Olivancillaria carcellesi occurs in shallow sandy shores from north Patagonia, in intertidal and subtidal sandy bottoms. Females of O. carcellesi exhibited a remarkable specificity for spawning on the shells of living males and females, indiscriminately, of the buccinanopsid Buccinastrum deforme, measuring 26.9 ± 4.7 mm in shell length. The egg capsule was semispherical and attached to B. deforme shells by a small elliptical and wide base. The capsule was translucid when spawned, with a thick and semirigid wall and a hatching aperture of 1.8 ± 0.1 mm (n = 111) in diameter. Each egg capsule contained a single egg that measured 1367 ± 34 μm (n = 5) in diameter before cleavage. The embryo developed a small bilobed velum and an operculum, which were both lost before hatching as a crawling juvenile of 1762 ± 47 μm (n = 28) in shell length. As in other species in the genus, the eggs of O. carcellesi are among the largest in the caenogastropods with direct development. The time from oviposition to hatching is estimated to be approximately 6 months.  相似文献

Glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) have numerous applications in the fields of pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, nutraceuticals, and foods. GAGs are also critically important in the developmental biology of all multicellular animals. GAGs were isolated from chicken egg components including yolk, thick egg white, thin egg white, membrane, calcified shell matrix supernatant, and shell matrix deposit. Disaccharide compositional analysis was performed using ultra high-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry. The results of these analyses showed that all four families of GAGs were detected in all egg components. Keratan sulfate was found in egg whites (thick and thin) and shell matrix (calcified shell matrix supernatant and deposit) with high level. Chondroitin sulfates were much more plentiful in both shell matrix components and membrane. Hyaluronan was plentiful in both shell matrix components and membrane, but was only present in a trace of quantities in the yolk. Heparan sulfate was plentiful in the shell matrix deposit but was present in a trace of quantities in the egg content components (yolk, thick and thin egg whites). Most of the chondroitin and heparan sulfate disaccharides were present in the GAGs found in chicken eggs with the exception of chondroitin and heparan sulfate 2,6-disulfated disaccharides. Both CS and HS in the shell matrix deposit contained the most diverse chondroitin and heparan sulfate disaccharide compositions. Eggs might provide a potential new source of GAGs.  相似文献

The periodicity of increment formation in the shell of the Manila clam Ruditapes philippinarum was investigated in the subtidal zone of the Auray River estuary (South Brittany, France). Calcein markings were performed at different periods between May and October 2007 using in situ benthic chambers tented by scuba divers. This study shows that shell microgrowth increments were well-defined and deposited with a tidal periodicity in the subtidal zone, providing the calendar base for high-resolution ecological studies and environmental reconstruction from these R. philippinarum shells. Endogenous rhythmicity in shell microgrowth increment formation and oxygen consumption was previously documented in this species from intertidal flats. Our study suggests that, in the subtidal zone, Manila clams' rhythmic activity may be controlled by such an endogenous process, synchronized by tidal cues. As in other bivalves, R. philippinarum is an osmoconformer euryhaline bivalve. The tidal rhythmicity of shell microgrowth increments in subtidal specimens of this species could be explained by a behavioral adaptation of valve closure at low tide to protect the clam from low salinities and/or to synchronize with food availability. Finally, large inter-individual variability in tidally associated growth rates and asynchronous growth breaks were observed, and could be due to genetic variability between individuals, asynchronous partial spawning events or predation.  相似文献

The spawning and subsequent copulating behavior of the elkhorn sculpin (Alcichthys alcicornis) were observed in an aquarium. Soon after the female was introduced into the tank, the male approached and initiated courtship behavior by unfolding all fins. Females which carried ovulated eggs eventually accepted the male and spawning progressed. Females which had not ovulated, repeatedly rejected the male’s advances. The onset of spawning in the female was indicated by fluttering of the pectoral fins and successive horizontal undulations of the posterior trunk which served to sweep the spawning site. The laying of several thousand eggs was preceded by the female taking several large inhalations of water through the mouth and a slight raising of the posterior trunk. The male continued various behavior related to courtship while the female approached spawning. After spawning, the female smoothed the egg mass into a thin layer by using the posterior trunk and anal fin. After spawning, and while the female flattened the egg mass, the male copulated repeatedly. No copulation was observed prior to spawning. Semen was observed to be emitted from the tip of the penis and to leak from the female’s genital pore. Eggs were fertilized externally by the emitted sperm in the case of females which had no prior copulating experience in the present breeding season. The entire reproductive behavior of the pair ceased, as the female left the spawning site after flattening the egg mass. The male remained near by, but did not aerate the eggs. During the breeding season, the area around the female’s genital pore and along both sides near the base of the anal fin became slightly distended and soft by the accumulation of a serous fluid. It is presumed that this edematous modification serves to flatten the egg mass for softness without crushing the eggs.  相似文献

