Inter- and intra-regional variations in vertebrae morphology and growth increment counts (band counts) were analyzed for two carcharhinid shark species, Carcharhinus plumbeus (n = 10) and C. limbatus (n = 11). Five sequential vertebrae were removed from the cervical region, above the branchial chamber and posterior to the chondrocrainium, and thoracic region, below the first dorsal fin. Dorsal–ventral height, medial–lateral breadth, and caudal–cranial length were measured for each sampled vertebra. Results indicate no significant difference in vertebral morphology within a sampled region of the vertebral column. However, a significant difference in vertebral morphology was noted between regions for both shark species, with thoracic vertebrae consistently larger than cervical vertebrae. A sub-set of three vertebrae was taken from each sampled region of each shark for sectioning and counting of growth increments. Analyses of growth increment counts by two readers indicated no significant difference in band counts within and between sampled regions.  相似文献

Synopsis Sagittal otoliths from 50 king mackerel 2.9–13.0 mm SL and 72 Spanish mackerel 2.8–22.0 mm SL collected off the southeast U.S. were examined whole at 400 × using a compound microscope-video system. Otoliths of both species had visible, presumably daily, growth increments as well as finer subdaily increments. Otolith growth was directly proportional to growth in standard length for king (r2 = 0.91) and Spanish mackerel (r2 = 0.86). Spanish mackerel were estimated to be 3–15 d old with a mean absolute growth rate (SL/number of growth increments) and 95% confidence interval of 1.15 ± 0.07 mm · d–1. The least squares linear equation: SL = –1.30 + 1.31 (age in days), with r2 = 0.67 and p < 0.001, described the relationship between length and age. There was a significant positive relationship between absolute growth rate and fish length. King mackerel were estimated to be 3–15 d old with a mean absolute growth rate of 0.89 ± 0.06 mm d–1. The least squares linear equation: SL = 0.37 + 0.82 (age in days), with r2 = 0.77 and p < 0.001, best described the relationship between length and age. The relationship between growth rate and fish length was not significant. The growth rate of king mackerel was slightly higher for fish from the Mississippi River plume than from all other locations combined, while Spanish mackerel growth rates were not significantly different.  相似文献

Synopsis Eight hundred and one yellowfin tuna larvae ranging from 2.57–7.48 mm SL were collected near the Mississippi River discharge plume in the Gulf of Mexico during July and September, 1987. Larvae were most abundant at intermediate salinities (i.e. frontal waters) where chlorophylla and macrozooplankton displacement values were also highest. Using sagittal otolith microstructure, we estimated larval ages ranging from 3–14 d. These ages were used to back calculate spawning dates from 13–24 July and 22–31 August. Mean absolute individual growth rate (length age–1) was 0.47 mm d–1, with the least squares linear regression SL = 1.67 + 0.47 AGE (r2 = 0.60, Pr> F = 0.0001) representing the best growth curve. Highest growth occurred at intermediate salinities near 31%, and temperatures near 29° C. There was significant temporal variation in growth, with larvae collected in July growing slower than those from September (0.37 and 0.48 mm d–1, respectively). The pooled instantaneous daily mortality rate (Z) of the larvae was estimated to be 0.33 d–1 (0.16 d–1 in July and 0.41 d–1 in September). These results show that significant spawning of yellowfin tuna may occur in the northern Gulf of Mexico in the vicinity of the Mississippi River discharge plume, and suggest that larval growth and survival may be enhanced in the plume frontal waters.  相似文献

Microstructural growth in the sagittae ofSeastes schlegeli, a viviparous scorpaenid, is described from prenatal larval to early juvenile stages, and related to morphological changes. Embryos and prenatal larvae were extruded from a gravid female from 21 d prior to birth onwards, and released larvae reared and sampled up to 58 d after birth. Eggs hatched in the ovary 14 d prior to birth. At this time, otoliths consisted of a core surrounded by a prominent check, similar to the otolith structure seen in oviparous fishes. Fourteen growth increments had been deposited by birth. The parturition mark it-self comprised a prominent check and narrow growth increment Growth increments were deposited daily from hatching up to 58 d after birth, whereas accessory primordia first appeared in otoliths by ca. 32 d after birth, at a specimen total length of ca. 13 mm. This corresponded to the period during which the larvae metamorphosed into juveniles. Otoliths grew exponentially during the larval stage and linearly during the juvenile stage. when plotted against total length. Growth in total length from hatching to 58 d after birth could be represented by the Gompertz curve.  相似文献

