Data obtained from a small (150 ha) experimental catchment, Hereford U.K., have shown that land drains contributed >50% of the total catchment suspended sediment (SS) yield over a two year period. In one of the monitored drains, annual sediment yields were 964 and 978 kg ha–1. Particulate phosphorus (PP) contributed >60% of total phosphorus lost through the drains and at least 73% of the total drain load came from topsoil. A major question that was not answered by the monitoring programme was whether SS and PP loads had increased since the drains had been installed between the 1960s and 1980s. To address this problem, a sediment yield record was reconstructed from the Kyre Pool catchment in Worcestershire that has a similar drainage history and soil types. Reservoir sediments were dated using the 210Pb crs method and results suggest a fourfold increase in SS yield (300–1170 kg ha–1 yr–1) and PP loads (0.19–0.79 kg ha–1 yr–1) since the 1960s. The most recent SS and PP loads are comparable to those obtained from catchment monitoring. The high lake sediment 137Cs inventory suggests a significant influx of eroded topsoil and 137Cs activities in the most recent lake sediments are comparable to those of monitored land drains, supporting the hypothesis that land drainage has had a major impact on SS and PP yields and pathways.  相似文献

The main river supplying Lake Naivasha, Kenya, the Malewa, drains a catchment given over to largely subsistence cultivation and animal husbandry. The lake itself is the focus for an intensive horticultural industry based upon irrigation from the lake. The Malewa, however, is relatively independent of the impact of industry, and so its contribution to eutrophication of the lake was evaluated. Two periods of study, a very wet-dry and a `normal' wet-dry season showed that the river contribution of phosphorus led to a total phosphorus loading of 1.4 g m–2 lake surface ann–1 in the very wet period compared to 0.2 in the `normal'. Chlorophyll `a' in the open water of the lake was significantly related to soluble reactive phosphorus. The lake is now eutrophic by normal limnological criteria.  相似文献

In many Swedish lakes, the fallout of 137Cs from the Chernobyl accident in April 1986 has largely accumulated in the sediments. The availability and transfer of deposited 137Cs to biota is influenced by factors such as resuspension. The frequency of resuspension and the 137Cs-content of different fish species was studied in three shallow lakes in Uppland, central Sweden, and in one deeper lake in northern Sweden. Resuspension was measured by the use of sediment traps. Sedimentation rates measured from the traps in the shallower lakes were 5–10 times higher than normal for this type of lake, indicating that resuspension was an important factor. The decrease of the 137Cs-content in muscle tissue of pike, perch and roach was slow in each of the shallow lakes. 137Cs decreased by about 30% over a period of 2 years in the shallowest lake (maximum depth 4 m), whereas 137Cs decreased by 50% in the deeper lakes (maximum depth 10 m). The slower rates of decline of 137Cs in biota from the shallow lakes, are probably a function of sediment dynamics (mainly influenced by lake morphometry, wind direction and strength). They may be influenced, also, by bioavailability of resuspended sediment material. In the deepest northern lake, much of the 137Cs-containing material collected in the sediment traps originated from the catchment area. Resuspension was minimal, and the high activity of 137Cs in the sediment had no effect on content or decline of 137Cs in lake fish.  相似文献

Dayat-er-Roumi is a small lake (73 ha) located in the sub-humid region of NE Morocco. Lake sediment and catchment soils are examined to identify areas of sediment supply to the lake. Magnetic measurements and clay mineralogy are used to show that recent lake sediment is derived predominantly from eroded topsoil. 210Pb dating of one sediment core provided a chronology for the calculation of sediment accumulation rates. The rate of sediment accumulation increased slowly throughout the earlier part of the 20th century and then rapidly in the mid-1970's. These increases are attributed to human disturbances in the catchment, initially by olive planting and then by drainage of a wetland area.  相似文献