Sargassum muticum (Yendo) Fensholt is an invasive species that is firmly established on intertidal and subtidal rocky shores of Europe and the Pacific coast of North America. Local success and spread of S. muticum is thought to rely on its reproductive potential that seems dependent on exogenous factors like tidal and lunar cycles. This study is the first to compare the reproductive patterns (periodicity of egg expulsion and embryo settlement) of this invader in two different habitats: the middle and low intertidal. The combination of monthly, daily, and tidal samples at triplicate sites within each habitat showed a semilunar periodicity of egg expulsion and embryo settlement coincident with increasing tidal amplitude just before full and new moons. In both habitats, duration of each egg expulsion event was ~1 week, and embryo settlement occurred during the first daily low tide and with the incoming high tide during spring tides. However, both expulsion and settlement started 1–2 d earlier, expulsion saturation was faster, and settlement was higher in the mid‐ compared to the low intertidal. Our results suggest that the exact timing of gamete expulsion and embryo release of S. muticum responds to local factors, including tidal cues, which result in differences between mid‐ and low‐intertidal habitats.  相似文献

From April 1994 to April 1996, we carried out monthly surveys on the physical and chemical variability of ebbing water at two intertidal stations near the emerged tidal flat and surface water at a nearby subtidal station, in a tidal estuary of the Seto Inland Sea, Japan. The fresh water runoff was a major source of new nitrogen (nitrate+nitrite = –2.1 × salinity + 74.3, r 2 = 0.76, p < 0.001, at the inner intertidal station). In contrast, the absence or weak correlation of ammonium, phosphate and silicate with salinity in ebbing water highlighted the importance of in situ biologically-mediated processes, including the excretory activity of intertidal dominant bivalves (Ruditapes philippinarum and Musculista senhousia) and primary producer nutrient uptake. Among suspended particulate matter (SPM), the negative correlation of Chl a with salinity (p< 0.001) suggested that an upper intertidal zone, where high microphytobenthic assemblages occur, may represent a considerable source of microalgal biomass. Whereas, a stronger correlation of POC with pheo-pigments (r 2 0.92) than with Chl a (r 2 0.44), a low fraction of living phyto-Carbon (ca. 5%) and a high pheo-pigment/Chl a ratio (ca. 3) indicated a high portion of refractory algal material and a close water–sediment coupling on the flat, in which abundant macrozoobenthos is likely to play an important role. In spite of the strong variability of this ecosystems, this study also demonstrated that highly significant seasonal patterns can be recognized in our study area. However, patterns varied depending on the different nutrient species, SPM and sites. In ebbing water, ammonium concentrations were significantly higher in the cold period (i.e. November–April: water temperature 10.0 ± 4.4 °C), when primary producer biomass decreases, while Chl a and pheo-pigment content were 4.3 and 4.8 higher in the warm period (May–October: water temperature 23.5 ± 4.2 °C), respectively. At the subtidal site, nutrients were 1.9 (silicate)–2.9 (phosphate) and SPM was 1.8 (POC)–2.1 (pheo-pigments) times higher in the warm period. On an annual basis, mean pheo-pigment and POC content was 12–25 times and 4–8 times higher on the intertidal zone than on the subtidal zone, respectively, while nutrient concentrations were within the same order of magnitude. Such a qualitative difference (i.e. nutrients vs. SPM) between sites suggests that particle deposition and/or removal is likely to occur along the estuary, resulting in a limited SPM content at the surface layer of the subtidal site, while nutrients are more directly transported into the surface layer of the subtidal zone by lower salinity water mass intrusion from the intertidal zone, most importantly during the warm period.  相似文献