Two methods are described for estimating position-time relationships (pathlines) in steady, one-dimensional growth zones. Pathlines can be used to provide a time base for spatial data in developmental studies. The methods apply within extension-only zones (zones of growth without cell division) and require data for cell-number densities, or cumulative cell numbers, or mean cell lengths, and for the overall elongation rate of an organ. The first method (continuous-pathline method) can be used to estimate spatial velocity fields within extension-only zones and pathlines can then be obtained by integration of the velocity data. This method is based on the continuity equation for cell-number densities. Pathlines can also be estimated using a simple graphical version of this method. The second method (pathline-coordinate method) is based on the approximation that a cell of mean length remains of mean length as it moves through the extension-only zone, and can be used to estimate the coordinates of wall pathlines at discrete intervals. The methods are illustrated using published data from studies of apical growth in Zea mays L. roots and of intercalary growth in Triticum aestivum L. leaves.  相似文献

The Pacific nodule province covered about 4.5 million km2 in the east tropical Pacific with an abundance of polymetallic nodules at the seafloor. In view of the environmental protection and resource preservation, the survey of biodiversity was important during the reconnaissance and exploitation in this area. As one of the important component of the deep sea ecosystem, the microbial community in the Pacific nodule province was still largely unknown. The chitinolytic bacteria diversity in deep-sea sediment of a station within the Pacific nodule province was examined by molecular technology. A total of 18 chitinase genes were detected by a set of degenerate PCR primer specific for chiA gene fragment of family 18 chitinase. Most of them belonged to the Serratia-like chitinase. Eight genes had different amino acid sequences in the conserved motif, encompassing the catalytic site among the ChiA protein of family 18 glycosyl hydrolases, and clustered in an independent clade on the phylygenetic tree.  相似文献

Two Streptomyces strains were grown on sugarcane bagasse and groundnut hulls lignocelluloses in semi-solid state culture at 37°C for 12 weeks. Best results gave a 45% depletion of sugarcane bagasse lignocellulose with a 21% crude protein content of final material. The celX gene encoding an extracellular cold-active cellulase was isolated from a psychrotrophic bacterium, which was isolated from deep-sea sediment and identified as a Pseudoalteromonas species. It encoded a protein consisting of 492 amino acids with a calculated molecular mass of 52.7 kDa. The CelX consisted of an N-terminal catalytic domain belonging to glycoside hydrolase family 5 and a C-terminal cellulose-binding domain belonging to carbohydrate-binding module family 5. The long linker sequence connecting both domains was composed of 105 residues. The optimal temperature for cellulase activity of CelX was 40°C. The enzyme was most active at pH 6–7 and showed better resistance to alkaline condition. The zymogram activity analysis indicated that the CelX consisted of single enzyme component. The cellobiose was main hydrolysate of CelX.  相似文献

The rhesus population at Tughlaqabad is characterized by (1) moderately high natality, (2) a changing and perhaps stabilizing age structure, and (3) a declining growth rate. Although natality at this site has been high and relatively invariant over a 7-year period, the proportion of nonreproducing juveniles has increased, necessitating a lower rate of growth. The trapping of rhesus for export, which was practiced in India as recently as 1978, may be largely responsible for the changing nature of the Tughlaqabad age structure but this conclusion remains only conjectural.  相似文献

Summary Responses to defoliation were studied in two tallgrass prairie perennials (Andropogon gerardii and Panicum virgatum) established from seed at three densities. P. virgatum was also grown from transplanted rhizomes of established clones. Plants of both species displayed a continuum of responses to defoliation, from large reductions in biomass, tillering and seed production to significant increases in one or more performance measures. In crowded populations, defoliation shifted plants into subordinate positions within the competitive hierarchy. Plants competing intraspecifically and those that were initially small suffered more from defoliation than either plants grown at low density or those that were larger than their neighbors. At the highest plant density, the effects of defoliation or initial plant size were overshadowed by the effects of crowding. When defoliated and grown at similar densities, P. virgatum and A. gerardii grown from seed showed large reductions in biomass, seed production, and new rhizome production, but established P. virgatum ramets grown from rhizomes showed increases in these performance measures. Thus, herbivory may be particularly detrimental to P. virgatum during juvenile stages before perennating organs have developed. Overcompensation of P. virgatum clones in response to defoliation only occurred if all ramets within the clone were defoliated. In clones containing both defoliated and undamaged ramets, there were no differences in their performance, suggesting that genets are capable of integrating the effects of differential defoliation among shoots. Defoliated P. virgatum clones allocated a smaller fraction of their total biomass to new rhizomes, indicating that the short-term regrowth response following defoliation may incur a longer-term cost associated with gradual reduction in biomass of the perennating organs and reduced genet success.  相似文献

