Tympanosporium parasiticum forms annellated conidiogenous cells with short cylindric (tympaniform) conidia in white sporodochia on Tubercularia vulgaris Tode ex Fr. On agar media the conidia form short necks and blow out narrow secondary conidia in a phialidic manner producing very restricted yeast-like colonies. Only in the vicinity of the host hyphae (without tropic growth or hyphal connections) mycelia develop which form phialidic or annellate conidiogenous cells with narrowly cylindrical conidia in the agar, and sporodochia with short truncate conidia like those on the natural substrate in the aerial mycelium. No other host fungus was found to support this kind of growth. The mode of parasitism is compared with that of other hyperparasitic fungi. For Tympanosporium parasiticum the name Oospora candidula Sacc. was incorrectly used by Grove (1885) and the name Oospora filamentosa was proposed by Arnaud but never published.

Hirsutella uncinata, collected on follicles of Hakea sp. in New South Wales, Australia, is described as a new anamorph species. The fungus produces stiff, erect, verticillate conidiophores with up to 10 whorls of hooked, phialidic conidiogenous cells that have rough-walled necks. The conidia are subfusiform, flattened on one side and produced in groups of 2-3 in a dense slimy ball at the end of each phialide. Parsimony analysis of aligned internal transcribed spacer rDNA sequences suggests that H. uncinata is closely related to the Cordyceps sinensis complex (Clavicipitaceae, Hypocreales), which includes species with morphologically similar anamorphs.

Oligotrophic fungi can grow on carbon-free media. Most of the currently known oligotrophic fungi were reported from soil. Plectosphaerella oligotrophica sp. nov. was recently isolated from soil in China using a low carbon medium. The new species is morphologically characterized by pale yellow colonies on PDA, phialidic conidiogenous cells, and hyaline, ellipsoidal and 0–1-septate conidia. Phylogenetic analysis based on internal transcribed spacer (ITS) and large subunit (LSU) rDNA sequences confirmed the placement of P. oligotrophica as a new species in the genus Plectosphaerella. The new species is compared to the morphologically and phylogenetically closely related species. Beta-tubulin fragments from the new species were also sequenced and deposited in GenBank. A key to the currently accepted species of the genus is provided.

A new species of Hirsutella was isolated from unidentified mites on Petri plates inoculated with soil and root fragments collected from asparagus rhizosphere at Virú, Northern Peru. The fungus differs from other Hirsutella species by an envelope surrounding the conidium, conidia dimension and DNA sequences. In PDA cultures, the mycelium produced aerial hyphae with conidiogenous cells mainly at right angles, occasionally showing a secondary conidiophore. The solitary conidia are cymbiform, slightly apiculate, 5.0–6.0 × 3.0–4.0 μm. Phylogenetic analyses with partial rRNA and β-tubulin gene sequences confirmed the fungus as an Hirsutella (Ophiocordycipitaceae). Closest species shown by maximum likelihood and neighbor-joining trees were H. nodulosa and H. aphidis, from which the new species differs for conidium or conidiogenous cells dimensions, lack of synnemata and host type. A recombination event was also detected in the rRNA of the holotype strain, involving Ophiocordyceps sinensis as major parent and O. cochlidiicola as minor parent. A complement, inverted insertion was also found in its rRNA, involving part of the ITS2 and 5.8S regions, flanked by two short nucleotide arrays. Due to conidia dimension and phylogenetic position, the fungus is described as Hirsutella tunicata sp. nov. A review of mononematous Hirsutella species is provided.

The anamorphic fungus Synchaetomella lunatospora gen. et sp. nov. is described from a culture isolated from leaf litter in Singapore. The genus is characterized by the production of synnematous conidiomata with brown stipes, phialidic conidiogenesis with terminal and acropleurogenous conidiogenous cells, and falcate, 1-septate conidia, aggregating in white, mucilaginous heads. Its phylogenetic relationships, inferred from the partial nuclear small ribosomal subunit (18S) sequence, are with the coelomycetous genera Sphaerographium, Chaetomella, and Hainesia. However, the order and family affinities of this group are unclear.

The genus Fusariella, typified by F. atrovirens, is characterised by semi- to macronematous, mononematous conidiophores, with cylindrical, subulate or lageniform phialidic conidiogenous cells that produce catenate, septate, curved to straight, subhyaline to brown conidia. During a survey of hyaline-spored hyphomycetes from karst areas in Thailand, we collected a new species of Fusariella with curved conidia and introduce it in this paper as Fusariella curvata sp. nov. In addition, all hitherto described species of Fusariella are reviewed. The result of phylogenetic analyses, based on combined SSU, LSU, TEF and RPB2 sequence data, indicates that the genus belongs in the family Bionectriaceae (Hypocreales, Sordariomycetes).