This study examined the effects of colony size and polyp position on six variables of polyp fecundity [egg number, egg size, total egg volume, total testis volume, total gonad volume, and gonad ratio (egg volume/testis volume)] in three tabular Acropora corals (Scleractinia), A. hyacinthus, A. japonica, and A. solitaryensis. Samples were collected from various colony sizes (n = 21–30 colonies species?1), just before the predicted spawning at Kochi, Japan, in 2009. Five replicate polyps were sampled at three positions (center, middle, and outer) from the center to the marginal area in each tabular colony. Results indicated effects of colony size and polyp position on both male and female gonads polyp?1. A positive effect of colony size was observed on variables of female gonads polyp?1 (egg number, total egg volume) in A. hyacinthus only, while the positive effect on the variable of male gonads polyp?1 (total testis volume) was common in all Acropora species, with total testis volume polyp?1 increasing 2–4-fold from the small (200–400 cm2) to the large size class (5,000–9,000 cm2). Among the polyp positions, lower values were observed mostly in center polyps in A. hyacinthus, while lower values were observed only in outer polyps in the other Acropora species. The distinct patterns between A. hyacinthus and the other two Acropora species suggest different reproductive strategies at the species level. Further studies are needed to confirm the prevalence of these effects in scleractinian corals, which will broaden our understanding of reproductive life history strategies and improve the estimation of reproductive performance.  相似文献

Results of experiments are reported on the effects of water temperature and immersion time in winter on egg size and egg numbers in three intertidally living bivalves in the Dutch Wadden Sea, the Baltic tellin Macoma balthica, the common cockle Cerastoderma edule and the common mussel Mytilus edulis. Macoma (14–17 mm shell length) produced large eggs (diameter of 107 μm) in relatively small numbers (20 000–70 000) in early spring. Later in spring, Cerastoderma (28–33 mm shell length) produced smaller eggs (77 μm, excluding the surrounding jelly layer) in tenfold larger numbers (200 000–700 000). Mytilus (45–55 mm shell length) spawned even smaller eggs (72 μm) in high (but not easily assessed) numbers over a more extended period. In Macoma egg size was not affected by winter temperatures or immersion time. Effects of winter–spring temperatures and immersion time on egg size could be demonstrated in Cerastoderma. Smaller eggs were produced at the higher temperatures. Effects of immersion time were non-consistent: at lower water temperatures larger, but at higher temperatures smaller eggs were produced by animals kept at longer immersion times. In Mytilus, no temperature effects were observed. However, a longer immersion time resulted in larger eggs. In Macoma as well as in Cerastoderma significantly more eggs were produced at the lower temperature. Immersion time effects were most pronounced at the lower temperature, where more eggs were produced at the subtidal level than at the tidal level. At the higher water temperature differences between egg numbers produced at the two tidal levels were small. Just prior to spawning, egg numbers were strongly positively related to body mass at a certain shell length.  相似文献

In 1997 and 1998, surveys were performed to compare species composition, abundance and diversity of non-attached epifauna (>1 mm) in low intertidal and adjacent shallow subtidal zones of three mussel beds (Mytilus edulis L.) near the island of Sylt in the North Sea. The community structure was similar when compared within tidal zones: no significant differences in species numbers and abundances were recorded between locations and between years. A comparison between tidal zones, however, revealed higher diversity, species densities and total species numbers in the subtidal (per 1,000 cm2: H =2.0±0.16; 12 ±1 species density; 22 species) than the intertidal zone (per 1,000 cm2: H =0.7±0.27; 6±2 species density; 19 species). Abundances significantly dropped with increasing submergence from 2,052 (±468) m–2 to 1,184 (±475) m–2. This was mainly due to significantly higher densities of both juvenile periwinkles, Littorina littorea, and crabs, Carcinus maenas, in intertidal mussel beds. However, many less dominant species were significantly more abundant in subtidal mussel beds. This study revealed that in the non-attached epifaunal community of mussel beds the tidal level effect within metres was strong, whilst the spatial variability in a much wider (kilometre) range but the same tidal level was negligible. The high epifaunal diversity in the subtidal zone suggests that the protective measures for mussel beds against the effects of mussel fishery should be extended from the intertidal to the subtidal zone, if the integrity of the mussel bed community in the Wadden Sea National Park is to be maintained. Carbohydrate intake increases longevity, body weight maintenance and egg production in female Euphydryas editha. Amino acid intake leads to heavier eggs, larvae from which are more likely to survive. Females fed nectar produce more eggs in later masses than females which are not fed. During years of normal and below normal precipitation, larvae emerging from these later eggs are unlikely to reach obligatory size for diapause before their food dries up. On Jasper Ridge, where mortality is density-independent, nectar plays an important role increasing production of late egg masses during years of greater than normal rainfall when larvae from these masses are likely to reach diapause. The resulting large population increases, though infrequent, are probably important in maintaining population sizes large enough to reduce the chances of extinction during dry years.  相似文献

