We have measured the chromatic threshold sensitivity to stimuli with spectral composition determined by a periodic function of energy over wavelength. This approach is analogous to frequency studies of spatial vision for the study of colour. A device was constructed permitting the synthesis of illuminants over the entire visible range (400-700 nm) in which phase, frequency and amplitude can be independently controlled. We have used 12 frequencies of square-wave functions (from 0.5 to 3.6 cycles/300 nm) and seven values of phase (between 0 degrees and 180 degrees) to obtain the contrast sensitivity function of the chromatic system in three normal trichromats. The results show maximum sensitivity around 1.5 cycles/300 nm and a high-frequency cut-off at 3.6 cycles/300 nm. These empirical values are compared with the predictions obtained from three current psychophysical models of opponent-colour process.  相似文献

Spatial frequency difference thresholds for vertical, high contrast sinewave gratings were estimated at 1.25, 2.5, 5.0 and 10.0 cyc deg-1. Within an experiment two independent manipulations of the stimulus were employed: (1) the number of cycles of the sinewave grating was varied over a range of 2.0 to 15.0 cycles; and (2) a stationary, random frequency modulation was imposed on the sinewave. The probability density function of the frequency modulation was a Gaussian whose dispersion coefficient was varied, in different experiments, in the range of 0 to 10% of the frequency of the parent sinewave. Both of these experimental variables were found to affect the precision with which spatial frequency discrimination could be performed. The Weber fraction increased both as the number of cycles present was decreased and as the dispersion coefficient of the modulating function was increased. These two effects were independent. The data support previous psychophysical findings that spatial frequency discrimination involves averaging over the total area of the stimulus and are compatible with spatial primitive models of spatial contrast vision. The data are not compatible with those of Hirsch and Hylton (J. opt. Soc. Am. 72, 1367-1374) which suggest that spatial interval discrimination occurs solely by operation of foveal mechanisms.  相似文献

We quantified texture segregation by measuring psychophysically the percentage correct detection scores for each of a set of 10 texture-defined (TD) letters using the temporal two-alternative forced choice method, and at the same time quantified spatial discrimination of the TD form of measuring psychophysically the percentage correct letter recognition scores for the 10 letters. Ten levels of task difficulty were created by adding noise dots to the texture patterns. The resulting psychophysical data were used to test and compare models of the detection and recognition of texture-defined letters. Each model comprised a sequence of physiologically plausible stages in early visual processing. Each had the same first, second and third stages, namely linear orientation-tuned spatial filters followed by rectification and smoothing. Model 1 had only one non-linear stage. Model 2 had two non-linear stages. In model 2 the second non-linear stage was cross-orientation inhibition. This second non-linear stage enhanced the texture borders by, in effect, comparing textures at different locations in the texture pattern. In both models, the last stage modelled either letter detection or letter recognition. Letter recognition was modelled as follows. We passed a given letter stimulus through the first several stages of a model and, in 10 separate calculations, cross-correlated the output with a template of each of the 10 letters. From these 10 correlations we obtained a predicted percentage correct letter recognition score for the given letter stimulus. The predicted recognition scores closely agreed with the experimental data at all 10 levels of task difficulty for model 2, but not for model 1. We conclude that a borderenhancing algorithm is necessary to model letter recognition. The letter-detection algorithm modelled detection of part of a letter (a single letter stroke) in terms of the signal-to-noise ratio of a letter-segment detector. The predicted letter detection scores fitted the data closely for both models.  相似文献

Readers differ considerably in their speed of self-paced reading. One factor known to influence fixation durations in reading is the preprocessing of words in parafoveal vision. Here we investigated whether individual differences in reading speed or the amount of information extracted from upcoming words (the preview benefit) can be explained by basic differences in extrafoveal vision—i.e., the ability to recognize peripheral letters with or without the presence of flanking letters. Forty participants were given an adaptive test to determine their eccentricity thresholds for the identification of letters presented either in isolation (extrafoveal acuity) or flanked by other letters (crowded letter recognition). In a separate eye-tracking experiment, the same participants read lists of words from left to right, while the preview of the upcoming words was manipulated with the gaze-contingent moving window technique. Relationships between dependent measures were analyzed on the observational level and with linear mixed models. We obtained highly reliable estimates both for extrafoveal letter identification (acuity and crowding) and measures of reading speed (overall reading speed, size of preview benefit). Reading speed was higher in participants with larger uncrowded windows. However, the strength of this relationship was moderate and it was only observed if other sources of variance in reading speed (e.g., the occurrence of regressive saccades) were eliminated. Moreover, the size of the preview benefit—an important factor in normal reading—was larger in participants with better extrafoveal acuity. Together, these results indicate a significant albeit moderate contribution of extrafoveal vision to individual differences in reading speed.  相似文献

