Summary Fourty four species of native wild herbaceous legumes belonging to 12 genera and associated with mature fallow lands of the derived savanna were collected from seven random locations encompassing an estimated area of 10,800 km2 and containing the seven different geomorphological soil formations in Anambra State of Nigeria.The number of legume species found differed according to the dominant grass in the fallows sampled, more species being associated with Andropogon, Hyperrhenia and Pennisetum than with Imperata and Loudetia. Detailed vegetation analysis of one hectare of fallow land dominated by Loudetia in one of the locations revealed that legumes comprised about 3% of the species encountered.In greenhouse trials, all the 19 species studied nodulated. The correlation (r=0.646) between fresh weight of nodules and dry weight of tops was significant at 0.01 level. Leaf N in these species ranged from 4.27% to 1.88%.The study indicated that a large number of naturally occurring herbaceous leguminous species, some of which appear to have promising potentials for increasing the N economy of the ecosystem, exists in the fallow land of the derived savanna.  相似文献

A comparative analysis of the Orthopteran population in virgin and fallow lands of the European steppe has allowed finding out the colonization sources of the fallow lands: the inhabitants of the mesophytic intrazonal plant communities, including the formations of steppe bushes and polytopic species living in intact and disturbed steppe habitats have been found there. It has been shown that the structure of the Orthopteran population in the fallow lands in determined more by the composition of their plant cover than by the actual age of fallow lands or their zonal position. Fundamental changes in the structure of Orthopteran population are associated with the replacement of tall weed communities by an herb-grass cover; the faunistic similarity between the old fallow lands and zonal plots therewith increases. The abundance of Orthopteras in the fallow lands increases southward, while in zonal communities a reverse tendency is observed. The Orthopteran populations in the fallow lands of all the subzones are characterized by higher diversity and evenness if compared to zonal biotopes. A wide distribution of fallow lands with weed cover turns out to increase the faunistic and ecological diversity of the Orthopteran populations in the European steppe.  相似文献

An approach to the acquisition of retrospective information on the radioactive pollution of the territories to organize the radioecological monitoring of environment was proposed. The approach is based on the application of the method of dendrochronoindication, allowing one to obtain the retrospective information on the delivery and accumulation of radioactive and other chemicals in the growth rings of the trees. Statistical processing and the analysis of the arrays of the multidimensional retrospective data was carried out using the principal components method. It was shown that the approach proposed allows one to reveal the emergency emissions that took place in the past at the enterprises of nuclear industry and make a well-grounded selection of the monitoring sites to establish the radioecological monitoring in the zones of nuclear industry impact.  相似文献

This study investigated the roles played by area enclosures and fallow age in the restoration of plant species richness and soil seed bank species richness in degraded mountain rangelands in northern Ethiopia. Management types (enclosures versus grazed) influenced woody and herbaceous species richness, while fallow age showed no effect on the woody species. Management, age and the doubling of fallow age influenced the herbaceous species richness and species diversity. Management showed no effect on soil seed bank species richness. Fallow age and the doubling of fallow time also showed no influence on the soil seed bank of grass species, but they were influential on the forbs species soil seed bank. The trends for restoration of plant species richness and diversity and grass seed bank in response to fallow age were positive‐linear, but they declined when the fallow ages were doubled. The exception was the forbs seed bank showed linear trends when age of restoration was doubled. The data suggest that the restoration of degraded rangelands in the high mountain zones of northern Ethiopia was still in the weedy succession stages. Long‐term monitoring will be required to gain an informed understanding of the roles played by area enclosures and fallow age in the restoration of plant biodiversity.  相似文献

