Current knowledge of the effects of dietary fibre and associated components on protein digestibility and utilization are discussed. Based on the literature it could be shown that the implications and mechanisms behind the effect of soluble and insoluble dietary fibre on protein digestibility and utilization are quite different. Insoluble dietary fibre will increase faecal bulk and faecal nitrogen excretion is primarily due to and increased excretion of cell wall bound protein. Contrary to this, soluble dietary fibre increase faecal bulk and faecal nitrogen due to an increased excretion of microbial nitrogen. A matter of controversy is the influence of dietary fibre on endogenous nitrogen excretion and factors affecting the losses of nitrogen in this way. It is not known if fibre acts as a secretogogue.  相似文献

Background  

Gastrointestinal nematode (GIN) infection is one of the main constraints to sheep production both in temperate and tropical countries. Economic losses caused by GIN are related to decreased production, treatment costs and even animal death. The present paper was aimed at assessing the anthelmintic efficacy (based on faecal egg count reduction) of moxidectin and ivermectin both admistered per os at dose rate of 0.2 mg/Kg body weight and the benefit of anthelmintic treatments on milk production in a commercial dairy sheep farms in central Italy whose animals were naturally infected by GIN.  相似文献

An increase in dietary protein for larvae of the black carpet beetle, Attagenus megatoma, resulted in a decreased digestibility that was partly compensated for by substantial increases in both the gross and net efficiency of conversion of digested food into body substance. When the dietary amino acids were in a free form (not protein bound), the rate of food consumption was significantly lower; however, the greater ease of digestion and more efficient utilization of the amino acid diet resulted in a growth rate comparable to that observed on an all-casein diet. Maximum larval weight gain occurred on the stock culture medium, probably due to a combination of a faster rate of food consumption, ease of digestion, and more efficient utilization. Larvae preferentially selected protein from some of the diets, but when no selection was possible, the efficiency of N utilization was inversely proportional to the concentration of N in the diet. The concentrations of faecal uric acid decreased with an increase in dietary protein concentration, especially when expressed as a percentage of the soluble faecal nitrogen.  相似文献

The present study was undertaken to investigate how three different fibre sources, sugar beet pulp, soya bean hulls and pectin residue, constituting 15% of diets for growing pigs, influenced daily body gain, feed conversion, apparent faecal digestibility and nitrogen and energy balances. Eight castrated crossbreed pigs (30-80 kg live weight) were used in a replicated 4 x 4 Latin-square design with one control diet and three fibre containing diets. Daily body weight gain and feed conversion were not affected by the dietary treatments. The apparent faecal digestibility of organic matter (OM) and energy were significantly lower for the fibre diets (OM: 0.81-0.85; energy: 0.78-0.83) compared to the control diet (OM: 0.88; energy: 0.86). The apparent faecal digestibility of crude protein (CP) was lower for the fibre diets (0.71-0.78) compared to the control diet (0.83), although it was only significantly lower for the sugar beet pulp and pectin residue diets. The pectin residue diet, which contained the highest amount of dietary fibre, lignin and insoluble non-starch polysaccharides, had the lowest digestibility of OM, CP and energy. There was a tendency (p = 0.07) for a diet effect on retained nitrogen in proportion to digested nitrogen, where the sugar beet pulp and pectin residue diets had numerically the highest values. Heat production and retained energy in proportion to metabolizable energy intake were not affected by fibre inclusion. It was concluded that the inclusion of sugar beet pulp, soya bean hulls and pectin residue in diets for growing pigs decreased the apparent faecal digestibility and in the diets with sugar beet pulp and pectin residue higher utilization of digested nitrogen for retention compensated for the lower amount of digested nitrogen.  相似文献

