Climatic fluctuations usually change the intensity of existing interactions. Thus, in the context of the global climate change, it is important to consider new potential interactions or changes that may appear. Heavy rainy periods (one of the consequences of global climate change in eastern-central Argentina) can promote flooding in some estuaries (mainly on coastal lagoons), and thus, affect interactions between species. In this work we investigate if climatic fluctuations can affect Spartina densiflora Brong. (dominant marsh plant) survival through a chain of biotic and abiotic interactions in a SW Atlantic costal lagoon (37° 40′S, 57° 23′W; Mar Chiquita, Argentina). To achieve this, the long-term rainfall behavior of this region, and the effect of rainy periods on submergence of estuarine marsh areas (using satellite images) were analyzed. Then, the effect of flooding on the activity of the dominant herbivore of this system, the burrowing crab Neohelice granulata (= Chasmagnathus granulatus), was studied using pitfall traps. Finally, the effect of flooding on crab herbivory rates and plant survival were analyzed using transplants, stem-marking and flooding experiments. Long-term rainfall behavior showed that mean annual rainfall has increased during the last century, with the occurrence of more rainy years, and increases in cumulative monthly rainfall increased the submerged area of the S. densiflora marsh. Also, crab activity in the marsh largely increased during periods of flooding, associated with more than 100% increments in herbivory rates and stem mortality. These results reveal that increments in rainfall regime can trigger a cascade of abiotic and biotic interactions leading to increased marsh mortality, and stresses the importance of considering both, biotic and abiotic factors, together to predict changes in community organization.  相似文献

Hemisphere scale events such as El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) can alter rainfall regimes worldwide, with important effects on species abundance and distribution. The evidence of ENSO effects on terrestrial communities is, however, restricted to a few ecosystem types. We explored the effects of ENSO episodes on plant/terrestrial-herbivore interactions through changes in the rainfall regime in a southwestern Atlantic salt marsh (Mar Chiquita coastal lagoon, Argentina. 37° 40′S, 57° 23′W). Surveys showed a positive relationship between winter rainfall and the abundance of the wild guinea pig Cavia aperea. The highest salt marsh abundances of C. aperea were associated with rainy periods during El Niño episodes, and the lowest ones were associated with the driest La Niña episodes. Rainfall was negatively associated with marsh sediment salinity, and experiments revealed that increased salinity reduces growth and increases mortality of cordgrass (Spartina densiflora). Salt increase also causes the highest percentage of dry area in S. densiflora leaves and reduced carbon content, and more salt content and secretion in S. densiflora stems. A factorial experiment in which we manipulated C. aperea presence and salinity along the edges of S. densiflora patches showed that plants can asexually invade unvegetated areas when salinity is reduced and C. aperea is excluded. Conversely, S. densiflora edges retracted when salinity was increased or there was C. aperea herbivory. Changes in nutritional quality of S. densiflora could explain the low herbivory of (and lack of impacts from) C. aperea in plots with high salinity. Thus, plant distribution responds directly to climate oscillations through changes in salt stress, and indirectly, through changes in plant-herbivore interactions. Herbivores respond indirectly to climate oscillations through changes in plant food quality, which suggests that top-down effects increase when bottom-up stressors are relaxed. ENSO events have direct and indirect effects on marsh communities that modulate the relative importance of top-down and bottom-up effects and have a considerable effect on the primary productivity of S. densiflora marshes.  相似文献