L. Naranbagh (alt. 1587 m) is a polymictic, shallow marl lake in the flood-plain valley of Kashmir, India. Macrofloral affinities resemble Potamogeton Type of Forsberg (1965) with alkaline waters, not rich in phosphorus. CaCO3 precipitation coupled with decline in Ca2+ and alkalinity values are characteristic of the lake. Fluctuations in Mg2+, Na+, K+, and Cl were relatively conservative. The levels of PO inf4 sup3– -P and NO inf3 sup– -N indicate moderate fertility of the lake water.Persistence of a summer-autumn planktonic algal pulse is related to favourable irradiance, high water temperatures, and increased photosynthetic efficiency values. The most striking seasonality in photosynthetic rates (m–2 h–1) between winter minimum (3 mg Cassim) and summer maximum (75.4 mg Cassim) is determined by mainly climatic changes. Energy flow gave annual phytoplankton production of 51.95 × 102 KJ m–2 for the ecosystem.The nutrient levels and productivity rates suggest mesotrophic status of L. Naranbagh in classic oligoeutrophic classification of lake types.  相似文献

As a result of high nutrient loading Lake Veluwe suffered from an almost permanent bloom of the blue-green algaOscillatoria agardhii Gomont. In 1979, the phosphorus loading of the lake was reduced from approx. 3 to 1 g P.m–2.a–1. Moreover, since then the lake has been flushed during winter periods with water low in phosphorus. This measure aimed primarily at interrupting the continuous algal bloom. The results of these measures show a sharp decline of total-phosphorus values from 0.40–0.60 mg P.l–1 (before 1980) to 0.10–0.20 mg P.l–1 (after 1980). Summer values for chlorophylla dropped from 200–400 mg.m–3 to 50–150 mg.m–3.The increase in transparency of the lake water was relatively small, from summer values of 15–25 cm before the implementation of the measures to 25–45 cm afterwards. The disappointing transparency values may be explained by the decreasing chlorophylla and phosphorus content of the algae per unit biovolume. Blue-green algae are gradually loosing ground. In the summer of 1985 green algae and diatoms dominated the phytoplankton for the first time since almost 20 years. To achieve the ultimate water quality objectives (transparency values of more than 100 cm in summer), the phosphorus loading has to be reduced further.  相似文献

Despite intensive biogeochemical research during the last thirty years, the relative importance of biological S turnover for the overall SO 4 2– budget of forested catchments remains uncertain. The objective of the present study was (i) to gain new insight into the S cycle of theLehstenbach catchment (Northeastern Bavaria, Germany) through the analysis of stable isotopes of S and (ii) to differentiate between sites which are hot spots for SO 4 2– reduction and sites where mineralization and adsorption/desorption processes are more important. The 34S values and SO 4 2– concentrations of soil solutions, throughfall and groundwater at four different sites as well as runoff of the catchment were measured. The relatively low variability of 34S in throughfall and bulk precipitation was in contrast to the high temporal and spatial variability of 34S in the soil solution. Sulfate in the soil solution of upland sites was slightly depleted in34S compared to input values. This was most likely due to S mineralization. Sulfate in the soil solution from wetland soils was clearly enriched in34S, indicating dissimilatory SO 4 2– reduction. The observed spatial and temporal patterns of34S turnover and SO 4 2– concentrations might explain the overall balanced S budget of the catchment. At a time of decreasing anthropogenic deposition SO 4 2– is currently released from upland soils. Furthermore, mineralization of organic S may contribute to SO 4 2– release. Wetland soils in the catchment represent a sink for SO 4 2– due to dissimilatory SO 4 2– reduction.  相似文献

Feeding of Euchlanis dilatata lucksiana, a brachionid rotifer isolated from the Loosdrecht Lakes (The Netherlands), was examined in the laboratory using 14C-labelled food. The gut-filling time at a food concentration of 9.6 µg C ml–1 was about 15 minutes. Animals which were fed on 3 size fractions of the lake seston (< 7 µm, 7–15 µm, and 15–33 µm) showed a clear preference (Jacobs' selectivity index) for the largest size fraction. This fraction was composed predominantly of filamentous cyanobacteria. For animals weighing 0.37–0.49 µm C ind.–1 the daily ration (daily food consumption per unit body weight × 100) ranged from 50 to 100% at food levels of 2 mg C l–1 and below, but increased to 150–250% at food concentrations of 5 mg C l–1 and above. The assimilation efficiency was 100% up to 5 mg C l–1 of food, but decreased to about 80% at higher food levels.  相似文献

