model and is a possible mechanism for the generation of respiratory wheezes.  相似文献

Matched asymptotic expansions are used to study a model of the coupled fluid flow in the capillaries and tissue of the microcirculation. These capillaries are long, narrow cylindrical tubes embedded in a uniform tissue space. The capillary, or intraluminal, flow is assumed to be that of an incompressible Navier-Stokes fluid wherein colloids are represented as dilute solute; the extraluminal flow in the tissue is according to Darcy's law. Central to this fluid exchange is the boundary condition on the fluid radial velocity at the semipermeable wall of the capillary. This boundary condition, involving the local hydrostatic and colloidal osmotic pressures in both the capillary and the tissue, together with the radial gradient of the tissue hydrostatic pressure, couples the intra- and extraluminal flow fields. With this model we investigate the relationship between transport properties, hydrostatic pressures, and flow exchange for a single capillary, and describe the fluid transport in the tissue space produced by an array of such capillaries.  相似文献

Segments of silicone rubber tube were suspended between rigid pipes and subjected to slowly varying transmural pressure covering a range from slight distension to collapse with osculation. The local inside cross-sectional area at a chosen axial site was simultaneously measured via catheter by an electrical impedance method. Pressure-area relations were recorded thus at various axial sites, under varying conditions of axial tube wall tension, in tubes of two different wall thickness (0.3 and 0.4 of mean radius). Unsupported tube segment length was also varied by means of an insert device. The relations were used to calculate the variation of wave velocity with area according to Young's equation. First opposite wall contact during collapse was shown to occur at a smaller fraction of undistended circular cross-sectional area than in the thin-walled tubes investigated previously by others.  相似文献

The flow around adherent cells in a parallel-plate channel and that in a circular cylindrical tube are numerically analyzed, and their effects on the adherent cells are compared. The cells are modeled as rigid spherical particles and they are assumed to be attached to a wall of a 2D channel uniformly in a square array, or a wall of a circular tube regularly in a line along the tube axis. It is found that, when the size ratios of the particle-to-channel height and the particle-to-tube diameter are smaller than approximately 0.2, the distributions of the shear stress and the pressure exerted on the surface of an adherent particle as well as the drag force and torque acting on it compare favorably in the 2D channel flow and tube flow. As the size ratios increase from 0.2, the differences between the 2D channel and the tube increase drastically, especially when separation distances between neighboring particles are large.  相似文献