Salt marshes are ecosystems subjected to a variety of environmental stresses like high salinity, water deficit, intense radiation or high temperatures. Field measurements were conduced in two halophyte species, Atriplex portulacoides L. and Limoniastrum monopetalum L., in the Reserva Natural do Sapal de Castro Marim, to compare their physiological response, i.e., water potential (ψ), net photosynthetic rate (A), stomatal conductance (gs) under natural conditions. Both species demonstrated marked variations in ψ throughout the year, with very low values in the summer, the period of higher salinity, drought and temperature. Deficit water potential (Δψ = ψmidday − ψpredawn) was lower in the summer than in other seasons in A. portulacoides but not in L. monopetalum. The highest values for A and gs in L. monopetalum were observed in autumn and for A. portulacoides in winter, presenting both lowest values in spring and summer. Amax was particularly high for L. monopetalum than for A. portulacoides in summer and autumn, despite gsmax was similar in both species. Diurnal pattern of A and gs were similar in both species, with higher values in the morning, decreasing throughout the day.  相似文献

In many temperate estuaries, mats of opportunistic macroalgae accumulate on intertidal flats and in lower elevations of salt marshes, perhaps playing a role in linking water column nitrogen (N) supply to these benthic habitats. Using a flow-through seawater system and tidal simulator, we varied densities (equivalent to 0, 1, 2, or 3 kg m−2 wet mass) of 15N-labelled macroalgae (Enteromorpha intestinalis) on estuarine sediments in microcosms with/without pickleweed (Salicornia virginica) to assess N transfers from algae. In the 6-week experiment, macroalgal biomass increased from initial levels in the lower density treatments but all algae lost N mass, probably through both leakage and decomposition. With all densities of algae added, sediments and pickleweed became enriched in 15N. With increasing mat density, losses of algal N mass increased, resulting in stepwise increases in 15N labeling of the deeper sediments and pickleweed. While we did not detect a growth response in pickleweed with macroalgal addition during the experiment, N losses from algal mats that persist over many months and/or recur each year could be important to the mineral nutrition of N-limited marsh plants. We conclude that N dynamics of intertidal sediments and lower salt marsh vegetation are linked to the N pools of co-occurring macroalgae and that further study is needed to assess the magnitude and importance of N transfers.  相似文献

Summary Lacunal allocation as the fraction of the total cross sectional area of leaves, stem bases, rhizomes, and roots was determined in both tall and short growth forms of Spartina alterniflora collected from natural monospecific stands. The results indicate that in both growth forms lacunal allocation is greater in stem bases and rhizomes than in leaves and roots and that tall form plants allocate more of their stem and rhizome to lacunae than short form plants.Measurements made in natural stands of Spartina alterniflora suggest that total lacunal area of the stem base increases with increasing stem diameter and that stem diameter increases with increasing plant height and above-ground biomass. However, the fraction of cross section allocated to lacunae was relatively constant and increased only with the formation of a central lacuna.Experimental manipulations of surface and subsurface water exchange were carried out to test the influence of flooding regime on aerenchyma formation. No significant differences in lacunal allocation were detected between plants grown in flooded (reduced) and drained (oxidized) sediments in either laboratory or field experiments. While aerenchyma formation in Spartina alterniflora may be an adaptation to soil waterlogging/anoxia, our results suggest that lacunal formation is maximized as a normal part of development with allocation constrained structurally by the size of plants in highly organic New England and Mid-Atlantic marshes. The cross sectional area of aerenchyma for gas transport was found to be related to the growth of Spartina alterniflora with stands of short form Spartina alterniflora exhibiting a lower specific gas transport capacity (lacunal area per unit below ground biomass) than tall form plants despite having a similar below-ground biomass supported by a 10 fold higher culm density. The increased specific gas transport capacity in tall vs. short plants may provide a new mechanism to explain the better aeration, higher nutrient uptake rates and lower frequency of anaerobic respiration in roots of tall vs. short Spartina alterniflora.  相似文献