The major cyanobacteria in Crawford Lake are benthic mat forming Lyngbya and Oscillatoria and not phytoplankton. The eutrophication of the lake has resulted in a decline in the mat forming cyanobacteria as inferred from palaeopigment analyses of the core from this lake. In previous palaeolimnological studies the concentrations of oxillaxanthin and myxoxanthophyll have been used as correlates with lake trophic levels. High concentration of oscillaxanthin and myxoxanthophyll were interpreted as indicating eutrophic conditions prevailed. Our results indicated that when Crawford Lake was most eutrophic little oscillaxanthin and myxoxanthophyll was produced. High values of 13C at the depth of 34–48 cm (1500–1760 A. D.) were related to a dense population of benthic Oscillatoria and Lyngbya living on the bottom of the lake during that period. The Oscillatoria and Lyngbya utilize bicarbonate as a source of inorganic carbon. Carbonate has a high 13C value. Very low 13C values were found at 0–7 cm (1955–1992 A. D.) in the Crawford sediment core at the time when phyto- plankton dominated the core. Phytoplankton are enriched in 12C by photosynthetic assimilation of CO2.  相似文献

Summary The net loss of KCl observed in Ehrlich ascites cells during regulatory volume decrease (RVD) following hypotonic exposure involves activation of separate conductive K+ and Cl transport pathways. RVD is accelerated when a parallel K+ transport pathway is provided by addition of gramicidin, indicating that the K+ conductance is rate limiting. Addition of ionophore A23187 plus Ca2+ also activates separate K+ and Cl transport pathways, resulting in a hyperpolarization of the cell membrane. A calculation shows that the K+ and Cl conductance is increased 14-and 10-fold, respectively. Gramicidin fails to accelerate the A23187-induced cell shrinkage, indicating that the Cl conductance is rate limiting. An A23187-induced activation of42K and36Cl tracer fluxes is directly demonstrated. RVD and the A23187-induced cell shrinkage both are: (i) inhibited by quinine which blocks the Ca2+-activated K+ channel. (ii) unaffected by substitution of NO 3 or SCN for Cl, and (iii) inhibited by the anti-calmodulin drug pimozide. When the K+ channel is blocked by quinine but bypassed by addition of gramicidin, the rate of cell shrinkage can be used to monitor the Cl conductance. The Cl conductance is increased about 60-fold during RVD. The volume-induced activation of the Cl transport pathway is transient, with inactivation within about 10 min. The activation induced by ionophore A23187 in Ca2+-free media (probably by release of Ca2+ from internal stores) is also transient, whereas the activation is persistent in Ca2+-containing media. In the latter case, addition of excess EGTA is followed by inactivation of the Cl transport pathway. These findings suggest that a transient increase in free cytosolic Ca2+ may account for the transient activation of the Cl transport pathway. The activated anion transport pathway is unselective, carrying both Cl, Br, NO 3 , and SCN. The anti-calmodulin drug pimozide blocks the volume- or A23187-induced Cl transport pathway and also blocks the activation of the K+ transport pathway. This is demonstrated directly by42K flux experiments and indirectly in media where the dominating anion (SCN) has a high ground permeability. A comparison of the A23187-induced K+ conductance estimated from42K flux measurements at high external K+, and from net K flux measurements suggests single-file behavior of the Ca2+-activated K+ channel. The number of Ca2+-activated K+ channels is estimated at about 100 per cell.  相似文献