The use of fruit-based diets by a small arboreal marsupial, the woolly opossum (Caluromys philander) was studied to elucidate the mechanisms used to compensate for a low dietary protein concentration. The passage of a liquid phase digesta marker (Cr-EDTA) through the gut was significantly faster when animals were fed a diet containing 0.45% N compared to that measured on a diet containing 0.90% N. The size of the gut of the two groups was similar except that the caecum of animals fed 0.45% N was significantly larger than in those animals fed 0.90% N. Animals fed a diet of 0.45% N ate significantly more food than those fed higher levels of nitrogen but there was no significant difference in the dry matter digestibility of the diet. The maintenance nitrogen requirement of the animals was 176 mg dietary N or 146 mg truly digestible nitrogen per kg metabolic body mass, with low losses of non-dietary faecal nitrogen being notable. There was no significant difference between diets in any measured parameter of urea metabolism and all animals recycled between 60% and 80% of the endogenously synthesised urea. The influence of dietary nitrogen (N) available in the rumen on the efficiency of microbial protein production was examined for 43 predominantly low-roughage diets given to cattle or sheep with rumen and duodenal (re-entrant) cannulae. The minimum amount of available N required for efficient microbial protein production was 2.0 g/100 g of organic matter actually digested in the rumen. When the diet supplied 2.7 g of available N/100 g of organic matter actually digested in the rumen, there was no net utilisation of recycled N.From this information, concentrations of N in organic matter required in low-roughage diets differing in organic matter digestibility and availability of dietary N have been calculated. Also a method of calculating the quantities of amino acid N and of particular amino acids absorbed from the small intestine from a knowledge of the diet composition is presented.  相似文献

Alfalfa protein is poorly utilised by ruminants due to its rapid degradation in rumen. The objective of the study was to assess the influence of spraying tannic acid (TA) on chopped alfalfa hay on in vitro rumen fermentation and nitrogen (N) retention by sheep. Alfalfa hay with and without TA was fed to sheep to determine nutrient digestibility and N balance. TA was sprayed on chopped alfalfa at three concentrations to determine its effect on in vitro fermentation of dry matter (DM) and N balance in sheep. Final TA concentrations were 0, 30, 60 and 90 g TA per kg DM. The control was sprayed with the same amount of water but without TA. In vitro DM degradation and the production of gas, ammonium-N (NH4-N) and short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) were measured. TA-sprayed alfalfa and the control were fed to sheep to determine nutrient digestibility and N retention. Addition of TA had no influence on the extent and rate of gas production but significantly decreased NH4-N concentration at 30 (P < 0.05), 60 and 90 (P < 0.0001) g/kg DM. Addition of polyethylene glycol (PEG) to TA-sprayed alfalfa increased NH4-N to a level comparable to non-TA-sprayed alfalfa. Spraying of alfalfa with TA significantly decreased (P < 0.05) isovalerate but did not affect the total and individual SCFA acid production. Tannic acid significantly (P < 0.05) reduced in vitro true degradability of DM (IVTD) after 24 h incubation at levels of 60 and 90 g TA per kg DM. Neutral-detergent fibre digestibility (dNDF) after 24 h (P < 0.01), 60 and 90 (P < 0.0001) g TA per kg DM. The effect of TA on either IVTD or dNDF was not significant (P > 0.05) after 48 h of incubation. There was a strong linear relationship between percentage increase in gas production due to PEG and protein precipitation capacity (R2 = 0.94). N digestibility was significantly reduced with all three levels of TA additions. However, the proportion of urine-N to total N output was reduced by adding 60 g (P < 0.05) and 90 g (P < 0.01) TA per kg DM. Serum metabolites and liver enzymes were not affected by TA (P > 0.05). Higher faecal N as the TA level increased indicates incomplete dissociation of tannin-protein complexes post ruminally. Factors affecting dissociation of tannin-protein complexes need further study.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to evaluate the anthelmintic efficacy of Iris hookeriana Linn. rhizome against gastrointestinal nematodes of sheep. A worm motility inhibition assay was used for in vitro study and a faecal egg count reduction assay was used for an in vivo study. The in vitro study revealed anthelmintic effects of crude aqueous extracts and crude ethanolic extracts on live Trichuris ovis worms (P < or = 0.05) as evident from their paralysis and/or death at 8 h after exposure. The aqueous extracts of I. hookeriana resulted in a mean worm motility inhibition of 54.0%, while ethanolic extracts resulted in a mean worm motility inhibition of 84.6%. The mean mortality index of aqueous extracts was 0.55, while for ethanolic extracts it was 0.85. The lethal concentration 50 for aqueous extracts was 0.45 mg ml- 1 and for ethanolic extracts it was 0.15 mg ml- 1. The in vivo anthelmintic activity of aqueous and ethanolic extracts of I. hookeriana in sheep naturally infected with mixed species of gastrointestinal nematodes demonstrated a maximum (45.62%) egg count reduction in sheep treated with ethanolic extracts at 2 g kg- 1 body weight on day 10 after treatment, closely followed by ethanolic extracts at 1 g kg- 1 body weight on day 10 after treatment (43.54% egg count reduction). The aqueous extracts resulted in a maximum of 31.53% reduction in faecal egg counts on day 10 after treatment with 1 g kg- 1 body weight. Thus ethanolic extracts exhibited greater anthelmintic activity under both in vitro and in vivo conditions; this could be due to the presence of alcohol-soluble active ingredients in I. hookeriana. From the present study it can be suggested that I. hookeriana rhizome exhibited significant anthelmintic activity against gastrointestinal nematodes of sheep and has the potential to contribute to the control of gastrointestinal nematode parasites of small ruminants.  相似文献