Mature females of the copepodTemora longicornis from the Marsdiep tidal inlet were incubated at ambient water temperature during the winter of 1989/1990 to estimate their egg production during 24 hours. Throughout winter this production remained at a level of 0 to 10 eggs per female. In March a steep rise to 60 to 80 eggs coincided with an equally steep rise in chlorophyll-a from 4 to 20 g.l–1. Excess food given during incubation tended to increase the observed production rate only in October at relatively high temperature. Additive effects of rising food level and temperature on daily egg production were found in spring. In March and April 1988 and 1990 the observed maximum daily egg production per female increased from about 20 at 5°C and 5 g.l–1 chlorophyll to 70 at almost 10°C and 20 g.l–1. The egg production in winter gives a prebloom potential to maintain a stock of premature stages ready to utilize the algal spring bloom. Early spawning before April can also contribute to the development of the abundance peak of adults in May–June. Due to growth rates increasing with temperature in the months March and April, most of the adults at their peak density may have hatched from eggs before the period of maximum egg production rate at the end of April. The exceptionally high production rate observed at the end of March may be related to a developingPhaeocystis bloom.  相似文献

The microphytobenthic standing crop in marine coastal sediments from Kerguelen main island (from surface to 8 cm deep) varied in relation to the tidal position, grain size, and shelter of sediments. A time-series analysis was performed at three distinct sites: a sheltered fjord (PRAY), a moderately exposed embayment (PAF) and a deep fjord with higher open-ocean influence (PN). Temporal variations on all studied parameters were observed on intertidal, as well as on subtidal sediments, but with a great range in variations and pattern. Compared to phytoplankton blooms at the same location and stations, the microphytobenthos productive periods were not so marked, especially on intertidal sediments. Nevertheless, high productivity periods were in most cases linked to austral spring and summer (up to 30–50 g Chl a g–1 dw, in intertidal sheltered sands; >170 g Chl a g–1 dw, in sheltered subtidal muds). On subtidal muddy sites, the high phaeopigments concentrations (up to 195 g Phaeo a g–1 dw at PRAY site) were attributed to kelp and epiphyte degradation and sedimentation, and also to macrofauna trophic influence, whereas at Portes-Noires fjord (PN) a Phaeophytine a late spring increase in 1991 was suspected to be of plankton origin. The PN site exhibited a lower productivity than at the other two sites, regardless of the tidal position of the sediment, due to a delayed annual cycle in surficial temperature and standing crop. Compared to the phytoplankton blooms, the microphytobenthos productivity at Kerguelen main island was less restricted in time and may occur throughout the year, not just to the benefit of the benthos food-chain, but also to the pelagic one via resuspension, as well as to filter feeders (i.e. mussels).  相似文献

The spawning biomass of Australian anchovy Engraulis australis in gulf and shelf waters of South Australia was compared using the daily egg production method (DEPM). The total survey area was 128 700 km2 with recorded spawning areas in gulf and shelf waters of 4898 and 44 618 km2, respectively. High egg densities in the warm, shallow gulf waters were produced by small, young (<1 year old) E. australis that spawned relatively small batches of eggs (c. 855) approximately every 3 days. In cooler, deeper shelf waters, where larger, older E. australis are found, lower egg densities occurred despite individuals producing much larger batches of eggs (c. 15 572) approximately every 7 days. In shelf waters, the highest densities were recorded at inshore sampling stations. Spawning appeared to peak between 0000 and 0100 hours. Females were more abundant than males in samples from both gulf and shelf waters with sex ratios of 0·61 and 0·56, respectively. The spawning biomass of E. australis in shelf waters was 101 522 t, whereas the estimate for gulf waters was 25 374 t. Due to the differences in mean size of the spawning females, however, c. 6 × 109E. australis were present in each region. The results support the hypothesis that variability in habitat conditions may directly influence E. australis reproduction. A large reserve of young fish in the relatively stable gulf environment may increase the resilience of the E. australis population in South Australia to unfavourable interannual changes in offshore environmental conditions.  相似文献