The study was conducted to compare species richness and diversity in different ecosystems and abiotic factors. The results showed that the sacred groves had a plant genetic diversity composed of a total of 42, 65 and 82 ethno‐botanical species of herbs, shrubs and trees, respectively, with varied qualities. There were six herbaceous species common in the fallow ecosystem and the sacred groves, 35 herbaceous species found in the sacred grove and absent in the fallow vegetation and 70 herbaceous species in the fallow vegetation and absent in the ground layer of the sacred groves. Thirty‐two regenerated species and 49 nonregenerated tree species were found in the sacred groves. The herbaceous α‐diversity was significantly higher in the fallows than the sacred groves at the low altitude. The tree species richness was higher at the low altitude compared to the high altitude with tree β‐diversity increasing with altitude. Varying combinations of soil pH, total P, total K, CEC and slope per cent were related to some of the parameters evaluated. Biodiversity changes in the sacred groves may be governed by biophysical drivers, while a combination of human and biophysical explained the variation in rotational fallow vegetation.  相似文献

Data on the current radioecological status of lake Bolshoi Igish in the Middle Ural are presented in the paper. The lake is situated on the central axis of the East-Urals radioactive trace which was formed as a result of the 1957 nuclear accident at the Mayak Production Association. The distribution of 90Sr and 137Cs in the major components of the water basin is shown. Seasonal dynamics of the specific activity of radionuclides in water and in bottom deposits has been investigated. The current community of the higher water plant species has been studied. The paper discusses the concentration of 90Sr and 137Cs in the macrophyts of lake Bolshoi Igish depending on their species.  相似文献

Abstract To characterize the altitudinal and successional trends in microbial biomass and to understand their role in soil nutrient dynamics during the aggradation phase (vegetation recovery) of abandoned shifting cultivation systems, we determined the soil properties and microbial C and N in jhum (slash‐and‐burn) cultivation systems at different altitudes and 1‐, 7‐, and 16‐year‐old fallow agricultural lands at lower and higher altitudes in the northeastern Indian hills. Density of ground vegetation was lower in the undisturbed forest than in the jhum fallows. In general, 1‐year jhum fallow had greater herbaceous vegetation both at lower and higher altitudes. Although woody plants were observed in 7‐ and 16‐year‐old jhum fallows, their density was highest in the forest. Soil moisture, organic C, and total N also increased gradually with increasing altitude and progressive secondary succession. Soil pH showed a negative correlation with altitude (as also confounded by soil type) and fallow age. Both microbial C and N had a close correlation with altitude and fallow age. Contribution of microbial C to soil organic C was 2.0–2.6% and microbial N to total N 1.4–2.2% in jhum fields, 2.4–4.3% and 1.2–2.1%, respectively, in jhum fallows, and 2.5–2.9% and 1.6–1.9% in the forests. Microbial C and N showed a negative correlation with herbaceous plant density. Microbial biomass in the jhum fallows and forest stands had a positive relationship with woody vegetation. Along an altitudinal and/or successional gradient, microbial C and N were positively correlated with water‐holding capacity, soil moisture, organic C, and total N and negatively correlated with soil pH. Microbial C and N were positively correlated with each other. Therefore, the study suggests that the altitudinal and successional dynamics of microbial C and N are linked to, among other properties, soil organic matter and total nitrogen contents in the soil during community development after land abandonment from shifting cultivation.  相似文献

A quantitative study of the mollusk population of the herbaceous layer has been carried out in the secondary upland meadows in a gradient of pollution with emissions from the Middle Ural Copper Smelter (MUCS) (city of Revda, Sverdlovsk oblast). The total abundance of mollusks is 1.3 times lower in a moderately polluted area than in reference areas. The mollusks disappear entirely from the grass cover in close proximity to the smelter. The reasons for the change in the mollusk population structure may be as follows: a heavy-metal toxic effect under conditions of environmental acidification, a lack of available Ca due to its depletion from the upper soil horizons, a reduction in species diversity, and a simplification of meadow grasscover architecture (which modifies the hydrothermal regime in the herbaceous layer). Apparently, a combination of these effects eliminates mollusks from the herbaceous layer, a trend which is not observed in the case of environmental pollution with only heavy metals.  相似文献