The main objective of this study was to investigate the relationship between partitioning and isotopic fractionation of nitrogen (N) in sheep consuming diets with varying ratios of N to water-soluble carbohydrate (WSC). Six non-lactating sheep were offered a constant dry matter (DM) allowance with one of three ratios of dietary N/WSC, achieved by adding sucrose and urea to lucerne pellets. A replicated 3 dietary treatments (Low, Medium and High N/WSC) × 3 (collection periods) and a Latin square design was used, with two sheep assigned to each treatment in each period. Feed, faeces, urine, plasma, wool, muscle and liver samples were collected and analysed for 15N concentration. Nitrogen intake and outputs in faeces and urine were measured for each sheep using 6-day total collections. Blood urea N (BUN) and urinary excretion of purine derivative were also measured. Treatment effects were tested using general ANOVA; the relationships between measured variables were analysed by linear regression. BUN and N intake increased by 46% and 35%, respectively, when N/WSC increased 2.5-fold. However, no indication of change in microbial protein synthesis was detected. Results indicated effects of dietary treatments on urinary N/faecal N, faecal N/N intake and retained N/N intake. In addition, the linear relationships between plasma δ15N and urinary N/N intake and muscle δ15N and retained N/N intake based on individual measurements showed the potential of using N isotopic fractionation as an easy-to-use indicator of N partitioning when N supply exceeds that required to match energy supply in the diet.  相似文献

The most abundant mineral in the body of animals is Ca, which has crucial importance for the regulation of various processes. The maintenance of Ca balance has become more challenging, especially in lactating ruminants, owing to the increased milk yields and thus Ca requirement. To determine the Ca requirement, factors such as Ca secretion via milk or Ca deposition in body tissues and conception products are summed up to the net Ca requirement. Nevertheless, dietary Ca cannot be completely utilised by the animal to cover the net Ca requirement, therefore a value for the efficiency of Ca utilisation is applied, which is the maximum proportion of Ca from the feed that the animal can use for covering the net requirement. However, current estimates for the efficiency of Ca utilisation are inconsistent. Therefore, the objective of the present meta-analysis was to estimate the efficiency of Ca utilisation for ruminants, considering the Ca supply of the animal. A data set of 223 observations was compiled from 37 studies, including data on cattle and small ruminants. Standardised Ca digestibility was calculated from data on Ca intake and faecal Ca excretion, corrected for faecal endogenous losses. Furthermore, a data subset on only lactating ruminants was created. For this subset, Ca excretion via faeces and urine and standardised Ca digestibility were related to the Ca supply of the animal. An exponential function was fitted to standardised digestibility data in response to Ca concentration in the diet and Ca supply, revealing that standardised Ca digestibility decreased with increasing dietary Ca concentration and Ca supply. The median for standardised Ca digestibility was 40%, with a remarkable variation between 9% and 88%. In response to Ca supply, faecal Ca excretion increased in a strong linear manner (slope = 0.76, R2 = 0.96). Excretion of Ca via urine was very low even when Ca supply was very high. To conclude, Ca digestibility is a suitable indicator for the efficiency of Ca utilisation, since excessive Ca is almost completely excreted in faeces; however, Ca digestibility has to be determined at a Ca supply level below the requirement of the animal. To date, only very limited number of data have been reported for such supply conditions. Comparative studies using various Ca sources are suggested for future studies but should be conducted using a marginal Ca supply level.  相似文献