Spartina alterniflora has been reported to lose significant amounts of oxygen to its rhizosphere with potentially important effects on salt-marsh biogeochemical cycling and plant productivity. The potential significance of this oxidative pathway was evaluated using laboratory split-chamber experiments to quantify oxygen loss from intact root systems under a wide variety of pre-treatment and incubation conditions including antibiotics to inhibit microbial respiration. The aerenchyma system of S. alterniflora was found to transport O2, N2, Ar, and CH4 from above-ground sources to its below-ground roots and rhizomes. While non-respiratory gases were observed to move from the lacunae to water bathing the root systems, net O2 loss did not occur; instead oxygen present outside of the roots/rhizomes was consumed. Net oxygen loss was found when resistance to gas transport was reduced in the lacunae-rhizosphere pathway by placing the root systems in a gas phase and when plant respiration was significantly reduced. Root system respiration appeared to be the major variable in the plant oxygen balance. When root and rhizome respiration was inhibited using poisons or lowered by cooling, the oxygen deficit was greatly reduced and oxygen loss was indicated. The effect of seasonal temperature changes on root system oxygen deficit presents a possible explanation as to why Spartina produces root systems with respiration rates that cannot be supported by gas transport. Overall, while oxygen loss from individual plant roots is likely, integrating measured root system oxygen loss with geochemical data indicates that the mass amount of oxygen lost from S. alterniflora root systems is small compared to the total oxygen balance of vegetated salt marsh sediments.  相似文献

Seasonal monitoring of metal sulfides was carried out in four soils ofthe Ría de Ortigueira salt marshes. Soils from the high salt marsh (withsuboxic redox conditions at the surface), had low concentrations of ironsulfides (AVS and pyrite fraction) and thus a low degree of trace metalpyritization (DTMP) in surface layers (0–10 cm), butconcentrations of metals associated with the pyrite fraction increasedconsiderably at depth (27.5 cm). In the low salt marsh soils (withanoxic conditions at the surface) maximum concentrations of metal sulfides werefound in the surface layers of soils colonized by Spartina maritima. These results are explained by the double effectexerted by roots in strongly reduced soils. On the one hand, they stimulate theactivity of sulfate-reducing bacteria and on the other, they favour the partialoxidation of the soil, thus generating polysulfides with which Fe2+immediately precipitates as pyrite, whereas in the deepest, permanently anoxiclayers, pyrite must be formed in a reaction in which FeS is an intermediate, asfollows: FeS + H2S FeS2 + H2.Concentrations of metal sulfides also varied greatly with the season, with twopatterns being distinguished. In soils colonized by S. maritima in both high and low salt marshes, the lowestconcentrations were found in summer. At this time of the year there is a netloss of metal sulfides throughout the profile, presumably due to physiologicalactivity of plants (evapotranspiration and release of oxygen from roots). Incontrast, maximum concentrations of AVS and pyritic metals were found in thesummer in the low salt marsh soils not colonized by vascular plants (creekbottom). In this case, the higher temperatures increased the activity ofsulfur-reducing bacteria leading to synthesis and accumulation of metalsulfidesin the soil.  相似文献

Seasonalvariation in leaf nitrogen of mature green and senescent leaves and nitrogenresorption efficiency in three plants (Spartina maritima, Halimioneportulacoides and Arthrocnemum perenne) of aTagus estuary salt marsh are reported. Total nitrogen concentrations in greenand senescent leaves were higher during winter (December and March). Soilinorganic nitrogen availability showed an opposite pattern with higherconcentrations during summer (June and September) when total leaf biomass washigher. Nitrogen resorption efficiency ranged between 31 and 76% andH. portulacoides was the plant that better minimizednitrogen loss by this process. Nitrogen resorption occurred mainly from thesoluble protein pool, although other fractions must have been broken down duringthe resorption process. No significant seasonal variation in nitrogen resorptionefficiency and no relation to leaf total nitrogen or soil nitrogen availabilitywere found. This suggests that the efficiency of the resorption process is notdetermined by the plant nitrogen status nor by the availability of the nutrientin the soil. Nevertheless, resorption from senescing leaves may play animportant role in the nitrogen dynamics of salt marsh plants and reduce thenitrogen requirements for plant growth.  相似文献