Abstract. In southern Mediterranean Pinus sylvestris forests there are grassy meadows that resist invasion of trees despite the proximity to seed sources. In this study, we investigate the mechanisms blocking colonization by Pinus sylvestris of the meadows. Two experiments were conducted in which seeds were sown either at 1 cm depth or on the surface to simulate dispersal, and three treatments of vegetation removal were applied: Disturbed (where the herbaceous layer was eliminated, exposing the mineral soil), Clipped (vegetation cut at ground level) and Control (no disturbance of the herbaceous layer). In addition, the effect of seed predators was controlled by using wire cages in the case of the surface sown experiment. When seeds were sown at 1 cm depth, seedling emergence was not reduced by the herbaceous layer. In contrast, when seeds were surface sown and predators were excluded, the rate of emergence was low in the Control treatment, intermediate in Clipped and high in Disturbed. Seedling emergence was, however, minimal when predators were not excluded, irrespective of the disturbance level. Seedling survival and growth after three years of study were similar among treatments. The results show that the seed predation and the physical barrier created by the herbaceous layer are the two mechanisms blocking the encroachment of Pinus sylvestris onto these Mediterranean mountain meadows, limiting the regeneration and potential expansion of the forest.  相似文献

The carbon content of microbial biomass and the kinetic characteristics of microbial respiration response to substrate introduction have been estimated for chernozem soils of different farm lands: arable lands used for 10, 46, and 76 years, mowed fallow land, non-mowed fallow land, and woodland. Microbial biomass and the content of microbial carbon in humus (Cmic/Corg) decreased in the following order: soils under forest cenoses-mowed fallow land-10-year arable land-46- and 75-year arable land. The amount of microbial carbon in the long-plowed horizon was 40% of its content in the upper horizon of non-mowed fallow land. Arable soils were characterized by a lower metabolic diversity of microbial community and by the highest portion of microorganisms able to grow directly on glucose introduced into soil. The effects of different scenarios of carbon sequestration in soil on the reserves and activity of microbial biomass are discussed.  相似文献

Land‐use change is the most important driver of biodiversity loss worldwide and particularly so in the tropics, where natural habitats are transformed into large‐scale monocultures or heterogeneous landscape mosaics of largely unknown conservation value. Using birds as an indicator taxon, we evaluated the conservation value of a landscape mosaic in northeastern Madagascar, a biodiversity hotspot and the center of global vanilla production. We assessed bird species richness and composition by conducting point counts across seven prevalent land‐use types (forest‐ and fallow‐derived vanilla agroforests, woody and herbaceous fallow that are part of a shifting cultivation system, rice paddy, forest fragment and contiguous old‐growth forest). We find that old‐growth forest had the highest species richness, driven by a high share of endemics. Species richness and community composition in forest‐derived vanilla agroforest were similar to forest fragment, whereas fallow‐derived vanilla agroforest was most comparable to woody fallow. The open land‐use types herbaceous fallow and rice paddy had fewest species. Across forest fragments, vanilla agroforests, and woody fallows, endemic bird species richness was positively correlated to landscape‐scale forest cover. We conclude that both fallow‐ and forest‐derived vanilla agroforests play an important but contrasting role for bird conservation: Fallow‐derived agroforests are less valuable but take fallow land out of the shifting cultivation cycle, possibly preventing further degradation. Conversely, forest‐derived agroforests contribute to forest degradation but may avoid total loss of tree cover from forest fragments. Regular mowing of grassland is often necessary for plant conservation, but uncut vegetation is needed by many arthropods for overwintering. This may lead to conflicting management strategies for plant and arthropod conservation. Rotational fallows are a possible solution. They provide a spatio-temporal mosaic of mown and unmown areas that may combine benefits to both plants and arthropods. We tested if rotational fallows enhance spider overwintering in fen meadows. Rotational fallows consisted of three adjoining strips 10 m wide and 35–50 m long. Each year, one of these strips was left unmown (fallow) in an alternating manner so that each strip was mown two out of three years. Spiders were sampled during spring with emergence traps in nine pairs of currently unmown fallow strips and completely mown reference plots. Fallows significantly enhanced orb-weavers (Araneidae), sac spiders (Clubionidae) and ground spiders (Gnaphosidae). However, only 4.7% of the total variation in community composition was attributable to fallows. Community variation was larger between landscapes (34.5%) and sites (38.2%). Also β diversity was much higher between landscapes (45 species) and sites (22 species) than between fallows and mown reference plots (10 species). We conclude that the first priority for spider conservation is to preserve as many fen meadows in different landscapes as possible. Locally, rotational fallows enhance overwintering of the above-mentioned spider families, which are sensitive to mowing in other grassland types as well. Thus, rotational fallows would probably foster spider conservation in a wide range of situations. However, stronger effects can be expected from larger and/or older fallow areas.  相似文献