本研究探讨了通过收集器不同粪便收集时间和饲料中肉骨粉(MBM)含量对异育银鲫干物质、蛋白、能量、磷的表观消化率 (ADC) 影响.不同梯度(0, 20, 40, 60, 80 ,100%)的肉骨粉替代鱼粉(FM) 蛋白配制成六种等氮 (粗蛋白: 410 g/kg) 等能 (总能: 18 kJ/g) 的饲料,通过11周的饲养实验,实验开始后2周开始收集粪便,收集时间分别是:排粪后 1 min, 投喂后4h和16h. 结果表明,干物质、蛋白、能量、磷的消化率明显随粪便收集时间增加而升高(p<0.05),但在高肉骨粉替代饲料中差异不显著(p>0.05). 干物质、蛋白、能量、磷的消化率随饲料中肉骨粉含量的增加呈线性或近线性下降.因此,在消化率测定中应该尽快收集排出的粪便以保证消化率的真实性.消化率是影响肉骨粉利用一个因素.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Five ruminally and duodenally cannulated Kazakh male lambs (30 ± 2.75 kg) maintained singly in a metabolic cage were used in a 5 × 5 Latin square experiment to investigate the effect of supplementing a ration with five different levels of distillers’ grape residue (DGR) on ruminal degradability, whole tract digestibility and nitrogen (N) metabolism of growing lambs. The rations were isoenergetic and isonitrogenous and contained 0, 3.85, 7.70, 11.55 and 15.41% DGR (DM basis). Each experimental period lasted for 18 d: 10 d for adaptation to the dietary treatment and 8 d for faecal, urinary, ruminal and duodenal digesta sample collections. The outflow rate of ruminal digesta increased (p = 0.032) linearly with the increased level of dietary neutral detergent fibre content, caused by the supplementation of DGR. As a result, the effective degradability of dry matter and crude protein decreased significantly with the treatments. Although the dietary intake of N, duodenal flow of total N, and the endogenous N at the duodenum were not affected by experimental treatments, N fractions in the digesta were altered. Ruminal microbial N decreased (p < 0.01) linearly; in contrast, ruminal un-degradable protein increased linearly (p < 0.01) in response to the increased addition of DGR. Although there was no significant difference in faecal N among treatments, N retention was increased linearly (p = 0.014), owing to the remarkable reduction (p = 0.016) of urinary N excretion with an increasing level of DGR. The results indicate that the DGR has some potential benefits of increasing the supply of bypass protein and of improving the utilisation efficiency of N for sheep. Therefore, the supplementation of DGR in ruminant feeding is recommended at levels not exceeding 10% of the diet.  相似文献

Under irrigated arid conditions, organic fertiliser rich in slowly decomposable nitrogen (N) and carbon (C) is needed for soil fertility maintenance. Feeding ruminants with condensed tannins will lower ruminal protein degradation, reduce urinary N excretion and might increase the faecal fraction of slowly decomposable N. Supplementation with activated charcoal (AC) might enrich manure with slowly degrading C. Therefore, we investigated the effects of feeding quebracho tannin extract (QTE) and AC on the N balance of goats, the efficiency of microbial protein synthesis in the rumen (EMPS) and the composition of faeces. The feeding trial comprised three periods; in each period, 12 male Boer goats (28 ± 3.9 kg live weight) were assigned to six treatments: a Control diet (per kg diet 500 g grass hay and 500 g concentrate) and to further five treatments the Control diet was supplemented with QTE (20 g and 40 g/kg; diets QTE2 and QTE4, respectively), with AC (15 g and 30 g/kg, diets AC1.5 and AC3.0, respectively) and a mixture of QTE (20 g/kg) plus AC (15 g/kg) (diet QTEAC). In addition to the N balance, EMPS was calculated from daily excretions of purine derivatives, and the composition of faecal N was determined. There was no effect of QTE and AC supplementation on the intake of organic matter (OM), N and fibre, but apparent total tract digestibility of OM was reduced (= 0.035). Feeding QTE induced a shift in N excretion from urine to faeces (p ≤ 0.001) without altering N retention. Total N excretion tended to decrease with QTE treatments (p = 0.053), but EMPS was not different between treatments. Faecal C excretion was higher in QTE and AC treatments (= 0.001) compared with the Control, while the composition of faecal N differed only in concentration of undigested dietary N (p = 0.001). The results demonstrate that QTE can be included into diets of goats up to 40 g/kg, without affecting N utilisation, but simultaneously increasing the excretion of slowly decomposable N and C fractions. Feeding AC up to 30 g/kg of the diet increases slowly degradable faecal C concentration, without negative effects on N metabolism of goats.  相似文献

The use of faecal marker concentration curves, in conjunction with compartmental analysis, is examined as a method for predicting faecal output in ruminants. Formulae for faecal production are derived for the various multicompartment models currently used to interpret marker concentration data. A comparison of observed and model-derived estimates of faecal dry matter production using three different markers is given for sheep consuming hay or a mixed diet.  相似文献