Reading speed is dramatically reduced when readers cannot use their central vision. This is because low visual acuity and crowding negatively impact letter recognition in the periphery. In this study, we designed a new font (referred to as the Eido font) in order to reduce inter-letter similarity and consequently to increase peripheral letter recognition performance. We tested this font by running five experiments that compared the Eido font with the standard Courier font. Letter spacing and x-height were identical for the two monospaced fonts. Six normally-sighted subjects used exclusively their peripheral vision to run two aloud reading tasks (with eye movements), a letter recognition task (without eye movements), a word recognition task (without eye movements) and a lexical decision task. Results show that reading speed was not significantly different between the Eido and the Courier font when subjects had to read single sentences with a round simulated gaze-contingent central scotoma (10° diameter). In contrast, Eido significantly decreased perceptual errors in peripheral crowded letter recognition (-30% errors on average for letters briefly presented at 6° eccentricity) and in peripheral word recognition (-32% errors on average for words briefly presented at 6° eccentricity).  相似文献

Adaptive behavior guided by unconscious visual cues occurs in patients with various kinds of brain damage as well as in normal observers, all of whom can process visual information of which they are fully unaware [1] [2] [3] [4] [5] [6] [7] [8]. Little is known on the possibility that unconscious vision is influenced by visual cues that have access to consciousness [9]. Here we report a 'blind' letter discrimination induced through a semantic interaction with conscious color processing in a patient who is agnosic for visual shapes, but has normal color vision and visual imagery. In seeing the initial letters of color names printed in different colors, it is normally easier to name the print color when it is congruent with the initial letter of the color name than when it is not [10]. The patient could discriminate the initial letters of the words 'red' and 'green' printed in the corresponding colors significantly above chance but without any conscious accompaniment, whereas he performed at chance with the reverse color-letter mapping as well as in standard tests of letter reading. We suggest that the consciously perceived colors activated a representation of the corresponding word names and their component letters, which in turn brought out a partially successful, unconscious processing of visual inputs corresponding to the activated letter representations.  相似文献

Band-spectrum noise has been shown to suppress the visual perception of printed letters. The suppression exhibits a specific dependence on the spatial frequency of the noise, and the frequency domain of most effective inhibition has been related to the size of the letters. In this paper, we address two important questions that were left open by previous studies: (1) Is the observed effect specific to text, and which parameters determine the domain of most effective suppression? (2) What is the origin of the effect in terms of underlying neural processes? We conduct a series of psychophysical experiments that demonstrate that the frequency domain of most effective inhibition depends on the stroke width of the letter rather than on the letter size. These experiments also demonstrate that the effect is not specific to the recognition of letters but also applies to other objects and even to single bars. We attribute the observed effect to nonclassical receptive field (non-CRF) inhibition in visual area V1. This mechanism has previously been suggested as the possible origin of various other perceptual effects. We introduce computational models of two types of cell that incorporate non-CRF inhibition, which are based on Gabor energy filters extended by surround suppression of two kinds: isotropic and anisotropic. The computational models confirm previous qualitative explanations of perceptual effects, such as orientation contrast pop-out, reduced saliency of lines embedded in gratings, and reduced saliency of contours surrounded by textures. We apply the computational models to the images used in the psychophysical experiments. The computational results show a dependence of the inhibition effect on the spatial frequency of the noise that is similar to the suppression effect measured in the psychophysical experiments. The experimental results and their explanation give further support to the idea of a possible functional role of non-CRF inhibition in the separation of contour from texture information and the mediation of object contours to higher cortical areas.  相似文献