Summary The formation of wall appositions (plugs) by ionophore A 23187, CaCl2, LaCl3, and nifedipine was studied in mature internodal cells of characeaen algae. CaCl2 at concentrations above 10–2M induces thick fibrillar plugs without callose inNitella flexilis. InChara corallina andNitella flexilis ionophore A 23187 (1.25×10–5 to 5×10–5M) and LaCl3 (7.5×10–5 to 2.5×10–4M) cause flat appositions which contain callose and have a more granular structure. Plug formation by ionophore A 23187, CaCl2, and LaCl3 is pH-dependent and occurs beneath the alkaline regions of the cell. Nifedipine (10–4 to 10–5M) induces plugs inNitella flexilis after previous injury. These callose-containing wall appositions consist of a heterogeneous granular core which is covered by a fibrillar layer. The results of this work are compared with previous studies on wound wall formation and chlortetracycline (CTC)-induced plug formation which reveal that abundant coated vesicles occur only when a thick fibrillar wall layer is formed. Neither LaCl3 nor nifedipine inhibit the formation of CaCl2- or CTC-plugs. The unusual effects of these substances, which normally act as Ca2+ antagonists and therefore should prevent and not induce plug formation, are discussed. Synopsis We measured stable isotope ratios (δ13C and δ15N) of invertebrates, Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar, and brook trout, Salvelinus fontinalis, in three distinct freshwater environments (headwater tributary, ultra-oligotrophic lake, and main-stem river) in the Western Brook system, Newfoundland, Canada. Large differences in the stable carbon signatures of invertebrates allowed the identification of organic matter assimilation from each environment by resident parr and migrating smolts. Brook trout captured in the headwater tributary in June had a carbon signature characteristic of the tributary, while those collected in August had enriched 13C (maximum = −15.6‰) and 15N (maximum = 12.8‰) values. These enriched carbon and nitrogen signatures were indicative of foraging at sea. There was a low correlation between δ13C and δ15N (r2 = 0.198) for individual fish that was likely due to the confounding influence of trout feeding in the lake and the lower main-stem of the river, where δ13C of food sources was high but δ15N was low. Smolts emigrating from Western Brook Pond where they had been foraging (based on lacustrine carbon signatures) were significantly larger than those emigrating from a nursery brook and the main river in the same basin, despite having the same median age. These results suggest better growth opportunities in the lake environment. Trout fork length was positively correlated with δ13C and δ15N, demonstrating that larger individuals had been feeding outside the brook. These results support previous studies that found increased growth potential for salmonids in lacustrine and marine environments, and further, indicate possible adaptive advantages for salmonid movement away from natal brooks.  相似文献

Caesium-137 and lead-210 dating of recent sediments from Mondsee (Austria)   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0  
Mean annual sedimentation rates over the last 20–30 years were determined in the pre-alpine Mondsee (Upper Austria) using Cs-137 and Pb(Po)-210 profiles for sediment core dating and two natural sediment markers. Lower sedimentation rates of about 2–3 mm yr–1 were observed in the central part of the lake near the shore at 18–20 m and in the southern part at 30 m depth. Higher sedimentation rates of 4–7 mm yr–1 were found in the central part of the lake at 47 and 65 m and in the northern bay at 18 and 41 m depth. At both these sites the Pb-210 profiles were strongly disturbed in the upper zone of the sediment cores, whereas the Cs-137 pattern remained intact. The higher annual sediment accumulation rates can be explained only partly by deposition of allochthonous material discharged by the streams, enhanced eutrophication in these parts of the lake, erosion and sediment focusing by turbidity currents being also probable.  相似文献

The ionic fluxes associated with the ATP-dependent acidification of endocytic vesicles were studied in a preparation isolated from rabbit reticulocytes enriched for transferrin-transferrin receptor complexes. No vesicle acidification was observed in the absence of intra- and extravesicular ions (sucrosein/sucroseout), while maximal acidification was observed with NaClin/KClout·K in + was a poor substitute for Na in + , and Cl out could be replaced by other anions with the following efficacy of acidification: Cl>Br>I>PO 4 3– >gluconate>SO 4 2– . Flux studies using36Cl and22Na+ showed that the vesicles had a permeability for Cl and Na+, and that ATP-dependent H+ pumping was accompanied by a net influx of Cl and a net efflux of Na+ provided that there was a Na+ concentration gradient. After 3 mins, the time necessary to maximal acidification, the electrical charge generated by the entrance of H+ was countered to about 45% by the Cl influx and to about 42% by the Na+ efflux. These studies demonstrated that both Cl and Na+ fluxes are necessary for optimal endocytic vesicle acidification.  相似文献

A comparative study was undertaken of the fate of fine sediment in the Ngerikiil and Ngerdorch mangrove-fringed estuaries in Babeldaob Island, Palau, Micronesia, in 2002. The mangroves comprised 3.8% of each catchment area, and in both systems, they trapped about 30% of the riverine sediment. Mangroves are important buffers protecting fringing coral reefs from excessive sedimentation. The sediment yield was significantly higher in the Ngerikiil River catchment (150 tons km–2 yr–1) that has been extensively cleared and farmed, than in Ngerdorch River catchment (1.9 tons km–2 yr–1) that was still relatively pristine during the study period.This revised version wa published online in March 2005 with corrections to the issue cover date.  相似文献