The study of the biology of the mud shrimp Upogebia issaeffi (Balss, 1913) from the subtidal zone of the Vostok Bay (Peter the Great Bay, Sea of Japan) revealed that this species occurs at depth of 1–6 m on mixed grounds of boulders, gravel, pebbles, shells of dead clams, and silty sand. The average population density of U. issaeffi in the local aggregation on a bottom transect of 300 m length ranged from 0.2 ± 0.4 to 8.0 ± 3.0 ind./m2, the biomass varied from 0.5 ± 1.1 to 78.7 ± 28.3 g/m2, or about 2.7% of the total biomass of macrozoobenthos and 51.2% of the biomass of decapod crustaceans, which is characteristic of the habitats of the mud shrimp. The maximum depth of burrowing of U. issaeffi was 65 cm. The aggregation consisted of animals with body lengths of 44–88 mm. The lifespan of U. issaeffi was 2–3 years. An equilibrium ratio of males and females (1: 1.06) was observed in the population. There were egg clutches on pleopods of 81.7% of the females. The body size of the smallest females with eggs was 67 mm. The larger the females were, the more of them were ovigerous individuals. About 4% of individuals of U. issaeffi were infected with the parasitic isopod Orthione griffenis.  相似文献

Polyclonal antibody developed from egg proteins of the Pacific oysters, Crassostrea gigas, was used in quantification of the eggs. Quantity of the egg protein was measured using ELISA and a weight-normalized gonadosomatic index (GSI) was then established. Histology indicated that the oysters collected from Goseong Bay, Korea, in 2000 initiated gametogenesis as early as late February and spawned mostly in late June to early July when water temperature reached 23–25 °C. A second spawning peak was also observed in late August and the spawning activity continued to late October. Oyster egg proteins could be detected by ELISA in all months except March and November; a few oysters collected during December and January contained a measurable amount of eggs. The highest monthly mean GSI, 0.423, was observed in mid-June when the oysters were ready to spawn. The maximum GSI recorded in this study was 0.667. A positive correlation was found between oyster size and fecundity; the number of eggs increased as oyster biomass increased (r2=0.7497). Our data suggest that oysters in Goseong Bay produce 3–196 million eggs during the spawning season. The immunological method developed in this study was sensitive enough to measure a small quantity of eggs and considered to be method of choice for studying bivalve reproduction.  相似文献

Patasson lameerei Debauche is the most important of three egg parasitoids found onSitona spp. attacking lucerne and annual medics in the North-Western Mediterranean. The mymarids were lacking in eggs extracted from the soil in Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia. The biology and the behaviour of the egg parasitoid are described. In Central Europe, adults ofP. lameerei are recorded from May to September, but in the Montpellier region (Southern France), this species aestivates in the larval stage within the eggs of its hosts during the same period.  相似文献

Synopsis Spawning of 32 species of Labridae and 13 species of Scaridae was seen at Enewetak Atoll, Marshall Islands. Most spawned on a reef bisecting the main ocean-lagoon passage which had strong tidal currents. Others spawned on lagoon reefs and in Halimeda beds. Polygynous haremic, lek-like and promiscuous mating systems were found which were species specific. Data on reproductive patterns, sexual dichromatism, sexual dimorphism, seasonality and spawning behavior were determined. Many spawned during the day in a time-phase dependent pattern from near sunrise to sunset. Scarid spawning began at slack high water or after when currents were starting to move out of the lagoon. Labrid spawning usually started about 30 min later with some continuing up to 2 h after high tide. With high tide before sunrise, scarid spawning began 30–50 min after sunrise as the current started flowing over the reef. With high tide near sunset, spawning occurred with an incoming current. Most labroids spawned on all phases of the moon. Acanthuridae (6 spp), Caesionidae (1 sp.) and Zanclidae (1 sp.) spawned after high tide at the same time as labroids. Pomacanthidae (5 spp.) spawned only shortly before sunset without reference to tidal currents. Fishes producing pelagic eggs at the lagoon-ocean channel spawned (1) at or slightly after high tide (44spp.), (2) in late afternoon without reference to tide (6 spp.) or (3) after slack low water (1 sp. ). Spawning style can vary within a single species in different environments. Despite the presence of many piscivores, no successful predation on spawning adults was seen. Predation on newly released eggs was uncommon. Labrichthys unilineata and Anampses twistii attempted to defend their eggs for a few sec after release. Attacks by piscivores on spawning adults on tropical reefs occur once per 100–1000 spawnings. Most are wary when preparing to spawn and prespawning behavior is easily interrupted. The risk from piscivores goes down and spawning ascent speed decreases with increasing size of spawners. Egg predation by zooplanktivores is less for pair spawners than group spawners possibly due to less conspicuous gamete clouds and times of spawning. Increasing height of egg release, speed and length of the spawning ascent, and trajectory alteration of ascending adults are believed to make it more difficult for zooplanktivores to locate eggs after release. For labrids, permanent full sexual dichromatism was found among haremic, lek-like and promiscuous mating systems. Species with temporary full dichromatism, permanent and temporary partial dichromatism and monochromatism were haremic. Smaller scarids were believed to have lek-like, and larger species haremic, mating systems. Smaller scarids had male looping behavior and post spawning displays, plus faster spawning ascents and different locations for egg release than larger ones. Eggs of 21 labrids were spherical or nearly spherical, ranging from 0.55–0.80 mm in diameter, and most had one oil globule. Among 7 is scarids, 6 had spindle-shaped eggs ranging from 1.25 ×0.50 mm 2.14× 0.48 mm while one had a nearly spherical egg. One scarid egg lacked an oil globule.  相似文献