Recent psychophysical studies have shown that attention can alter contrast sensitivities for temporally broadband stimuli such as flashed gratings. The present study examined the effect of attention on the contrast sensitivity for temporally narrowband stimuli with various temporal frequencies. Observers were asked to detect a drifting grating of 0-40 Hz presented gradually in the peripheral visual field with or without a concurrent letter identification task in the fovea. We found that removal of attention by the concurrent task reduced the contrast sensitivity for gratings with low temporal frequencies much more profoundly than for gratings with high temporal frequencies and for flashed gratings. The analysis revealed that the temporal contrast sensitivity function had a more band-pass shape with poor attention. Additional experiments showed that this was also true when the target was presented in various levels of luminance noise. These results suggest that regardless of the presence of external noise, attention extensively modulates visual sensitivity for sustained retinal inputs.  相似文献

Alcohol consumption among young adults is widely accepted in modern society and may be the starting point for abusive use of alcohol at later stages of life. Chronic alcohol exposure can lead to visual function impairment. In the present study, we investigated the spatial luminance contrast sensitivity, colour arrangement ability, and colour discrimination thresholds on young adults that weekly consume alcoholic beverages without clinical concerns. Twenty-four young adults were evaluated by an ophthalmologist and performed three psychophysical tests to evaluate their vision functions. We estimated the spatial luminance contrast sensitivity function at 11 spatial frequencies ranging from 0.1 to 30 cycles/degree. No difference in contrast sensitivity was observed comparing alcohol consumers and control subjects. For the evaluation of colour vision, we used the Farnsworth-Munsell 100 hue test (FM 100 test) to test subject’s ability to perform a colour arrangement task and the Mollon-Reffin test (MR test) to measure subject’s colour discrimination thresholds. Alcohol consumers made more mistakes than controls in the FM100 test, and their mistakes were diffusely distributed in the FM colour space without any colour axis preference. Alcohol consumers also performed worse than controls in the MR test and had higher colour discrimination thresholds compared to controls around three different reference points of a perceptually homogeneous colour space, the CIE 1976 chromaticity diagram. There was no colour axis preference in the threshold elevation observed among alcoholic subjects. Young adult weekly alcohol consumers showed subclinical colour vision losses with preservation of spatial luminance contrast sensitivity. Adolescence and young adult age are periods of important neurological development and alcohol exposure during this period of life might be responsible for deficits in visual functions, especially colour vision that is very sensitive to neurotoxicants.  相似文献

Event-related potentials (ERPs) were obtained to letters during 3 tasks that involved a SIMPLE RESPONSE (SR) to each letter presentation, a FORM discrimination of the letters that formed a closed loop, and a RHYME discrimination of the letters that rhymed with the letter ‘v’. The first task only required detection of the letters, the FORM task required a visual-spatial analysis. and the RHYME task, a grapheme-phoneme conversion of the letters followed by a determination of rhyming characteristics. The SR ERPs were morphologically different from the discriminative ERPs, notably by the absence of N2 and P3. The difference wave forms between the discrimination and SR conditions and between the targets and non-targets indicated differential topographies of components associated with the FORM and RHYME tasks in the 300 msec latency region. In both of these tasks, components exhibited distributions localized primarily in the occipital regions, whereas in the RHYME task they extended more anteriorly and encompassed temporo-parietal regions. Thus, although the stimulus presentation was visual, the requirement of a visual-auditory conversion in the RHYME task resulted in activity that was more proximal to auditory regions than when only a FORM analysis of the letters was required.  相似文献

Noise correlation can easily occur in the densely connected systems observed in biological information processing. We study the consequences of noise correlation for a statistically optimal processing of noise-perturbed receptor array outputs. We find a critical importance of the noise correlation length as compared to the receptors' tuning width for both the structure and the performance of the ideal observer. We show the general consistency of our scheme with psychophysical discrimination thresholds obtained in human spatial vision.  相似文献

A series of psychophysical tests were designed to determine whether a computer simulation of the human retina could accurately predict the geometry of various stimuli that were optimally resolved for human foveal vision. Stimuli were used that were of the order of the grain of the cone mosaic, i.e., of the order of 2 × 2. In the first set of experiments, resolution was tested using a two-bar stimulus. In one experimental series the gap between the two bars was varied, and in a second series the gap was kept constant and the width of the bars varied. In a second set of experiments, various block letters and a number of series for each letter were used; in each experimental series a single parameter was systematically varied. The same stimuli were also used as inputs for the computer simulation. When proper controls were used, the psychophysical data and computer simulation gave remarkably comparable results. Care was taken to differentiate between simple detection of a pattern, and resolution, which involved proper identification of the image.  相似文献

