The objective of the paper is to determine whether the agri-environmental schemes included in the rural development programme of Emilia-Romagna (Italy) have played a role in enhancing the nature value of farmland in that region. An indicator is developed for biodiversity friendly farming practices (BFFP) and its level and distribution at the municipality level is measured, using data derived from the two last national agricultural censuses, year 2000 and 2010. Thereafter, the relationship between BFFP and participation in rural development measures is analysed by way of spatial econometric techniques. The main result of the paper are consistent with the expectation that RDPs have an impact on how BFFP changes. However, measures supporting organic farming contribute to the evolution of its distribution in a positive manner, whilst the other measures investigated, such as integrated production, do not. The paper also highlights the fact that these effects have significant spatial correlations.  相似文献

With considerably increased coverage of weather information in the news media in recent years in many countries, there is also more demand for data that are applicable and useful for everyday life. Both the perception of the thermal component of weather as well as the appropriate clothing for thermal comfort result from the integral effects of all meteorological parameters relevant for heat exchange between the body and its environment. Regulatory physiological processes can affect the relative importance of meteorological parameters, e.g. wind velocity becomes more important when the body is sweating. In order to take into account all these factors, it is necessary to use a heat-balance model of the human body. The physiological equivalent temperature (PET) is based on the Munich Energy-balance Model for Individuals (MEMI), which models the thermal conditions of the human body in a physiologically relevant way. PET is defined as the air temperature at which, in a typical indoor setting (without wind and solar radiation), the heat budget of the human body is balanced with the same core and skin temperature as under the complex outdoor conditions to be assessed. This way PET enables a layperson to compare the integral effects of complex thermal conditions outside with his or her own experience indoors. On hot summer days, for example, with direct solar irradiation the PET value may be more than 20 K higher than the air temperature, on a windy day in winter up to 15 K lower. Global Scope and Background  The study was aimed at presenting the methodology of the process eco-indicator, in relation to hard coal mines, and thereby making evaluation of the impact of the mine’s coal extraction process on the environment. The life cycle of a mine is made up of three phases: opening and developing the mine’s deposit, extraction of the mine’s deposit, closing the mine. Methods  The assessment of environmental influence of mining operation of a colliery was executed on a basis of the life cycle analysis, in accordance with the standard series PN-EN 14040. The environmental loads caused by individual unit processes were calculated by means of the aforementioned methodology with division into the basic influence categories: human health, ecosystem quality and natural resources. The obtained values of eco-indicators for the individual unit processes made it possible to compare the unit-process-caused environmental loads. Mean values of the eco-indicators of the individual unit processes were calculated by means of the inventory analysis covering 38 collieries. Next, these indicators were used to compare environmental load values by each similar process in a colliery. A total eco-indicator was calculated for colliery by summing up the eco-indicators of the individual unit processes. The eco-indicators, structured as above, were calculated for the phase of opening out a deposit and for the phase of extraction. Results and Discussion  The model mine in the phase of extraction of a deposit causes a total environmental load which expressed in points of the eco-indicator 99 amounts to 23.9 [MEw]. In the ‘human health’ category losses amount to 8.4 per cent, in the ‘quality of ecosystem’ 0.6 per cent and in the ‘resourses’ category 91 per cent. The greatest losses in all categories are caused by the process of getting body of coal and the next greatest ones are:
–  In the ‘human health’ category-cleaning coal at a preparation plant (250.0 kEw),
–  In the ‘quality of ecosystem’ category-cleaning coal at a preparation plant (25.0 kEw),
–  In the ‘resources’ category-entry driving by means of explosives (745.7 kEw).
Value of the eco-indicator 99 per 1 Mg (tonne) of coal extracted at the model mine amounts to 9.55 Ew. On a basis of this methodology, calculations of the value of the eco-indicator 99 were performed for a real working colliery (extraction of 1.23 million tonnes in 2001). An inventory of characteristic quantities of individual unit processes connected with the extraction of this colliery was prepared. The total environmental load of this mine was 11.14 MEw (in the ‘human health’ category losses amounted to 1.9 per cent, in the ‘quality of ecosystem’ category 0.5 per cent, and in the resources’ category 91.6 per cent). The greatest losses in all categories were caused by the process of getting body of coal which amounted to 10.8 MEw, and next the process of driving a heading by means of heading machine which amounted to 130.9 kEw. The value of the eco-indicator 99 for 1 Mg (tonne) of coal extracted in 2001 at the above-mentioned mine amounts to 9.06 Ew and is lower than the value of the eco-indicator 99 calculated for the model mine. Conclusion  By means of the presented methodology it is possible to calculate environmental loads caused by individual unit processes with division into the basic categories of influence: human health, quality of ecosystem and natural resources. The calculated values of the eco-indicators of the individual unit processes enable to make comparisons of environmental loads and eventual decision making on changes in the ecological policy of a mine. Recommendation and Perspective (Outlook)  The presented LCA methodology can be used to compare the operation of individual mines in the aspect of their influence on the environment. If the data of the same type with regard to unit processes are at disposal, then the mines can be ranked. Based on the LCA’s results, it is possible to make capital decisions connected with modernisation of specific production processes.  相似文献