The subtidal rocky reefs are home to a diverse range of marine animals, including small cryptic fishes, characterised by a bipartite life cycle, with benthic adults and pelagic larval stage that lasts from several days to several months. Using the otolith microstructure analysis, this study determines the hatching and larval growth patterns of the abundant triplefin Helcogrammoides chilensis (Pisces: Tripterygiidae). Fish larvae were collected during September–October 2010 and between July 2012 and April 2013 in nearshore waters (<500 m) of central Chile. Nearshore time series of ichthyoplankton samples showed that large abundance of this species occurs during early austral spring and autumn seasons. Body lengths ranged from 3.11 to 16.57 mm (1–57 days old). Sagittal microincrement analyses estimate that during the main reproductive season, larval growth rates are slow, varying between 0.145 and 0.156 mm day?1 at a weekly scale. Back-calculated hatch days and circular statistics indicate a major hatch pulse occurring near full moon of the lunar cycle. These results suggest that reproduction occurs coupled with the upwelling season, which reduces the probability of starvation, and hatching occurs during spring tides (full moon), which increases larval dispersion and population connectivity.  相似文献

On sedimentary tidal flats near the island of Sylt (German Bight, North Sea) abundance and size distribution of periwinkles, Littorina littorea L., were studied in low intertidal and in shallow and deep subtidal mussel beds (Mytilus edulis L.). In low intertidal mussel beds, surveys revealed that high densities (1,369±571 m–2) of juvenile snails (≤13 mm) were positively correlated with strong barnacle epigrowth (Semibalanus balanoides L. and Balanus crenatus Bruguière) on mussels. A subsequent field experiment showed that recruitment of L. littorea was restricted to the intertidal zone. Abundances of periwinkles (213±114 m–2) and barnacles abruptly decreased in the adjacent shallow subtidal zone, which served as a habitat for older snails (>13 mm). L. littorea was completely absent from disjunct deep (5 m) subtidal mussel beds. Snail abundance varied seasonally with maxima of >4,000 m–2 in low intertidal mussel beds in October and minima in July, just before the onset of new recruitment. I suggest that the presence of cracks and crevices among the dense barnacle overgrowth in intertidal mussel beds favoured recruitment and survival of juvenile snails. Larger (older) specimens are assumed to actively migrate to the less favourable adjacent subtidal. The average biomass ofHalimeda per m2 of solid substratum increased progressively on a series of reefs situated at increasing distances from the shore in the central Great Barrier Reef. There was none on a reef close inshore, increasing to nearly 500 g m?2 total biomass (?90% calcium carbonate) on an oceanic atoll system in the Coral Sea. The biomass measured contained 13 species ofHalimeda but was dominated by only two species,H. copiosa andH. opuntia, except on the atoll whereH. minima was dominant. Three sand-dwelling species were also present but did not occur anywhere in substantial quantities. Growth rates of the dominant species were measured bv tagging individual branch tips. A mean value of 0.16 segments d?1 was recorded but 41% of the branch tips did not grow any new segments whilst only 1% grew more than one per day. The number of branch tips per unit biomass was very constant and has been used in conjunction with growth rates and biomass to calculate productivity rates, and thence sedimentation, in the lagoon of one of the reefs. Biomass doubling time of 15 d and production of 6.9 g dry wt m?2 d?1 are considerably higher than previously reported values forHalimeda vegetation and there was little seasonal change detected over a whole year. Those values indicate annual accretion of 184.9 g m?2 year?1 ofHalimeda segment debris over the entire lagoon floor (5.9 km2) of Davies Reef, equivalent to 0.13 mm year?1 due toHalimeda alone, or 1 m every 1,892 years when other contributions to that sediment are taken into account.  相似文献