A one-dimensional mathematical model of the Yenisei river ecosystem including hydrological, ecosystem and radioecological blocks has been developed. The model was used to evaluate contribution of different processes (transfer by water masses, dilution, radioactive decay, bioaccumulation) into self-purification of the river water from a radiation pollution and calculate pollution density of ecosystem components (bacteria, phyto-, zooplankton, phyto-, zoobenthos, detritus) with 137Cs and 32P.  相似文献

Differences in behaviour reactions in "open field" and glycemia under conditions of immobilisation stress of vole (Microtus oeconomus, Pallas) from two groups ("Yanov" and "Lelev") were investigated. Rodents were ensnared from two populations reproduced for a long time (11 years) in the areas of ChNPP Exclusion Zone with different level of radioactive contamination. The radiation absorbed dose for animals of "Yanov" group (external and internal irradiation) was 11-20 times higher than that of "Lelev" group. Males and females from the area with worse radioecological condition had higher vertical and horizontal locomotion. The level of emotional reactions of "Yanov" males was lower than the "Lelev" one. Statistically significant variation in female emotional reaction was found, but it had not the same directions. In both groups higher locomotion activity and lower emotionality were associated with male sex. The males of both groups showed similar fasting glucose level and glycemic response after 30-min. immobilisation. Our data provide the additional evidence of existence of long-time genetic effects in small rodent populations permanently reproduced on radiation contaminated areas.  相似文献

In the World urbanization is a serious problem especially in developing countries which creates serious environmental problems like climatic and ecological changes in the ecosystem. The present paper aims to explain urbanization that causes loss of agriculture lands, biodiversity, soil erosions and grazing in District Dir. Urbanization decreased species richness such as Salix alba and Populus alba in the last few years in the local area. Soil of local area was divided into three different zones and was tested for soil texture and mineral percentage. Zone I soil showed sandy loamy texture with a pH of 8.3, Nitrogen 0.012%, Phosphorus 5.0% and organic matter was 0.74 (ppm). Zone II soil was loamy sand in texture with pH 8.1, Nitrogen 0.011%, Phosphorus 6.2%, and organic matter was 0.24 (ppm) while Zone III soil texture was silty clay loam with a pH of 8.1, Nitrogen 0.032%, Phosphorus 11.3%, and organic matter was 0.60 (ppm). The current work concludes that urbanizations affect natural biodiversity and agriculture lands, and that soil erosion and watering-points trampled by livestock is one of the significant problems in district Dir, and that the main degrading factor is the overexploitation of vegetation for fuel-wood and livestock grazing.  相似文献

Fallow lands in ancient agricultural areas of Northwestern Crimea which had experienced repeated phases of agricultural activity at different time periods (the Late Bronze Age, antiquity, and the last 150?200 years) have been studied. Differences in biogeochemical fluxes for virgin and fallow soils are analyzed from the chemical elements determining the composition of secondary clay minerals. The most informative and evolutionarily significant biogeochemical indicators of relict agricultural loads and duration of fallow periods are specified.  相似文献

The findings from long-term field studies on biological effects in plant populations inhabiting radioactively contaminated territories contrast in levels and compositions of dose-forming radionuclides are presented. Plant populations developing under radioactive impact show enhanced frequencies of gene and chromosome mutations, and their reproductive potential is inferior to reference populations. Even relatively low levels of technogenic impact are able to increase genetic diversity and destroy regularities inherent for intact populations. Chronic radiation exposure from a certain level appears to be an ecological factor changing genetic structure of wild populations. Data presented indicate the presence of adaptation processes in plant populations in territories with technogenic impact. Under ecological stress, there are selection processes for resistance improvement in plant populations. But an appearance and rate of this process can essentially differ in dependence on radioecological conditions.  相似文献