Two new epiphytes of anamorphic ascomycetes, Phaeomoniella zymoides sp. nov. and Phaeomoniella pinifoliorum sp. nov., were isolated from the needle surface of Pinus densiflora in Korea. The new taxa were characterized by acid-tolerant, slow, partially yeast-like growth and extensive production of emerging cells on convex wrinkled mycelial colonies. Phaeomoniella zymoides produced mycelium with large numbers of intercalary and lateral or terminal vesicles or swollen cells. Large conidiogenous cells had a swollen base and appeared to be phialidic, and many phialoconidia also were produced from lateral hyphal apertures. Maturing colonies of Ph. zymoides were made up of dark green to blackish areas and produced a Phoma-like synanamorph. Primary conidia became elongate mother cells giving rise to polar or lateral secondary conidia. Phaeomoniella pinifoliorum was characterized by reduced, swollen, phialide-like cells, lateral production of conidia from hyphae and terminal or subterminal, or less commonly lateral, secondary production of conidia from yeast-like primary conidia. When ITS and 28S rDNA sequences were compared and analyzed with those of best matching GenBank taxa, the Phaeomoniella group consisted of three lineages, "zymoides", "pinifoliorum" and "chlamydospora" clades, which again showed a complete sister relationship to Moristroma quercinum ined.

Esteya vermicola, as the first recorded endoparasitic fungus of pinewood nematodes, exhibits great potential as a biological agent against nematodes. However, only two strains of this species have been described so far. In this study, we identified a novel endoparasitic fungal strain, CNU 120806, isolated from infected nematodes in forest soil samples during a survey of nematophagous fungi in Korea. This strain showed similar morphological characteristics and infection mode with the two previously described strains of E. vermicola. All strains are characterized by the ability to produce two types of conidiogenous cells and conidia, and to parasitize nematodes with lunate adhesive conidia. Moreover, the CNU 120806 strain showed 100% identity with E. vermicola CBS 115803 when their partial sequences of 28S rRNA gene were compared. Molecular phylogenetic analysis further identified CNU 120806 as a strain of E. vermicola, by clustering CNU 120806 and E. vermicola CBS 115803 into a single subclade. Culture medium influenced the proportion of dimorphic CNU 120806 conidia, and further changed the adhesive and mortality rates of nematodes. The CNU 120806 strain exhibits high infection activity against nematodes on nutrient-rich PDA medium. Almost all tested nematodes were killed within 8 approximately 10 days after inoculation. This study provides justification for further research of E. vermicola, and the application and formulation of this fungus as a bio-control agent against nematodes.

Minteriella cenotigena gen. & sp. nov., found on decaying bark submerged in a sinkhole from the southern of Mexico, is described and illustrated. The new taxa is distinguished by synnematous conidiomata, with polyblastic, discrete, indeterminate, sympodially proliferating conidiogenous cells, with flat conidiogenous loci and cylindrical, 3- to 4- (to 5) euseptate, hyaline conidia.

Conidiogenesis in Torula herbarum and T. herbarum f. quaternella was observed by scanning and transmission electron microscopy. Conidia of the former were shown to be made up of three equally sized cells capped by a distinctive, and easily recognizable, conidiogenous cell. Conidiogenous cells also arose terminally on erect hyphae and on prostrate hyphae. The single-layered conidial cell walls were differentiated into an inner hyaline zone and an outer electron-dense zone formed by the deposition of melanin. Conidiogenous cells lacked melanin at the apex and, before conidiation, the lateral walls were strengthened by a further deposition of melanin. The apex bulged outwards and was modified into a new multicelled conidium bearing another apical conidiogenous cell. Continued development of new conidia resulted in an acropetal chain which became disarticulated after cytolysis within the conidiogenous cell. The relative distinctions between holoblastic and enteroblastic development are discussed and it is concluded that the conidia should be referred to as blastoconidia.

Three Cylindrosporella species on the leaves of betulaceous trees – C. carpini, C. coryli, and C. microsperma – were first reported from Japan. The genus Cylindrosporella is sometimes treated as congeneric with Asteroma; however, we considered these to differ based on conidial morphology following the concept of Arx. The genus Cylindrosporella is characterized by one-celled, filiform or fusiform, small conidia that are often curved, have hyaline, thin walls, and are produced from phialidic conidiogenous cells in subcuticular, fiat acervuli. The three species are distinguished from each other on the basis of conidium size.