Topographic characteristics of peripheral letter recognition were investigated using a sustained attention paradigm to clarify whether its deployment in the visual field is equally easy in all eight tested locations at 7.5 deg eccentricity. Target size (36 arcmin) was clearly above threshold, so that letters were easily recognized at long durations (> 500 ms). In the main experiment, they were displayed for an individually determined duration of 66 to 167 ms. Six of twelve normally sighted subjects were in their twenties, the others in their fifties. The target location was cued (1 s), and after 2.5-4 s delay, a target was displayed. The results provide strong evidence that performance depended significantly on location and subject. All spatial characteristics showed anisometry, and most showed vertical asymmetry of either sign. Performance was always best on the horizontal meridian. None of the results correlated with subject age. These findings also show that in disfavored locations, performance is limited by deploying attention there, not by holding it there. Consequently, in low vision rehabilitation after binocular central field loss, the choice of a preferred retinal locus for 'eccentric viewing' can be limited by an attentional factor that is unrelated to the eye disease.  相似文献

Summary Due to the manner in which the English language is used, words exhibit strong internal constraints on letters, but some additional constraint may be imposed by the context in which words appear. In order to estimate the internal constraints of words and the overall effect of context, an experiment was carried out using 225 human subjects who predicted letters in each of the first four positions within words, both with and without context prior to the words. It was found that as more letters at the beginning of words are given, prediction of the following letters increases monotonically, but the increase is not smooth. Prediction of the third letter of words given the first two letters is only a little better than prediction of the second letter given only the first. This effect may be explained by the probable combinations of vowels and consonants at the beginning of words. Letters in the first two positions show no improvement due to long context but prediction of later letters is increased by such context so that prediction rises smoothly from the initial letter to the fourth letter. Also, the type of word in which the letters are to be predicted affects the prediction, function words showing more constraint on letters than content words. The difference between function and content words does not take effect, however, until the first two letters of the word are given. Using the prediction data from words preceded by long context, extrapolations of constraint out to the tenth letter were obtained. From the values of constraint at the first ten letter positions it was possible to estimate the maximum unilateral sequential constraint in English. A value of about 48% was obtained which compares with previous estimates of 50%. A further evaluation of the overall effect of context indicates that about 81% of the constraint in English is contained within the words themselves, and the other 19% is due to any additional context. This paper is based on a dissertation submitted to the Department of Psychology, The Johns Hopkins University, in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Ph. Psychophysical studies suggest that humans preferentially use a narrow band of low spatial frequencies for face recognition. Here we asked whether artificial face recognition systems have an improved recognition performance at the same spatial frequencies as humans. To this end, we estimated recognition performance over a large database of face images by computing three discriminability measures: Fisher Linear Discriminant Analysis, Non-Parametric Discriminant Analysis, and Mutual Information. In order to address frequency dependence, discriminabilities were measured as a function of (filtered) image size. All three measures revealed a maximum at the same image sizes, where the spatial frequency content corresponds to the psychophysical found frequencies. Our results therefore support the notion that the critical band of spatial frequencies for face recognition in humans and machines follows from inherent properties of face images, and that the use of these frequencies is associated with optimal face recognition performance.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE--To study delays between sending referral letters and the outpatient appointment and to assess the content of referral and reply letters, their educational value, and the extent to which questions asked are answered by reply letters. DESIGN--Retrospective review of referrals to 16 consultant orthopaedic surgeons at five hospitals, comprising 288 referral letters with corresponding replies, by scoring contents of letters. SETTING--Orthopaedic teaching hospitals in Nottingham, Derby, and Mansfield. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES--Weighted scores of contents of referral and reply letters, assessment of their educational value, and responses to questions in referral letters. RESULTS--Median outpatient delay was 23.4 weeks. There was no significant decrease in waiting time if the referral letter was marked "urgent" but a significantly greater delay (p less than 0.01) if referrals were directed to an unnamed consultant. The content score was generally unsatisfactory for both referrals and replies, and there was no correlation for the content scores of the referral letter and its reply (r = 0.13). Items of education were rare in the referral letters (8/288; 3%) and significantly more common in replies (75/288; 26%) (p much less than 0.001). Senior registrars were significantly more likely to attempt education than other writers (p less than 0.02). Education in replies was significantly related to increased length of the letter (p less than 0.05) and was more likely to occur if the referral was addressed to a named consultant (p less than 0.03). 48 (17%) Referral letters asked questions, of which 21 (44%) received a reply. No factor was found to influence the asking of or replying to questions. CONCLUSIONS--The potential for useful communication in the referral letter and in the reply from orthopaedic surgeons is being missed at a number of levels. The content is often poor, the level of mutual education is low, and the use of the referral letter to determine urgency is deficient. Most questions asked by general practitioners are not answered.  相似文献