Achillea millifolium Linn., commonly called 'Pehl-ghasa', is used by farmers in traditional animal health care as a vermifuge. The objective of this study was to evaluate the anthelmintic efficacy of crude aqueous extracts and crude ethanolic extracts of entire A. millifolium against the gastrointestinal nematodes of sheep. The worm motility inhibition assay was used for in vitro studies and faecal egg count reduction assay was used for in vivo studies. In vitro studies revealed significant anthelmintic effects of aqueous extracts and ethanolic extracts on live Haemonchus contortus worms (P < 0.05) as evident from their paralysis and/or death at 8 h post exposure. Aqueous extracts of A. millifolium resulted in a mean worm motility inhibition of 94.44%, while ethanolic extracts resulted in mean worm motility inhibition of 88.88%. The mean mortality index of aqueous extracts was 0.95 while for ethanolic extracts it was 0.9. The lethal concentration 50 was 0.05 mg ml(-1) for aqueous extracts and 0.11 mg ml(-1) for ethanolic extracts. The in vivo anthelmintic activity of aqueous and ethanolic extracts of A. millifolium demonstrated a maximum (88.40%) nematode egg count reduction in sheep treated with aqueous extracts at 2 g kg(-1) body weight on day 15 after treatment. Ethanolic extracts resulted in a maximum of 76.53% reduction in faecal egg counts on day 15 after treatment with 2 g kg(-1) body weight. Thus, the aqueous extracts exhibited greater anthelmintic activity under both in vitro and in vivo conditions, and could be due to the presence of water-soluble active principle/s in A. millifolium. It is concluded that the entire plant of A. millifolium possesses significant anthelmintic activity and could be a potential alternative for treating cases of helminth infections in ruminants.  相似文献

This study examined the effect of substituting dry wormwood (Artemisia sp.) for rice straw in sheep diets on intake and apparent digestibility in vivo, nitrogen (N) balance and ruminal fermentation characteristics. Four Corriedale×Polwarth sheep (51.7 ± 1.3 kg) were individually housed in metabolism cages and fed diets (ad. libitum) with a 70:30 forage to concentrate ratio (DM basis), in which the basal rice straw was substituted with 0 (Control), 30 (LW), 50 (MW) or 100 (HW) g/kg of dry wormwood. The experimental design was a 4×4 latin square design in which 10 days of dietary adaptation was followed by 6 days of total feces and urine collection in each period. Rumen fluid was collected from a stomach tube at −0.5, 0.5, 1, 2, 4, and 8 h after the morning feed on day 6 of each collection period and analyzed for volatile fatty acids (VFA). The intakes of dry matter (DM), organic matter intake (OM), crude protein (CP), ether extract (EE), neutral detergent fibre (NDF) and acid detergent fibre (ADF) were higher (P<0.05) in sheep fed diets containing wormwood, than those fed the Control diet. Compared to the Control diet, CP digestibility was higher (P<0.05) in sheep fed MW and N intake, retained N, EE digestibility, urinary purine derivatives and microbial N yield were higher (P<0.05) in sheep fed diets, containing wormwood. Rumen pH was unaffected by treatment. Rumen NH3-N and VFA concentrations were similar across treatments except that most values for diets containing wormwood were higher (P<0.05) than those for the control diet within the first 2 h of feeding. The non-glucogenic acid ratio was also similar across Control, LW and MW treatments, but it was generally lower in MW versus the Control treatment. In conclusion, substituting wormwood for rice straw in the sheep diets increased feed intake, rumen fermentation, in vivo digestibility, N retention and microbial N yield, particularly at the medium and high levels of wormwood inclusion.  相似文献