Both bacteria and fungi play critical roles in decomposition processes in many natural environments, yet only rarely have they been studied as an integrated community. We examined whether physical associations exist between individual bacterial and fungal species that co-occur on decaying smooth cordgrass, Spartina alterniflora, in a south-eastern US salt marsh. Fungal-pervaded decaying Spartina was used as "bait" for potential bacterial associates. The bundles (infiltrated with one of three dominant fungal members of the decomposer assemblage, or an autoclaved control) were placed in a salt marsh and collected biweekly for 6 weeks during the first experiment (late summer 2002), and weekly for 3 weeks during the second experiment (early summer 2003). Terminal-restriction fragment length polymorphism (T-RFLP) analysis of 16S rRNA genes was used to track colonization by bacterial taxa in association with the established fungal species. T-RFLP analysis of 18S-to-28S internal transcribed spacer (ITS) regions was used to monitor changes in fungal communities once bundles had been placed in the field. Results from both years were nearly identical, and showed that invasion by fungi other than the bait species was slow, resulting in a virtual fungal monoculture for several weeks into the experiments. Surprisingly, bacterial communities were unaffected by the identity of the fungal bait. Regardless of the fungal species, and even in the absence of prior fungal colonization, bacterial 16S rRNA profiles were remarkably similar. These results suggest that few species-specific associations, either positive or negative, exist between bacterial and fungal members of the Spartina decomposer community during initial colonization.

Decomposition of Spartina anglica, Elytrigia pungens and Halimione portulacoides was studied for 20.5 months in situ in two habitats on a salt marsh in The SW Netherlands. Litter bags of three different mesh sizes were used to exclude meio- and/or macrofauna. The middle-marsh habitat was flooded more frequently than the plant-debris habitat in the highest marsh zone. Decomposition of the three species followed an exponential pattern of decay: instantaneous decay rates varied from 0.0026 to 0.0054 per day. Decay rates were significantly influenced by habitat factors and fauna, while there was a significant interaction between plant species and habitat. In case of a significant meio- and/or macrofauna effect, this became noticeable 12–16 weeks after the start of decomposition and resulted in a difference of 5–10% ash-free dry weight remaining after 20.5 months. Nematodes were the dominant microfaunal group in the plant litter. Densities were influenced by habitat conditions but not by resource quality, season and meio- and/or macrofauna. Only initial C/N and C/P ratios were correlated with differences in decomposition rates between the plant species. During the later stages of decomposition N and P concentrations of the plant litter were higher in the plant-debris habitat than in the middle-marsh habitat, probably as a result of fluctuating detritivores densities. The course of the decomposition process differed per plant species and per habitat. The results of this study underline the importance of knowledge of long-term decomposition rates.  相似文献

Previous studies have suggested that belowground competition for nutrients influences plant zonation in salt marshes. In this study, I tested the hypothesis that competition for nitrogen structured a clonal plant community in a nitrogen-limited salt marsh in coastal Mississippi, USA. In contrast to most previous field studies that have investigated mechanisms of competition, I examined clonal growth responses of established genets of a nitrogen-demanding low-intertidal species (Spartina alterniflora) to nitrogen addition and the removal of a nitrogen-conserving high-intertidal species (Juncus roemerianus). Nitrogen addition stimulated clonal invasion of the Juncus zone by Spartina but did not reduce the significant competitive effects of Juncus on Spartina. Simulated Juncus shade did not reduce invasion of the Juncus zone by Spartina, indicating that belowground competition reduced clonal invasion. In the last year of the study, the border shifted unexpectedly towards the Spartina zone, resulting in competitive displacement of Spartina by Juncus. Nitrogen addition did not prevent or slow this displacement, further contradicting the nitrogen competition hypothesis. Although growth rates were much more strongly limited by nitrogen in Spartina than in Juncus, nitrogen addition did not cause the displacement of Juncus by Spartina after three growing seasons. I conclude that zonation of Spartina and Juncus is maintained by preemption of space and greater tolerance of low nitrogen supplies by Juncus in the high marsh. These results contrast sharply with findings of reduced belowground competition with nutrient addition in previous studies and highlight the important role of nutrient-mediated competition for space between clonal plants.  相似文献