The Perceived Temperature (PT) is an equivalent temperature based on a complete heat budget model of the human body. It has proved its suitability for numerous applications across a wide variety of scales from micro to global and is successfully used both in daily forecasts and climatological studies. PT is designed for staying outdoors and is defined as the air temperature of a reference environment in which the thermal perception would be the same as in the actual environment. The calculation is performed for a reference subject with an internal heat production of 135 W m−2 (who is walking at 4 km h−1 on flat ground). In the reference environment, the mean radiant temperature equals the air temperature and wind velocity is reduced to a slight draught. The water vapour pressure remains unchanged. Under warm/humid conditions, however, it is implicitly related to a relative humidity of 50%. Clothing is adapted in order to achieve thermal comfort. If this is impossible, cold or heat stress will occur, respectively. The assessment of thermal perception by means of PT is based on Fanger’s Predicted Mean Vote (PMV) together with additional model extensions taking account of stronger deviations from thermal neutrality. This is performed using a parameterisation based on a two-node model. In the cold, it allows the mean skin temperature to drop below the comfort value. In the heat, it assesses additionally the enthalpy of sweat-moistened skin and of wet clothes. PT has the advantages of being self-explanatory due to its deviation from air temperature and being—via PMV—directly linked to a thermo-physiologically-based scale of thermal perception that is widely used and has stood the test of time. In scientific literature there is a wealth of information about the ecological and life-history traits of plant species. This information would be very valuable for a functional analysis of the response of species and communities to environmental changes and subsequent vulnerability/viability analysis or predictive modelling. However, the information is scattered in a multiple of different sources. Researchers often are discouraged from searching all available information. We are compiling a database of plant traits of the flora of Germany. Our aim is to create a comprehensive, well documented database to be made freely accessible within FLORAWEB, an Internet portal of the German Federal Agency for Nature Conservation (BfN). An interactive user-interface will enable the data to be readily used for extracting biological risk factors and for decision-making in nature conservation.  相似文献

Onions (Allium cepa L.) are plagued by a number of bacterial pathogens including Pantoea ananatis, P. agglomerans, Burkholderia cepacia, Enterobacter cloacae, Pectobacterium carotovorum subsp. carotovorum, Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. axonopodis and several Pseudomonas spp. We developed a semi-selective medium, termed onion extract medium (OEM), to selectively and rapidly isolate bacteria pathogenic to and associated with onions and onion-related samples including bulbs, seeds, sets, transplant seedlings, soil and water. Most strains of interest grow sufficiently on OEM in 24 h at 28 °C for tentative identification based on colony morphology, facilitating further characterization by microbiological and/or molecular means.  相似文献

This paper assesses the usefulness of the Difference Index (Metzger, Shapiro, Mosimann &; Vinton, 1968) for predicting, from amino acid compositions, whether two proteins are related or unrelated. It is concluded that, with a 5 % probability of false identification, Difference Index values less than 10-0 indicate relatedness and values greater than 26·8 indicate unrelatedness. A large proportion of protein pairs have Difference Index values in the region 10·0–26·8 and cannot therefore be reliably identified as related or unrelated by this criterion.  相似文献

Production of lactic acid using Lactobacillus delbrueckii NRRL B445 recently renamed L. rhamnosus was studied in continuously recycled packed reactors at pH 6.3 and 42° C. Four inert adsorbent supports were used for immobilization: Raschig rings of sintered glass (Schott, FRG), beads of sintered glass (Schott), beads of porous glass (Poraver; Dennert, FRG) and irregular ceramic particles (Otto Feuerfest, FRG). The best support was found to be the beads of sintered glass, yielding the highest volumetric lactic acid productivity. Zeta potentials of L. rhamnosus showed the cells to be negatively charged at all pHs studied, the charge becoming less negative with increasing ionic strength. The surface charge did not control adhesion. A comparison between the immobilization carried out in batch and continuous tests with the different supports demonstrated that extrapolation from batch adsorption curves to continuous operation can introduce large errors. The effect of dilution rate was also stidied: a saturation concentration of adsorbed cells was achieved at all dilution rates, i.e., the immobilized cell component was almost invariant. Different diameters of Poraver beads were tested; clear evidence for mass transfer limitation was shown. Finally, the effects of pH and substrate concentration under immobilization were evaluated. The results indicate that pHs above or below the optimum for suspended cell systems can be used in the immobilized reactor while maintaining lactic acid productivity. To simplify downstream processing by keeping the glucose concentration close to zero in the effluent, the glucose concentration in the feed has to be chosen in conjunction with the dilution rate. Purpose  