Bupleurum gibraltarium is an evergreen shrub endemic to southern Spain and northern Algeria and Morocco. We have collected and cultured an undescribed Kabatiella species that is consistently associated with the flower rachises and leaves of B. gibraltarium in the province of Granada. The fungus forms melanized acervuli on overwintered flower rachises. It also can be isolated from yeast-like conidial masses that emerge from senescing leaves and from surface-disinfected healthy leaves. Like other Kabatiella species, the fungus forms blastic falcate to lunate conidia simultaneously from the apex of conidiogenous cells in acervuli. In culture, melanized single-septate conidia form blastically from the vegetative hyphae that accumulate in yeast-like masses. These conidia germinate by budding to form secondary yeast-like cells or directly as hyphae. In culture, the fungus behaves like, and could be confused with, Aureobasidium and Hormonema species. We describe the growth of this species in agar media and its phylogenetic position based on the analyses of nuclear ribosomal RNA gene sequences. This new species is a sister species of the morphologically similar clover pathogen, K. caulivora.

The new hyphomycete genusAvesicladiella with two species,A. britannica sp. nov., type species, andA. microsperma sp. nov., is described and illustrated. Both species are leaf litter microfungi. The genus closely resemblesVesicladiella, Circinotrichum, Gyrothrix, Ceratocladium andVermiculariopsiella, several hyphomycete genera with comparable characters such as superficial hyphal networks; production of setae; absence of conidiophores; lageniform or ampulliform conidiogenous cells; and hyaline aseptate conidia produced in clusters around the apices of conidiogenous cells. The new genus differs from these by its hyaline, septate setae, typical ‘phialidic’ conidiogenous cells, and hyaline, aseptate cylindrical conidia.

Aspergillosis is a common disease of the silkworm Bombyx mori Linn., caused by an insect mycopathogen Aspergillus flavus Link:Fries. The present study reveals the germination, penetration and conidial development of A. flavus on the larval integument of B. mori under SEM. Four different strains (NB18, KA, NB4D2 and NB7) of B. mori was surface inoculated with ca. of 1 x 10(6) conidia/ml. Each conidium germinated on the cuticle approximately 6 h after inoculation, forming a humpy or suctorial appressoria within 24 h. The hyphae which entered into haemocoel 2 day post-inoculation, grew and multiplied extensively, forming a mycelial complex, causing death of the host larva in about 4-5 days. This occurred with minimal breakdown of the internal tissues. Death of the host was followed by ramification of the fungus through the mesodermal and epidermal tissues, leading to larval mummification about 5-6 days after inoculation. Extensive fungal growths on the entire larval body followed, consisting of aerial hyphae, which developed branched conidiophores. The aerial hyphae with abundant conidiophores formed a confluent yellowish green fungal mat over the entire larval body in 6-7 days of post-inoculation. The tip of each emerging conidiophores gradually dilated and developed to become a bulbous head known as the vesicle. A large number of conidiogenous cells were produced over the entire surface of vesicle, which later developed into finger-like projections termed as sterigmata or phialides. The phialides matured within 2 days after the aerial hyphae emerged as evidenced by chains of conidia at their tips. The conidia were globose with externally roughened walls. The life cycle of the fungus on B. mori was completed in six to seven days.

Ophiocordyceps unituberculata, a new insect pathogenic fungus from southwestern China, is described using molecular phylogenetic and morphological data. This fungus differs from other Ophiocordyceps species by its enormously long monophialidic conidiogenous cells and a large periclinal protuberance often growing near the apex of conidiogenous cells, single conidia (lanceolate to fusiform) embedded in mucous sheath, and much larger conidial dimensions. Four-locus (nrSSU, nrLSU, tef-1α and rpb1) and ITS data phylogenetic analyses show that O. unituberculata belongs to the Hirsutella nodulosa clade within the genus Ophiocordyceps of Ophiocordycipitaceae and is a separate clade from other allied species. Molecular phylogeny and morphology both strongly support the distinctiveness of this taxon. The interspecific relationships in the H. nodulosa clade are discussed.

A fungal strain, FOM-8108, that was isolated from sea sand was found to produce gentisylquinone and chlorogentisylquinone, inhibitors of neutral sphingomyelinase. The fungus grew well under normal conditions, in the darkness, or on various agar media, but typical morphological characteristics were not observed to determine its taxonomy. Therefore, culture conditions were studied extensively, resulting in formation of a number of pycnidia by the fungus on the media containing seawater or on natural substrates such as hydrangea leaves, gardenia leaves, and rice straw under natural light or near-ultraviolet radiation exposure. Eventually, from the morphological characteristics of pycnidia, conidiogenous cells, and conidia, strain FOM-8108 was considered to belong to the genus Phoma. Culture studies showed seawater in the fermentation medium was necessary for the strain to produce gentisylquinones. Particularly, a full production of chlorogentisylquinone, which has a chloride ion in the structure, was performed in the medium with higher concentration (75%–100%) of seawater. The genus Fenestroconidia is described to accommodate the new species Fenestroconidia caloplacae. This lichenicolous fungus produces black sporodochia, has conidiogenous cells arranged in chains, and simple, pale brown conidia with a subhyaline guttule-like zone. It is known only from central Spain (Cuenca province), growing in the apothecia of Caloplaca saxicola s.lat.