The role of salt marshes as nitrogen sink is examined taking into consideration the seasonal variation of above and belowground biomass of Spartina martima and Halimione portulacoides in two marshes from Tagus estuary, Pancas and Corroios, and the degradation rates of belowground litter. Total nitrogen was determined in plant components, decomposing litter and sediment. Biomass was higher in Corroios, the saltier marsh, with 7190 g m−2 y−1 dw of S. maritima and 6593 g m−2 y−1 dw of H. portulacoides and the belowground component contributed to 96% and 90% of total biomass, respectively. In the other marsh, Pancas, belowground biomass contributed to 56% and 76% of total biomass for S. maritima and H. portulacoides, respectively. Litterbag experiment showed that between 25% and 50% of nitrogen is lost within the first month and remained relatively constant in the next four months. Slower decomposition is observed in sediments with higher nitrogen concentration (max. 0.7% N in the saltier marsh). Higher concentrations of N were found in the sediment upper layers. Considering the sediment-root system, most of the nitrogen is stored in the sediment compartment and only about 1–4% of the total N was found in the roots. Considering these results, Tagus salt marshes act as a sink for nitrogen.  相似文献

Coastal marshes represent an important transitional zone between uplands and estuaries. One important function of marshes is to assimilate nutrient inputs from uplands, thus providing a buffer for anthropogenic nutrient loads. We examined the effects of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) fertilization on biogeochemical and microbial processes during the summer growing season in a Spartina patens (Aiton (Muhl.)) marsh in the Narragansett Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve on Prudence Island (RI). Quadruplicate 1 m2 plots were fertilized with N and P additions, N-only, P-only, or no additions. N-only addition significantly stimulated bacterial production and increased pore water NH4+ and NO3 concentrations. Denitrification rates ranged from 0 to 8 mmol m−2 day−1. Fertilization had no apparent effect on soil oxygen consumption or denitrification measured in the summer in intact cores due to high core-to-core variation. P fertilization led to increased pore water dissolved inorganic phosphorus (DIP) concentrations and increased DIP release from soils. In contrast the control and N-only treatments had significant DIP uptake across the soil-water interface. The results suggest that in the summer fertilization has no apparent effect on denitrification rates, stimulates bacterial productivity, enhances pore water nutrient concentrations and alters some nutrient fluxes across the marsh surface.  相似文献

The aboveground production of Spartina alterniflora in a salt marsh in Barataria Bay, Louisiana, USA was estimated using five different harvest methods: peak standing crop (PSC), Milner-Hughes, Smalley, Wiegert-Evans, and Lomnicki et al., and a non-destructive method based on measurement of stem density and longevity. Annual production estimates were 831 ± 41, 831 ± 62, 1231 ± 252, 1873 ± 147 and 1437 ± 96 g dry wt m–2 for each method, respectively. The average longevity of individually tagged young shoots was 5.2 ± 0.2 months, equivalent to an annual turnover rate of 2.3 crops per year. Among the five methods, Wiegert-Evans and Lomnicki et al. were considered more accurate than the other three because they corrected for mortality losses between sampling times. The Lomnicki et al. method was preferred over the Wiegert-Evans method because of its greater simplicity.  相似文献