The effect of blue light on hypocotyl extension in de-etiolated seedlings of lettuce, cucumber and tomato was investigated under conditions which precluded the involvement of phytochrome. Small but highly inhibitory amounts of blue light were added to a high intensity background illumination from low pressure sodium lamps. A log-linear response for inhibition of hypocotyl extension against the blue light fluence rate was obtained for lettuce and cucumber, and inhibition in tomato was also related to the blue light fluence rate. The added blue light did not alter phytochrome photostationary state and its effect was independent of the total fluence rate. Growth inhibition by Pfr could be demonstrated in tomato and cucumber but not in lettuce. The effects of growth retardants, 4-hydroxy-5-isopropyl-2-methylphenyltrimethylammonium chloride-1-piperidine carboxylate (AMO-1618 or AMO) and 2-chloroethyltrimethylammonium chloride (CCC), applied with and without gibberellic acid (GA3), on -[3H]alanine uptake and leakage from pea (Pisum sativum L.) and betacyanin efflux from beetroot (Beta vulgaris L.) tissue were examined. Both compounds decreased the amount of -[3H]alanine taken up into pea leaf discs, and increased the quantity of radioactive label that subsequently leaked out of this tissue. Efflux of betacyanin from slices of beetroot was also found to be promoted by treatment with CCC or AMO-1618. In no case were these effects reversed by application of GA3. The age and growth of North Pacific albacore Thunnus alalunga were investigated using obliquely sectioned sagittal otoliths from samples of 126 females and 148 males. Otolith edge analysis indicated that the identified annulus in a sagittal otolith is primarily formed during the period from September to February. The assessments of the fish age at first annulus formation indicated that the first annulus represents an age of <1 year. This study presents an age estimate (0·75 years) for the formation of the first annulus. The oldest fish ages observed in this study were 10 years for females and 14 years for males. The von Bertalanffy growth parameters of females estimated were L(∞) = 103·5 cm in fork length (L(F) ), K = 0·340 year(-1) and t(0) = -0·53 years, and the parameters of males were L(∞) = 114·0 cm, K = 0·253 year(-1) and t(0) = -1·01 years. Sexual size dimorphism between males and females seemed to occur after reaching sexual maturity. The coefficients of the power function for expressing the L(F) -mass relationship obtained from sex-pooled data were a = 2·964 × 10(-5) and b = 2·928.  相似文献

Two species of Anthopleura, A. ballii and A. thallia, co-occur in Northern Europe with Bunodosoma biscayensis, a species closely allied to Anthopleura. The historical factors underlying their distribution are here investigated as part of a preliminary phylogenetic analysis of morphological data. Based on this analysis, Bunodosoma is nested within Anthopleura, and B. biscayensis is more closely related to members of Anthopleura than to other members of Bunodosoma. Because B. biscayensis also has adhesive verrucae, rather than non-adhesive, rounded vesicles, it is transferred to Anthopleura.The tree consists of two major clades, each of which includes species from the Atlantic and the Pacific. The tree shows geographic structure: one clade includes species found only in the Northern Hemisphere, and the other includes widespread species and species found only in the Southern Hemisphere. Although all of the European species of Anthopleura are part of the Northern Hemisphere clade, none are one another’s closest relative.  相似文献

The Waikato River (latitude 38°S, longitude 176°E, North Island, New Zealand) is overwhelming y dominated by diatoms (mainly Melosira species) while blue-green and green algae are of minor importance. Both laboratory and in situ nutrient enrichment experiments showed enhanced growth of natural and index blue-green and green algae by addition of phosphate and nitrate. These algae were also shown to require higher temperature and light intensity than the diatoms. On the other hand, Waikato River with its higher silica content, moderate range of temperature and running water habitat was more favourable an environment for diatoms.  相似文献

A new genus of a deep-sea ascomycete with one new species, Alisea longicolla, is described based on analyses of 18S and 28S rDNA sequences and morphological characters. A. longicolla was found together with Oceanitis scuticella, on small twigs and sugar cane debris trawled from the bottom of the Pacific Ocean off Vanuatu Islands. Molecular and morphological characters indicate that both fungi are members of Halosphaeriaceae. Within this family, O. scuticella is phylogenetically related to Ascosalsum and shares similar ascospore morphology and appendage ontogeny. The genus Ascosalsum is considered congeneric with Oceanitis and Ascosalsum cincinnatulum, Ascosalsum unicaudatum and Ascosalsum viscidulum are transferred to Oceanitis, an earlier generic name.  相似文献

Data from tagging studies and stable isotope ratio analyses (18O and 13C) in otoliths of tagged Pacific halibut, Hippoglossus stenolepis, provided unique information about halibut distribution and area migration. The 18O values of otoliths of individual halibut tagged in the Bering Sea and the Gulf of Alaska ranged from –0.5 to +1.0 VPDB (Vienna Peedee belemnite) in the first few years, but gradually increased to 2.0–2.5 VPDB when these tagged fish were recaptured as adults in waters off British Columbia. Similar isotopic variations were found in 13C. Comparison of isotopic composition from the age-1 halibut (i.e., aragonite samples taken from the first annulus of otoliths) and the adult (ages 8) indicated that the ocean conditions between the Bering Sea and the northeast Pacific were markedly different over the tagging period, but the area boundaries between the Gulf of Alaska and British Columbia were not clear. We concluded that stable isotopic records in otoliths of tagged Pacific halibut were informative and particularly useful for details of subsequent movement of halibut between release and recovery.  相似文献