Analyses of joint moments are important in the study of human motion, and are crucial for our understanding of e.g. how and why ACL injuries occur. Such analyses may be affected by artifacts due to inconsistencies in the equations of motion when force and movement data are filtered with different cut-off frequencies. The purpose of this study was to quantify the effect of these artifacts, and compare joint moments calculated with the same or different cut-off frequency for the filtering of force and movement data. 123 elite handball players performed sidestep cutting while the movement was recorded by eight 240 Hz cameras and the ground reaction forces were recorded by a 960 Hz force plate. Knee and hip joint moments were calculated through inverse dynamics, with four different combinations of cut-off frequencies for signal filtering: movement 10 Hz, force 10 Hz, (10-10); movement 15 Hz, force 15 Hz; movement 10 Hz, force 50 Hz (10-50); movement 15 Hz, force 50 Hz. The results revealed significant differences, especially between conditions with different filtering of force and movement. Mean (SD) peak knee abduction moment for the 10-10 and 10-50 condition were 1.27 (0.53) and 1.64 (0.68) Nm/kg, respectively. Ranking of players based on knee abduction moments were affected by filtering condition. Out of 20 players with peak knee abduction moment higher than mean+1S D with the 10-50 condition, only 11 were still above mean+1 SD when the 10-10 condition was applied. Hip moments were very sensitive to filtering cut-off. Mean (SD) peak hip flexion moment was 3.64 (0.75) and 5.92 (1.80) under the 10-10 and 10-50 conditions, respectively. Based on these findings, force and movement data should be processed with the same filter. Conclusions from previous inverse dynamics studies, where this was not the case, should be treated with caution.  相似文献

Fast noninertial shifts of attention   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3

It was suggested that some discrimination tasks (e.g. discrimination between the letters T and L) require serial search by scrutinizing each letter (target) with a small aperture of focal attention. Here we examine the effect of intertarget distance on discrimination performance, using two targets. We find reduction in performance at short distances, in agreement with masking studies, but constant performance independent of distance outside this masking region. This constant performance is still lower than expected from masking effects and might reflect attentive process. Sequential presentation of the targets with delays up to 30-40 ms, while reducing available processing time, does not cause reduction in performance, thus supporting the suggestion that discrimination of the two targets is a serial process. The independence of performance on distance suggests fast noninertial shifts of attention.  相似文献

The whole-genome shotgun (WGS) assembly technique has been remarkably successful in efforts to determine the sequence of bases that make up a genome. WGS assembly begins with a large collection of short fragments that have been selected at random from a genome. The sequence of bases at each end of the fragment is determined, albeit imprecisely, resulting in a sequence of letters called a "read." Each letter in a read is assigned a quality value, which estimates the probability that a sequencing error occurred in determining that letter. Reads are typically cut off after about 500 letters, where sequencing errors become endemic. We report on a set of procedures that (1) corrects most of the sequencing errors, (2) changes quality values accordingly, and (3) produces a list of "overlaps," i.e., pairs of reads that plausibly come from overlapping parts of the genome. Our procedures, which we call collectively the "UMD Overlapper," can be run iteratively and as a preprocessor for other assemblers. We tested the UMD Overlapper on Celera's Drosophila reads. When we replaced Celera's overlap procedures in the front end of their assembler, it was able to produce a significantly improved genome.  相似文献