Abstract Specifically radiolabeled [14C-lignin] lignocellulose and uniformly [U-14C] lignocellulose from the salt marsh grass Spartina alterniflora were incubated with the ascomycete Phaesphaeria s spartinicola . This fungus is the predominant one found on decaying standing dead S. alterniflora leaves in the salt marsh ecosystem. After 45 days of incubation at 20°C, 3.3% of the lignin moiety was mineralized to 14CO2 and 2.7% solubilized to DO14C. Mineralization of the polysaccharides was seven times faster than that of the lignin. About 22% of the radioactivity was evolved as 14CO2 but merely 4% was solubilized to DO14C within the incubation time. Experiments monitoring the ergosterol content of the mycelium incubated with S. alterniflora plant material were done to elucidate the carbon conversion efficiency of the fungus as well as the influence of the cinnamyl phenols p -coumaric and ferulic acid on lignocellulose degration. After 21 days of incubation, P. spartinicola showed a growth yield of 0.45 and 0.38 with and without the additional cinnamyl phenols, respectively. Grown on unextracted S. alterniflora the fungus caused a loss of organic plant material of about 50% with a corresponding growth yield of 0.38 during the incubation period. Investigation of cupric oxide oxidation products of sound and degraded lignocellulose revealed a preferential utilization of the syrinyl and cinnamly phenols compared with vanilly phenols.  相似文献

Decomposition of emergent macrophytes in a Wisconsin marsh   总被引:3,自引:3,他引:3
Loss of both dry weight and nutrients during decomposition was measured using litter bags, both in a natural marsh and in controlled experiments. At 348 days dry weight remains of Typha latifolia, Sparganium eurycarpum, Scirpus fluviatilis shoot litter in the marsh were 47.5, 26.9, 51.4% respectively, and for the rootrhizome litter were 59.1, 42.1, 27.8% (Scirpus > Sparganium > Typha). Under controlled conditions both temperature and type of water produced significant effect on dry weight loss of Typha leaves. Sterilization and antibiotics effectively inhibited the growth and activities of decomposers. Initial weight, N, P, Ca, and Mg losses resulted chiefly from leaching. These elements accumulated in spring and summer; N exhibited the highest accumulation. In the laboratory, N accumulation occurred within 15 days, as a result of microorganisms inhabiting the litter. Increase in P, Ca, Mg in later stages of decomposition were attributed to microorganisms, epiphytes, and precipitation from solution. High C : N ratios and relatively low P, Ca, Mg in original standing crop may be the cause of low herbivore consumption, whereas the relative increases in N, P, Ca, Mg in decomposed litter provide a more nutrient-rich substrate for detritivores. Much of the nutrient uptake in the annual cycle is via microbial and detritivore growth rather than by macrophyte producers.  相似文献

Decomposition dynamics of aerial parts and root-rhizomes of Spartina maritima in a Basque Country salt marsh was studied, using litter bags placed on the soil surface and buried 10 cm below ground. Aerial parts of the plant in aboveground position showed higher breakdown rates than samples placed belowground. There was no significant difference found between aerial parts and root-rhizomes buried. Nitrogen and phosphorus followed different dynamics (seasonal changes and progressive losses) that may be a consequence of distinctive mineralization pathways. The low faunal richness and densities belowground reflect the unfavourable life conditions in such a situation and, to a certain extent, the lower decomposition rates of buried litter. Four mathematical expressions that fit the data are presented and discussed.  相似文献

Chemical associations of Zn, Pb, Cu, Co and Cd were determined using a sequential extraction procedure in sediments colonised by S. maritima in three salt marshes within the Tagus estuary: Rosário, Corroios and Pancas. Concentrations of these metals were also analysed in above- and belowground parts of Spartina maritima, as well as in sediments colonised by the plant. The highest metal concentrations in sediments were found in the marshes near the industrial and urban areas, whereas metal concentrations in plants were not significantly different among sites. This was thought to be a consequence of differences observed in metal bioavailability: Metals in Pancas, the least polluted location, were largely associated to easily accessible fractions for plant uptake, probably as a result of low organic matter content and high sandy fraction in sediments. S. maritima was able to induce the concentration of metals between its roots in the three salt marshes. The results obtained in this study indicate that S. maritima could be useful to induce phytostabilisation of metals in sediments, although the effectiveness to modify chemical associations is highly dependent on existing sediment parameters, and thus different results could be obtained depending on site characteristics.