Two sesquiterpene lactones belonging to the germacranolides were isolated from the leaves and stems of Helianthus annuus L. Their formation in the plant is light-dependent. Both sesquiterpene lactones (SL) strongly inhibit indole-3-acetic acid (IAA)-induced elongation growth of Avena sativa L. coleoptile segments and Helianthus annuus L. hypocotyl segments. Both SL do not, however, inhibit acid-induced growth nor growth triggered by fusicoccin at all. In the presence of dithiothreitol (DTT), the inhibitory effect of SL in the Avena-segment-test can be completely neutralized. This can be attributed to the binding of DTT to both SL. Using thin-layer-chromatography it could be shown that the inhibitors build adducts with SH-rich compounds, e.g., cysteine, glutathione, mercapto-ethanol, and DTT, whose Rf-value significantly differs from those of the primary substances. If the coleoptile segments are first treated with an inhibitor and the inhibitor is subsequently washed out, close to normal elongation growth can be induced by adding an IAA-solution. If the segments are simultaneously treated with inhibitor and IAA, no notable growth can be initiated for an extended amount of time, after the removal of both substances and the anewed addition of IAA. Fusicoccin, however, can immediately neutralize the induced growth inhibition. The same irreversible inhibition is observed when 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) is used: If coleoptile segments are treated with an inhibitor plus 2,4-D or an inhibitor plus 3,5-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (3,5-D), respectively, IAA-induced growth after removal of the substances can only be observed by those coleoptiles which had previously been treated with the non-auxin, 3,5-D plus an inhibitor. Based on these results, a possible mechanism describing how the inhibitor functions is discussed. The binding of an auxin to an auxin receptor sets a SH-group free (possibly due to a change in the conformation of the receptor); a site is given to which the inhibitor can bind irreversibly (via a S-bond). The IAA-receptor-inhibitor-complex is then no longer able to initiate elongation growth. If auxin is not present, no lasting bond between the inhibitor and the receptor can occur, since the essential SH-group remains masked. The inhibitor can be washed out again. Summary In our wide-ranging research on in vitro propagation of some monocotyledonous plants, two Commelinaceae species were studied: Tradescantia fluminensis var. foliis variegatis and Tradescantia pallida. Initial cultures were established successfully using nodal and apical meristems that produced single shoots, many roots, and no callus, by utilizing growth regulator-free MS medium. Addition of growth regulators did not increase the activity of explants that produced single or multiple shoots, atypical roots, and no callus. Consecutive cultures were possible using the apical and nodal meristems of the previous generation. The behavior of the different generations in culture did not change and was similar to the initial cultures. Their growth capacity was maintained over many months, also on a growth regulator-free medium. In both species, the chromosome number in the root tips of the mother plant and all morphologically stable in vitro plantlets confirmed a constant ploidy level, in T. fluminensis 2n=72, and in T. pallida 2n=24.  相似文献

柔鱼(Ommastrephes bartramii)是西北太平洋海域重要的经济头足类,短生命周期的生活史特征决定其资源丰度易受海洋环境变化影响。根据1998—2010年我国鱿钓船生产统计资料和环境资料,包括海表温度(SST)和叶绿素浓度(Chl-a)数据,结合Nio 3.4区海表温距平值(SSTA),分析了SST和Chl-a浓度的季节和年际变化特征,并分别探讨了SST和Chl-a浓度距平值与Nio 3.4区SSTA及柔鱼资源丰度之间的关系。结果表明,产卵场海域Chl-a浓度冬季高夏季低,SST则夏季高冬季低;育肥场Chl-a和SST均呈夏季高冬季低变化,但6—12月份Chl-a浓度波动明显。产卵场和育肥场SST及Chl-a浓度年际变化明显。同时研究发现,厄尔尼诺、拉尼娜和正常年份时Nio 3.4区SSTA对柔鱼产卵场和育肥场环境的调控机制不同:拉尼娜和正常年份产卵场和育肥场温度上升,叶绿素浓度变化幅度小,有利于资源量补充,产量较高;厄尔尼诺年份温度和叶绿素均降低,尤其育肥场叶绿素浓度,对资源量产生不利影响,产量锐减。研究利用多元线性回归分别建立了基于温度和叶绿素的柔鱼资源丰度的预测模型,两者均能很好的预测柔鱼资源丰度(P0.05),但基于叶绿素的预测模型优于温度模型。  相似文献