Although catchments have been implicated as an important source of metals to lakes, the catchment contribution of different metals is poorly known, and the anthropogenic contribution is not known at all. We determine the anthropogenic lake sediment burdens of Zn, Cu, Ni, Cr, and Pb for several Quebec and Ontario lakes, not subject to point source loading, to obtain estimates of atmospheric loading and inputs from terrestrial sources. To do this, we first collected multiple cores across 11 lake basins to estimate the whole-lake Pb burdens. As the whole-lake Pb burdens did not differ among lakes that spanned over two orders of magnitude in drainage ratios (drainage basin area/lake area), we conclude that catchment retention of anthropogenic Pb is complete. The anthropogenic Pb burdens were then used as a correction for focusing for the other metals. Among the metals, Cr and Ni were the most readily exported from drainage basins, followed by Cu. Zn showed no increase with drainage ratio, indicating Zn to be effectively retained by catchments. The export coefficients of the Pb corrected metals correlate well with ocean residence time, revealing a similar metal sorption/precipitation sequence in both soils and oceans. Sediment metal burdens provide a relatively easy way to obtain not only metal export coefficients from drainage basins, but also the atmospheric deposition of anthropogenic metals (e.g. Pb: S.E. Quebec, 950 mg*m–2: Laurentians, north of Montreal, 420 mg*m–2). The export coefficients are not only simpler to obtain than by mass balance measurements, but, in addition, identify the anthropogenic component.  相似文献

The whole-cell patch-clamp technique has been used to study membrane currents in cultured rabbit medullary thick ascending limb (MTAL) epithelial cells. A Ca2+-activated K+ current was characterized by its voltage-dependent and Ca2+-dependent properties. When the extracellular K+ ion concentration was increased from 2 to 140 mm, the rereversal potential (Ek) was shifted from –85 to 0 mV with a slope of 46 mV per e-fold change. The Ca2+-activated K+ current is blocked by charybdotoxin (CTX) in a manner similar to the apical membrane Ca2+-activated K+ channel studied with the single channel patch-clamp technique. The results suggest that the Ca2+-activated K+ current is the predominant, large conductance and Ca2+-dependent K+ pathway in the cultured MTAL cell apical membrane. The biophysical properties and physiological regulation of a Cl current were also investigated. This current was activated by stimulation of intracellular cAMP using forskolin and isobutyl-1-methylxanthine (IBMX). The current-voltage (I–V) relationship of the Cl current showed an outward-rectifying pattern in symmetrical Cl solution. The Cl selectivity of the whole-cell current was confirmed by tail current analysis in different Cl concentration bath solutions. Several Cl channel blockers were found to be effective in blocking the outward-rectifying Cl current in MTAL cells. The cAMP-dependent Cl transport in MTAL cells was further confirmed by measuring changes in the intensity of Cl sensitive dye using fluorescence microscopy. These results suggest that the Cl channel in the apical or basolateral membrane of MTAL cells may be regulated by cAMP-dependent protein-kinase-induced phosphorylation.This study was supported by the National Institutes of Health grants GM46834 to L.L. and DK32753 to W.B.G., and by a Grant-in-Aid from the American Heart Association of Ohio to L.L.  相似文献

The natural abundance of stable isotopes (δ13C and δ1315N) was determined for components of the pelagic food web in Loch Ness, a deep oligotrophic lake in northern Scotland, and compared with values from the inflow rivers and the catchment vegetation. Phytoplankton δ13C was low compared to values reported from other lakes, possibly reflecting a high use of 13C-depleted carbon dioxide from respired organic matter before further isotopic fractionation during photosynthesis. Phytoplankton δ13C was appreciably lower than that of dissolved and particulate organic matter (DOM and POM) in the loch. The DOM and POM were evidently overwhelmingly of allochthonous origin and ultimately derived from terrestrial plant detritus. The distinctive δ13C values for phytoplankton and detritus in the loch allowed the use of food sources by grazing crustacean zooplankton to be assessed, and the contributions of phytoplankton carbon and detrital carbon to zooplankton total body carbon appeared to be about equal. Comparison of δ13C and δ15N values for zooplankton and fish allowed assessment of trophic structure in the loch. The very high dependence of the pelagic food web in Loch Ness on allochthonous organic matter inputs from the catchment may be exceptional in a large lake, but has important implications for our understanding of lake ecosystem processes as well as for lake management.  相似文献