As capture fishery production has reached its limits and global demand for aquatic products is still increasing, aquaculture has become the world’s fastest growing animal production sector. In attempts to evaluate the environmental consequences of this rapid expansion, life cycle assessment (LCA) has become a frequently used method. The present review of current peer-reviewed literature focusing on LCA of aquaculture systems is intended to clarify the methodological choices made, identify possible data gaps, and provide recommendations for future development within this field of research. The results of this review will also serve as a start-up activity of the EU FP7 SEAT (Sustaining Ethical Aquaculture Trade) project, which aims to perform several LCA studies on aquaculture systems in Asia over the next few years.  相似文献

Purpose

Technologies can contribute to sustainable development (e.g., improving living conditions) and at the same time cause sustainability problems (e.g., emissions). Decisions on alternative technologies should thus ideally be based on the principle to minimize the latter. Analyzing environmental, economic, and social aspects related to technologies supports decisions by identifying the “more sustainable” technology. This paper focuses on social issues. First, it discusses the applicability of the social life cycle assessment (SLCA) guidelines for a comparative technology analysis, taking the example of two case studies in developing countries. Indicating technologies as “sustainable” also means that they are indeed operated over the expected lifetime, which, in development projects, is often not guaranteed. Consequently, social aspects related to implementation conditions should be considered in an SLCA study as well. Thus, a second focus is laid on identifying appropriate indicators to address these aspects.

Methods

First, the SLCA guidelines were examined with regard to applying this product-related approach to two real case studies (analysis of technologies/plants for water supply and for decentralized fuel production) for a comparative technology analysis. Suitable indicators are proposed. To address the second focus, a literature research on technology assessment and implementation in developing countries was conducted. Moreover, socioeconomic studies in the investigation areas of the case studies were consulted. Based on this, indicators addressing implementation conditions were identified from the SLCA guidelines and additional literature.

Results and discussion

The study shows social issues and indicators found in the SLCA guidelines and considered suitable for a comparative technology analysis in the case studies. However, for a sustainability assessment of technologies, especially in developing countries, further indicators are required to address technology implementation conditions. A set of additional social indicators like reported trust in institutions or fluctuation of personnel is proposed. Though these indicators were derived based on specific case studies, they can also be suggested to other technologies and are not necessarily limited to developing countries.

Conclusions

The study pointed out that an application of the SLCA guidelines considering the whole life cycle was not (yet) feasible for the case studies considered. This is mainly due to the lack of data. Regarding technology implementation, it was examined which indicators are available in this SLCA approach and which could additionally be integrated and applied. This is relevant as a potential contribution of technologies to sustainable development can only be achieved when the technologies are successfully implemented.  相似文献

In many dryland regions, traditional pastoral land use strategies are exposed to various drivers such as demographic or socio-economic change. This may lead to an adjustment of livelihood strategies and behavior of pastoral households, involving a change in attitudes toward livestock, pasture condition and social norms. We use an agent-based model to examine long-term social-ecological consequences and implications for system resilience of such behavioral changes (e.g., giving up a social norm). The model captures feedback between pastures, livestock and household livelihood in a common property grazing system. We systematically compare three stylized household behavioral types (traditional, maximizer and satisficer) that differ in their preferences for livestock, their compliance with social norms on pasture resting and how they are influenced by the behavior of others. Simulation results show that the traditional, norm-abiding household type maintains the pasture condition, provided that overall household numbers do not exceed a critical threshold. In contrast, a switch to a maximizer type that ignores norms may lead to long-term pasture degradation and livestock loss, pushing the system to an undesirable state. A change toward a new satisficing household type that constrains its herd size while diversifying its income sources can lead to improved pasture conditions and higher total livestock numbers, even with increased household numbers. We conclude that changes in household behavior have strong implications for long-term social-ecological system dynamics and have to be considered to assess the resilience of pastoral common property systems.  相似文献