Three experiments were conducted to determine (1) the dose of glutamate needed to alter fermentation and nitrogen (N) partitioning in a continuous culture system, (2) the effect of supplemental glutamate in diets varying in rumen-undegradable protein on fermentation and N partitioning in a continuous culture system, and (3) the effect of dietary supplemental glutamate on the lactational performance of mid-lactation dairy cows, total tract nutrient digestibility, and ruminal microbial N synthesis. In experiment 1, the equivalent of 0, 40, or 80 g of supplemental glutamate per cow per day was added to a basal diet. The dietary treatments were evaluated in a continuous culture system. Glutamate decreased protein digestion and microbial growth while increasing non-ammonia, non-microbial N. Within the doses tested, the equivalent of 80 g glutamate per cow per day most effectively increased non-ammonia, non-microbial N. In experiment 2, dietary treatments consisted of diets formulated to have low rumen-undegradable protein (LRUP; 62 g/kg DM), low rumen-undegradable protein plus the equivalent of 80 g glutamate per cow per day (LRUP + G), and high rumen-undegradable protein [HRUP; 68 g/kg dry matter (DM)]. The dietary treatments were evaluated in a continuous culture system. When added to a diet low in rumen-undegradable protein, glutamate tended to decrease DM and organic matter (OM) digestibility, decreased total volatile fatty acid (VFA) production, increased fermenter pH, increased feed N converted to microbial N, and had no effect on microbial N production. The LRUP + G diet was similar to the HRUP diet and different from the LRUP diet in feed N converted to microbial N and ammonia N concentration. In experiment 3, 40 Holstein cows were utilized in a crossover study to test the effects of two dietary treatments: 0 or 80 g of supplemental glutamate per cow per day. The addition of glutamate to the diet of lactating dairy cows did not improve lactational performance or nutrient digestibility. Based on the results from these in vitro and in vivo experiments, the addition of glutamate to lactating cow diets is not recommended.  相似文献

The aim of the experiment was to determine the impact of heat stress on nutrient digestibility and nitrogen balance in sheep fed silages differing in fibre quality. The digestibility trial was conducted at three different ambient temperatures (15°C, 25°C and 35°C for 24 h/d). The tested brown-midrib maize (Bm) silage had a higher nutrient digestibility, except for ether extract (EE) and a higher metabolisable energy (ME) content than the control maize (Con) silage. Nitrogen (N) excretion with faeces was higher but N excretion with urine was lower for sheep fed Bm silage, subsequently N balance did not differ between the two silages. Temperature had no effect on nutrient digestibility, except for crude protein (CP), but N excretion with urine was lower at elevated temperatures. A diet by temperature interaction was found for dry matter (DM) and organic matter (OM) digestibility. When the ambient temperature increased from 15°C to 25°C, the DM and OM digestibility increased in animals fed Con silage, but decreased in animals fed Bm silage. Concomitantly, ME estimated from digestible nutrients was higher for Bm than for Con at 15°C, but no differences were found at 25°C and 35°C. Effects of diet by temperature interaction, furthermore, were observed for EE and CP digestibility. Therefore, forage quality has to be considered when feeding heat-stressed animals.  相似文献

It is difficult to separate an age-dependent fall in nitrogen use efficiency (NUE; N balance/N intake) in growing ruminants from a progressively decrease in animal protein requirements over time. This study examined the effect of dietary protein content on N partitioning, digestibility and N isotopic discrimination between the animal and its diet (Δ15Nanimal-diet) evaluated at two different fattening periods (early v. late). Twenty-four male Romane lambs (age: 19 ± 4.0 days; BW: 8.3 ± 1.39 kg) were equally allocated to three dietary CP treatments (15%, 17% and 20% CP on a DM basis). Lambs were reared with their mothers until weaning, thereafter housed in individual pens until slaughter (45 kg BW). During the post-weaning period, lambs were allocated twice (early fattening (30 days post-weaning) and late fattening (60 days post-weaning)) to metabolic cages for digestibility and N balance study. When diet CP content increased, the average daily gain of lambs increased (P < 0.05) while the age at slaughter decreased (P = 0.01), but no effect was observed on feed efficiency (P > 0.10). Diet CP content had limited effect on lamb carcass traits. Higher fibre digestibility was observed at the early v. late fattening period (P < 0.001). The N intake and the urinary N excretion increased when diet CP content increased (P < 0.001) and when shifting from early to late fattening period (P < 0.001). Faecal N excretion (P = 0.14) and N balance (P > 0.10) were not affected by diet CP content. Nitrogen digestibility increased (P < 0.001) as the diet CP content increased and on average it was greater at late v. early fattening period (P = 0.02). The NUE decreased (P = 0.001) as the diet CP content increased and as the lamb became older (P < 0.001). However, the age-dependent fall in NUE observed was lower at high v. low dietary CP content (CP × age interaction; P = 0.04). The Δ15Nanimal-diet was positively correlated (P < 0.05) with N intake (r = 0.59), excretion of faecal N (r = 0.41), urinary N (r = 0.69) and total manure N (r = 0.64), while negatively correlated with NUE (r = −0.57). Overall, the experiment showed NUE was lower in older lambs and when lambs were fed high diet CP content, and that Δ15Nanimal-diet was a useful indicator not only for NUE but also for urinary N excretion, which is a major environmental pollution factor on farm.  相似文献