Secretion of bicarbonate has been described for distal nephron epithelium and attributed to apical Cl/HCO 3 exchange in beta-intercalated cells. We investigated the presence of this mechanism in cortical distal tubules by perfusing these segments with acid (pH 6) 10 mm phosphate Ringer. The kinetics of luminal alkalinization was studied in stationary microperfusion experiments by double-barreled pH (ion-exchange resin)/1 m KCl reference microelectrodes. Luminal alkalinization may be due to influx (into the lumen) of HCO 3 or OH, or efflux of H+. The magnitude of the Cl/ HCO 3 exchange component was measured by perfusing the lumen with solutions with or without chloride, which was substituted by gluconate. This component was not different from zero in control and alkalotic (chronic plus acute) Wistar rats. Homozygous Brattleboro rats (BRB), genetically devoid of antidiuretic hormone, were used since this hormone has been shown to stimulate H+ secretion, which could mask bicarbonate secretion. In these rats, no evidence for Cl/HCO 3 exchange was found in control BRB and in early distal segments of alkalotic animals, but in late distal tubule a significant component of 0.14±0.033 nmol/cm2 · sec was observed, which, however, is small when compared to the reabsorptive flow found in control Wistar rats, of 0.95±0.10 nmol/cm2 · sec. In addition, 5×10–4 m SITS had no effect on distal bicarbonate reabsorption in controls as well as on secretion in alkalotic Wistar and Brattleboro rats, which is compatible with the absence of effect of this drug on the apical Cl/HCO 3 exchange in other tissues. It is concluded that most distal alkalinization is not Cl dependent, and that Cl/HCO 3 exchange may be found in cortical distal tubule, but its magnitude is, even in alkalosis, markedly smaller than the reabsorptive flux, which predominates in the rats studied in this paper, keeping luminal pH lower than that of blood.  相似文献

Nutrient uptake by forest trees is dependent on ectomycorrhizal (EM) mycelia that grow out into the soil from the mycorrhizal root tips. We estimated the production of EM mycelia in root free samples of pure spruce and mixed spruce-oak stands in southern Sweden as mycelia grown into sand-filled mesh bags placed at three different soil depths (0–10, 10–20 and 20–30 cm). The mesh bags were collected after 12 months and we found that 590±70 kg ha–1 year–1 of pure mycelia was produced in spruce stands and 420±160 kg ha–1 year–1 in mixed stands. The production of EM mycelia in the mesh bags decreased with soil depth in both stand types but tended to be more concentrated in the top soil in the mixed stands compared to the spruce stands. The fungal biomass was also determined in soil samples taken from different depths by using phospholipid fatty acids as markers for fungal biomass. Subsamples were incubated at 20°C for 5 months and the amount of fungal biomass that degraded during the incubation period was used as an estimate of EM fungal biomass. The EM biomass in the soil profile decreased with soil depth and did not differ significantly between the two stand types. The total EM biomass in the pure spruce stands was estimated to be 4.8±0.9×103 kg ha–1 and in the mixed stands 5.8±1.1×103 kg ha–1 down to 70 cm depth. The biomass and production estimates of EM mycelia suggest a very long turnover time or that necromass has been included in the biomass estimates. The amount of N present in EM mycelia was estimated to be 121 kg N ha–1 in spruce stands and 187 kg N ha–1 in mixed stands. The 13C value for mycelia in mesh bags was not influenced by soil depth, indicating that the fungi obtained all their carbon from the tree roots. The 13C values in mycelia collected from mixed stands were intermediate to values from pure spruce and pure oak stands suggesting that the EM mycelia received carbon from both spruce and oak trees in the mixed stands. The 15N value for the EM mycelia and the surrounding soil increased with soil depth suggesting that they obtained their entire N from the surrounding soil.  相似文献
